North Carolina county to place an AR-15 in each school in response to the Uvalde massacre

A North Carolina school system will place AR-15s in each school building this upcoming school year in a dramatic move meant to buff up school safety,

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and school officials have decided to place the weapons in all six schools in the county when classes begin later this month in response to the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 students and two teachers.

Each of the guns would be locked inside a safe, as well as extra ammunition and breaching tools, Sheriff Buddy Harwood told the Asheville Citizen-Times. He noted the delayed response by law enforcement to stop the attack on Robb Elementary School in May was a rationale for the measure.

“Those officers were in that building for so long, and that suspect was able to infiltrate that building and injure and kill so many kids,” Harwood told the newspaper. “I just want to make sure my deputies are prepared in the event that happens.”

There will be school resource officers at each of the six schools, including the three elementary schools, according to the Citizen-Times.

Officers have been training with instructors from Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College, he said.

“The reason we put the breaching tools in the safes is that in the event we have someone barricaded in a door, we won’t have to wait on the fire department to get there,” Harwood told the outlet.

“We’ll have those tools to be able to breach that door if needed. I do not want to have to run back out to the car to grab an AR, because that’s time wasted.

“Hopefully we’ll never need it, but I want my guys to be as prepared as prepared can be.”

Ahead of the Aug. 22 start of the school year, Madison County Superintendent Will Hoffman said school leaders have been meeting with local law enforcement to review various safety measures.

“I hate that we’ve come to a place in our nation where I’ve got to put a safe in our schools, and lock that safe up for my deputies to be able to acquire an AR-15,” Harwood told the Citizen -Times.

“But, we can shut it off and say it won’t happen in Madison County, but we never know. I want the parents of Madison County to know we’re going to take every measure necessary to ensure our kids are safe in this school system.

“If my parents, as a whole, want me to stand at that door with that AR strapped around that officer’s neck, then I’m going to do whatever my parents want as a whole to keep our kids safe.”

Zodiac signs causing parents to time their pregnancy for right birth month

Parents are timing their pregnancies to coincide with desirable zodiac sign birth months – and it’s a phenomenon that stretches back years.

Several parents are reportedly planning the conception so that nine months later their child will be born in the right month.

There’s multiple threads in Reddit dedicated to the trend.

“Has anyone tried their future children’s zodiac planning based on you and your s/o zodiac?” the Reddit question begins.

“My husband thinks I’m crazy for wanting to plan our next child according to signs so that when we do have another child we can all be compatible.”

Dozens weighed in, including one person who said: “Dad is a Gemini, mum is an Aquarius, and they planned me as a Gemini and I was born in the dead center of Gemini.

“I think it’s a great idea! My parents and I had an incredible relationship.”

Another added: “I like the idea of adding a Libra. I have had three best friends that have been Libras so I thought maybe that could work!”

According to Vicebelief in zodiac signs is prevalent among multiple aspiring parents in America who plan when they want to conceive their child.

However, it doesn’t always go to plan.

The US outlet spoke to several parents who had their babies slightly too early or too late to fulfill their wishes of having the perfect zodiac sign.

Mackenzie Warren, from the US state of North Carolina, was hoping for a Scorpio child but her daughter ended up being Libra.

The couple tried again but deliberately delayed it hoping to avoid Pisces. The second time it worked, as they ended up in Aquarius.

Then there’s Kimberly Miller, from LA, who told the publication that she really didn’t want a Virgo child because that had been her mother’s zodiac, who was quite uptight.

Accordingly, when her due date approached, she tried all kinds of things to kick the process along as the Virgo months neared.

The mum-to-be ate ‘maternity salad’ and even underwent Buddhist chanting upon a friend’s suggestion.

Her daughter, now a teenager, is reportedly very laid-back despite being a Virgo.

911 call reveals NC pilot Charley Hew Crooks jumped from plane

A 911 call released Tuesday revealed that the co-pilot who mysteriously vanished mid-air in North Carolina had “jumped” out of the aircraft.

Two Federal Aviation Administration employees could be heard saying that Charles Hew Crooks’ co-pilot reported that he leaped out of the damaged plane before it made an emergency landing at Raleigh Durham International Airport on Friday, WRAL reported.

“This is from Raleigh Airport,” an FAA air traffic controller said on the recording. “We have a pilot who was inbound to the field. His co-pilot jumped out of the aircraft. He made impact to the ground and here are the coordinates.”

The 23-year-old’s body was later discovered in the backyard of a home in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, about 30 miles south of the airport.

In the 13-minute call, an FAA employee said Crooks’ co-pilot had reported he “jumped out without the parachute, so he might have impact to the ground.”

“I am sure the pilot is going to be shaken up,” one FAA employee said. “I have no idea. He literally just said, ‘My pilot just jumped out.’”

The recording captured the FAA employees frantically trying to figure out what happened to Crooks.

“I guess at this point in time, all we can do is recovery,” an FAA controller told a dispatcher. “I don’t know. I don’t know. This is the craziest thing ever.”

Wake County Emergency Management officials told WRAL the initial 911 call was received at 2:30 pm Friday. The aircraft, a CASA 212-200, made an emergency landing about 18 minutes later, WRAL reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the ongoing investigation. Preliminary information indicates the aircraft sustained substantial damage to its landing gear and fuselage, prompting the pilot to ask to make an emergency landing.

“Once the aircraft had landed, it was reconfirmed based on a report the pilot said the person in the aircraft had exited the aircraft prior to landing,” Wake County Emergency Management Chief of Operations Darshan Patel told the station.

