Australia has more than 100 new species, from spiders to a ‘special ant’

More than 100 new species have been discovered and named in Australia within the past year, including 11 jumping spider and a “special” ant, the CSIRO says.
The national science agency said the nation has 117 new insectthree plants, four marine fish, one frog, and 14 other invertebrates.

The discoveries have been branded a “win for biodiversity”, with researchers particularly excited about one ant.

CSIRO entomologist Dr David Yeates said the known but newly named ant, Anonychomyrma inclinatawas special, as it supports the endangered bulloak jewel butterfly, Hypochrysops piceatus.

“The ecological requirements for this beautiful butterfly are very narrow, which is probably why it is so rare,” Yeates said.

“The ant species we’ve now named needs to be nesting in a mature bulloak, Allocasuarina luehmannii.

“The butterfly caterpillars live under the bark and are carried to soft bulloak leaves to feed at night by ‘babysitter’ ants.

“The ants protect the caterpillars from predation and receive a sugary gift from the caterpillars, a win-win for both species.”

CSIRO scientist John Pogonoski said the new, “elusive” silverspot weedfish, Heteroclinus argyrospiloswas described from only two known specimens.

Both of these were collected from south-western Australia by researchers on the former CSIRO Research Vessel Southern Surveyor in 2000 and 2005.

“We named three new species of small, brightly-colored anthias by comparing specimens of related species held in fish collections,” Pogonoski said.

“New species of anthias are still being recognized because they are rarely encountered due to being outside of normal diving depths, small in size, or living in habitats difficult to sample.”

Scientists found four members of the new species in southern Western Australia, 60 meters underground last year.

And 34 new beetles, including two weevils in the new genus undarobiuswere found in lava caves at Volcanic National Park in north-eastern Queensland.

Yeates added the newly named species to highlight the importance of scientific collaboration.

“Working together with our research community to name species is incredibly important – it is the first step in Australia understanding and managing its biodiversity,” Yeates said.

“As a country, we are still in the very exciting phase of species discovery.”

CSIRO said only about 25 per cent of Australia’s species are known to science.

Top Pakistani Taliban leader Omar Khalid Khorasani killed in Afghanistan

Comment

KABUL — A top leader of the Pakistani Taliban militia was reported killed Sunday in southeastern Afghanistan, potentially dealing a serious blow to peace talks being negotiated between the extremist group and Pakistani officials with assistance from senior Taliban leaders in Afghanistan.

An aid to the Pakistani militia leader, known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, said in a tweet Monday morning that he died in a bomb blast in southeastern Afghanistan. “He is no more with us,” said the aide, Ehsanullah Ehsan. “May Allah… give him the highest place in Jannah,” or heaven.

The reported death of Khorasani followed months of talks that began shortly after Afghan Taliban forces took power in Kabul one year ago. Numerous delegations have met in Afghanistan since then to help end the years-long conflict between Pakistani forces and hard-line Pakistani militants.

There were conflicting reports Monday on the circumstances of Khorasani’s death and the precise location in southeastern Afghanistan where it occurred.

Ehsan told The Washington Post that two other Pakistani Taliban leaders who were traveling with Khorasani, Mufti Hassan Swati and Hafiz Dawlat Khan, were killed in the same incident. In a brief online conversation via Telegram, he said all three were killed by an “IED blast,” referring to an improvised explosive device or roadside bomb, but he did not specify where it happened or who was responsible. He said Khorasani was “leading the committee for peace negotiations.”

In the capital, Kabul, Taliban authorities have been struggling to contain a rash of terrorist attacks on the Shiite Muslim community over the past week. The attacks, mostly claimed by Islamic State militants, have caused panic in the Shiite Muslim community as it observes a period of religious mourning for a revered figure: Imam Hussein, a grandson of the prophet Muhammad slain in battle in the 7th century.

Taliban officials had promised to protect the community’s 10-day mourning tradition, which was due to culminate Monday with processions and funereal music, bringing tens of thousands of people into the streets. But after the third attack Saturday — a bombing in the heart of the Shiite community — officials virtually shut down the activities for fear of further violence.

On Monday morning, police cut off the area to all outside traffic and banned all local traffic. Roadside displays of brilliant religious flags and banners were taken down, and security forces in armored vehicles, some mounted with machine guns, continually patrolled the near-empty streets.

