The prime suspect in two Dayton, Ohio, shootings that left four people dead has been taken into custody, police confirmed on Saturday.

‘Lucky to be alive’: Actress Anne Heche survives horrific car crash that left her “engulfed in flames”

US actress Anne Heche is in hospital following an accident in which her car smashed into a house and flames erupted.

“Anne is currently in stable condition,” Heather Duffy Boylston, Heche’s friend and podcast partner, said in a statement on Saturday.

“Her family and friends ask for your thoughts and prayers and to respect her privacy during this difficult time.”

Another source close to Heche told CNN “she’s lucky to be alive” and has severe burns.

The source said Heche should expect a long recovery ahead.

Heche’s car rammed into a garage, before speeding off and driving into a house in Los Angeles’ Westside shortly before 11AM on Friday, police said.

The car came to a stop inside the two-storey house and erupted in flames.

The fire took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to douse, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Footage showed a blue Mini Cooper Clubman, badly damaged and burned, being towed out of the home, with Heche sitting up on a stretcher and struggling as she was put in an ambulance.

She was originally in a ‘critical condition’, but friends have now said the actress is stable.

Police are still investigating the incident, however so far no other injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been made.

According to CNN, authorities are yet to question Heche about the circumstances of the incident due to the significant nature of her injuries.

She first came to prominence on the soap opera Another World from 1987 to 1991, in which she won a Daytime Emmy Award for the role.

In the late 1990s she became one of the hottest stars in Hollywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films.

She co-starred with Johnny Depp in 1997’s Donnie Brasco; with Tommy Lee Jones in 1997’s Volcano; with Harrison Ford in 1998’s Six Days, Seven Nights; with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix in 1998’s Return To Paradise, and with an ensemble cast in the original 1997 I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000 heightened her fame and brought immense public scrutiny.

In the autumn of 2000 soon after the two broke up, Heche was hospitalized after knocking on the door of a stranger in a rural area in California.

Authorities said she had appeared shaken and disoriented, and spoke incoherently to the residents.

In a memoir released the following year, Call Me Crazy, Heche talked about her lifelong struggles with mental health and a childhood of abuse.

She was married to camera operator Coleman Laffoon from 2001 to 2009, with whom she had a son.

He has another son with actor James Tupper, her co-star on the TV series Men In Trees.

Watch video of the moment England goal defense Layla Guscoth smashes into the post against Australia’s Diamonds at the Commonwealth Games netball in Birmingham

It was a no-holds-barred start to Australia’s netball semi-final against England at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The game started extremely physically, but nothing would compare to one of the players crashing into and breaking a goal post in the first quarter.

The incident occurred as England goal defense Layla Guscoth went for an intercept, with the momentum of the effort sending her crashing into the post.

She got up smiling and was unharmed and able to continue the game.

Not so much for the post – which needed to be replaced.

After a short pause in the game, the bent post was pulled out and a new one slotted into its position.

Diamonds cut through Roses into the end

Meanwhile, Australia’s Diamonds cut ruthlessly through England’s Roses, earning sweet, sweet revenge for their painful 2018 Commonwealth Games final defeat.

Australia, also smarting from their shock loss to Jamaica in the group stages, roared back to steam into the final, outplaying England 60-51 in their semi-final at the NEC Exhibition Center on Saturday.

It was a surgical triumph, built on the brilliance and fluidity of the Diamonds’ movement as they repeated their Quad Series final demolition of England in London in January.

Silencing the shrill and deafening support of the home crowd, their victory set up another chance of revenge for Stacey Marinkovich’s team in the gold medal game against Jamaica’s Sunshine girls on Sunday.

It gives Australia the chance of a fifth Commonwealth crown after they were sensationally dethroned in the 2018 final by Helen Housby’s last-ditch goal.

There never looked like a repeat of that shock from Housby and her colleagues, one which has become enshrined as one of the best moments in English women’s sport. The Australians took command midway through the first quarter and never released their vice-like grip.

Inspired by the brilliance inside the shooting circle of Gretel Bueta, who dominated England’s defenders with her 43 goals from 44 attempts, the Diamonds led by three after the first quarter, six at halftime and nine after the third.

It was a relentless stranglehold, the speed of Australia’s ball movement in contrast to England’s cumbersome build-up towards the net.

Every one of Marinkovich’s team, led by captain Liz Watson and Courtney Bruce, on her 50th cap, had a fine match.

There had been a bizarre early stoppage in the opening period at 3-3 when England’s Layla Guscoth crashed into the net post while trying to make an interception.

That prompted a delay to the game as running repairs were made to the post, but from that moment Australia never looked back.

Earlier, the Jamaicans had continued their inspired form, following up their 57-55 defeat of Australia with a convincing 67-51 win over world champions New Zealand.

Gold Coast-based Hard Fizz company makes $10m during Covid lockdown

A popular alcohol brand owned by a group of celebrity entrepreneurs has taken off in Queensland.

The Gold Coast-based Hard Fizz company – which launched in 2020 during the height of the Covid pandemic – was co-founded by model and entrepreneur Chloe Fisher, 30, and her husband Paul, 35, a Grammy-nominated DJ.

