Anne Heche’s son mourns mother after shock crash death

Anne Heche’s son has paid tribute to his mother saying the family had lost “a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend.”

In a statement Heche’s son, Homer Laffoon, 20, wrote: “My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom. After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness.

“Hopefully my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.”

Watch Sunrise on Channel 7 and stream it for free on 7plus >>

Last Friday, Heche was in a car that was traveling at a high speed when it ran off the road and collided with a residence that became engulfed in flames, Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee told CNN at the time.

One week after the crash, Heche is “brain dead” but remains on life support, according to a statement from her family and friends and shared with CNN by their representative.

Under California law, due to her condition, Heche is considered legally dead.

Heche has not been taken off life support so they have time to determine if she is a match for organ donation, according to the representative.

“We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” the earlier statement from the family said.

“Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.

“Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”

Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury, which deprives the brain of oxygen, as a result of the crash, according to the family’s representative.

A woman inside the home at the time of the crash suffered minor injuries and sought medical attention, according to Lee.

In their message on Thursday, Heche’s family and friends thanked her care team at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital and paid tribute to Heche’s “huge heart” and “generous spirit.”

“More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love,” the statement read.

She rose to fame on the soap opera “Another World,” where she played the dual role of twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love from 1987 to 1991.

She earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance on the show.

He followed that success with numerous films, including “Donnie Brasco,” “Wag the Dog” and “Six Days Seven Nights” opposite Harrison Ford.

In more recent years, Heche has appeared in television shows like “The Brave,” “Quantico,” and “Chicago PD”

Following the crash, there was an outpouring of support for the actress from the Hollywood community.

Her ex and former “Men in Trees” co-star James Tupper, with whom she shares one of her two sons, wrote on Instagram: “Thoughts and prayers for this lovely woman, actress and mother tonight Anne Heche. We love you.”

Ryan Tillotson, the producer of Heche’s podcast “Better Together,” said in a statement she was “irreplaceable” and will be remembered for “her big heart, her commitment to the people she loved, and the fearless way she fought for what she believed in.”

“More than a beloved host, Anne was my friend, collaborator, and a damn good actress. Anne added life to every room she entered with her tremendous energy and welcoming presence,” Tillotson said.

More paintings found as rogue gallery owner goes missing

A total of 50 missing works by 10 Australian artists provided to Koenig had been identified by Alana Kushnir, a solicitor who specializes in art law and has taken on the case against the former gallery owner pro bono. These are all paintings that artists say they were not paid for and never had returned.

Since this masthead first reported on the case of Koenig and the missing artworks last December, 23 of the missing works have been found. This is mostly due to the good conscience of collectors like Westcott who were horrified to learn that none of the money they paid Koenig for the artworks had gone to the artists.

loading

A Melbourne collector who asked not to be named said he saw two paintings he bought from Koenig among a gallery of missing works published by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. He said he was also shocked to learn that it is commonplace for gallery owners to take a 50 per cent commission on the paintings they sell.

“I don’t want to have something hanging on my wall at home that an artist hasn’t been paid for,” the collector said. His solution was to buy additional work directly from the artists so they received the entirety of the sale proceeds to make up for what they were owed by Koenig.

loading

In other cases, the artists were simply happy to know their work was safe and being admired. Birchall says Westcott offered to pay him for the painting she bought from Koenig but he declined. “The offer was lovely but I felt a bit uncomfortable. She shouldn’t have to pay twice for it.”

When Andrew and Nicola Forrest read that Koenig had not paid Sydney artist Lara Merrett for two works hanging in the family’s company headquarters in Perth, they intervened to make sure the artist was not left out of pocket.

Other collectors are pursuing Koenig through the courts.

Victoria Police made telephone contact last week with Koenig who, after failing to answer a summons before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, has a warrant issued for his arrest. His last known address for him was an apartment in Richmond.

The court has issued two default orders totaling $11,717 against Koenig requested by collectors who bought but never received from Koenig works by Texas-based artist Jon Joanis.

Separately, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has ordered Koenig to pay the money he owed to Harry Mcalpine, a New Zealand artist based in Melbourne.

Patrick Keyser, a Melbourne-based barrister briefed by Simchowitz, says the LA dealer is determined to pursue Koenig for the $52,000 he says he owes him from 2017, plus five years of interest.

The final twist for Westcott came when she discovered that one of her Petra Cortright prints could not be authenticated. This meant that a $US15,000 artwork was now worthless. To make amends, Simchowitz’s Australian-based agent traveling from Sydney to Melbourne with a new Cortright print this week.

What does Ed Perkins’ ‘The Princess’ say about society?

It draws solely from contemporary archival audio and video footage to take audiences back to key events in Diana’s life as they happened, including her seemingly fairytale public courtship and wedding, the birth of her two sons, her and Charles’ bitter divorce, and Diana’s untimely death aged 36, on August 31, 1997.

