99 percent of Netflix subscribers haven’t tried its games yet

As Netflix continues to build out its portfolio of games, the streamer’s seeing less than 1 percent of its subscribers interact with them on a daily basis. According to data obtained by CNBC from app tracking group Apptopia, Netflix’s games average 1.7 million users per day, a sliver of Netflix’s 221 million subscribers globally.

Apptopia found that Netflix’s games have been downloaded a total of 23.3 million times since Netflix announced a push into mobile gaming in November 2021. The streamer started with just five games, a collection that it has since expanded to over two dozen titles, including a game based on the Exploding Kittens card game, the League of Legends spin off Hextech Mayhemand the strategy title Into the Breach. Netflix also plans on adding a game based on its original series The Queen’s Gambit.

Netflix wants to double its current offering of games to 50 titles by the end of 2022 and has acquired three indie game studios to help it meet this goal. Previous reports show Netflix’s game downloads slowly growing over the course of the (almost) one year that the games have been available.

In January, Apptopia recorded 8 million total game downloads, while data from analytics firm Sensor Tower showed total downloads hitting 13 million in June. Subscribers on Android devices can access and download the games for free from either the Netflix app or Google Play Store, while Apple’s rules require Netflix to direct users on Apple devices to the App Store for downloads.

Netflix reported losing subscribers for the first time in over a decade in April and lost 1.3 million more globally between May and the end of June. The streamer’s collection of games could play an increasingly important role as Netflix reverses the trend on subscriber losses and finds ways to make more money from those subscribers beyond raising prices on the video services they already have. Netflix already plans on rolling out an ad-supported tier by the end of this year and is also exploring ways to crack down on password sharing.

Disclosure: TheVerge recently produced a series with Netflix.

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer’s claim shows Daniel Ricciardo has options, Mercedes link, Oscar Piastri fiasco, McLaren

Don’t worry about Daniel Ricciardo, he’s going to be fine.

The Aussie F1 veteran became the story of the F1 mid-year break when it was reported he was being moved on for his 21-year-old countryman Oscar Piastri.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The news erupted last week after Fernando Alonso blindsided the F1 world when he jumped into Sebastian Vettel’s vacated seat at Aston Martin for 2023.

Alpine then announced Piastri would be the man to replace Alonso, only for the Melburnian to reject the seat, a bold move for a man who’s never driven an F1 car in anger.

But the news leaked over the weekend that it was Ricciardo’s seat Piastri was set to take, while McLaren were set to cut the eight-time race winner loose for the prodigious youngster — a move which would reportedly cost McLaren $21m in a payout for Ricciardo .

It leaves Ricciardo’s career at a crossroads after two largely miserable seasons in papaya, outside of the 2021 win at Monza.

Ricciardo had been regularly beaten by teammate Lando Norris and struggled to get his head around the car.

The 32-year-old left Renault for McLaren, but could return to the Enstone unit now branded Alpine, who are open to the move.

Alpine still believes it has an iron-clad deal with Piastri and are still planning for the young Aussie to take the seat, despite reports the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board had cleared Piastri’s move.

Although Alfa Romeo rookie and former Renault Academy driver Guanyu Zhou said he was glad he wasn’t “stuck” at Alpine, team boss Otmar Szafnauer believes his team is well placed to attack the top teams.

Speaking regarding Alonso’s decision, Szafnauer, the former Aston Martin boss, said: “I know both teams well,” he said. “I think I know (them), because I spent 12 years at the other team, better than I know all the individuals here just yet.

“And I know since I’ve left in December, they’ve hired some more people, some of which I was a part of recruiting, including Dan Fallows, and Eric Blandin from Mercedes. So I know what they’re trying to do.

“And I know that the people that are there, and I know this team here, and both teams have great potential.

“But as we sit here today, this team is performing at a much higher level. It’s hard to predict the future, but in the near future, for sure this team will continue to perform at that level, if not better.”

Alpine is currently fourth in the constructors’ standings on 99 points, behind only Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes, and four points in front of McLaren. Aston Martin is ninth on 20 points.

Szafnauer also said Alpine weren’t done coming fourth.

