“The Orville” star and creator Seth MacFarlane says that the possibility of a fourth season renewal of the show will likely depend on the streaming numbers that come from the launch of the first three seasons on Disney+ this coming week.
The series famously started out on FOX as a poorly received comedic spin on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Partway through its first season though, it found its jogging as a more old-school Trek-esque show of episodic morality tales – albeit with a bit of extra humor and up-to-date visual effects.
Reviews and fan appreciation rose, and recently the series wrapped its third season (subtitled ‘New Horizons’) on its new home at Hulu. With Disney+ having recently expanded to include more adult-oriented content, “The Orville” will now stream on Disney+ in its entirety starting August 10th.
Speaking with Screen Rant recently about the show’s future, MacFarlane says the show’s chances of being renewed are about 50-50 right now. He adds that he has nothing but praise for all the support he’s received at Hulu for the show’s recent third season release and the hope is the Disney+ release will allow the series one last push to a whole new audience only partly aware of the series:
“I have sensed a real groundswell of support from within the Hulu branch and the Disney branch. Of course, it’s a business, so the show has to be something that justifies its own existence and, at the end of the day, that’s really going to be what determines a season 4.
But the folks at Hulu and Disney have sure as hell given us the best possible chance of that happening, so it’s really all up to the audience now. I am excited for the Disney+ launch, because that’s an entirely new audience that I think is maybe dimly aware of the show but maybe doesn’t really know exactly what it is.
I think that’s been the conundrum of The Orville for a while is that people kind of put it in a box based on the initial perceptions of the show since 2017 and 99% of the time when people sit down to watch it, their expectations are completely upended, and the show speaks for itself in that way, I’m confident that it can do that. The real challenge is just going to be getting eyeballs on it so that people have the chance to discover that for themselves.”
One complication is the cast’s commitments to other projects, including MacFarlane himself in the title role in Peacock’s upcoming “Ted” prequel series. Even if a renewal order is handed out, there could again be a long gap between seasons.
Minjee Lee has emerged from a day of high drama without the major spoils but with another one of golf’s most prestigious awards.
Lee fell tantalizingly short of becoming Australia’s first female golfer to capture the world-number-one ranking following a tie for fourth at the Women’s British Open in Scotland.
The Perth ace needed to win or finish second, but wound up three shots behind triumphant South African Ashleigh Buhai, who denied In Gee Chun in an epic, tension-filled sudden-death play-off that stretched four holes and ended under fading light on Sunday.
Buhai almost threw away the tournament with a disastrous triple-bogey seven on the par-4 15th before regaining her nerve to land the biggest title of her career.
After starting the day with a five-stroke leader, the 33-year-old finished at 10-under-par 274 following a closing 4-over 75.

Chun carded a 70 but could not find the birdie needed in the play-off to claim a fourth career major.
Japan’s Hinako Shibuno, the 2019 Open champion, was outright third at 9-under, two shots ahead of Lee (69), Swede Madelene Sagstrom (71) and Ireland’s Leonie Maguire (66).
While Lee remains world number two and fell short in her quest to land a second major of the year, the 2022 Women’s US Open champion clinched another coveted accolade and further narrowed the gap on the top-ranked Jin Young Ko, who missed the cut.
The 26-year-old secured the Annika Major Award as the season’s best-performing player at the five annual major championships.

As well as her victory at Pine Needles and joint-fourth on Sunday, Lee was co-runner-up at the Women’s PGA Championship, 12th at the Chevron Championship and 43rd in the defense of her 2021 Evian Championship win in France.

