Matt Smith reveals downside of filming House of the Dragon

It’s Matt Smith as you’ve rarely seen him.

The 39-year-old British actor has taken on his boldest role yet in HBO’s upcoming House of the Dragonthe much-anticipated prequel to game of Thrones debuting locally on Binge and Foxtel August 22.

Smith, who is best known for becoming the youngest actor to helm Doctor Who from 2010,-2014 as well as his Emmy-nominated performance as Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crownenter the thrones-sphere as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

The main antagonist – Daemon is the impulsive, power-hungry brother of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) in a world set around 200 years before the events of GoT.

While joining a franchise as universally lauded as thrones was reason enough to jump on-board, it was the complexities of this character that enticed Smith most.

“I thought he was really interesting and unknown. And I thought I could add something to him,” Smith says.

“I think you always feel an element of nerves going into every part, it felt sort of slightly outside of anything I’d done before, which is which is why I was attracted to do it.”

That’s not to say I loved every minute of it.

Smith says the nature of this production took an extreme physical and emotional toll on him. From sitting in the makeup chair for two hours to having the iconic Targaryen silver-haired wig fitted, to waiting around in hot, heavy armor.

“It was a great privilege to be apart of something like this, but it was grievous as well. It was a tough shoot. And it was a year over Covid and it wasn’t easy. It’s not like it was just bells and whistles,” he says.

“And this type of show, there’s so many characters in it. There’s a lot of hanging about on the set.”

Stream House of the Dragon on BINGE or watch on FOXTEL from August 22. New BINGE customers get a 14-day free trial and start streaming instantly. Sign up at binge.com.au

Admittedly, Smith feels overwhelmed on every set, saying his roles become his “sole focus.”

So, how does he stay sane?

“A pint of Guinness, watch some football. Go to the gym, do the normal stuff, walk my dog, you know, [I would] just go and do something that had nothing to do with blonde wigs and swords,” he says.

Few sets are as dynamic as this one. game of Thrones won Emmys for its immense fight scenes. Season 6’s ‘Battle of the Bastards’ (which was directed by HotD director Miguel Sapochnik) is as edge-of-your-seat-viewing as it gets.

Though, rehearsing such battles to the point of perfection can be risky.

French actor Fabien Frankel, who plays Sir Christen Cole in the prequel, reveals he almost damaged the money-maker – Smith’s pin-up face.

“I hit Matt in the face in our first rehearsal,” Frankel says. “My sword cut him in the head. We didn’t even really know each other.

Smith interjects, “It was your shield (which) hit my sword.”

While they laugh about it now, Frankel genuinely feared he was “going to get fired.”

“It was like, you know, you don’t want to insult Matt Smith,” he says.

Smith was one of the millions of diehard thrones fans, having watched the entirety of its eight season run.

He says he feels privileged to be welcomed into the world of Westeros for a new era, but of course, that sort of legacy warrants high stakes.

“But ultimately, it’s a good pressure,” Smith says.

“That had its own cultural footprint. And its success will never be repeated.

“There’s a huge fan base there. They love it. And we’re going to try and deliver something that’s original and entertaining and move the story forward, even though we’re moving the story backwards.”

Kyle and Jackie O slam Elle Ferguson after she calls herself a global influencer

She irked her fellow Block contestants on Sunday night’s premiere of the show when she raved about her lavish lifestyle.

And now Bondi fashionista Elle Ferguson has been slammed by radio host Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson after giving herself the title of ‘global influencer’.

During Monday morning’s Kyle & Jackie O Show, Kyle said he had never heard of the glamorous blonde.

‘Who the hell is she?!’ Kyle, 51, asked.

The pair also ribbed Elle for raving about becoming a representative for Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand SKIMS.

‘So you’re allowed to be a representative of a brand – company – wow,’ Kyle said sarcastically. ‘That’s really “making it.”‘

Jackie O noted that Elle, 38, gets sent ‘so many’ amazing gifts and PR packages from brands due to her 680,000 follower count on Instagram.

‘Every single day she’s opening a brand new Louis Vuitton bag, a brand new Gucci bag, or a brand new pair of shoes,’ she said, adding that it can become ‘a bit much’.

‘But people will get jealous of that,’ Kyle butted in. ‘They’ll end up turning on her. No one likes that.’

