COVID-19 Australia’s ‘third biggest killer’, new data finds

Lockdowns are over, vaccines are widely available, but COVID-19 simply isn’t going anywhere.

In fact, new data predicts the virus will be the third-biggest killer in Australia for the financial year that ended in July 2022.

The Actuaries Institute said deaths from COVID-19 – as distinct from people dying “with” the virus – reached 7100 for the first seven months of the year.

Only heart disease and dementia are expected to have taken a bigger toll on the Australian population.

COVID-19 will even outstrip deaths from cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes, and lung cancer.

The Institute tallied up the daily reports from state and territory health departments to find 9,550 deaths of people with COVID-19 from January to July.

This included a grim record of 1934 deaths in July alone.

The Institute estimated that of these, COVID-19 could be considered a cause of death in about 7,100 cases.

COVID-19 is also affecting “excess deaths” from other conditions, according to the Institute’s modelling, based on mortality data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

“Excess deaths” are deaths above what would be expected in a non-pandemic year, though COVID-19 is not expected to have directly contributed.

6. Uruguay

The most triple vaccinated countries on Earth

Over the course of the pandemic, excess deaths from all causes have been two per cent higher than expected according to the Institute model – the figure reflecting the lower deaths from respiratory disease during the first two years.

“This is valuable data for our public health policy-makers and should be informing our flexible, safe and pragmatic public health response,” chief executive Elayne Grace said.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams blasts Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after second bus of migrants arrives: ‘This is horrific’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York City Mayor Eric Adams blasted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday after a second bus full of illegal migrants arrived at his doorstep.

Adams gave a news conference Sunday morning at the Port Authority where he greeted an incoming bus of around 40 migrants — only 14 of whom disembarked in the Big Apple.

“This is horrific when you think about what the governor is doing,” Adams said, noting that many of the arriving families did not realize they were coming to New York City.

“We’re finding that some of the families are on the bus that wanted to go to other locations, and they were not allowed to do so,” the mayor said. “They were forced on the bus with the understanding that they were going to other locations that they wanted to go to, and when they tried to explain they were not allowed to do so.”

NPR BLASTS GOP GOVERNORS FOR BUSING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO DC ‘WITH NO PLAN FOR WHAT’S NEXT’

His comments follow the first arrival of around 50 migrants at a Port Authority in New York City on Friday. The bus arrived on the orders of Abbott, who has been shipping border-crossers into liberal cities to bring attention to the issue of illegal immigration in his own state.

Adams has accused the governor of using innocent people “as political pawns to manufacture a crisis.”

On Sunday, he complained that Abbott’s administration was not giving New York City a proper heads-up when the migrants will be arriving.

“They’re not letting us know when the buses are leaving. They’re not letting us know what are the needs of the people on the bus,” Adams said. “They are not giving us any information, so we’re unable to really provide the service to people en route.”

Abbott has also been sending illegal immigrants to Washington, DC, since April to protest the Biden administration’s refusal to act on the border crisis plaguing Texas.

“In addition to Washington, DC, New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said in a statement on Friday.

He added: “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”

Sydney Pork Rolls cop heat for charging its patrons 20 cents just to CUT a roll in half

Cost of living gone crazy? Café cops heat for charging its patrons 20 cents just to CUT a roll in half – but they have a simple explanation

  • Vietnamese restaurant Sydney Pork Rolls has a list of extra surcharges
  • One of them is 20 cents for the restaurant staff to cut your banh mi in half
  • The café told FEMAIL that due to staff shortages they needed to charge extra
  • They separate the halved rolls into different paper bags

An Australian sandwich shop has copped criticism for charging a 20 cent surcharge just to cut their famous banh mi rolls in half.

A photo posted to Reddit showed Vietnamese restaurant Sydney Pork Rolls’ list of surcharges if customers want to add extra salad, chilli, meat, ham, egg, pate and mayo.

A banh mi is traditionally a short baguette with thin, crisp crust and savory ingredients inside, including pickled carrot and cucumber.

Purchasing one banh mi from the store in Haymarket, Sydney, ranges in price from $5.50 and $8.50. Extra salad will set you back 50 cents, while extra meat, ham and egg is $1.50 on top of the regular price.

