Man breaks into Kalgoorlie-Boulder homes and sexually assaults three women in 2½ hours

A man forced his way into three homes in the South Kalgoorlie-Boulder area early on Monday morning and sexually assaulted a woman at each house, police have revealed.

Police on Monday said between 1am and 3.30am a male offender forced entry into three homes before sexually assaulting the female occupant, and attempted to gain entry into a fourth home.

Superintendent Steve Thompson said as a result of police inquiries they arrested a 31-year-old man shortly before 7am on Monday.

The man was in custody and assisting police with the investigation.

It wasn’t a matter of an open door, there was force used.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of these incidents, which would have been a significant and traumatic event, and they’ve been provided with a medical and support that is appropriate,” Supt Thompson said.

Supt Thompson said the victims were aged between 30 and 70, with two of the women the only occupants of the houses at the time of the attacks but there was another occupant present during the incident in the third home.

He said entry was forced to the premises at these locations.

“It wasn’t a matter of an open door, there was force used,” he said.

Supt Thompson said Kalgoorlie detectives had launched a major investigation and were supported by resources from Kalgoorlie Police Station, the District Forensic Office and the Intelligence Office.

“We’ve asked some members from our Crime Scene Unit, and also members from the Sexual Assault Squad to come in and assist with the investigation. It’s obviously a large investigation we have a number of crime scenes that need to be processed, so we’ve asked for additional support,” Supt Thompson said.

‘I wanted to dig a hole and jump in it’

“Are you going to have nightma…”

“Yup!”

The question wasn’t even fully formed and Meg Lanning had given her answer. No, she would not be sleeping well after dropping the catch that would have handed legspinner Alana King a hat-trick, just the second for her country in women’s T20Is.

In fairness, Lanning, the Australia captain, was as good-natured as anyone could possibly be about the situation, from burying her face in the Edgbaston turf right there at slip where if you gave her 99 similar chances she’d take them, to wincing in the background as reporters quizzed King a couple of meters away afterwards about the incident and then facing up to the same journalists, knowing full well what was coming.

“I’ll have nightmares,” Lanning said. “I wanted to dig a hole and jump in it as quick as I could. I tried my best and I dropped it.”

Softening the blow somewhat was the fact that Australia had one foot in the Commonwealth Games semi-finals with Barbados 53 for 8 at that point. Barbados managed just 64 before being bowled out. Then Australia, led by Lanning’s unbeaten 21-ball 36, overhauled the target with 71 balls to spare and sealed a place in the knockout stages with one group game to go.

Asked if her innings was a response to her faux pas in the field, Lanning said: “I wasn’t overly pleased, let’s put it that way. I was just disappointed for Kingy. She was bowling so well and to let her down like that was not ideal. But that’s cricket, I guess.

“I was just keen to contribute really. I was just pouncing on some loose balls when I got them and giving myself a chance and it felt like I was able to do that.”

Deandra Dottin conceded 25 runs off her first over, the last of the powerplay, all to Lanning and extras as Australia, via their captain, accelerated after a watchful start on a slow, hybrid pitch staging its sixth match in three days. From that point, Alyssa Healy joined the fray also, moving from four runs off 14 balls to 23 not out off 24 as Australia eased to victory.

For her part, King was understanding.

“That’s cricket, right? No one means to drop a ball or anything,” King said. “It’s just the way the game goes, but I’m just happy that I could contribute in any way I can.

“Every ball I bowl, I’m trying to get a wicket so that was no different but it caught the outside edge and yeah, that’s just cricket, I guess. But I’m just really happy with how I played today.

“I felt that there was definitely a bit more bite in the wicket today. It is the sixth game on it so it’s a bit tired, a bit slow, which works into our hands a little bit.”

King entered the attack in the eighth over after Lanning had won the toss and sent in Barbados, who lost captain Hayley Matthews early for what turned out to be their top score, on 18.

King struck with her second ball, brushing the outside of Dottin’s front pad in line with middle stump as she knelt down to tuck the ball to fine leg, having faced 22 balls for her eight runs.