The first episode of The Block’s 18th season premiered on Sunday night, and despite Joel and Elle’s dramatic exit, which is set to air on Tuesday night, Jackie O said she didn’t think the pair brought any drama.

‘They seem to be pretty chill. They were alright,’ she continued.

‘There was nothing “diva” about their behaviour.’

‘Maybe they got there and thought, “S**t, this isn’t for us. We’re out of here.”‘ Kyle added.

But Elle and Joel immediately rubbed their co-stars the wrong way on Sunday night during The Block premiere after their intro packages.

The pair immediately irked other contestants with their glamorous lifestyle, including social worker Sarah Jane and her partner Tom.

Sarah Jane questioned the couple’s motives for joining a reality show, given that the ritzy pair don’t appear to need the prize money nor the extra fame.

‘She’s already famous with 600,000 followers on Instagram,’ Sarah-Jane seethed.

‘They’ve got a sh*tload of money. Why are you here?’ she added.

Sarah Jane continued: ‘Some I respect, obviously. Some make a huge career from it. Look at your Kim Kardashian and Rozalia Russian. People like that. Beck Judd. Good on them.

‘But people who just go on shows to be social media [stars]. I don’t have time for that sh*t. Like go and get a real job mate.’

She also sparked envy among The Block viewers on Sunday night as she opened the doors of her overflowing designer wardrobe.

She gleefully gave producers a tour of her clothing archives during the couple’s introductory scene as she boasted about working ‘really hard’ for her possessions.

Elle, who previously boasted to her fans about having three closets, chose to show off her ‘fun’ wardrobe, which was stuffed with accessories by the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Fendi and Miu Miu.

‘You know, I’ve worked really, really hard for every pair of shoes. And I could buy a house, but I bought shoes and bags, so… yeah!’ she boasted.

‘I think people will definitely put us into a box from our first image,’ Joel said.

‘But I don’t think it will take long for us to break that down and make genuine connections.’

The couple’s time on the show was over before it really began, after they threw in the towel for ‘family reasons’ after just 48 hours on the building site in country Victoria.

It is the first time a team has ever quit the Nine renovation show.

As reported by TV Week, host Cam told the other contestants Elle and Joel left because the show wasn’t ‘on brand’ for them as Sydney influencers. He also said they had complained ‘the toilet paper was too scratchy’.

The fashion influencer and her 37-year-old retired AFL player boyfriend, have disputed this, insisting they quit because of a legitimate family emergency.

The Block airs Sunday at 7.00pm and Monday to Wednesday at 7.30pm on Nine

The Bachelorette: Producer responds to calls for Schapelle Corby to be the next Bachelorette

Schapelle Corby is officially back on the market.

The convicted drug smuggler-turned-reality TV contestant posted about her newly-single status on Sunday, prompting immediate calls for her to be the next bachelorette, naturally.

Corby, 45, posted a photo of her presumably hand-in-hand with her scribbled-out ex-boyfriend Ben Panangian, with the call to action: “Looking for a New Four Leaf Clover. * ATTENTION *. Help a girl out – Get Tagging”.

The post included Papa Roach song Last Resort to drive her request home.

Responding to the revelation and subsequent bachelorette buzz, Warner Bros. executive producer Ed hinted it’s not off the table.

Speaking to Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa during a surprise call this morning, Ed confirmed there had been no decision made on the next bachelorette yet, prompting Fitzy to make his pitch.

“Schapelle Corby has broken up with Ben over in Bali and looking for love. Now there have been a lot of people suggesting it wouldn’t be great if Channel 10 could find Schapelle Corby Love?” I have suggested.

“I agree… I think a lot of people would tune in,” Ed responded, asking the pair: “Do you think she’d be good on the dates?” to which funnyman Fitzy suggested a final destination.

“And the final decision, her down to two guys, the final decision is in Kuta,” he joked about the popular Aussie tourist spot in Bali, where Corby was infamously arrested with her bodyboard bag in 2004.

Revealing they “hadn’t considered” Corby for the spot, Ed said: “We’ll absolutely put that to Channel 10.”

It wouldn’t be Corby’s first stint on Aussie TV since she was released from prison, having appeared on Channel 7’s SAS Australia in 2020, and Dancing With The Stars in 2021.

