Kentucky Flooding: Officials call for critical recovery supplies as dozens are found dead in flooding and death toll is expected to rise

CNN

As the death toll in flood-stricken areas of Kentucky continues to rise, rescue workers and officials are focused on recovering missing people in several counties and coordinating vital aid for thousands of displaced residents.

At least 28 people, including four children, have died due to severe flooding that struck parts of Kentucky last week, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Sunday. The governor told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he believes recovery crews are “going to be finding bodies for weeks, many of them swept hundreds of yards, maybe a quarter-mile plus from where they were last.”

While reading a breakdown of those killed in each county during a news conference Sunday, Beshear became visibly emotional when he reached the four children dead in Knott County, where 15 people have been found dead.

“It says ‘minor,’” the governor said looking at the list. “They are children. The oldest one is in second grade,” Beshear said.

The flooding – which swelled onto roads, destroyed bridges and swept away entire homes – displaced thousands of Kentuckians, according to the governor. It also knocked out vital power, water and roadway infrastructure, some of which has yet to be restored.

There was risk of flash flooding Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A slight chance of excessive rainfall is possible throughout the affected region on Monday and Tuesday. Conditions are expected to begin improving Monday, but the region could receive two-day totals of up to two inches of rain. Some areas could see more.

In Perry County, as many as 50 bridges are damaged and inaccessible, according to county Judge Executive Scott Alexander.

Debris surrounds a badly damaged home near Jackson, Kentucky, on July 31, 2022.

“What that means is there’s somebody living on the other side or multiple families living up our holler on the other side that we’re still not able to have road access to,” Alexander said.

Kentucky State Police are still actively searching for missing residents in several counties and ask that families inform law enforcement if their loved one is missing.

Search and recovery efforts could face yet another obstacle as temperatures are expected to soar Tuesday and through the rest of the week, placing crews, volunteers, displaced people and the area’s homeless population under pressing heat.

As the climate crisis fuels more extreme and frequent weather events, several areas of the US are currently experiencing flash flood risk, including swathes of the desert Southwest, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Tucson, Arizona.

State officials are immediately focused on getting food, water and shelter to the people who were forced to flee their homes.

Power outages and storm damage left 22 water systems operating in a limited capacity, a Sunday news release from the governor’s office said. More than 60,000 water service connections are either without water or under a boil advisory, it said.

Nearly 10,000 customers in the eastern region of the state were still without power as of early Monday, according to PowerOutage.us.

Officials overseeing the recovery efforts say bottled water, cleaning supplies and relief fund donations are among the most needed resources as the region works toward short and long term recovery. FEMA is providing tractor trailers full of water to several counties.

Volunteers work at a distribution center of donated goods in Buckhorn, Kentucky.

“A lot of these places have never flooded. So if they’ve never flooded, these people will not have flood insurance,” the mayor of Hazard, Kentucky, Donald Mobelini told CNN Saturday. “If they lose their home, it’s a total loss. There’s not going to be an insurance check coming to help that. We need cash donations,” he said, referring to a relief fund set up by the state.

Beshear established a Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund to pay the funeral expenses of flood victims and raise money for those impacted by the damage. As of Sunday morning, the fund had received more than $1 million in donations, according to the governor.

The federal government has approved relief funding for several counties. FEMA is also accepting individual disaster assistance applications from impacted renters and homeowners in Breathitt, Clay, Knott, Letcher and Perry counties, the governor said, noting he thinks more counties will be added to the list as damage assessments continue.

Though the recovery effort was still in the search-and-rescue phase over the weekend, Beshear said in a news conference Saturday that he believes the losses will be “in the tens if not the hundreds of millions of dollars.”

“This is one of the most devastating, deadly floods that we have seen in our history,” Beshear told NBC Sunday. “It wiped out areas where people didn’t have that much to begin with.”

And it wasn’t just personal possessions washed away by the floodwaters. A building housing archival film and other materials in Whitesburg, was impacted, with water submerging an irreplaceable collection of historic film, videotape and audio records that documented Appalachia.

Appalachian filmmaker Mimi Pickering told CNN that the beloved media, arts and education center, Appalshop, held archival footage and film strips dating as far back as the 1940s, holding the stories and voices of the region’s people. Employees and volunteers were racing to preserve as much material as they could.

