Australian singer Vanessa Amorosi appeared overcome with emotion and had to bow out of her live interview on Sunrise this morning, having only just learned of the death of Olivia Newton-John.

Amorosi was booked to appear on the program to discuss her new single, having just performed at the closing ceremony of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

But with Newton-John’s death aged 73 after a long cancer battle being the biggest news of the morning, Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch were keen to first ask Amorosi about her memories of the star.

“It is an incredibly sad day – Vanessa, what are your memories?” Barr asked as they crossed to the Aussie singer in Birmingham.

“Uh… I don’t know. I don’t particularly want to think about it, because I’ll get very emotional,” Amorosi began. “I just literally had one of the highest endorphins that just happened out there (at the closing ceremony), to being extremely sad coming offstage and checking my phone. I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet.”

Koch said he’d give Amorosi a chance to “compose” her thoughts about the late music legend, and changed tack to discuss her Commonwealth Games performance and new single.

A few minutes later, and with the interview nearing its end, the hosts moved the topic of conversation back to Olivia Newton-John.

“We know it’s a sad day for you and so many people, but we wanted to show this photo from quite a few years ago of you, Olivia Newton-John and Tina Arena,” Barr said, as a photo of the three Aussie singers at the Sydney 2000 Olympics appeared on screen.

“Can you talk us through those memories, that time, Vanessa?”
Amorosi gave it her best – but soon became overcome with emotion.

“Both of these women I have looked up to since (I was) a kid… I don’t know. I’m actually very sad about Olivia, to be honest. It’s..”

With that, she bowed her head and raised her hand, signaling the interview to stop.

Barr and Koch thanked her for her time – and Barr noted how hard it must’ve been to learn the news between a live performance and a live TV interview.

“I’m horrible. I feel for her, after coming off that.”

It’s been an emotional morning on breakfast television as friends, colleagues and fans of Newton-John have reacted to the news of her death in real time, after it broke at around 5:30am AEST.

Over on Nine, veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins at first held it together as he reported the sad news on Today – but later in the morning, he was overcome with emotion, sobbing as host Karl Stefanovic rushed to comfort him.

And back on Sunriseanother emotional live interview, this time on the streets of Los Angeles with Grease casting director Joel Thurm, who wept openly as he described his fond memories of Newton-John.

The British-born, Melbourne-raised entertainer had waged a decades-long battle against cancer, which returned again in 2013.

In May 2017, she announced her breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her sacrum, and in 2018, it was revealed she was again battling the disease.

In October last year, Newton-John revealed that she was battling Stage 4 breast cancer but was managing the pain with medical marijuana.

Then today came the news fans had been fearing for years: Newton-John had died at her Southern Californian ranch, surrounded by loved ones, including her husband, John Easterling, and daughter, Chloe Lattanzi.

Chloe has today paid tribute to her late mum on social media – who she just days ago referred to as her “best friend.”

A shopper has revealed how she felt ‘grateful’ and ‘mortified’ when a supermarket worker offered to paid for her groceries at the checkout.

The mother, who was carrying her newborn while she was shopping at a Melbourne Woolworths, and had to go to a service desk because of a technical issue she was having with the self-checkout.

Struggling with moving her crying baby and the trolley, a Woolies staff member offered to pay for her groceries in light of the inconvenience.

Social media users debated whether the worker was just being nice or if they were up to something ‘dodgy’.

She explained the details of the strange transaction in a post to Reddit last Thursday and asked other shoppers if they felt it was a ‘dodgy’ thing to do?

‘I just got back from Woolworths where I tried to pay with my phone on self checkout,’ the mother wrote.

‘It wasn’t working so they printed me a barcode and took me to the service desk to pay, but my phone payment still didn’t work.

‘After trying a few times and my newborn kicking off, the staff member said, don’t worry it’s on me.’

The mother said she was ‘really taken back’ by the generous offer and asked the worker if she could transfer her the money.

She claimed the employee declined the offer and responded and insisted it was no problem.

‘I was so grateful and also mortified,’ the mother said.

She questioned whether Woolworths staff members can pay for customers groceries legally or if it was ‘dodgy’.

