Hawaii is the ‘perfect place to retire by the beach,’ says millionaire—but there are 3 big downsides

In 2012, at 34 years old, I left my investment banking job and retired early with a net worth of $3 million. Currently, I live in San Francisco with my wife and two young children.

But since 1977, I’ve regularly traveled back and forth to Hawaii, where my parents have been retired for 15 years. They have a simple life with a modest budget, living off retirement savings and a government pension — thanks to the three decades they spent working in the US Foreign Service.

Seeing my parents live their dream, we want to follow suit. Our plan is to move to Hawaii by 2025. Between my parents’ experience and my own, I’ve learned a lot about the ins and outs of retiring in Hawaii.

Our consensus it’s the perfect place to retire by the beach — although there are still a few downsides to keep in mind.

How much money do you need to retire in Hawaii?

The downsides of retiring in Hawaii

Before you start your beach retirement plan, beware of these three biggest downsides first:

1. High cost of housing

As of June 2022, the median single-family home price in Honolulu is $1,050,000. Meanwhile, the median price for a condo on Oahu, which is considered a great place to retire on a budget, is currently $535,000 — up 16% from June 2021.

If you want to retire in Hawaii, consider buying a small condo or rent, rather than purchasing a single-family home. The average rent for a 594 square foot apartment is roughly $2,042, according to RentCafe.

2. Expensive groceries and gas

According to a 2021 report by the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, Hawaii’s grocery prices are the highest in the nation.

For example, I’ve paid $8.99 for a gallon of whole milk on Oahu, whereas in San Francisco, it’s about $6. And while Hawaiian-grown mangoes are delicious, they can cost about $6 each!

Further, if you like to drive, Hawaii has unusually high gas prices. The average price per gallon in the state today is $5.41 and is continuing to rise, according to AAA, while the national average is $4.03.

3. You may feel claustrophobic

It only takes about four hours to drive around the 597 square miles of Oahu. Although the island does hold about one million people, in my experience, it can still feel small.

And with the pandemic continuing to make air and ship travel unappealing, it is possible that you could feel a bit stuck at times, without those options at your disposal.

The benefits of retiring in Hawaii

Yes, it’s expensive. But if you’re curious what it could be like to retire in Hawaii, here are some surprising perks:

1. Less stress and top health care

Hawaii was ranked second in terms of happiness and well-being in a 2021 study from health care company Sharecare.

My parents worked in Washington DC, Paris, Guangzhou, Kobe, Taipei and other big cities before retiring in Honolulu. They’ve found their Hawaiian lifestyle to be incredibly relaxing compared to all the other cities they’ve lived in.

2. Top-rated healthcare

The United Health Foundation also ranks Hawaii as the third healthiest state in the country. And according to US News’ list of Best States for Health Care, Hawaii takes the top spot.

I’m not surprised. Hawaii has beautiful weather nearly year-round, public beaches and parks, a variety of locally grown and raised food, and great access to preventive medical and dental treatment.

If you’re looking for a more healthy and active lifestyle, you can certainly find it in Hawaii.

3. ‘Ohana’ means family

An important part of Hawaiian culture is the care and nurturing of family and friends, or “ohana.” I’ve observed that nearly everywhere you go, whether it’s to a restaurant or to the mall, things are set up to be a family-friendly experience.

Plus, it’s not uncommon to have multiple generations under one roof in Hawaii. While my wife, children and I probably won’t live in my parents’ house, we hope to rent or buy nearby.

4. Tremendous diversity

Hawaii topped the list of states that have the most diverse population in the country, coming ahead of California and Nevada, according to data from the US Census Bureau.

5. Decent tax advantages

Hawaii ranks as having one of the lowest property tax rates in the country, at an average of only 0.28%. If you have a Federal pension, it’s exempt from state income tax. And the sales tax rate is a reasonable 4% to 4.5%, versus 7.25% to 8.25% in California.

However, Hawaii also has one of the highest state income tax rates, topping out at 11% if you make over $200,000. If you make between $48,001 and $150,000, you pay a state income tax rate of 8.25%.

