Forget Batgirl, where’s Superman Lives? The inside stories of Hollywood’s biggest abandoned films | film industry

WArner Bros’s previously announced Batgirl film is the latest big-budget project that will never see the light of day, despite being in post-production, with shooting already completed. Hollywood is brutal – for every film released there are numerous others that never make it to the big screen. These are projects in which the studios invest millions – only for them to be spurned at the script stage, trapped in that infamous “development hell”, or even halted mid-production. Part of the appeal of abandoned films is that we can build them up in our heads to be whatever we want. But perhaps the most interesting element of these ghost films is the way many continue to haunt cinema: affecting the choices actors and directors go on to make, changing the types of stories that get funding and even, in some cases, weakening long-established studios. . Here, experts give us the inside stories on three films with surprising legacies – despite never having been made…

Torso

Brian Michael Bendis is an award-winning comic book artist. He is the co-author (with Marc Andrewko) of Torso, a 1990s graphic novel based on the true story of the Cleveland Torso Murderer and “Untouchables” agent Elliot Ness‘s efforts to capture him. Film versions by David Fincher and Paul Greengrass were left unmade.

Torso had all the elements of a thing that Hollywood would like: it was true and it was kind of a sequel to a hit movie, The Untouchables: the 1987 Brian De Palma film following Ness in his pursuit of Al Capone.

Marc and I wrote a draft and took it out and it was almost a comedy of errors. We had one very famous producer argue with us whether Eliot Ness was a real person or not. And then, all of a sudden, David Fincher was attached. He’s one of my heroes. It was being positioned as kind of a trilogy with Seven and Zodiac.

It was going to be black and white, Matt Damon was going to be Ness. I don’t know who was cast officially, but all these names were coming at me: John Malkovich, Casey Affleck, Rachel McAdams. It was greenlit, and then something happened where it just went away. And I was like: “Oh well, I got to meet David Fincher, that was pretty cool.” But in my heart, I was like: “No, I did really want to see that movie.”

Then, a couple of years later, Paul Greengrass got attached to it, and I got even more excited. I think I knew what the Fincher movie would look like, but Greengrass – I was like: “What will that be?” I was intrigued. But then that went away.

I want to say: never feel bad for someone who has an option. Someone gives you money to sit there and be still. There isn’t a person on the planet who doesn’t have their projects that haven’t been made yet, things they really want. Maybe it’s just not the time, not the moment. It’s not personal. And Torso is a perfect example – I’ve had a lifetime of really cool interactions and experiences because I don’t have the movie yet.

I made the true graphic novel Fortune and Glory based on my experiences in Hollywood, and it ended up being my biggest commercial book. It’s the thing that people most identified with, because even if they weren’t in Hollywood, they knew what it felt like to go: “That meeting sucked.”

A couple of years ago I was introduced to the director Corin Hardy, and Torso is now being developed as a television series. The saga continues.

superman lives

Holly Payne is a director, producer and writer. she produced The Death of Superman Livesa 2015 documentary written and directed by her late husband Jon Schneppexamining the 1996-98 production of Tim Burton’s Superman adaptationwhich would have starred Nicolas Cage.

For the time that Superman Lives was in pre-production it was a huge endeavor and a big risk. It would have been a radical change to Superman. Nicolas Cage was at the peak of his career, but he was a wildcard. He didn’t necessarily have the rugged Christopher Reeve look, but he brought alienness to it. And that’s what Tim was striving for.

The film would have changed the playing field for superhero films. There is a lot of optimism in Tim Burton films, so there was more of that hopefulness and lightness to it, but still with the Burton aesthetic. It wouldn’t have been dark in color like Batman, but it would have been weird.

Jon Peters [the Burton film’s controversial producer and erstwhile boyfriend of Barbra Streisand] was looking at the George Lucas model. He wanted to world-build, and wasn’t thinking about the character of Superman that is beloved by so many people. The thing we got asked the most about after the documentary came out was: “Is Jon Peters crazy?” Yeah, he kind of is, but we got where he was coming from. His vision of him and Burton’s vision of him did not connect. And I think it had a lot to do with ego. I love that our interview had a bit to do with Paul Thomas Anderson’s depiction of Jon Peters in Licorice Pizza [where he was memorably portrayed by Bradley Cooper]because some of the things that we talked to Peters about showed up in that movie.