Corby spent nine years in Indonesia’s brutal Kerobokan Prison after she was convicted of smuggling 4.2kg of cannabis into the country via a checked-in boogie board bag.

It was at the notoriously rough prison where she met her Indonesian surfer ex Panangian in 2006.

Corby had previously shared they were eager to have a baby together, despite it being virtually impossible for Panagian to settle in Australia due to his criminal record.

The couple caught up overseas in countries that didn’t require visas for entry.

Geraldton Western Australia hairdresser exposes text messages from ‘creepy’ male customers

An Asian-Australian hairdresser has decided to publicly shame one of her sleazy male clients in the hope of deterring others in her town from making the same type of requests.

Kim Tran, 29, became the proud owner of the Walk In Barber Shop in Geraldton, a mining town in Western Australia’s mid-west, two years ago.

But since opening her shop, the hairdresser of 15 years said she has been asked to perform sexually explicit services such as ‘happy endings’ almost every day.

Kim received more than 200 of the lewd requests in her first month of business and after two years, the hairdresser is at breaking point.

‘Enough is enough,’ she told the Daily Mail Australia tearfully. ‘I can’t take it anymore.’

The hairdresser of 15 years told Daily Mail Australia that since opening she has been asked to perform sexually explicit services almost daily (pictured, Kim’s Walk In Barber Shop)

Kim has been having trouble sleeping and suffers anxiety from the constant messages, phone calls and in-person visits from sleazy clients who want more than just a haircut.

On Friday, she exposed one of the hundreds of messages she receives from single and married men, asking for sexual services.

Kim posted screenshots of messages from the man – including his phone number – and pleaded with others not to mistake her hairdressing services with those of a sex worker.

‘I would like to book in for a shave and trim with a happy ending please text me a time and cash amount,’ the man’s first message reads.

‘What happy ending are you asking about?’ Kim replied.

The customer then explained in disgusting terms: ‘Just nice rub to unload please!’

‘I don’t do a happy ending! You have to stop this,’ Kim hit back, saying she would report the man to local police.

Kim published one of the hundreds of explicit messages she receives from single and married men asking for sexual services (pictured, the text exchange with the client)

Kim (pictured) said she was scared to go to the police over fears of retaliation and said she was so busy she couldn't take a day off to lodge a report against the men who ask for lewd requests

Kim said she was too scared to go to the police over fears of retaliation and said she was so busy she had no time to take a day off and lodge a report.

‘Sometimes I worry if I report them, then they will know and get angry and they will come back to hurt me,’ she said.

The hairdresser said the non-stop requests for sexual services had put a strain on her relationship and caused arguments with her partner.

‘He gets angry and upset,’ Kim said.

‘He sometimes asks me for their numbers so he can call them and tell them to leave me alone’.

The 29-year-old wears her engagement ring to work every day but said it does little to stop the advances – some of which come from men who know her partner.

The clients who ask for sexual services can be as young as 19, but the majority come from men in their mid 30s to late 60s.

Kim said she gets in-person requests about twice a day and texts and phone calls asking if she offers explicit services every third or fourth day.

She has even put signs on the door and salon mirrors to remind customers she was a ‘hairdresser only’ but said the signs are mostly ignored.

One client offered her $2,000 to perform an explicit act while others have even tried to grab her mid-way through their haircut or while she’s holding the door for them.

One customer told the hairdresser he liked ‘small Asian girls’.

‘Men go to Vietnam and Thailand and it’s easy to get a girl for one night. They see an Asian girl and they think maybe she does that same service,’ Kim said.

The hairdresser is usually able to ignore the onslaught of requests for sexual services, but said in recent weeks, the unwanted attention had become unbearable.

‘I’ve been having some really rough times,’ she said through tears.

A large part of her job has become telling men no – which Kim said she does politely.

‘I say, “I’m very sorry but I am a hairdresser, I don’t do those jobs, please understand and leave me alone”,’ she said.

‘I have never got angry or crazy, even when I feel very sad. Even when people try and touch me in my shop. I tell them I am trying to earn a living for my family.’

Kim (pictured in her shop with her six-year-old daughter) said she is usually able to ignore the onslaught of lewd requests but that in recent weeks it had become unbearable

The hairdresser last week posted screenshots of a text exchange with a male customer to the Facebook page ‘Geraldton Neighborhood Watch’.