“We’re working as hard and fast as we can to try to save all that material… The full impact, I don’t think you have totally hit me yet. I think I don’t really want to think about it,” Pickering said. She noted the Smithsonian and other institutions have reached out offering assistance.

The extensive loss Kentuckians are suffering will likely also take a mental toll, Frances Everage, a therapist and 44-year resident of the city of Hazard told CNN. While her home de ella was spared, she said some of her friends de ella have damaged homes or lost their entire farms.

“When you put your blood, sweat and tears into something and then see it ripped away in front of your eyes, there’s going to be a grieving process,” Everage said. “This community will rebuild and we will be okay, but the impact on mental health is going to be significant.”

Australian Country Choice: 1500 jobs at risk as company eyes interstate move over development drama

More than 1,500 Queenslanders could lose their jobs as casualties of a heated dispute over a waterfront development in Brisbane.

Queensland meatworks operation Australian Country Choice (ACC) announced it was considering moving its sizeable operations interstate as it fights for the future of its meat processing facility in Cannon Hill.

The family business, led by billionaire Trevor Lee, has launched a legal appeal against the Brisbane council’s decision to approve two businesses in the Rivermakers precinct developed by BMI Group.

The ACC argued the proposed businesses would be located in an industrial buffer zone that prohibits using land for retail or restaurant activities.

The Queensland government intervened in the ongoing dispute between the two heavyweights by placing a temporary injunction on council approvals in the Morningside area, but the ACC said the move didn’t go far enough.

The meatworks business announced on Monday that it was considering moving its operations to NSW as it looked to “assess all viable options for the future”.

“Our preference would be to keep operating from our existing Brisbane premises which are world class, but that requires long-term planning certainty so we can continue making the necessary investment in our current operations and commit to a planned expansion down the track,” an ACC spokesperson said.

The family-run agriculture company is one of the largest primary production employers in the country, with 1,500 employees and plans to create a further 300 jobs.

“Supporting and growing our employee base is a top priority,” the ACC spokesperson said.

“We would prefer these jobs remain in Queensland, but without planning certainty we can’t make a long-term commitment.”

The ACC spokesperson said preliminary discussions are focused on locations in northern NSW for ease of cross-border access.

The Australasian Meat Industry Employees’ Union (AMIEU) said in a statement it was “deeply concerned” by the possible move, noting the meat processing facility had been “an important source of employment” for more than a century.

“If Australian Country Choice is forced to move, the impact upon meat workers and their families will be devastating,” Queensland branch secretary Matt Journeaux said.

The union said the encroachment of the commercial development on the abattoir site presented a serious threat to the “critical industry” of meat processing and the 1000 people employed at the ACC facility.

“It is inevitable that this will lead to complaints about the ongoing operation of the abattoir,” Mr Journeaux said.

“I can’t imagine too many people enjoying an outdoor dining experience in their new lifestyle hub with cattle trucks driving past.”

The AMIEU called on the Brisbane City Council and the state government to provide a long-term commitment to the ACC to allow the company to continue to invest in the abattoir and its employees.

The council has indicated it will abide by the temporary injunction and is working with businesses in the contentious waterfront development to ensure compliance.

The developer of the multimillion-dollar Rivermakers precinct, BMI Group, has been contacted for comment.

The ACC spokesperson confirmed the two businesses were not involved in mediation in relation to the dispute.

How to turn on the new iPhone sound recognition feature

Manzana‘s sound recognition tool, which allows users to be alerted when their phones detect specific sounds in their environments, is getting both a fun and useful customization upgrade with iOS 16.

The new accessibility feature lets iPhone owners create and record their own alert sounds, rather than relying on the pre-programmed options for household, people, and environmental sounds, to help deaf users be alerted to actions happening around them.

Users with disabilities can set sound alerts for their medical devices, for example, or their homes’ unique doorbells, or the electronic jingles specific to their appliances. Sound recognition can also be incorporated into accessibility shortcuts (which can be found at the bottom of the accessibility menu in your phone settings), and easily turned on and off in the iPhone Control Center (just swipe down from the top right of your phone screen ).