“I’ve had some really great finishes at the majors,” she said.
“I feel like I’m trending in the right direction and pretty excited for the rest of the season.”
Lee’s Australian fellow, Steph Kyriacou, closed with a 71 to tie for seventh at 5-under in an impressive encore to her tie for 12th last year at Carnoustie.
Kyriacou was 3-under for her round through five holes before three bogeys scuppered her chances as the 21-year-old Sydney talent somewhat ruefully settled for her best finish at a major.
“I played pretty solid the whole week. Today was a bit yucky. I hit maybe three bad shots that cost me more than three shots. But yeah, still lots of positives to take,” Kyriacou said.
“Still a couple things to work on but, yeah, everything for me is trending, which I can’t be too mad about that.
“I can’t really let that define my whole week so I definitely have confidence in myself.
“It might sound a bit arrogant but I think I’m going to win majors. It’s just a matter of time I feel.”
After starting the weekend as the leading Australian and right in contention, Hannah Green shared a 35th spot at 2-over following a disappointing 75 finish.
Perth scientists have breathed life into a decades-old German mystery of an unknown man’s body found floating in the North Sea, using the adage “you are what you eat” to discover he may be from Australia.
The man, dubbed “The Gentleman” by investigators in 1994 after his body was found by police off the coast of the Helgoland, a German archipelago, was weighed down by cast iron cobbler’s feet.
He earned the nickname due to his smart clothing; a wool tie, British-made shoes, French-made trousers and a long-sleeve blue dress shirt.
The case has baffled German police for 28 years, but criminologists and forensic scientists from Murdoch University may have helped to unravel the mystery after they ran new tests.
They found the man spent most of his life in Australia. Investigators in the 1990s determined he was 45 to 50 years old.
The discovery marks the last day of Australia’s National Missing Person’s Week on Saturday.
Scientists made the discovery by following the principle of “you are what you eat”, performing an isotope ratio analysis of The Gentleman’s bones.
Differences in climate, soil and human activity across the globe change the isotopic compositions of food, water and even dust – reflected in the isotopic compositions of human tissue.
Analysis showed the man likely spent most of his life in Australia. Researchers from overseas universities were recently also able to obtain a DNA profile of the man.
There’s hope it could match with DNA being collected as part of Missing Person’s Week, where authorities have been calling on Australians to come forward for testing to help solve some of the nation’s cold cases.
Brendan Chapman, one of the directors of Murdoch University’s Cold Case Review team, said it was an unbelievable discovery.
“What are the chances that from this small collection of universities working on this case, one would be from the country where the man originated?” he said.
Investigators have been slowly piecing together The Gentleman’s past for years.
The iron tools he was weighed down with were only recently disclosed by police, his shoes are expensive, and his distinctive green, yellow and blue striped tie may signal he belonged to a specific organization.
Vice President Harris cast her 25th tie breaking vote with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act on Sunday, moving her within six votes of the almost two-century-old record held by former Vice President John Calhoun.
The Constitution stipulates the vice president also serves as president of the Senate and has the authority to break ties, which has occurred with some regularity over the past year and a half given the 50-50 makeup of the upper chamber.
Harris has already cast more tiebreakers than almost any other vice president, except for John Adams and Calhoun, who served from 1825 to 1832.
Calhoun has held the record of 31 tie-breaking votes since his tenure as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. John Adams, who served as vice president for nearly eight years under George Washington, cast 29 tiebreakers.
Harris, however, has cast more tiebreakers than Adams or Calhoun at the equivalent times in their vice presidencies.
She has primarily broken ties to confirm President Biden’s nominees, although she has also appeared at the Senate dais for other 50-50 splits, like when she voted to begin debate on the American Rescue Plan.
Harris’ role as a tie breaker came into the spotlight again on Sunday, when she broke the tie to advance a long-awaited $740 billion bill that includes provisions to raise corporate taxes, confront climate change, lower prescription drug costs and reduce the federal deficit. Her vote for her was met with applause from the chamber.
The bill’s passage in the Senate first required the support of all 50 Democrats given all Republicans were united in opposition.
The Biden administration and Senate Democratic leadership had been hoping to pass a larger reconciliation package last year, dubbed Build Back Better, but the bill was doomed after Sen. Joe Manchin (DW.Va.) declined to support the package.
Manchin had been negotiating behind closed doors in recent months for the slimmed-down reconciliation package, which passed the Senate on Sunday after gaining the support of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) this week, the final Democratic holdout.
The reconciliation package now heads to the House for consideration.
How often Harris casts a deciding vote during the remainder of Biden’s term will largely depend on the outcome of this year’s Senate midterm elections.
Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has predicted a close race for the Senate majority.
“I think it’s going to be very tight. We have a 50-50 nation. And I think when this Senate race smoke clears, we’re likely to have a very, very close Senate still, with us up slightly or the Democrats up slightly,” McConnell said Wednesday on Fox New’s “Special Report.”
Australians are clearly keen to embrace some of ‘la dolce vita’ (the sweet life) after being cooped up with Covid restrictions, with searches for Italian holiday destinations now rivaling those of more common destinations.
New research conducted by Booking.com shows that Italian cities have clambered their way into the top 10 searched international destinations for the season alongside fan favorites London, Singapore, Bali and Queenstown, New Zealand.
And while most of the European summer has passed, it’s not too late to joint the party in Italy, check out of a rooftop bar in Greece or take in the Tapas in Spain with August and September set to be memorable months – with plenty of heat – for Aussies booking travel abroad.
International fashion distributor Shaun Birley has shared his foolproof guide for nailing European summer, starting with doing your own research.
New research conducted by Booking.com suggests that two major European locations clambered there way into the top 10 searched international destinations for the season (stock image)
‘It’s important to search for accommodation that is in close proximity to all the places you want to eat, drink, discover and capture for the gram – it makes a holiday experience far more convenient and of course much more fun,’ he said.
‘A great way to do this is by using the map feature when using the Booking.com platform, as some hotels have multiple locations and you don’t want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere, with nowhere to snack on that panini, drink your Aperol or walk around discovering new places and meeting new faces.’