Even an extra bag will cost you 10 cents, although it’s not clear why you’d need to purchase an extra one.

WHAT IS A BANH MI?

A banh mi is traditionally a short baguette with thin, crisp crust and savory ingredients inside, including pickled carrot and cucumber.

At the bottom of the list is a surcharge titled ‘request roll cut in half’ which totals 20 cents and it has baffled frequent customers with its vagueness.

‘Which way to cut in half?’ one Reddit user commented. ‘Long ways? Sideways? Across ways? So many questions here.’

’50 cents to ask why it costs 20 cents to cut,’ said another.

‘With a two-second cut… that equals $360p/hr. I’m getting into the sandwich biz,’ one comment read.

‘They should ask “would you like to cut it in half?” like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if “you want fries with that”,’ said another.

The sandwich bar told FEMAIL that the purpose of charging the extra 20 cents was because it does take them time to cut the sandwiches just right.

'They should ask "would you like to cut it in half?" like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if "you want fries with that",' said another

‘They should ask “would you like to cut it in half?” like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if “you want fries with that”,’ said another

‘Due to a shortage of staff it does take some time for us to cut it in half so it costs more for us in service time,’ a spokesperson said.

‘When we cut it in half we will wrap them separately so the filling doesn’t come out so this requires extra time and an extra paper bag.’

Others on Reddit agreed with the extra cost and said the restaurant was well within their rights to charge.

‘Getting it cut in half means the two halves are wrapped and packaged separately. It’s completely reasonable to charge extra,’ one user posted.

Samsung introduces Bora Purple to its Galaxy 22 range

Fans of nicely colored phones are in luck: Samsung has announced the Galaxy 22 will soon come in Bora Purple, along with a bonus for those who pre-order the new style.

Named after the Korean word for purple, the Bora Purple Galaxy 22’s color is somewhere between a shade of lilac and lavender. In fact, previous purple-shaded Samsung gadgets include an Orchid Gray Galaxy S8, Lilac Purple Galaxy S9, Violet S22 series, and the Lavender Z Flip 3.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 range locally in March 2022, consisting of the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra devices. As was confirmed at the Samsung Unpacked event earlier in the year, the Galaxy S22 Ultra replaced the phone-tablet hybrid Galaxy Note model. For now, only the base model Galaxy S22 will receive Bora Purple as a new color option, with pre-orders open from now until 10 August. Pre-orders include a pair of purple Galaxy Buds2 – valued by Samsung at $219 – at no extra cost. The Bora Purple S22 range will then go on sale on 11 August.

Bora Purple adds to the Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold colors available for the Samsung Galaxy S22. Although only currently announced for the standard model, Sonia Chang – VP of Global Brand Marketing Group, MX Business at Samsung Electronics – indicated the color will come to more devices in the future.

“Whether you’re a K-pop star or a lifelong purple lover, the Galaxy S22 Bora Purple was made for you,” Chang said. “We are excited to introduce Bora Purple, first for the S22 but also for exciting new Galaxy devices later this year.”

Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall rattled by woman’s foot act on plane

Passengers have to put up with a lot of things on flights, but if there is one thing that no one should have to deal with, it’s bare feet in your face.

Whether it’s near you or in your peripheral vision it’s an act that happens unfortunately all too often.

The latest traveler to be confronted by another flyer’s feet was Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall – and she was so shocked by what she had witnessed on a flight, she recorded a TikTok and shared it with her 1.9 million TikTok followers to also feel her pain.

“Breathtaking views at 38,000 – feet,” she British singer captioned the video.

Stream your news live & on demand with Flash for $8/month and no lock in contracts. New to Flash? Try 1 month free. Offer ends October 31, 2022 >

Jade filmed herself looking stunned before flipping the phone to show a woman a few rows in front with her leg stretched so high, her foot was touching the overhead locker.

In the two days since she posted it, it has already clocked almost five million views and over 13,000 comments with many grossed out by the act.

“I’d be screaming if I’d seen this,” one person wrote.