The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant judgment of her character.

princess is the British director’s third feature documentary (he was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2018 short documentary, Black Sheep, about a black teenager’s experience with racism). He was 11 when Diana was killed (a year younger than Prince Harry), and says while her death de ella has been covered at length, most efforts had tried “to get inside her head de ella”.

Perkins says, most importantly, the film serves as a reflection of society at the time, revealing the public’s own preoccupations, fears, aspirations and desires.

“The part of the story that I personally find more interesting and that, I think, has been less explored is not ‘what does this story say about Diana?’ but actually, ‘what does Diana’s story say about all of us?’,” he says.

loading

“The part of the puzzle that I was instinctively drawn to is what does this say about our fascination? What does it say about our needs? What does it say about our desires? So, the whole reason we’ve constructed the film solely out of archive, the entire reason we haven’t used headshot interviews and kind of retrospective analysis is because we want the film to kind of hold a mirror up to all of us.

“The thing I think is most difficult to talk about is, like, what was our role in this story? What was our active role? What was our complicity in this tragic tale?

There are very few revelations in the film, which chronicles Diana’s life from right before the announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles up to her death. And Perkins says after watching literally hundreds of hours of footage of Diana, he still did not really get to know her about her.

Viewers don’t just see Diana through the media’s eye, in old interviews and broadcasts, but also the public’s reception of her through vox pops on TV news and current affairs programs. He says while the film “may not be revelatory”, it “offers a new perspective”.

“A lot of people talk about her being almost like a blank canvas onto which we were all able to project our own hopes and dreams and fears. And that’s perhaps one of the reasons why people, so many different people, found a sort of seemingly personal connection to her.”

Does the film draw a connection between Diana's life and modern-day royal crises? Director Ed Perkins says that's for audiences to decide.

Does the film draw a connection between Diana’s life and modern-day royal crises? Director Ed Perkins says that’s for audiences to decide.

The film uses part of a five-minute chunk of the now-infamous Panorama interview Diana gave to BBC journalist Martin Bashir in 1995, in which she broke her silence on Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, saying: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The interview — watched by 23 million people — contributed to Diana’s divorce from Charles in 1996. In May last year, a report by British judge Lord Dyson found that Bashir had duped Diana into the interview by using fake documents that purported to show staffers were taking money in exchange for planting stories about her in the media. The report also found that BBC bosses tried to cover it up.

Perkins defends the use of the interview, which is shown briefly and in context, as a moment of historical record.

“I think Diana’s life for many years became a kind of national sitcom sort of soap opera. One of the questions the film is offering up is like, we want the fairytale but at what cost and at whose expense? These are real stories about real people, and we approached them with the sensitivity and respect they deserve,” he said.

Flowers left by mourners outside Kensington Palace after the 36-year-old princess' death.

Flowers left by mourners outside Kensington Palace after the 36-year-old princess’ death.

As to whether he can draw a connection to modern-day crises within the family, Perkins says it is up to viewers to draw their conclusions. But he did become more sympathetic, specifically towards princes William and Harry.

“You know, this isn’t a film that is trying to be pro-monarchy or anti-monarchy, pro-Diana or anti-Diana. We’ve tried to tell a complex story with a lightness of touch and with nuance,” he says.

loading

“But I do think there are some ways in which we can see this story as sort of an origin story for some of the things that have happened more recently within the royal family, but also the kind of continued evolving relationship between us, the monarchy and people in public life.”

Meet Lady Amelia Windsor: Prince Harry and William’s cousin and the first royal influencer

Lady Amelia Windsor may only be 43rd in-line to the British throne, but she still lives an enviable life of royal luxury.

The 26-year-old, who counts Prince William and Prince Harry as her third cousins, is the daughter of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and Sylvana Windsor and was once crowned the “most beautiful woman in the British royal family”.

While Lady Amelia hasn’t grown up with the same glaring spotlight as her famous cousins, the young royal is etching out a royal reputation for herself as an Instagram influencer.

As for her royal heritage, Amelia’s grandfather, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, 86, is the Queen’s first cousin and close confidant.

Edward has played a special role in the Queen’s life. Her Majesty arrived on the royal balcony at Trooping the Color for the Platinum Jubilee with Edward by her side.

He took the place of Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, for the moment.

Amelia’s early life had all the trappings of a modern aristocrat. Amelia attended a Catholic boarding school for girls and went on to study art, Latin and French at the University of Edinburgh.

She then took a “gap year” in India and Thailand, proving she’s an adventurous soul too.

Much like her philanthropic royal relatives, Amelia also volunteered for the Veterans Aid association.

In July last year, Amelia even cleaned out her wardrobe to sell items on Depop, with sales going directly to the Cross River Gorilla charity – which aims to preserve the endangered primate species.

Amelia – who simply goes by “Mel” online – lives in the upmarket London suburb of Notting Hill with her older sister, Lady Marina Charlotte Windsor.