Taliban officials also cut off local cellphone signals across Kabul on Monday to prevent remote-controlled bombings. Two of the recent terrorist attacks involved bombs that were hidden in ordinary objects in separate crowded areas of the Shiite community and were detonated remotely.

“People here are very afraid now after what has happened, but still they have strong feelings that they must come out and honor Imam Hussein,” Habib Rezaie, 45, told a travel agent. “He was a great hero for the world, not only for Islam. But I think in these circumstances, it would be better if people stay home and not express that love so extravagantly.”

Among the few pedestrians who dared come out on the streets Monday were some female medical students who were supposed to report for an exam. They hurried nervously along the sidewalk, clutching papers and exam books, just two blocks from the site that was bombed Saturday.

“We are all scared. Our parents didn’t want us to go out, and we thought the Taliban might not give us permission, but we have to take these exams. It’s for our future,” said one student, 23, who gave her name only as Salaina.

Taliban officials have been struggling for months to respond to the Shiite community’s concerns about continuing attacks from the Islamic State, an extremist Sunni Muslim group that has repeatedly staged attacks in Kabul and other cities since the Taliban took power last August. In April, it bombed a large high school and a crowded shrine.

In an especially brazen attack Wednesday, the militants commandeered an apartment building and started shooting at a Taliban security patrol after reportedly taking some residents’ hostage. It took government forces nearly seven hours to quell the assault.

In attempting to prevent worse violence, Taliban authorities face an awkward balance between protecting local Shiites — a group they once persecuted — and allowing them the freedom they have long demanded to hold religious events. The Taliban forbade those same events when the Sunni Muslim group held power from 1996 to 2001.

Over two decades of US-backed administrations, as the minority Shiite and ethnic Hazara populace gained influence and success, its commemoration of Imam Hussein, during a religious period called Muharram, grew from a small, modest event inside Shiite areas to an ambitious display of colorful banners and archways put up over streets across the entire capital.

“People are worried, 100 percent, and they fear we will see more chaos coming, but it is not right for the authorities to stop our celebration either,” said Noor Mohammed, 55. “Imam Hussein is our champion. We know he would not want us to lose our lives, but people feel they must come out and show their feelings at any cost.”

In addition to grappling with terrorist attacks from extremist groups in West Kabul, the Taliban regime has been reeling since a US drone fired a missile on July 31 at a luxurious house in central Kabul, killing Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of al-Qaeda since a US raid killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. Taliban officials have denied they knew he was living there, and they have accused the United States of violating their 2020 peace agreement by attacking the house.

The death of Khorasani marks another setback for Taliban efforts to reduce conflict at home and in the region. In this case, the Taliban has been working with Pakistani officials for nearly a year to engineer a peace agreement with the Pakistani Taliban, after facing accusations from Pakistan that it was secretly supporting the group. The effort resulted in a month-long cease-fire in November, but the militants resumed attacks after that.

Haq Nawaz Khan in Peshawar, Pakistan, contributed to this report.

iOS 16 beta brings back the battery percentage icon

Earlier today, Apple released the fifth iOS 16 developer beta. It, but if you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you know there’s only one thing everyone wants to talk about: the return of the battery percentage indicator. For the first time since Apple removed the icon in 2017 to accommodate the notch, it’s possible to see exactly how much battery your iPhone has left without pulling down the Control Center shade.

If you’re enrolled in the developer beta, you can add the indicator to your status bar by opening the Settings menu and navigating to the Battery section. Once there, you’ll see a new toggle labeled “Battery Percentage.” The resulting icon is slightly larger than the one you’re probably used to seeing. Additionally, if you plug your iPhone into a charger, the icon will turn green and display a lightning symbol next to the battery percentage. Conversely, it’s yellow when your iPhone is in low power mode.

The option to see battery percentage is not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 mini. We’ll also note it’s possible the feature may not make it into the final release of . The next version of Apple’s mobile operating system will arrive later this year. Some of the more notable features Apple announced at WWDC 2022 include new lock screen customization options, the ability to edit and recall texts in iMessage and real-time notifications called Live Activities.

Lars von Trier diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease

Controversial Oscar-nominated Danish director Lars von Trier has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The 66-year-old’s longtime production company, Zentropa, announced the news in a statement Monday with his blessing to do so, according to Deadline.