‘I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but don’t want to get her in trouble if she’s done something she’s not supposed to have done,’ she added.

Respondents in the Reddit post largely agreed that the woman should be thankful for the kind gesture and not bring attention to it at the store in case the staff member gets into trouble.

‘Maybe accept the kindness shown and pay it forward to someone else in need. In that way, you don’t risk getting the staff member in trouble,’ one commenter said.

Another person wrote: ‘Yeah, don’t go back and thank her manager and unwittingly have her fired. It’s a good intention that may backfire. Instead, next time you see her, thank her yourself.’

A third added: ‘What’s more likely? They risk being sacked or even arrested for a total stranger, or pays a few bucks to help out someone obviously trying their best but struggling.’

Others disagreed with the act and claimed the employee likely voided the transaction.

‘She wouldn’t have paid. Technically, it’s not the right thing to do but also Woolies wouldn’t risk the bad PR of firing an employee over helping someone with a screaming baby,’ said one.

‘Yeah that transaction 100% got voided. More than likely she just wanted that screaming baby out of the store ASAP because parents never try and quieten them, ‘she wrote her a second.

A handful of commenters revealed they had personally paid for other shopper’s groceries before usually because of a technical issue or the customer struggled to afford it.

Melbourne defender Jake Lever expects the Demons to address a worrying trend of blowing strong starts after Friday night’s fadeout loss to Collingwood.

The reigning premier has lost three of its past five matches – to Geelong, Western Bulldogs and the Magpies –Despite leading two of those by about four goals in the first half and the other by 11 points early.

Melbourne dominated Collingwood in inside 50s, clearances and center clearances, especially in the opening two quarters, but never led by more than 23 points and was run down in a seven-goals-to-three second half.

The Demons also coughed up match-winning advantages in defeats to Fremantle, Sydney and the Magpies in rounds 11 to 13, so it’s not a new problem.

“We’re very disappointed that we lost (on Friday night). I was extremely disappointed the next day – probably as flat as I’ve been after a game,” Lever said.

“I thought that we played some good footy in the first half and it has been a little bit of a trend at the minute of us starting well and then not being able to finish.

“I’m sure we’ll touch on it but we’re pretty disappointed. But to Collingwood’s credit, they just found a way.”

Lever suggested the unenviable record might owe to Melbourne falling into a bad habit of thinking more about the result than the process as they try to lock in a top-four berth in the next fortnight.

“We didn’t take our chances and we’re sitting here without the four points and we’ve got a pretty important couple of weeks coming up,” he said.

“It’s obviously pretty important (to make the top four) – I think history suggests that. But the good thing is it’s kind of in our own hands now.

“I haven’t done the maths, but I think that if we win the next two, we probably finish top four, so that’s super important for us.”

The Demons face Carlton (MCG) and Brisbane (Gabba) in the final two rounds, with the Blues’ two-headed forward monster of Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay presenting a significant challenge.

But Lever said it was an “exciting” opportunity for he and his fellow defenders, particularly after the Pies’ hectic ball movement brought them unstuck last week.

“You look at their names up there and they’ve got some serious talent,” he said.

“I think Charlie’s kicked 60 goals this year, and Harry wouldn’t be far behind, so we know that they’ve got a lot of scoring power up there.

“But, for us, and especially with guys like Steven May, ‘Hibbo’ (Michael Hibberd) and Harry Petty, they thrive off that sort of stuff… we’ll be looking forward to the challenge.”

Carolina had previously hinted at the end of their relationship, writing on Instagram: “Smile and no one will see how broken you are inside.”

Earlier on Monday night, Olivia and Jackson announced they were breaking up too.

“After a wonderful 10 months together we have decided to go our separate ways,” they said.

“There has always been a lot of love in our relationship and there will continue to be as we transition into a friendship.

“We have nothing but love and respect for one another, and no one is to blame for the end of this relationship. Simply a case of ‘almost perfect’.

“We hope you all can please show compassion as we navigate this privately.”

The pair were last seen together on Saturday as they attended a friend’s party, and they seemed to be getting their relationship back on track.

