Coles shopper reveals best time to get discounted meat, bread

With cost of living out of control, every shopper is trying to cut their costs as grocery prices climb higher.

But one Coles shopper from Wodonga, Victoria has revealed the exact time she goes to the supermarket to make massive savings, providing the results with a $10 haul valued at more than $200.

The woman went to her local store at 8pm two nights in a row to test her theory and shared the results on popular Facebook group Markdown Addicts Australia.

On the first night she purchased $215.11 worth of products but spent just $10.92, with the haul including chicken thighs, two lots of prosciutto wrapped chicken, Nature’s Kitchen spaghetti bolognaise, lamb chops and sweet treats.

The woman went back the next day and spent $3.95 on $75.60 worth of groceries.

This haul included bread, red velvet cupcakes and plant-based burger patties.

“After last night I wanted to see if I could back it up! Seems our store has decided 8pm is the time to start marking down,” she said.

“Only stayed for bakery and meat, there was three of us getting meat so I just took the sausages and let the others go but there was about 10 different items. Had to leave after meat but they seem to do bakery, then meat, (before marking down) the dairy fridges and around in a circle.”

Social media users were keen to share their own experiences.

“That’s the kind of price I see too in my Adelaide stores, even just before shop shuts,” one social media user said.

Another added: “I’m jealous as I never get goodies like this but I’m also super happy for you!”

A Coles spokesperson said items are regularly discounted to avoid waste.

“We know our customers love good value so when a product is near it’s Best Before date we often mark it down so it can be enjoyed for a cheaper price, instead of being wasted,” the spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Markdowns do not uniformly take place at the same time across all stores.

“There are many things that can impact when this takes place including stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering.”

WhatsApp privacy updates: Silently leave group chats, appear offline, screenshot blocking

WhatsApp users will soon be able to “silently” slip out of group chats without everyone making a “big deal” out of it.

The update, which will start to roll out this month, is one of several new privacy features for the popular messaging app announced by parent company Meta on Tuesday.

Currently, leaving a group chat can be slightly awkward as everyone receives a notification.

“We love our group chats but some are not forever,” Meta said in a blog post.

“We’re making it possible to exit a group privately without making it a big deal to everyone. Now, instead of notifying the full group when you are leaving, only the admins will be notified.”

In another change rolling out this month, users will be able to choose who can see when they are online.

“Seeing when friends or family are online helps us feel connected to one another, but we’ve all had times when we wanted to check our WhatsApp privately,” Meta said.

“For the moments you want to keep your online presence private, we’re introducing the ability to select who can and can’t see when you’re online.”

A third new feature coming soon will allow screenshot blocking for “View Once” disappearing messages.

“View Once is already an incredibly popular way to share photos or media that don’t need to have a permanent digital record,” Meta said.

“Now we’re enabling screenshot blocking for View Once messages for an added layer of protection. We’re testing this feature now and are excited to roll it out to users soon.”

The updates build on WhatsApp’s existing privacy features including default end-to-end encryption for calls and messages, encrypted backups for chat history, two-step verification and the ability to block and report unwanted chats.

“We’ll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations,” Meta founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.

Ami Vora, head of product at WhatsApp, said in a statement the company was “focused on building product features that empower people to have more control and privacy over their messages”.

“Over the years, we’ve added interlocking layers of protection to help keep their conversations secure, and the new features are one way we continue to deliver on our commitment to keep messages private,” he said.

It comes as Meta makes a series of changes to Facebook and Instagram in order to win over younger users increasingly abandoning its platforms for Chinese rival TikTok.

Facebook recently launched a new “Feeds” feature allowing users to see the latest posts from their family and friends, separate to the main “Home” news feed which delivers content based on a recommendation algorithm.

“One of the most requested features for Facebook is to make sure people don’t miss friends’ posts,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “So today we’re launching a Feeds tab where you can see posts from your friends, groups, Pages and more, separately in chronological order.”

More recently, Instagram was forced to roll back a series of controversial changes that boosted the appearance of recommended video content in news feeds, after backlash from high-profile users including Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner who accused the platform of “trying to be TikTok” .