Really, the ultimate death knell for the film was budgetary constraints. But it was also the casting, and the struggle between Peters and Burton. The irony is that the money that they didn’t put into Superman Lives they put into [the much-mocked Will Smith action film] Wild Wild West … and then that bombed.

Our motivation for making the documentary was to shine a light on the creatives who put all their inspiration, hard work and ideas into a film that never saw the light of day. Many people who worked on the film came to the premiere and they told us first-hand: “This is incredible. You made me feel like this could have been something and I’m not ashamed to have been a part of this.”

The Girl in Pink Tights

Dr Lucy Bolton is a reader in film studies at Queen Mary University of Londonand you have helped the British Film Institute Run Marilyn Monroe events. The Girl in Pink Tights was a 1954 musical that Monroe turned down.

The Girl in Pink Tights was a Broadway musical – and exactly the type of role that Monroe was fed up with. The studio had found she was great at musical comedies – and she did have brilliant comic timing – but these characters were always dumb blonds, and she felt that mirrored how she was treated by the studios. She had a fractious relationship with producer and studio executive Darryl Zanuck, who, although he made millions out of her, didn’t respect her. She had to fight with him to get taken seriously.

Breaking with the studio was certainly a risk, personally and professionally. Monroe always relied on the people around her, and when the studio renegotiated for more money and more control, her husband Joe DiMaggio in particular thought that she should just do the movie. But she still held out because she was so determined not to. Vulnerability is a massive part of her popular cultural image of her, but in terms of her business of her, and knowing her value of her, she was canny, strong and determined.

Rather than just stay at home and wait for the contractual battle to be resolved, she went out and behaved like the world-leading star that she was, for example, entertaining troops in Korea while on honeymoon. Zanuck completely underestimated the public’s love of Monroe.

There had always been actors who worked independently, right back to Carole Lombard in the 30s, but this was a high-profile battle and it was part of what reduced the power of the big studio bosses. 20th Century Fox took her back with a better contract, but she also set up her own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions. And, even though it only made one film, The Prince and the Showgirl, that’s a terrific performance and she’s amazing in it.

It’s hard to know whether there would have been anything particularly toxic or wonderful about The Girl in Pink Tights. But it spurred Monroe to break with the studio and really assert her independence from her. And I think that the impact of that is immense, because she negotiated to star in The Seven Year Itch, which was her image-defining for her. And with other films she did later (even though some were musicals) such as Bus Stop or Some Like It Hot – were not just the dumb blond movies. There’s more to these roles. And she made that happen herself.

However, it also hosts a horse race which is restricted to two-year-old Thoroughbreds bought at one of their auctions.

Elsa has often been open about her passion for horses and the equestrian sphere.

In August last year, it was revealed that she and her husband of 11 years, Chris Hemsworth, had submitted plans to build a second ‘Westfield-style’ home near their existing Byron Bay mega-mansion.

The A-list couple also came under fire after building a large stable complex on their existing property, knocking the top off a hill to create an enormous horse ring.

‘Apparently his mates call it ‘El Caballo Blanco’ – named after a large equine Andalusian theme park that operated in western Sydney in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s,’ a source told Daily Mail Australia that month.

Elsa spoke about her love of horse riding in an interview with Australian Women’s Health in March last year, and said she had kept her sane during lockdown.

‘When we were in lockdown, I could still ride, so it was [all about] my family, my husband and my horses,’ she told the publication.

‘It’s such a passion, kind of like meditation for me. I think it’s important for your mind to have something you enjoy – a hobby that’s just for you and your time.’

Kate Middleton ditched item as not suited for ‘future Queen’ – Princess Beatrice favorite

A spokesperson from Karen Millen explained Kate Middleton’s use of accessories is “a perfect example of her admirable ability to discreetly use her style to compliment the events she attends.”

The fashion expert explained “the Duchess is quite partial to a luxe headband, or a ‘hatband’, for formal occasions” as worn to events such as Prince Louis’ christening.

The Duchess of Cambridge used to wear hatbands, which is essentially an oversized headband, “whether it was to add some colour-coordination to her outfit or keep her hair from her face”.

The stylist claimed that although Kate’s “accessory choices have routinely scored highly with audiences,” she decided to ditch the headbands and hasn’t been seen wearing one in years.

This is because the royal “does not want to divert too much attention away from the main focus of the event,” the expert claimed.

Instead, the Duchess usually prefers “minimal and tasteful jewellery” to pair with her everyday outfits.