Mr Birley’s next tip is to pack appropriately using specialized packing cubes so you can separate your clean and dirty laundry throughout the holiday.
‘Well, these are a lifesaver. Not only can you make sure that all your tops are in one section and pants in another, but you can also use these to separate clean and dirty clothes,’ he said.
‘Super convenient and a game changer, especially if you’re on a fast-paced holiday, jumping around from destination to destination. Better yet, packing blocks help you plan outfits, so you are ready to go as soon as you land.
For those worried about losing their luggage abroad, consider using the packing cubes to take carry on only so you’re never without your most prized possessions.
If you’re up for a bit of sightseeing Mr Birley suggests booking a walking food tour that allows you to take in the key points of a city with delicious delicacies promised along the way.

‘It’s such a great way to meet new people and get to know the locals. Not only are you enjoying walking around the city but eating foods that you may have never seen or heard of before,’ he said.
‘These tours also provide you with an opportunity to question your local guide about events and iconic areas that may not be mentioned in your travel book or advertised online.
‘We know so many people are getting travel inspiration from social media today, so make sure you share your top tours and attractions on your socials so others can add it to their list.’
To ensure you’re never caught with a flat phone battery and unable to Google your next port of call, Mr Birley recommends packing a power board within your luggage.
‘We know how important technology, especially over the past couple years, has proven to be,’ he said.
‘That’s not to mention the importance of it when it comes to traveling – using your smartphone for maps or Googling your next stop.