“In agreement with Lars von Trier, Zentropa has chosen to publish that Lars has [been] diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,” shared Louise Vesth, Trier’s producer at Zentropa, in the statement, reported the new york post.

“This is done to counter any speculation about his health ahead of the premiere of The Kingdom Exodus.

Trier’s third and final installation of his 1990s cult supernatural TV series The Kingdom is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August.

“Lars is in good spirits and is being treated for his symptoms, and work to complete The Kingdom Exodus continues as planned,” Veth added.

Trier is not expected to do much press to promote the show due to his diagnosis.

Trier’s other credits include Dancer in the Dark, antichrist, melancholia and the nymphomaniac films.

His career has been deemed controversial, especially when more than 100 viewers walked out — while others gave a standing ovation — during a screening of his 2018 film The House That Jack Built at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Matt Dillon plays a serial killer who, when he isn’t graphically mutilating women, hunts little kids with a rifle. His co-star Uma Thurman conveniently had a scheduling conflict and didn’t show up,” new york post‘s Johnny Oleksinski wrote at the time.

Von Trier also “joked” that he could “sympathise” with Nazi Adolf Hitler during a 2013 Cannes press conference for melancholia, as a horrified Kirsten Dunst looked on. The filmmaker was banned from Cannes for seven years.

Trier also made movies under a Danish movement called the Dogma 95, in which films were made without any artificial lighting, tacked-on music or shooting scenes out of sequence.

The Idiotswhich includes an explicit sex scene, was the first film made following Dogma 95 rules in 1998.

In addition, all Dogma 95 films were made with hand-held cameras and directors were not credited.

Patients getting stuck at transitional accommodation for an average of six months, report finds

A review into transitional accommodation for people with disabilities who have been discharged from hospital has found some people are getting stuck at facilities almost permanently, amid reports from patients that they are receiving substandard care.

The State Government ordered a review of the Transition to Home facilities after multiple complaints, including the case of a man known as “Mr D” who was found by ambulance staff in squalid conditions with an infected wound.

Mr D was at a Hampstead facility that has since closed, but the remaining Transition to Home programs at The Repat and St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospital have also come under fire for a lack of care, with allegations clients have been left to soil themselves in their wheelchairs .

Last week, the ABC revealed multiple complaints from patients at the Repat Health Precinct, including allegations that patients were being left in their own faeces and had been given the incorrect doses of medication.

Originally designed to help NDIS clients stuck in hospital waiting for support to return home or to permanent accommodation, the independent report has found clients were being referred to the service without a discharge pathway, “resulting in clients being admitted whose length of stay in T2H will most likely to be static, long stay or permanent.”

It found while the expected length of stay in a T2H facility was 90 days, the average length of stay was 207 days. As of June this year the longest stay was 536 days.

Staff and clients told the reviewers that in some cases clients were waiting on simple home modifications, but NDIS requirements to get three quotes, combined with the post COVID-19 market was leading to delays.

Major facility misunderstanding

The report found the centers were designed to operate as step-down facilities, but there were frequent misunderstandings with clients who expect ongoing hospital-level care, a situation exacerbated by their location in a hospital setting.

While both facilities were supposed to be a home-like environment, the report found they had significant limitations including shared rooms with just curtains to separate clients, a lack of storage, limited access to outdoor areas and a lack of amenities like kitchen and laundry facilities. .

The so-called “Robust Unit” at The Repat was singled out.

“The new Robust Units … are stark and confronting, and the current bright white color and fit out are unlikely to contribute to calming a person with challenging behaviour,” the report found.

It found St Margaret’s “arrangements are of a much higher standard, although a number of shared rooms impact client privacy and dignity”.

The facilities have already been subject to multiple investigations, including internal audits and an inquiry by the Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner.

Shooter still on the run as 3 others charged

Three people, including Best Western employees, were charged Monday in connection to the shooting at Mall of America on Thursday, Aug. 4. The shooter remains at large and has not been formally charged.

They’re accused of helping the shooter and another man evades arrest.

