TikTok ramps up its gaming initiative by adding mini-games to the platform

Video platform TikTok has added mini-games to the service to test the waters before making a push into gaming.

As reported by TechCrunch, TikTok’s gaming pilot includes partnered developers such as Voodoo, Nitro Games, FRVR, Aim Lab, and Lotem, with these developers being involved with the nine currently available mini-games. This comes off the heels of TikTok partnering with mobile gaming developer Zynga for the release of the game Crazy Disc 3D exclusively on TikTok.

A spokesperson from the company revealed to TechCrunch that “we’re always looking at ways to enrich our platform and regularly test new features and integrations that bring value to our community,” and continued to state “currently, we’re exploring bringing HTML5 games to TikTok through integrations with third-party game developers and studios.”

It is also noted that “the initiative is in the very early stages of testing”, and that none of the games are currently monetized with adds or in-game purchases, with the pilot simply being a test to see how users of the service interact with and create content around the games.

The games can be accessed via the “Add Link” option, which leads to a “MiniGame” tab, however Crazy Disc 3D is listed separately at the time of publication. The games are available in both the UK and US versions of the app.

TikTok also released mini-game Garden Of Good for the app last June in partnership with Feeding America, and is accessible to all US users over the age of 18. The description reads: “Garden of Good is centered around the education of food items that are most in-need at local food banks across the nation.” The platform worked with the nonprofit organization “to incorporate these insights and nutritional facts about these food items,” with it providing “real-time updates/progress in the fight to provide hunger relief.”

Kate Moss wasn’t just naturally slender, she wasn’t fed | Kate Moss

The controversies and criticisms surrounding Kate Moss have often been unfair and highly contradictory (Take off your bra! Put on some weight! After decades of being talked down to, Kate Moss speaks out, 25 July). However, Zoe Williams’ assertion that Moss’s famously slender figure was “just the way she looks” is both inaccurate and unhelpful. Moss’s exact statement in the Desert Island Discs interview was “I was thin because I didn’t get fed at shoots or in shows and I’d always been thin”, which highlights the problems in the modeling industry and, therefore, the role of environmental factors.

This may not seem like an important distinction to make. But to people with eating disorders, or the millions of young girls who see these models and wonder why they can’t seem to achieve that ideal stick-figure, it is essential to show that this is not normal or healthy. At the height of her modeling career, Kate Moss had a BMI of around 15 to 16. This is well beneath the BMI of 17.5, which is considered anorexic. Even if Moss herself did not suffer from the disease, it is clearly not a healthy or natural weight to be – a BMI under 16 even indicates starvation by the World Health Organization’s standard. Countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Israel have laws banning ultra-thin models, in the latter case any below the minimum healthy BMI of 18.5. This is not to discriminate. It is simply meant to combat unhelpful beauty standards, the spread of eating disorders – and the physical and mental strain on the models themselves.

Fernando Alonso signs for Aston Martin in 2023, news, latest, Sebastian Vettel retirement, Formula One, Oscar Piastri

Fernando Alonso will join Aston Martin from 2023, clearing the way for Oscar Piastri to make his full-time debut next season.

Alonso made the shock announcement on Monday, confirming the switch on a multiyear deal starting in 2023.

The two-time champion said he was convinced the team, currently ninth in the standings with 20 points, less than half his own current tally, was capable of success during his contract term.

“This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1 today,” he said. “I have known Lawrence [Stroll] and Lance [Stroll] for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula 1.

“I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

“No-one in Formula 1 today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.”

Alonso had signaled he wanted to stay with Alpine for at least two more seasons, but the French team was reportedly prepared to offer him only one more year before shifting his to sportscars to avoid losing Aussie junior Piastri to a rival constructor.

The Spaniard, who said he returned to the sport last year to fight for a third championship, said he wasn’t prepared to give up on his long-held goal.

“I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organization that is committed to learn, develop and succeed,” he said. “I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that feel right to me.”

His defection paves the way for Aussie young gun Oscar Piastri to be promoted to his seat alongside Esteban Ocon next year.

