Movie review: Delicious mystery homage Murder Party delivers on fun and games

Murder Party’s title is deceptively simple. But within those two words are several puzzle boxes and twists.

That’s the fun of it, and murder party knows exactly what it’s about.

It also knows exactly where it comes from and why a moviegoer might choose to buy a ticket to a film called murder party. It has one purpose – entertain and challenge the keenest of murder mystery fans – and it delivers on that promise.

A French farce that revels in the tropes of its delicious genre, murder party owes almost everything to all of its predecessors. There’s the obvious one, Knives Outaping even its distinct font in the movie’s marketing.

But there’s a raft of influences ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Cluedoand its full embrace of the thrills and conventions of all that came before is why murder party is such a charming and entertaining little movie.

Architect Jeanne (Alice Pol) is called to the isolated country estate of a games empire family to present her vision for their grand renovations. Upon arriving, she realizes the family – patriarch Cesar (Eddy Mitchell), his son Theo (Pablo Pauly), his daughter Lena (Sarah Stern), his wife Salome (Pascale Arbillot), his sister Jo (Miou-Miou) and butler Armand (Gustave Kervern) – are all a bit kooky.

When Cesar drops dead, seemingly poisoned, the murder mystery game the family were engaged in, kicks in for real. A voice over a PA tells them that they must play a series of games to uncover the killer. If they guess correctly, they’ll be freed. If they’re wrong, they’ll be killed. If they don’t play at all, also dead.

The reserved Jeanne is a reluctant joiner but the quest for survival is a great motivator.

There is so much here for genre fans to drink in. There’s the conspicuous hat-tip to the godmother of closed house mysteries, Agatha Christie, with its ensemble of cloistered characters and limited suspects running around a baroque mansion.

The use of bold flashing color evokes Vertigo while the outsider among the games empire family recalls 2019 slasher comedy Ready or Not. The second game in the film is an escape room challenge while it also has flashes of fellow French dark comedy 8 women.

murder party is a cornucopia of references but rather than descend into some prosaic mishmash, it’s a clever and playful homage.

Like the Cluedo moviebeforeit, murder party clearly loves the genre and it’s inviting the audience to be part of the fun and games. And it’ll manage to keep you guessing with a few tricks you won’t see coming.

Rating: 3/5

Johnny Depp lawyer Camille Vasquez responds after Amber Heard ‘ignites the Twitter bonfires’

Johnny Depp’s hotshot lawyer Camille Vasquez has conducted her first sit-down interview after Amber Heard officially filed a notice of appeal over the $US10 million verdict in the former couple’s defamation case.

A spokesman for Heard announced the appeal move with a statement appearing to pre-empt social media reaction earlier in July.

“We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment,” the spokesman said.

“We are therefore appealing the verdict.

“While we realize today’s filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice.”

Speaking to CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King on Friday, Vasquez said Heard’s appeal was “expected.”

“She’s indicated since the day she lost the trial that she was going to appeal.”

Vasquez said Depp’s team had prepared a strategy to deal with that.

“Mr Depp ended up filing his own appeals so that the court could have a full record.

“She insists on continuing to litigate this matter. We have to protect our client’s interests.”

Vasquez’s reference to Depp’s “own appeals” refers to the fact he has also filed an appeal against the jury’s ruling that he had defamed Heard via comments made by his attorney Adam Waldman in 2020.

Following Depp’s courtroom win, the actor told fans: “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun.”

King asked Vasquez: “How do you heal and move on when both sides are still in court arguing?”

“It’s pretty standard legal procedure,” Vasquez said.

“We just are hopeful that the court will uphold the verdict, which we think was the right verdict, and allow both parties to move on.”

“So is it safe to say that if she hadn’t appealed you all would not have appealed either and you would have moved on?” King asked.

“Yes,” Vasquez answered. “That’s a very fair statement.”

Before the official notice of appeal, Heard’s lawyers had unsuccessfully asked Judge Penney Azcarate to set aside the verdict and “investigate potential improper juror service”.

Among a variety of arguments, Heard’s lawyers suggested one juror on the panel may have been selected illegally.

