Jeremy Eden wins People’s Choice award for Samuel Johnson portrait

Melbourne actor Samuel Johnson was three weeks out of hospital and days out of a neck brace, recovering from a near-fatal pedestrian accident, when artist Jeremy Eden came to paint his portrait.

Johnson had been asked before, but it was to Eden, an unrepresented artist from Sydney’s inner suburb of Balmain, that he granted a sitting. Both had lost loved ones to cancer and knew the debilitation of a serious brain injury (in Eden’s case, a family member). And Johnson had admired Eden’s “stunning” 2021 portrait of actor Firass Dirani.

“I knew from the setting that I was in the right hands. I was interested in this photo-realism, this new style of his. He didn’t want to paint a version of me, he wanted to paint the real me,” Johnson said.

The portrait of Johnson – his face crushed with grief, clutching a photograph of the artist’s late mother, Annette, while summoning memories of his own late sister, Connie – struck a chord with the voting public.

On Wednesday, Eden’s painting was named the Archibald Prize’s people’s choice, selected from among 52 finalists on display at the Art Gallery of NSW. Eden won the $5000 cash prize with what was only his second entry in the prize.

Johnson came to public prominence as an actor and established the cancer charity, Love Your Sister, in 2012. The foundation has since raised over $15 million for the fight against the disease that claimed his sister’s life in 2017.

Eden lost his mother to aggressive cancer nine years earlier.

“I’m stupid proud of that young man,” Johnson said. “What people do not know is that when he lost his mum, his mum left what little she had to him. He used that to become the painter he is today. It’s so rewarding to see a man who deserves it get treasured.”

Woodstock ’99’, the Worst Music Festival Ever

On paper, it sounded like a great idea: let’s recreate Woodstock to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the peace and love music festival that sat at the epicenter of the hippie movement. Groovy.

What followed was four days of carnage. The event was marred with deaths, rapes, assaults, violence and arson and will go down in history as one of the worst music events ever to take place. It all but set fire to the legacy of the original gathering in ’69.

Now, as a three-part Netflix documentary is set to cover the chaos of that long weekend in Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99what actually happened to make it such a horrific disaster?

trainwreck woodstock '99 true story

Courtesy of Netflix

backstory

Five years prior to ’99, there had been a Woodstock ’94 festival that also ended in catastrophe. Storms meant that the site was turned into a huge mudbath, more than double the attendees expected turned up (estimated around 350,000) meaning that the crowd couldn’t be safely monitored and two people died. Elsewhere at the event, the lead singer of the band Jackyl burned a stool on stage, attacked it with a chainsaw and fired a gun during their performance; some bands were pelted with mud on stage.

The writing was on the wall (or maybe it was just the mud) that a second re-enactment of the Woodstock festival was probably not a good idea, given the troubles that came with the first event. But the organizers and promoters ploughed on, seemingly oblivious to the heat generated from Woodstock ’94.

Netflix

The set up

Woodstock ’99 was held at a former air force base in Rome, upstate New York. The mainly concrete and asphalt space was the worst location for a music festival, especially when the two main stages were a two-mile walk from each other. The weekend of July 22 to 25 was set to welcome a heatwave, too. Over 400,000 people bought tickets.

There were very few trees or areas of shade, and campers were forced to put up tents on the tarmac. There was serious fencing all around the site, not only stopping people from breaking in, but later on, from escaping. The organizers hadn’t made enough facilities available for their guests, and the toilets and showers were soon overflowing in the heat.

