Google Duo and Meet merger is officially starting with the latest Duo update

We’ve known for a while that Google is planning on merging Google Duo and Google Meet, and the company revealed those plans a few weeks ago. Now, the merger is finally happening, XDA-Developers reports, and a new Google Duo update is rolling out for Android and iOS which finally starts everything.

Google Duo and Meet merger finally starts

Earlier, Google released a Google Duo update that introduced meeting features to the app. Now, a new update is coming for Google Duo on Android and iOS, rolling out in a phased manner. This new update replaces the icon and logo of the app from Duo to Meet. And, on top of that, the update introduces a new notification saying “Duo has been upgraded to Meet”. Of course, the change should be reflected everywhere too – Google has updated the Duo branding on the web version, and now it has been replaced by the Meet icon and name.

The merger is expected to be completed by September. After that, the updated Google Meet app (which would have been the former Duo) with video calling and meeting features will be widely available on Android and iOS.

On top of that, in the next few months, Google plans to redirect the link duo.google.com to meet.google.com/calling.

On the other hand, the legacy Google Meet app will remain (probably, for a certain amount of time) as an app with meeting capabilities but without Duo’s video calling. Google is expected to phase out Meet after the upgrade of Duo has been completed.

The update to Google Duo is now starting in a phased manner, meaning initially a small number of users will be getting it, and a wider rollout will be happening subsequently.

Google Meet and Duo merger will make a single video-calling and meeting platform

Back in the beginning of June, Google announced the big change officially. The merging of the two apps has as a goal to have a single Google platform that is responsible for video calling and meetings, and it will be under the name of Google Meet. Let’s look into a bit more details as to what this merger means.

First off, Google Meet as it is right now is a video platform that’s mainly aimed at video calls with many people (mainly work-related meetings). On the other hand, Duo was a free video chat app, and it has a lot in common with Apple’s FaceTime, basically aimed at one-to-one video chats, rather than large conferences.

The merging between the two apps will happen with an upgrade to Duo, which will become Meet. The current Meet is expected to get the name “Meet Original”. This new Meet (the former Duo) will become the default. Duo will be getting a few new features in consequence.

Here’s what you will be able to do once Duo becomes completely upgraded with Meet features. You will be able to customize virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings, you will be able to schedule meetings, use in-meeting chat, share content live during meeting, and get real-time closed captions for a better accessibility. On top of that, the size of video calls will be upgraded from the current 32 to 100 participants.

And last but not least, you will be getting integration with other Google tools. Those tools include Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages, and others.

During the pandemic, Google Meet’s popularity surged as many people started using it for conferences and work-related video calls and meetings. Because of this growth, the platform became the obvious chose for Google to focus on video and voice options.

Google stated earlier “As part of our mission to build a connected experience for all users, we’re excited to bring our video calling and meeting technologies together into a single, powerful, easy-to-use solution.”

Revealed: Piastri to replace Ricciardo at McLaren in 2023

Alpine reserve driver Oscar Piastri has agreed a deal to race for McLaren in 2023 in place of Daniel Ricciardo, RacingNews365.com you have learned.

The Australian’s future has been the subject of much debate this week, with Alpine releasing a statement on Tuesday saying Piastri would replace the Aston Martin-bound Fernando Alonso at the French squad next year.

However, in a remarkable turn of events, the 21-year-old released a statement of his own just two hours later refuting the claims that he would be racing for the Enstone team in 2023.

Piastri was known to be admired by other teams, having previously been linked with a loan move to Williams, and RacingNews365.com has learned from sources in Australia that Piastri has signed a contract at McLaren that would see him partner Lando Norris and replace compatriot Riccardo at the Woking squad in 2023.

FIA’s contract recognition board, where all F1 contracts are checked for validity, is said to have validated Piastri’s new contract with McLaren at the expense of his existing deal with Alpine.

RacingNews365.com understands that Piastri has a contract with Alpine for 2022, but not for 2023. His 2022 deal is said to contain an option on Piastri’s services for 2023, but that option was not exercised within the required 30 days of signing that contract.

What now for Ricciardo?

The FIA’s contract recognition board ruled that there was no valid contract between Alpine and Piastri before 2023, leaving McLaren free to agree to a deal with the Australian.

Piastri’s deal with McLaren was said to have been finalized on the evening of July 30, before Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin was confirmed on August 1.

Under Formula 1’s regulations, Alpine cannot challenge the board’s decision, as F1 teams have previously unanimously decided that it is the highest body that can rule on contractual matters.

Piastri’s move leaves Ricciardo’s F1 future up in the air. The Australian’s best bet may be replacing Alonso at Alpine, for whom he drove in 2019 and 2020 in his previous guise of Renault.