Amid mounting criticism, Meta said last month it would be reducing the number of recommended posts and videos from accounts users don’t follow that they see in their feeds, as it works to improve its personalization algorithms.

“I’m glad we took a risk. If we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri told TheVerge.

“But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup. [When] we’ve learned a lot, then we come back with some sort of new idea or iteration. So we’re going to work through that.”

Meta last month posted its first ever quarterly revenue decline, following a privacy change from Apple allowing iOS users to opt out of data tracking, and growing competition from TikTok.

Revenue was down 1 per cent to $US28.8 billion ($A41.4 billion), while profit fell 36 per cent to $US6.6 billion ($A9.5 billion).

Shoppers who have active, young kids to keep busy are excited over a new outdoor range from Kmart that features a climbing ramp and slide.

A photo series shared by blogger Oh So Busy Mum to Facebook showed mud kitchen, a climbing ramp and slide and hopscotch mat.

“Wow! Kmart Australia have some fantastic outdoor play items at the moment,” the photos were captioned.

The giant hopscotch mat retails for $16, while a wooden climbing frame sells for $39, an adjustable basketball hoop is going for $59 and 4 balance beams also sold for $16.

Parents were extremely excited about the range and what it would mean for their children.

One social media user commented: “My son has Autism Spectrum Disorder and we have spent a fortune on therapy equipment over the years.

“Most of these items are just as good and for such a better price.”

Another said: Go Kmart! It’s so good to see that they have more things to encourage kids to be and playing inside and outside instead of being still and sitting around playing video games/iPads/watching TV.”

Another added: “They have some great things. Now if it’d just stop raining long enough to dry out the backyard to be able to play outside.”

One eager shopper revealed they had already gotten their hands on some of the outdoor equipment.

The social media user said: “Have a heap of the outdoor equipment already put away for Xmas.

“Found a lot on sale in June so grabbed some. Lucky have room in the shed.”

The buzz around the range is growing, with Kmart announcing it has plans to expand the range.

A Kmart spokeswoman told news.com.au: “Over recent years, our Kmart outdoor range has continued to grow in popularity and we are currently expanding these ranges.

“In particular, we have seen huge demand for our kids development, soft play and wooden development products and we have a number of new exciting products in these ranges coming soon both in stores and online.”

Hairdresser reveals sick ‘happy ending’ texts

An Asian-Australian hairdresser has posted what she claims is one of hundreds of text messages from male clients asking her to perform sex acts on them.

Amy Tran, who owns the Walk In Barber Shop in Geraldton, Western Australia, said she’s fed up with customers who assume “Asians are mostly prostitutes”.

Since opening her shop two years ago, Ms Tran said she has been asked to provide lewd services such as “happy endings” almost every day so she’s decided to start publicly shaming those who overstep the mark.

“Enough is enough,” she told Daily Mail Australia.

“I can’t take it anymore.”

The hairdresser of 15 years posted screenshots of a text exchange with a male customer to the Facebook page “Geraldton Neighborhood Watch” in an apparent bid to detect others.

“I would like to book in for a shave and trim with a happy ending please text me a time and cash amount,” the man’s first message reads.

“What happy ending are you asking about?” Ms Tran replied, to which the customer responded: “Just nice rub to unload please!”

Ms Tran told the man: ‘I don’t do a happy ending! You have to stop this, ”and she threatened to report him to local police.

In her post, Ms Tran pleaded with others not to mistake her hairdressing services with those of a sex worker.

“I am often looked down upon by others because I am Asian,” she wrote.

“Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

“I believe there are many other women who have the same problem as me but the difference is that they don’t dare say to say it because they are shy or don’t want people to judge them.”

Ms Tran also included the man’s personal phone number.

“If anyone is a relative of the person with the phone number below I hope they will find out the true face of the husband and father they are living with,” she wrote.

She ended the post by saying she hoped others wouldn’t do things that “affect the work psychology, joy or vitality” of others.