Mercedes-Benz pairs with game engine developer for MB.OS

Mercedes-Benz has partnered with software company Unity Technologies to power the infotainment elements in its upcoming Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).

Unity says its software engine will give future Mercedes-Benz vehicles infotainment displays with “stunning graphics and interactivity with speed and performance”.

Industry Technologies is best known for developing the game engine used in Pokémon Go, Monument Valley and Cuphead. The latter of these games has been ported to the Tesla infotainment system and can be played in the car.

The US-based software company also develops “real-time 3D” technology that’s used in a range of design and engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and service and operations applications.

Mercedes-Benz AG developers will use Unity Industrial Collection to create the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) for the MB.OS Human Machine Interface (HMI), which is another term for instrument cluster and infotainment screen.

This new infotainment operating system was previewed with the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX electric research prototype.

Unity Technologies was chosen by Mercedes-Benz as its HMI developer platform of choice “following a rigorous, comprehensive evaluation process against competing real-time 3D and HMI development solutions”.

It’s believed one of the competitor companies Mercedes-Benz looked into was Epic Games with its Unreal Engine which is going to power future Volvo infotainment systems.

Unity Technologies says its “leadership in real-time 3D development” will allow Mercedes to potentially implement 3D avatars that can act as “digital butlers”, along with 3D maps, and artificial intelligence (AI) that can change vehicle settings.

The first Mercedes-Benz vehicles running MB.OS will debut in 2024. It will eventually populate throughout the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range.

The first vehicles featuring MB.OS will be built on the new MMA small car platform, which is going to underpin four new vehicles.

This new platform may be the last to be introduced with the option of internal combustion power, as from 2025 onwards Mercedes-Benz has said all new platforms will be electric-only.

These other electric platforms include the MB.EA architecture for medium to large vehicles, AMG.EA for performance cars, and VAN.EA for vans.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has previously confirmed it’s going to be trimming the number of small models it offers while releasing more high-end vehicles as it targets higher margins.

The company says it anticipates “disproportionate growth” in what it calls its Top-End vehicle segment, citing a 40 per cent increase in S-Class sales last year plus “record” Mercedes-Maybach sales.

This internal segment comprises all Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach vehicles, as well as the G-Class and essentially everything with an S: GLS, EQS, EQS SUV and S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz is also going to cut its range of Entry Luxury models from seven to four, though it isn’t leaving this part of the market.

The company says these changes will “reposition Mercedes-Benz in the segment, honoring in more precisely on the wishes of discerning customers”.

Mercedes-Benz also still plans to go EV-only by 2030, albeit with the “wherever market conditions allow” disclaimer, and aims to be CO2-neutral by 2039.

STARBURST brand to be discontinued in Australia after supply chain issues

One of the world’s largest confectionary manufacturers has been forced to respond after Australians suddenly struggled to find Starburst lollies on supermarket shelves.

One Sydney TikToker revealed she’d been searching for the lollies everywhere, in a video that has been watched 250,000 times.

“Can someone tell me where these lollies went?” she said, “I’ve been looking everywhere – Big W, Coles, whatever – these lollies don’t exist … did they just stop selling them and no one realized?”

More than 1000 people agreed, commenting that they, too, had struggled to source the range which includes Starburst Fruit Chews, Gummies, GummiBursts, lollipops and Jellybeans.

“I love those lollies but they stopped selling them like what, why?” one said. Another added: “I’ve been looking for them too.”

While a third person said: “Oh my god my childhood I miss them so much.”

A spokesperson for Mars Wrigley, which manufactures Starburst, told 7NEWS.com.au that the reason the popular treats were so hard to find in Australia – is because the brand had been discontinued.

“We regularly review our Mars Wrigley product range to ensure we’re offering our consumers great tasting products that are also great value for money,” the spokesperson said.

“Our STARBURST® products are imported from Europe and like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years.”

The company said that after “reviewing all options”, it had made the “difficult decision” to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022. Instead, it will focus on products manufactured locally.

