ALDI supermarket’s small trolleys arrive in Australian stores: first photo sends customers wild

The first photo of ALDI supermarket’s new small trolleys have been shared on social media, prompting an excited reaction from shoppers.

In June, the retail giant confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au that it will introduce smaller trolleys to customers in an effort to provide “greater convenience”.

In the past, ALDI has only offered large 212-litre carts – which are 1.1m high – for shoppers to use, attracting criticism.

Some claimed that the “enormous” trolleys were unsuitable for elderly, pregnant and “short” people, saying they are “made for giants”.

In response, an ALDI Australia spokesperson revealed that the half-sized trolleys – which are popular at Coles and Woolworths – would be available in stores.

“We recognize that customers are looking for greater convenience when they visit our stores, as it’s almost impossible not to pick up the excellent value products on offer,” the spokesperson said.

“That’s why we’re introducing smaller trolleys across all our locations, so our customers can more efficiently pick up products while doing smaller grocery shops.”

The first photo of the new trolleys appeared on the Aldi Mums Facebook page, sending fans wild.

“Yes I just used one. I was surprised to see them. A great addition,” said one.

Added another: “OMG yes! So hard when you’re a short person to lag around their big trolley!”

A third wrote: “Fantastic, no more tiptoes trying to get the bottom items out of trolley.”

One more said: “About time! For me, 144cm of shortness the trolleys are so big, almost climbing in every time! Well done ALDI for the newer half cart smaller trolleys.”

Another responded: “Thank goodness, I hurt my stomach every time I try to get goods from the bottom of the larger trolleys. I hope mine gets them very, very, very soon.”

The new trolleys come just months after ALDI confirmed that it was introducing hand baskets to all stores.

American holidaymaker Theodora McCormick and husband fall victim to notorious Greek restaurant with huge bill

Yet another tourist couple have been left horrified at the bill charged by a notorious restaurant on the Greek island of Mykonos.

American holidaymakers Theodora McCormick and her husband were taking in the sights of the stunning island when they dropped into the DK Oyster bar.

They ordered two beers, two cocktails and a dozen oysters — and were slapped with a $730 bill.

Then when they complained, Ms McCormick claims that “hulking” male waiters intimidated them into paying.

She said that they only dropped into the restaurant to call a taxi and ordered to be polite.

“I told my husband, ‘Oh, why don’t we call a taxi and grab a drink’,” she said. “That was my big mistake.”

Ms McCormick said that when she asked for a cocktail menu, the waiter instead rattled off a list of options.

They ordered two martinis and two beers — and were amazed at the size of the drinks.

Mum shares the exact time she went into Coles to nab marked-down meat, dairy and bakery items

An Australian mum has shared her incredible bargain grocery haul and revealed the exact time she went to the supermarket to nab the deals.

The woman, from Wodonga, Victoria, managed to score $215.11 worth of goods for just $10.92 when she visited Coles at 8pm.

She bought 26 heavily-discounted items with a range of meats including kangaroo kebabs for just 47 cents, chicken breasts for $1.08 down from $20, bacon for 28 cents a pack and and eight-pack of beef chevaps for 32 cents.

A thrifty mum has shared how she bought $215 worth of groceries for just $10 by going to the supermarket at around 8pm

Also included in the stash was three liters of milk down to 32 cents, a nine-pack of vanilla cupcakes for 27 cents, ready-made spaghetti meals for just 32 cents each as well as lamington donuts, coleslaw mix, veggie mince, yoghurt, and cream.

The bargain hunter said she was ‘absolutely stoked’ with her impressive haul in a post to a popular Facebook group, Markdown Addicts Australia.

‘Our freezer is now full which is a relief with rising prices,’ she said in the comments.

The post received more than 1,700 ‘likes’ and prompted a flurry of responses from fellow members wanting to know the mum’s budget shopping secrets.

What’s the best time to shop for discounts at a supermarket?

in the morning – shoppers can save between 10 and 20% off goods about to expire

before dinner – shoppers can save up to 50% off goods about to expire

Just before the store closes – shoppers can save up to 90% off goods about to expire

* Markdowns are determined based on store policies and times and may vary

‘Score! Especially in the recent food cost hike. Jealous but stoked for you,’ one woman commented.

‘Price hikes have been insane!’ the poster replied.

‘So jealous I never score great bargains,’ a second wrote to which the shopper said she ‘happened to show up’ as an employee was starting to mark down the items.

