Alleged farm massacre culprit's prior police stoush over gun license revealed

The man accused of shooting three people dead on remote farmland in North Queensland had his gun license revoked by police more than a decade ago, court documents reveal.

But Bogie resident Darryl Young, who is charged with murdering Maree and Mervyn Schwarz and Graham Tighe, successfully appealed the police decision the same year his license was cancelled, claiming he needed it for his “business”.

Documents from the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) reveal Mr Young was first granted a gun license in 1992.

It allowed him to hold four rifles and two shotguns.

In 2010 Queensland Police refused his bid to renew the licence. They argued it was “not in the public interest” for him to hold a license.

In Mr Young’s appeal, he claimed he needed the guns to control feral animals on a property in Gladstone.

“There is no were (sic) in the laws of the gun laws that I have broken to stop me having a gun license,” Young says in his application.

“I need my gun license for my business. I hope the Tribunal over turns (sic) the decision so I can have my license.”

The court ruled in favor of Mr Young, rejecting police arguments to refuse the renewal.

Last week, in an unrelated matter, Mr Young was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Police allege the 59-year-old killed the Schwarzes and Mr Tighe at a property in Bogie, near Bowen, during an arranged meeting at the boundary line.

Graham’s brother Ross Tighe was also shot in the stomach but survived, alerting police to what had occurred.

Mr Young, who has been remanded in custody, briefly appeared before Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.

A man has died in police custody, after crashing his car through a fence in Melbourne in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Around 4am, police responded to reports a car had crashed through a fence and into the front yard of a premises on Murphy Street in Preston.

The man was having erratically inside the vehicle, police say, before getting out and confronting the officers.

“Officers attempted to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to become unresponsive,” Victoria police said in a statement.

“Attending officers immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man however he couldn’t be revived.”

The circumstances surrounding the man’s death are being investigated by the Homicide Squad.

Due to the death occurring while in police custody, the Professionals Standards Command will oversee the investigation.

Raytown police investigating homicide of two juveniles

Raytown Police say two juveniles were killed in a shooting Sunday afternoon. One person is in custody. Police say they were called to a shooting just after noon on Sunday at E. 87th Street and James A. Reed Road. Officers found two male juveniles who had been shot. One victim died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police say one person is in custody and the investigation continues. Mount Isa man in custody over alleged murder of 13yo girl

Man charged with murder after alleged hit-and-run in Mount Isa, north-west Queensland

Mount Isa man Trevor Caulton has been arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly drove a vehicle into a crowd of people, hitting and killing a 13-year-old girl.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Delacour Drive and Dent Street in the Mount Isa suburb of Pioneer after midnight on August 6 and treated the girl for critical head injuries.

Police confirmed she succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene.

Mr Caulton’s lawyer appeared on his behalf via phone at the Mount Isa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

A full brief of evidence was being prepared and the case would appear for mention at Mount Isa Magistrate’s Court on September 26.

The victim was identified and her family had been contacted, police said.

Fears of retribution prompt police warning

Police have called for calm in the community after the tragedy.

“I do have concerns about unrest in the community — this is a distressing case and this poor girl’s life has been taken,” said Mount Isa Police Acting Superintendent Jason Smith.

“We acknowledge the grief in the community and we implore everyone to remain calm around this incident and to assist police with the investigation.

“Sometimes in our community there can be an urge from some to seek retribution. Please know the law has been executed, the alleged offender is in jail and police have done as much as they can.”

A male exotic dancer who sparked chaos after shoppers spotted him carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle in the Perth CBD has been charged by police.

Police swarmed King Street about 2.40pm on Sunday after Chad Satchell allegedly flashed the tools of his trade on the way to work.

The Nollamara man stunned shoppers when he started roaming the street wearing a bulletproof vest and seemingly armed with a rifle.

Police pounced on the 31-year-old, later finding that Mr Satchell was in fact a stripper on his way to work.

It is believed Mr Satchell, the director of Fantasy Entertainment Australia, was performing the role of “sexy SWAT officer” for a party he was going to attend.

