HasanAbi has “given up” his Twitch intellectual property completely

Famous Twitch streamer HasanAbi recently spoke about a phenomenon that shouldn’t be unfamiliar to creative types — people stealing his work and republishing it for monetization purposes.

Oftentimes, especially on digital platforms, creators who publish a completed work (be it art, video, music, and so on) will find it being shared around publicly, and if possible, without watermarks or references to the original creator.

This type of plagiarism is common online, and Hasan is no different from other content creators in that regard.

What does make him different, however, is his stance on the matter: he wants them to monetize his content.

Speaking on-stream, he said “I f*****g ride for all of my fan channels. YouTube took down a bunch of the fan channels including Daily Dose of HasanAbi and stopped monetizing them.”

“I want them to do whatever the f**k they want. I don’t mind their existence, I encourage it. I have basically given up my intellectual property completely.”

The only request he has of these fan channels is that they provide links to his channels, such as his Twitter, Instagram, and Twitch.

HasanAbi is one of the top streamers on Twitch, producing content that is more politics-oriented for average crowds of 30,000 daily.

Primarily focusing on American politics, HasanAbi’s category as a “Just Chatting” streamer marks him as one of the most popular non-video games-related channels on Twitch.

Twitch streamers often will issue take-down requests against channels that use their content without permission — especially if channels began monetizing content that isn’t theirs. HasanAbi is possibly the largest streamer to state publicly that anyone can use his content from him as they wish, as long as they provide links back to his channels from him.

HasanAbi recently began criticizing the uprising of Slots on Twitch, including the grimy practices of major cryptocurrency casinos paying top streamers to stream their gambling habits.

This exposes a large portion of the Twitch population (40% of which are aged 16-24) to gambling and other predatory practices. Crypto gambling is currently illegal in the United States, and Twitch has stated that they are investigating the category for potential regulation.

Activision Blizzard’s mobile revenue rises above console and PC says financial report

Activision Blizzard, previously known for its high-profile console and PC games, is now primarily a mobile game publisher. Recent success Diablo Immortal combined with Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile helped the mobile earnings reach 51% of total revenue for Q2 2022.

Most gamers do not think about Activision Blizzard as a mobile company. Hearthstone and Candy Crush have been popular mobile games for several years, and Call of Duty Mobile made a huge splash when it launched, with a total of nearly 88 million downloads in the first month of its release.

Activision Blizzard used to be known only for PC and console games — primarily Call of Duty, Starcraft, and World of Warcraft. It’s been a rough year for the company overall: in addition to the numerous ongoing cases against the company regarding sexual harassment and abuse, as well as the furore surrounding its massive buyout by Microsoft, to the tune of nearly 100 billion AUD.

In Q2 2022, Activision Blizzard’s mobile games generated approximately $1.2 billion AUD, accounting for 51% of the company’s total quarterly earnings. Console games comparatively made only $540 million AUD, and PC games took in just shy of $500 million AUD. In the mobile games section, the biggest winner was King, with 82% of all mobile revenue profit at just shy of $1 billion AUD.

Embattled Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick had this to say during the earnings report: “In addition, we expect to continue to deliver ongoing content for various of our franchises. We will also continue to invest in opportunities that we believe have the potential to drive our growth over the long term, including continuing to build on our advertising initiatives and investments in mobile titles.

Activision Blizzard is facing no shortage of troubles despite this massive growth. The company is accused of anti-union behavior towards one of its studies, hiring union-busting firms in the process. Activision Blizzard also recently scrapped a World of Warcraft mobile game after some financial disagreements with its Chinese partner, NetEase.

Square Enix afraid Western studios “cannibalised” Japanese game sales

The latest round of financial results have come out for publisher Square Enix, and they show some very interesting numbers. The internal conference call that concerned the financial report, however, revealed that potentially more Western studios are about to be up for sale.

The financial results detail that despite slowing growth in Square Enix’s single-player game sales, mega-popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is not only exceeding projections but keeping the company from dipping into the red.