“We have an internal program called Mountain Climber, and that’s to hire an additional 75 people in strategic areas that will help improve the capabilities of this team,” he said.

“And along with the 75 people, there’s also tools that we are improving now, some simulation tools, a new simulator, expanded capacity in manufacturing, some upgrades to our wind tunnel, all with the focus on being able to win in 100 races.

“So those things are still happening here. And they’re happening fast. We’re already at a level of 850 people here.

“So I am confident that we can outdo the team that Fernando is going to, in the time period that he will be there.”

Ricciardo scored 119 points in Renault in 2020, the best by a driver since the manufacturer’s return to the sport in 2016.

There’s no doubt he would be a strong option for Alpine.

However, in an interview with The confidentialSzafnauer said he would narrow the shortlist to four drivers, revealing he had fielded “like 14 calls from drivers who are interested”.

ESPN’s Nate Saunders also said Ricciardo would “still command the attention of teams up and down the grid” adding he is “one of the most marketable drivers on the grid at the moment and one who is especially popular in America”.

He added four teams had contacted him in the past fortnight prior to the news McLaren were moving to ax the Western Australian.

The Expresseven suggested a pay out from McLaren to Ricciardo and a forced season on the sideline could open up Mercedes.

Ricciardo has long coveted a seat with Ferrari or Mercedes and said the Silver Arrows had “always had an eye” on Ricciardo.

The 37-year-old seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton has long been linked with retirement.

In 2019 when Ricciardo joined Renault, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said he had caught their eye but didn’t end up pulling the trigger.

“We always had an eye on Daniel… we really like him in here,” Wolff said at the time. “It’s just the mentality in Mercedes – I sometimes feel if you’re happy in your relationship it is not always easy (to change).

“It is like being married, you need to be 100 per cent behind it. It was not a lack of interest, it was just that we were in a happy relationship and there was no need to flirt with another woman at that stage.”

Is it likely? Not at this stage, but stranger things have happened.

Alex Jones’ texts have been turned over to the January 6 committee, source says

CNN

Approximately two years’ worth of text messages sent and received by right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones have been turned over to the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, a person familiar with the matter told CNN on Monday.

The messages were handed over to the committee by Mark Bankston, the attorney who represented two Sandy Hook parents who successfully sued Jones in Texas and won nearly $50 million in a civil trial that concluded last week.

Bankston would only tell CNN that he is “cooperating with the committee.” The select committee declined to comment.

During the trial, Bankston revealed that one of Jones’ lawyers had “messed up” and inadvertently sent him the two years of text messages. Bankston also said during the trial that the January 6 committee had expressed interest in the material.

Jones’ attorney Federico Andino Reynal asked the judge in the case to order Bankston to destroy the material and not transmit it to the House committee, but the judge declined.

“I’m not standing between you and Congress,” Judge Maya Guerra Gamble told Bankston when asked about sending Jones’ texts to the committee. “That is not my job. I’m not going to do that.”

The source wouldn’t provide details of the exact timeframe of when Jones sent and received the texts in question.

Jones was a central player on January 6. He was on restricted US Capitol grounds that day, riling up protesters, though he did not enter the building itself. He has rejected any suggestion that he was involved in the planning of violence, and claims he tried to prevent people at the Capitol from breaking the law.

Jones testified before the January 6 committee earlier this year, but he later said on his show that he repeatedly asserted his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent during the closed-door deposition.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat who sits on the committee, said Sunday on CNN that the committee was still waiting to see the texts and was interested to learn more about Jones’ role in the events at the Capitol.

“Well, we know that his behavior did incentivize some of the January 6 conduct and we want to know more about that,” Lofgren said. “We don’t know what we’ll find in the texts because we haven’t seen them. But we’ll look at it and learn more, I’m sure.”

It is unclear if the Justice Department has received the texts as of Monday afternoon. A Justice Department spokesman did not comment to CNN about Jones’ texts.

New map of CS:GO: Tuscans full release now available in Steam Workshop

Car maker Brute and Catfood completed the CS:GO work of Tuscan, one of the most iconic maps from Counter-Strike.

