Hockeyroos into gold medal match against England at Commonwealth Games after controversial penalty shootout

Hockeyroos forward Rosie Malone suspects she’s public enemy number one in India right now, after the Hockeyroos penalty shootout win over India in the women’s hockey semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games.

Not that it bothers her.

Malone was the first penalty taker in the one on ones, after the teams finished at 1-1 at full time.

She was never in control of her attempt, and for the first time in her international career, she missed.

But there was an unexpected let-off when she was called back to re-take the shot, because the eight second countdown on the scoreboard hadn’t started.

“I was just thanking the universe for a second chance,” Malone said.

“I knew all of India would hate me if I put it in. But I was just trying to think about my team, and that final.

“I just said to myself, if I get a second chance, I’m not missing it.”

Malone’s successful do-over set the tone for the rest of the Australians, as they secured an easy 3-0 shootout win.

And it also characterized the difference between the revitalized 2022 Hockeyroos, and the 2021 outfit that dealt with a host of off-field issues, and lost to India in the Tokyo Olympics quarterfinals.

Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov suing Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong over financial sanctions

A Russian billionaire suing Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister claims sanctions imposed over the invasion of the Ukraine have caused him severe reputational damage.

Steel mogul Alexander Abramov launched legal action against senator Penny Wong after the former government’s April sanctioning of 67 Russian elites and oligarchs over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

His lawyer Ron Merkel QC told the Federal Court on Friday the sanctions caused severe reputational harm and the legal consequences had led to continuing financial losses.

Mr Abramov, who co-founded Russia’s largest steel producer, Evraz, wants the sanctions removed, arguing they are unique to Australia because no other country has placed similar bans on him.

“Our real point here is the approach the minister has taken is misconceived,” Mr Merkel said.

“Australia’s sanctions have also impacted Mr Abramov’s dealings in New Zealand.”

He said the case was unusual as public announcements by former foreign minister Marise Payne explaining her decision would form part of the suit.

On April 7, Senator Payne announced the government had decided to impose “targeted financial sanctions and travel bans” on 67 individuals “for their role in Russia’s unprovoked, unjust and illegal invasion of Ukraine.”

The federal government was considering an application to prevent the public release of some information in the court documents, Mr Lim said.

The matter will return before Justice Susan Kenny on August 26.

Woman charged with assault, five women’s soccer players banned over post-match fight outside stadium

Five players in the Northern Territory’s top women’s soccer competition have been suspended – and one charged with assault – over a post-match fight that’s been called “unacceptable” and “in contrast to the values inherent in our game” by the sport’s governing body.

NT Police has confirmed an 18-year-old player has been charged with assault in relation to the “physical altercation” involving several players on June 26, which broke out in the car park of the Darwin Football Stadium in Marrara after a game.

“A verbal dispute between two players escalated into a physical altercation when a third party intervened,” Acting Sergeant Carol Maxwell said in a statement.

“The altercation was an escalation from the match.”

There were no serious injuries.

Yesterday, Football Northern Territory announced that it had sanctioned two clubs – the Hellenic Athletic Club and Port Darwin Football Club – in relation to the same incident.

In a statement, it said five players across both clubs had been banned from participating in any of the association’s activities for various periods of time.

Those players – which include three from Hellenic and two from Port Darwin – face suspensions ranging from 12 weeks (with four weeks suspended) to three years.

Hellenic has also been stripped of nine points in the 2022 Women’s Premier League competition, and will remain subject to a good behavior bond that will, if breached, see the club lose three points for each offence.

Football Northern Territory chief executive, Bruce Stalder, said everyone involved in the game should be able to participate in a safe environment.

“This behavior will never be tolerated, it is unacceptable, unnecessary and in stark contrast to the values inherent in our game,” he said.

Mr Stalder said as part of the sanctions, the suspended players would be enrolled in a community program designed to improve personal accountability and behavioral flexibility.

The woman charged with assault is due to face court on September 19.

The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
