Convoy cafe arrives in Moonee Ponds right on time for spring days on the enormous deck

The team from popular Collingwood cafe Terror Twilight are bringing queue-worthy breakfasts further north with the opening today of their fourth venue, Convoy, opposite Queens Park in Moonee Ponds.

The spacious corner site is fronted by an L-shaped deck that catches the morning sun, with a takeaway window ready to fuel park- and pool-goers with coffee, sandwiches and snacks.

Serious cafe fanatics can order everything from sweet potato pancakes inspired by cinnamon scrolls to Turkish eggs with lemon yoghurt and black pudding or an English muffin packed with curried scrambled eggs, bacon and pickles. Later in the day, a prawn roll with crisp iceberg and celery beckons.

The cafe is surrounded by an outdoor deck and Queens Park and its swimming pool are across the road.

Inside, the 100-year-old building with bullnose verandahs has been kitted out with houndstooth banquettes, spotted gum joinery and orange leather upholstery by Studio Esteta, whose other work includes Lune Croissanterie and Via Porta.

Despite the large footprint – 65 seats inside and 70 outside – the space feels warm, with intimate pockets created by shelves and screening.

The prize seat might be in the semi-private room with Mediterranean-inspired floor tiles and bifold doors that open onto the deck. Co-owner Kieran Spiteri says this will help with the many booking requests they get for birthday brunches and baby showers.

He and his team say that Moonee Ponds has plenty of cafes, but few with a point of difference. They also chose the area because of personal connections: partner Ben Argentino grew up there while Spiteri’s first job was at the teahouse in Queens Park.

Is the account of the movie Thirteen Lives accurate?

The rescue of a soccer team from a cave in Thailand in 2018 captivated the world. Now it’s the subject of a Ron Howard film Thirteen Lives.

The plight of the “Wild Boars” commanded international attention soon after they were found by two British divers nine days after they vanished in the Tham Luang cave.

The team's coach taught the boys in the cave how to meditate so they could conserve energy. This image is taken from a Thai Navy SEAL video.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s and The Age’s then-South-East Asia correspondent James Massola, who later wrote a book about the rescue, was on the scene with photographer Kate Geraghty.

Readers can compare for themselves how the details were reported at the time with their depiction in the film.

Contributions by the team made up of Thai Navy SEALs and British and Australians divers added to the international flavor of the rescue. Among the Australians, Richard Harris, an anaesthetist from Adelaide, played a key role in the delicate operation. (A graphic shows the length and depth of the cave complex.)

Members of the Australian dive team walk down the track that leads to the cave entrance where the rescue operations are being planned for the 12 boys and their soccer coach who have been trapped inside Tham Luang cave.

Massola reported at the moment the pumps holding floodwaters from entering the cave failed, just hours after the last of the boys were freed, forcing more than 100 rescuers to flee the cave complex while they were celebrating.

The rescue effort took place in a region of northern Thailand, bordering on Myanmar and Laos, which has complex culture and beliefs.

One of northern Thailand’s most revered monks visited the cave complex while families waited for news. Known to locals as the Tham Luang Nang Non or the great cave of the sleeping lady, it features a shrine to the princess of Sipsongpanna at its entrance.

Steve Dimopoulos on Thursday. “We’re bringing Victorians the live music experiences they love, to

Apple Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow spotted in co-ordinating outfits

Gwyneth Paltrow’s lookalike daughter Apple Martin stepped out with her famous mum in New York City.

The pair, dressed in co-ordinating hues, were inspecting Paltrow’s Goop store in the Manhattan neighborhood of Noho.

Martin, 18, was casual chic in a white halter neck dress and black sandals, slinging a canvas tote bag on her shoulder while she carried a bottle of water in one hand and her phone in the other.

Paltrow wore a cream ensemble of a loose-fitted shirt and midi-length wide-leg pleated pants, teamed with white sneakers.

Martin was photographed two weeks earlier on holidays in Ibiza, looking carefree.

The teenage progeny of Paltrow and former husband Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, she recently turned 18 years old.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, Paltrow paid tribute to her daughter. She wrote on Instagram, “18. I’m a bit of a loss for words this morning. I could not be more proud of the woman you are. You are everything I could have dreamed of and so much more.

“Proud doesn’t cover it, my heart swells with feelings I can’t put into words. You are deeply extraordinary in every way.

“Happy birthday, my darling girl. I hope you know how special you are, and how much light you have brought to all who are lucky enough to know you. Especially me.

“I say it all the time and I will never stop… in the words of Auntie Drew, I was born the day you were born. I love you. Mother.”

Olivia Newton-John: Re-watching Grease highlighted rape culture of the film

This week the 1970s classic grease aired on Nine in prime time viewing in tribute to the very much beloved Olivia Newton-John, who tragically passed away earlier this week. But celebrating grease again is a dangerous game.

