Patients getting stuck at transitional accommodation for an average of six months, report finds

A review into transitional accommodation for people with disabilities who have been discharged from hospital has found some people are getting stuck at facilities almost permanently, amid reports from patients that they are receiving substandard care.

The State Government ordered a review of the Transition to Home facilities after multiple complaints, including the case of a man known as “Mr D” who was found by ambulance staff in squalid conditions with an infected wound.

Mr D was at a Hampstead facility that has since closed, but the remaining Transition to Home programs at The Repat and St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospital have also come under fire for a lack of care, with allegations clients have been left to soil themselves in their wheelchairs .

Last week, the ABC revealed multiple complaints from patients at the Repat Health Precinct, including allegations that patients were being left in their own faeces and had been given the incorrect doses of medication.

Originally designed to help NDIS clients stuck in hospital waiting for support to return home or to permanent accommodation, the independent report has found clients were being referred to the service without a discharge pathway, “resulting in clients being admitted whose length of stay in T2H will most likely to be static, long stay or permanent.”

It found while the expected length of stay in a T2H facility was 90 days, the average length of stay was 207 days. As of June this year the longest stay was 536 days.

Staff and clients told the reviewers that in some cases clients were waiting on simple home modifications, but NDIS requirements to get three quotes, combined with the post COVID-19 market was leading to delays.

Major facility misunderstanding

The report found the centers were designed to operate as step-down facilities, but there were frequent misunderstandings with clients who expect ongoing hospital-level care, a situation exacerbated by their location in a hospital setting.

While both facilities were supposed to be a home-like environment, the report found they had significant limitations including shared rooms with just curtains to separate clients, a lack of storage, limited access to outdoor areas and a lack of amenities like kitchen and laundry facilities. .

The so-called “Robust Unit” at The Repat was singled out.

“The new Robust Units … are stark and confronting, and the current bright white color and fit out are unlikely to contribute to calming a person with challenging behaviour,” the report found.

It found St Margaret’s “arrangements are of a much higher standard, although a number of shared rooms impact client privacy and dignity”.

The facilities have already been subject to multiple investigations, including internal audits and an inquiry by the Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner.

South Australia’s Crows chairman and chief executive apologize to Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins amid training camp fallout

Adelaide Crows’ chairman and chief executive have apologized to former players Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins over their experience at the controversial 2018 pre-season training camp.

Adelaide Football Club chairman John Olsen and chief executive Tim Silvers have penned an open letter to club members and fans after Betts’ released a book last week revealing how confidential information was used to verbally abuse him during the camp.

Former Crows Josh Jenkins and Bryce Gibbs also expressed their disappointment at the camp and how players were sworn to secrecy about what had occurred.

“We apologize to Eddie, Josh and any other player, coach or staff member, who had a negative experience during this time,” Olsen and Silvers wrote.

“It has been confronting to hear Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins describe their experiences during the 2018 pre-season training camp on the Gold Coast, as well as the subsequent hurt they have carried.

“Equally we are sorry to hear Bryce Gibbs express his disappointment at the way in which the camp and events surrounding it were handled and its impact on the playing group, and we acknowledge there are others who may feel the same way.

“The most important thing we can do now is listen and offer our support.”

Olsen and Silvers said “moving on” as a club would be “difficult”.

“Everyone will do it in their own time and in their own way, and we sincerely hope that, with the passage of time, the healing process can take place,” they wrote.

“We are committed to emerging from this painful and challenging period and getting better.

“While we cannot rewrite history, we remain determined to learn from the past.”

The pair stressed that the club culture had shifted in the past few years, with changes to several leadership positions.

Then-coach Don Pyke, head of football Brett Burton, chairman Rob Chapman and chief executive Andrew Fagan have since left their roles.

The camp was held after Adelaide’s defeat to Richmond in the 2017 Grand Final.

Silvers and AFL boss Gillon McLachlan have apologized to Betts for the hurt caused by the camp amid a potential class action.

