Qantas engineers to hold one-minute work stoppage

More than 700 aircraft engineers from Qantas, Jetstar and Perth-based FIFO subsidiary Network Aviation will conduct a “one-minute work stoppage” in August.

The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association (ALAEA) federal secretary Steve Purvinas told members in a meeting on Wednesday that the majority had voted in favor of industrial action.

Airline engineers are asking their employer for a 12 per cent pay rise to make up for stagnant wages the last four years.

The union’s first action will be a one-minute stoppage across all airlines sometime in late August.

“The first action will be a token one,” Mr Purvinas told members.

“A one-minute stoppage of course is not going to harm any airline and also demonstrates our willingness to negotiate in good faith and not try and harm the airline.”

Mr Purvinas said the token stoppage aimed to give the airlines an opportunity to come to the table.

“We do want to give some time for resolution of these matters before we have to do anything that may even be close to disrupting the public,” he said.

The strikes come at a difficult time for Australia’s national flag carrier, as the aviation industry struggles with staff shortages that have led to flight cancellations, delays and missing luggage.

If the stoppage does not motivate negotiations, the union plans to notify the airline of more work stoppages.

During these stoppages, the union has offered to provide “alternative labor provisions” to the airline.

“We want to assure the public that we won’t be harming their services,” Mr Purvinas said.

“Our target is the airlines who are not negotiating in good faith.”

ALAEA members voted against using overtime bans to avoid “exacerbating” already challenging conditions in the industry.

A Qantas spokesman told the NCA NewsWire in July that the 12 per cent pay rise was something the airline “simply can’t afford”.

They said Qantas had a policy of 2 per cent annual increases for all employees across the Group.

The airline has a history of not holding back when it comes to dealing with union industrial action.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce infamously grounded the airline during a dispute with the ALAEA and two other unions back in 2011, leaving 200,000 passengers stranded without notice.

Qantas was contacted for comment.

BRONCOS HOOKER IN NRL WILDERNESS

Jake Turpin is out in the cold after the Broncos confirmed he will not be at the club next season, while the Knights have denied they are interested in his services.

Newscorp reported Turpin will not be at the Broncos next season, while the Knights have denied they will make a play to lure him to the Hunter.

The Broncos are set to invest in incumbents Billy Walters and Cory Paix as well as rising rookie Blake Mozer as their dummyhalf options moving forward.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters confirmed Turpin is not in the club’s long-term plans and will not be offered a new deal in 2022.

“At the moment, there is nothing for Jake with us for next year unfortunately,” Walters told Newscorp.

“The reality is it was going to be hard to keep Jake.

“We have Billy (Walters) and Cory Paix in our squad at the moment, so as much as you would love to keep all your players, with the salary-cap it’s difficult.

“’Turps’ has played some great games for the Broncos, and he is good at those little effort areas, particularly in defense, but with our roster, we don’t have any spots left for the hooker position.”

Knights Director of Football Peter Parr poured cold water on reports Newcastle will target Turpin as a back-up to Jayden Brailey.

“He is a wholehearted player but his name hasn’t been mentioned to me at all (by recruitment manager Clint Zammit), so we have no plans to sign him” Parr said.

The 25-year-old has scored four tries in 56 games for the Broncos since his debut in 2018 and won the club’s most consistent player award just last season.

EELS STAR OPEN TO CODE SWITCH

Eels young gun Will Penisini is open to a switch to rugby union in the future as the club looks to lock him to a long-term extension.

Newscorp reported Penisini, who played the rival code at school with Roosters star Joseph Suaalii at Kings College, hasn’t shut the door on a potential move to the 15-man game in the future.

“I’m not closing the door on rugby union,” Penisini told News Corp.

“Right now, I am content with where I am at Parramatta and I’m loving rugby league at the moment. I am just at the start of my career and I want to build my game and focus on playing consistent footy for Parramatta and try not to look too far ahead about the decision between rugby league or rugby union.”

The Eels are already trying to extend Penisini beyond his current deal, which expires in 2023.

The 20-year-old center has scored seven tries in 25 games for the Eels since his debut in 2021 and has already played one Test for Tonga, who he is likely to feature for at the World Cup.