Police found that the assault rifle was in fact a gel blaster.

Police have charged Mr Satchell with possession of a prohibited weapon and being armed in a way that may cause fear.

It is alleged he placed the gel blaster gun, similar in design to an AR-15 assault rifle, on the ground next to him and put on a pair of boots and a black military style mesh vest with “SWAT” embossed on the back.

It led to several shoppers to call police, believing the firearm was real.

Gel blasters, which shoot water-filled gel pellets, have been prohibited in WA since July 2021 on the back of a rise of replica guns being smuggled into the State and converted into real weapons.

At the time, Police Minister Paul Papalia said police were unable to tell the difference between gel blasters and real guns out on the street.

Florida prosecutor vows to fight Gov. DeSantis suspension

ST. PETERSURG, Fla. (AP) — A Florida prosecutor vowed Sunday to fight his suspension from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis over his promise of him not to enforce the state’s 15-week abortion ban and support for gender transition treatments for minors.

Andrew Warren, a Democrat suspended last week from his twice-elected post as state attorney in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, said in a Facebook video message and news release Sunday he plans a “vigorous defense” by his legal team but did not give specifics.

“I’m not going down without a fight,” Warren said on the video. “I refuse to let this man trample on your freedoms to speak your mind, to make your own health care decisions, and to have your vote count.”

Warren was suspended Thursday by DeSantis, a Republican seeking re-election in November and potential 2024 presidential candidate, who cited neglect of duty and other alleged violations. The governor contended that’s because Warren signed statements with dozens of other prosecutors nationwide vowing not to pursue criminal cases against people who seek or provide abortions or gender transition treatments.

Warren contended Sunday the governor was essentially seeking to nullify the will of voters in the Tampa area who elected him in 2016 and 2020.

“I was elected because the people of this county share my vision for criminal justice, trust my judgment, and have seen your success,” Warren said in the video. “I swore to uphold the Constitution, and that’s exactly what I’ve done. DeSantis is trying to take away my job for doing my job.”

Under Florida law, the Republican-controlled state Senate has authority to reinstate Warren or uphold his removal from office. Warren could also take his case to court.

The governor’s office did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment Sunday. DeSantis said Thursday, however, that Warren was acting “above the law” and “displaying a lack of competence to be able to perform” the duties of his office.

“I don’t think the people of Hillsborough County want to have an agenda that is basically woke up, where you’re deciding that your view of social justice means certain laws shouldn’t be enforced,” said the governor.

Florida’s new abortion restriction became effective July 1 and remains under court challenge by abortion providers and allies. It prohibits abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions if the procedure is necessary to save the pregnant woman’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality. It does not allow exemptions in cases where pregnancies were caused by rape, incest or human trafficking.

Violators could face up to five years in prison. Physicians and other medical professionals could lose their licenses and face administrative fines of $10,000 for each violation.

Florida has not enacted laws criminalizing gender transition treatments for minors.

DeSantis appointed Hillsborough County Judge Susan Lopez to serve in Warren’s place during his suspension.

City police said officers were called to the 600 block of Linnard Street near Edmondson Avenue for a report of a shooting. Sunday identified the girl as Nykayia Strawder and said homicide detectives identified a 9-year-old boy as the suspect after speaking with witnesses. Witnesses told police the boy was playing with a loaded handgun when it accidentally fired, hitting Nykayia in the head. The boy then dropped the gun and fled. Police said they obtained a search-and-seizure warrant, found the gun and ran the serial number. Officers learned that the weapon is registered to a woman, who is a relative of the boy and is an armed security guard. In accordance with state law, and due to the age of the boy, he cannot be charged with a crime, police said .An investigation continues, and police are working with the state’s attorney’s office. More human remains discovered as drought dries Lake Mead

University instructor charged in shooting death of student

LAS VEGAS — More human remains have been found at drought-stricken Lake Mead National Recreation Area east of Las Vegas, authorities said Sunday.

It’s the fourth time since May that remains have been uncovered as Western drought forces the shoreline to retreat at the shrinking Colorado River reservoir behind the Hoover Dam.