‘If you bring a power board with you, it means you don’t have to purchase and lug around six adapters. You can charge all your devices at once.
‘Having all your tech charged is essential to being able to create and post content on the go in real time. And whilst we are talking tech, hot tip – do NOT forget to automatically backup your smartphone once you connect to Wi-Fi so you don’t lose any of your amazing holiday photos. It’s in the settings for both Android and iPhone.’
To snap the best photos of your trip Mr Birley opts for low light settings, usually in the afternoon or at ‘golden hour’, so there is no fierce sun on your face – or need to squint.
‘I love using the InShot app for transitions, color grading and editing on the go, giving a crisp finish no matter where you are,’ he said.
‘Make sure you also capture video footage with Reels and TikToks as they are a great way to look back on your holiday.’
Kesha has stepped out in a completely see-through outfit for a dinner date with her mother.
The US singer, 35, dressed down for a dinner in Santa Monica, California with mum Pebe Sebert, where she was seen wearing a daring, sheer black dress.
the tik tok songstress was photographed in the risque long-sleeve ensemble, which featured sheer fabric, exposing her bare chest and a black G-string.
At one stage, Kesha put on a coat while posing for waiting photographers with her mother, who looked glamorous in a billowing white kaftan.
The mother-daughter duo had enjoyed an intimate dinner at the popular Giorgio Baldi restaurant in the California city.
Kesha, who’s last music release was in 2020 with her fourth album High Roadhas recently been busy promoting her new TV series, Conjuring Kesha.
She made an appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego last month to talk about the show, which follows the singer on her quest to explore haunted houses and locations.
speaking with comicbook.comKesha said making the eerie show “changed [her] entire life.”
“Making this show genuinely changed my entire life, because I’ve had these paranormal experiences and I think intuitively I knew they were real, but also questioned if other people had these experiences,” she said.
“All I know is that I absolutely am open to the possibility of it all. I think it’s shortsighted to say anything for sure doesn’t exist.”
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has slammed his old clubs “unacceptable” effort to sign new players, after they sunk to a 113-year-old on Sunday night.
After a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season, the Red Devils failed to make their mark in the summer transfer market.
United have signed just three players under new manager Erik ten Hag, including 30-year-old Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are among the list of players who have left Old Trafford during the English summer, while Cristiano Ronaldo is heavily rumored to follow suit.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was benched for United’s season opener against Brighton on Monday morning (AEST), and has reportedly requested a transfer away from Old Trafford.
Manchester United are now rumored to be chasing the services of former West Ham and Stoke striker Marko Arnautovic, who played under ten Hag at Dutch club Twente 13 years ago.

However, Untied have reportedly had their bid for the 33-year-old rejected by Bologna.
After a quiet transfer window, Neville has called United the “easiest team to play” in the Premier League after their history making loss to Brighton.
“Anyone who has watched those Manchester United players he has been handed will recognize that is a familiar performance and the people above him should have known that it was an unacceptable situation to hand Erik ten Hag that squad,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It needed improving more than it has been. There is still time in the window but he needed three or four weeks more to work with them.
“Every coach comes in thinking they can do better than the last coach with the players at his disposal as they believe they are a better coach and that is probably the case with this. But the reality is, he’s seen what those players are capable of today.

“I don’t think any Manchester United fan or pundit that has watched this team over the last 12 months, with the same players playing in the same positions, expected anything different than what we saw.
“The reality is those players need replacing or supported more by better players.”
It was a forgettable season opener for the Red Devils who hadn’t lost to Brighton at home in a competitive match, dating back to the FA Cup in 1909.
The first-ever meeting between the two clubs was a 1-0 win to United at Manchester’s Bank Street on January 16 of that year.
While a new season brings optimism and excitement, but frustration began to mount from the opening whistle for United fans after the hosts came frightening close to conceding inside 30 seconds.
But after missing chances of their own throughout the first half, the Red Devils went behind 2-0 after two quick goals to Pascal Gross.
While an own goal from midfielder Alexis Mac Allister gave the hosts a glimmer of hope with 20 minutes to play, it just wasn’t to be.