According to court papers, a summons went out to a 77-year-old man.

But the man who responded in his place was his 52-year-old son, who has the same name and lives at the same address.

However, in a written order Judge Penney Azcarate rejected all of Heard’s claims and said the juror issue specifically was irrelevant and that Heard can’t show she was prejudiced.

“The juror was vetoed, sat for the entire jury, deliberated, and reached a verdict. The only evidence before this Court is that this juror and all jurors followed their oaths, the Court’s instructions, and orders.

“This Court is bound by the competent decision of the jury,” Azcarate wrote.

Peach PRC got hate for her cover of the iconic Teenage Dirtbag but Wheatus loved it

When Adelaide-born pop musician and TikTok darling Peach PRC was offered the chance to record two Spotify Singlesshe was ecstatic.

The 25-year-old covered iconic band Wheatus’ even more iconic hit ‘Teenage Dirtbag’, as well as a reimagined version of her own single ‘God Is A Freak,’ and from her social media “bubble” the reviews were raving.

Then, comments from a wider audience rolled in.

“the amount of 🤟🏻men🤟🏻who are being so mean about my teenage dirtbag cover lol they act like metallica is gonna walk in their living room and hand them a beer for pointing out autotune. being a loser takes inches off your hairline grow up,” Peach tweeted last month in response to the trolls – but the criticism, despite her mammoth online following and presence, was a new experience for her.

“I actually don’t get a lot of [trolls],” Peach, whose real name is Shaylee Curnow, tells 9Honey Celebrity via Zoom. “I feel like I only noticed that when my music [was] shared through a platform that isn’t mine.”

Peach says she’s usually in a “bubble” online, and her followers and those she follows were “excited” to listen to her singles and only had “positive” things to say about it.

“When a different platform shows my stuff and it’s to a new audience, people are like, ‘What the f–k is this?’ I’m like, so taken back,” she says.

The ‘Josh’ hitmaker acknowledges that “of course” her songs will not be liked by everyone, but for her, the criticism was “jarring” to see.

Usually, Peach says, she wouldn’t acknowledge the trolls, but because the singles were shared far and wide – Wheatus actually retweeted it on their own platform – it was overwhelming.

The band actually privately messaged her their approval of her cover, and gave her some heartwarming advice.

“They were like, ‘I think it’s awesome, it’s really fun.’ Like, you know, ‘F–k what the haters are saying. Like, they hated it when we put it out 20 years ago. So like, don’t stress about it,'” she recalls, noting the band also said if she was to ever perform the song in New York City to let them know so they can come out and support it.

“It was so cool,” she says. “And so I was just like all the men that were just like, ‘You’ve ruined it.’ I’m like, ‘I haven’t taken the original away from you. Don’t listen to it.’ I’m like, ‘Wheatus even likes it.’ Grow up, get over it.

“A lot of artists, I’m sure, would love seeing their song reinvented years and years later. Like, I’d be really flattered if someone did a cover of my song 20 years later and it was like a whole new sound. I’d be stoked about it.”

Peach’s over 1.9 million TikTok following and almost 250,000 Instagram followers are, like many high-profile creators, largely from users who lived vicariously through social media throughout lockdown – and the shift from her online notoriety to her real post-lockdown day-to-day life was one that had some hiccups.

Particularly for Peach, who is known for being open about everything from her sexuality to her mental health or synesthesia or relationships (her debut single ‘Josh’ was about her ex, actually named Josh), personal boundaries during lockdown were something she did not prioritize , and it’s something she’s now reevaluating.

“At the time I never really cared about it,” she says. “I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, like this is, I’m just sharing myself. I don’t know any other way to be. I want to talk about these things.’ I’m talking about them and like, there’s nothing that was really off-limits for me.

“Now, I guess, things have progressed more in my career and with my audience, and there’s things that I said a while ago, that I’m like, ‘I probably wish I kept that to myself.'”

Those things, for Peach, are mainly to do with her “personal wellbeing” and “growth,” something that goes back and forth when she sometimes “falls back into bad habits.”