“I am just a barber. Please respect. Barber only,” Ms Tran added.

Many residents of the mining town were quick to come to her defense with dozens of Facebook users condemning the “disgraceful” request.

“That is disgusting and no one should have to be subjected to such disgraceful and disrespectful behaviour,” one woman wrote.

One man slammed the customer as a “sad individual” and encouraged Ms Tran to “rise above” and leave it “along with the person who felt it in the gutter”.

“So sorry you have to deal with this revolting creep and others like him,” another wrote.

“Hold your head high and good on you for posting this sicko’s number.”

One woman said she had received the same request midway though a haircut and urged her fellow hairdresser to “stay safe”.

Grease star Eddie Deezen committed to health facility after burglary, assault charges

Grease star Eddie Deezen has been branded a danger to society and been put in the care of health officials as his sad spiral continues.

Deezen, 65, was on Monday found incompetent after allegedly burglarizing a nursing home in April.

A commitment order obtained by TMZ deemed the actor who played Rydell High nerd Eugene Felsnic in the iconic film is unable to stand trial because of an unspecified mental disorder.

He has been transferred to the Maryland Department of Health for treatment.

The document reportedly states that the actor, who played Felsnic in the 1978 movie musical and its 1982 sequel, poses a “danger to himself and others around him.” He will stay in the health department’s care until the court believes he is no longer a threat.

Deezen was arrested in Maryland on April 9 for burglary, two counts of trespassing and disturbing the peace, his inmate record, seen by Page Six, showed at the time.

However, prosecutors reportedly changed the charges to assault and disorderly conduct.

Police alleged to TMZ that Deezen had forced his way into a privately owned nursing facility and refused to leave. He also allegedly tried to break into a patient’s room before being kicked out and arrested on the property.

Deezen was previously arrested in September 2021 at a Maryland restaurant after allegedly throwing plates and food at police officers.

He was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing for that rampage.

Before that, Deezen found himself involved in another incident at an eatery where he was accused of harassing a waitress after detailing his infatuation with her via Facebook.

“Eddie Deezen is af***ing CREEP who comes into my work at least once a week, calls and asks other servers for my schedule, and if he comes in and I’m not wearing makeup HE LEAVES,” the waitress, Kara Lashbaugh, wrote on Twitter in June 2021 with screenshots of Deezen’s all-caps posts about her. “And this grown-ass old man has the balls to post this on Facebook about me I’m losing my mind.”

Deezen played several other nerd character roles in a handful of films in the late 1970s and early 1980s before launching a successful second phase of his career as a voice actor.

His notable characters include the Know-It-All Kid in The Polar Express, Snipes the Magpie in Rock-a-Doodle and Ned in Kim Possible.

Bali travel: New photos show heartbreaking sight in Kuta

New photographs taken by an Australian traveler show a heartbreaking sight in Bali.

While more tourists are returning to the party island since international travel resumed, and businesses are reopening, things are still not quite the same at the famous tourist hub of Kuta as they were before the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

But despite this, there are still some parts of the resort area that remain a ghost town, with some of the pubs, shops and restaurants that were once major tourist drawcards still closed.

This can be seen in images of the once-popular Kuta Town Houses and its surrounds, which now appear to be an abandoned site, boarded up and overgrown with weeds.

Traveler Kat Willeme told news.com.au that on a recent visit she had gone for a morning walk to check out the area and was surprised by what she found.

“What an absolute heartbreaking sight to see things in such disrepair and all the surrounding businesses shut down,” Kat said.

“The area used to be so lively and was the main thoroughfare between Poppies Lane 1 and 2. We are understanding now why they are both struggling to recover.”

However, she said it’s crucial for tourists to keep coming back to support Bali as “they need our help”.

She explained that most of her friends have businesses in the area which were still struggling to recover, unlike other parts of Bali which were thriving. She hopes to raise awareness of what’s really going on in Kuta, in the hopes of bringing life back to the area.

“It is not like this everywhere,” she said.

Kat also posted the images in a Facebook travel group and it was flooded with comments, many reminiscing about the past and devastated to see the state of the building now.