After Tahlia McGrath claimed the first of her three wickets when she had Kycia Knight caught by Megan Schutt at deep backward square and Ashleigh Gardner bowled a tight spell, including a double-wicket maiden to remove Kyshona Knight and Trishnan Holder, King roared back into action .

At the end of her second over, King dismissed Aaliyah Alleyne playing across a ball that pegged back leg stump. Then, with the third ball of her third over, King pinned Shakera Selman lbw and then struck Shamilia Connell on the back leg next ball. What followed as Keila Elliott’s edge somehow popped out of Lanning’s hands at first slip was the stuff of bad dreams. Fortunately for Australia, it was all right on the night.

Putin dubs US as Russia’s main naval threat in new doctrine

Russian President Vladimir Putin identified the US as his nation’s greatest naval threat in a new military doctrine issued Sunday.

Speaking on his country’s Navy Day in St. Petersburg, Putin said Russia wants to fortify its influence on the seas and to become a “great maritime power.”

Earlier, Putin signed a 55-page naval doctrine outlining Russia’s designs.

The document pinpoints America as Russia’s primary naval rival due “the strategic policy of the USA to dominate the world’s oceans.”

He also asserted that looming NATO expansion poses another threat on the high seas.

Putin stated that Russia would deploy military force if diplomacy and economic tactics don’t prove effective in containing America’s might.

US officials have asserted that Putin and Russia are attempting to militarize international waters as it seeks to bolster its military standing.

The doctrine stressed the importance of the Arctic Ocean and said Russia will seek to deepen its position in the Black and Azov seas.

“Guided by this doctrine, the Russian Federation will firmly and resolutely defend its national interests in the world’s oceans, and having sufficient maritime power will guarantee their security and protection,” the document said.

Putin noted that Russia expects imminent delivery of new hypersonic missiles that travel at nine times the speed of sound.

He did not touch on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine in his comments.

Your pint of beer could soon set you back $15, thanks to the latest tax hike

Australians face a big rise in the cost of a pint, with the country’s beer tax recording its biggest increase in more than 30 years.

As of Monday August 1, the beer tax goes up to 4 per cent, adding about 80-84 cents to the cost of a pint of the much-loved amber liquid. This means you may soon be paying $15 for your favorite glass.

And there’s no escape for those who buy their beer by the slab. The beer tax will rise from $53.59 to $55.73 per liter of the beverage’s alcohol content, raising the tax on a carton about 80c, to $18.80.

The tax on a keg will jump about $4, raising the cost to almost $74.

Because of this price hike, Brewers Association of Australia chief executive John Preston warned that patrons might now have to fork out $15 for a pint at their local pub or bar.

“For a small pub, club or other venue the latest tax hike will mean an increase of more than $2700 a year in their tax bill – at a time when they are still struggling to deal with the ongoing impacts of the pandemic,” he said .

The biannual alcohol excise is based upon the consumer price index (CPI), which is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by households for a fixed number of goods and services.

According to the ABS, the June CPI increased by 6.1 per cent over the last 12 months, with goods accounting for 79 per cent of the rise this quarter.

Publican of the Royal Albert Hotel in Sydney’s Surry Hills, Michael Bain, said that while the increase was certainly high, beer tax increased twice a year every year (in February and August), meaning the issue isn’t a particularly new one.

“These price rises … just keep affecting us all the time,” he said.

“Because of COVID, I think a lot of people didn’t put the excise on…so I think this is why it’s affected us more this time.

“Especially some of the craft brewers that we use, they’ve been absorbing those CPI increases. But even the small guys now are going to have to pass it on, so it will mean a price rise across the board for us.”

Preston said the industry had seen “almost 20 increases in Australia’s beer tax over the past decade alone”.

“Australians are taxed on beer more than almost any other nation,” he said.

If patrons are forced to pay $15 for a pint of beer, Bain said he believes people will still buy it, but may buy fewer beers.

“Instead of buying three beers, they’ll buy two. I think they really will buy one less,” he said.