SA Police allege six senior Comanchero bikies caught in Adelaide park

Six men police say were senior Comanchero bikies have been arrested in Adelaide’s inner-north, in what police say will have a “distinct impact” on the gang’s activities.

The six men, aged between 20 and 55, were arrested at a park on Alexandra Street in Prospect around 7pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Darren Fielke said police believed all six were senior members of the Comancheros.

“What that’s been able to do is significantly hamper and disrupt their activities going forward,” he said.

Chief Inspector Fielke said the gathering of the men was against criminal association laws.

“South Australian legislation prohibits three or more participants of a declared criminal organization to be present in a public place,” he said.

“The penalty for this offense is a mandatory term of imprisonment to a maximum of three years.”

He said it was unclear what the men were doing in the park, but said members of outlaw motorcycle gangs go to public places “to try and get out of the police eye.”

“But they also go there to plan, strategise and discuss what they’re doing,” he said.

“Directions are given, decisions are made. So they go there to further their criminal behavior and their activities.”

A 55-year-old man from Magill, a 37-year-old man from North Adelaide, a 31-year-old man from Northgate, and a 29-year-old man from Brooklyn Park were charged with criminal association offences.

They were all danced with strict conditions not to associate with each other and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on October 7.

A 20-year-old Port Adelaide man was also charged with carrying an offensive weapon and possessing prescription drugs and will appear in court on the same date.

A 38-year-old Prospect man was further charged with breaching an intervention order, arising from an unrelated incident, and was refused bail to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Detective Chief Inspector Fielke said the arrests were a “fantastic” result for police.

“We’ve taken out some of the key decision-makers of the Comanchero of South Australia in this particular incident,” he said.

“So you take away decision-makers and leaders of a group, you have a distinct impact on their day-to-day activities and whatever they may or may not be planning.”

Detective Chief Inspector Fielke said police had been targeting the activities of outlaw motorcycle gangs “more stringently” following recent shootings in Adelaide’s north.

“Clearly there’s been tensions between at least two outlaw motorcycle gang groups in the last few weeks,” he said.

“Those investigations are ongoing.”

Former Adelaide Crow Josh Jenkins speaks out about controversial camp days after Eddie Betts’s book release

Retired AFL player Josh Jenkins has called for a “damning report” by a club doctor following the Adelaide Crows’ controversial 2018 camp to be made public and says he was moved on from the club for being a “problem child.”

Jenkins has spoken publicly about the camp for the first time, backing up former teammate Eddie Betts — who has released a book this week which details the trauma he experienced as a result of the 2018 camp.

As well as outlining his own experience at the camp, Jenkins has called for the findings from a report conducted by club doctor Marc Cesana after the camp to be made public.

“No-one has ever acted on that report, which I know is damning,” Jenkins told Melbourne radio station SEN.

“The report must see the light of day. It’s the only example of a medical professional who had day-to-day dealings with the people and players who were involved. He was concerned about us.

“He expressed his disappointment to me about what happened to us, but never disclosed the details of what he’d discussed with other players.”

In a statement, the Adelaide Crows said the club was not in a position to publicly share private medical information relating to its people.

“While under investigation, the club provided the doctor’s report, without identifying individuals, to both the AFL and SafeWork SA,” it said.

Jenkins also claimed the club’s welfare manager was “iced out” of all discussions, planning and follow-up conversations regarding the camp.

Josh Jenkins and Darcy Fogarty give each other a high five during the Crows' encounter against the Bulldogs.

In detailing the events of the camp, Jenkins said he was one of 10 players and two coaches who were part of the more intensive “group one” version of the camp.

He said he had reservations about taking part in the camp and tried to get himself out of it on numerous occasions.

“I recall us going around the circle and accepting the challenge whilst a couple of players needed to be withdrawn due to injury issues, as well as one player being removed because of some personal trauma he’d recently experienced,” Jenkins said.

“Hearing he was removed because his personal trauma may be too much on top of what we were about to endure had alarm bells ringing inside my head.”

Jenkins, who was raised by his non-biological grandmother, said he provided a “supposed counsellor” with details about his childhood prior to going on the camp.

THE BLUES will welcome back five for Sunday’s trip to the Gabba.

Making a handful of changes from last week’s team, Caleb Marchbank will play his first game since Round 13, bringing up a long-awaited 50 career games in the process.

Fellow inclusion Jack Newnes also celebrates his 50th game in Navy Blue, marking three milestones for the Blues in what will also be Adam Saad’s 150th.

Marc Pittonet has been managed, as has Corey Durdin, who underwent a fitness test today but the decision was made to not play him this week.

Durdin and Pittonet have both been named as emergencies alongside Brodie Kemp and Will Hayes, who have taken the place of Lachie Fogarty after pulling up sore following training today. The medical sub will be announced an hour before the game.