Olivia, 28, had taken a five-week trip to the UK after they hit the rocks when Jackson was seen getting close to another woman in Melbourne in May.

Good Samaritans thanked by Melbourne mother after stepping in during roadside toddler seizure

The mother who pulled her unconscious son from a car and cradled him on a busy north-west Melbourne roadside has been reunited with the good Samaritan couple who rushed to help her.

Madeleine Crawford, and 20-month-old Stirling, met Thi and Cindy Le of North Sunshine at an emotional weekend reunion.

It was the first time they had come together since Ms Crawford put out a call to find them so she could finally say thank you.

Suffering a fever, chesty cough and struggling to breathe, Stirling was being driven by Ms Crawford to the Royal Children’s Hospital emergency department on August 3 when he started having a seizure in the back seat.

A clean bill of health

Desperate for help, Ms Crawford pulled over on the corner of Churchill Avenue and Ballarat Road in Maidstone, grabbed Stirling from the back seat, and stepped onto the median strip.

Ms Le and her husband had been driving only a few vehicles behind and did not hesitate after spotting Ms Crawford gesturing wildly at passing traffic.

“I immediately knew something was wrong,” she said.

“I didn’t know what else to do so I told Madeleine I’d hold baby Stirling while she drives to the closest hospital.

“Thankfully my husband was a quick thinker and drove in front with hazard lights on to escort us to the hospital safely.”

They made it to Footscray Hospital where Ms Crawford ran inside and Stirling was immediately triaged by the nurses.

Reunited via radio

There was no time to exchange details.

Ms Le said when the pair arrived home, she could not stop thinking about what had happened.

“As a mother myself, I knew how distressing it would’ve been to have experienced that,” she said.

“But I would never have thought Madeleine would try to find us. I just did what I could at the time to help.”

Both families were reunited on Sunday after Ms Crawford put out the call to find them via ABC Radio Melbourne.

“It was incredible to be able to express our gratitude in person,” Ms Crawford said.

“It was a very special afternoon — lots of hugs and smiles.”

A clean bill of health

Stirling was diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus but has since been issued a clean bill of health.

Ms Crawford said it was his seizure that had caught her off guard and urged other parents to learn how to respond to a similar situation.

In a twist, the Le family revealed their own granddaughter, Aria, had been through a similar experience only months ago.

Their daughter, Anita, had phoned them for help after her sick toddler started having a seizure.

According to the Victorian government, about one in every 20 children between six months and six years old will experience a febrile seizure while suffering a high fever. While alarming, it is not epilepsy and it does not cause brain damage.

“It is absolutely terrifying if it happens to your child,” Ms Crawford said.

“I would recommend parents read the guidance so they can be as prepared as they can if or when it happens.”

The Melbourne woman explained she was having technical issues while paying for her groceries during a recent trip to the supermarket.

At the same time, her newborn baby was “kicking off”, prompting a Woolworths worker to step in and pay for the woman’s groceries.

The customer took to Reddit to explain that while she was very “grateful”, she was also “mortified” over the experience – and wanted to see if there was a way she could thank the woman without getting her in trouble.

The encounter left the woman asking questions about the Woolies staff member was allowed to do this or if it was “dodgy”.

“I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but don’t want to get her in trouble if she’s done something she’s not supposed to have done,” she said.

“Anyone work at Woolworths and can tell me what the deal is?”

People were quick to tell the woman to leave it and not draw attention to the worker’s actions.

“Maybe accept the kindness shown and pay it forward to someone else in need. In that way, you don’t risk getting the staff member in trouble,” one person said.

A third, who works at a different supermarket, said: “I’ve paid the difference for a few people that have come up short a couple of times and as far as I’m aware that is completely fine, even seen my boss do Item.

“Don’t know why it would be any different at Woolies. Sounds like excellent customer service to me.”

Another added: “I work at Woolworths, the company only cares if the products are paid for. She likely paid out of her own pocket for you, I’ve done it before.”

Whether it’s near you or in your peripheral vision it’s an act that happens unfortunately all too often.

The latest traveler to be confronted by another flyer’s feet was Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall – and she was so shocked by what she had witnessed on a flight, she recorded a TikTok and shared it with her 1.9 million TikTok followers to also feel her pain.

