Wesley Fofana to Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona, Frenkie de Jong contract, Arsenal, Chelsea, record transfer, defender

Barcelona have reportedly threatened legal action over Frenkie de Jong’s contract, after the Spanish giants claimed to have found evidence of criminality on “the parties who signed” the upgraded deal.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Catalan club is hoping to either sell the Dutch star or revert the deal back to what it was before to help solve their financial woes.

De Jong has been heavily linked with a transfer to Manchester United, although Chelsea recently emerged as a potential suitor for his services.

Meanwhile, striker Timo Werner is close to finalizing his death with RB Leipzig after arriving in Germany for his medical.

The 26-year-old rose to footballing stardom during his first stint with the club, and became one of the biggest names on the transfer market before being snatched up by Chelsea two years ago.

While Chelsea may lose Werner, the Blues are heavily linked with another emerging star who they could sign on a world record fee.

Here’s all the news and gossip in the latest edition of our Rumor Mill!

BARCA THREATEN LEGAL ACTION

Barcelona’s financial woes are in dire need of a solution recruit after La Liga rejected their attempt to register new players, including star Robert Lewandowski.

Frenkie de Jong has been linked with two of the biggest clubs in England, with a transfer shaping up as a potential solution to their money drama.

But the de Jong saga at Barcelona has reached a dramatic new twist with the club reportedly threatening legal action over the stars renewed deal.

De Jong signed a two-year contract extension with the club on October 20, 2020, which kept him at the club for longer but reduced his salary in the short-term.

It’s believed the Netherlands international is owed €18 million ($26m AUD) in deferred wages, which the club is hoping to annul.

David Ornstein has reported that the deal presented by the club’s previous board involved alleged “criminality” and provides “grounds for legal action against those involved”.

Previously, Barcelona president Joan Laporta had insisted that he wants de Jong to remain at the club.

“Frenkie’s our player and we want him to stay at Barcelona, he wants to stay too,” Laporta said.

“With him and his teammates, we have a very powerful midfield. He has offers, but we want him to stay.”

RED DEVILS TO SIGN FRENCH MIDFIELDER

Manchester United had identified midfielder Fabian Ruiz as a possible alternative to de Jong and it appears the deal is progressing, as Erik ten Hag looks to complete his fourth signing.

Guardian revealed an agreement has been reached between Juventus and Manchester United for £15 million ($26 million AUD).

Rabiot has had a decorated playing career so far, having won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain on five occasions, and he’s also a Serie A winner.

WERNER TO COMPLETE MOVE

Werner had an underwhelming spell at the Blues, but is set to return to the club where he really made his name in world football.

The 26-year-old scored 90 goals and had 40 assists in his 156 games for RB Leipzig, before leaving in 2020.

CHELSEA BIG SPEND CONTINUES

Leicester defender Wesley Fofana could be wearing another navy jersey this season, as Chelsea prepare to launch a world record bid this week.

Football Londonunderstand that the Blues will attempt to sign their second center back of the English summer, after announcing Kalidou Koulibaly.

It’s believed that Fofana is pushing for a move away from the Foxes, even though coach Brendan Rodgers has insisted that he’s not for sale. According to the report, Chelsea are preparing a bid that would smash the world record for the highest fee paid for a defender — currently the 87 million euros ($A127m) Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019.

ONE OR THE OTHER

Barcelona will not sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Memphis Depay, as both players continued to be linked with transfers away from the Camp Nou.

Football insider Fabrizio Romano has said that no discussions have been held between Chelsea and Barcelona over Aubameyang, although he is on their “list”.

The former Arsenal captain could be set for a sensational return to England with London rivals Chelsea, although he’s happy in Spain.

Meanwhile, Depay is reportedly negotiating a free agency with Juventus interested in acquiring his services.

BOLOGNA MAKE IT CLEAR

Bologna director Marco di Vaio has made it quite clear that the Italian club want to retain striker Marko Arnautovic, amid rumors of an offer from Manchester United.

The Red Devils reportedly had a bid for the 33-year-old striker rejected.

“Man United on Arnautovic? We’re proud of Man United’s interest for Marko bur we are not planning to sell him,” di Vaio said.

“We want to keep him at Bologna as president said, he’s a key part of our project – there’s not even a price tag.”

Fremantle’s Spare Parts Puppet Theater cancels all upcoming shows after building deemed unsafe

The iconic Spare Parts Puppet Theater in the heart of Fremantle has been “condemned” to close, after a decision by the WA government which theater staff claim came suddenly and without warning.

Concerns had been raised about the aging heritage-listed building in Pioneer Park for several years, with the theater company even having to relocate the launch of its Shaun Tan Rules of Summer show in 2017 while work was carried out to make the theater safe.

Despite this, Artistic Director Philip Mitchell said the state’s decision to close the theater came unexpected.

“There was no warning of the closure of the theater [but] we were aware there were problems with the building,” he said.

“While the heritage building is actually quite sound, the exoskeleton that holds up the theater walls, we understand has come to the end of its life.

“We certainly don’t want to be putting our audience in danger. So the state government has condemned the theatre.”

Mr Mitchell said steps had already been taken to try and save the state-owned building, including presenting plans for a new building in 2015.