Unfortunately, looking at grease through a 2022 lens leaves plenty to be desired. The movie enforces stereotypes, makes rape jokes and trivializes consent. Watching it with fresh eyes feels less nostalgic and more concerning.

I understand our desire to revisit the film, considering Newton-John’s death. It was the film that made her a star. She played Sandy, and she gave a Mary-Sue character dimension and charm.

It was the biggest film of the year when it was released, and it’s still very much a cultural touchstone. Who doesn’t know the words to, You Are The One That I Want? (I bet you’re singing the, ooh ooh ooh’s in your head).

But sadly, besides the chemistry between high school sweethearts Newton-John and John Travolta as Sandy and Danny, the film sends some harrowing messages. Let’s break it down, shall we?

For instance, at the beginning of the iconic movie, Danny brags to his mates about meeting a hot Australian girl during summer break. His friends pestered him for details of the relationship, including the line: “Tell me more, tell me more, did she put up a fight?”

Basically, the guys were making light of the idea of Danny having to force Sandy into sex. As if it would be perfectly acceptable for a guy to push a woman into sex.

Then there’s the scene in the drive-in, Danny is desperately trying to make out with Sandy and make things right. She pushes him away several times and then eventually screams “no” while Danny pins her down and says: “Nobody’s watching!” Ick, right?

Seems more rapey than romantic. If a woman says no, a man shouldn’t touch or force her. He should respect her de ella wishes de ella and not try to talk her into it and a movie romanticizing the opposite is grim.

If that wasn’t stressful enough, when Rizzo, a character in the film becomes pregnant and plans to get an abortion sings the song, There Are Worse Things I Could Do.

“There are worse things I could do, than go with a boy or two…. I could flirt with all the guys, smile at them and bat my eyes. Press against them when we dance, make them think they stand a chance, then refuse to see it through. That’s a thing I’d never do,” she sings.

She is suggesting that the worse thing a woman could be is a tease, which is not true. Women can say no and set boundaries whenever they want. Women have the right to flirt and make eyes, and we don’t need to sleep with a man.

Then there’s the overarching message; ultimately, good girl Sandy turns herself into a more vampy version of herself to earn Danny’s affections. So, the overall message is, change who you are to get the guy? Not very heartening.

I understand it’s a movie, it was made in the 1970s, and we weren’t having such loud and important conversations about consent, but re-watching it feels less like a trip down memory lane and more of a reminder that so much of our aging pop culture references just reinforce rape culture.

I miss Olivia Newton-John, but I think there are better ways to remember her than watching Grease. Her de ella entire body of work de ella and her de ella endlessly contributions de ella to create a better world for everyone speaks volumes, particularly being an advocate for Breast Cancer Awareness.

I’d much rather stare at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Center to remember her than watch her character Sandy wade through misogyny through song and dance.

Nope mixes sci-fi and horror in Get Out director Jordan Peele’s most visually accomplished film yet

In the skies above a dusty ranch on the outskirts of LA, something — or someone — is watching. A mysterious presence, an other-worldly entity. It appears briefly — like a smudged oval shape in a UFO photo — and occasionally it sends earthly debris raining down, like someone tipping out the contents of a celestial handbag.

Coins, keys, bits of plastic and general detritus fall from the sky — you want to watch you don’t get hit by anything sharp.

In writer-director Jordan Peele’s first two films, Get Out and Us, plots involving doppelgangers and body swaps showed us the world is a false front, hiding lethal dangers and dystopian conspiracies. In Nope, the California sky becomes a heavenly Loch Ness, and people turn their cameras on it, trying to capture proof of the sinister thing that lurks behind its clouds, or just beyond the horizon.

Getting the money shot, however, proves to be a life-ending event for some.

A Black man with a beard stands amid film camera
Peele’s 2017 debut Get Out won a slew of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.(Supplied: Universal Studios)

Like Peele’s previous films, the tone of Nope mixes internet urban legend, gallows humor and an appetite for forthright political critique. It’s also wrapped up in a widescreen cinematic package that is his most visually accomplished, and harks back to the blockbusters of the 70s and 80s.

The ranch where the UFO appears belongs to an African American family who train horses for Hollywood. Their patriarch (Keith David) is killed by the entity early in the film, so it’s left to his unassuming but diligent son OJ (an excellent Daniel Kaluuya, reuniting with Peele after his breakout role in Get Out) and fast-talking, prodigal daughter Em (a charming Keke Palmer) to carry on the business.

Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Brandon Perea in Nope
Nope is “about the human addiction to spectacle and the monetization of it,” Peele said at the film’s Hollywood premiere.(Supplied: Universal Studios)

They enlist salesclerk Angel from a big box tech store (a well-cast Brandon Perea, channeling minimum wage ennui) to install an elaborate, off-the-shelf security camera system at their house, to monitor the skies. It’s the kind of DIY flex you might expect from the suburban hero of a 70s Spielberg blockbuster — squint your eyes and Nope could be the love child of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