Betts’ biography further detailed misappropriate use of Aboriginal rituals while Jenkins claimed details about his upbringing were used against him during the camp, despite him explicitly requested it not be shared.

The AFL and SafeWork SA completed separated investigations and found no breaches to work safety laws.

However, the AFL Players’ Association is contacting all players from the 2018 camp to gain better understanding of the issues that were raised.

The Block: Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull slammed by Sarah Jane

After months of controversy, Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull have finally made their reality TV debut on the new season of The Block.

The influencer and her former AFL star partner — who famously quit the Gisborne set of the reality series after just two days — initially appeared ready to take on the challenge during the show’s first episode on Sunday night.

But while the couple were set on convincing block viewers they were there to play, one fellow contestant was instantly suspicious of the pair, and she didn’t mince words.

Revealing she recognized beauty entrepreneur Ferguson “straight away,” team one’s Sarah-Jane fumed to producers: “She’s already famous, she’s got 600,000 followers on Instagram, she’s got sh*tloads of money, why are they here?”

The Victorian mother-of-one, who is competing with her husband Tom, had a lot to say about influencers in a pre-show interview.

“Social influencers… Some I respect obviously,” she began.

“Some make a huge career out of it! Look at your Kim Kardashians and your Rozalia Russians and people like that … Bec Judd! Good on them. But people who just go on shows to (boost their) social media, I don’t have time for that sh*t. Like, don’t waste my time.”

Sarah-Jane wasn’t the only person to make their judgment on the pair known, with host Scott Cam throwing out veiled digs in voiceovers throughout the episode.

In one, I described Ferguson as a “self-confessed global influencer and beauty entrepreneur”, referring elsewhere to the genetically-blessed pair as “Bondi babes”.

It comes after Cam suggested in several interviews that the duo left The Block 48 hours after arriving because they weren’t up to the challenge, not because of Patfull’s mother’s ill-health as was previously reported.

am has been busy sledging the pair for throwing in the towel, calling it “p*ss poor” and “unAustralian”, amid reports the duo flew to Adelaide to car for Patfull’s mother after a nasty fall.

Speaking to news.com.au in the lead up to the Tree Change season premiere on Sunday, Cam revealed the couple upped sticks in the middle of the night with “no explanation”.

“They didn’t give us a reason why they were leaving. They never mentioned anything to us about visiting their sick mother,” Scott said.

During episode one, Ferguson showed some signs of finding the competition difficult, though no more than the other teams.

“I’m not gonna lie… it was a little intimidating,” she said on walking into the building site of House Three.

“It was a demolition site, and when I say demolition site, you couldn’t see the ground.”

After night one, the influencer told producers: “I did think someone was going to come and maybe sey here’s a heater… but no… it was fresh.”

Promos for the next episode see Cam expressing his shock at the couple’s abrupt exit.

Swans back into top four with big win over North

The Sydney Swans have enhanced their AFL top-four prospects with a comfortable 38-point victory over lowly North Melbourne at Docklands Stadium.

The Swans predictably dominated Sunday’s contest but North, led by a career-high eight-goal haul from Nick Larkey, kicked accurately to prevent the visitors from streaking ahead in the first-half.

Sydney put their foot down in the third quarter, however, kicking six goals to three before cruising to their fifth-straight victory, 18.18 (126) to 13.10 (88).

The result leaves the Swans (14-6) fourth on the ladder, just below reigning premiers Melbourne on percentage, leading into their last home-and-away games against Collingwood and St Kilda.

Sydney were too powerful across every area of the ground, with young guns Chad Warner, Errol Gulden and Nick Blakey leading the charge.

But veterans like Tom Hickey, Sam Reid and dynamic forward-midfielder Tom Papley were also influential.

Superstar Lance Franklin, who on Saturday declared he was putting contract talks with the club on hold until the end of the season, ended with four goals after North defender Aidan Corr restricted the legendary goal-kicker early in the game.