Inside Brittney Griner’s possible new home locked up in Russian prison

WNBA star Brittney Griner was convicted of cannabis possession and smuggling in Russia on Thursday and was sentenced to nine years in prison.

While it’s not clear exactly where she will be serving out her unusually harsh sentence — which she is appealing — Griner may return to the female penal facility where she has spent the last six months outside of Moscow.

The prison, dubbed Correctional Colony No. 1 or IK-1, is no Stalin-era gulag but seems to bleak at best.

The facility is a former orphanage, rebuilt and converted ten years ago into a pretrial detention center and prison where women live out their sentences, the New York Times reported last month.

Located in the village of Novoye Grishino, the overwhelmingly gray and artificially lit prison has its own sewing factory and Russian Orthodox church inside.

Video footage of the facility shows towering gray walls topped with barbed wire and gives a glimpse inside of the sewing factory where dozens of women appear to be working.

A large, rusting statue of Lenin sits in a snow-filled courtyard.

Journalist Yekaterina Kalugina visited Griner while she was at the facility, and told The Times that each day is repetitive and monotonous for the Phoenix Mercury Center.

Each morning inmates wake up, and eat a basic meal in her cell, Kalugina said. They are then permitted to walk around the courtyard. They then spend the rest of the day either reading books or watching Russian television.

Uniquely, the cells have a private washroom but the inmates are only allowed to shower twice a week, she said. They are permitted to order food online and keep food in an available refrigerator.

The prison was also formerly home to Israeli-American Naama Issachar, who was arrested in 2019 and sentenced to over seven years in prison after Russian police said they found marijuana in her luggage while she was connecting flights in Moscow. Vladimir Putin later pardoned her for drug trafficking in 2020.

Issachar was detained as a political pawn between Russia and Israel, just as Griner is with the United States now.

Yaffa Issachar, Naama’s mother, told The Times her daughter spent three months at IK-1. She said filling out the paperwork to enter the prison to visit Naama could take up to four hours followed by a tedious inspection of each item of food she had brought.

She was treated relatively well, her mother said, and was allowed to visit from a rabbi once a week. Issachar recalled the statue of Lenin as well as the sound of guard dogs barking.

Issachar’s mother told The Times her daughter sobbed when she heard about Griner and is worried that as a gay woman she could be subjected to much harsher treatment in conservative Russia.

How to get Cured Armu Sirloin in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Cooking is one of many mechanics in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and players can collect various food items for their recipes as they move along on their journey. One such item is Cured Armu Sirloin, which can be found from Armu, the female counterparts of the Ardun.

youtube-cover

Cured Armu Sirloin should be fairly easy to procure in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. However, some players may not have paid much attention to cooking in the past and may be looking to catch up and find the food items for themselves. Below, players can find a quick guide to procuring Cured Armu Sirloin for their cooking needs.

Collecting Cured Armu Sirloin in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The Llyn Nyddwr Camp is a great place to hunt Armu in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Image via Nintendo)
The Llyn Nyddwr Camp is a great place to hunt Armu in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Image via Nintendo)

Before Xenoblade Chronicles 3 players can harvest meat from Armu, they’ll need to ensure that they’ve reached the second chapter of the story. This will unlock the Fornis Region, which comes complete with various areas where different creatures roam. One such area, Ribbi Flats, is a perfect location to hunt down Armu for their cured meat.

Finding and collecting Cured Armu Sirloin

youtube-cover
  1. For quick access to Armu, head to the Llyn Nyddwr rest camp in the Fornis Region. Right around the area, players should find a large number of Armu roaming the locale along with other creatures.
  2. Players can recognize the Armu by their distinct lack of horns compared to the Ardun. Their heads are more platelike in appearance, and they are also smaller in size compared to their male counterparts.
  3. Kill the Armu. These enemies are particularly low level (level 18), so they shouldn’t be tough to take down and should drop fairly quickly. Since Cured Armu Sirloin is a common drop, most Armu players kill should drop the food item.
  4. Once the Armu in the area have been cleared out, players can use their fast travel to return to the campfire at Llyn Nyddwr. Doing so will refresh the local wildlife, allowing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 players to continue farming the Armu as much as they need until they have all the sirloin they can carry.

In addition to being used in cooking, Cured Armu Sirloin is also quite handy with regard to Collectopaedia Cards. If players have some left over after their farming excursion, they may want to save the cured sirloin for the Collectopaedia. Otherwise, players can also always return to the Fornis Region and take down the Armu for additional sirloins if necessary. As long as players refresh the area with fast travel, they’ll never run out of Armu to defeat and loot.

It’s also important to note that many other food drops in-game can be given a very similar treatment. Simply clear out an area of a certain enemy, collect their drops, then fast travel back to the nearest rest point to respawn the creatures. It then simply becomes a process of lather, rinse, and repeat until players have the items they require.