‘I am often looked down upon by others because I am Asian,’ she wrote.

‘Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

‘I believe there are many other women who have the same problem as me but the difference is that they don’t dare say to say it because they are shy or don’t want people to judge them.’

Kim said this was why she had included the man’s personal phone number.

‘If anyone is a relative of the person with the phone number below I hope they will find out the true face of the husband and father they are living with,’ she wrote.

Kim has also got in touch with Desert Blue Connect, a women's advocacy group, who made her feel 'much better' and said she deserved to be respected

The hairdresser ended her post by saying she hoped others wouldn’t do things that ‘affect the work psychology, joy or vitality’ of others.

‘I am just a barber. Please respect. Barber only,’ Kim reiterated.

Geraldton locals were quick to come to her defense with dozens of Facebook users condemning the ‘disgraceful’ request.

‘That is disgusting and no one should have to be subjected to such disgraceful and disrespectful behaviour,’ one woman wrote.

One man slammed the customer as a ‘sad individual’ and encouraged Kim to ‘rise above’ and leave it ‘along with the person who felt it in the gutter’.

‘So sorry you have to deal with this revolting creep and others like him,’ another said.

‘Hold your head high and good on you for posting this sicko’s number’.

One woman said she had received the same request mid-way though a haircut and urged her fellow hairdresser to ‘stay safe’.

Kim (pictured) hopes her post will stop the onslaught of requests from 'creepy' customers and give other victims of the same harassment the confidence to speak up

Kim (pictured) hopes her post will stop the onslaught of requests from ‘creepy’ customers and give other victims of the same harassment the confidence to speak up

Kim hopes that by speaking about her experience it will stop ‘creepy’ customers from asking her to perform sexual services in her shop.

She got in touch with Desert Blue Connect, a women’s advocacy group, who made her feel ‘much better’ and said she deserved to be respected.

The hairdresser said working two jobs has left her little time to read the comments but said she felt ‘very lucky’ to receive the support of the community.

Kim also hopes sharing her story will give other women a voice.

‘I hope many other victims read my post,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

Queen snubs Meghan Markle and doesn’t publicly wish her a happy birthday

Normally, the royal family is thoroughly predictable. They do the same things, eat the same things, and turn up at the same places like Swiss-made precision clockwork.

Summers are for long weeks in Scotland, the Queen habitually sets up shop at her Sandringham estate from December until February 6, (the Christmas decorations stay up until then too) and she is reportedly woken up at the same time, 365 days a year. (At 7.30am by her maid bearing Earl Gray tea.) Queens don’t ever get sleep-ins it would seem.

Likewise, royal birthdays. If it’s a big one and involves one of her children de ella, there might be an Admiralty or an extra earldom on offer; in every other instance it’s a peppy social media post involving an emoji (which always looks a tad incongruous) and a £10 WH Smith voucher. (OK, the last one I’m just guessing.)

However last week, with no fanfare and little press coverage, the 96-year-old Queen broke with longstanding tradition for the 41st birthday of her granddaughter-in-law Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Her Majesty did…nothing.

Even in the treacherous years post Megxit, in 2020 and 2021, we have seen the @royalfamily account share posts marking the birthdays of Meghan, the couple’s son Archie and their daughter Lilibet.

Up until now, the most notable thing you could say about this seemingly set-in-stone practice was that the poor Buckingham Palace communications staffer tasked with the job has only ever had one photo of baby Archie and the Queen to work with to deploy every year.

But, whoa Nellie. Something has clearly changed because here we have the Queen essentially blanking Meghan on her birthday. (Or in the immortal words of Mariah Carey, “I don’t know her.”)

Since Meghan joined the official royal ranks in 2018, this is the first time that the palace has ignored the former Suits star on birthday, a marked departure from previous polite celebratory offerings.

What makes this situation such a puzzler is that up recently, the Queen’s strategy when it came to her bothersome grandson and his wife has been appeasement, with certain signs that Her Majesty was going out of her way to minimize tensions.

When Prince Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lili jetted into the UK for the Jubilee, according to the Sunthe nonagenarian arranged for three of her protection officers to collect the family and for a bulletproof car to take them to their UK home, Frogmore Cottage.