Crooks’ co-pilot, whose identity hasn’t been released, was taken to a hospital for minor injuries during the landing. He was discharged later that day.

Crooks’ father, Hew Crooks, previously told WRAL he had no idea what happened during his son’s final moments.

“We can’t process it right now,” he said. “I don’t know.”

Devin Lynch, a friend of Crooks, said the incident doesn’t match what he knew about the late pilot.

“I’ve known Charles for three years,” Lynch told WRAL. “He was a pilot from the day I met him. I’ve flown with him a few times, and I can tell you firsthand what kind of pilot he was. He followed every rule to the letter.”

Lynch said he’d like to hear what the cockpit voice recorders picked up at the time.

“I would be interested in hearing the CVR recording because I’d like to hear what was going on in the cockpit that wasn’t being communicated to air traffic control,” Lynch said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the ongoing investigation. Preliminary information indicates the aircraft sustained substantial damage to its landing gear and fuselage, prompting the pilot to ask to make an emergency landing.

The pilots were flying at the time for Rampart Aviation, which has not responded to inquiries on the nature of the flight, WRAL reported.

Air traffic controllers say co-pilot ‘jumped’ from plane

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A 911 call from air traffic controllers suggests that a co-pilot may have jumped from a damaged plane before the other pilot made an emergency landing in North Carolina, according to a recording of the call that was released Tuesday .

It’s been unclear exactly how or why Charles Hew Crooks, 23, exited the small cargo plane on Friday afternoon about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Raleigh-Durham International Airport. He did not have a parachute, and his body was found in a backyard in the town of Fuquay-Varina.

Two unnamed Federal Aviation Administration employees can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher that the plane was heading to the airport. The pilot onboard had apparently told them that his co-pilot had “jumped out of the aircraft,” news outlets reported.

“We have a pilot that was inbound to the field,” a controller told the 911 dispatcher, according to WRAL. “His co-pilot jumped out of the aircraft. He made impact to the ground and here are the coordinates.”

The call lasted about 13 minutes, with the controllers stating several times that the co-pilot had jumped.

Wake County Emergency Management Chief of Operations Darshan Patel said the initial 911 call prompted the search for Crooks.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to its landing gear and fuselage, according to preliminary information gathered by the National Transportation Safety Board. The investigation is ongoing.

North Carolina woman goes TikTok viral for living in her Honda Civic

The “Van Life” movement may conjure impressions of a freeing nomadic lifestyle in a nicely designed vehicle that looks great on social media, but a North Carolina woman has taken to TikTok to show the honest side of living on four wheels.

As reported by the new york postNikita Crump, who boasts 1 million followers on the app, has documented her experiences of living in her Honda Civic, which reportedly came from absolute necessity.

After struggling to pay her rent on time and skipping meals to save money – all the while going into debt despite working two jobs – she decided to call her car her home to avoid falling further into financial ruin.

Crump moved into her Honda in late 2019 and has lived in it ever since – and despite her candid discussions of what it takes to live this way, it is a way of avoiding today’s exorbitant costs of living, as inflation continues to boost food prices and , yes, rents.

It’s a way of saving money, but a number of her videos come with TikTok disclaimers saying, “Participating in this activity could result in you or others getting hurt.”

Crump discusses safety measures she takes. In a video from May, which earned more than 3 million views, she shows the window covers she uses at night-time to block out any views inside, which she says in the caption are handmade and “are effective when it comes to stealth, safety and insulation”.

Reflective and insulated materials coat one side of the covers, while another has black fabric, which goes against the window.

“It’s totally inconspicuous,” she says in the clip. “Nobody knows I’m in here.”

Two months later, on July 4, Crump posted another video showing her ways of finding places to sleep each night. She uses satellite view on Google Maps to locate “nice” neighborhoods, or those whose aerials show big properties with their own pools.

Then she zooms in to see if other cars are parked on the streets. The next step, she says, is to go at night-time to check it out for herself.

“The neighborhood is clean, nice and quiet – and I can blend in,” she says of one area in an undisclosed city where she spent a recent night next to an ivy-covered brick wall.

Other videos show her sleeping in parking lots, covered windows, and document the practicalities of living in such a small space on four wheels. On July 5, viewers can see her start the day by removing the window covers after folding and tucking her bedding onto her back seat.

She then heads into a Planet Fitness, whose parking lot she spent the night in, for a shower. She tugs a toiletry kit with her inside to wash up and brush her teeth.

Next comes eating. In that same clip, she shows a small, black tray that attaches to her steering wheel that she uses as a makeshift table to eat canned fruit, peanut butter sandwiches – or even take-out orders from Subway.

Later on, she shows the only way laundry can get done: in a laundromat at a stop along her way to Oregon.

“I always fold my laundry in the laundromat – that is not something that I’m trying to do in my car,” she says.

What’s more, there are storage containers in her trunk and portable devices to keep her electronics charged.

“Here’s things in my car that just make sense for homeless life,” she says, classifying her life candidly.

“I’ve been homeless by definition most of my adult life,” she says. “I’ve even lived in my car before, briefly.

“So I’m not that unfamiliar with being in uncomfortable situations and being homeless.”

Despite the serious nature of her situation, she receives an array of comments on her posts – including “This looks so lonely” and “Hotel Civic.” Others, meanwhile, support her.

“I love your resilience,” one commenter wrote in a July video, while another recent clip had another tell her, “Supporting your journey through and through!”

One even learned tips of the trade.

“Thank you for this,” another commenter replied. “I need to leave my place unexpectedly. This is unbelievably helpful.”