One commenter said: “So sad – this was such an awesome place.”

Another said: “This is a crying shame. We are so lucky in this country. Good buildings going to waste, only increased tourism can remedy this. Please help by visiting Bali.”

And a third wrote: “Yes it’s so sad! We were there recently and it was a sight to see. Just want it back to the way it used to be.”

Another commenter shared some fond memories: “It’s so sad. We stayed there since they opened and they were like family … It’s the worst to see it all so overgrown.”

Others pointed out that with the boards removed, and some weeding and general maintenance work done, the building would look much better.

Closed for business

Kat also shared other images from the streets of Kuta showing businesses that are shut. They include places such as the Matahari Shopping Center on Kuta Square, and other eleven-busy shops nearby.

She said there were many shops still shut along the formerly bustling Poppies Lane 1.

Meanwhile, most shops are open for business along Poppies Lane 2, but due to some local hotels being shut Kat said she noticed “there is a lack of foot traffic getting down there”.

She also said popular businesses such as Tubes and Bagus Pub are shut, along with the famous Bounty Hotel which Kat said “is still all boarded up and looking a little shabby”.

But there is hope that things will slowly improve.

A local advised her the Bounty is hoping to reopen in September after doing some renovations.

“You can see them doing work and repairs everywhere you go and more and more stores and hotels are reopening each day,” Kat said.

tourism revival

The Covid-19 pandemic caused international travelers to disappear from the island nation, leaving 400,000 Balinese people without jobs.

In April this year, Indonesia’s Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno asked Australians to return, as the nation “misses” us.

“We want you guys to be back,” he told 9news.

“We are seeing demand, very healthy demand from Australia in particular. Bali is now open.”

Inner West major to look into stadium safety after Leichhardt Oval grandstand crash

A Sydney Mayor who has lashed out at Dominic Perrottet for alleged rugby stadium “pork barreling” has reacted with shock after a grandstand collapsed at the weekend.

A disturbing video shows the moment a railing at a Leichhardt Oval grandstand collapsed under the weight of fans attending a schoolboy rugby match.

A number of fans went tumbling over the stand like dominoes and face planted onto concrete meters below.

Paramedic crews at the game treated some minor injuries but no one was taken to hospital, NSW Ambulance reported.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne, who has campaigned for funding to upgrade the Leichhardt Oval, issued a media release just days before the collapse, accusing the state government of pork barreling for choosing to spend upwards of $300 million to build Penrith Stadium despite numerous commitments to fund suburban sports grounds.

“Dominic Perrottet is happy to spend $300 million in Stuart Ayres seat, to build a shiny, new Panthers Stadium for the exclusive use of one club,” Mr Byrne said, referring to the outgoing trade minister and MP for Penrith.

“But the Wests Tigers, and all of the other senior and junior, men’s and women’s Rugby League, Soccer and Rugby Union teams who regularly use Leichhardt Oval get nothing.”

The Council had plans to use part of a planned $250m slated for suburban sports grounds to upgrade and expand their grandstands.

“I call on Mr Perrottet to explain why this shocking pork-barrelling continues while most footy fans across Sydney get dudded,” the Labor mayor said.

Leichhardt Oval hosts more than 50 games a year across various rugby codes while Penrith Stadium will host just 11 Penrith Panthers games a year.

Mr Byrne took to his social media following the grandstand collapse to share his shock over the dangerous incident.

“The collapse of grandstand seating at Leichhardt Oval today during a schoolboy rugby match was incredibly dangerous,’ he said.

“The footage is shocking.”

Inner West councilor Philippa Scott jumped into the comment section to direct her anger at the state government.

“I am heartened to know that the spectators were sent home with only minor injuries, however I am incandescently angry at how our inner west infrastructure is treated by the state government,” she said.

We are being smashed by not being a marginal Liberal seat.”

Mayor Byrne said his team are working to make the site safe and will fully investigate the safety risks it raises.

Australia Rugby League boss Peter V’landys this week accused Premier Dominic Perrottet of reneging on his agreement after he redirected funds set aside for sports grounds to flood recovery.