Square Enix recently sold off several Western studios, such as Eidos and Crystal Dynamics, for a pittance of only $432 million AUD. According to the analyst David Gibson, that was only ‘phase one’ of a two-phase plan. This series of planned sales are intended to “diversify studio capital structure,” — in layman’s terms, due to development costs skyrocketing as a result of various global events, Square Enix needs to be picky with what resources it spends.

As Square Enix is a Japanese publisher, this likely means that the company will focus on divvying up resources towards Japanese developers and games, putting Western studios on the proverbial chopping block — all in the name of maximizing capital efficiency.

This comes at a good time for other companies as well. Sony and Tencent, huge video game companies, are looking to expand their footprint. For years, fans have wondered if Square Enix would be bought out by Sony, owing to the company’s flagship series of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy history with the company. As of the writing of this article, Square Enix’s stock prices hiked up 9% as a result of the announcement, showing a good short-term outlook for the company.

Square Enix is relying heavily on Final Fantasy 14, a social and combat-oriented massively multiplayer online game, to buoy its revenue streams. The game is so popular that in-game nightclub owners rented real billboards to advertise their DJ parties. Final Fantasy is such a popular series even that older games, such as Final Fantasy X, are being granted stage show adaptations in Japan.

Previewing Vantage, Apex Legends’ first sniper character

With Vantage, Apex Legends’ newest character, the development team at Respawn wanted to really push the unique feel of a sniper-focused Legend — someone who can down another player at an unbelievable range. To accomplish this, Respawn decided on giving her an ultra powerful rifle, not unlike the Kraber special weapon.

Bit of a problem with that though — Krabers are supposed to be ultra-rare in addition to being ultra-powerful. Krabers are so rare, it’s unlikely you’ll see more than one per match. If every Vantage had a Kraber, and every team had a Vantage, you’d see 20 Krabers floating around the map. The game would be unplayable unless you also played Vantage.

“One of the things the Kraber also has is potentially no warning,” Vantage lead designer Chris Winder said. “You could just be sitting somewhere, looking in a direction, and then be down. Or, if it’s a body shot, that’s quite a lot of damage. So we knew we had to do something about that.”

To facilitate some sense of fairness, the team experimented with a lot of different options. One attempt gave enemy players a voice line letting them know they were in a Vantage’s crosshairs. Another forced Vantage to require a lock-on before being able to fire.

“We tried a bunch of different mechanics around trying to communicate that ahead of time and give players a way to avoid that, or potentially mitigate that after the fact,” Winder explained. “Maybe it still does a lot of damage, but there’s a way to stop some of it after you’re hit in some way.”

Despite these attempts, nothing felt fair enough to non-Vantage players. So they decided to switch things up — what if Vantage’s sniper rifles could only debuff enemies with slows, stuns or snares?

“You could imagine the debuffs we have, like slows and silences, and things like that, that we could try,” Winder says. “It could just debuff those targets and do some minimal amount of damage, but really just be about the debuff, and that’s the purpose of the Ultimate. I think some of those things worked from a gameplay standpoint – there was a loop around using it, and you understood why and your team understood what to do when those shots happened. But the thing we weren’t hitting at that point was the sniper fantasy. It didn’t really feel like you were holding a sniper rifle – it felt like you were holding a debuff gun.”

Heading back to the drawing board, the team struck what they feel is gold. Vantage’s current kit features the Ultimate ability ‘Sniper’s Mark’, which allows her to pull out a custom-built Sentinel rifle, fitted with a 3x/5x scope. Instead of waiting for full charges while scoped in, Sniper’s Mark has an ammo counter that counts up from one to five, letting the player choose when to fire. There is also a visual indicator on the scope that accounts for bullet drop, helping players aim this ultra-powerful weapon.

Sniper’s Mark deals 50 damage for a body shot, but any follow-ups that connect deal 100 damage, regardless of where you hit. The weapon also can benefit from headshot multipliers and Rampart shields.