Celebrity stylist and The Feel Good Fashion Coach Miranda Holder commented: “Kate used to be a fan of headbands, but since working closely with her friend and stylist Natasha Archer to develop her own personal brand, they have had no place in her wardrobe.

“Kate’s style personality is more classic and elegant, which suits both her lovely figure and her future role as our Queen.”

Miranda said the more traditional hat is a better option to wear on formal occasions and “she does so with panache and just enough drama to keep fashionistas on their toes”.

DON’T MISS

Princess Beatrice, on the other hand, has been a fan of headbands for years and chooses the accessory for most official engagements.

Miranda explained: “Over recent years, Princess Beatrice has really come into her own in the style stakes.

“She has developed a signature feminine look which is instantly recognizable.

“The Princess has a very soft, feminine style, which she expresses through pretty embellishments, floaty clothing and her trademark headbands or their more substantial relatives the ‘hatbands’.

“These are a less formal, prettier alternative to wearing a hat.”

According to the stylist, headbands “perfectly suit Beatrice’s style personality, which is romantic with a classic twist”.

The expert revealed using a headband is also a fashion trick stylists use to add a bit of flattering volume to the overall silhouette.

By adding a headband to her look, Princess Beatrice “balances out her figure and creates a look which is pleasing to the eye”.

Miranda explained the fashion trick works by “strategically ‘adding volume’ either by literally using bulkier clothing or accessories or by adding embellishments which naturally draw the eye”.

“This is a common trick used by stylists all over the world to help their clients look their best,” Miranda said.

According to the fashion expert, Sarah Burton, the Alexander McQueen designer of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, “took this one step further.”

She used this trick and “literally added padding to Kate’s bottom area, to further balance out her frame, making her waist appear even tinier,” Miranda revealed.

Dame Emma Thompson has hilariously revealed she’s been subtly trying to put her daughter Gaia off acting.

The Love Actually star, 63, who shares the drama student, 22, with fellow thespian Greg Wise, 56, joked she’s been dropping hints that her offspring could ‘run a restaurant’ instead.

She told the Daily Mail’s Eden Confidential: ‘I keep saying, “I know you like acting, but, you know, perhaps running a restaurant can be as exciting.”‘

Emma added of the talented cook: ‘There’s something very theatrical about restaurants — when you get it right, you feel so happy and lucky to be in it.’

Despite other ideas from the Oscar winner, Gaia followed in her mother’s footsteps as she made her TV debut in the latest series of BBC drama Silent Witness.

With her sweet smile and cropped dark hair, Dame Emma’s daughter looked every inch the mini-me.

Earlier this year, Gaia revealed to the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden that she’s prepared to follow her mother’s example and disrobe on screen.

Dame Emma recently bared all in her latest film — Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.

Gaia said: ‘If it’s professionally prepared, and you’ve got the right kind of protection around you, then that’s absolutely fine.’

It comes after Gaia detailed her three-year battle with anorexia – and credited her parents for saving her life by staging an emergency intervention.

The aspiring actress developed anorexia aged 16 which left her so thin she was unable to even sit on a chair without it being painful. She was later admitted to rehab in 2017.

She spoke out about her illness for the first time with The Sun on Sunday, saying ‘Anorexia makes you really good at gaslighting people, making it sound like they’re insane.

‘My parents would say, ‘Gaia, we heard you working out at 3am.’ And I’d say, ‘No you didn’t, it was just the house moving. I was asleep.”

Anorexia is a serious mental illness where a person restricts their food intake, which often causes them to be severely underweight. Many also exercise excessively.

Gaia spoke of how Greg, Emma, and her family, including brother Tindy, 36, and best friend gathered together for an intervention, with Gaia agreeing to a three-month rehab stint after Greg said: ‘I don’t know where my child is any more.’

Adding that it was a ‘kick in the teeth’ she added: ‘I had to listen to the people I loved most in the world who, at the time, I’d really forgotten about, tell me what I was doing.’

She said: ‘That’s when I said I’d go to rehab. I went on December 29, 2017, and stayed for three months. Since then I’ve had a lot of therapy — and I’ll always be grateful for that, because it saved my life.’

The disused pub in the remote town of Yatina, 222km north of Adelaide, has been transformed into the namesake movie centrepiece. Neighbor Ken Cowery told 7NEWS he was surprised when about 100 cast and crew set up next to his home from him.

Private dining gets a makeover in Melbourne, with karaoke, Netflix and show kitchens

Small is proving to be big business in the restaurant industry, with a boom in private dining prompting restaurants of all shapes and sizes to add spaces with quirky touches like a BYO record policy or free karaoke.