“I want to cry,” said another, while a third yelled: “WHY DID SHE START POINTING THEM?”

One user described it as “absolutely foul”.

“People are so wrong on a plane – morals, manners and politeness go out the window.”

Others were more concerned for Jade.

“I hope you are OK after experiencing this Jade,” one person joked, to which the star responded: “A little rattled but I’m OK hun.”

“Imagine you did this in a plane and ended up on Jade Thirlwall’s TikTok,” another said.

A cabin crew member also chimed in saying it is her “greatest fear”.

“’Madam, please may you remove your toes from the ceiling?’” she joked.

Others complimented the woman on her manicured toes while some wished they were “that flexible”.

“I’d be p**sing myself trying not to laugh,” one user added.

Some couldn’t believe the man sitting next to her was completely unfazed.

“The fact the person next to them is talking to them like this is a normal occurrence,” they wrote.

However, as much as the passenger’s foot act was the center of attention, fans also couldn’t help but applaud the singer for sitting in economy, particularly given her popular and successful British band Little Mix has a net worth of £48 million ($ A83 million), according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2020.

“Humble queen not flying private,” one fan commented.

“Imagine being on the same plane as Jade Thirlwall,” another wrote.

It is unclear where Jade was flying to or from, but it comes after she had her phone stolen in Ibiza.

“Shoutout to whoever stole my phone. Not having one for a little while was truly bliss. Anyways, here’s me being a basic b**ch in Ibiza a cutla weeks ago,” she said in an Instagram post alongside a selfie on the party island.

It appears Jade is no stranger to flying on commercial flights.

“I was sat next to her in the airport and didn’t want to bother her for a pic. Regretted it ever since,” one fan wrote.

As for the bare feet, it’s also not the first time something like this has happened.

In May, a passenger was left horrified when another flyer shoved their bare feet onto their seat’s armrest during a flight.

The traveler was flying from Melbourne to Adelaide when the incident occurred

A video shows a person looking at the camera in horror before zooming in on the bare feet poking through from the seat behind and on the armrest.

The passenger then appears to notice they are being filmed and quickly whips their feet back.

Experts have also warned travelers to never be barefoot on a plane.

California-based podiatrist Ebonie Vincent, who is also behind the US TV series, My Feet Are Killing Mesaid that being barefoot leaves travelers exposed to bad bacteria.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Cycling | English cyclist slams ‘rubbish’ tactics of winning Aussies

An English cyclist who finished 24th in the women’s road race has accused the Australian team – who won gold and bronze – of riding a “rubbish” race.

Georgia Baker executed a superb ride over the 112km course to win in a time of two hours, 44 minutes and 36 seconds. She was followed home by Scotland’s Neah Evans and another Aussie Sarah Roy, who worked her tail off her to deliver a gold medal for Baker, then held on for bronze.

After finishing well out of the medals, England rider Anna Henderson unloaded on the strategy carried out by the Australian competitors.

“It was a rubbish race. The Australians had a really boring race plan,” she said.

“I thought, ‘You’re strong enough to win the race, and be in the break and win the sprint. So why don’t you race in the race?’

“I wanted it to be active because I knew it was a course for that.

“The Australians just played it really boring, didn’t really make a show of it.”

Ruby Roseman-Gannon, Alex Manly and Roy set the pace for Baker, before the Tasmanian poured out a long surge on route to glory.

Unlike the seeingthing Henderson, Baker spoke glowingly of the Australian tactics.

AS IT HAPPENED: Commonwealth Games Day 10 Results

“The girls did an amazing job covering all the moves,” Baker said.

“For them to nail the final lead out made my ride so easy. I finished with fresh legs and that was the goal. I did the sprint and got my hands across the line.

“If it was going to be a bunch sprint I would be sprinting. If it was going to be an aggressive and hard race where the other nations were going to make it super hard, then potentially Alex would be sprinting.

“We made the call out there with about 20km to go and I was feeling good, so we stuck to the plan and the girls (the Australians) led me out beautifully.”

An Australian has won the women’s road race at the last two Commonwealth Games, with Chloe Hosking capturing gold on the Gold Coast in 2018.