How to set your own custom sound recognition alerts

Apple already has a plethora of sounds your phone is able to detect and alert you to, including police sirens, fire alarms, and breaking glass, but to be alerted to specific sounds in your home, a personal device, or something else with a specific or unusual noise, use the new customization tools.

1. Go to your phone “Settings” menu and select “Accessibility”

Sound recognition, and other features designed specifically with the deaf and hard of hearing community in mind, can be found in the “hearing” section of your iPhone’s accessibility settings.

3. Choose any of the “custom” options at the bottom of each sound category

Sound recognition divides the alert noises into various categories, from emergency alarms to people. Scroll to the bottom of each category to find a customization option that most closely aligns with the object you want to record, whether an alarm or appliance. Custom options should appear as a blue, clickable link.

4. Name and record your custom sound

First, name the sound you wish to record. You will then be prompted to get the device or object ready to make its sound. Once ready, select the blue “Start Listening” button — your phone will need to hear the object or device at least five times and will let you know when it’s successfully created the alert.

et voila. Your sound will now be saved under the personalized name you’ve chosen. Simply make sure the new alert is turned on — you can also adjust the alert tones that play when a sound recognition goes off — and go about your day.

Alonso joins Aston Martin on multi-year F1 deal

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso will replace Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin for the 2023 Formula 1 season on a ‘multi-year’ contract.

Alonso will leave Alpine following a two-year stint with the team, paving the way for Australian Oscar Piastri to join the grid for 2023, though that is as yet unconfirmed.

“This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1 today,” Alonso said of his move.

“I have known Lawrence [Stroll] and Lance [Stroll] for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula One.

“I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

“No one in Formula 1 today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.

“I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organization that is committed to learn, develop and succeed.

“We all appreciate that there is much to be done to get to the front, and that we must apply all our energies in working together to find performance.

“The passion and desire to perform that I have witnessed convinces me to maintain my enjoyment and commitment to the sport.

“I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that feel right to me.”

Alonso re-joined the operation currently known as Alpine at the start of last season, having twice driven for it previously.

It was with the squad, when known as Renault, that he won his two world championships, in 2005 and 2006.

With his contract up at the end of the current season, it was widely expected Alonso would renew for at least another year, with CEO Laurent Rossi factoring him into the company’s World Endurance Championship plans.

His presence at the team was a road block for Oscar Piastri, last year’s Formula 2 champion who is this year working as the team’s reserve driver.

It was thought he would be farmed out to Williams for the duration of Alonso’s next contract, a move which is now unnecessary.

Alonso’s shift is therefore all but confirmation that the Australian will partner Esteban Ocon at the Anglo-French team next season.

It also settles much of the remaining driver market, with Piastri linked to McLaren, though that suggestion was always fanciful to the point of ridiculous.

Williams now holds the most coveted seat on the grid for next year, with Nyck de Vries and Logan Sargeant arguably the front runners for that opportunity, alongside incumbent Nicholas Latifi.

Meanwhile, at Aston Martin the addition of Alonso adds experience alongside Stroll that the squad would have otherwise lost following the retirement of Vettel.

“I have witnessed the excitement in the engineering team and throughout the whole organization at the opportunity to work with Fernando,” said Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack.

“We know that nearly everyone can learn from someone of Fernando’s caliber and experience.

“We are confident that he will inspire everyone to lift their game, and that will only enhance the already infectious energy that exists within the team.

“We are on a journey to create a winning organization, and it is clear that Fernando will accelerate our progress and bring us to a performance in which we can take pride.

“We are delighted to have Fernando and Lance as our driver line-up next year – the combination of experience and youth will be incredibly strong and both drivers look forward to competing and working together.

“The team has a new leadership focused on the development of AMR23, and we are all thrilled that they and our future projects will benefit from the knowledge and experience that Fernando will bring.”

Team owner Lawrence Stroll added: “I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me.

“I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organization to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.

“It seemed natural therefore to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together. .”

Man breaks into Kalgoorlie-Boulder homes and sexually assaults three women in 2½ hours

A man forced his way into three homes in the South Kalgoorlie-Boulder area early on Monday morning and sexually assaulted a woman at each house, police have revealed.

