Australian woman saves $30k through ‘cash stuffing’ trend

Millennials struggling to build their wealth have flipped the idea of ​​having a cashless society on their head by reviving a saving technique that originated well before their grandparents’ era.

“Cash stuffing” is the latest money-saving trend growing in popularity in Australia, after it educated hundreds of young people in the UK and US on how to successfully budget.

Also known as the envelope method, cash stuffing involves withdrawing money – typically your monthly earnings – from your bank account and allocating it to a folder which represents a specific spending category.

Folders may represent weekly shopping budgets, holiday savings, fuel costs, mortgage repayments or bills.

The “cash stuffing” hashtag has accrued over 532 million views on TikTok, while sites like Amazon and Etsy have too jumped on board, selling folders, stickers and stationery specifically made for the trend to help kickstart the saving journey.

Daniel Jovevski, CEO and founder of budgeting and debt management app WeMoney, says the saving technique has re-emerged as Australians learn to cope with the rising cost of living.

“Cash stuffing or what budgeters call the ‘Envelope Method’ is back in vogue. This is largely driven out of the requirement to budget now more than ever with envelopes or pencil cases being the primary tool for people to squirrel money away,” Mr Jovevski told news.com.au.

“Tougher times with inflation and cost of living pressures have brought back this old but effective method as consumers combat increasing petrol and food prices.”

Caroline from CAROCASH, commenced her cash stuffing journey last year after learning about personal finance expert Dave Ramsey’s envelope system, which closely mirrors cash stuffing.

The small business owner told news.com.au that she has since saved almost $30,000 using the system.

“I saw how by dividing up your income into separate envelopes, you can save up and prepare for annual bills, holidays, medical and of course for savings,” Caroline said.

While Caroline insists that she is not a financial adviser, she has shared with others how simple the technique can be by documenting her journey on her YouTube channel.

How does cash stuffing differ from internet banking?

Simply put, cash stuffing is a physical method of internet banking.

Rather than splitting your weekly earnings into separate online banking accounts as some budgeters do, those using the cash stuffing method split their income into physical folders.

However Mr Jovevski said there is a psychological aspect to cash stuffing that most don’t experience through online banking or paying for transactions using their credit or debit card.

“This trend has deep behavioral benefits with prominent behavioral scientists identifying the method as helping people increase their “pain of paying”, meaning when we pay with cash we feel a little pain when we see the amount of money leave our wallets or envelopes,” he said.

“Contrasting this against tap-and-pay, where you don’t really see the physical movement of cash, it makes it easier to spend as all the friction has been removed.”

Caroline admitted that this was her situation prior to jumping on the cash stuffing bandwagon. Her de ella old spending habits de ella meant she would unknowingly use all her income de ella on other purchases prior to paying her bills.

The benefits of cash stuffing

As the cost of living continues on an upward trend, Australians are becoming more conscious of their spending limits and habits.

The search phrase “what is budgeting” has jumped in interest by more than 65 per cent in the last year on Google Search whereas “budgeting apps” has been the most searched query in relation to the word “budget”.

And with budgeting the entire purpose behind cash stuffing, Caroline said there’s no other reason as to why someone who is struggling to manage their savings shouldn’t give the technique a go.

“Benefits include changing spending habits and your mindset on spontaneous spending, living within your means and being prepared for bills,” she said.

Other benefits Caroline mentioned include not feeling the need to get a credit card or use Afterpay and having less financial stress once you’ve mastered your budget.

“The more friction we have in paying, the less we spend and the easier it is to stay on track with our budgets,” Mr Jovevski added.

Being aware of the risks

While it’s great to have cash in hand, it doesn’t come without a heightened risk of losing your money. This may be through theft, fire, or simply misplacing it.

One way Caroline has overcome the threat of mishandling her hard-earned cash is by saving up to a certain amount before banking it, and then using “prop” or “fake money” to represent the savings in her account.

“As a graphic designer myself, I was able to create some fake play money for larger denominations – starting from $250 all the way to $10,000 – that we do not officially have here in Australia,” she said.

“Once I reach $1000 in cash, I swap that with a prop note and get the $1000 back to the bank.”

Another disadvantage associated with cash stuffing is its inability to earn interest as well as the time it takes to separate your money into folders and record the value in a spreadsheet or notebook.

“While there are plenty of upside benefits, the trade-off is additional work,” Mr Jovevski said.