Australian rental crisis: Experts warn of continuing rental crisis amid claims landlords are hiking rents in response to interest rate rises

Experts say Australian renters are bearing the brunt of an industry-wide housing crisis, with some reporting rent rises as much as $150 a week.

But the experts say there is no quick fix and fear the situation is set to worsen.

Watch more on this story in the video above

Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >>

A lack of supply combined with four consecutive interest rate rises has increased the average rental price across Australia’s capital cities by up to $55 over the course of a year.

RMIT Center for Urban Research senior research fellow Dr Megan Nethercote said it was going to get worse before it got better.

“With the latest interest rate rise and subsequent belt-tightening, renters risk their landlords passing on the costs of rising mortgage repayments,” Nethercote said.

“Some renters will lose their homes as landlords sell up.

“The plight of renters looks set to worsen as the knock-on effects of rising interest rates filter through to renters and combine with cost-of-living pressures.

“With almost half of renters on rental assistance already in rental stress, the risk of some renters falling into homelessness is real and high.”

How much are rents rising by?

Rents rose across the board in the year to June, according to Domain’s latest rental report.

The average rent for a house across the capital cities rose from $460 to $515 while units increased from $410 to $460.

RMIT research fellow Dr Louise Dorignon said rent prices were driven by demand. The only way to balance prices was to increase supply, she said.

Tenants are reporting their rent increasing in recent months, coinciding with rate rises.

The latest RBA decision on Tuesday increased the cash rate by 0.5 per cent, effectively adding $174 to monthly repayments for the average Australian mortgage holder.

Is it legal for your landlord to put up rent?

Tenant advocacy groups and industry experts have previously told 7NEWS.com.au there was nothing stopping landlords from passing on that cost to tenants.

“Landlords can increase rent due to an interest rate rise, however, they need to be prepared for tenants to push back if it’s not warranted or it’s excessive,” property management agency :Different head of customer experience Shannyn Laird said.

“Landlords can also increase the rent if the lease is periodic (meaning it’s not fixed) and the tenant hasn’t had a rent increase in a certain time period.”

Weekly rents rose by 2.2 per cent in the three months to June, with yearly growth at seven per cent. Credit: AAP

How often can a landlord put up your rent?

Laws on how frequently a landlord can increase rent vary depending on the Australian jurisdiction.

In Queensland and Western Australia, in most cases, landlords can only increase rent every six months and must give 60 days’ notice.

In Victoria, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, landlords can increase rent once every 12 months and must also give roughly two months’ notice.

In the Northern Territory, landlords can increase rent once every six months and only have to give 30 days’ notice.

Is there a limit to how much your rent can go up?

Your landlord can increase the rent, but there are rules on how much they can increase it by.

In most cases, it must be considered as not being “excessive” or “unreasonable”.

Tenants can complain to their jurisdiction’s Civil and Administrative Tribunal if they feel it is excessive.

What constitutes excessive differs in each jurisdiction. But, generally, rental bodies compare the increase to similar market rents and the physical condition of the property.

What can be done to fix the issue?

In short, quite a bit.

Dorignon said the current apartment stock doesn’t provide sufficient quality to meet the needs of current and future households.

“We need to transition to alternative and innovative modes of housing production, such as using less carbon-intensive materials, which would create more liveable apartment homes and, in the long term, more affordable ones for households,” Dorignon said.

Nethercote said renters represented a “growing cohort” in Australia.

“Renters deserve homes that are affordable, provide adequate security of tenure, are well-maintained and have appropriate provisions for tenant representation,” Nethercote said.

“Meeting these needs requires strong national leadership on housing; they warrant serious deliberation within a new national housing agenda.”

I Can’t Believe It Took Me This Long To Play Slime Rancher

slime rancher is a game that has lived in my Steam wishlist for 5 years. A game that I have had my eye on since it was released, and yet a game that I did not touch until this year.

I know, I know, I am a fool. Please take this opportunity to point and laugh at me, the Court Jester that has fallen ass-first into a freshly-baked pie. My silly jester’s cap jingles with embarrassment. I am, unforgivably, the village idiot.