“As a proud Australian manufacturer for more than 60 years, we are taking this opportunity to prioritize and invest in the brands and products we make locally in Australia such as M&Ms, Maltesers, Skittles, Snickers, Extra and Eclipse.”

Lawyer: Giuliani won’t testify Tuesday in Ga. election test

ATLANTA (AP) — Rudy Giuliani will not appear as scheduled Tuesday before a special grand jury in Atlanta that’s investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others illegally tried to interfere in the 2020 general election in Georgia, his lawyer said.

A judge last month had ordered Giuliani, a Trump lawyer and former New York City mayor, to appear before the special grand jury Tuesday.

But Giuliani’s attorney, Robert Costello, told The Associated Press on Monday that Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, who’s overseeing the special grand jury, had excused Giuliani for the day.

Nothing in publicly available court documents indicates that Giuliani is excused from appearing, but McBurney has scheduled a hearing for 12:30 pm Tuesday to hear arguments on a court filing from Giuliani seeking to delay his appearance. In a court filing Monday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis asked the judge to deny Giuliani’s request for a delay and to instruct him to appear before the special grand jury as ordered.

Willis opened an investigation early last year, and a special grand jury with subpoena power was seated in May at her request.

Last month she filed petitions seeking to compel testimony from seven Trump advisers and associates, including Giuliani. Because they don’t live in Georgia, she had to use a process that involves getting a judge in the state where they live to order them to appear.

New York Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber on July 13 issued an order directing Giuliani to appear before the special grand jury on Aug. 9 and on any other dates ordered by the court in Atlanta.

Giuliani’s legal team last week asked Willis’ office to delay his appearance, saying he was unable to travel because of a medical procedure. That request was rejected after Willis’ team found evidence on social media that he had traveled since his medical procedure.

A Giuliani attorney then clarified to Willis’s team that Giuliani is not cleared for air travel, but Willis still refused to postpone his appearance, the motion says.

In her Monday court filing, Willis wrote that her team had obtained records indicating that between July 19 and July 21, Giuliani bought multiple airline tickets, including tickets to Rome, Italy, and Zurich, Switzerland, for travel dates between July 22 and July 29 Willis said her team offered to provide alternative transportation — including bus or train fare — if Giuliani wasn’t cleared for air travel.

Giuliani had also offered to appear virtually, for example by Zoom, his motion says.

“It is important to note here that Mr. Giuliani is no way seeking to inappropriately delay, or obstruct these proceedings or avoid giving evidence or testimony that is not subject to some claim of privilege in this matter,” the motion says, noting that Giuliani had appeared virtually before the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and testified for more than nine hours.

“Mr. Giuliani is willing to do the same here under conditions that replicate a grand jury proceeding,” the motion says.

In the petition for Giuliani’s testimony, Willis identified him as both a personal attorney for Trump and a lead attorney for his campaign.

She wrote that he and others presented a Georgia state Senate subcommittee with a video recording of election workers that Giuliani allegedly showed them producing “suitcases” of unlawful ballots from unknown sources, outside the view of election poll watchers.

Within 24 hours of that hearing on Dec. 3, 2020, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office had debunked the video and said that it had found that no voter fraud had taken place at the site. Nevertheless, Giuliani continued to make statements to the public and in subsequent legislative hearings claiming widespread voter fraud using that debunked video, Willis wrote.

Evidence shows that Giuliani’s appearance and testimony at the hearing “was part of a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere,” the petition says.

‘Fill up now’: Aussie drivers urged to head to the petrol pump before prices skyrocket

Australian motorists are being urged to take advantage of falling petrol prices and fill up now to make the most of the “lowest levels we have seen for some time” before it is too late.

Prices across the nation last week were down almost 20 per cent from their July peak and experts say more price relief is on the horizon.

For more Personal Finance related news and videos check out Personal Finance >>

The national average pump price fell by 8.1c to $1.73 per liter last week, down from a recent peak of $2.12 in the first week of July.