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers. Credit: AAP

According to Preston, breweries and pub and club operators were “extremely disappointed” when the former government did not deliver its proposed beer tax reduction in this year’s budget, and that the new Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, has now “inherited” the Liberals’ problem .

“We believe there is a strong case for beer tax relief to be provided by the new federal government, with the hidden beer tax to go up again in February 2023,” he said.

Bain agrees, saying another possible solution could be cutting down the tax from twice a year to once a year.

“I’m not saying they shouldn’t do it and we need to pay taxes for health care and all that kind of stuff, but at what point do you just keep gouging everyone?

“You can’t keep incrementally adding on all the time at these massive rates

“(It’s) kinda like you’re absolutely smashing people with tax.”

Chalmers was contacted for comment.

Seven-year-old boy dead as investigation launched into alleged criminal neglect

The death of a seven-year-old in South Australia is being investigated as a case of possible criminal neglect.

SA Police detective superintendent Des Bray said Craigmore boy Makai was taken to Lyell McEwin Hospital “very sick” on February 10 and was then transferred to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where he died later that day.

Task Force Prime, which was set up after the death of six-year-old Charlie, is now investigating whether the boy’s death was a case of criminal neglect.

Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >>

Investigators are also examining the care of his five siblings, aged between seven and 16.

Bray said a post-mortem examination following Makai’s death revealed several serious health issues.

He said the provisional cause of death was unusual, but was not a cause for immediate concern.

“The cause of death in itself wasn’t enough to raise concern because it was a serious, recognized health issue,” Bray said, adding that a coronial investigation was launched following the death.

About 10 days after Makai’s death, a coronial direction obtained information from “various child protection authorities”, which was then passed on to SA Police in July.

“Soon after, investigators began reviewing volumes of material and obtained an opinion from a pediatric expert,” he said.

“They formed the view that sufficient grounds existed to commence a criminal investigation of criminal neglect causing death.”

Bray said an interim cause of death had been determined but declined to comment further.

Investigators will determine whether anyone was guilty for Makai’s death or the neglect of the other siblings, Bray said.

Makai and his siblings had been staying in their father’s care since November 2020. Their mother was not living with him at the time of his death.

“There is neglect and abuse which we believe has occurred over a period of time but it doesn’t have all the same characteristics of Charlie’s,” Bray said.

Charlie was found unresponsive in her family home in Munno Para on July 15 and died in Lyell McEwin Hospital, sparking a police investigation into suspected neglect.

searching for answers

Following Charlie’s death, the state government ordered a review of the interactions between government agencies and the family in recent years.

Premier Peter Malinauskas on Monday announced a new wholly independent review would now investigate these interactions for both families.

“The death of any child is something that breaks all of our hearts, particularly parents across the state,” he told reporters.

“One was shocking, two is desperately heartbreaking.

“There is absolutely merit given the elevation of this for a wholly independent led review.”

Premier Peter Malinauskas said a new wholly independent review would now investigate the interactions between government agencies and the families. Credit: AAP

Malinauskas said he was “not wasting any time” and had appointed former SA police commissioner Mal Hyde to lead the review as “someone every South Australian has complete confidence in”.

“This is about making sure we have a review of integrity, of independence and robustness so we fully understand exactly what interactions occurred between government agencies and these families and to see whether or not there were any failures of systems that could be addressed,” he said.

“Two innocent children losing their lives potentially because of criminal neglect is beyond sad. But we know about it and we have to respond.”

Malinauskas said the findings of the review would be made public.

Bray said criminal neglect occurred when a person with a duty of care to a child failed to take all reasonable steps to protect them from harm, and a child is harmed or dies as a result of that neglect.

It carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.

Witnesses recount coming to rescue of Apple River tubing stabbing victims

Some of the people who came to the rescue of five people stabbed while tubing down Apple River in Wisconsin recounted the terrifying moments as they encountered the wounded victims.

The Saturday afternoon stabbing attack in Somerset, Wisconsin claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy from Stillwater and left four others hurt. A 52-year-old man from Prior Lake, Minnesota is now being held in St. Croix County Jail for the attack.

Mark Olson and his family were part of a chaotic scene on the water in Somerset.