“People are holding me to such a standard because of what I’ve said previously about the way I’m living or whatever,” she says.

READMORE: Young filmmaker’s sweet moment with Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho after they were locked out of a Sydney bar

At the end of the day, however, Peach says while she is still “figuring out” the balance between what’s too personal and not “healthy” to share and what’s not – creators, after all, make their personhood a business – being transparent is something she overwhelmingly sees as a “positive” thing that’s “worth the backlash.”

As her online fame bleeds into the offline, Peach says her lack of personal boundaries can actually be “nice” when somebody approaches her on the street.

“It’s kind of nice sometimes, because it’s like, ‘Okay, they already know me, I don’t need to make a first impression or worry about what they’re going to think of me,'” she says. “They already know. I can’t really go wrong from there.”

The mortifying order of being known, however, can at times be a double-edged sword – especially when people approach her when she’s going about her day, and want to talk to her about personal tidbits, which sometimes span quite heavy topics, she’s shared on social media.

“I have to remind myself that in that moment, it’s not really just about me,” she says.

“Somebody is just really excited to share something vulnerable with me or relate to me in that way or they’re wanting to just be like, ‘I’m so proud of you’ for this and that.

“It’s a really beautiful, sweet sentiment. So I try not to be in my head about like, ‘Oh, I really don’t want to delve into, like, my emotional side and like what I’m going through right now. ‘ I just take it for what it is in that moment and then kind of leave it in that moment and just go back to my grocery shopping and leave it with them.”

Freeze Frame: Miley Cyrus shattered her ‘innocent’ Disney Channel reputation with a single magazine photo

Miley Cyrus wasn’t always the outspoken, rebellious musician she is today.

In the mid-2000s, the former Disney Channel darling was the picture of innocence thanks to her breakout role on the wildly popular series Hannah Montana.

The bigwigs at Disney were obsessed with maintaining the teenage popstar’s clean-cut image. During interviews, Cyrus openly spoke about her virginity and even claimed she wore a purity ring.

“I like to think of myself as the girl that no one can get, that no one can keep in their hand,” she told TVGuide in 2008.

“Even at my age, a lot of girls are starting to fall and I think if [staying a virgin] is a commitment girls make, that’s great.”

Cyrus, then aged just 15, was a teen idol to millions of young girls around the world. She was under enormous pressure to be a role model for her legion of impressionable fans.

But Cyrus inadvertently shattered her innocent child star image with a controversial magazine photo that sent shockwaves through industry and her fanbase.

In April 2008, the ‘Malibu’ singer appeared in the pages of Vanity Fair in a daring pose, shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

In the photo, Cyrus posed shirtless while clutching a white satin sheet. Immediately, it became a huge scandal for the young actress.

The interview accompanying the photo also upset fans. In it, Cyrus discussed her from her favorite TV show Sex and the City and the controversial party girl stars Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears.

After it hit the stands, the photo made headlines – including the New York Post’s frontpage, which reads: “MILEY’S SHAME”.

The publication described the photoshoot as “semi-nude” and many saw it as a strange deviation away from her brand as Disney’s wholesome Hannah.

In a bit to salvage her squeaky clean reputation, Cyrus was forced to apologize for her career misstep.

“I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic,’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about,” she said.

“It was every one’s poisonous thoughts and minds that ended up turning this into something that wasn’t meant to be.”

“I never intended for any of this to happen, and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.”

Disney even stepped in to decry Cyrus’ photoshoot, claiming the interview was a “manipulation” of the teenage star.

“Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines,” a spokesperson said at the time.

Leibovitz was also forced to defend her creative vision after the photos were published.

“I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted,” she said in a statement.

“Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”

Cyrus’ parents had been on-set with her during the first-half of the interview and photoshoot, however sources claimed only her grandmother and teacher remained when the infamous shot was taken.

“Annie convinced them it was going to be artistic. Her parents are mortified. They know this is a learning moment for Miley,” an insider told People at the time.

“The photo suggests that she is [naked], but she is not. She is covered by a sheet, and beneath the sheet she is clothed. Originally, she she was in a flesh-colored tank top but she was asked to remove it.”