North (2-18) suffered a pre-game blow when key defender Ben McKay (shoulder) was withdrawn and replaced by Josh Walker, who had been preparing to play in the Kangaroos’ VFL game at Arden St.

Larkey was clearly the Kangaroos’ best, while midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke put in another outstanding performance in his career-best season.

While all ran smoothly for the Swans at Docklands, former co-captain Josh Kennedy suffered a suspected hamstring injury in the VFL game after he was on the cusp of a return to the AFL side.

The Swans are back at the SCG next Sunday for a mammoth clash with the red-hot Magpies in a crucial battle to make-up the top-four, while the Kangaroos travel to play Adelaide on Saturday to face the Crows.

South Australians can soon buy their first home with low deposit on HomeStart loans

Owning a home could soon become a reality for more South Australians with a state-government backed lender lowering their minimum deposit requirements.

Eligible graduates will be able to apply for a home loan with HomeStart Finance with as little as 2 per cent deposit.

Successful applicants will not need to pay lender’s mortgage insurance — required by most lenders if home buyers do not have 20 per cent deposit — potentially shaving off thousands of dollars in upfront costs.

Dwelling prices in July have grown for Adelaide, Perth and Darwin while other Australian major cities dropped as interest rates surge.

Treasurer Stephen Mullighan said the loan could wipe months off savings plans of people trying to buy their first home.

“Rather than South Australians having to spend years and years trying to save 20 per cent deposit to get a loan with one of the big four banks, instead that time is now reduced perhaps to only months,” he said.

A man in a business suit speaking with another man in the background
SA Treasurer Stephen Mullighan says the loan scheme will open doors for more South Australians into the housing market.

Mr Mullighan said the deposit reduction for the HomeStart scheme would allow low-to-medium income earners an opportunity to compete at auctions.

He said the government was expecting the Adelaide housing market to stabilize as interest rates rise.

“Even though some of the heat is going to be coming out of the market, for the first time we’re going to be seeing South Australians armed properly so they can compete in the market,” he said.

He estimates more than 250,000 South Australians with a Certificate III or higher qualification will be eligible for the scheme.

The previous minimum deposit required for that loan is 3 per cent.

For a $400,000 home, loan applicants will only need to fork out $8,000 in deposit and for a $850,000 price tag, buyers will pay $17,000 instead of $25,500 in deposit.

Electrician Robert Thiel and hospitality worker Beth Mayfield, who are currently renting at Lockleys, say the change will help the couple get into the housing market sooner.

“Any amount you can save as a potential home owner is life-changing,” Ms Mayfield said.

“I never thought it would be possible for myself, to be honest, so it’s really exciting that it might be something really attainable for us.”

Ms Mayfield said her rent has increased in recent months, encouraging her to consider becoming a home owner.

The HomeStart graduate loan will be offered from Tuesday.

  • Chalmers considered leaving the sport over ‘love triangle’ claims at Games

Champion swimmer Kyle Chalmers was all smiles arriving home from a successful Commonwealth Games, looking to put the ‘love triangle’ drama that almost derailed his campaign in the rear-vision mirror.

Chalmers was met by his mother at Adelaide airport and appeared in good spirits.

He donned a black hoodie with a pair of Australian swim team tracksuit pants.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist beamed at waiting media as he wheeled his luggage through the airport alongside his mother.

Chalmers left Birmingham with three gold medals and one silver.

During the game he said he was considering quitting the sport after the drama surrounding the reported swimming ‘love triangle’ between himself, former girlfriend Emma McKeon and her new beau Cody Simpson.

The drama made headlines when the 4×100 mixed relay team won gold on the opening night but the celebrations appeared tinged by awkwardness as McKeon and Chalmers did not shake hands after securing victory.

Speaking at a press conference in Birmingham, Chalmers threatened to quit swimming altogether if ‘false news’ continued to circulate that he was in a feud with McKeon and Simpson.

