The Block house shut down after asbestos found

There was a worrying development in Monday’s episode of The Block, as a contestant hammered into the floor of his house – only to discover what he suspected to be asbestos.

Melboune plumber Tom was nearing the end of the demolition process for he and wife Sarah-Jane’s guest bedroom, with just a small section of floor left to smash.

But when the mallet came down, he made a startling discovery.

“As soon as I saw it, I’m like: Oh god, here we go, more delays,” he said.

The Block moved quickly once the deadly substance was spotted, with everyone in House One downing tools for a full day as a team moved in to assess the risk and remove the asbestos.

“They shut our house down, and rightfully so – asbestos is very dangerous,” said Tom, who was left with little to do but visit his fellow contestants while he nervously waited to see how long his house would be out of action.

Some six hours later, foremen Keith and Dan finally returned to the site to give the all-clear that work could summarize.

And Dan also offered some explanation as to why the asbestos hadn’t been spotted before the houses were handed over to the contestants: “In this location, under the fireplace and used as formwork, it’s very hard to locate. That’s why we didn’t find it – Tom’s done the right thing in alerting us,” he said.

Elsewhere in Monday’s episode, contestant Sharon was clearly still smarting after she and partner Ankur’s bathroom came dead last in Sunday’s judging.

The couple had copped a particularly tough critique from judge Shaynna Blaze, who warned them that their house was “the grand dame, the jewel in the crown. Are you going to treat her like Este? Because if you’re going to treat her like this, you’re going to have to deal with me.”
Sharon was left in tears immediately after the judging, declaring that in a week one on The Blockshe was already “over it.”

One episode on, and she was in a more defiant mood.

“(Shaynna) goes, ‘That’s my house, I love this house, I’m really angry that they did this…’” Sharon began.

“Well, it’s not your house, babes. You haven’t bought it. If you’re gonna buy it, that’s a different story.”

She continued to call out Shaynna directly, arguing that she had missed some of the key details in the room the couple had included to appeal to her.

“Also, I did try to cater for you. You said you wanted antiques, but your antique eye didn’t even recognize the antiques in the room. I literally had stuff in there from the 1890s!”

Sharon said that, in the wake of the tough judging, she’d made a promise to husband Ankur that she wouldn’t beat herself up so much moving forward.

“That’s the pact that we’ve made to each other, because I’ve literally spent every day crying since I got here – and that’s not a good thing.”

The Block ‘quitter’ Elle Ferguson’s brutal move against co-star

The Block’s star couple Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull are apparently not looking to stay in touch with some of their fellow contestants.

The global influencer and her ex-AFL player fiance dramatically exited the show after just two days, leaving host Scott Cam furious and their co-stars baffled.

Addressing the scandal on Weekend Today On Sunday, contestant Sarah-Jane Wilson revealed that Elle had recently blocked her on social media.

“You’ve had no contact with (Elle and Joel) since (they left)?” Today host Belinda Russell asked.

“No, I got blocked. She blocked me on Instagram,” Sarah-Jane replied.

“I went to show someone her (page) the other day, because they were like, ‘Who is this person?’

“And then I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve made it, I’ve made it in the world, a celebrity has blocked me’.”

During the interview, Sarah-Jane also admitted she hadn’t been surprised to find out the couple had called it quits so early into the production.

“I could tell that they were unhappy after judging,” she told the hosts.

“You don’t really spend a lot of time (together) before that, you’re doing the challenge, so you’re busy. But at the judging, they seemed not too happy, there were a few little sentences that I heard and I thought, ‘Oh gosh …’ so no, I wasn’t surprised when they left.”

It comes after weeks of headlines surrounding their shock exit, which host Scott Cam has slammed as “p**s poor” and “unAustralian” in interviews ahead of the season.

Despite reports the couple left the competition to be with Joel’s mother after a nasty fall, it appears the duo bowed out of the challenge because it wasn’t “on brand”, with Cam telling fellow competitors they’d complained that the toilet paper was “too scratchy”.

Ahead of the shock revelation, Joel and Elle’s first room challenge copped some negative criticism from judges Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whitaker and Darren Palmer, who commented that it was “too Bondi” for the country setting.

At the time, Sarah-Jane declared she had predicted the couple weren’t Block material.

“I saw that coming… They didn’t make any effort to get to know us… They looked miserable the whole time… I heard that they were like ‘I can’t wear that, that doesn’t represent us’,” she told the others, adding that they seemed “sour” after coming fourth in the room reveal.

The Block Tree Change continues tonight from 7pm on Channel 9.

The Block: Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull leave show amid claims it wasn’t ‘on brand’

The Block’s first scandal of the season has finally aired, with influencer Elle Ferguson and her AFL star beau Joel Patfull bailing on the show without so much as a goodbye on Monday night’s episode.

It comes after weeks of headlines surrounding their shock exit, which host Scott Cam has slammed as “p*ss poor” and “unAustralian” in interviews ahead of the season.

Despite reports the couple left the competition to be with Patfull’s mother after a nasty fall, it appears the duo bowed out of the challenge because it wasn’t “on brand”, with Cam telling fellow competitors they’d complained that the toilet paper was “too scratchy”.

Ahead of the shock revelation, Patfull and Ferguson’s first room challenge copped some negative criticism from judges Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whitaker and Darren Palmer, who commented that it was “too Bondi” for the country setting.

“They have smashed the life out of this home… and that breaks my heart,” Blaze said of the room’s lack of character features.

Whitaker agreed: “If they stick with this look throughout the old part of the house and the modern part of the house, it’s going to get very stale and very samey, very quickly.”

He recommended the pair “amp up the heritage, and “have respect for the original bones” in the coming weeks.

But rather than take heed of the advice, the glamorous pair left without a word, leaving the house they’d been assigned in a state of disarray.

On hearing of their departure the next morning, Scotty was in disbelief.

“They just don’t feel like it’s … right for them to do The Block,” executive producer Julian Cress told him.

“Why would you leave after two days?” Cam marveled.

Breaking the news to the remaining contestants, he said: “Last night, if you might remember in the studio, I gave you guys an out … an opportunity, if you thought you couldn’t cut it on the show, you could leave if you wanted to, you could pull the pin.

“I obviously said that tongue in cheek because I didn’t think anyone would drop an opportunity like this, but I’ve just found out that Joel and Elle are on their way to the airport. They have left the show,” he explained to gasps from the cast.

“Why didn’t they even say goodbye?” asked Jenny from House 4.

“They didn’t say goodbye… They didn’t say thanks for having us… They just left,” Cam said, elaborating that they didn’t suggest they were leaving because of a family emergency.

“Well, everything’s fine, apparently, for some reason, The Block isn’t ‘on brand’ for them … And they also said that the toilet paper was too scratchy,” he told the shocked contestants who admitted they had all taken to “weeing in the backyard” amid the competition.

Meanwhile, Sarah-Jane, from winning House 1, declared she had predicted the couple weren’t Block material.

“I saw that coming… They didn’t make any effort to get to know us… They looked miserable the whole time… I heard that they were like ‘I can’t wear that, that doesn’t represent us’,” she told the others, adding that they seemed “sour” after coming fourth in the room reveal.

On hearing they were to be replaced imminently, she said: “I’m glad that someone’s getting the opportunity that’s going to appreciate it … Don’t bring them from Bondi.”

Parents-of-three Rachel and Ryan have now shacked up in House 2 instead of Ferguson and Patfull.