After the scandal, Cyrus went on to play Hannah Montana for a further three years, releasing a film and several albums as the fictional popstar.

Once she was free from her Disney contract, the singer-turned-actress sparked even more controversy in the following years.

Her most notable scandal was in 2013, when Cyrus performed at the VMAs alongside Robin Thicke and twerked and gyrated on a giant foam finger.

By now, Cyrus had completely shed her wholesome image as Hannah Montana.

“Not only was culture changed, but my life and career were changed forever,” Cyrus later told Wonderland of that performance.

“It inspired me to use my platform for something much bigger. If the world is going to focus on me and what I am doing, then what I am doing should be impactful and it should be great.”

Armed with her new rebellious reputation, Cyrus decided to take aim at her critics in 2018 – a decade after the controversial Vanity Fair photos were published.

Cyrus tweeted an image of the new york post front page which read “Miley’s Shame” and wrote the following message: “I’M NOT SORRY. F— YOU #TENYEARSAGO.”

speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live about rescinding her apology, Cyrus said, with hindsight, she realized how unfair the shaming was over her photos.

“I guess it was apparently 10 years ago and I think a lot of things have changed and I think the conversation has changed a lot,” she explained.

“And I think something that I really thought about was, you know, sure people thought that I did something wrong in their eyes.

“But I think it was really wrong of someone to put on top of someone that this is my shame and I should be ashamed of myself. That’s not a nice thing to tell someone that they should be ashamed of themselves. Besides Donald Trump.”

Cyrus said people misconstructed an artful photo as something more sinister, simply because she was underage.

“There was nothing sexualized about this on set,” the ex-Hannah Montana star said.

“It was every one’s poisonous thoughts and minds that ended up turning this into something that wasn’t meant to be. So actually, I should not be ashamed.”

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck won’t last, first husband Ojani Noa says

Bennifer 2.0 is destined for divorce, Jennifer Lopez’s first husband has said.

Ojani Noa, 48, claims his ex-wife “loves being in love” but loses interest after the passion in her marriages fizzle, The Daily Mailreported.

Mr Noa — who met J-Lo when he was a Cuban refugee waiting tables in Miami — has kept a low profile since his one-year union with Jenny from the Block dissolved in 1998, reported the new york post.

He told the outlet her recent nuptials with Ben Affleck brought back a rush of old memories.

“Ben is husband number four. I was husband number one and she told me I was the love of her life. When we lay in bed on our wedding night, she said we would be together forever,” he said.

In addition to being married four times, Lopez, 53, has been engaged six times, including twice to the Good Will Hunting actor, some 20 years apart.

Mr Noa fled Cuba on an inflatable boat when he was 15 and survived the 150km journey to the US. I found working washing dishes at Gloria Estefan’s Ocean Drive restaurant Lario’s On The Beach by the age of 22.

“Miami was buzzing. I did some modelling. I hustled. I wanted the American dream – and I found it when Jen walked into Lario’s,” he reportedly said.

“I had no idea who she was. Our eyes glanced at each other and I thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen.”

The next night Lopez came back to the bar and Mr Noa served her another customer’s French fries after she said they looked “yummy”, according to the report.

“I was smitten. She was wearing a white top and trousers, and I remember thinking she had the best body I’d ever seen. She later told me she knew that first night she was going to marry me, ”Mr Noa reportedly recalled.

Later that night, the duo partied at a club called Commune, according to Mr Noa.

“When we got to the club my friend Leo took Jen to the dance floor, and I thought, ‘Oh man, you’re a lucky guy.’ Then she (her friend of her) said, ‘When they get back, take Jen out there. It’s you she’s interested in.’

“They get back and I take her hand and lead her on to the floor, and a slow song comes on. It was electric. She was shaking and said, ‘You make me nervous’.

“We could both feel the romantic energy. It was instant and intense. Like it was surging through our bodies. I said, ‘I feel the same way you’re feeling’. I lifted her chin and gave her a kiss – it was a kiss like we’d known each other forever.”