“The idea is that the first shot does some lower amount of damage – and we played around a lot with that number or what that initial damage should be – and that second shot is where you get that larger amount of damage,” Winder explains. “And again, we played around with that number.”

Practiced players will be able to capitalize on the first shot, but the way the damage works out allows players on the receiving end to respond, either via counter-attack or sliding out of danger. That may seem frustrating to people wanting to pick up Vantage, but don’t worry — Sniper’s Mark has a few tricks to it than just solid damage.

Anyone tagged by a shot from Sniper’s Mark will be, well, ‘marked.’ It’s not a visually obvious ping like Bloodhound’s scan, but it is apparent enough to let your teammates know who to focus fire. Any shots landed from your teammates on the tagged enemy will deal 15% more damage — encouraging pushing as a team.

Vantage as a whole seems designed for pushing and aggressive play when you examine the rest of her kit. Her de ella Tactical ability, ‘Echo Relocation’, allows her to position her bat friend anywhere on the battlefield. So long as she maintains line-of-sight to Echo, she can soar to their location of her. Vantage can also cancel the relocation or double jump off the end of it. This opens up lots of new possibilities for aggressive and guerilla tactics—hit and runs, flanks, and straight-up dogpiling onto opponents.

Her passive, Spotter’s Lens, allows her to view detailed data on enemy shields — rarity, team size and range. Vantage can then share that info with her teammates, allowing calculations on when exactly to push to be run a little more effectively.

“The original goal was really around encouraging long-range engagements,” Winder says. “Can we make a character who’s based purely around long-range? So the first versions of the kit didn’t have any movement, there was no Echo, there was no movement tactical. You can end up too far from your team, or getting to high ground to make those shots can be a chore.

“Catching up or closing on a team when you have done those first few shots of damage is really difficult if you don’t have a character on your team that can help you do that. So that created that need to solve this problem, and Echo was it.”

Season 14 is titled ‘Hunted’, and with Vantage and Ash, we can see why. With a built-in enemy scan passive alongside Ash’s passive letting them know where death boxes are, we predict that this is going to be a very aggressive season in Apex Legends. Combined with the whole host of changes to King’s Canyon making areas more tight fit and close-quarters, as well as laser sight attachments announced for several close to mid range weapons.

So who does the development team see working well with Vantage? They have some thoughts on team composition: “A Rampart setting up some shields for her to shoot through to amp that damage even further,” Winder says. “Ash is a good one, as you mentioned, or any other movement Legend – Octane with the jump pad or Pathfinder with his grapple and the zip line itself. As she is now, she doesn’t really need the mobility from other legends to get there. But the fact that those legends have the mobility to pounce on a team, those are going to be good combinations.”

With such aggressive kits, however, there will be a need to compensate. Shield-based and mobility-based Legends can also isolate and take out a Vantage easily, and we’ll definitely see a rise of shield Legends this season. In internal playtesting, the dev team already spotted some fantastic Vantage plays — taking out Octane while he’s soaring through the air, or popping enemies off of ziplines from a distance.

“I think that most impressive are the ones where they’re very deliberate in the flanking,” design director Evan Nikolich explains. “Like, you get suppressed, then you lose track of Echo, and then all of a sudden you’re getting shot. It’s like, ‘Oh no, I have to reposition.’ So it’s like learning that new skill of knowing where Vantage is on the field. Now I have to respect her, but also where Echo is – where she could possibly be coming from. So yeah, some high-skill plays there.”

Apex Legends Season 14 hits the field August 9 — check out our hub article for every detail.

World of Warcraft developers scrap mobile game

Activision Blizzard scrapped a mobile MMO (massively multiplayer online) game based in the World of Warcraft universe over a financial dispute with partner NetEase, a Chinese game development company.

Speaking to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, an insider revealed how both Activision Blizzard and NetEase disagreed over terms, eventually halting production on the mobile title. Codenamed Jupiter, the game had been in development for over three years.

Project Jupiter was intended to be an MMORPG in the same universe as World of Warcraft, albeit in a different time period. When reached for comments, both NetEase and Activision Blizzard declined to comment.