Later in June, it was revealed that the details of the inquiry, conducted by an outside law firm, into allegations that Meghan had bullied royal staffers was going to be “buried”. (The Duchess has always vehemently denied the claims of bullying.)

The reason, in part, for the surprise decision, was “to limit tensions between the Sussexes and the palace,” the Times reported.

Then in July, the Sun reported that Her Majesty has extended an invitation to the family to join her for a spell during her annual holiday. (Though the chances of them taking her up on it would surely have to be up there with Princess Michael of Kent getting on to OnlyFans.)

Leading up until Meghan’s birthday last week, there was no indication that this year’s big day would be different to every other, given that even last year, after the Sussexes’ dynamite Oprah Winfrey interview, she received warm social media wishes.

If popping up on global TV screens to lob accusations of racism, cruelty and of the palace life being abjectly miserable was not enough to mitigate Meghan getting a birthday post last year, what has changed? What gives?

The answer may or may not have something to do with Harry’s memoir, rumored to be hitting shelves in October.

In late July, the Sun reported that the manuscript was complete and publisher Penguin Random House’s lawyers had finished dotting the ‘i’s’ and crossing out the most libelous claims about the corgis (just kidding).

the Telegraph followed that up by reporting that while “the royal family or its lawyers have yet had sight of the completed manuscript” they might soon learn about some of what the 37-year-old has written because, “by convention, those potentially defamed in writing – including the royal family – are usually given a right to reply to accusations ahead of publication”.

While the sovereign herself is unlikely to come in for anything but paragraph after paragraph of obsequious praise, her son Prince Charles, daughter-in-law and next queen Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and grandson Prince William might not be so lucky.

Since the beginning of the year, there has been nearly continuous reporting claiming that Harry may well target his stepmother.

The heir to the throne, it would seem, is already getting his starched and ironed knickers in a twist.

“Prince Charles’ operatives have been scrambling for months to find out what other bombshells await, but to no avail,” royal author Christopher Andersen told TheDailyBeast. “No one expected Harry’s book to be a Valentine to his relatives. But you get the sense in the wake of the Jubilee that now the gloves are truly off.”

The prospect remains that while the Sussexes’ Oprah blitzkrieg was hugely damaging for Buckingham Palace, they still managed to largely withstand the strike. Hundreds of pages of revelations and detailed, lengthy disclosures about royal family life and palace operation could be another kettle of fish entirely.

After all, this is the very first sensational tell-all written by someone who was born into the royal family since fellow exile the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) published his tell-all A Royal Life, albeit 15 years after his abdication. (Yes, I know the Duke of Kent published a memoir earlier this year called, err, A Royal Lifebut I’m not sure if anyone aside from the Duchess of Kent has actually read it.)

As Duncan Larcombe, The Sun’s former royal editor, put it when speaking to TheDailyBeast: “The reality is that if, as a senior member of the royal family, you have written a tell-all book, you have broken rule number one of the royal family.”

Richard Palmer, royal correspondent for the Express, has offered up another theory, reporting that the absence of any sort of warm wishes for Meghan was down to a change in palace policy and that the royal family “will only mark the birthdays of non-working members of the family when they end in a zero.” The test of this will come on Monday, UK time, when Princess Beatrice turns 34.

Even if this new birthday arrangement is the case, the fact that Buckingham Palace chose Meghan’s birthday as the time to put the new strategy into effect is seriously eyebrow-raising.

The bottom line is that no matter why @royalfamily decided to give Meghan the brush-off, being the first non-working member of the House of Windsor to come in for a regal blanking on their birthday, has some serious sting in the tail.

After all, if Her Majesty had been concerned that cold-shouldering the LA native might inflame tensions, or wanted to keep the peace with the fractious Sussexes, surely the palace would have waited to roll this new social media approach until after the Duchess’ birthday . No one is going to get up in arms or write news stories if Beatrice’s special day goes unmarked now, are they?

While the Queen is currently at Balmoral, settling into the big house after spending two weeks in Craigowan Cottage elsewhere on the estate, there are some choppy seas ahead for the royal family. Between September and Christmas, there will be the release of Harry’s book, the debut Sussexes’ “at home” docuseries for Netflix, the new season of The Crown focusing on the Diana years in the ’90s, the publication of books by two highly credible royal reporting veterans (Valentine Low, who broke the Meghan bullying story, and Angela Levin), the possibility that Prince Andrew’s accuser Virginia Giuffre could write her own tell -all and the ongoing fallout from Charles’ various questionable financial dealings in regards to his charity, including accepting a $1.7 million donation from a brother of Osama bin Laden.