Piastri will be the second full-time Australian driver on the grid alongside Daniel Ricciardo.

The team has been agonizing over Alonso’s future knowing that the Mark Webber-led Piastri was determined to see the reining F2 champion in a competitive seat as early as possible.

As recently as last week the team was talking publicly about loaning Piastri, most likely to backmarking the Williams team. Webber was meanwhile rumored to be attempting to engineer a switch to Ricciardo’s McLaren seat despite the senior Aussie being under contract.

Alpine is yet to comment on Alonso’s announcement.

Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll said Alonso’s signature was a vote of confidence in his team’s plans to move forward on the grid.

“I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me,” he said. “I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organization to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.

“It seemed natural therefore to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together. .”

Alonso is replacing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who announced his end-of-year retirement from the sport last week.

Desperation over money led to brutal 1995 murder, court hears

Desperation over money and the claimed theft of $1000 led to the brutal murder of Hasan Dastan in 1995, at sydney jury has been told.
The body of 52-year-old Hasan Dastan was found inside a workshop (Supplied)

Dastan was found dead in a pool of blood at his Esy Auto Dismantlers business on Monday December 11, 1995 after being bludgeoned with a heavy object.

“The deceased was located in his workshop where he had been subjected to a severe attack to his head, face and body,” crown prosecutor Brett Hatfield said on Monday.

A metal pipe was found in Dastan’s mouth, a sledgehammer lay nearby and a bloodstained note with a partial footprint lay close to the body, the NSW Supreme Court jury heard.

Dastan’s employee Kubilay Kilincer was a suspect in the initial 1995 police murder investigation but was not charged until 2020 after detectives took over the unsolved homicide case two years earlier.

Kilincer was accused of murdering his Fairfield Heights employer but has pleaded not guilty.

On Monday, Hatfield said Kilincer frequently asked to borrow money from members of the Turkish community in Sydney.

“The deceased was aware of this and often would complain about it and tell people not to loan the accused money,” the barrister said.

These financial requests allegedly included $500 that was desperately and urgently needed for a friend and $1200 required to secure a housing commission home.

Kilincer was accused of stealing around $1000 paid by a customer picking up their Ford Laser hatchback at the Blacktown business a few days before the alleged murder.

Kubilay Kilincer was named as a “main suspect” in a coronial inquest into Mr Dastan’s death in 2000, but he was never charged. (9News)

With Dastan suspecting Kilincer had been pilfering money from his business, he was on the verge of firing him when the murder occurred, the jury was told.

The eight-week trial in front of Justice Helen Wilson continues.

All-clear given after suspicious package forces evacuations of ticket counters in Terminal 3 at LAX

Traffic was backed up at LAX and Terminal 3 was largely shut down after a suspicious package was found Sunday night.

The package was reported at about 10 pm, and passengers and employees have been removed from the ticketing area of Terminal 3, an LAX spokesperson said.

By about 11:45 pm, the airport was given the all-clear.

“Police have determined it is safe to open Terminal 3 and traffic will begin moving on the upper level shortly. Thank you for your patience as safety is our first priority,” LAX said on Twitter.

During the investigation, the airport urged travelers to allow for delays.

“Traffic coming into the airport is slow and backed up due to the police activity on the upper level. Please allow extra time to get to the airport,” LAX said on Twitter.

The airport also suggested “using the lower level during this time if dropping off or picking up.”

“Traffic coming into the airport on the upper level is being diverted near Terminal 1 so please use the lower level for much faster access. Traffic is very heavy along major access routes so please allow extra time to reach the terminal area,” the airport added.

Real estate: Property investment firm under fire for ‘cringe’ email celebrating rising rent repayments

A property manager has come under fire after appearing to boast about upping rent in an email to tenants.

Property investment firm Ironfish sent an email to its customers last week stating the highest weekly increase and average rent increase in Melbourne in June.

“Achievement in June: Biggest rent increase – $225 per week,” the email states, before adding that the company leased 1,103 properties in the last financial year.

The email also includes two references, one from a landlord and another from a renter, which suggests there was no target demographic for the email.