Activision Blizzard’s foray into the mobile market is relatively new — despite success with Hearthstone, a mobile card battler that achieved huge milestones in player count and revenue earned, other attempts at breaking into mobile games fell flat. Another Warcraft mobile game, which drew inspiration from Pokemon Go and was codenamed Orbis, was canceled after a four-year development period.

Their most recent attempt, which was announced in May, will see a release sometime later this year. Named Warcraft Arclight Rumble, the game features gameplay similar to Clash Royale, where players place units strategically as they march on enemy territory.

World of Warcraft was released in China under NetEase’s watch, being the sole distributor of the game since its launch in 2009. However, as a result of project Jupiter being scrapped, NetEase laid off more than 100 employees. Only a handful will be internally shifted to other projects, with some likely heading over to work on the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Dragonflight.

This is yet another bump in the road for Activision Blizzard, which is awaiting the fate of its massive Microsoft buyout deal. The deal is so huge that rival company Sony sees no way to compete with its flagship title Call of Duty. Despite these claims, however, Call of Duty is seeing a sharp decline in users — the series has lost over 30 million users in the past year.

EA confirms commitment to single-player and live-service games

Electronic Arts, publisher of popular series like FIFA, Dead Space, and Apex Legends, restated its commitment to developing and publishing single-player games, despite previous comments and financial reports that show a greater profit from live-service games.

Live-service games refer to games that have an online component of some kind, receiving regular updates through patches and content drops. Examples of live-service games would be Apex Legends and FIFA, which both feature online game modes and microtransactions.

EA has, in the past, shown disdain for single-player games. In 2017, EA shuttered Visceral Games, the studio behind the popular horror shooter Dead Space, as well as canceling a single-player Star Wars title. The reasoning? EA believed that single-player games were not as popular as live-service games. As reported originally by gaming site Dualshockers, they stated of linear games: “people don’t like [them] as much today as they did five years ago or ten years ago.”

On a recent call with shareholders and investors, CEO Andrew Wilson had this to say about single-player games: “When we think about our portfolio and we think about building it out, we really think about it on two key vectors. One, how can we tell incredible stories and two, how can we build tremendous online communities and then how do we bring those two together.”

In a follow-up financial report, EA reported that over 70% of the company’s profits come from live service games. Their net income for the past quarter of this fiscal year is approximately $450 million AUD, a growth of nearly 50% over last year’s earnings.

EA’s heavy hitters in this space are FIFA, including FIFA Ultimate Team with an engagement growth of 40%, and FIFA Mobile. “Our FIFA franchise and the successful launch of F1 drove our net bookings outperformance, delivering another quarter ahead of expectations,” CFO Chris Suh stated.

EA has plenty of reasons to celebrate, however — in addition to signing a $45m deal with LaLiga, Spain’s premier Football League, the company is also preparing for a collaboration with Marvel in their upcoming FIFA 23.

Apex Legends adds laser sight attachments for SMGs, pistols

If you’ve played Apex Legends for any length of time in the past, you’re probably well aware of how dominant shotguns and SMGs were in the meta. Over time, however, the map began to grow, leading players to start using mid and long-range weapons, such as sniper rifles and assault rifles, leaving many to wonder why anyone would use an SMG if they didn’t have to.

That’s fixing to change with the new season. In Season 14: Hunted, new attachments for SMGs and pistols are on their way. This attachment, a laser sight, will reduce bullet spread when players fire from the hip — which is the intended way to use such short-range weapons. These laser sights will replace the barrel stabilizer in-game for the barrel attachment slot.

For colourblind players or players that like to change things up, you’re able to change the color of the laser pointer in your game settings. A welcome inclusion, as I can’t imagine light red against green grass is easily visible in the heat of battle.

In addition to this change, Kings Canyon has been reworked heavily. New areas, new routes, new points of interest and more were designed to encourage close-range combat and shift away from the sniper and rifle-heavy meta of previous seasons.

