Two men arrested over alleged assault and robbery of 20-year-old man last month

ACT police are still searching for a third man who was allegedly involved in assaulting a 20-year-old until he was unconscious in Canberra’s north last month.

ACT Policing said the alleged victim had stopped in the suburb of Hawker to offer assistance to a man he thought appeared to be lost about midday on Saturday, July 23.

That man allegedly then assaulted the 20-year-old, along with another two men who had been hiding nearby.

Police said that the 20-year-old was threatened with an icepick before he lost consciousness and that his shoes and wallet were stolen.

Police said the man’s account details were then used by his alleged attackers to commit credit card fraud.

When the man regained consciousness he was taken to the Canberra Hospital.

Police investigating the incident executed two search warrants yesterday, and arrested two men, who the ABC understands to be Kobi Guarini, 33, and Kalani Joliffe-Cole, 25.

Officers said that during the searches, they located the items alleged to have been stolen, and a detection dog found firearm components including shells, a barrel, a stock and an item they believed to be a suppressor.

Police said both men appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday.

It is understood Mr Guarini was charged with aggravated robbery, possession of stolen property and two counts of obtaining property by deception.

Mr Joliffe-Cole is believed to have been charged with aggravated robbery.

Adelaide Remand Center general manager revealed as the who stole $100,000 prisoners of suspect’ money

A suppression order on the identity of Adelaide Remand Center’s general manager, who is charged with theft, has now been lifted.

Brenton Williams is accused of stealing more than $100,000 of prisoners’ money.

The offense was allegedly committed between April 27 and July 27 this year.

The 47-year-old was arrested last week and charged with an aggravated count of dishonestly taking property without consent.

His identity was suppressed by the Adelaide Magistrates Court “in the interests of the administration of justice”.

That suppression order was lifted today, after the police prosecutor confirmed she did not want to pursue it.

The Department for Correctional Services says it will launch an independent investigation into theft.

“The department’s main priorities are the welfare of employees at the Adelaide Remand Center and the person who is currently before the courts,” a departmental spokeswoman said last week.

Serco, the private company that runs prisons in Adelaide’s CBD, said it would also be working with police.

Williams did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody, with the case scheduled to return to court in October.

Corrections Minister Joe Szakacs said the allegations are deeply concerning.

“It is incredibly disappointing to be informed of these serious allegations relating to the senior Serco employee at the privately run Adelaide Remand Centre,” said Mr Szakacs.

“These are serious allegations, which I’m deeply concerned about.

“I want answers, and a full review is being undertaken by DCS to investigate this matter.

“As the matter is now before the courts, the state government cannot make any further comment.”

Adelaide police officer allegedly stabbed with screwdriver by man who also attacked dog

An Adelaide police officer has been stabbed in the hand while making an arrest in the city’s west, according to SA Police.

Patrols were called to Arnold Close in Findon just before 2am today, after reports of two men acting suspiciously, trying door handles on cars and a home.

One man sped off on a mini dirt bike but was later seen by a police dog and his handler nearby.

When the suspect was confronted, he produced a screwdriver and allegedly attacked the officer, stabbing him in the hand and trying to also stab the dog.

Back-up was called and the man was arrested.

Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes said the officer was treated by paramedics at the scene.

“We’re still waiting to hear an update on how serious the injury to his hand is,” she said.

The dog’s stab-resistant harness prevented it from being injured.

A 27-year-old Findon man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to be treated for dog bite wounds and is expected to be charged later this morning.

Canberra man denied bail after ACT police charge him with drugging, raping and robbing his Grindr date

A Canberra man has been refused bail after he allegedly drugged, raped and robbed another man he met via the dating app Grindr.

Shae Elliott, 22, was arrested after he handed himself in to police.

The ACT Magistrates Court denied him bail today after hearing how the alleged victim was afraid because Mr Elliott knew where he lived.

Police said the pair made contact on Grindr and met late last month, when they had sex and took drugs, including methamphetamine.

The alleged victim told police he allowed Mr Elliott to put on some of his clothes. He also posted photos of himself with Mr Elliott on Facebook.

But court documents say the situation turned when Mr Elliott brought drugs, including GHB, to the alleged victim’s home.

The alleged victim said he agreed to take some GHB with Mr Elliott but was given a higher dose than he expected and passed out.

He contacted police when he woke up, discovered he had been allegedly raped and found his belongings had been stolen.

Police allege Mr Elliott took $400 in cash, a jacket, two pairs of shoes, a watch and perfume, and also wiped the alleged victim’s phone.

Prosecutors urged the court to deny bail, saying there was a risk Mr Elliott would not turn up to face his charges.

They noted the alleged crimes displayed escalation in his behaviour.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston refused bail, saying he was concerned about Mr Elliott’s history of violence and re-offending.

The case will return to court later this month.