“You have to consider if the cash-stuffing method aligns with the outcomes you want to achieve with your budget.”

One question that a lot of people ask Caroline is “how do you work out how much to budget for?”.

The savvy saver said she works out how much her bills will cost her on a monthly or yearly basis and then divides that amount by the number of weeks she has until it needs to be paid.

“Say you get paid weekly and you have an annual bill that is $700. You divide 700 by 52 which equals $13.50. That is what you would put aside each pay to have that bill “fully funded” in a year when it is due,” she said.

With a little bit of extra time and preparation, Caroline said anyone can give the saving technique a try.

“Honestly, just give it a go. There’s no schemes or tricks. All that is required is a little more than your time; time to go to the bank or ATM for the cash withdrawal, and time to sit down, make a budget and divide your cash into envelopes.”

Ballarat potato growers ask McCain Foods for 78 per cent price increase

Potato farmers in the Ballarat region are demanding a pay rise for their produce, claiming McCain Foods does not pay a fair price for the popular mealtime vegetable.

Last season McCain Foods paid growers an average of 33 cents per kilo of potatoes delivered to the local processing plant, a figure that farmers said was well below the rising cost of production.

A farmer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the local growers’ association had approached the processor on Monday asking for 59 cents per kilo, a 78 per cent price increase.

The requested price rise reflected the current cost of production and rising input costs, such as increased fertilizer and fuel prices, and also allowed the farmers to turn a profit.

The farmer said eleven factors such as weed and pest control, irrigation, harvest, labor and transport were considered it cost approximately 51 cents to produce a kilo of spuds leaving producers running at a loss.

In January, storms also damaged a large portion of this year’s crop, which meant some farmers lost more than a third of their yield and reduced the Ballarat region’s potato harvest by 20 per cent.

McCain Foods has previously been investigated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) over allegations of unconscionable conduct towards growers.

A McCain Foods spokesperson said the company engaged in constant dialogue with growers throughout the course of the year.

“We cannot provide details on our confidential pricing discussions with them,” the spokesperson said.

“We are proud of the continued investment we have demonstrated in recent years and will continue to support our customers, our people, our growers, and the hundreds of people within our communities who depend on us for their livelihoods.”

In Tasmania, farmers have recently rejected price offers made by food manufacturers Simplot for their potato crop this season.

Cost of living crisis: Milk costs $9.20 in remote indigenous township of Kaltukatjara

With grocery bills rapidly increasing due to supply chain issues and rising inflation, all Australians are feeling the pinch. But in remote Aboriginal communities, the situation is even more dire.

A social media post of a receipt from the Docker River store in the remote indigenous community of Kaltukatjara, in the Northern Territory – where many families already live close to the breadline – showed a 2L bottle of Pura Milk cost $9.20.

While supermarket chain Aldi has warned grocery prices will “inevitably” continue to rise after the inflation rate surged to 6.1 per cent, by comparison, at a Sydney Woolworths, the same product this week cost $3.10.

In the post from April 26, Facebook user Spirit Walker pleaded with former aboriginal affairs minister Ben Wyatt to step in to help those living in the small township, southwest of Alice Springs.

“!!!Getting close to $10 dollars to pay 2L milk out in Aboriginal communities soon!!!” he wrote. “You need to do (some) more work aboriginal affairs minister Ben Wyatt because this is going beyond the joke now uncle?

“(Help get this food price back down low again out in community.)”

He added: “Prices like this for everyday goods has been the experience for Aboriginal people since the first stores opened.”

Back in December 2021 during the Morrison government’s Food Security inquiry, Mr Wyatt said “Improving food security and making affordable, fresh and nutritious foods more available in remote indigenous communities is an important part of improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people .”

But Spirit Walker insisted since then “nothing has been done” to resolve the cost of living crisis.

The post hit a nerve on the social media platform, receiving 602 reactions, 346 shares and 183 comments, with one Facebook user branding the hefty price tag “highway robbery”, while others stated the situation was “disgusting” and a “disgrace”.

“That’s completely unfair and taking advantage of people that are living under the poverty line, it’s inhumane and as far as I am concerned it’s against basic human rights to not be able to access fairly priced food, goods and services,” one wrote.

Another commented, “I have a feeling it’s going to get a lot worse, the entire supply chain relies on a fragile system and finite energy sources. Time to decentralize again and look to community farming.”

The indigenous township of Kaltukatjara had a population of 355 at the 2006 census.