This Tuscan remake is being developed for the first time since at least 2020 when a number of people called Nors3 invited to practice a series of tests, and to inspect how far this is done. In CS:GO the first version of Tuscan was revealed on a tour that was made by former professional player and current streamer Erik fl0m Flom in February 2021.

The full release of Tuscany is now out on the workshop, said Catfood today. I wish everyone a good game.

The full release of Tuscany is already over at the workshop! I wish everyone well and have fun! Download link:https://t.co/BvCggjgYgK pic.twitter.com/IWjKdYNEL – a download link from our website.

catfood (@catfoodplans) August 8-2022.

The Battle of Tuscan is a bombed defusal map created in 2007 by Brute and became the most popular map in the game. Since the game was called for in 2012, the community pushed for a port for CS:GO, but only in 2019 rumors were floating about that a rework will be done.

The official release of Tuscan for CS:GO comes a few weeks after Gabe Follower, a famous CS:GO leaker, said that the official developers of Valves FPS were testing Tuscan and a new map named Prime.

After Tuscans’ work is done, it can’t get to CS:GO’s official active map pool – in case Valve wants to add it and replace one of the maps there. For now, only the most enjoyable thing players can do is download it on the Steam workshop and play custom games with friends.

Tahlia McGrath Covid test, Australia vs India cricket final, news, scores, gold medal, result

Good luck trying to name any national sporting team on the planet as red-hot as the Australian women’s cricket team right now

The Aussies did it again on Monday morning (AEST) in the Commonwealth Games final when they showed extreme class in the nail-biting final overs to defeat India by 17 runs.

The win gives Australia a never-before-seen trifecta as ODI world champions, T20 world champions and Commonwealth Games gold medalists.

The drama at the death was almost matched by the drama at the start of the day’s play as it was revealed following the toss of the coin that Aussie allrounder Tahlia McGrath had tested positive for Covid-19 the morning of the match. Despite the test, McGrath was allowed to play, with the full support of the ICC, the Australian Commonwealth Games team and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

There were also reports the Indian team was not told about McGrath’s test result until the toss of the coin – causing a delay of more than 10 minutes for the game to start. Reports in India claimed the Indian team wanted McGrath to be stood down.

Photos of McGrath embracing teammates as they celebrated on the podium during the medal presentations showed what a farce the whole situation was.

McGrath was seen isolated from her teammates and wearing a face mask as Australia batted in the first innings. She had removed the mask as she walked out to bat.

Her innings only lasted four balls, but the bizarreness of her place in the game was seen in the second innings when she took a catch and had to tell teammates to back away from her as they ran to celebrate the wicket with her.

Her batting cameo was a minor ripple as Australia reached 8/161 at the end of their 20 overs.

India’s run chase was looking good at 2/118 after 14 overs, however, that’s when Ash Gardner turned the contest with two crucial wickets as India lost 3/3 in two overs.

It left India needing 41 from the final four overs with five wickets in hand.

However, the wickets kept tumbling from there and India found themselves needing 16 runs from the final two overs.

India then lost four wickets in nine balls, crumbling at the finish line, bowled all out for 152 from 19.3 overs.

Earlier, McGrath presented with mild symptoms on the morning before the game and then returned a positive result after speaking to Aussie team officials.

The Australian Commonwealth Games team said comprehensive protocols have been put in place.

The Aussie Commonwealth Games team announced the decision to allow McGrath to play was made in consultation with the ICC and Australian medical staff.

“Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) can confirm that cricketer Tahlia McGrath has returned a positive test for Covid-19,” the CGA statement read.

“CGA clinical staff have consulted with the Commonwealth Games Federation RACEG (Results Analysis Clinical Expert Group) team and match officials, and McGrath is taking part in today’s final against India.

“McGrath presented to team management with mild symptoms on Sunday and subsequently returned the positive test. She was named in the starting XI at the toss and the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved her participation in the final.

“In consultation with the CGF and the ICC, CGA and Cricket Australia medical staff have implemented a range of comprehensive protocols which will be observed throughout the game and for post-match activity, to minimize the risk of transmission to all players and officials.