National Roads and Motorists’ Association’s Peter Khoury said Australia was nearing the bottom of the price cycle, but warned it could soon jump back up.

“They’ve been falling now for several weeks in accordance with the price cycle, but they have definitely fallen to levels we haven’t seen for some time,” he told 7NEWS.

Khoury said Sydney had hit its cheapest average price since April, reaching $1.62 on Monday.

“We are almost at the bottom of the cycle,” I explained.

“But also, we know oil prices have been falling steadily since hitting those high points that we saw in June.

“The average in the middle of June for regularly unleaded in Sydney was $2.19. It’s now at $1.62. That gives you an idea of how much oil prices have failed.”

While motorists will welcome the relief at the pump, Khoury says it is not clear how long it will last.

“The falls are highly volatile,” he said, adding “we have no idea whether they’re going to be sustained long term.

“What we do know is that over the last two or three weeks it’s been pretty consistent, driven largely by concerns about the global economy.”

While it has taken about 50 days for prices to fall this low, Khoury says, it will only take a few days for them to jump back to the top.

“That’s just the unfortunate reality of price cycles nationally is that when they go down, they go down very slowly, and when they jump, they absolutely skyrocket,” he said.

“So at some point in the coming days, possibly later this week we will see that price cycle turn. And that’s why it’s really important for (motorists) to fill up today or tomorrow.

“Keep a very close eye because you’re going to see lots of service stations are below a $1.60.”

As for when motorists will see cheap prices again, Kheary says it depends on how long the next cycle is.

Sydney Pork Rolls bakery lashed on Reddit over extra charge for cutting rolls in half

A Sydney bakery has been lashed online for charging customers a 20c surcharge just to cut their lunch in half.

A photo posted to Reddit revealed the Vietnamese bakery, Sydney Pork Rolls, has a list of surcharges for the addition of extra ingredients such as salad, chilli, meat, ham, egg, pate and mayo.

When purchasing a banh mi from the store in the inner Sydney suburb of Haymarket, the sign informs customers extra salad will set you back an extra 50c, while extra meat and egg is an extra $1.50.

However, the one surcharge that had customers smoking online is the extra charge for cutting the banh mi in half.

At the bottom of the surcharge list, the sign states a “request to cut your roll in half” will cost an extra 20 cents.

Users on Reddit were quick to express their disbelief at the extra charge.

“This is a joke!” one user commented. “This pricing is getting outrageous, all in the name of inflation,” another said.

“They should ask ‘would you like to cut it in half?’ like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if ‘you want fries with that?’,” another declared.

However, some Reddit users defended the shop, saying the outlet was well within its rights to charge extra for the service.

“Getting it cut in half means the two halves are wrapped and packaged separately. It’s completely reasonable to charge extra,” one user commented.

Perth real estate: Suburbs where it now costs more than $1m to buy a house

Eleven suburbs have joined the $1m median house price club as values continue to climb in Perth.

While other states are seeing house prices fall, Perth has lagged behind most of the other capitals.

It means despite rising interest rates and cost of living pressures, the housing market in WA has soared in the past year.

Six of the 11 suburbs recorded more than 20 per cent price growth during the 2021-22 financial year, according to the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia.

Marmion, Mount Hawthorn, North Perth, Fremantle and Kensington had their median house prices tip above $1.1m at the end of June.

Gwelup, Booragoon, Karrinyup, Leederville, Iluka and Como reached $1m or more.

The top suburb is Marmion, which now has a median price of $1.27m — an increase of 32 per cent in the past year.

REIWA president Damian Collins said people had started to gain confidence in WA’s strong economy and property market, which had translated into more sales at the top end.

“All of these suburbs have had medians hovering below $1m for quite some time,” he said.

“It is impressive to see the demand for houses in these suburbs hold strong throughout the 2021-22 financial year, now placing them in Perth’s luxury market.”

Mr Collins said Perth’s premium market was attracting a lot of interest from buyers leading to strong price growth.

“If you are considering selling in one of these suburbs, now would be an opportunistic time to capitalize on this demand,” he said.