“All we heard was ‘call 911 call 911,'” said Mark Olson.

“It was just scary because we didn’t know where that person was or what he was doing,” said Spencer Olson.

Olson and his group were just a few minutes away from the attack. They came upon the victims on the shoreline, surrounded by 15 to 20 people trying to help them.

“Scrambling and then there are these kids that were with the one that passed away like ‘how could this happen, how could this happen’ and it was just very traumatic, very traumatic,” explained Mark.

The four victims that survived are now at Regions Hospital with a number of stab wounds throughout the torso and chest.

“The first one they were giving CPR to then the next one they were just telling him it’s going to be okay it’s going to be okay,” said Kat Fenton, another witness.

Off the water, Kat Fenton says she helped the father of one of the victims who came speeding towards her home nearby.

“I saw blood on his shirt and he was crying,” said Fenton. “I got in and I touched his arm and I just said I’ll get you through this I’ll show you where you need to go.”

An hour later, at the end of the River Run, Mark Olson’s family watched the arrest of this 52-year-old suspect.

“All of a sudden they took his hat off and then they hauled him away and he was calm as can be with his wife there,” added Mark.

Former Putin advisor Anatoly Chubais suddenly sick from rare neurological disorder

A former high-ranking advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin — who fled the country after the invasion of Ukraine — has fallen seriously ill and was in intensive care Sunday, a report said.

Anatoly Chubais was suffering from a neurological disorder at a European hospital, according to Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian television personality and friend of Chubais.

Sobchak, on Telegram, spoke with Chubais’ wife and was told he was suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Guillain-Barre occurs when a person’s immune system harms the body’s nerves, which can lead to muscle weakness and even paralysis.

Chubais, 67, had grown numb in his hands and legs. Specialists in “chemical protection suits” probed the room where he suddenly got sick, according to the New York Times.

Chubais did not explain why he stepped down from his post in March, though the assumption is it was due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. His high-profile resignation was one of many following the start of the war.

He most recently was part of Putin’s envoy to international organizations on sustainable development and is well-known in the country after holding many top-level posts since the early 1990s.

His illness raises suspicion considering other Kremlin opponents have mysteriously and suddenly gotten sick in the past, most famously Alexei Navalny, who was apparently poisoned in 2020.

Mizkif reveals that his Discord server with more than 55,000 members was hacked

Twitch star Matthew “Mizkif” shared the harrowing news that his Discord server with more than 55,000 members was hacked recently, which led to thousands of fans’ accounts getting compromised.

The streamer uploaded a 12-minute video on YouTube titled i got hacked. In the video, I explained the matter in-depth and requested that his fans of him on the Discord server immediately reset their passwords and credentials to secure their accounts.

AFTER 2 WEEKS OF HELL MY YOUTUBE IS FINALLY BACK! NEW VIDEO IS OUT NOW AND SHOILD BE GOOD FROM NOW ON 👍LIKE/RETWEET TO SPREAD AWARENESS 😊 I Got Hacked.youtu.be/V31emWOUyAs

Mizkif explains how his Discord server was hacked

youtube-cover

The streaming sensation revealed that he received an urgent call from his manager Nick “syn4ack” stating that “something terrible” had happened. Nick told him that Twitch content creator Lacari’s Discord account had been hacked.

Matthew mentioned that Lacari owned the entire Discord server and had administrative privileges:

“So Lacari had Mizkif role, which means he could do absolutely everything, and he was ahead of all the admins, and I never thought Lacari of all people would possibly ruin my entire career.”

One True King’s co-founder spoke about what the hacker ended up doing to his Discord server and added:

“A few hours before I wake up, the person who hacked Lacari’s account starts to go on my Discord and starts changing a bunch of roles around, and my mods were kind of suspicious. They were thinking Lacari’s maybe drunk. They were thinking that someone was messing with it, some friend of his, and he (the hacker) adds a bot!”