After taking gold in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, Chalmers put his fingers to his lips in a gesture that suggested he was silencing his critics after taking gold.

He had also said there were moments he had felt like he ‘could not continue on’ and said he hoped his latest win was ‘a learning point for everybody’ – including the media.

Chalmers also rubbished reports of a rift in the team, saying after his last race at the Games he was ‘relieved’ it was now over.

‘There’s so many things to be grateful for: being part of the team, it’s special,’ he told Channel 7 after swimming the anchor leg for Australia in their 4x100m mixed medley.

‘And we are all so close and it’s been a very, very successful week in the pool for us and, hopefully, we’re able to celebrate a little bit tonight as a team and, obviously, we all depart tomorrow.’

Meet Australia’s oldest little penguin, who has fathered chicks across the country

Just shy of 21 years old, Gordon is the oldest Australian little penguin on record and is still maintaining an active love life despite his age.

Outliving the average life span of his species for more than 14 years, the senior penguin has also been busy safeguarding his species’ declining population.

Gordon’s bloodline runs strong, and he has successfully raised four adult daughters, who have gone on to breed in other colonies around Australia.

His minder at Adelaide Zoo, Amelia Kennett, said that it was no small feat for an animal that usually mates for life.

“He has had quite a number of different partners, which is a little bit unusual for little penguins,” Ms Kennett said.

“Especially because he does have a variety of partners it means he’s not over-represented genetically too much … so he’s done well in that part.”

Despite having arthritis and partial blindness, Gordon continues to amaze, hatching another chick just the other day.

His keepers are hopeful the new hatchling will pull through.

“He just powers on,” Ms Kennett said.

“As he’s getting older and older, we’re realizing how significant that is and I guess he’s quite a special one in the group.”

Gordon is one of 14 little penguins at Adelaide Zoo.

With only half of little penguins surviving past their first year and the continuous loss of habitat, small populations like this one help ensure the existence of the species.

“By having a breeding population in captivity, it means we’ve got a little bit of a backup just in case things go south out in the wild,” Ms Kennett said.

Zookeeper Amelia Kennett says Gordon has fathered many children.(ABC News: Che Chorley)

Parenting is a fifty-fifty job between little penguins, with the mother and father usually splitting feeding shifts between morning and night.

But with more parenting experience than any other, Gordon has learned to pick up the slack.

“For Gordon, if his mate is letting down the relationship a bit, he’ll definitely step up and sometimes he’ll do both feeds in a day,” she said.

Since arriving from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo two decades ago, Gordon has become a beloved character at Adelaide Zoo.

“They all have their unique personalities and attributes but Gordon is certainly one that stands out,” Gordon’s keeper chuckled.

“He’s very routine based … which I guess comes with his age.”

Gordon’s nest is fittingly placed at the highest point of the enclosure, overlooking the pond and his penguin mates.

“We moved his nest box once and he was very determined that we never move it again,” Ms Kennett said.

With an eagerness like his, the only sign of Gordon’s age comes from his name, which was inspired by a brand of gin.

“We did have a number of birds named after alcohol, that has since been changed,” his minder said.

“We do have a theme with names every year and way back then that’s what that was.”

Gordon currently sees an eye doctor once a year and occasionally takes pain medication but overall Ms Kennett said he was fit and healthy.

“He is more than comfortable at the moment but we keep a close eye on him,” she said.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Candice Warner drops brutal Kyle Chalmers truth

The swimming is officially over at the Commonwealth Games and while Australia dominated with a towering medal tally, there was plenty of attention on the Dolphins over what was happening outside the pool.

Kyle Chalmers slammed the media for delving into a reported “love triangle” between himself, Emma McKeon and Cody Simpson, saying all the attention and “clickbait” focused on his personal life might drive him out of the sport.

Stream Over 50 Sports Live & On-Demand with Kayo. New to Kayo? Try 14-Days Free Now >

Chalmers was romantically involved with McKeon before she started dating Simpson, whose incredible comeback to swimming from his music career has been one of the biggest storylines in Birmingham.