As she is so far back in line for the throne, the socialite, model and budding fashion icon doesn’t have to work as a senior royal.

Instead, she pursues her passion for style as the face of several major fashion houses and brands.

Amelia is signed on as a model at Storm agency, the same firm which scouted Kate Moss at a New York airport in 1988.

She is regularly snapped at prestigious fashion events wearing Chanel and Dior and has worked for fashion brands such as Bulgari.

Vanity Fair also listed her in its International Best Dressed list for 2017.

And if Amelia’s Instagram is anything to judge her beauty by, these publications aren’t far off the mark.

Her profile, which has close to 100,000 followers, is brimming with stunning modeling shots, selfies and snaps from her elegant outings around London.

“It’s more organic, really. I’m still getting to grips with it, learning how to use it.” [Instagram] wisely and sensibly,” she explained.

“Instagram is wonderful in so many ways, but it’s also something that should be used with respect – for yourself and for other people. It’s a learning curve for everyone, but it’s an amazing force of creativity and imagination.

floating moments show why he’s in elite company

CHRIS ROCK: Ego Death
Aware Super Theatre, August 13
★★★½

Moments into his new show, Chris Rock addresses the elephant in the room: “I’m OK”. With that, he’s away, riffing on his sheer incredulity at unwittingly being one half of that headline-hogging Oscars slap. “He’s bigger than me! He has played Ali!” he relates, eyes boggling with the ridiculousness of the whole thing. “I couldn’t even play Floyd Mayweather!” It’s a bright spot in a slow opening stretch that sees Rock offer meandering thoughts on the general craziness of the times.

The 57-year-old has authored some of the most dazzlingly original and expertly provocative stand-up comedy ever, but, at times, ego-death relies on his still sublime delivery to sell material that tends to the anonymous.

There are familiar takes on the dangerous buffoonery of Trump, the illogic of anti-vaxxers, how ancient Joe Biden seems, and the irksome phenomena of self-appointed virology experts. More distinctive are the reflections on his wealth and how this shaped his daughters’ upbringing. There are amusing detours into what a trip to Disneyland looks like for the kids of a Hollywood A-lister. One section on a private school threatening to expel his daughter is overlong but eventually arrives at a satisfying conclusion.

Other times, he delights in wrong-footing the audience, explaining that he’s pro-choice but for somewhat unexpected reasons. He also explores his life as a single man and expresses his cynicism about monogamy and paranoia about dating in the #MeToo era.

the show is preceded by a montage of stand-up greats: Carlin, Kaufman, Pryor, Rivers. There are moments here, floating but undeniable, when he’s stalking the stage in that classic feline prowl or building up to a crescendo of exasperation, that you get a glimpse of why Rock belongs in that elite company.

The Block ‘quitter’ Elle Ferguson’s brutal move against co-star

The Block’s star couple Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull are apparently not looking to stay in touch with some of their fellow contestants.

The global influencer and her ex-AFL player fiance dramatically exited the show after just two days, leaving host Scott Cam furious and their co-stars baffled.

Addressing the scandal on Weekend Today On Sunday, contestant Sarah-Jane Wilson revealed that Elle had recently blocked her on social media.

“You’ve had no contact with (Elle and Joel) since (they left)?” Today host Belinda Russell asked.

“No, I got blocked. She blocked me on Instagram,” Sarah-Jane replied.

“I went to show someone her (page) the other day, because they were like, ‘Who is this person?’

“And then I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve made it, I’ve made it in the world, a celebrity has blocked me’.”

During the interview, Sarah-Jane also admitted she hadn’t been surprised to find out the couple had called it quits so early into the production.

“I could tell that they were unhappy after judging,” she told the hosts.

“You don’t really spend a lot of time (together) before that, you’re doing the challenge, so you’re busy. But at the judging, they seemed not too happy, there were a few little sentences that I heard and I thought, ‘Oh gosh …’ so no, I wasn’t surprised when they left.”

It comes after weeks of headlines surrounding their shock exit, which host Scott Cam has slammed as “p**s poor” and “unAustralian” in interviews ahead of the season.

Despite reports the couple left the competition to be with Joel’s mother after a nasty fall, it appears the duo bowed out of the challenge because it wasn’t “on brand”, with Cam telling fellow competitors they’d complained that the toilet paper was “too scratchy”.

Ahead of the shock revelation, Joel and Elle’s first room challenge copped some negative criticism from judges Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whitaker and Darren Palmer, who commented that it was “too Bondi” for the country setting.

At the time, Sarah-Jane declared she had predicted the couple weren’t Block material.

“I saw that coming… They didn’t make any effort to get to know us… They looked miserable the whole time… I heard that they were like ‘I can’t wear that, that doesn’t represent us’,” she told the others, adding that they seemed “sour” after coming fourth in the room reveal.

The Block Tree Change continues tonight from 7pm on Channel 9.