Kuon Omakase review Sydney Review 2022

Quick, pinch my napkin. Is this real? Have we made it? Am I actually here? After months of trying to land a booking at one of Sydney’s most popular omakase restaurants, it is finally time to experience a level of seafood that can cause fellow food critics to cry in fatty tuna rapture: “Blessed are we for this sliver of moderately dry -aged fish!”

Kuon Omakase opened two years ago in Haymarket’s neon-tinged Darling Square which, depending on who you talk to, is either a soul-sucking boil on the rear end of Chinatown or a family-friendly precinct for bubble tea and Pancakes on the Rocks.

To plonk your own rear end on one of Kuon’s nine seats you need to be hovering over its website at midday on the first (but sometimes fourth) Tuesday of each month when reservations open a few weeks in advance. Refresh, refresh, refresh. Click, click, click. Refresh. Click. Refresh. Click. Throw laptop at wall.

Go-to dish: Blue fin tuna otoro.

Infuriating booking systems are a hallmark of Japanese omakase restaurants, which have been popping up like mushrooms after a downpour over the past two years. The set-menu format – usually about 20 small fishy things for north of $150 – is a smart way to lock in customer spend and staffing requirements. It’s also a fun and mindful way to eat.

After more than a year of failed attempts, I managed to secure a Tuesday night spot at Kuon’s elegant, blond-wood counter. It’s a calming, sparsely decorated room that says, “You’re here to pay attention to the chef hand-molding each piece of sushi.” One very attentive waiter clears plates, pours wine and shows guests to the loo across the laneway.

Before nine mouthfuls of nigiri (raw fish served on vinegared rice), there’s a procession of free-form creations that showcase head chef Jun Miyauchi’s skill at assembling pretty things on nice plates. Seared scampi is a highlight; sweet and delicate and served with perilla leaf and a hunk of avocado, it requires a Certificate IV in Chopsticks to pick up on your first go.

Chawanmushi with dried scallop, sweet corn, lily flower root, potato and edamame.

Steamed chawanmushi custard is a warming lucky dip of dried scallop, turnip-like lily root, edamame and corn; ponzu butter adds luster to a jumbo Pacific oyster served in a shell that looks like a souvenir ashtray; wagyu tenderloin with fatty monkfish liver – the foie gras of the sea – is enhanced by a lick of red vinegar-based sauce. Is it delicious? Oh yeah.

I’m taken less with the optional $25 course of tempura sea-urchin gonads. While I’ve had the occasional spiritual moment with sea urchin when it’s served fresh from deep waters, much of the stuff served in restaurants seems to be chefs having a laugh: “Hey, let’s see how much we can charge for this kraken snot that tastes like a fishmonger’s armpit.”

Then it happens. Thealpha. Theomega. The emperor nigiri. Crowned with a daub of salted kelp, it’s a moment of balance and harmony and pure essence of the ocean, the buttery New Zealand fish firm and sweet against each al dente grain of rice. The heavens open and Gabriel’s trumpet blasts. Lo and behold, this perfect piece of sushi.

Akami zuke (marinated ruby-red prickly pear) nigiri.

If you’re into this sort of thing, these 10 seconds of bliss really help to justify the $230 price tag.

Unfortunately, the imperador was absent from the menu a week later when I sent a photographer as Kuon only uses the best seasonal catch of the day, et cetera, et cetera. Bermagui-caught bluefin tuna is a little more consistent though, and almost as wonderful.

Miyauchi serves three cuts of the noble fish on my visit: marinated ruby-red akami (lean meat from the tuna’s back); luscious, highly marbled otoro (from the fattiest part of the belly) and chutoro, a pale-pink, medium-fatty cut with a flavor that pings every pleasure receptor.

Wagyu tenderloin, monkfish liver, truffle and red vinegar sauce.

There’s also pearly-white southern calamari dotted with caviar, meaty scallops that melt on the tongue, and the sweetest of prawns from New Caledonia.

Many of the jewel-box morsels are seasoned with Nikiri, a secret soy blend brushed just before serving.

Qualms, I have a few. The only white wine by the glass is a dry and textural 2019 Grace Koshu Toriibira from Japan and it’s $27. Sake is better value, but still far from a bargain.

But, well on my way to becoming one of Sydney’s many omakase fanatics chasing seasonal fish and signature specials, I will absolutely return.

How does Kuon stand up to Yoshii’s Omakase at Crown which is – wait for it – $350 per person? I’ll have to let you know when I’ve landed a bloody booking.

Vibes: Revered sushi temple for delicious moments of zen

Go to dish: Bluefin tuna otoro (as part of a set menu)

Drinks: Short and pricey list of mostly French whites, one red and lots of sake

Cost: $230 per person for a 20-course omakase menu