Police on Monday said between 1am and 3.30am a male offender forced entry into three homes before sexually assaulting the female occupant, and attempted to gain entry into a fourth home.

Superintendent Steve Thompson said as a result of police inquiries they arrested a 31-year-old man shortly before 7am on Monday.

The man was in custody and assisting police with the investigation.

It wasn’t a matter of an open door, there was force used.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of these incidents, which would have been a significant and traumatic event, and they’ve been provided with a medical and support that is appropriate,” Supt Thompson said.

Supt Thompson said the victims were aged between 30 and 70, with two of the women the only occupants of the houses at the time of the attacks but there was another occupant present during the incident in the third home.

He said entry was forced to the premises at these locations.

“It wasn’t a matter of an open door, there was force used,” he said.

Supt Thompson said Kalgoorlie detectives had launched a major investigation and were supported by resources from Kalgoorlie Police Station, the District Forensic Office and the Intelligence Office.

“We’ve asked some members from our Crime Scene Unit, and also members from the Sexual Assault Squad to come in and assist with the investigation. It’s obviously a large investigation we have a number of crime scenes that need to be processed, so we’ve asked for additional support,” Supt Thompson said.

Trump Blames Pelosi, DC Mayor Bowser for Jan. 6 Capitol Riot

Former President Donald Trump blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser for the events that unfolded during last year’s Capitol riot.

“January 6th is her [Bowser] and Nancy’s fault. ‘No, I’m not kidding’ (as Joe Bidden would say!),” Trump said Sunday on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The ex-president’s post included his comments earlier that criticized Bowser for asking the National Guard to help deal with migrants being transported to DC, alleging that she refused to do so during the Capitol riot.

In a July 19 letter sent to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s office and in another letter sent to the White House on July 22, Bowser requested help from the National Guard to handle the influx of migrants that were being bused into the city from Texas and Arizona .

Christopher Rodriguez, director of Washington, DC’s emergency management agency, said in the letter on behalf of the mayor, that the situation has reached “tipping points” as more buses arrived in the last month.

The mayor asked the National Guard “to help prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis in the nation’s capital” where efforts by nonprofits helping migrants resettle in the country became “unsustainable” as they are “overwhelmed and underfunded.”

The issue began after Republican Governors Doug Ducey of Arizona and Greg Abbott of Texas began shipping migrants from their states to DC after President Joe Biden pledged in April to lift a Trump-era order restricting border crossings to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Rodriguez wrote in the letter. The nation’s capital has since seen more than 4,000 people brought in with nearly 200 buses.

Trump on Friday targeted Bowser in a Truth Social post, saying: “The Mayor of Washington, DC, wants the National Guard to help with the thousands of Illegal Immigrants, coming from the insane Open Border, that are flooding the City, but refused National Guard help when it came to providing Security at the Capitol Building for a far larger crowd on January 6th.

His remarks come after the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot presented evidence last week revealing that Trump took no action for over three hours after his supporters stormed the Capitol just 15 minutes after his “fight like hell” speech in an apparent effort to disrupt the official certification of Biden’s electoral college victory.

Some of Trump’s top allies have come forward with testimonies to the committee including top White House lawyer Pat Cipollone, deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger, and former deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, among others. Some of his Cabinet’s officials also reportedly spoke with the committee recently, including former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Newsweek reached out to the offices of Pelosi and Bowser for comment.

Flight AB 001 makes history at Sunshine Coast Airport

Bonza’s first aircraft has touched down at Sunshine Coast Airport, landing a massive coup for our region.

In one of the largest launch announcements in Australian aviation history, Sunshine Coast Airport in February was named as the first Bonza base and head office location for the nation’s only independent carrier.

The arrival of the first aircraft, which left Seattle on July 29, flew to Honolulu July 30 and then left Fiji Monday morning, marks a major milestone for the company and supports its ongoing momentum with the regulatory process.

It is the first Boeing 737 MAX to be based in Australia and will be part of a fleet of brand new and fuel efficient aircraft.

They will cater for Aussie travelers flying to an initial 17 destinations on 27 routes.

Destinations soon to be available for Coast residents are: (Queensland) Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, the Whitsundays Coast, Rockhampton; (NSW) Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Albury, Tamworth; (Victoria) Melbourne, Avalon and Mildura.