“Breathtaking views at 38,000 – feet,” she British singer captioned the video.

Jade filmed herself looking stunned before flipping the phone to show a woman a few rows in front with her leg stretched so high, her foot was touching the overhead locker.

In the two days since she posted it, it has already clocked almost five million views and over 13,000 comments with many grossed out by the act.

“I’d be screaming if I’d seen this,” one person wrote.

“I want to cry,” said another, while a third yelled: “WHY DID SHE START POINTING THEM?”

One user described it as “absolutely foul”.

“People are so wrong on a plane – morals, manners and politeness go out the window.”

Others were more concerned for Jade.

“I hope you are OK after experiencing this Jade,” one person joked, to which the star responded: “A little rattled but I’m OK hun.”

“Imagine you did this in a plane and ended up on Jade Thirlwall’s TikTok,” another said.

A cabin crew member also chimed in saying it is her “greatest fear”.

“’Madam, please may you remove your toes from the ceiling?’” she joked.

Others complimented the woman on her manicured toes while some wished they were “that flexible”.

“I’d be p**sing myself trying not to laugh,” one user added.

Some couldn’t believe the man sitting next to her was completely unfazed.

“The fact the person next to them is talking to them like this is a normal occurrence,” they wrote.

However, as much as the passenger’s foot act was the center of attention, fans also couldn’t help but applaud the singer for sitting in economy, particularly given her popular and successful British band Little Mix has a net worth of £48 million ($ A83 million), according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2020.

“Humble queen not flying private,” one fan commented.

“Imagine being on the same plane as Jade Thirlwall,” another wrote.

It is unclear where Jade was flying to or from, but it comes after she had her phone stolen in Ibiza.

“Shoutout to whoever stole my phone. Not having one for a little while was truly bliss. Anyways, here’s me being a basic b**ch in Ibiza a cutla weeks ago,” she said in an Instagram post alongside a selfie on the party island.

It appears Jade is no stranger to flying on commercial flights.

“I was sat next to her in the airport and didn’t want to bother her for a pic. Regretted it ever since,” one fan wrote.

As for the bare feet, it’s also not the first time something like this has happened.

In May, a passenger was left horrified when another flyer shoved their bare feet onto their seat’s armrest during a flight.

California-based podiatrist Ebonie Vincent, who is also behind the US TV series, My Feet Are Killing Mesaid that being barefoot leaves travelers exposed to bad bacteria.

Melbourne real estate: Couple mocked for impulse buying $1.5m terrace

A young Melbourne couple have been roasted online after “impulse buying” a $1.5 million East Brunswick terrace at auction.

But the agent who sold the property has now spoken out, saying the backlash from “keyboard warriors” is unfair and that the sale has been misrepresented.

Property website Domain published an article on Saturday about the young buyers of 110 Barkly Street, which sold under the hammer after the couple pipped another bidder for just $500.

Darcy and Tessa, who declined to give their last names, ultimately paid $1,500,500 for the deceased estate, which went to auction with a price guide of $1.3 million to $1.43 million.

“To be honest we weren’t really looking, we were just looking casually and this one popped up,” Tessa told Domain.

Darcy added, “There’s a bit of concern around with what housing prices are doing but this one really stood out to us, and it turned out we got it.”

The couple said they planned to fix up the terrace and rent it out in the short term before moving in later and doing further renovation.

Darcy said while interest rate rises were “certainly something to consider”, the couple were “in a good position with renting it out at this point”.

“From our point of view we can pass that on to the rental market,” he said.

The article went viral on Reddit after a user on the Melbourne forum posted a screenshot of the headline.

“I guess I don’t feel so bad about impulse buying a Snickers at the Coles checkout now,” they wrote.

“I mean we’ve all been there, right? Just wandering down the street to get coffee or something, you’ve got $1.5 million burning a hole in your pocket and you stumble across an auction – damn it! Did I really just buy a house again? Man my wife is going to give me a hard time about this when I get back.”

One person replied, “I genuinely know two people who have done this. One whilst driving past on the way to visit a friend (investment property in Footscray), and the other whose husband came home and announced he’d bought a new family home. WTF.”