Intimate groups of 25 to 30 people are contacting Simon Blacher’s casual southside restaurants Tokyo Tina and Moonhouse for everything from end-of-financial year bashes to 21st birthdays.

“I know moving forward, any restaurant that we open will definitely have a private dining option associated with it,” says Blacher.

Armadale wine bar Auterra says the biggest demand for its new 12-seat private dining space is from groups of friends simply catching up.

Melburnians are cottoning on to the benefits of private dining rooms, flocking to them for dinner party vibes that feel more COVID-safe and don’t come with any of the hard parts of hosting.

They’re an attractive prospect right now for restaurants, too. The exclusive rooms, which typically offer set menus and beverage packages, are easier for venues to staff and usually attract consumers who are in the mood to spend.

In the last 12 months, Blacher’s Commune Group has added two private dining areas to its portfolio of venues.

One of these is an offshoot of popular Windsor restaurant Tokyo Tina. Called Tokyo Private, it has its own entrance on Chapel Street and is built for fun, with a karaoke machine included in the price.

Blacher says when it opened last October it had five to eight bookings per week, and sometimes up to 10. While that’s plateaued slightly over winter, it’s still doing an average of three functions a week, “which is still fantastic”.

Private rooms may once have been associated with exclusive or pricey restaurants but some operators, including Commune Group, are showing they can come in all shapes and sizes, with quirky touches to boot.

In Thornbury, a neighborhood trattoria Umberto added a private room last year that comes with a TV for movie nights, a card table, a record player and a buzzer for service. The venue asks you to be a member to book the room, but at $330 a year, that’s not as exclusive as it sounds.

“The membership growth has exceeded our expectations,” says co-owner Carla Barbieri. “We’re approaching capacity and anticipate taking applications for a waiting list.”

Blacher has also been pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm for both Tokyo Private and an exclusive space upstairs at his latest venue Moonhouse in Balaclava.

He acknowledges that COVID caution may be a contributing factor in people booking events away from the main dining room. Some diners have more peace of mind if everyone in their group has done a RAT before dinner, for example.

But overall Blacher thinks it’s a festive spirit and desire for smaller celebrations that’s driving demand.

“Sitting down with a select group of friends rather than everyone you’ve ever met is a trend we’re seeing [for celebrations],” he says.

In these days of timed bookings, getting a table together for a whole night of uninterrupted fun is also another factor in the popularity of private dining.

Auterra’s general manager Gareth Burnett says since the Armadale wine bar opened its upstairs private dining room in May, the most common bookings are for birthdays or intimate catch-ups among friends.

But, with spring in sight, he says festive season inquiries are coming thick and fast.

Celebrating your big moments your way is the idea behind the Rosarno Room, located upstairs and hidden behind a peep hole at this modest neighborhood trattoria. Pop your own vinyl on the record player, stream your favorite film via Apple TV or get the card table out. There’s even a buzzer for service. “It’s like the idea of a clubhouse but not like the old, stuffy ones we may picture in our minds,” says co-owner Carla Barbieri. The catch is that you must be a member to partake, a privilege that costs $330 a year. But can you really put a price on street credit?

The best part is you’re not doing the cooking. Soaring ceilings, an inlaid brass tabletop and a gilt mirror add a luxe touch, as do the private bathroom and kitchen. But mismatched chairs and napkins in bright colors inject some fun. Brown donuts and soft-serve with whiskey caramel continue the high-low theme.

Tokyo Private

Groups of between 14 and 28 can book out this understated space next door to Tokyo Tina – and it’s all yours for as long as your heart desires. The no-timed-bookings policy is a rarity these days, while the karaoke system is a kitschy (and free!) touch. Food is a likeable mix of mod-Australian meets Japanese: think katsu prawn buns or umeboshi-glazed duck, washed down with Kirin Ichiban lager and whiskey highballs. You can also play your own music via Spotify and kids are welcome.

Society

By far the ritziest option on this list (and perhaps in Melbourne), Society’s Green Room comes with a private entrance and its own kitchen, chef and sommelier, so you truly will be getting something no one else in the restaurant has. Tucked upstairs and decked out with meters of timber, stone and glass, the 20-seat room has hosted athletes, celebrities and anyone else who loves the VIP treatment. With a price tag starting at $4500, file this one under special occasion.

moon house

Sweeping art deco curves define this iconic Balaclava building, recently reborn as a contemporary Cantonese restaurant. That’s particularly true upstairs where private events take place across a cocktail bar and dining room. A crescent-shaped booth for eight people in the bar is perhaps the best seat in the house, tucked into a nook of the building with views of Carlisle Street in either direction. In the neighboring room, a long table for 30 can play host to feasts of wontons, beef with black bean and luxe items like mud crab. A separate entrance and bathrooms add to the exclusive feel.