‘We went down the aisles then would go back and pick up the bargains as he left,’ she said adding she gave the worker space making sure not to crowd him.

‘So you find these on one section OR do you go around the whole shop finding them?’ another asked.

‘Multiple sections – most meat was in a pile in the meat section, dairy usually put next the milk, cakes & bread together etc,’ the mum answered.

The next evening, the bargain hunter returned to Coles at the same time and picked up $75.60 worth of items that had been discounted to just $3.95

Just a day later, the Wodonga mum picked up another markdown haul when she returned to the same Coles at the same time.

She spent just $3.95 on $75.60 worth of items including plant-based patties, bread, cupcakes, zucchini noodles, loaves of bread and bagels.

‘After last night I wanted to see if I could back it up! Seems our store has decided 8pm is the time to start marking down!’ she wrote in another post.

‘Had to leave after meat but they seem to do bakery then meat, then the dairy fridges and around in a circle.’

Dozens of shoppers have been sharing their tips and tricks for nabbing bargains at the supermarkets amid the rising cost of living.

One woman came across a 500g pack of butter for just $1.88 marked down from $7.50 at her local Central Coast store and purchased the lot.

The woman, who is a keen baker and uses a lot of butter, attracted more than 1,100 ‘likes’ on her post and sparked a lively debate with dozens of comments.

The post was flooded with comments from disgruntled shoppers who say they ‘would have left some’ for others.

‘I would have left some, as there are many people struggling, good find,’ one person quipped.

‘During these hard times and so many people doing it tough I would have left some for someone else. But that’s just me,’ another said.

‘I left ALL the meat. Shelves and shelves of it. I bake ALOT so the butter is great for me,’ the home baker responded.

However, not everyone was unhappy about the Lake Haven woman’s butter haul with many jumping to her defense and complimenting her ‘great score’

‘I would have taken them all, I love a bargain and this is something that gets used daily in my house so you bet if I saw them I’d take em all too!,’ one mum said.

Another Coles customer from Coomera in Queensland bought $170 of chicken as well as a some dairy and deli items for just $25 when she nipped into the store at 7pm on the way home from work for what was supposed to be a ‘quick stop’.

‘One happy house wife. Worth $169.94. Paid $25.20. My fam will start to grow feathers, ‘she wrote in a post with a photo of her budget shop de ella.

She bought 21 packets of chicken and turkey including whole birds, wings, negs, legs and mince as well as an iced coffee, yoghurt and hummus at just a fraction of the price.

Why you shouldn’t wash raw chicken

Chicken: it’s super tasty and a great source of protein. But it can also play host to nasty bacteria, and all food handlers must be careful preparing it.

For starters, don’t wash raw chicken. The bacteria on its surface can spread in tiny droplets that splash around your kitchen – contaminating surfaces, equipment and other food.

Cooking chicken thoroughly kills the bacteria.

Also, when you’re preparing raw chicken remember to wash your hands before and after handling, and use separate chopping boards and utensils to avoid bacteria spreading to ready-to-eat food.

Playing it safe with food only takes a few seconds.

It’s always worth it.

Her post drew in hundreds of comments and prompted a debate among shoppers who cautioned against keeping meat close to its use-by date for too long even when it’s been frozen.

‘Great pick up especially with the cost of meat! But my anxiety would never let me eat it – discounted meat especially chicken is a no go,’ one mum warned.

‘Looks like they’ve been reduced twice, you might want to give it a quick sniff,’ another recommended while a third wrote: ‘I use the rule if it smells and is slimy THROW IT OUT. This applies to stuff in date by days or a day or 2 left and purchased on clearance.’.

‘If you want to eat something that could make you very sick and call it a bargain well I suppose as long as your happy, I truly hope you don’t get serious food poisoning,’ a fifth quipped.

‘Do some of y’all really think when the clock strikes midnight chicken is instantly riddled in salmonella? Like you know that’s not how bacteria works right…’ argued another.

Others suggested opening, repackaging and even rinsing the discounted meat before freezing to check whether it’s safe to eat.

‘Clearance meat (not just chicken) is always opened, sniff, slimy test done, repackaged and frozen,’ one shopper said.

‘I remove from original packaging wash the juice, then portion them in freezer bags and freeze. Once I have got poisoned from was already marinated and cooked without washing,’ a second explained.