A renter who received the email posted a screenshot to reddit, with the caption: “My rent just went up $400 a month and the agency sent me an email bragging about it.”

The email is accompanied with a photo of two young children jumping on a bed, having a pillow fight with smiles on their faces.

It’s caused a stir online, with both tenants and landlords disapproving of the email, and many left shocked after reading its contents.

“As an owner and provider that’s cringe. If my real estate (agent) boasted like that I’d be out,” one user said.

“I received the same email and had the same disgusted feeling, and I’m an owner (just not with them),” said another.

“That’s just disgusting. They are literally celebrating ripping off desperate people. It’s just deplorable,” a third commented.

Meanwhile others have raised concerns about how much the rent had increased by.

“Can they actually do that large an increase? I mean legally? What do they have in your lease on how it’s calculated? Fairly sure Tenants Victoria may have a bit more to say about it,” one user commented.

“How can a $225 rent increase be justified?” another user questioned. “Heck, even $98 is a lot.”

“So nuts. Ours tried to raise it by $90 a month which I thought was ridiculous and we just said no and they agreed to stay the same if we signed a 12-month lease,” another said.

News.com.au has contacted Ironfish for comment on the email.

According to Consumer Affairs Victoria, landlords are not allowed to increase rent during a fixed-term agreement unless stated otherwise, and have to give tenants at least 60 days’ notice.

The law doesn’t state how much a landlord can increase weekly repayments by however it should be changed in line with the consumer price index, average rent prices, by a fixed percentage or by a fixed dollar amount.

Renters also have the right to challenge their increase if they believe their repayments have been raised too high.

Despite the sharp increase stated in the email, data from CoreLogic suggests Melbourne has the cheapest rental market with a typical home costing a renter $480 a week.

The rising cost of living, low vacancy rates and increasing interest rates are some of the reasons why landlords are choosing to hike weekly rent repayments.

Apple takes down online Apple Store for ‘updates’ [u]

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

The Apple Store is offline in the US and most — but not all — territories worldwide.

The online Apple Store is currently showing its familiar “We’ll be right back,” notice, along with the information that “updates are coming to the Apple Store.” Unusually, the Store is not offline worldwide, however.

At time of writing, the US, Australia, UK, and major European are showing variations on the “Check again soon” message. But the Store in other regions, including China, Japan and New Zealand, is operating normally.

There are no Apple products due to be added through any announced pre-order release. It’s conceivable that Apple will make an unannounced addition, but it’s unlikely, given that the Store is not down worldwide.

The US Apple Store does include products such as certain accessories that are not available elsewhere. However, if it isn’t due to maintenance issues, it’s most likely that Apple is about to unveil some promotion.

Apple is currently offering a promotion in China that, until the end of Monday, August 1, 2022, features rare discounts on many products.

Update 04:10 Eastern: the store is back up

Jane de Graaff’s Health Journey: this week I fell right off the wagon

This past week was the big one. It always happens at some point on a health journey, but I just didn’t think it would happen quite so soon.

I’m on week three of a reset to regain my personal health, both mental and physical, after letting it slide for too long. I knew it would be hard to get on back up, but it’s time to put myself first. So I did. And it’s been going well – gently, but still well.

This week things took a bit of a turn, and putting myself first actually meant my new regimen had to wait and I fell off the proverbial wagon. But, as always, there’s two sides to this. Because stalling on this journey doesn’t necessarily mean failing.

As one of my good friends loves to remind me, the body keeps score – and mine is really showing its hand these days. My immunity is being put through the wringer and despite having the various shots and doing all the right things, I still seem to catch everything that’s going around. I’ve had a cough and flu symptoms along with headaches and general aches and pains since March.

It would be nice to have just one week where I don’t feel run-down and on the edge of another cold, yet again, but that’s part of the reason for this new health journey. And I know plenty of other people feel the same. I hear you.

So, I rest, I drink lots of water and hot healing drinks. As noted, my diet has improved and I am doing regular amounts of manageable exercise both for my mind and body. You’d think at this point my health would start to pick up, start to improve and join the Reset party.