The swimmers involved have repeatedly denied there’s any bad blood between them, while Chalmers went on the offensive and ripped into the media. His father Brett did the same, blasting the national obsession with Simpson as he complained not enough credit was being directed to other swimmers and their achievements in Birmingham.

Candice drops truth bombs on Kyle

Ex-Aussie swimmer turned popular TV presenter Johanna Griggs said earlier in the week Chalmers was “feeding” the media frenzy by constantly engaging with it, and former Ironwoman Candice Warner is on the same page.

Warner said she was “really surprised” by how Chalmers handled the headlines, saying she expected someone who dealt with the attention thrust upon him in 2016 when he won gold in the 100m freestyle at the Rio Olympics to be better prepared for the media barrage.

“He knows how to deal with the pressure. Why is he allowing the media to make these comments?” Warner told Fox Sports program The Back Page this week.

“Why hasn’t he put a self-imposed media ban (on himself) until the Games are over? I’m just really a little bit confused by the situation and why he’s engaging with the media.

“He’s not in the wrong, but he also has the power and ability to stop it and also just to focus on his swim events.

“Should I know how to deal with this pressure? Should I know how to deal with this completely?”

Reports of possible friction between Chalmers and Simpson first emerged at this year’s national championships in Adelaide, leading Warner to question why the 24-year-old wasn’t more prepared for the questions he’d face in Birmingham.

“Would there not have been a strategy put into place before these Games? We haven’t just started talking about this now, we’ve been speaking about this love triangle before the Commonwealth Games,” Warner said.

She adding Chalmers’ team and Swimming Australia should have “put some sort of strategy into place knowing this could have been a possibility”.

Warner also said Chalmers — who she described as an “alpha male” — would understandably be affected by McKeon’s relationship with Simpson given their history, suggesting “his ego would be burnt a little bit”.

‘He likes the attention but not the scrutiny’

Chalmers has been irked by attention being lavished on Simpson and his personal life at the expense of other swimmers whose feats also deserve praise. Courier Mail chief sports writer Robert Craddock suggested Chalmers craves positive headlines about himself but can’t handle it when coverage isn’t so rosy.

“It appears to me as if he likes the attention but not the scrutiny — and there is just a fine line between them and they often overlap,” Craddock told The Back Page.

“I think he’s one of those guys who can’t live with it and can’t live without it and finds it very awkward.

“He’s on Instagram, he’s out there, he’s happy to put himself front and center but like a lot of swimmers, when it’s big time, when it’s Games time, the force of the coverage hits them hard.”

Australian swimming legend Susie O’Neill had a different take on how the situation has affected the national team in Birmingham.

O’Neill — who was in Tokyo for last year’s Olympics — was adamant there is no rift among the Dolphins and said it’s harder for athletes these days to block out negative publicity because of social media and the insatiable news cycle.

“I think what they’re struggling with is, if you think about swimmers, they spend 30-40 hours a week trying to improve one one-hundredth of a second — such specific, objective goals,” she told The Back Page.

“So when they get asked subjective questions not even to do with their sport, you know, reality TV stuff, they’re confused and I think get offended by that.”

Why Chalmers is kicking up a stink

Meanwhile, SEN boss Craig Hutchison believes Chalmers is struggling in adjusting to the added scrutiny because he’s been so used to positive coverage for the majority of his career.

“He has had a charmed run as a young man with the media. That rarely happens to the bulk of society and you get a disproportionate comfort that you are … a figure that gets a lot of adulation,” Hutchison said on his media podcast The Sounding Board.

“So when things go wrong, you’re not emotionally equipped to necessarily handle the negativity.

“Then it often sways the other way because you overreact, or react to a certain way.”

Journalist Damian Barrett told The Sounding Board: “What he (Chalmers) doesn’t get… you can’t control media. No matter who you are and what run you’ve got.”