While the two shared a goodnight kiss, a passer-by exclaimed “Oh my God, that’s Jennifer Lopez from ‘Money Train’,” Mr Noa remembered. “That’s when I realized maybe she was somebody.”

“The next morning my pager goes off. Jen had to see me before her flight from her. The door goes and I open it and she falls into my arms. We kissed, and as she drove off in her limo, she looked back like in the movies and I thought, ‘This is it. This is crazy’,” Mr Noa told the Email.

While Lopez was in Los Angeles, Mr Noa talked to her frequently from the payphone at the restaurant, according to the Email. When she returned to Florida, the actor invited him to be her date de ella for the blood and wine premiere.

“I rented a cheap suit. We got to the red carpet, there were all these flashing lights and screaming fans. I started to feel sick. I walked down the carpet holding her hand then stood to the side while she gave interviews.

“I heard her say, ‘Jack, I want you to meet my date, Ojani.’ I turned around and she was introducing me to Jack Nicholson. Then she said, ‘This is Michael’ – and it was Michael Caine. I felt like I was in a movie. A few years earlier I was on a dinghy in the ocean running away from Fidel Castro, and now I’m on a red carpet. Michael Caine was lovely. He said, ‘Don’t worry, you will get used to it’.”

After the premiere the couple consummated their relationship, Mr Noa told the outlet.

“That was the first time we made love. It was perfect. She was perfect. We lay there afterwards and she said, ‘I want you to always be in my life. I love you’. I felt like Mr. Cinderella,” he reportedly said.

Noa said he believed the relationship worked because he wasn’t impressed by her celebrity.

“She’s a traditional girl. She comes from a humble Puerto Rican family. She wanted someone to protect her, someone who would stand up for her. We fell totally in love,” he said, according to the article.

“I quit my job and moved to LA. We lived in a nice apartment. But soon we moved into our first house and then the houses kept getting bigger. She loved that I was a balseros (rafter) from Cuba. I never wanted anything from her. I always worked and had my own money,” he said about life with the Bronx native.

“We’d been together about six months when she got Selena. We went to San Antonio, Texas, for the shoot and every night we’d come back to the hotel and she’d collapse in my arms filled with insecurity. She didn’t think she was good enough. In the middle of the night she would burst into tears. I comforted her and said she was the best, that she was killing it.

“She loves shopping, and when she wasn’t filming we went to the local mall. One day we went into a jewelery store and she started looking at rings. She pointed at one and said, ‘I love that one’.

“She left and I pretended I needed to go to the rest room. I snuck back in the store and told the girl to put it to one side. I had money saved up. I’d been working as her personal trainer but also had modeling money. The ring was US$15,000 (A$21,400) – a fortune back then. I hid the ring in a plastic bag behind the sink.”

Mr Noa proposed to Lopez at the wrap party for the critically acclaimed film, according to the report.

“Everyone was cheering. I went down on one knee and gave her the ring. She was crying and laughing and said ‘Yes!’,” he reportedly recalled.

Tensions developed when Lopez’s mother chastised her for deciding to get married in Florida instead of the Bronx, according to the article.

“Jen would be in tears all the time. Her mum de ella was calling and yelling at her, trying to get her to change the venue. So I called (Jen’s mother Guadalupe Lopez) Lupe and said, ‘You need to stop this’. That was a big mistake. From then on there was tension between me and Lupe.”

Lopez soon started to change with increasing money and fame, the jilted lover reportedly said.

“She went from Jen to being J-Lo, this big business bringing in millions. She had all these new people around her, all wanting to make money off her. I would call and an assistant would say, ‘Sorry, she’s not available’. ”

When Mr Noa was tasked with launching Lopez’s LA nightclub, he would see published pictures of his wife with Puff Daddy, who was producing some of her music in New York, according to the article.

“I rang Jen and asked why she was going out with him on dates and she said, ‘It’s just business. This is what I’m being told I have to do’. I was jealous and would scream, ‘But you are married!’”

“We wanted kids, we discussed having kids. Then she told me she could not have a baby because it would interfere with her career, ”he lamented.