The CGA has maintained a comprehensive Covid-19 risk mitigation strategy for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, with testing protocols over and above those required by the Birmingham 2022 Organizing Committee.”

Indian sport commentators were fuming about the ruling that has allowed McGrath to play.

Bloomberg News reporter Akshat Rathi described it as a “dereliction of duties”.

He posted on Twitter: “I don’t understand how the rules are allowing Tahlia McGrath on the field playing a cricket match after having tested positive for Covid-19. Dereliction of duty by authorities”.

Sports reporter Naveen Sharma said it was “shameless” by Australia.

“Australians always preach about right or wrong but they forget everything when it comes to them,” he posted on Twitter.

Other commentators said the ruling opens up Pandora’s Box.

Gabby Petito’s family files $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against Utah police

The family of Gabby Petito on Monday announced a wrongful death lawsuit against police in Moab, Utah, accusing the department of failing to properly investigate her domestic violence case and protect her.

The lawsuit, which seeks $50 million in damages, comes around the first anniversary of Petito’s death.

Petito was 22 when she was reported missing in September 2021. She was on a monthslong cross-country trip living in a van with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie.

Petito’s body was found in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming on Sept. 19, 2021. It was determined she had been dead for at least three weeks and her death de ella was ruled a homicide by “manual strangulation.” Laundrie, who was named a person of interest in the case, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Florida’s Carlton Reserve in October 2021.

Laundrie admitted to killing Petito in writings that were found after his death.

The notice of intent filing, which is required before suing government entities, was filed against the Moab City Police Department, its then-Chief Bret Edge, formerAssistant Chief Braydon Palmer, and Officers Eric Pratt and Daniel Robbins.

The Moab City Police Department did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment. A representative for the city of Moab said it does not comment on pending litigation.

The suit will center on a police encounter with Petito and Laundrie on Aug. 12, 2021, during their trip in Utah, shortly before her death.

That interaction made headlines following Petito’s disappearance, with body camera footage released showing Petito visibly distraught. According to the police report, Petito told officers she had slapped Laundrie and hit him first and that he had grabbed her face from her.

But ultimately, both Petito and Laundrie said that they did not want to press charges and that they loved each other.

An independent review, completed in January this year, found that the officers made several mistakes in handling that case—misclassifying it as more of a mental/emotional health “break” rather than domestic violence, and lacking details in their reports.

Their reports lacked details or documentation of any injury Petito suffered — and no one appeared to ask Laundrie about a scratch on Petito’s cheek, the independent review found.

In the new filing, lawyers for the Petito family argue that had police officers involved in that incident had proper training — teaching them to conduct a thorough lethality assessment and recognize signs of abuse — they’d know “Gabby was a victim of intimate partner violence ” and needed “immediate protection.”

In that incident, Laundrie and Petito were stopped in their van by officers who saw the vehicle speeding, crossing the double yellow line and hitting a curb near Arches National Park. A witness had called police, reporting they saw Laundrie “slapping” Petito.

Officer Daniels and Robbins interviewed Petito and Laundrie separately.

Robbins said he observed cuts on Gabby’s cheek and arm in his report, but court documents said that when she was asked about her fight with Laundrie, she “displayed the classic hallmarks of an abused partner” in trying to take the blame saying she hit him first and didn’t want to be separated from him.

Lawyers for the Petito family said a new photo, that hasn’t been released to the public yet, shows a close-up of Gabby’s face “where blood is smeared on her cheek and left eye.”

“The photo shows that Gabby’s face was grabbed across her nose and mouth, potentially restricting her airway,” the filing said.

When speaking with officers, Laundrie told Officer Robbins he pushed Gabby away to avoid being slapped, and admitted to taking her phone saying he didn’t have one. But later in that same interview he pulled out his own phone from his pocket, the document said.

“The officers did not question Brian about the inconsistencies in his version of events. Instead, they determined that Gabby was the primary aggressor and that Brian was a potential victim of domestic violence,” the document said.

Under Utah state law about domestic violence, the officers would have been required to send a report to prosecutors, but it was not done because the incident was mischaracterized as disorderly conduct, the independent review of the police interaction said.