The new Season starts off August 10th, featuring plenty of changes alongside a new Legend — Vantage. We’ll have plenty of info about her in future articles.

Be sure to hit up our Apex Legends – Season 14 hub for more on the new Season: Hunted.

Street Fighter developer breaks sales milestones with multiple titles

Capcom, the developer and publisher of several popular titles like Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, and Resident Evil, recently updated its list of “Platinum Titles” — titles that have sold over one million copies. These numbers are recent as of June 30, 2022.

While Capcom publishes regular updates to its Platinum Titles, several of the updates included in the recent filing include huge milestones for popular titles, such as Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village.

Here is a list of the biggest updates:

• Monster Hunter Rise (Switch/PC) sold 10.3 million units, with an additional 1.3 million units since March 31.

• Devil May Cry 5 (PS4, Xbox One, PC) sold 5.7 million units, with an additional 700,000 since March 31.

• Resident Evil Village (PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, PC) sold over 6.4 million units, with an additional 300,000 since March 31.

• Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (PS4, Xbox One, PC) has sold over 9.5 million units, adding 300,000 since March 31.

• Resident Evil 3 (Remake) (PS4, Xbox One, PC) sold over 5.4 million units, adding only 200,000 since March 31.

• Resident Evil 2 (Remake) (PS4, Xbox One, PC) sold over 9.8 million units, adding only 200,000 since March 31.

• Resident Evil 7 biohazard (PS4, Xbox One, PC) broke the 11 million unit threshold, adding 200,000 sales since March 31.

• Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS4, Xbox One, PC) finally entered the Platinum Title list, selling over 1.1 million copies.

While it shows that Resident Evil 2 (Remake) reached 9.8 million units, in the month since June 30, it was confirmed that the title pushed over the 10 million copies sold hurdle.

While these numbers are fantastic for Capcom’s game division, not everything is sunshine and roses. Resident Evil fans are not happy about the recent Netflix series that launched a few weeks ago, as it only tangentially relates to the existing franchise. Capcom is also set to reveal new information about its upcoming fighter, Street Fighter 6, at this weekend’s fighting game world championship Evo.

Gamer maximizes productivity by turning their toilet into a PC

A gamer has turned their fully functional toilet into a fully functional computer. Posted on Micro Center’s website (a website for computer products,) the build features pictures of the functional computer being water-cooled by toilet water, with the favorite feature being “it flushes poop.”

If you’ve ever wished you could relieve yourself while sniping in Apex Legends, but like, in a normal way, gamer Nicholas Z has you covered. Posting a build on Micro Center’s website, the working toilet/computer hybrid will help users game and poop at the same time — but it requires no small amount of plumbing knowledge.

The build features an Intel Core i7 Alder Lake processor, an RTX 3060, and 64 GB of RAM, making this a pretty powerful rig. In the pictures, Nicholas states that users can enjoy “pooping at 240 Hz”, and showcases the interior cooling capabilities.

“Steam Deck? I spit on the Steam Deck… I’m never getting a Steam Deck, ”he states in a video on his channel of him, Basically Homeless. “What about Nintendo Switch? I’ve been trying to learn the Luigi zero-to-death [combo in Smash Bros.] for like two years and it’s getting boring.”

“I want to do sweaty, try-hard FPS gaming from my toilet.” To accomplish this, Micro Center decided to sponsor the effort, supplying no shortage of high-end PC parts to make it happen.

To begin with, Nicholas needed to cut into a porcelain tank and replace a section of the front with glass epoxy to the porcelain — stating that “if you can’t see the PC parts it might as well not even be there.” He then separated the tank into halves — one half for flushing, and the other half for the PC parts. Tons of epoxy was used to seal everything, and for good reason: a single leak would burn out his prized throne from him.

After reassembling the toilet, discovering a leak, and layering a lot of flex-seal to hit any potential leak spots, the build was complete. You too can have a toilet computer, assuming you have around $3,000 AUD and a working knowledge of both plumbing and computer assembly.