Mr Noa and Lopez went on Oprah, where she denied the marriage was in trouble.

“Our whole life became a lie,” Mr Noa said, remembering he lost 17kg due to the stress of the facade.

“We went to the Golden Globes and sat with Jack (Nicholson). He said, “You guys look so happy.” I told him, ‘It’s not what it seems’. He told me to hang in there. I never thought I would be getting relationship advice from Jack Nicholson.”

After 11 months, the couple divorced and Lopez dated Puff Daddy publicly soon after.

Mr Noa was left with $50,000 in a settlement agreement and continued to wear his ring as the two remained close, according to the report.

“There were times she told me she wanted to get back together. In quiet moments she would say, ‘I need you in my life. I don’t want to lose you’,” Mr Noa reportedly remembered.

Lopez’s brief marriage with Chris Rudd dissolved and Affleck popped the question for the first time before she had officially split from her backup dancer.

Two years later, in 2004, Lopez would get hitched to Marc Anthony. The pair stayed together for 10 years.

The actress hired Mr Noa to manage a Los Angeles restaurant around 2002 but fired him three years later. He sued her, settled, and moved back to Florida where he has not remarried, according to the article.

Mr Noa said he believes he could have made it last with Lopez if it were not for “parasites who feed off celebrities” and media reports that characterized him as a “penniless waiter,” the report said.

“I wish her and Ben the best, but I’m not convinced it will last,” Mr Noa said.

“I think she’s someone who will be married seven or eight times. I can’t see her ever settling down with one person. She pushes herself to constantly go forward in her professional life, which is why she’s had a three-decade career, but she also moves on in her private life.

“If Ben has Lupe on his side then maybe he’s got a chance,” Mr Noa told the Emailsmiling.

Edna Sheppard is an inspiring 100-year-old fitness fanatic who goes to the gym three times a week – proving that age truly is just a number.

The great-grandmother has been a loyal member of the Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Center in Melbourne’s north for 40 years.

Despite her age, Edna can do full push-ups, sit-ups, planks, barbell squats and workouts while holding 5kg weights in each hand.

‘I do enjoy exercising, it makes me feel good and it’s important to keep the body moving,’ Edna told FEMAIL.

In the 1980s when her late-husband Max retired at 60 she ‘didn’t want him sitting at home doing nothing’, so she signed them both up to classes at the leisure centre.

These days she goes to the gym every Monday and Friday taking part in tai chi, aerobics and weights classes – and on Wednesdays she walks with the club. Sometimes she participates in up to five classes a week.

‘We do weights and all kinds of floor exercises, which I like,’ she said.

From the age of three through to her teenage years Edna loved dancing and did calisthenics. When she was a young adult she also took part in ballroom dancing.

‘At the age of 11 I won the prize for the ‘best physical culture child’ in Victoria,’ she recalled.

In previous years Edna took part in eight classes a week, including swimming classes and Zumba.

On days when she doesn’t feel like working out she still manages to put her sneakers on and visit the leisure center for a training session.

‘I do what I can – you need to know what you can and can’t do as you age,’ she said.

During Covid lockdowns when the gyms were closed Edna worked out in the comfort of her own home using dumbbells.

And her main piece of advice to others is to ‘try hard’ and ‘keep moving’ but to also ‘understand your body’.

‘Make sure you know what you can do and what you can’t do, it’s not good pushing yourself or hurting yourself,’ she said.

When asked what her secret is to live a long and happy life, Enda said the key is to take care of your body and be kind.

‘I have never smoked or drank alcohol and I’ve always exercised as much as I could,’ she said.

What I know about men

Ione Sky is an actor, best known for the films Say Anything and Gas Food Lodging. The 51-year-old talks about becoming friends with her teenage crush, marrying young, and her wild years with Anthony Kiedis.

My maternal grandfather, Benjamin Stulberger, was a big part of my childhood as my parents were separated when I was born, and I was raised solely by my mother. His Hungarian roots meant his family was very important to him and my relationship with him made me feel very confident. My grandfather served in World War II and taught me songs from the 1930s and 1940s. He was left-leaning and actively political, a classic New York Jew.