Despite the festival arising from the peace and love ethos of the ’70s, this ’90s event was commercialized to the hilt. MTV sponsored the whole festival, running a pay-per-view of the whole weekend for $60. The four-day party was covered by many corporate sponsors and on site there were pop-up shopping malls and ATMs all over, which would have been handy as punters would be losing money faster than Lehman Brothers in the banking crash. Burritos cost $10, a pizza $12 and most importantly, while customers baked in the searing heat, bottled water was being shilled at $4 – the equivalent of $7/£6 in today’s money.

chaos

As the temperatures rose, so did the aggression in the bro-heavy festival line-up (as The New Yorker noted, only three solo female musicians performed over the whole weekend). By the time Limp Bizkit hit the stage on Saturday night – egged on by lead singer, Fred Durst – some of the audience began tearing wooden panels from the walls during their song Break Things. During their set, Durst said: “It’s time to let yourself go right now, ’cause there are no motherfucking rules out there”. The mosh pit was out of control, but afterwards in an interview, Durst denied encouraging it: “I didn’t see anybody getting hurt. You don’t see that. When you’re looking out on a sea of people and the stage is twenty feet [6 m] in the air and you’re performing, and you’re feeling your music, how do they expect us to see something bad going on?”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers followed Limp Bizkit, and a nice idea by the anti-gun violence organization PAX to get everyone to light candles they had distributed during the song Under The Bridge instead added to the terrible situation. The candles were used to start bonfires and empty bottles were set to light. After the set, the crowd were told not to panic, but there was a “bit of problem” – one of the audio towers had been torched and was set alight.

woodstock true story

Netflix

As the feral atmosphere continued, things got even more dangerous. ATMs were pushed over and broken into, merch stalls were looted and robbed, the site was destroyed and numerous objects set alight.

According to Billboardthere were “five rapes and numerous cases of sexual harrassment and assault” during the weekend, and as reported by mtvtwo women were allegedly gang-raped in the crowd during Limp Bizkit and Korn’s sets.

One festival goer, David DeRosia, collapsed in the crowd at the Metallica performance and later died, believed to be from “hyperthermia, probably secondary to heat stroke”. According to Syracusehis mother then sued the festival promoters and the doctors on site because they were “negligent by not providing enough fresh water and adequate medical care for 400,000 attendees”.

trainwreck woodstock '99 true story

Courtesy of Netflix

There were protests by the National Organization of Women against the sexual violence women endured at the festival, and then the official site, Woodstock.com posted topless pictures of attendees without their consent, captioning them with quotes like “nice pair” or “show us your tits.” VH1 reported news that the promoters were being sued several times for “distress and dehydration.”

Ace San Francisco Examiner journalist Jane Ganahl wrote at the time, it was “the day the music died”.

Is there going to be another Woodstock festival?

In short: probably not. At the end of HBO’s 2021 documentary Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage, the late Michael Lang – who organized the original festival as well as those that came after it – was asked if he thought there would be another Woodstock, given the carnage that unfolded at the turn of the millennium. He said that, at his age, he’d learned not to rule anything out, but it’s not looking likely any time soon.

The legendary promoter passed away in January of this year at the age of 77, from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In the years after Woodstock ’99, Lang had found success writing about the original festival (his 2009 book by him, The Road to Woodstock, became a New York Times bestseller) and even tried to stage a fiftieth anniversary festival in 2019, which was ultimately cancelled. Set to be held in Bethel, New York (after being moved from Watkins Glen International racetrack) it suffered a number of blows before organizers pulled the plug: it was first reduced from three days to one, financial and legal difficulties emerged early on, and many headliners – including Miley Cyrus, Jay-Z, Santana and Dead & Company, amongst many others – canceled their appearances due to the chaotic production process.

The festival was officially canceled on 31 July 2019, and Lang laid much of the blame on Japanese investment firm Dentsu Aegis, who had expressed concern over the amount of money being spent on artists, for pulling out from funding the festival. Lang planned to hold a small fundraising event at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in the same year, but it didn’t happen, and Lang didn’t live to see the festival performed again.

Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99 streams on Netflix from 3 August.

What to watch this August, from the much anticipated The Bear to Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon

I know I say this every month but MY GOD there is some hot streaming content coming out in the next few weeks.

Here’s what to watch in August.

The Bear (Disney+, August 31)

loading

It feels like everyone’s been talking about The Bear lately.