Food safety experts however have said not to wash raw chicken as it can spread harmful bacteria around the kitchen.

According to the Queensland government initiative Healthier, washing chicken is not recommended as droplets of bacteria can splash around the kitchen and contaminate surfaces, equipment and other food causing illnesses like Salmonella.

Many of Coles chicken packages advised customers to store at or below 5C and if freezing, do so on the day of purchase and use within a month.

‘Allow to fully thaw in the refrigerator prior to cooking and keep refrigerated until use. Use within 1 days of thawing. Once thawed do not refreeze,’ the package reads.

Simple steps to freezing and thawing chicken meat safely

If you buy raw chicken meat in bulk, it’s likely that you will need to freeze some of it for use later.

Each time you freeze and thaw chicken meat it loses moisture which can affect eating quality, but it is safe to do so, if you follow these tips.

When freezing raw chicken meat:

  • Do it as soon as you get it home (and definitely before the use by date)
  • Freeze it at a temperature below -20°C (most home freezers should be at this temperature)
  • Package into meal-sized portions so that you don’t need to refreeze unused portions again

When thawing frozen chicken meat:

  • Make sure it is thawed completely prior to cooking
  • Thaw in the fridge or the microwave – don’t thaw on the bench
  • If thawing in the fridge, put the meat in a container on the bottom shelf

Throw out meat that has been thawing for more than a day.

How long can you keep chicken frozen before use?

Check the instructions on the door or lid of your freezer for how long poultry, meat etc will last.

From a safety point of view you can store frozen meats for years; however with time there will be a loss in nutrient value and quality.

Woolworths supermarket launches urgent investigation after Woolworths shoppers in NSW and Queensland spot alarming iceberg lettuce detail

Woolworths customers in two states have reported concerning incidents with recent iceberg lettuce purchases, prompting the supermarket giant to launch an investigation.

Sharing on Facebook, two shoppers – from Queensland and NSW – revealed that they’d discovered brown spots in lettuce that were recently purchased from Woolies.

It’s understood the discolouring is associated with excessive humidity and wet weather conditions in growing regions.

For more Food related news and videos check out Food >>

While the disease – believed to be a bacterial soft rot – looks unsavory, 7NEWS.com.au understands that lettuce heads that have the discolouring are not a health risk and can be consumed.

With iceberg lettuce prices soaring to record highs in recent months, the customers have voiced their frustration at having taken home lettuce that were less than perfect.

Both shoppers reported that the icebergs appeared to be normal and in good condition when they were purchased.

A Queensland shopper shared these images of brown, slimy spots on an iceberg lettuce she recently purchased. Credit: Facebook

However it was only when they peeled back the outer leaves at home, that the brown spots and slime became visible.

“I treated us to a ‘fresh’ iceberg lettuce today from Woolworths for the first time in months,” said one Ipswich customer.

“Took off the outer leaves to put the ‘fresh’ inner leaves on our chicken burgers for dinner. Yeah, that didn’t happen considering I was met with a slimy, rotten mess. Yuck!

“The outer leaves looked normal … certainly not paying $6.50 for something I have to chuck straight to the chooks!”

Another Sydney customer shared a photo of her brown lettuce, saying: “I don’t mind paying what you guys ask but this is ridiculous.”

Experts say brown, slimy spots on a lettuce – which don’t appear on the outer leaves – can be a sign of bacterial soft rot in the lettuce.

Bacterial soft rot – or pectobacterium carotovorum – is typically caused by moist conditions and injury to the plant.

A Sydney shopper shared this image of the iceberg lettuce she purchased from her local Woolies. Credit: Facebook

The disease causes brown-coloured rot on infected areas and may go unnoticed until the leaves are removed.

Some Facebook users pointed out that recent flood conditions may have contributed to any problems with the lettuce.

“Did you stop and think that maybe, just maybe, they have been flood affected?” asked one. “It would be impossible to see what the inside looks like under the outer leaves.”

Woolworths responds

A Woolworths spokesperson has said that the supermarket is investigating the incidents.

“We take food quality seriously and are disappointed to receive similar reports from these customers,” the spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“We’ve passed this onto our suppliers and supply chain teams, who are assessing existing lettuce supply for any discolouring. This will continue to be monitored.

“We haven’t received any other reports on similar products at this time.”