The filing said that Officer Pratt called Assistant Chief Palmer for assistance on how the handle the situation and he was told to read the assault statute carefully and decide if the situation satisfied the law.

Pratt decided that Utah law only recognizes assault if the perpetrator intended to cause bodily injury — which the suit said is an incorrect interpretation. When Pratt questioned Gabby if she intended to cause Laundrie bodily injury when she hit him, she replied no.

Ultimately, police told the couple to separate for the night and no charges were filed.

James McConkie, one of the attorneys retained in the case, said, “While the full evidence has not yet been made public, when it is released, it will clearly show that if the officers had been properly trained and followed the law, Gabby would still be alive today.”

“Failure to follow the law can have a deadly consequence, as it did in this case,” he said.

He claimed the Moab City Police Department has had “chronic problems with protecting” domestic violence victims in failing to provide training and resources for officers.

“This is an institutional failure plain and simple,” he said.

The lawsuit is in addition to another suit filed by the Petito family in Florida against Laundrie’s parents, accusing them of hindering the search for their daughter, and alleging they knew Laundrie killed Petito.

Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, wiped away tears at a press conference Monday.

“This is just bringing back a lot of pain,” she said. “We’re going to do whatever we can. That’s why we’re here.”

Schmidt recalled seeing that police body camera footage in question saying, “Watching it is very painful. I wanted to jump through the screen and rescue her.”

She shared a message to victims currently in abusive relationships, saying, “Just reach out when you can and get the help that you need… You can get out. Just do it safely. Reach out to someone that you can trust.”

ORDER releases Hatz from CS:GO roster

ORDER’s Australian CS:GO lineup has been depleted to four players after the organization parted ways with Jordan “Hatz” Bajic ahead of the return of the competitive season.

The move comes a little over two months after ORDER acquired the roster from Renegades in June 2022. Although Hatz spent just a couple of months under the ORDER banner, he had been playing alongside Simon “Sico” Williams and Joshua “INS” Potter since January 2020, when he joined Renegades.

“I’ve worked with Jordan (Hatz) all the way back from the beginning of Renegades – over the years, he’s been a teammate, long-term housemate, dominant CS force, and most importantly a great friend to not only myself but the entire team throughout,” ORDER’s manager William “MrGrayhound” Gray said in a statement. “This team has always been a group consisting of real friendships and for that, it’s with an incredibly heavy heart to see him go.”

Hatz only got to play at two events during his stay with ORDER: the ESL Pro League season 16 Conference in June and IEM Cologne in July. He averaged an underwhelming 0.94 rating across these two events, according to HLTV’s statistics, and was among the team’s worst individual performers.

It’s unclear at this point who ORDER will pick up to replace Hatz. The pool of Australian players is limited and there’s not a big signing the organization can make with the exception of former Renegades, 100 Thieves, and EXTREMUM in-game leader Aaron “AZR” Ward.

Pups get wet and wild at California’s World Dog Surfing championships

Hundreds of dog lovers and dozens of dogs have gathered for the World Dog Surfing Championships in California.

The event, held at Pacifica State Beach near San Francisco, saw wave-riding pooches judged on everything from technique to confidence and size of their wave.

The hounds are placed in groups according to size, from small to medium and large-very large.

There were also tandem dog classes, as well as tandem human-dogs, with owners joining their pups on the board.

Saturday’s event, billed as the “premier dog surfing event in the world”, has been held in the San Francisco area since 2006.

Jeffrey Niebor’s seven-year-old Labrador Charlie, who started surfing at the age of two, walked away with second place in the large-very large group.

“I can’t even explain his passion for it and how much he enjoys it,” Mr Niebor said.

“He has such a good time. Even when we’re not surfing competitively, if we just go to the beach and we’re hanging out and he takes his surfboard to the water and he’ll bark on the waves, people just love it and we just like to keep it positive.”

Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

Proud owners talk about their board-riding hounds

James Wall went one better with his dog Faith, a 10-year-old rescue dog, winning first place in the same category.

“She was scared of a lot of stuff as a puppy. And we just started going to the beach. She jumped on one of the surfboards and I was like, yeah let’s give it a try… and she hasn’t looked back since,” he said.