The original comedy tells the story of a chef who worked in fine dining before returning home to Chicago to turn around the sandwich shop his late brother owned.

It’s the kind of simple premise that could have led to a forgettable TV show.

But the ensemble cast (led by Jeremy Allen White), paired with shots of sharp, impressively fast knives, vegetables mid-sauté, and a raucous soundtrack collide to create a realistic depiction of the chaos, tension and desperation that come with working in a restaurant kitchen that collectively knows it could be more successful than it is.

The Bear is often intense. But it’s also hilarious and it may also bring tears to your eyes for the best reasons.

For fans of: Sweetbitter, Ugly Delicious, Chef’s Table, Shameless

House of the Dragon (Binge and Foxtel, August 22)

loading

Dragons! Matt Smith with bleached eyebrows! The vague but still somehow powerful warning that war is afoot in the Game of Thrones universe!

Set about 200 years before the original series, this prequel follows the Targaryen family as their rule of Westeros is threatened by the question of who will succeed King Viserys: his brother, Daemon, or his daughter, Rhaenyra?

Still not sold? So many people will be bingeing this series that you may as well watch it so you can keep up with the office water-cooler chat if nothing else.

For fans of: Game of Thrones (obviously), Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Tudors, Shadow and Bone

Summer Love (ABC iview, August 31)

loading

The eight episodes of Summer Love have only one thing in common: they’re set in the same holiday house by a beach.

Over the course of a summer, that poor house sees it all. Visitors include old friends who realize they maybe shouldn’t be friends anymore, surprise instant parents, an aspiring rapper and his surgeon girlfriend grappling with his abandonment issues, and two strangers who end up being forced to stay together after a double booking.

Prepare to evil-laugh and feel glorious amounts of cringe over this anthology (which stars Miranda Tapsell I must also add — as if you needed any more reason to watch!!).

For fans of: The Letdown, PEN15, Please Like Me

Selling the OC (Netflix, August 24)

loading

The streaming gods have blessed us with another real estate reality show to hate-watch off the back of Selling Sunset’s success.

Chrishell and Christine aren’t in this version, but it does offer just as many swanky houses only the 0.1 per cent could afford, just as many realtors teetering around in heels and bodycon dresses, and just as much drama.

And that’s the most important part really, isn’t it?

For fans of: Selling Sunset, Selling Tampa, any of the Real Housewives series, Yummy Mummies

Here Out West, (ABC iview, August 14)

loading

Here Out West is a film featuring eight interconnected stories (written by eight new writers!) set in the ever-changing melting pot that is Western Sydney.

It’s a heartwarming — and at times, heartbreaking — depiction of family, identity, love and hope.

I have a feeling you won’t regret watching it.

For fans of: The Family Law, Ali’s Wedding, The Heights

A League of Their Own (Amazon Prime, August 12)

loading

Sometimes you just want to curl up and watch something that makes you feel good, and A League of Their Own is that vibe exactly.

The series follows a group of women (made up of familiar faces including Chanté Adams, Abi Jacobsen and D’Arcy Carden) as they form an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and try to provide themselves as ball players at a time when the US is going through immense social transformation during WWII.

If this all sounds familiar, it could be because A League Of Their Own is based on a true story. Oh, and that real-life story was made into a movie by the same name back in 1992 (which this series was adapted from).

For fans of: Hidden Figures, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Hacks, Ted Lasso

“If only it was this quick! We loved this look from yesterday,” Sunrise captioned the video on Wednesday.

Fans were stunned by the host’s before and after video, with many saying the host was “stunning”.

“So stylish,” one said.

“Just like magic,” another commented.

“You look fantastic,” a third said.

“Beautiful before and after,” someone else claimed.

Nat often stuns fans with her gorgeous Sunrise looks, with one outfit she wore in February gaining extra attention.

She wore a sleeveless black Carla Zampatti frock with a high, slightly cowled neckline and an oversized faux leather belt.

After posting a photo of herself in the outfit to Instagram, Nat was inundated with compliments from fans and viewers who couldn’t get enough of the look.