BRONCOS UP OFFER TO YOUNG GUN AS RIVALS CIRCLE

Broncos lock Kobe Hetherington is set for a massive pay rise as Brisbane aim to ward off approaches from rival clubs for his services.

Newscorp reported Hetherington is set to earn a pay rise of $200,000 a year as the club aims to lock him up on a two-year extension.

However, it is believed Hetherington, who is starting for Brisbane in the absence of the suspended Patrick Carrigan, could command upwards of $300,000 on the open market.

Hetherington is a versatile forward who can cover back row, front row and hooker, with no shortage of clubs keen on a player of his ability.

The 23-year-old has scored three tries in 33 games for the Broncos since his debut in 2021 and has been a mainstay of Kevin Walters’ pack rotation this season.

The Sharks “have got a challenge in front of them” with five stars from their backline all free to talk to rivals since November 1.

Fullback Will Kennedy, wingers Ronaldo Mulitalo and Sione Katoa as well as centers Jesse Ramien and Siosifa Talakai come off contract at the end of 2023.

That means they can field offers from rivals in just under three months time which is why news corp journalist Brent Read pointed out on Triple M that the Sharks have “a huge month coming up” if they want to lock in all five players before the November 1 feeding frenzy.

“I reckon Cronulla have got a huge month coming up,” Read said.

“I was talking to them this morning about Siosifa Talakai because they’ve been trying to re-sign him — he’s one of the November 1 guys.

“The Sharks have been talking to him ages about trying to get a new deal done, they put it off during Origin but they’ve ramped them up again.

“What makes this really interesting is that if you look at the Cronulla backline — Will Kennedy, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Jesse Ramien, Siosifa Talakai and Sione Katoa — can all sign with another club since November 1. Basically their entire backline, the club’s got about three months to tie those guys down.

“I would have thought his price has gone gangbusters since then,” he said.

Kennedy is also in line for a pay rise after claiming the Sharks’ Player of the Year honors last season, while Ronaldo Mulitalo became a Kiwi international this year and Jesse Ramien has been in red-hot form, as was Sione Katoa before his season- ending shoulder injury.

“It’s going to cost them a lot of money to keep all of those guys,” Read said.

Federal government promises to fund potential pay rise for aged care workers

The Federal Government has promised to pick up the bill for any potential pay rise for aged care workers in a submission to the Fair Work Commission (FWC).

The independent wages umpire is considering a case brought forward by the unions, calling for a 25-per-cent pay increase for 200,000 residential and home care workers.

While stopping short of nominating how much wages should rise, the Commonwealth argued in its submission that the existing award rates do not reflect the value and skills of the sector.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Tony Burke said the COVID pandemic had exacerbated pressures on the workforce and underlined the case for a pay increase.

“Right now, there is no doubt their work is undervalued. We need to change that,” he said.

“Our government is prioritizing these workers as we fight to get wages moving again.”

Unions celebrate commitment

The Health Services Union welcomed the government’s submission, arguing the aging population and changing expectations had made the roles more complex.

National president Gerard Hayes said the government’s submission was a shot in the arm for the sector.

“Older Australians will not get the care they deserve until we can attract and retain a workforce to look after them,” he said.

“The Government has understood this and taken action.

“We are hopeful the Fair Work Commission will make a decision that recognizes the work value of aged care.

“A decent pay rise is beyond overdue.”

The Interim CEO of employer group Aged and Community Care Providers Association Paul Sadler said the case for a pay rise was strongest for registered and enrolled nurses and personal care workers.

“It would not surprise me to see that the increase for these key workers will be certainly up towards that 25 per cent level,” he said.

“The sooner this decision is made the better, but we do support a staged implementation of the increase.”

An election promise

Lifting the pay of aged care workers was a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s final report last year.

During the election campaign, Labor promised if it won the government it would make a submission to the FWC in support of a pay rise for the workforce.

The commitment was criticized by then-prime minister Scott Morrison, who questioned how Labor would fund any increase, instead opting to give aged care workers across the country two standalone payments of $400.

Workforce shortages

Unions and industry groups have argued pay increases are needed to attract and retain skilled workers for the sector.

Aged Care Minister Anika Wells said a pay rise was the first step to addressing workforce shortages.

“We need more staff in aged care and a pay rise is the start of ensuring workers are rewarded for the crucial roles they play,” she said.