Another wrote, “Joke’s on them, be at least $500,000 less in about six months.”

Ray White Glenroy auctioneer Stefan Stella told news.com.au on Monday he felt the reaction from “keyboard warriors” online had been “pretty harsh”.

“As much as it said they weren’t really looking, they did see it on the first open, came multiple times – they were there three times,” he said.

“In my opinion they were probably always going to get it. The underbidder only saw it in the last week. I think what they may have meant was they weren’t actively looking and religiously out there every Saturday, that’s potentially the message they were trying to get across.”

It comes after the Reserve Bank hiked interest rates for the fourth month in a row last week.

The 50 basis-point increase at the central bank’s August meeting brings the official cash rate to 1.85 per cent, up from the record low 0.1 per cent it was up until May.

Already, the rise in interest rates has pushed house prices down in most major cities as borrowers stare down the barrel of higher monthly payments.

PropTrack’s Home Price Index shows a national decline of 1.66 per cent in prices since March, but some regions have seen much sharper falls.

“As repayments become more expensive with rising interest rates, housing affordability will decline, prices pushing further down,” PropTrack senior economist Eleanor Creagh said.

Chief instructor Ant Middleton said that despite being one of Australia’s most celebrated football players, Wayne had left behind a ‘trail of destruction’.

Wayne detailed his 2002 affair with Kelli Stevens, the wife of his then-teammate Anthony Stevens.

His revelation left Ant, 41, shocked, as Wayne said: ‘It’s haunted me for over 20 years. I was in self-destruction mode. You know, I guess my life started to unravel.’

The sports star was married to Sally McMahon at the time, and Anthony had even acted as a groomsman at their wedding just a year earlier.

It comes after Wayne admitted to mental intimidation in his past relationships during his appearance on SAS Australia in February

Wayne later issued a public apology to his former best friend in 2016, insisting the affair had been a one-night only event.

Following the highly publicized affair, he left his football club and struck up a relationship with model Kate Neilson, who he later proposed to, and things turned from bad to worse.

He was arrested and charged by Miami police during a holiday with Kate after she alleged that Wayne had smashed a wine glass on her face during dinner, cutting her mouth and neck.

‘In America, I’ve been charged with assaulting police. I got accused of glassing my girlfriend,’ he told Ant.

‘I went over to throw wine on her in a restaurant, which is clearly wrong. The glass touched her lip, the headlines were that I glassed her.’

Seemingly not convinced by Wayne’s version of events, a cynical Ant asked him: ‘What the f**k are you playing at? What went through your head?’

Wayne said that the incident was ‘one of the biggest regrets of my life’, but insisted the glass had only ‘touched her lip’.

‘[It] didn’t break. I wasn’t trying to glass her,’ he said.

Ant then asked Wayne if he was ‘an aggressive person’.

‘All my partners will say I’ve never been physically abusive, but have I been mentally abusive and also, I guess, intimidating? Absolutely,’ Wayne said.

Added Ant: ‘You have this f**king attitude, “I’m the world’s greatest footballer, I do what the f**k I want.”‘

But Wayne said Ant’s assessment of him wasn’t true, and his bad behavior was ‘due to a number of reasons’.

‘Actually being physically violent to someone, I saw that everyday growing up… Horrific stuff,’ he said.

‘And that’s why when people close to me said, “That is unacceptable,” I’d say, “What do you mean? I raised my voice, I stood up. You know, I put my arm on her.”‘

He added: ‘I now know how warped my thinking was. You don’t actually have to hit someone to be abusive.’

Western Bulldogs star Bailey Smith has confirmed his affair with girlfriend Gemma Dawkins.

The couple, who first sparked romance rumors back in May, looked loved-up when they were spotted holding hands in Melbourne on Sunday.

Bailey, 21, cut a casual figure in a white graphic print T-shirt, lose-fit jeans and black sneakers as the couple took his dog for a walk.

‘It’s funny. My girlfriend’s dad drives past it every day,’ Smith revealed.

‘I try not to. I just focus on my footy, because that’s what comes first, and all those other rewards with Cotton On and [energy drink] Monster come after that.