“Wow I love this outfit!! I think it’s the best so far,” one person said.

“I need this outfit in my life,” another commented.

Others describe the dress as “classy and beautiful” and “absolutely stunning”.

In June she attended the Tour de cure annual black-tie Snow Ball, wearing a gold sleeveless top and a long black skirt.

Nat was recently missing from the Sunrise desk after coming down with Covid, and when she returned last week she said her lingering illness made her feel like she “had a couple of wines”.

Although she wasn’t back to her usual self, she did let her colleagues know that she wasn’t contagious and had the all-clear from her doctor to return.

He told Variety on Monday night, while wearing an all-green combination, about his recent quirky sartorial choices: “I don’t know! We’re all going to die, so let’s mess it up.”

It comes after he told GQ earlier this year: “I consider myself on my last leg. This last semester or trimester.

“What is this section gonna be? And how do I want to design that?”

Pitt’s skirt was accompanied by a light brown cardigan and accessorized with a cluster of necklaces, along with sunglasses and black combat boots.

At the time, social media users have mixed reactions to the look.

“Who cares if Brad Pitt wore a skirt? A good iron was needed to the whole ensemble. Looks like I found a bag of clothes in the dumpster and put it on,” one user wrote.

Pitt joins the likes of other male celebrities to have rocked the traditionally female garment, including Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, Oscar Isaac, Pete Davidson, Russell Westbrook, Odell Beckham Jr and Jared Leto.

Meanwhile, his film Bullet Train has received average reviews so far with a score of 51 on Metacritic.

Chicago Sun Times gave it a glowing review and said: “Unlike so many of the cookie-cutter, wisecracking-assassin movies in recent memory, Bullet Train acknowledges its outlandishness from the beginning and yet also manages to connect so many dots in creative, gotcha fashion.”

Meanwhile, AV Club gave it a poor review, writer Rodd Gilchrist said, “ultimately, Bullet Train aims to be slick when it needs to be smart, and predictable when it should be provocative — effectively making all of the wrong stops at exactly the wrong time.”

Bullet Train hits Australian cinemas this Thursday.

Judi Dench only calls her long-term partner “old chap.”

When Dame Judi Dench’s husband Michael Williams died of cancer in 2001, work became her rock. Her acting de ella was something she drowned herself in-a bid to keep her mind busy and to keep grief at bay.

For years, Dench said she never thought dating or romance would be on the cards after such a loss.

But in 2010, she met someone. A man called David Mills – a dairy farmer turned conservationist. And somehow, they clicked instantly, so much so, that they’ve been an item ever since.

But don’t ever call David Mills Judi Dench’s boyfriend or partner. Because she doesn’t like that.

A poll was once conducted in the UK that found the Queen had been overtaken by Dench as the “most popular and respected woman in Britain”. And it appears that sentiment has continued throughout the years.

Here’s everything we know about Judi Dench’s life.

Watch Judi Dench answer questions from famous fans. Post continues below.

Judith Olivia Dench was born in 1934, in North Yorkshire, England. She had an Irish mother and an English father.

From a young age, Dench knew the stage was where she wanted to be. After high school, she went on to study at the Central School Of Speech And Drama. By 23, she had hit the jackpot, cementing herself in the Shakespeare realm.

By the ’60s, Dench was starring in films. And so too was Michael Williams.

The pair had shared the screen on multiple occasions, as well as both being promising young stars in the Royal Shakespeare Company. But it wasn’t until a decade later that they fell in love and began a relationship.

When Judi left for a six-week tour of Australia, Michael followed and proposed. “Ask me on a rainy night in Battersea, and I’ll think about it,” she replied.

By 1971, they were married after his second go at proposing was successful. The next year, they welcomed their only child, daughter Tara Cressida Williams, known as Finty. When Finty was born, Dench figured she would slow down with her work de ella in order to focus on raising her child. But reflecting on that time, Dench said that Williams urged her not to give her career up.