Matthew said that the bot spammed hundreds of messages about another Discord server:

“The admin gives this bot full admin privilege and basically says, ‘You can do whatever the f**k you want. You control the entire server.’ That bot unleashed on my server and spammed hundreds and hundreds of times, letting everyone know about a new server that you can join called Night Bar, which got 1,000 additional people in it once they spammed it in my Discord.”

The hacker on the other server known as Night Bar claimed that they had partnered with Mizkif and would be gifting Discord Nitro Classic subscriptions to their members upon reaching more than 55,000 members.

The Austin, Texas native pleaded with his fans to change their password if they had clicked on the malicious link, since the link apparently stole a unique Discord token from any account that clicked on it.

To resolve the issue, Mizkif’s manager told him to ban Lacari from the Discord server and continued the conversation further and said:

“And I was like, I got to ban Lacari. Boom, banned the guy. Next, I banned the bot, and we were able to fix the server. I’ve been non-stop trying to call Lacari at this point because Syn4ack’s like, “Dude, please get him on the phone. He needs to change his password immediately.” Because if your token gets taken, you essentially need to change your password to reset the token.”

In the end, Mizkif was able to get in touch with Lacari and told him to change his password immediately. Lacari then changed his password from him, and everything went back to normal as the Discord server was reset by the moderators.

Fans react to streamer’s Discord server getting hacked

More than 850 fans were present in the YouTube comment section, with several viewers praising the streamer for addressing and resolving the matter. Here is a snippet of some fan reactions:

Schoolboy Robbie Hunt goes viral singing Top Gun: Maverick song with 23 million views on TikTok

Private schoolboy goes viral with stunning verse of Top Gun: Maverick song on TikTok – with almost as many viewers as the population of Australia

  • Robbie Hunt, 18, has gone viral after singing the first verse of ‘Great Balls of Fire’
  • The St Joseph’s College student said the new-found fame was ‘pretty crazy’
  • The clip, shared on his TikTok account, amassed a whopping 23 million views

A Sydney schoolboy has gone viral for an electrifying 13-second performance of a 1950s rock-and-roll hit he heard for the first time while watching Top Gun: Maverick.

Robbie Hunt, who attends St Joseph’s College at Hunters Hill, belted out a rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis’ 1957 hit ‘Great Balls of Fire’ in one of the school’s music rooms.

The TikTok clip has amassed a whopping 23 million views and shows the 18-year-old wearing his school uniform and playing piano while singing the first verse of the Jerry Lee Lewis classic.

Mr Hunt admitted to 2GB host Ben Fordham on Monday that he had never heard the song but was inspired to learn it after watching the Top Gun sequel.

‘I heard the song a couple times and I wanted to learn it but never really took the time to do it,’ Mr Hunt said.

‘I sat down and heard the song and started kind of playing around and I thought, “oh, there it is”.’

Hunt said he did not think the video would receive so much attention and that his new-found fame was ‘pretty crazy’.

‘I just posted it and went to bed,’ Hunt said.

‘When I woke up and my phone kept vibrating, I was like, “that’s very annoying at this time in the morning” and then I went and looked at it.

‘I was like, “Oh, it’s over 500,000 [views]oh that’s a huge number.”

He then went to class and came back to one million views – which has since soared.

Ben Fordham described Hunt as ‘looking like a movie star’ and social media users agree, with some even asking for his hand in marriage.

‘Holy moly, hot and can sing’, one user wrote.

‘He’s Australian OMG I am too, I want you [for real],’ another user wrote.

A third user chimed: ‘So are you single or what?’

‘Who is this kid and when can I marry him,’ another user commented.

Hunt, who has been singing for ‘nearly [his] whole life’ and playing piano since ‘early primary school’, said he wants to pursue music after school and is focused on doing well in his exams.

Hunt noted his family and friends love how the video has gone viral with some calling it ‘hilarious’. However, his grandparents have warned him not to ‘get a big head’ and let the attention distract him from his HSC trials.

‘Obviously music and that stuff is what I want to do with my life but I think the way I can give back is to put my head down and go well in school and sport,’ Hunt said.

The teen is in the midst of preparing for his HSC trials and has already been accepted into the prestigious JMC Arts Academy.