“When the pandemic first started, Paul and I were at home on the Gold Coast wondering what we were going to do,” Ms Fisher said.

“His gigs were cancelled, he couldn’t tour and then we were pitched the idea of a seltzer company.”

Celebrities such as DJ Tigerlily, TV personality Brooke Evers, professional surfer Laura Enever and Aussie chef Hayden Quinn also front the brand, which is now stocked in more than 3000 outlets across the country, including Dan Murphy’s and BWS.

Hard Fizz has grown to be the third most popular seltzer in Australia behind White Claw and Smirnoff.

After returning from the US, the Fishers discovered a gap in the Australian market for the popular vodka-based drink.

“After spending so much time in the States, we knew how huge hard seltzer is there – it was an untapped market in Australia.” Ms Fisher said.

“People were drinking it everywhere in the states,” Mr Fisher said.

The pair, who collectively share more than 1.6 million Instagram followers, got married in 2020 before the launch of their new brewery in the Gold Coast suburb of Miami.

The business, which has amassed more than $10m in sales this year, and $7.5m in its first year, is made up of a team of 70 per cent women.

“I’m so proud to be involved in a company with such a large and strong female contingent,” Ms Fisher said.

“It’s been so amazing to see the company take shape with so many dominant females.”

Hard Fizz chief executive Wade Tiller said in the 15 years he had worked in the industry, he had never seen such a female-dominated workplace, with women taking up roles in sales management, business development, activation, trademarking and marketing.

“Working in the industry over the years, I think my colleagues were 80 per cent men,” he said.

“I think drinking habits have changed and society is slowly changing for the better.”

Employee Sophia Pearson said since joining the company she had leapt from promotion to promotion.

“I’ve been promoted twice in about seven months and they have both been from them coming to me.” she said.

“It’s honestly quite refreshing.”

Australian Distillers Association chief executive Paul McLeay told NCA NewsWire that distillers specifically still had a “long way to go” when it comes to gender equity.

“(Women in distilling) still sit at 25 per cent, so, yeah, there’s a long way to go,” he said.

“We support and encourage women into the industry and we have some extraordinary women distillers that are doing some amazing products.”

Long-term trends in alcohol consumption show Australians are drinking better-quality products, with women leading the shift in patterns.

“Gin for example has an 85 per cent female customer base,” Mr McLeay said.

Government figures show almost three times as many Australian women choose to enjoy spirits rather than beer.

Although there are no official statistics to represent how many women work in the alcohol industry, it is estimated around just 15 per cent of women accounted for all distillers.

Nick Kyrgios into final in Washington

That four-set defeat to Djokovic at the All England Club remains the 27-year-old’s only loss in his past 11 matches since mid-June.

“I’m just happy to be in another ending,” Kyrgios said.

“I didn’t get to sleep until 4.50am. I had so much adrenalin. I ate some dinner, got some treatment and just my body was so sore after last night.

“It was an epic battle [against Tiafoe]. I didn’t really do much today and I felt like my energy was a little flat today early on.

“It’s understandable – I’m only human – but my adrenaline for the final is going to be right there. I’m super excited for it.”

Had the ATP not stripped Wimbledon of rankings points in objection to the All England Club’s banning of Russian and Belarusian players because of the invasion of Ukraine, Kyrgios would have regained his place in the world’s top 15.

loading

Instead he remains at No.63 and continues to make a mockery of the men’s rankings, which ridiculously also have Djokovic at world No.6, the Serbian superstar’s lowest position in 15 years.

Kyrgios’ run in Washington guarantees the 27-year-old a rise to at least No.42 in the world and he’s projected to climb to 37th if he lands a seventh pro title.

With big events coming up in Montreal and Cincinnati, Kyrgios is on track to secure an all-important seeding for the US Open starting on August 29 in New York.

The most recent of his six ATP titles came in Washington in 2019 and he’ll play either Russian top seed Andrey Rublev or Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in his 11th career final, hoping to snare another.

SES orders Wagga Wagga residents in low-lying areas to evacuate amid flood fears

Residents in parts of Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Riverina have been ordered to evacuate as floodwaters rise.

The State Emergency Service has told people in and around low-lying areas to leave before 6pm on Sunday evening, August 7.

The areas include:

• Edward Street West
• Flowerdale Road
•Roach Road
• McNickle Road
•Lower Gardener Street
•Wilks Park
• Eunony Bridge Road
•Mill Street

The SES says once flood waters reach 8.7 meters at the Wagga gauge, roads will be cut and access to water and sewerage may be lost.

SES deputy southern zone commander Barry Griffiths said the order had been issued because of concerns roads would be cut off, rather than houses being inundated.

He said about 120 residents were affected by the order.

SES officer Barry Griffiths in front of an SES van/
Barry Griffiths warns residents even shallow flood water is a hazard.(ABC Riverina: Romy Stephens)

“Essentially this one’s been done on the public safety issue,” he said.

“Properties should be OK at these levels but there are some areas of the North Wagga area, north of the Murrumbidgee River, that do experience quite rapid water moving through which is dangerous to motorists.

“Even shallow water is capable of killing.”