Yet it seems I might have been asking my body to just hold on and keep going for a bit too long before I decided to take my health in a more focused direction. Because last week I crashed and burned in a spectacular fashion, right at the moment when I thought I’d be on track to start seeing improvements.

It’s that age-old conundrum, you know how it goes – things just seem to fight against you when you make a change for the better. My brother often jokes that you don’t twist your ankle until you take up running, you don’t sprain your shoulder until you start playing tennis, that sort of thing.

So my week went down in flames. A migraine, which I never suffer from, took me out for a whole day midweek, and the rest of the week was a blur of COVID tests and cold and flu medication, along with bedtimes so early the kids started calling me “bubba”: “Night bubba, sleep well.”

READMORE: Why tins of SPAM are being locked up in some stores

What it meant was that while I was listening to what my body needed in terms of rest, food and quiet, I simply had to abandon my hard-won personal permission to exercise and get out into nature. All exercise ceased and food was simply what I felt like – possibly not as nourishing as it could be, because I couldn’t really think about it.

But crashing and burning when your body is telling you to rest is sometimes the crash and burn we need. Sure, I fell right off the wagon, but it was what my body was telling me I needed to do and that was important. You’re sick, you’re burned out, you need to rest. So it’s oksy to put a stop on things this week – and I clearly needed to – or a week will turn into a month and then into many months. So I stopped. Even with the health regimen.

But I also promised myself that this was not an excuse to give up on my new focus on self-care in an exercise and mental health capacity. In fact, this fall was a mindful moment that would pave the way for me to get on back up, yet again, this week (gently).

It might not have been what I planned for my health journey, but it is still part of the bigger reset. In fact, while on the face of it it may look like a disaster, it’s actually exactly what the reset is about, listening to what I need, instead of pretending that I can keep going.

Unfortunately, it still seems I’m learning the hard way that if I don’t stop when I need to, It will become a case of I’ll stop when my body have you unto

How many of us are guilty of this, ploughing on why we think the world will stop turning if we don’t? Let’s just hope that next time, I can learn to stop before I crash in a heap. And yes, it’s just another lesson for my personal Reset. Is it part of yours?

SA police investigating second case of alleged criminal child neglect following seven-year-old’s death

South Australian police are investigating a second case of alleged serious criminal neglect following the death of a seven-year-old boy in February.

According to police, the “very sick” boy, whose name was Makai, was taken to hospital by his father on February 10. He died later that day.

The post-mortem found Makai died from “several serious” health issues.

Makai, 7, died in February and now police are investigating it as a case of criminal neglect.

The death was not initially deemed suspicious, however that changed following evidence obtained from various child protection agencies as part of a standard coronial investigation, as well as the opinion of a pediatric expert.

“(Investigators) formed the view that sufficient grounds existed to commence a criminal investigation for an offense of criminal neglect causing death,” Detective Superintendent Des Bray said on Monday afternoon.

Suspected criminal neglect causing death can carry a sentence of life in prison.

“Essentially this offense occurs when a person who has a duty of care to a child fails to take all reasonable steps to protect the child from harm, and the child dies or is harmed as a result of that neglect and the neglect warrants a criminal sanction ,” Bray said.

Police will also investigate possible criminal neglect offenses relating to five of Makai’s siblings, aged between seven and 16.

The two cases involve different families and are unrelated.

Premier announces independent review into government agencies

Premier Peter Malinauskas expressed shock about the death of the two children.

“One is shocking, two is desperately heartbreaking for every parent across the state,” he said.

“If there are people who fail to do their jobs and children are paying the price they will and held to account.”

Malinauskas announced a government review already investigating the death of Charlie will be expanded, and will now be “wholly independent.”

Former police commissioner Mal Hyde will head the review and examine the interaction of every government agency involved with the two children and the families.

“It needs to be led by someone everyone in South Australia has complete confidence to do such a thorough investigation,” Malinauskas said.

It will also examine child protection, including housing authorities, education and the police.

The review will be carried out simultaneously alongside the police investigations.

“What we need to do is make sure there is not a child out there in difficult circumstances vulnerable to losing their life through criminal neglect,” Malinauskas said.