D-Link R15 AX1500 Smart Router Review: A solid entry-level option

D-Link’s new Eagle Pro AI series of routers is looking to shake things on both sides of the market, from entry-level routers-to premium mesh systems. The R15 AX1500 Eagle Pro AI stands as the entry-level option, but provides some nifty value through its compact design, Wi-Fi 6 functionality and various smart features including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice control commands, that this side of the market have been missing as of late. It might not jump out at users in any particular way, but still serves as a worthy upgrade for those looking for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, or as a basic upgrade for those rather bare-bones routers provided by most internet and telco providers.

Design

Much like its sibling, the G415 4G Smart Router, the R15 is rather compact an unassuming, sporting a flat white paint job and four side antennas. Unlike the G415, the R15 does sit flat on its back rather than standing upright, meaning it might take up a little more room in some spaces. That being said, the R15 is one of the smallest routers I’ve ever used, so I can’t imagine both the size and orientation being too much of an issue for most users.

The back of the router also sports three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, and a single Gigabit Ethernet port for even faster transfer speeds, the latter of which is now becoming a standard for all levels and tiers of internet routers. Beyond this, there’s admittedly not much going on with the router, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Its smaller size allows it to be tucked away, while the only thing I can truly point out regarding the overall appearance and design of such a router, is that the flat white colourway may stand out, particularly if your internet setup is located in a central position in the home.

Performance

In terms of performance, the R15 plays things relatively straight. With the ability to hit speeds of up to 1,201Mbps on 5GHz band and 300Mbps on the traditional 2.4GHz, most Australian users will find the router capable of transmitting the fastest speeds our internet companies and telco providers have to offer. Unlike most entry-level routers and routers provided by the aforementioned internet and telco companies, the the R15 can cover a whopping 230 square meters, making it a no-brainer for both smaller and larger households alike, without the need to purchase any external or additional extenders.

That being said, the R15 does play friendly with the Eagle Pro AI range, meaning such extenders and even additional routers can easily be paired to the R15 via the Eagle Pro AI app. Much like the G415 4G Smart Router, the Eagle Pro AI Engine also keeps users tuned to the most reliable band at any given time, be it the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, allowing multiple uses to consistently access the most efficient and reliable method of connectivity .

Software

Thankfully, the Eagle Pro AI app is incredibly friendly and easy to use. As we’ve covered most of the apps functionality and features in our D-Link G415 AX1500 4G Smart Router Review, we have included the relevant excerpt below, outlining a nearly identical experience in relation to the R15:

“It’s incredibly easy to navigate, and is responsible for additional features, including the aforementioned AI Mesh Optimiser and the handy AI Parental Control. As the name suggests, AI Parental Control allows users to monitor and manage their children’s online activities. From here, you can create a profile for individual users to block and minimize access to the internet. Aside from the rampant virus exposure that may be a cause for concern for some parents, certain sites can even be curbed thanks to a web filter.”

“The Eagle Pro AI App also allows for voice control through multiple platforms including the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. This might feel unnecessary for some, but is a welcome inclusion for those looking to turn their home into a smart, interconnected haven. The included AI Assistant can also whip up weekly reports for you incusing user activity and general internet traffic, with recommendations on how to solve the issues that may arise as a result. Overall, the app is incredibly easy to navigate and continuously informative at every step.”

Verdict & Value

Overall, the D-Link R15 AX1500 Smart Router is a reliable router for the entry-level price tag. Thanks to the Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, Eagle Pro AI app and compact design, it’s admittedly hard to pass this one up, should you be upgrading from a basic router provided by your internet provider, or imply looking to the future for Wi-Fi 6 support, which is arguably provided here at one of the cheapest price points in the market today. Impressive range will negate the need for extenders in most homes, while such a solution is incredibly easy to set up given the seamless functionality of the Eagle Pro AI app. If you’re looking for a solid all-rounder for an entry-level price tag, you might not need to look any further.