“One of the main causes of the gender pay gap is low pay and poor conditions in care sectors like aged care, where the majority of workers are women.

“Increasing wages in aged care is essential to ensuring that men and women are paid equally.”

If the unions’ case is successful, the FWC would vary the aged care award, the document outlining minimum pay rates and conditions for the sector.

That change could see the minimum wage for aged care workers rise by at least $5 an hour.

The minimum wage of a qualified personal carer would be bumped up from $23.09 to $28.86 an hour, dependent on salaries when the application was lodged.

Under the union’s proposal a level 1 aged care worker could see their weekly pay increased from just over $800 to more than $1,000.

The case has been before the FWC since 2020.

It is due to hear from the government and unions when it holds hearings this month.

Gold Coast-based Hard Fizz company makes $10m during Covid lockdown

A popular alcohol brand owned by a group of celebrity entrepreneurs has taken off in Queensland.

The Gold Coast-based Hard Fizz company – which launched in 2020 during the height of the Covid pandemic – was co-founded by model and entrepreneur Chloe Fisher, 30, and her husband Paul, 35, a Grammy-nominated DJ.

“When the pandemic first started, Paul and I were at home on the Gold Coast wondering what we were going to do,” Ms Fisher said.

“His gigs were cancelled, he couldn’t tour and then we were pitched the idea of ​​a seltzer company.”

Celebrities such as DJ Tigerlily, TV personality Brooke Evers, professional surfer Laura Enever and Aussie chef Hayden Quinn also front the brand, which is now stocked in more than 3000 outlets across the country, including Dan Murphy’s and BWS.

Hard Fizz has grown to be the third most popular seltzer in Australia behind White Claw and Smirnoff.

After returning from the US, the Fishers discovered a gap in the Australian market for the popular vodka-based drink.

“After spending so much time in the States, we knew how huge hard seltzer is there – it was an untapped market in Australia.” Ms Fisher said.

“People were drinking it everywhere in the states,” Mr Fisher said.

The pair, who collectively share more than 1.6 million Instagram followers, got married in 2020 before the launch of their new brewery in the Gold Coast suburb of Miami.

The business, which has amassed more than $10m in sales this year, and $7.5m in its first year, is made up of a team of 70 per cent women.

“I’m so proud to be involved in a company with such a large and strong female contingent,” Ms Fisher said.

“It’s been so amazing to see the company take shape with so many dominant females.”

Hard Fizz chief executive Wade Tiller said in the 15 years he had worked in the industry, he had never seen such a female-dominated workplace, with women taking up roles in sales management, business development, activation, trademarking and marketing.

“Working in the industry over the years, I think my colleagues were 80 per cent men,” he said.

“I think drinking habits have changed and society is slowly changing for the better.”

Employee Sophia Pearson said since joining the company she had leapt from promotion to promotion.

“I’ve been promoted twice in about seven months and they have both been from them coming to me.” she said.

“It’s honestly quite refreshing.”

Australian Distillers Association chief executive Paul McLeay told NCA NewsWire that distillers specifically still had a “long way to go” when it comes to gender equity.

“(Women in distilling) still sit at 25 per cent, so, yeah, there’s a long way to go,” he said.

“We support and encourage women into the industry and we have some extraordinary women distillers that are doing some amazing products.”

Long-term trends in alcohol consumption show Australians are drinking better-quality products, with women leading the shift in patterns.

“Gin for example has an 85 per cent female customer base,” Mr McLeay said.

Government figures show almost three times as many Australian women choose to enjoy spirits rather than beer.

Although there are no official statistics to represent how many women work in the alcohol industry, it is estimated around just 15 per cent of women accounted for all distillers.

Teacher massive shortages prompt federal government to consider pay rises for some and paying others to retrain

Dire teacher shortages have pushed the federal government to consider radical reforms to get more people to take up the profession or stay longer.

Under a plan to be tabled at an emergency meeting of federal, state and territory education ministers next week, senior teachers could get a pay rise, while professionals who want to retrain to be teachers could be paid to learn on the job.

But a pay rise would not be for everyone. So-called “master teacher” or senior teaching positions would be awarded a 40 per cent wage boost.

With more children at school than ever before but fewer people lining up to become teachers, Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said it was time for a shake up.