Bonza, which hopes to be wheels up by late September, has 200 pilot and cabin crew roles to fill across its network, with 100 of those “Legends” to be based on the Sunshine Coast.

Bonza CEO Tim Jordan said the company was “beyond excited” to welcome its first aircraft to Sunshine Coast Airport.

“With so much buzz around the country for Bonza, we hope it is also exciting for the communities we’ll be flying to,” he said.

“Our team of legends has been working hard behind the scenes to reach this significant milestone and so it was important that we were all here to welcome flight AB 001 together.

“We are now one important step closer to connecting more Australians with convenient low cost travel options to more destinations for holidays and to visit loved ones.”

The aircraft will have its interior completed on Aussie shores. It will be used as a spare aircraft, a clear investment in customer experience and part of Bonza’s strategy to minimize potential disruptions to its customers wherever possible.

Additional aircraft will follow and ultimately support Bonza’s growth plans beyond its initial Sunshine Coast and Melbourne bases.

The first Bonza aircraft arrives at its home base on the Coast.

“This is an exciting time for Australian aviation and most importantly, the Aussie traveling public who will now enjoy more choice,” Mr Jordan said.

“Ninety three per cent of Bonza’s routes are currently not serviced by another airline (25 out of 27 routes) and 96 per cent are not currently served by a low-cost carrier,” he said.

“Flights are expected to start from around $50 for each hour a customer is in the air and 8kg of carry-on baggage is included in the flight price.”

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said the arrival of Bonza’s first aircraft on the Sunshine Coast was “a momentous day for the region”.

“We are very proud to be named as the home base for Bonza,” he said.

“Our partnership with Bonza will benefit the region, state and community, connecting more people to more places, bringing them closer to the moments that matter most.

“The arrival of Bonza is a game changer for the Sunshine Coast that will create more local jobs and spearhead tourism and business growth across the wider region.”

Cabin crew will be wearing casual and hip uniforms.

Earlier this month, Bonza announced its IATA code as ‘AB’ as a nod to Andrew Brodie and his team who welcomed Bonza to the Sunshine Coast as its home base. It also represents Bonza’s mission of getting customers from A to B without C (cost and complexity).

Aussies are encouraged to download the Fly Bonza app, which will be the only place to book directly.

The airline is also calling out for Aussies to help name the plane by asking them to comment on Bonza’s social media pages with their nicknames.

“Who better to name our first aircraft than the people we are here to serve. If you have a nickname that would look good on the side of our first aircraft, head to our Instagram and Facebook pages and let us nick your nickname,” Mr Jordan said.

YouTube Shorts can now be easily created from existing long-form videos

Short format media has been dominating lately, with bite-sized and easily digestible clips gaining a resurgence thanks to apps like TikTok. Because of this, YouTube introduced its take on short-form videos called Shorts, encouraging users to experiment with shorter media on its platform. From now on, YouTube will make it easier for creators to make Shorts, allowing them to take existing content in their library, edit it, and upload their new creations to YouTube.

Creators can head to the YouTube Studio app and choose from any long-form video in their library, select up to 60 seconds, and create Shorts. Users will have access to all of the same tools found in the web-based version of YouTube Studio, like the timeline editor, filters, music, and more. Furthermore, creators can add additional footage as needed from their gallery if it does not meet the 60-second requirement. Creators will also be able to fill in content by using the Shorts camera. Best of all, Shorts created using existing videos on YouTube will have links to the original videos. The feature is currently rolling out to iOS and Android devices.

While short-form videos are having a moment, flourishing on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, other platforms like Instagram are struggling to capitalize. Recently, Instagram released a new change to its feed, displaying full-screen images and videos. Unfortunately, this change didn’t go down well, as users began to complain en masse, requiring Instagram’s CEO to address the changes. As a result, the company eventually back-peddled, reverting the feed to its previous incarnation. Despite this, Instagram has committed itself to evolving and pursuing a future that is leaning more toward videos and away from its roots of still images. It’s hard to tell how this will all pan out, but one thing is sure, today’s trend could quickly and abruptly end as soon as tomorrow.