Prerana Rani, a dog owner and spectator from Santa Clara, was curious if her pup would take to the waves like those competing.

“It was amazing to see so many dogs come together and just surf. This is the first time I’ve seen dogs surf so it was really good, and I hope my dog will be inspired,” she said.

More human remains were found at Lake Mead, according to officials Saturday.

Park rangers responded to reports of human skeletal remains uncovered at the lake’s Swim Beach — the fourth set found at the lake since May.

Park rangers and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s dive team set a perimeter to recover the remains, officials said. The investigation is ongoing and the county’s medical examiner is determining the cause of death.

Located roughly 20 miles east of Las Vegas, Lake Mead was formed by the Hoover Dam, and can hold more water than any other reservoir in the United States. It supplies water to millions of people.

Here’s a brief timeline of human remains found in Lake Mead in recent months:

May 1, 2022: Hemenway Harbor

Boaters found a body inside of a barrel after extremely low water levels exposed the bottom of the lake.

Authorities said the person’s belongings indicated they had died between the 1970s and 1980s. They believe the person’s death was a homicide that resulted from a gunshot wound.

The barrel containing the skeletal remains was found in an area close to the lake’s Hemenway Harbor, according to earlier reports from the Associated Press. That’s also close to Swim Beach.

May 7, 2022: Callville Bay

Two sisters found skeletal remains at Callville Bay. Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse believes the remains were from a person between the approximate ages of 23 and 37, according to CNN.

Rouse said this set was more skeletal than the previous remains found, which had organ tissue, CNN also reported.

The cause of death in this case remains unknown.

July 25, 2022: Swim Beach

Reports emerged about another set of remains found at Swim Beach, according to authorities. The investigation is still ongoing and the cause of death has not been identified.

A worsening drought

The newest discovery of human remains found in the lake comes as the reservoir suffers from an ongoing 22-year-long drought.

Lake Mead has hit its lowest water levels since 1937 and is filled to 27% of capacity, according to NASA.

Las Vegas began pumping for its water supply from deeper in the lake because of how depleted the reservoir became, the Associated Press reported in May.

These droughts — exacerbated by climate change — continue to disrupt the West. The area is dealing with its driest period in at least 1,200 years.

Nevada, Arizona and California, along with the federal government, reached a $200 million deal to try to keep more water in Lake Mead this year and next, according to Alex Hager from Colorado’s KUNC member station.

(E) Flowchart of the interaction between the modules of the smart finger when identifying materials. Credit: Science Advances (2022). DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.abq2521

A team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed an artificial finger that was able to identify certain surface materials with 90% accuracy. In their paper published in the journal Science Advancesthe group describes how they used triboelectric sensors to give their test finger an ability to gain a sense of touch.

Prior research has led to the development of robotic fingers that have the ability to recognize certain attributes of certain surfaces, such as pressure or temperature—the team with this new effort, have taken such efforts further by adding the ability to identify a material that is being touched.

The finger was created by applying small square sensors to the type of a finger-shaped object. Each of the squares was made of a different kind of plastic polymer, each chosen because of their unique electrical properties. When such sensors are moved close to an object, such as a flat surface, electrons from the sensors interact with the materials in unique ways.

The sensors beneath the polymer were all connected to their own processors inside of the finger, which were then connected together to allow for comparison of results and for machine learning-based data analysis. The researchers also attached a tiny LCD screen for displaying results. The researchers then tested their finger by having it touch various flat surfaces such as those made of glass, wood, plastic and silicon. They found it capable of detecting the right material on average 96.8% of the time, with a minimum accuracy of 90% for all of the surfaces. The researchers also tested the finger for endurance by having it touch a surface thousands of times and found that it held up well enough for industrial applications.

Credit: Science Advances (2022). DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.abq2521

The researchers suggest that if their finger were to be used in an industrial setting it could be connected directly to a control mechanism. They also suggest it could be used to test products to ensure they meet manufacturing standards. And they also note that such a finger could also be used on a full-sized human robot, adding to its capabilities. They point out that the technology behind their finger could likely be used in prosthetic devices to help restore a certain degree of touch for people who have lost such an ability.