The three people charged are:

  • Denesh Raghubir, 21, of Minneapolis, is charged with aiding an offender to avoid arrest
  • Delyanie Kwen-Shawn Arnold, 23, of Burnsville, is charged with aiding an offender to avoid arrest
  • Selena Raghubir, 23, of Bloomington, is charged with aiding an offender to avoid arrest

The charges

Police working at Mall of America responded to multiple gunshots at the Nike store, where they found three shell casings on the floor inside the entrance. Officers checked surveillance video, which showed a fight breaking out involving six people near the checkout of the store, causing customers to run away.

Then two people involved in the altercation left the store briefly before the suspect returned and fired a handgun several times at the males involved in the fight. The suspected shooter, identified Monday as 21-year-old Shamar Lark, and another man, identified as 23-year-old Rashad May, then ran out the north doors of the mall, into the IKEA parking lot, charges said.

It was later learned the two men may have been picked up by a Best Western hotel shuttle at IKEA and were taken to the hotel, just south of Mall of America.

May called Arnold a few minutes after the shooting, and he received five calls from Arnold between 4:20-4:23 pm, the complaint said. Arnold then contacted his girlfriend, Selena Raghubir, who is an assistant manager at the Best Western, as well as Selena Raghubir’s cousin, Denesh Raghubir, who picked up Lark and May at IKEA in the Best Western shuttle.

Denesh Raghubir told police he knew the two men were friends of Selena Raghubir, and when he dropped them off at Best Western, Selena Raghubir immediately left the front desk and he didn’t see her for about 45 minutes, charges said. He said Selena Raghubir later called him and asked him what time police left.

On Aug. 5, officers searched Arnold and Selena Raghubir’s home and vehicle, where they found the shirts the men were wearing at the time of the shooting, charges said.

People evacuating Mall of America after shooting

Security confirms Mall of America is on lockdown. Bloomington police officers are on scene. Several witnesses told FOX 9 they heard shots fired and then saw people frantically running through the mall.

The complaint says, “The assistance provided by Selena Raghubir, Denesh Raghubir and Arnold and the misinformation provided to police resulted in the flight of [the two men] and the interference in the investigation of the shooting at the Mall of America.”

The three people charged are in custody and are scheduled to make their first court appearance at 1:30 pm on Tuesday. The two people they’re accused of helping after the shooting remain at-large.

Search for the suspects

During a Monday afternoon news conference, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges released photos showing Lark and May. Hodges says May “prompted” Lark to shoot up the store – which Lark followed through on.

Thankfully, no one was hurt by the gunfire but the shooting created a panic with people rushing out of the mall while police with rifles swept the stores, looking for the shooters and victims.

Police are asking members of the public for help finding Lark and May. A nationwide warrant has been issued for their arrests.

“You cannot, in a free society, continue to enjoy all the freedoms that we have and when you show a complete lack of respect for humanity by firing in a crowded mall store,” said Chief Hodges. “We cannot tolerate that as a society.”

Chief Hodges also warned anyone else who might be helping the suspects that they will arrest any other individuals who aid the wanted men.

More than 70,000 Amazon shoppers rave about this Contigo travel mug — and it’s 50% off

Making a daily commute with a hot cup of coffee is like navigating an obstacle course. A disposable paper cup won’t keep your coffee hot for long, while a plastic coffee mug will leave you prone to spills, which can be dangerous. Luckily, Amazon has a one-day sale happening on the mega popular Contigo Autoseal West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug. Just for today, it’s almost 50% off!

Shoppers are absolutely obsessed with this mug. In fact, it has more than 69,800 perfect reviews, which is mind-boggling even by Amazon standards! It’s on sale for just $14 (originally $26), and you can get it in a slew of different colors.

This handy travel cup features Contigo’s “Autoseal” technology, which shuts the mug’s mouthpiece after every sip. The Autoseal prevents any hot liquid from spilling or leaking, even if the mug is turned upside down or accidentally falls to the ground. To open and re-open, just push the large button on its screw-on lid for a swig.

There’s also this cool feature to consider from a five-star reviewer: “I love that you can drink out of either side of the lid. So, if you grab the mug with your left hand, you can bring it right up to your mouth.” and take a sip. Same with grabbing it from your right side. You don’t have to turn the mug around or find the hole to take a sip.”

Have mug, will travel. (Photo: Amazon)

The West Loop mug fits in most car cupholders and the screw-on lid is top-rack dishwasher-safe. Contigo recommends hand washing the stainless steel body.

