Open beta for MultiVersus attracts 10 million players and breaks records

MultiVersus, the platform fighter from Warner Bros. and Player First Games, has broken record after record, jumping from five million players to 10 million in only a few weeks.

The game is still in open beta and has only been available for a few weeks.

Fighting games tend to get a fair amount of love from fans and newcomers alike, but no fighting game has ever come close to the numbers MultiVersus is pulling.

In the span of only a handful of weeks, the game where you can fight LeBron James as Batman has shattered player count records yet again, as spotted by GamesRadar.

While there are plenty of fighting games that have enjoyed immense success, such as Tekken 7, Brawlhalla, and Guilty Gear -Strive-, none of those games had opening numbers like MultiVersus.

It’s plain to see that going free-to-play with such large IPs is paying off dividends. With a 24-average of more than 53,000 players, people seem to really enjoy the Smash Bros.-style of fighting game.

Future characters are already in the works, with Morty from Rick and Morty confirmed first.

Rumors of other characters, such as the Joker, Scooby-doo, Godzilla, and even Ted Lasso are most likely making their way to the game.

There are even more unconfirmed (and less likely) rumors of characters like the Powerpuff Girls, Scorpion, and Ben 10 floating around the internet, as well.

Despite the success, or perhaps as a result of it, director Tony Huynh stated that Season One of the game would be getting delayed to address some issues, including a “big overhaul” of characters’ hitboxes.

The game doesn’t have a new release date as of this writing, but the open beta has been extended indefinitely, so players can give the game a try.

Multiverse had a good showing at Evo, the largest fighting game tournament in the world, last weekend. Evo drew a massive crowd throughout the event, but especially during the MultiVersus tournament.

The event was so popular, that developers even teased new projects during the event.

Fan discovers secret in 28-year-old game Super Punch-Out!! for the Super Nintendo

A modder doing some “request work” on the 28-year-old Super Nintendo game ‘Super Punch-Out!!’ discovered some unknown cheat codes for the game, allowing players to manually select opponents and even allow a second player to control the AI.

Unlisted Cheats, which is a twitter-account specializing in “secrets nobody heard about until now,” discovered two additional cheat codes for Super Punch-Out!!, a Super Nintendo boxing game.

Previously, the only cheats known for the game included a sound test mode and a Japanese name input cheat.

Cheat codes, for the uninitiated, are a sequence of inputs via a controller that unlock bonuses or “cheats” for games.

These cheats ranged from the useful (extra lives, invincibility, and so on) to the hilarious (If your game doesn’t have Big Head Mode, you’re doing something wrong.)

Cheat codes were prevalent before the advent of the internet, but newer releases usually don’t have them anymore.

The first newly-discovered cheat unlocks a Mega Man-styled Stage Select screen, allowing the player to select any opponent from the game at will.

This cheat can be activated by holding R and Y on Controller 2, followed by pressing A or Start on Controller 1.

Once activated, the second cheat can be put in. Selecting a fighter of choice will bring you to their details page, which is where you can put the next sequence in. Hold down Controller 2’s B and Y buttons, followed by pressing A or Start on Controller 1. This allows the second controller to control the opponents, which are normally CPU-driven.

The codes were likely created as a way to “debug”, or discover and fix errors within the game, but users in the Twitter thread theorise that they could have been attempting to implement a two-player mode.

Eurogamer tested this sequence on the Nintendo Switch Online version of the game and found that it does work, and others have described the cheats working on the SNES Mini console as well.

Final Fantasy 14’s director Naoki Yoshida talks newest patch 6.2, Buried Memories

Smash hit MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 is getting a new patch soon with 6.2, named Buried Memories.

In 6.2, players will be able to challenge the next tier of Pandemonium bosses, experience new challenging four-player content in Variant Dungeons, and enjoy a life-sim game mode called Island Sanctuary.

A ton of details were talked about in the latest interview Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida conducted with Japanese gaming publication Famitsu. In the piece, Yoshida goes into deep detail about the major changes we can see coming to the game.

First up is the continuation of the raid storyline “Pandemonium.” Yoshida promises that the story will start to make sense with this tier, with players finally realizing what the dungeons were meant to hold. Yoshida goes on to state that the fights will be “quite challenging” even on normal difficulty.

Savage will unlock one week after the launch of 6.2, instead of the usual two-week delay.

Yoshida explains that there is some impact related to this change — item level, specifically, will be a factor in progressing through the tier.

The example given was that players will not be able to stockpile 900 Allagan Tomestones to purchase a stronger piece of gear before raid unlocks. That factored into their decision when it came time to adjust and readjust the difficulty level. The development team expects that there will be some complaints about the new “optimal” route to obtain gear, but they will look at all feedback when developing future patches.

Some Job adjustments will be coming, but they will be detailed later. Major renovations for Dragoon and Astrologians have been put off, with the originally intended changes to be related to the card mechanics (as always) for Astrologians.