Premier League icon Paul Scholes took aim at United after a “shocking” first-half set his old club up for defeat.
United may have controlled the match with 62.9 per cent of possession, but only managed two more shots on target than their English rivals.
Scholes believes the Red Devils need to improve their midfield as he called out two underperforming players.
“(Scott) McTominay was always trying to run with the ball, ridiculous. The quality in the middle of the pitch was really poor,” Scholes said.
“The quality in the middle of the pitch was nowhere near good enough but we’ve seen that for the last few years with these two players.
“With Fred and McTominay, he (ten Tag) is going to have to go with just one of them but eve none of them is probably too many.
“Fred gives the ball away all the time and McTominay’s trying to run with the ball constantly and then gives it away. Pass it to your best players! It’s not that difficult. It’s criminal on a day like today.”
Haaland scores twice in EPL debut! | 01:07
Two United fans reached their boiling points during the match, as they began to fight in the South Stand at Old Trafford.
Nearby fans watched on in shock as the pair began to wrestle with each other, with one of the men appearing to grab the other by the throat.
Another person seemed to step between the two men in an attempt to break up their row, as more supported turn to face the pair instead of the match.
A third Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, has also been critical in saying the “DNA” of the club wasn’t there anymore.
“You talk about pre-season, I saw a lot of PR nonsense coming out of Manchester United during the games and I still saw the same problems,” Roy Keane told Sky Sports.
“It’s the same characters, same personalities, especially in midfield.
“There are elements of talent in the squad but when they have setback they don’t deal with it. I go back to the DNA of the club and culture at the training ground, it’s not there. I don’t see personalities, I don’t see characters.
“It’s not all about throwing money at it but if these players aren’t up to it and good enough for Manchester United.”
Meanwhile, cross-town rivals Manchester City got their title defense off to a dream start with a 2-0 win over West Ham.
Star recruit Erling Haaland scored two goals on his Premier League debut for the Citizens.
If endorsed by the council, the updated controls will apply to designated areas that have an existing night-time activity or potential to grow as night-time areas – including parts of the Parramatta CBD, Harris Park, Epping, Westmead, Granville and Wentworth Point .
Davis said services such as hairdressers could be made more accessible under the proposed rules.
“The times people are available to go and get a haircut aren’t in the standard nine-to-five hours,” Davis said. “[Extending trading hours] allows people to access services at other times of the day.”
While broadly supportive of the proposed changes, The Sun-Herald spoke with several hairdressers in Parramatta who indicated they wouldn’t stay open later until they saw more late-night customers.
Davis said the proposal would future-proof Parramatta and give businesses the option to expand trade in a way that suits their customers.
“It’s that point of difference which will give them a distinct economic advantage,” she said.
Parramatta Chamber of Commerce president Luke Magee agreed that extending trading hours for businesses such as hairdressers and nail salons would make it easier for parents to access these services.
The new rules are hoped to breathe new life into Parramatta’s CBD. Credit:Dean Sewell
“People can put their kids to bed, have dinner and just go out and get the beauty treatment done after the family is sleeping,” he said.
But Magee said it was important to have a sensitive approach to regulation that accounted for both the need to foster nightlife and limit noise, particularly in residential areas.
“If buildings aren’t built to a high specification with double glazing and all that, and you’ve got nightclubs across the road, that’s certainly an issue,” he said. “It’s about finding a balance.”
With its robust student population, Davis said encouraging a night-time economy in Parramatta would also give young people more to do.
“People want that ability to jump in the lift, go downstairs and have a great experience.”
“We need to provide those night-time experiences that are affordable, diverse, vibrant, safe and which interest people under 35,” she said. “[Young people] want to go out, go shopping and eating and have good entertainment facilities all in one place.”
University of New England director Robert Field said extended trading hours would also provide additional job opportunities for students.
“When the economy changes and works longer hours, it allows more job opportunities for people as well,” he said. “Extending the night-time economy allows for more flexibility in work.”
While an extension to trading hours wouldn’t directly impact the university, which already opens until 9pm on weekdays to cater for a predominantly adult student population, Field said the update would have indirect benefits such as helping people to avoid peak hours on public transport.
“If you can avoid those super busy times by staying back a bit later, accessing the benefits of extra hours [such as] shopping, dining or studying, you’re not going to have to be on a jam-packed train.”
With a population that has grown 10 per cent in five years, and many living in high-density housing, Davis said there’s demand for convenient access to a range of services in Parramatta.
“People want that ability to jump in the lift, go downstairs and have a great experience whether that’s going to their public library, meeting with their friends to play pool or grabbing a coffee,” she said.
Davis said it was important to cater to the diverse needs of Parramatta’s communities but also to attract visitors from other suburbs with its unique offering.
“People in Parramatta really want their diversity reflected in the offerings available to them, from the food they eat to the clothes they’re buying and access to great public art and cultural events,” she said.
“People can go to North Sydney and Chatswood if they just want shiny towns but Parramatta has a wonderful mix of multicultural communities, great parklands and employment opportunities,” Davis said.
While she acknowledged that changes to the control plan wouldn’t immediately translate to a 24-hour economy, Davis said there was a clear appetite for reform.
“This isn’t going to be something that happens overnight, but it will provide certainty for development applications,” she said.
“Our growing community has got a taste for change. They want to see those possibilities and those opportunities for a diverse and vibrant night-time economy, not just across the CBD but across the local government area.