“The unicorn of all travel cups!” wrote a smitten shopper. “This travel cup pretty much has everything you could possibly want. It’s beautifully designed and fits well in the cup holder of my car. The finish is very artistic, and I love that it is powder-coated, making it extra durable, not slippery, and fingerprint-proof. They have redesigned the lid so that it’s now easy to clean. It keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for a long time. But most important, it is truly leak-proof, and it’s designed very intuitively with the button that you press to drink right where you hold the cup…I really couldn’t be any happier unless they were free.”

A fellow happy customer pointed out that it can keep “coffee hot for hours” and “iced tea cold for hours.”

Again, this is a one-day sale. Don’t miss your chance to grab a next-level travel mug while you still can!

4-year-old US kid announces transition to male gender

A four-year-old child has captured hearts – and sparked a heated online debate – after announcing he was a boy via a rainbow-fueled gender reveal at the Vancouver Pride Parade in Canada.

Charlie Danger Lloyd was assigned female at birth – but from a young age expressed he was a boy, his mum said, as reported by the new york post.

Now-viral footage and photos captured the moment young Charlie – with his grandmother by his side – released a confetti cannon that filled the area with blue smoke.

“Once they closed the road, Charlie strutted out with Grammy and they faced the sidelines and after a short struggle, the cannon exploded with blue smoke and biodegradable confetti,” his mum, 27-year-old Alaina Bourrel, told South West News Service after her little boy ran into her arms.

“Charlie jumped with joy as the crowd cheered him on. He couldn’t believe the love and support he was shown from the bystanders.”

Despite Charlie’s happiness, his mum said she has come under attack by vicious trolls online, calling her a “paedophile, groomer and rapist” for her son’s transition.

However, Ms Bourrel said that her child started expressing different gender needs at the age of two, telling her family he was “growing to look just like daddy” and “I’m a boy” all day, every day.

The proud mum said the parade moment was dreamt up after they told Charlie the family held a previous gender reveal before he was born – where the smoke didn’t work properly.

“When we told him the story, he asked for a re-do with his granny at the Vancouver Pride Parade – so we bought him a smoke cannon and tucked it away for this day,” she said.

“He wasn’t your typical little girl. He would play with other boys and the parents would say he was more of a boy than their own children,” Ms Bourrel recalled, saying the family didn’t think anything of it until the end of 2021, when he didn’t want to shop in the girl’s section and wanted his hair cut short.

“He refused to shop in the girl’s section, but was too nervous to shop in the boy’s. After lots of expressing his feelings and emotions with me, he decided that he wanted a new wardrobe so we set out to find our new style.”

About a month after buying his new wardrobe, Charlie was ready to get his hair cut.

“We made an appointment with Lia at Big Bros Barbershop, a trans-owned and operated salon in East Vancouver,” his mum said.

“After leaving the salon that afternoon, Charlie was a completely new child.”

After changes to his wardrobe and his appearance, his confidence went through the roof.

“We are four months since he began his social transition now,” Ms Bourrel said.

“He is still a normal kid that does completely normal little kid things like play with Lego, uses his creativity and learns to ride his bike.”

Despite online haters who criticize her parenting choices, she said Charlie’s family and friends have been nothing but supportive of the preschooler.

“His choices were not questioned and he was congratulated and everyone began using new pronouns,” she said, adding it is no different to raising any other child and she appreciates the support from those in their inner circle.

“We are so lucky to have the circle that we do.”

Watch Todd Payten on Face-to-face with Matty Johns on Tuesday night at 7.30pm on Fox League.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten revealed Johnathan Thurston originally didn’t want him at the club due to the fact he beat him in the 2005 Grand Final, while playing for the Tigers.

Payten’s Tigers beat Thurston’s Cowboys 30-16 in the 2005 decider and the future Immortal took the loss as hard as anyone on the night.

However, even nearly 10 years later when Payten joined the Cowboys as an assistant, Thurston wasn’t interested in having a player who beat him in a grand final coaching at his club.

“A funny story he (Thurston) didn’t want me at the club,” Payten said on Face-to-face with Matty Johns.

“Obviously we had a history, Tigers vs. Cowboys in the 2005 Grand Final.

“Peter Parr brought it up with Johnno and he said, no way he is not at our club.

“In the end he had to be talked around and I’m grateful that they talked him around.”