National Park Service officials said rangers were called to the reservoir between Nevada and Arizona around 11 am Saturday after skeletal remains were discovered at Swim Beach.

Rangers and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police dive team went to retrieve the remains.

Park Service officials said the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office will try to determine when and how the person died as investigators review records of missing people.

On May 1, a barrel containing human remains was found near Hemenway Harbor. Police believe the remains were that of a man who died from a gunshot wound and the body was likely dumped in the mid-1970s to early 1980s.

Less than a week later, authorities say human skeletal remains were found at Calville Bay.

More recently, partial human remains were found in the Boulder Beach area on July 25.

Police have speculated that more remains may be discovered as the water level at Lake Mead continues to recede.

The discoveries have prompted about long-unsolved missing person and murder cases dating back decades speculation — to organized crime and the early days of Las Vegas, which is just a 30-minute drive from the lake.

The lake surface has dropped more than 170 feet (52 meters) since the reservoir was full in 1983.

The drop in the lake level comes while a vast majority of peer-reviewed science says the world is warming, mainly because of rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Scientists say the US West, including the Colorado River basin, has become warmer and drier in the past 30 years.

Shoppers on Perth’s King Street were left shocked and frightened after spotting a man roaming around with what appeared to be a dangerous assault rifle on Sunday afternoon.

But after police responded under emergency conditions, it appeared to be a case of mistaken identity — with it revealed the gunman was a male stripper on his way to work dressed as a sexy SWAT officer.

Police quickly confirmed the 31-year-old man was no real threat to the community and that his weapon was part of his adult entertainment work attire.

And it turned out he was committed to giving an authentic performance, as the weapon he was carrying was believed to be a gel blaster.

Gel blaster firearms are prohibited in WA.

A person caught in possession of a gel blaster can face maximum penalties of up to three years in prison or a $36,000 fine.

WA outlawed the weapons — which shoot water-filled gel pellets at 100m/second — in July last year following a rise of criminals smuggling the replica guns into the State and converting them into real ones.

At the time, Police Minister Paul Papalia said police were unable to tell the difference between gel blasters and real guns out on the street.

“It is a far too dangerous situation to tolerate any longer,” he said.

“When a police officer is responding to a call out, they will be assuming someone is in possession of a firearm.”

The surge of gel blasters became an issue for police who reported being confronted by the weapons almost 150 times in 2020.

The adult entertainer was taken into custody clad in his SWAT uniform and ballistic vest and the gel blaster was seized.

Police said the man was “assisting with the investigation” as the firearm undergoes an inspection to determine whether it is functional.

Several police units were deployed to the scene under emergency conditions and upon arrival a couple of minutes later a 31-year-old man was arrested without incident.

“The investigation into the functionality of the seized firearm and the circumstances surrounding it being carried in public is ongoing,” a WA Police spokesman said.

It has since been established there was no real threat to the community and the uniform the man was wearing was part of his adult entertainment work attire.

Even though police determined there was not a legitimate threat to the community, the force’s spokesman said it was an important reminder that there are consequences for flaunting realistic weapons in public and for owning prohibited weapons.

“The members of the public who called for police assistance had genuine concerns for their safety and the safety of others,” the spokesman said.

“The firearm in question looks very real and it would be very difficult for any member of the public to be able to determine whether it was in fact real or not.”

Police search for handbag thieves after three women targeted at East Victoria Park shopping center

Police are trying to track down some brazen thieves following a string of handbag burglaries at an East Victoria Park shopping center on Saturday.

Three women were targeted by the thieves throughout the afternoon, who snatched their handbags and purses while their backs were turned.

A woman in her 80s had her handbag stolen while she was unloading her shopping at about 2.00pm.

She was parked in a disability bay at the northern end of the shopping center on Albany Highway and placed her bag in the boot.

Two women approached the vehicle and stole the handbag.

Almost three hours later, a woman in her 30s realized her purse was missing after putting her shopping in the car at the same center. She initially went home, but returned to check whether it had been left in a trolley.

The purse was taken and the woman’s debit card had been used twice at a nearby bottle shop.
