Who is Salman Rushdie? What is he famous for? Wasn’t he in Bridget Jones’ Diary?

Salman Rushdie is recovering with severe, “life-changing” injuries after being stabbed repeatedly before a scheduled public appearance in the US state of New York over the weekend.

He was due to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution when a man ran on stage and stabbed him.

Two days after the attack, Rushdie’s son, Zafar Rushdie, said his father was well enough to be taken off a ventilator, had been able to speak and his “usual feisty and defiant sense of humor” was still intact.

Here’s a shortcut guide to Rushdie’s story, why some people wanted him dead and how that made him fodder for sitcom jokes.

Who is Salman Rushdie?

Rushdie is an author, best known for his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses — dubbed by publishing house Penguin Books as one of the most controversial books of modern times.

The 75-year-old was born into a Muslim Kashmiri family in Bombay, now Mumbai, before moving to the UK.

He now lives in New York City as a US citizen.

Rushdie is a self-described lapse of Muslim and “hardline atheist.”

Why would someone want to kill him?

Some Muslims said The Satanic Verses contained blasphemous passages and mocked their beliefs.

The novel draws on elements of the life of Islamic Prophet Mohammed and the origin story of the Qur’an.

Theological scholar Myriam Renaud unpacked some of the criticisms in a piece for the Conversation in 2017:

Rushdie chooses a provocative name for Mohammed. The novel’s version of the Prophet is called Mahound — an alternative name for Mohammed sometimes used during the Middle Ages by Christians who considered him a devil.

And:

In Rushdie’s book, Salman [a character in the novel]for example, attributes certain actual passages in the Qur’an that place men “in charge of women” and give men the right to strike wives from whom they “fear arrogance”, to Mahound’s sexist views.

In 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran’s supreme leader, pronounced a fatwa calling upon Muslims to kill Rushdie.

The British government responded by putting him under police protection, with Rushdie going into hiding for nearly a decade.

Rushdie professed his profound regret for causing distress to Muslims while he was in hiding, according to the BBC, but the fatwa remained.

While he has lived a freer existence since Iran’s then-president Mohammad Khatami said the affair was “completely finished” in 1998, there were still many who wanted him dead.

A bounty of more than $US3 million was offered for his murder.

What is he famous for?

Rushdie is an acclaimed author, with a knighthood for services to literature and a Booker Prize under his belt.

ACT Policing said the alleged victim had stopped in the suburb of Hawker to offer assistance to a man he thought appeared to be lost about midday on Saturday, July 23.

That man allegedly then assaulted the 20-year-old, along with another two men who had been hiding nearby.

Police said that the 20-year-old was threatened with an icepick before he lost consciousness and that his shoes and wallet were stolen.

Police said the man’s account details were then used by his alleged attackers to commit credit card fraud.

When the man regained consciousness he was taken to the Canberra Hospital.

Police investigating the incident executed two search warrants yesterday, and arrested two men, who the ABC understands to be Kobi Guarini, 33, and Kalani Joliffe-Cole, 25.

Police on the hunt for man who allegedly grabbed student at Glenelg Primary School

SA Police say “significant” police resources have been deployed near a school in Adelaide’s west following an alleged incident where a student was grabbed by a man.

The incident at Glenelg Primary School was reported to police about 10am on Tuesday.

Police say a man approached a female student on the first floor of the school’s main building, grabbed her right wrist and pulled her down the stairs.

The girl was able to pull away from his grip before the man ran away.

The man is described as being about 180cm tall, bald and was wearing a knee-length light blue shirt, black pants, a black face mask and carrying a beanie.

The student told detectives the man had purple nail polish on one thumb and was wearing a distinctive black ring with bright dots.

The suspect was also wearing a black twisted bracelet on his wrist as well as two earrings on one of his ears.

Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Duval has dismissed incorrect information shared about the incident.(ABC News: Ethan Rix)

Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Duval said detectives have spoken with staff and students and viewed security footage in the vicinity, but have not found any witnesses.

“So, someone who is not meant to be there, and in this case approaching a student, is really concerning,” he said.

“We have had significant police deployment in the area around the school. The amount of deployment to this investigation is really akin to the type of seriousness we put in it.

“The involvement of the police has not wanted and will not want until we get to a point [where] we’ve exhausted all our investigation, or hopefully arrested the person responsible for this incident.”

The student was not injured during the incident.

Assistant Commissioner Duval said reports that the man was in the female toilets at the school and chased students were incorrect and “unhelpful.”

“There have been reports of this man going into the female student toilets — I can categorically say that is incorrect,” Assistant Commissioner Duval said.

“There have been other reports that this man chased the student, and again, I say that is not true.

“There were reports that other students, and perhaps staff, witnessed this incident and again I say those reports are untrue and in many respects are not helpful to this investigation.”

He urged anyone who witnessed the incident or may have seen a man matching this description in the area to contact Crime Stoppers.

Victoria’s police association calls for sentencing law reform after Warrnambool assault

The union representing Victoria Police is calling on the state government to overhaul sentencing law for serious offenses to bring punishments in line with community expectations.