They received a lot of complaints about gameplay being “influenced by luck”, so they are taking those comments into consideration.

Variant Dungeons are launching, and with it, a type of challenge similar in scale to Savage raids, but intended for small parties of four. The new dungeons will have branching paths, which is something that disappeared from level design in Final Fantasy XIV.

The reasoning behind this is that “veteran players will only take the optimal route,” but with the new dungeons Yoshida believes that groups can find value in taking suboptimal routes for the purposes of exploration or challenge.

Finally, Island Sanctuary gets mentioned. The development team wanted to avoid attaching a story to the Island because they felt that if they wrote a story for the side quest, it would force players to do it.

There are simply breadcrumb quests that will lead players around the tutorial areas, but afterwards, they will be on their own. The Island will expand with every patch, and the development team believes they have created the largest player-owned area in any MMORPG. The Island lacks any real connection to the events in Eorzea proper, and the Island is not intended to be a replacement for current housing options.

Yoshida states that he feels 6.2 is the most “omnidirectional” patch ever, such that all players can find something to enjoy in it. The size and scale of the development team continue to grow, and he hopes that you will enjoy everything 6.2 has to offer.

Patch 6.2 launches for all platforms later this month. If you’re curious as to what type of game has players renting real billboards to advertise in-game events, you can try a very lengthy free trial for the game.

Netflix subscribers aren’t playing Netflix games

Late last year, Netflix began rolling out a new service for subscribers called Netflix Games. Intended as a way to get users to stay subscribed between show releases, data shows that not many people are playing along at all.

Since the service rolled out, Netflix games have been downloaded at least 23 million times, retaining an average player base of 1.7 million.

That is less than 1% of Netflix’s total subscriber base of 221 million, meaning that the vast majority of Netflix subscribers just don’t care about their games.

Netflix as a business has been struggling recently — speaking to shareholders last year, the company stated that they were finding it tough to compete with Epic Games and TikTok for people’s attention.

The foray into the games business is intended to be a way to compete, but the reality is that growing into a new business takes time.

“We’re going to be experimental and try a bunch of things. But I would say the eyes that we have on the long-term prize really center more around our ability to create properties that are connected to the universes, the characters, the stories we’re building,” said Greg Peters, Netflix COO during an earnings conference call.

The Netflix games catalog currently holds 24 games, ranging from Stranger Things: 1984 to Into The Breach, with plans to expand the catalog to 50 by the end of 2022.

“We’re open to licensing and accessing large game IP that people will recognise, and I think you will see some of that happen over the year to come,” Peters said.

Netflix’s push into games required some big spending, however. Recent acquisitions, such as the purchasing of Next Games, cost Netflix approximately $100 million AUD.

To that end, Netflix continues to express that this is more of an experimental test project and that the company isn’t pushing games for no reason.

“We’ve got to please our members by having the absolute best in the category,” said co-CEO Reed Hastings. “There’s no point of just being in it.”

You will have plenty of time to try some of Netflix’s games out, however. The Witcher Season 3 paused production due to Covid-related concerns, and it is unknown when production will resume, so you have a lot of downtime to give Into the Breach a shot.

Pro Clubs and VOLTA FOOTBALL combined

a

Taking the headlines, Pro Clubs and VOLTA FOOTBALL progression is now combined. VOLTA is the pick-up-and-play, launched in FIFA 20. A take on street football (RIP FIFA Street) where small-sided games and skills reign, with thousands of unlockable cosmetics available.

Now, wherever you play, your two avatars earn the same progression items. You’ll earn VOLTA coins and XP/skill points across both modes, taking the grind out of either mode. Great when you fancy casual VOLTA Arcade games over focused soccer.

In FIFA 22, Pro Clubs fans played for hours without making a dent in their level. Thanks to community feedback, the player progression system has been increased to 100 levels, allowing players to level up sooner.

There’s a host of new perks to unlock including ‘poacher’, ‘interceptor’, ‘light passes’ and an exciting new signature ability called ‘take flight’. You’ll be high-jumping at corners like Cristiano Ronaldo in no time.

At the end of a match, you’ll now see an accolades screen showing the top performers from your game, such as most distance covered and most tackles made. This is a great way of comparing yourself against the rest of your party without looking at the scoresheet.

Speaking of comparing performances, player ratings have had a refresh, and are now fairer on Pro Clubs players who play defensive roles and don’t score goals.

New, larger VOLTA stadium in rotation which has much bouncier walls and a bigger goal area. More space equals more time on the ball, and this will change the way VOLTA plays. Fans of the small, current arenas don’t fear – the new stadium will appear 50% of the time along with other arenas.

With every new game comes new cosmetics, and finally in FIFA 23, your Pro Clubs and VOLTA player can have tattoos! There are also loads of the latest soccer boots and facial accessories including the broken nose protector. Sadly, some of the sillier items won’t be usable in Pro Clubs. As ever, players can expect new content to be released in batches throughout the year.