It’s a list that seems to perpetually grow ever longer and ever more brow-furrowing for the royal house.

In 2016, Princess Eugenie told a documentary of the Queen’s Scottish estate: “I think Granny is the most happy there… You just have room to breathe and run.”

For Her Majesty, some long, deep breaths sound like a tip-top idea right now.

The Archers’ June Spencer retires aged 103 after 72 years on air as Peggy Woolley

The Archers’ June Spencer retires aged 103 after 72 years on air as Peggy Woolley

After 72 years, the voice of The Archers’ Peggy Woolley has retired at the age of 103.

June Spencer, who made her first appearance on the Radio 4 soap in May 1950, was the only remaining member of the original cast – but has finally stepped down despite pleas from BBC bosses.

‘I’ve been trying to retire for at least a year,’ she told The Daily Telegraph.

‘They didn’t want to lose their character. Every time I tried to stop, they gave me more episodes.

‘The idea was that the country characters having to explain things to Peggy educated the listeners.’

Miss Spencer, whose husband Roger Brocksom died in 2001, has already taped her last episodes, which were broadcast on July 31.

They were recorded from a custom studio at her Surrey home, to save her commuting to the show’s Birmingham base.

Mrs Woolley has not been officially removed from the show, and Miss Spencer admitted she didn’t know how she would be written out.

‘The simplest thing is if [Peggy has] to fall or something and goes into The Laurels [the fictional Ambridge care home],’ she said.

‘She can languish for years there.’

The Duchess of Cornwall recently called Peggy Woolley a ‘national treasure’.

Prince William and Kate about to embark on ‘next chapter of their lives’ as they move to Windsor

The Cambridge family are just weeks away from beginning the “next chapter in their lives” as they move to Windsor.

Prince William and Kate, and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are due to relocate to Adelaide Cottage where they will be closer to Queen Elizabeth.

The monarch now permanently lives at Windsor Castle, a stone’s throw from the new Cambridge home.

Adelaide Cottage meets the Cambridges’ desire for a “modest home” and being set within the large Windsor estate, it will give the children the privacy to play, ride their horses and walk their dog Orla without risk of being photographed.

Royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, Ingrid Seward, said it would be a welcome change from London.

“Kensington Palace is a glorious prison for kids – they want to be able to play football without being watched from behind the gates,” Seward said, reports The Sun.

“I think Windsor will be perfect for them, as they will have lots of freedom and they can all be at school together.”

Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were “ready for the next chapter in their lives.”

Goldsmith praised his childhood for holding the family together in what has been a turbulent couple of years for the monarchy.

“She shines in every situation, on every stage, and behaves with class.

“The royal family is in safe, beautiful and heaven-sent hands. She has got this in both the good times and the bad times.”

For the first time, all three Cambridge children will attend the same school, rumored to be Lambrook School, in Ascot, near Windsor Castle.

Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis are due to begin at their new school in September.

Before embarking on their new chapter at Windsor, the Cambridges are expected to join the Queen at Balmoral Castle where Her Majesty is enjoying a three-month summer getaway.

Her Majesty is expected to interrupt her Scottish holiday to travel to England in the coming weeks to invite her 15th Prime Minister to form a government.

It follows the resignation of Boris Johnson who will step down on September 6.

The winning candidate is expected to meet the monarch to officially accept the invitation.

The Queen doesn’t usually return from Balmoral Castle until early October but is believed to have told aides she will make an exception and travel to Buckingham Palace in London, or Windsor Castle.

Sources say it’s a duty Her Majesty intends to fulfill in person.

The Queen’s visit to welcome the new Prime Minister is expected to be briefed and she will return to Balmoral to continue her holiday.

MKR 2022: Nigella Lawson, Manu Feildel ‘heartbroken’ as Alice and Peter serve up ‘inedible’ dessert

Dad and daughter duo Peter and Alice, from Chewton in Victoria, were the first contestants on the new season of MKR to plate up to judges Manu Feildel and Nigella Lawson – and they were understandably excited.