Rocco’s Bologna Nightclub

Creating sumptuous spaces is the ninja skill of Rocco’s owners, who also operate Poodle further along Gertrude Street. Private dining here might look like an intimate 20-person table in one half of the upstairs ballroom with checkerboard floors. Larger events can spread over the entire room and adjoining Vince’s Bar, giving you access to an outdoor terrace and your own bar star. Two fireplaces, timber joinery, mosaic tiles and fun spins on Italian dishes spell out good times galore.

Larry Emdur walks off in hysterics live on-air – leaving co-host Kylie Gillies confused

Larry Emdur has had a serious case of the giggles, laughing so hard that he had to momentarily abandon a segment on Friday’s The Morning Show.

The hilarity began when the normally unflappable Larry – widely known for his composure and immaculate articulation – tried to pronounce a dinosaur name.

But his attempt at “diplodocus” came out completely wrong, sounding more like “dipo-lacko-ducko-dos”.

After his failed try at the word, co-host Kylie Gillies corrected him.

Larry then tried to continue with the script – but became totally immersed in a giggling fit.

Composing himself just long enough to be able to speak again, he protested that the way he had pronounced “diplodocus” was the way that “everyone says it”.

“It’s not just me,” he insisted.

The laughter continued, with Larry doubling over as he giggled, before waving his hand about, as if telling the cameras to stop rolling on him.

A still-incapacitated Larry then began shaking his head, before momentarily walking off camera.

Somewhat confused, Kylie asked him: “Did I say something wrong? No what, tell me”, before inviting Larry back into camera view.

Larry grabbed his glasses and tried to re-read his script, as Kylie asked, “What, diplodocus?… I don’t get it.”

Joking, Larry then said, “Please, (you) read the words.”

‘I don’t understand’

Kylie tried to continue with the segment, but ‘laughing Larry’ was not done.

Wanting to make his point, he said that “All I was saying was that people say that”, referring to his unique pronunciation of “diplodocus”.

“But I don’t know if that’s the word, exactly,” he said.

Kylie looked over to the producers off-camera, laughing, before telling her co-host “I don’t understand”.

Larry then asked Kylie how she pronounced “diplodocus”, prompting her to gently sledge him.

“No, no, no,” she joked, “You didn’t know the word (diplodocus) and you made it up (the pronunciation).”

Larry eventually managed to snap back into focus and continue with the segment.

His uncontrolled laughing fit was a rare departure from his normal on-screen composition.

Away from The Morning Show, Larry is also known for his laser-sharp focus and crisp diction as host of The Chase Australia.

Ms Frank was raised in the Burmese capital of Rangoon before her family fled the invasion of the country by Japan.

After spending the war in a refugee camp in Calcutta, she and her family then went to London.

During the 1950s she came to Melbourne to visit her sister and stayed, forging a path as a prominent member of Melbourne society.

One of the first hairdressers in Australia to be trained at Elizabeth Arden, Ms Frank set up her own hairdressing salon in the 1960s, becoming famous as the hair stylist for Jean Shrimpton when the model infamously wore a mini skirt at the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

On June 11, 1977, Ms Frank was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her involvement with charities, including the Royal Children’s Hospital and Odyssey House in Melbourne.

In 1991 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her service to the community.

JACKIE FRANK’S FULL TRIBUTE TO HER MOTHER LILLIAN

Last night we lost the heart and soul of our family.

She lived life to the max, without any regrets and was forever grateful.

She saw things through rose colored glasses. No matter what adversity she had to face, and there were many, she saw the good in everyone and everything.

Not many of you will know she was born in Burma, in 1930, fled to India during the war before being sent to her Aunt in the UK finally to make Australia her home.

Forever trying to make a difference in the world. She used her de ella flamboyant personality and social standing for good, raising millions and millions for charity.

She had a very public life and I was often asked what’s it like growing up with Lillian Frank as your mum? My answer, to us she was mum, to my children nani and the most spectacular selfless human being in the world with the biggest heart.

We ❤️ you but a piece of our hearts will be broken forever.