One social media user defended the store, stating: “The shop has to supply BBQs for the whole community throughout the year.

“It has to provide food hampers for Xmas and other occasions when community members need to attend other communities for funerals, etc. The shop has to pay for the bus service to get them there. The last one I knew of was $6000.

“How are these services to be provided if the shop doesn’t make a profit …”

Donna Donzow, an operations manager for the non-profit EON Foundation which helps grow and supply fresh produce to communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, told 7NEWS.com.au she noticed a mixed salad pack was $17 in Minyerri, a town 240km southeast of Katherine, in June.

The same product cost a mere $3 at a Sydney Woolies this week.

Guardian reported that a 2021 Amsant report showed groceries were 56 per cent more expensive in remote communities than regional supermarkets in the Northern Territory due to poor quality roads and long supply chains.

According to Rob Totten, store manager of a supermarket in Maningrida, Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, the price of some food products had “gone through the roof”.

“Baked beans have gone from $29.95 to $33.80 a carton. One carton of corned beef was $151 in April and it’s now $176,” he told TheGuardian.

North Carolina woman goes TikTok viral for living in her Honda Civic

The “Van Life” movement may conjure impressions of a freeing nomadic lifestyle in a nicely designed vehicle that looks great on social media, but a North Carolina woman has taken to TikTok to show the honest side of living on four wheels.

As reported by the new york postNikita Crump, who boasts 1 million followers on the app, has documented her experiences of living in her Honda Civic, which reportedly came from absolute necessity.

After struggling to pay her rent on time and skipping meals to save money – all the while going into debt despite working two jobs – she decided to call her car her home to avoid falling further into financial ruin.

Crump moved into her Honda in late 2019 and has lived in it ever since – and despite her candid discussions of what it takes to live this way, it is a way of avoiding today’s exorbitant costs of living, as inflation continues to boost food prices and , yes, rents.

It’s a way of saving money, but a number of her videos come with TikTok disclaimers saying, “Participating in this activity could result in you or others getting hurt.”

Crump discusses safety measures she takes. In a video from May, which earned more than 3 million views, she shows the window covers she uses at night-time to block out any views inside, which she says in the caption are handmade and “are effective when it comes to stealth, safety and insulation”.

Reflective and insulated materials coat one side of the covers, while another has black fabric, which goes against the window.

“It’s totally inconspicuous,” she says in the clip. “Nobody knows I’m in here.”

Two months later, on July 4, Crump posted another video showing her ways of finding places to sleep each night. She uses satellite view on Google Maps to locate “nice” neighborhoods, or those whose aerials show big properties with their own pools.

Then she zooms in to see if other cars are parked on the streets. The next step, she says, is to go at night-time to check it out for herself.

“The neighborhood is clean, nice and quiet – and I can blend in,” she says of one area in an undisclosed city where she spent a recent night next to an ivy-covered brick wall.

Other videos show her sleeping in parking lots, covered windows, and document the practicalities of living in such a small space on four wheels. On July 5, viewers can see her start the day by removing the window covers after folding and tucking her bedding onto her back seat.

She then heads into a Planet Fitness, whose parking lot she spent the night in, for a shower. She tugs a toiletry kit with her inside to wash up and brush her teeth.

Next comes eating. In that same clip, she shows a small, black tray that attaches to her steering wheel that she uses as a makeshift table to eat canned fruit, peanut butter sandwiches – or even take-out orders from Subway.

Later on, she shows the only way laundry can get done: in a laundromat at a stop along her way to Oregon.

“I always fold my laundry in the laundromat – that is not something that I’m trying to do in my car,” she says.

What’s more, there are storage containers in her trunk and portable devices to keep her electronics charged.

“Here’s things in my car that just make sense for homeless life,” she says, classifying her life candidly.

“I’ve been homeless by definition most of my adult life,” she says. “I’ve even lived in my car before, briefly.

“So I’m not that unfamiliar with being in uncomfortable situations and being homeless.”

Despite the serious nature of her situation, she receives an array of comments on her posts – including “This looks so lonely” and “Hotel Civic.” Others, meanwhile, support her.

“I love your resilience,” one commenter wrote in a July video, while another recent clip had another tell her, “Supporting your journey through and through!”

One even learned tips of the trade.

“Thank you for this,” another commenter replied. “I need to leave my place unexpectedly. This is unbelievably helpful.”