Peter runs a café, Alice works there too, and together they’ve been cooking the dishes they were about to serve up for years and years.

They were using Alice’s grandma’s tried and tested recipes, guaranteed to please – what could possibly go wrong?

Remove a lot, as it turned out.

As the affable duo welcomed the other contestants into their home, the setting seemed perfect: sweet vintage flourishes on the dining table, a room full of cute collectables and curios, and a homey retro vibe.

This year’s MKR theme is good home cooking, and Peter and Alice had devised a simple but delicious-sounding menu that fits the theme.

They were so warm, hospitable, funny and expressive that you couldn’t help but immediately like them and want them to do well.

Although their entree was not a huge hit with the judges, they were redeemed with an excellent main meal, and then it all fell apart with a disastrous dessert.

“There is nothing on my face but sheer terror,” Alice said as a “poker-faced” Nigella and Manu tasted each of their offerings.

“They don’t give away anything!”

‘lots of pressure’

The entree, Sunday Roast croquettes with Grandma’s relish, failed to impress either judge.

“First to cook tonight,” Manu said. “It’s a big deal, isn’t it?”

“Lot of pressure,” Alice nodded. “Lot of pressure.”

Manu said he didn’t really get the “Sunday roast” feel from the croquette – questioning the dad and daughter’s choice to use braised beef cheeks.

“So, the meat was not roasted, then?” Manu asked.

“When I read roast, I got something different.

“I would have put more spice and seasoning in there as well.

“So I think the idea of it is magical, it’s fantastic, but I think you missed the point.”

Manu gives his verdict. Credit: Seven

Nigella agreed, saying the entree needed more seasoning, something that would make the diner think of Sunday roast stuffing.

The relish also didn’t hit the mark with either Manu or Nigella, with the sweet/sour balance not quite right.

The pair were crestfallen, agreeing that the idea was great, but the execution faltered.

Manu’s pep talk

It took a kitchen pep talk from Manu during the cooking of the main to drag Alice out of her deep funk after their first effort failed to impress the judges.

Manu’s interjection worked, and Alice and Peter then pulled out a stunning main course, parmesan crumbed lamb cutlets with minted peas, silverbeet and salsa verde.

This meal was a hit with both the judges and the other contestants, reinstating their confidence in the kitchen.

It was destined to be smooth sailing from there, right?

Dessert would be a breeze, rounding off the night with a bang after a shaky start.

Wrong!

desert disaster

Peter and Alice decided on one of Grandma’s favorite desserts, a delicious lemon pudding, for the final dish of the night.

But Alice’s grandma used to bake the lemon delicious in a casserole dish; Peter decided to add a retro touch by individually baking each dessert in a vintage teacup.

“It has to be this soft, silky sponge and then this beautiful, rich lemon custard beneath,” Peter explained.

It was meant to be fluffy and spongey beneath the surface, a “step down from a soufflé.”

But when Manu and Nigella tapped into the teacup and through the top layer, there was just a soupy, watery, unappetizing mess below.

Peter had underestimated how long each dessert needed to bake for, assuming that the crispy top meant it was cooked all the way through.

What they put on the table was runny, watery, and as one contestant claimed, “inedible.”

Manu told the devastated duo that if he’d been served that dessert in a restaurant, it would have immediately been sent back.

Everyone is gutted for the pair, who had been so welcoming, so nice, and so on-point with the previous plate.

But it was clear that the pressure of being the first team to plate up to Nigella and Manu got to them; their timing was all wrong and they hadn’t presented a cohesive menu.

Nigella Lawson describes the dessert fail as ‘really heartbreaking.’ Credit: Seven

Peter was particularly dejected, saying he’d cooked the lemon delicious hundreds of times, but on the one night where it was really important to get it right, it hadn’t come off.

“This is a pudding I’ve made every week for 30 years,” he said.

“I have to make it once, for 12 people, and it’s a disaster.”

‘Heartbreaking’

Nigella told the pair she was “sorry” the disaster happened on the wrong night, saying the dessert fail was “really heartbreaking.”

“It’s not your fault,” an utterly deflated Alice said.

“No, I know, but I wanted to see you with a smile back on your face,” Nigella replied.

“It was our last chance of redemption,” Alice said later.

“And unfortunately, we just didn’t get it right.”