Woolworths customers are encouraged to contact their local store for a replacement and refund if they are disappointed with the quality of one of the supermarket’s products

STARBURST brand to be discontinued in Australia after supply chain issues

One of the world’s largest confectionary manufacturers has been forced to respond after Australians suddenly struggled to find Starburst lollies on supermarket shelves.

One Sydney TikToker revealed she’d been searching for the lollies everywhere, in a video that has been watched 250,000 times.

“Can someone tell me where these lollies went?” she said, “I’ve been looking everywhere – Big W, Coles, whatever – these lollies don’t exist … did they just stop selling them and no one realized?”

For more Food related news and videos check out Food >>

More than 1000 people agreed, commenting that they, too, had struggled to source the range which includes Starburst Fruit Chews, Gummies, GummiBursts, lollipops and Jellybeans.

“I love those lollies but they stopped selling them like what, why?” one said. Another added: “I’ve been looking for them too.”

While a third person said: “Oh my god my childhood I miss them so much.”

A spokesperson for Mars Wrigley, which manufactures Starburst, told 7NEWS.com.au that the reason the popular treats were so hard to find in Australia – is because the brand had been discontinued.

“We regularly review our Mars Wrigley product range to ensure we’re offering our consumers great tasting products that are also great value for money,” the spokesperson said.

“Our STARBURST® products are imported from Europe and like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years.”

The company said that after “reviewing all options”, it had made the “difficult decision” to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022. Instead, it will focus on products manufactured locally.

“As a proud Australian manufacturer for more than 60 years, we are taking this opportunity to prioritize and invest in the brands and products we make locally in Australia such as M&Ms, Maltesers, Skittles, Snickers, Extra and Eclipse.”

Ballarat potato growers ask McCain Foods for 78 per cent price increase

Potato farmers in the Ballarat region are demanding a pay rise for their produce, claiming McCain Foods does not pay a fair price for the popular mealtime vegetable.

Last season McCain Foods paid growers an average of 33 cents per kilo of potatoes delivered to the local processing plant, a figure that farmers said was well below the rising cost of production.

A farmer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the local growers’ association had approached the processor on Monday asking for 59 cents per kilo, a 78 per cent price increase.

The requested price rise reflected the current cost of production and rising input costs, such as increased fertilizer and fuel prices, and also allowed the farmers to turn a profit.

The farmer said eleven factors such as weed and pest control, irrigation, harvest, labor and transport were considered it cost approximately 51 cents to produce a kilo of spuds leaving producers running at a loss.

In January, storms also damaged a large portion of this year’s crop, which meant some farmers lost more than a third of their yield and reduced the Ballarat region’s potato harvest by 20 per cent.

McCain Foods has previously been investigated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) over allegations of unconscionable conduct towards growers.

A McCain Foods spokesperson said the company engaged in constant dialogue with growers throughout the course of the year.

“We cannot provide details on our confidential pricing discussions with them,” the spokesperson said.

“We are proud of the continued investment we have demonstrated in recent years and will continue to support our customers, our people, our growers, and the hundreds of people within our communities who depend on us for their livelihoods.”

In Tasmania, farmers have recently rejected price offers made by food manufacturers Simplot for their potato crop this season.

Sydney Pork Rolls bakery lashed on Reddit over extra charge for cutting rolls in half

A Sydney bakery has been lashed online for charging customers a 20c surcharge just to cut their lunch in half.

A photo posted to Reddit revealed the Vietnamese bakery, Sydney Pork Rolls, has a list of surcharges for the addition of extra ingredients such as salad, chilli, meat, ham, egg, pate and mayo.

When purchasing a banh mi from the store in the inner Sydney suburb of Haymarket, the sign informs customers extra salad will set you back an extra 50c, while extra meat and egg is an extra $1.50.

However, the one surcharge that had customers smoking online is the extra charge for cutting the banh mi in half.

At the bottom of the surcharge list, the sign states a “request to cut your roll in half” will cost an extra 20 cents.

Users on Reddit were quick to express their disbelief at the extra charge.

“This is a joke!” one user commented. “This pricing is getting outrageous, all in the name of inflation,” another said.

“They should ask ‘would you like to cut it in half?’ like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if ‘you want fries with that?’,” another declared.

However, some Reddit users defended the shop, saying the outlet was well within its rights to charge extra for the service.

“Getting it cut in half means the two halves are wrapped and packaged separately. It’s completely reasonable to charge extra,” one user commented.

7NEWS.com.au has reached out to Sydney Pork Rolls for further comment.