Jreij said for Parramatta to remain the second-biggest CBD in NSW, the city needed to look to places such as New York and London, which have a thriving nightlife. “We really have to look and think big for Parramatta’s future,” he said.
If the plan is approved, the updated controls will take effect within 28 days of endorsement.

Fifty-four asylum seekers arrived in New York Friday onboard a bus from Texas, according to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
Abbott’s office indicated that New York is now a designated “drop-off location for the busing strategy as part of the governor’s response to the Biden administration’s open border policies overwhelming Texas communities,” according to a statement released Friday announcing the arrival of the first bus .
“It’s unimaginable, what the governor in Texas has done,” Adams told reporters Sunday. “When you think about this country, a country that has always been open to those who were fleeing persecution and other intolerable conditions, we’ve always welcomed that. And this governor is not doing that in Texas, but we are going to set the right message, the right tone, of being here for these families.”
A fierce critic of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, Abbott began sending hundreds of willing migrants on buses to Washington, DC, earlier this year as an affront to the administration. Abbott’s office has said that “to board a bus or flight, a migrant must volunteer to be transported and show documentation from DHS.”
More than 5,100 migrants have arrived in Washington from Texas on more than 135 buses, according to the governor’s office.
“In addition to Washington, DC, New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said Friday.
Manuel Castro, commissioner of the mayor’s immigrant affairs office, told CNN New York is a right-to-shelter city, so anyone who needs shelter may receive it. However, the city has “exhausted” its regular shelter space, so it has leased additional space at hotels, he said.
“These are families, these are people,” Castro said. “They have a right to be here as asylum-seekers and New York is here to welcome them. They frankly need a lot of support. They’ve traveled a long way to get here.”
Some migrants did not want to come to New York, mayor says
Around 40 people were expected to arrive Sunday, Adams said, adding that it is not known if others got off the bus before it arrived in New York.
Some of the migrants who did arrive Sunday told the mayor they had relatives in other cities and did not plan to come to New York.
Some families “wanted to go to other locations and they were not allowed to do so,” Adams said Sunday. “They were forced on the bus with the understanding that they were going to other locations that they wanted to go to, and when they tried to explain, they were not allowed to do so.”
Families whose desired destination was not New York said it took three days to get to the city from Texas, according to Castro, who also met with them, noting many “were hungry and thirsty, with small children.”
Adams issued an emergency declaration last week to “rapidly procure shelter and other services” for people seeking asylum in the city. Those who want to stay in New York will go to shelters, and volunteer groups will be helping “those who want to go somewhere else” to travel to another location, the mayor said.
New York Taxi Workers Alliance executive director Bhairavi Desai told CNN they had 19 yellow cabs and Uber cars ready to voluntarily transport refugees arriving from Texas from the bus stop to shelters or to homes of friends or family in the area Sunday morning.
“Everyone we saw looked exhausted by the journey. Many people looked relieved to finally reach safety but there were also people crying from the trauma,” Desai said.
“It’s wrong, and in our melting pot city, it won’t work,” Desai added. “We wanted to do our part to let new neighbors know that they’re welcome here, and in NYC there are people who will help.”
Around 4,000 asylum seekers have entered the New York City shelter system since late May, according to Adams, who said the influence is the primary driver of around a 10% increase in the city’s Department of Homeless Services’ census. New York’s shelter system is currently receiving more than 100 asylum seekers looking for some form of housing per day, on average, according to the homeless service’s department.
CNN has asked the mayor’s office for the total number of migrants the city is processing from Texas.
Generally, eleven migrants are processed by federal authorities and released from custody, they are allowed to move throughout the country while they go through immigration court proceedings. They are often released in Texas and other border states, and then continue on journeys to other parts of the country.
An immigration judge will ultimately decide if they are allowed to remain in the US or be deported.
He said Australia was lagging places like Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, where these features have become more standard in homes. Many of his clients already ask for similar “smart home” upgrades.
He said many of his clients were leaving Shanghai and relocating to Sydney but were surprised by what was on offer, telling him: “I didn’t come to Sydney to downgrade. Can you find me properties with these features?”
Envirotecture director and architect Andy Marlow said the majority of Australian homes under construction were already out of date.
“These buildings are not fit for purpose now, and they are definitely not fit for purpose in the future. We’re baking in a lot of carbon emissions,” Marlow said.
The embodied carbon (the energy produced to build the homes) and the operational carbon (the energy produced to run the homes) were contributing to emissions and creating health problems, he said, which also creates the “lock in effect”.
“It’s immensely scary that people live in buildings that don’t work. We get cranky when the ferry doesn’t work but we’re spending billions on houses that don’t work.”