People who choose to stay after 6pm could be trapped without power and it may be too dangerous for the SES to rescue them.

Wherever possible, people should go and stay with family or friends but there is an evacuation center at Kyeamba Smith Hall, at the Wagga Wagga Showground.

Farmer prepares for floodwater

John Keough, who owns more than 20 hectares on the floodplain near Flowerdale Lagoon, has prepared livestock and equipment to be moved if needed.

He said he was not overly concerned about his property being impacted.

“We’re on the river so it floods, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful spot, beautiful soil and the reason is because you get floods so you just live with that.”

Moderate flooding is also possible at Narrandera from Tuesday.

Court records reveal more about Laurel’s quadruple homicide, suspect’s arrest | News

LAUREL — It took law enforcement less than 24 hours to arrest a suspect after four bodies were found in Laurel.

Jason A. Jones, 42, of Laurel was arrested Friday at 2:30 am in connection to four deaths found within blocks of each other, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. The four victims were found deceased in separate residences in the early-morning hours on Thursday.

Court records obtained by the Daily News have revealed more information about the alleged incident that led up to the victims’ deaths on Thursday.

According to the court records, a 911 call was made by a male around 3:30 am on Thursday after he heard an explosion that occurred at 209 Elm St. Laurel Fire and EMS arrived on the scene and located a woman lying inside the back door of the residence. She was pronounced dead on the scene after lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful.

Court records state that the woman appeared to have suffered two gunshot wounds. A bullet casing was found near her body.

The woman was later identified as Michelle Ebeling, 53, by the Nebraska State Patrol.

A fire also appeared to occur inside the residence after burn marks were observed on the floor, walls and furniture, according to the court records. The smell of smoke and gasoline was also present at the time, indicating that the fire had just occurred.

According to the records, a red fuel container could be observed and a discolored trail on the floor indicated that a fire accelerant was used on the scene.

A search warrant was later issued for Jones’ residence at 206 Elm. St, according to the court records. After entering the house, the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team found several receipts in a black backpack.

Two receipts showed purchases from Cubby’s Gas Station and Rath’s Mini Mart in Laurel under Jones’ credit card, but it was not stated what he purchased from the gas station and liquor store.

However, another receipt found that a 6-gallon auto shutoff gas can, fuel tank and camping backpack were purchased from a department store in Sioux City, Iowa, under Jones’ credit card.

On Thursday, investigators met with an employee at Rath’s Mini Mart and viewed camera footage, which showed Jones pumping gas into two red gas cans, court records stated.

Shortly after the first incident was reported, a 911 call was made regarding smoke coming from a residence located at 503 Elm St.

Laurel Fire and EMS arrived on the scene and discovered soot damage consistent with fire, court records indicated.

According to the court records, three individuals were found in the residence, and all appeared to have gunshot wounds. The victims were Gene and Janet Twiford, 86 and 85, respectively, and Dana Twiford, 55. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A firearm was found at the residence, which was purchased by Jones, according to the court records, which also stated that the gunshot wounds were consistent with the firearm found. However, the gunshot wounds to Ebeling appeared to have been shot by a different caliber firearm that has not been located, authorities said.

According to the court records, Jones will be charged with 10 felonies: Four counts of first-degree homicide, two counts of first-degree arson and four counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony.

The Nebraska State Patrol said on Friday that Jones was transported to CHI St. Elizabeth in Lincoln because of serious burn injuries. It is unclear at this time when his first court hearing will be.

It’s been more than a century since tragedy struck the Northeast Nebraska town of 1,000 people, according to Brenda Whalen, a resident of Laurel.

According to Whalen, the last time murder that happened in Laurel was during a 1918 shootout.

“Hopefully that was that century’s big news and this is this century’s big news and it never happens again,” Whalen said.

Whalen, who grew up in Laurel, said she was first aware that something had happened in her hometown when the fire whistle blew at around 3:14 am on Thursday. However, she didn’t hear about the day’s events until around 7:30 am

“It hurts your heart that something like this can happen in your little town because it’s safe here,” Whalen said.

Whalen said that she felt reassured for her safety when she saw the number of law enforcement authorities and firefighters in town. But at the same time, it also alarmed her to see that many law enforcement personnel.

“It still just didn’t feel real,” Whalen said. “It felt like it wasn’t a real event that was really happening here. It just felt like you were in a movie. It’s very hard to comprehend that it even happened yet.”

John Bolduc, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, said in a news conference on Friday that more than 60 law enforcement officers were reportedly in town.

Whalen later found out that Jones had been arrested in connection to the quadruple homicide on Friday morning.

According to the state patrol, Jones lived across the street from one of the victims’ homes. He was later arrested at his residence, 206 Elm. St.

“It’s very shocking that the suspect could have been there across the street the whole entire day,” Whalen said, “while the police were present in the neighborhood.”

Whalen said that although she didn’t know Jones, she knew the victims well. She knew the Twifords from church, and Ebeling was a frequent customer in her store, Laurel’s Hometown Market.

“We are a very safe community, tight-knit community; we’ll make it through this,” Whalen said. “It’s not going to be over for a while. And I think learning more about what and why it happened will be helpful to help the community heal.”