Alright, stop now. It’s hurting my feelings.

when Slime Rancher showed up on the PlayStation Plus games catalogue, I knew this was it. It was finally time for me to get slimy (sorry). So I downloaded it, opened it up, and haven’t been able to put it down since. It is pure, unadulterated joy.

I’m sure that in the 5 years that this game has existed, there have been people like me that have had this game sitting in their Steam wishlist or simply on their ‘I’ll get to that’ list. In saying this, considering the game is on both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra, here’s your nudge to get it and play it.

As well as that, I’d love to talk a little bit about what I’m hoping for in Slime Rancher 2which is scheduled to hit Early Access in the Spring of this year (so in the next few months!).

My experience as a Slime Rancher

I Can't Believe It Took Me This Long To Play Slime Rancher
Image: Monomi Park

I wake up in a world I am not familiar with. I’ve got a handheld vacuum that looks like that MFin’ thang I keep on me. I live in a desert igloo. It’s slime time, baby.

From the get-go, Slime Rancher is smooth as hell. At first, getting money is a slow process, as I simply have to get all my shit together. But once I’ve set up a little farm on the side and a few slime enclosures, it’s easy breezy.

I love this game. I love video games, and this one is a video game that I love. Plain and simple. The directions are clear, the slimes are cute, and the plorts are plentiful. Every new slime I’ve discovered has become a new friend, even though sometimes they hurt me.

The gameplay is incredibly easy to pick up, and the graphics are the perfect marriage of detailed and stylized. You’re constantly being given new opportunities to do new things in the game, and just when you think you’re plateauing, something new comes up.

The genius decision I made at one point was unlocking The Grotto, planting nothing but Cuberry trees in it, and collecting a bajillion Phosphor slimes and chucking them in there. My life has not known peace since this day, but I’m rolling in plorts.

Slime Rancher has very quickly become a favorite game for me, easily being one of the most unique farming games I’ve ever played, so here’s what I’m hoping for in Slime Rancher 2.

My hopes and dreams for the sequel

Straight off the bat, the trailer already nails the first thing I’m hoping for: more slimes.

You got the bunny slimes, the angler slimes, the butterfly slimes, and the bat slimes. Of course, these are only the new slimes we see in the trailer. I’m sure there’s plenty more slime where they came from. I’m hooked. Plug me in. I’m ready to go.

Honestly, it’s really difficult to think of what could be improved on from Slime Rancher. In my opinion, it’s a pretty perfect game. I’d love it if the new game includes more biomes than the first, but even then the biomes provided in Slime Rancher are great.

Maybe this would make it a bit too easy, but I think it would also benefit from having a bit more variety in terms of where slimes are found. I found myself only mainly being able to find Pink, Tabby, and Rock slimes wherever I went, with the odd rarer slime becoming a Pink Slime hybrid if I weren’t quick enough to suck it up before it gobbled a pink plort up.

I’d also say allowing for a bit more flexibility with where the farming plots can be placed in the game would be great, but I also really love the look of the greenhouse shown in the Slime Rancher 2 trailer.

That all being said, this is major nitpicking considering it’s hard to build on something so perfect. At the end of the day, we just want more slime. More slime. More slime!

I can’t wait to see what Monomi Park has in store for Slime Rancher 2and I highly recommend revisiting Slime Rancher if you haven’t yet. I was a fool, but now my eyes are open, and all they can see are slimes.

Underneath it he wore a lighter-colored shirt with a graphic print across the front.

The twosome — who share daughter Stormi, four, and a six-month-old son whose name hasn’t been revealed — cozied up in a dressing room.

It comes after Kylie showed support for her partner as she and Stormi attended his concert at London’s storied O2 arena on Saturday.

He hit the streets of London in sneakers from his popular collaboration with Nike, the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low.

Travis has been slowly stepping back into the limelight following last November’s deadly Astroworld Festival, at which ten people were killed in a deadly crowd surge during his headlining set.

The music artist’s London concert came days after he announced a seven-day residence in Las Vegas called Road To Utopia.

This summer the rapper and producer began performing again, including taking to the stage for a Fourth of July performance in Coney Island.