Ione Skye on her relationship with Anthony Kiedis: “I was 17, so innocent, and I didn't know what was coming my way.”

my mumEnid Karl, never complained about my father [British folk singer Donovan]. My paternal grandparents were very proud of their son of him and I grew up listening to his music of him. As a kid in school, I wanted to brag that he was my father but he never did. It was a strange feeling to be proud of my dad but also wonder, “Who is this guy?” I ended up having a relationship with Dad when I was a teenager and it has continued since.

My brother Donovan and I are like yin and yang. He was born tap-dancing out of the womb. He started acting as soon as he could. He has an infectious personality. He got me into my career because he came home one day saying they were auditioning teenagers for a movie and wrangled me in. It was a lead role in River’s Edge [1986]. It was my first job and it started my career.

My first boyfriend was a rich kid called Sean. I was 14 and he was 15. I grew up in a bohemian home, but I wanted to get the most popular guy that everyone at my all-girls’ school was talking about, and I did. We dated for a year. I liked being chased but felt more comfortable being the one in control. I didn’t want things to come out of the blue. I wanted to decide when we’d kiss or not.

I had a crush on John Taylor from Duran Duran when I was growing up. If you’d told me at that age that I’d be friends with him later, I’d be like, “No way.” My friend Amanda de Cadenet was married to him in the 1990s.

“My first husband was Adam Horowitz from Beastie Boys. We were madly in love but we were too young. It didn’t last.”

I worked with director Cameron Crowe when I made the film Say Anything in 1989. He reminds me of my husband, musician Ben Lee. He loves women and is a confident man. Sometimes I don’t like it when men are too confident because I get jealous, but there is a natural and loving way he treats women which I like.

Male stars throwing gender fashion rules out the window

This week, Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt showed it’s not just Millenials who can get away with challenging gender fashion roles when he wore a skirt to the Berlin premiere of his latest movie Bullet Train.

When asked on the red carpet why he chose to wear a skirt, the 58-year-old simply said: “The breeze. The breeze.”

Brad has hinted before at wanting men to feel more comfortable in skirts telling fashion in 2004: “Men will be wearing skirts by next summer. That’s my prediction and proclamation.”

Brad was promoting his film Troy at the time and wearing the garments of the period had obviously sparked something in him.

“The film answers to both genders. We were going for realism and Greeks wore skirts all the time then,” he said.

Brad is not the first man in Hollywood to wear a skirt though.

In 1998, at the height of his footballing career and just after getting engaged to Posh Spice Victoria, David Beckham was mocked for wearing a sarong.

“Sarongs are great. That’s one thing I never regret because I thought it looked great and I would still wear it now,” he told ITV in 2014.

In fact, some of the most fashion-forward men have shown just how good a guy can look when they wear what they want instead of what they should!

Harry Styles

Former boy band member, singer, actor and model Harry Styles doesn’t have time for what people want him to be as he is too busy being himself.

“As a kid I definitely liked fancy dress,” he told Vogue.

In a school play, he was cast as a church mouse, “I was really young, and I wore tights for that,” he recalls, “I remember it was crazy to me that I was wearing a pair of tights. And that was maybe where it all kicked off!

“There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never thought too much about what it means—it just becomes this extended part of creating something”

The star was all tattoos and Gen Y sexuality as Josh in the TV series younger, but Nico is in an open polyamorous relationship with American lifestyle entrepreneur Bethany Meyers and they each consider themselves gender fluid.

“I never labeled myself as sexually fluid,” Nico told vulture magazine. “I like emotionally fluid more than sexually fluid.

“I am the Future Man.”

And maybe they are!

He plays tough guy Dominic in the Fast&Furious franchise but that doesn’t mean Vin is afraid of the breeze.

The action hero rocked a leather skirt at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2003.

This was probably him paying homage to Scotland’s national dress given the event was held in Edinburgh, but the leather twist on the kilt definitely blurred some lines.

The eldest child of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jaden, has been given more freedom than many children of his age.