The Office of Public Prosecutions yesterday announced it would not appeal against a sentence imposed last month for a man who viciously attacked two Warrnambool police officers.

Steven John Cleary, 50, was sentenced in the County Court to three years and two months in jail, with a non-parole period of one year and 10 months, for the brutal assault.

The Warrnambool man, who heard the court heard delusions including that he was the king of Australia and Norway, admitted to using a metal baseball bat to repeatedly strike an officer to the head while he was on the ground.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton had requested a submission be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting an appeal after the “inadequate” sentence.

‘Broken’ system

Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt said the case represented a “dire fault” within the legal system that needed to be addressed.

“Governments hold the responsibility of making sure the outcomes from courts, that laws the courts must consider when sentencing, actually deliver the outcomes and deliver community expectations,” he said.

“If that’s not happening, it points to a system that is broken. It points to a system that requires reform.”

A Victorian Government spokesperson said in a statement work was under way to “review and modernize” Victoria’s sentencing laws.

The spokesperson said the Attorney-General had asked the Department of Justice and Community Safety to look at the outcome of the case as part of that work.

“This work will occur in consultation with police and other emergency services in addition to victims’ groups and others,” the statement said.

Mr Gatt said it was not just an issue for police officers seriously assaulted at work, but for all victims of serious crime.

“That victim of crime could be you, it could be me, it could be anyone in our community,” he said.

“The system needs to change for all.”

Officers traumatized

Police body camera footage played to the court showed two police officers attempting to stop a 15-year-old on the street who was not wearing a mask, which was mandated at the time.

The boy contacted Cleary via walkie-talkie and he appeared moments later and rushed forward at the officers.

He continued the frenzied attack despite attempts to restrain him using a taser.

One of the victims, Senior Constable Rowan Baldam, told the court he thought he was going to die.

He said he and his colleague had considered leaving their dream job.

Defense lawyer Jonathan Barrera told the court Cleary had severe impaired mental functioning and experienced delusions, that were “active at the time of offending.”

Clearly you have served 300 days in custody since the attack, so you will be eligible for parole in a little more than a year.

No appeal lodged

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) released a statement explaining its decision not to appeal the sentence.

“In light of all the relevant sentencing considerations, there is no reasonable prosect that the Court of Appeal would consider the sentence to be manifestly inadequate,” the statement said.

“Those sentencing considerations include the application of the Verdins principles, the utilitarian value of the plea of guilty and the absence of any prior convictions.”

Clearly had pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker on duty and intentionally causing injury.

sentencing law

Sentencing is dictated by various legal principles found in the 600-page Sentencing Act and case law.

Verdins case law states mental impairment can reduce the offender’s moral culpability for the offense and affect the weight given to just punishment, denunciation and deterrence as purposes of sentencing.

It also justifies a less severe sentence where there is a serious risk of imprisonment could have a significant adverse effect on the offender’s mental health.

Judges are required to weigh up all factors including the gravity of the crime, the harm to the victims, the offender’s individual circumstances including their prior convictions and prospects of rehabilitation.

Mr Gatt said deterrence had become a “peripheral issue” when it should be a “fundamental principle” in sentencing for serious offences.

He said “any right-minded Victorian” could see Cleary’s sentence did not fit the crime, highlighting a need to change sentencing law.

“[The] advice from the OPP … represents a dire fault within our legal system, not within the OPP,” he said.

“This has to change, but it is beyond the role of the OPP to do that.

“Governments hold this responsibility.”

Woman charged with assault, five women’s soccer players banned over post-match fight outside stadium

Five players in the Northern Territory’s top women’s soccer competition have been suspended – and one charged with assault – over a post-match fight that’s been called “unacceptable” and “in contrast to the values inherent in our game” by the sport’s governing body.

NT Police has confirmed an 18-year-old player has been charged with assault in relation to the “physical altercation” involving several players on June 26, which broke out in the car park of the Darwin Football Stadium in Marrara after a game.

“A verbal dispute between two players escalated into a physical altercation when a third party intervened,” Acting Sergeant Carol Maxwell said in a statement.

“The altercation was an escalation from the match.”

There were no serious injuries.

Yesterday, Football Northern Territory announced that it had sanctioned two clubs – the Hellenic Athletic Club and Port Darwin Football Club – in relation to the same incident.

In a statement, it said five players across both clubs had been banned from participating in any of the association’s activities for various periods of time.

Those players – which include three from Hellenic and two from Port Darwin – face suspensions ranging from 12 weeks (with four weeks suspended) to three years.

Hellenic has also been stripped of nine points in the 2022 Women’s Premier League competition, and will remain subject to a good behavior bond that will, if breached, see the club lose three points for each offence.

Football Northern Territory chief executive, Bruce Stalder, said everyone involved in the game should be able to participate in a safe environment.

“This behavior will never be tolerated, it is unacceptable, unnecessary and in stark contrast to the values inherent in our game,” he said.

Mr Stalder said as part of the sanctions, the suspended players would be enrolled in a community program designed to improve personal accountability and behavioral flexibility.

The woman charged with assault is due to face court on September 19.

The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