Premier Dominic Perrottet has denied backflipping on his deal to upgrade Brookvale Oval, Leichhardt Oval and Shark Park.

“We won’t give up. We’re going to make sure the fans will get the facilities,” Mr V’Landys told 2GB radio this week.

A tense 24 hours of negotiations on Tuesday night had the ARL boss and the government tussling over whether the grand final would be moved from Sydney to Queensland.

Mr V’landys said in a radio interview at the weekend negotiations were ongoing and that a decision on the grand final would be made on Monday.

“We’re still negotiating with the NSW government, we don’t accept the excuse they’ve given us,” he said.

“The (ARL) commission will meet on Monday to decide the strategy it’s going to use … we don’t want to punish the NSW fans because the government isn’t meeting its commitments.”

Football news 2022: Mohamed Buya Turay misses wedding, brother steps in

A footballer missed his own wedding day in order to report to a new team.

Mohamed Buya Turay wasn’t there on his big day as he was agreeing to a different type of contract instead, The Sun reports.

The Sierra Leone international signed for Swedish side Malmo this summer after a spell in China.

And Malmo were so keen for the 27-year-old to link up with the squad as soon as possible they made him miss his own wedding.

Although Turay made sure bride Suad Baydoun wasn’t on her own – by sending his brother to take his place instead.

The forward was unveiled as a Malmo player on July 22, with Turay’s wedding taking place a day earlier, minus the groom.

Luckily the happy couple had cleverly taken wedding photos before the star was forced to jet to Sweden.

Turay hilariously told Swedish outlet Afton Bladet: “We got married on July 21 in Sierra Leone.

“But I wasn’t there because Malmo asked me to come here earlier.

“We took the pictures in advance. So it looks like I was there but I wasn’t. My brother had to represent me at the wedding itself.”

Turay admitted that he still hasn’t been reunited with his now wife.

He continued: “I will try to get her to Sweden and Malmo now so she can be close to me. She will live here with me.”

The forward is now hoping he will be around to make it on the plane for his honeymoon.

But he is eyeing a league title triumph beforehand.

Turay concluded: “First we have to win the league and then I go on my honeymoon.”

The forward made his Malmo debut in the Europa League qualifying stages in midweek.

Cost of living crisis: Sydneysiders rush to eastern suburbs petrol station while fuel prices are cheap

Australia’s cost of living crisis has been laid bare after Sydney residents rushed to a local petrol station upon hearing that prices were much lower than normal.

By the time most arrived, however, the price had fluctuated and was back to a more expensive level.

On Saturday morning, just past 9am, a thoughtful resident spotted that petrol prices were unusually cheap at a service station in Randwick, in Sydney’s east.

She took a quick snap and shared it a local community group, prefacing the image with “Cheap petrol Clovelly Rd.

“I don’t drive but plenty of cars buying.”

It was as low as 115.8 and 129 cents per liter (unleaded and premium unleaded respectively) but just an hour later, the prices had jumped to 161 and 175 cents per liter.

The original poster promised to notify her community if she spotted low prices again.

The current average price for regular unleaded fuel in Sydney is at 169.1 cents per liter, according to the NRMA’s weekly fuel report.

It comes as Australia has been caught in the throes of a cost of living crisis as inflation, rising interest rates and supply chain issues have made it harder to get ahead financially.

In the last quarter, transport costs rose 13.1 per cent as the price of fuel rose to record levels for the fourth quarter in a row.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has previously said he would not extend the 50 per cent fuel excise cut, due to expire September 28, due to the cost to the budget bottom line.

To extend it for another six months would cost the government $3 billion.

Last month, data found that Australians were spending nearly three-quarters more on petroleum each month than they were less than a year ago.

In June, the average monthly spend on petroleum in Australia was $192.63, an increase of $82.05 (74.19 per cent) from September 2021.

These heavy prices have made Australians become more strategic and considered with their driving habits, with more than 60 per cent now shopping around for cheaper fuel.