“When you build something that is substandard, which is basically our entire housing stock, it is very unlikely someone will fix that soon,” he said.
Marlow said the key to future-proofing homes was building healthy and comfortable dwellings through good insulation, good quality air and good reliable ventilation, noting that products and designs already exist for these features, such as double-glazed windows, which should become standard.
“Single glazing is just crap. Science shows us that single glazing will get condensation on it, it’s just physics,” he said, which creates mold and asthma.
“Everything has been solved, every technical problem has been fixed. There’s a wonderful bit of evidence out of California, where they mandated double glazing and within nine months it was cheaper than single glazing.

“It’s immensely scary that people live in buildings that don’t work. We get cranky when the ferry doesn’t work, but we’re spending billions on houses that don’t work,” he said.
Professor Alan March, from the University of Melbourne’s school of design planning, said Australia’s housing stock was out of date because of the structural problems with a property market that views homes as a vehicle for wealth creation rather than for good shelter.
“The land value and the overall value is so inflated that people are not so interested in the interior and actual benefit they receive from the structure itself as to secure the number, the numeric value, and so that changes the nature of the housing market towards wealth building, or just avoidance of renting,” March said.

“We then have structures that are not built to last long periods of time, even though we live in them for a long period of time, so they go through repeated renovations, which is not uncommon. Then energy saving features, garbage disposal units and these aspects are not particularly integrated into our structures.”
He said the mass home building market constructed almost identical homes across Australia, despite the continent’s vast, varying climate.
“One future-proofing feature that is potentially very important is heat wave resilience and adaptability,” he said. “Natural ventilation, good quality ventilation, the ability to retrofit cooling systems if they’re not already there or integrate solar panels with batteries.”
He said while the building code could be modified to build homes that were more amenable to different climates, the building and construction industry was conservative and would remain so, given the recent COVID-induced financial challenges.