And fashion is one area in which Jaden chooses to express himself.

In fact at just 18, Jaden was the first male model to model women’s wear for the French label Louis Vuitton.

“If I Wanna Wear A Dress, Then I Will, And That Will Set The New Wave.” I tweeted in 2018.

Actor and Saturday night Live alum Pete Davidson may be dating a Kardashian but he’s not afraid of pushing stereotypes when it comes to what he wears.

“I’m excited for how easy it is to pee. You can literally just lift it up,” he told GQ magazine about wearing a tunic to the 2021 Met Gala.

“If you’re gonna wear a dress, what better way or place to do it than the Met, do you know?” he added, “I’m really excited and really stoked that they thought I could pull this off, which is hilarious.”

He’s dated some of the hottest actresses in Hollywood including Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong’o, Katy Perry and even our very own Isabel Lucas, but actor Jared Leto has never been afraid of wearing a skirt.

“Real men wear skirts,” he tweeted back in 2010:

British actor and comedian Eddie Izzard, known for playing Roman in Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen and Peter Solomon in Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol TV series but in his personal life, Eddie is comfortable with who she is.

“I wear whatever I want whenever I want. I don’t call it drag; I don’t even call it cross-dressing. It’s just wearing a dress,” Eddie declared to Interview magazine in 2014.

Eddie has since come out as gender fluid and says she’d prefer to be known by female pronouns.

Pose actor Billy Porter has loved playing with fashion stereotypes over the years.

“I used to get frustrated that women could wear whatever they wanted and men had to show up in the same penguin suit,” he says.

“My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part,” he told fashion in 2019.

“I’m not a drag queen, I’m a man in a dress,” he added.

Let’s hope one day people can just wear whatever they like and not have fashion labeled for one particular gender or the other.

Margot Robbie says she’s ‘eternally grateful’ to Neighbors for helping her break into Hollywood

Margot Robbie says she’s ‘eternally grateful’ to Neighbors for helping her break into Hollywood – and admits she only realized how popular the show was until she moved to London

She’s arguably one of the biggest stars to come out of Australian soap Neighbours.

And Margot Robbie, who played Donna Freedman between 2008 and 2011, is under no illusion that the beloved show was integral in helping her break into Hollywood.

‘There are so many of us that owe them for giving us a big break,’ Robbie, 32, told The Sun on Saturday.

‘It wasn’t just about giving me a break either — it gave me a real chance to work on my craft. It was the perfect training for Hollywood, and I will always be eternally grateful.’

Robbie, who moved to London in 2013 after leaving Neighbours, said she only realized how popular the show was until she lived in the UK.

‘When I lived in London, I understood at its peak how big it was. People would come up to me and tell me how they watched it every day after school.’

During the Neighbors finale, Robbie made a floating appearance in a 14-second pre-recorded video message.

Robbie was unable to travel to Australia to film scenes as she’s currently busy filming the Barbie movie in America.

However, she did show her gratitude by sending the entire cast a bottle of pricey Champagne.

Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan, Natalie Imbruglia and Holly Valance are among the other celebrities who returned to Neighbors to appear in the send-off of the Melbourne-based drama that helped launch their careers in acting and music.

Natalie and Holly filmed a scene together from the UK, which saw them bump into each other at a park before discovering they both once lived on Ramsay Street.

Neighbors was once a major hit in Australia and a bigger success in Britain, but has fallen victim to waning ratings in recent years.

Taylor Swift responds to private jet criticism

Taylor Swift has responded to critics after she topped a list of celebrities who have taken the most private flights.

The ‘Shake It Off’ hitmaker has been accused of damaging the environment after her jet flew 170 times between January 1 and July 19 2022.

The research gathered by Yard revealed that Taylor, 32, spent more than 22,000 minutes in the air – the equivalent of 16 days – but a representative for the star claimed she is not solely responsible for the emissions.

They told Rolling Stone: “Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her from her is blatantly incorrect. ”

The research alleges that other celebrities are guilty of damaging the planet, including the former boxer Floyd Mayweather, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg and talk show legend Oprah Winfrey.