Why Perth’s premium puppet performer steals the show

“The government has been very aware of the problems with the building and we have been banging on their door for a number of years to do something about it.”

The upcoming The Secret Garden show and the remaining 2022 season at the theater have been cancelled.

Mr Mitchell said given shows were planned four years in advance, future performances were up in the air.

“We have got a whole theater load of shows ready to go with totally uncertainty about how we’re going to proceed with those new works.”

He called on WA Arts Minister David Templeman to act.

“Right now, we need just a rebuild of the theatre,” he said.

“I’m sure David [Templeman] will come to the party and be the knight in shining armor that we need him to be.”

Quest for new home for puppets

Erin Gauntlett, the acting director general at the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, said closing part of the building was an “incredibly unfortunate” but necessary decision.

“When we get structural engineers saying that it’s a risk to public safety and it’s a risk to performers, the staff and the general public – we were in the very unfortunate position of having to make that difficult decision but a very necessary decision to close that building.”

She said the department had been planning remediation works, but was told last week the repairs wouldn’t be possible.

“When it comes to the time that you’re told that it’s a risk to the safety of the public…we had no choice.”

Ms Gauntlett said the department was committed to working with the company on short- and long-term solutions and all options were on the table.

“We’ll support them through this and that will include financial assistance as well as finding alternative venues for the short term.

“No decisions have been made yet about longer-term decisions.”

WA Arts Minister David Templeman has been contacted for comment.

3 charged with helping alleged Mall of America shooters flee

Two cousins who work at a hotel near the Mall of America and one of their friends were charged with felonies Monday accusing them of helping two men escape after one of them fired three rounds inside a crowded mall store.

Denesh Raghubir, 21, of Minneapolis; Selena Raghubir, 23, of Bloomington; and Delyanie Kwen-Shawn Arnold, 23, of Burnsville, were charged with aiding an offender to avoid arrest. They were being held in the Hennepin County jail Monday evening while two suspects remain at large.

Court documents identify the shooter as Shamar Alon Lark, 21, of Minneapolis, who is shown in security videos with Rashad Jamal May, 22, of Burnsville, fleeing a fight between four other individuals that led to Lark firing several shots.

Warrants were issued for May and Lark, who faced a slew of gun charges including second-degree assault, felony discharge of a dangerous weapon and felony possession without a permit. May is charged with aiding an offender.

Lark is on probation for a shooting in September near SE. 26th and Delaware avenues. Responding officers saw Lark and another male flee the area of the shooting, and he was later apprehended while in possession of a firearm. He was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit.

At a Monday afternoon news conference, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges held up driver’s license photos of Lark and May.

“You cannot come shoot up a mall and think that you’re gonna get away with it. We’re not gonna allow that to happen,” Hodges said. “Mr. May and Mr. Lark, please turn yourselves in. Please, but understand our detectives and officers are not going to rest until they have you in custody.”

According to charging documents:

May drove Lark’s vehicle to the mall, arriving around 4 pm Thursday. It was left in the parking ramp and towed to the Bloomington Police Department, where officers searched the vehicle and found IDs for both men as well as a handgun holster in the trunk.

Three cartridges were found inside the main entrance of the Nike store after officers responded to the shooting shortly before 4:20 pm Security video shows a fight broke out before May and Lark left the store briefly. Lark returned and fired a handgun in the direction of the fight. He then ran out the north doors with May and into the IKEA parking lot where they could no longer been seen on surveillance.

The men were picked up by a Best Western hotel shuttle at IKEA and taken to the hotel just south of the mall. Officers interviewed the bus driver, Raghubir, who told police he dropped them off and last saw them smoking outside the hotel.

Officers obtained a search warrant for May’s phone which showed that two minutes after the shooting, he called Arnold, who in return called May five times between 4:20 and 4:23 pm

Arnold then called his girlfriend, Selena Raghubir, an assistant manager at the hotel who is a cousin of the shuttle bus driver. The couple exchanged calls with May around 4:30 pm

Ten minutes later, the bus driver is shown on surveillance picking up Lark and May at IKEA and dropping them off at the back side of the hotel, where a vehicle registered to Selena Raghubir followed.

Hotel management said that Denesh Raghubir is not the regular shuttle bus driver. He has admitted to police that his cousin was friends with May and Lark and he recognized them.

“When he dropped the two off at Best Western, Selena Raghubir immediately left the front desk and he did not see her for about 45 minutes. He stated that Selena Raghubir later called him and asked what time the police left,” according to court documents .

Phone records later show May and Arnold at Arnold’s Bristol Village address in Bloomington.

The day after the shooting, police executed a search warrant at the Bloomington residence where Arnold lives with Selena Raghubir. Inside her vehicle police found an orange T-shirt May wore and white tank top Lark wore at the time of the shooting.

Police say that the assistance and misinformation provided by Arnold and the Raghubirs “resulted in the flight of Lark and May and the interference in the investigation.”

The three remain in custody and make their first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

Hodges said that because police believed Lark and May were in the hotel, it was locked down and searched, wasting valuable investigative time.

“We were there for a long time when we could have been looking for them,” he said.

Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse praised police in a tweet for their “continued outstanding work” and called the suspects “cowards who fired shots into a crowded store at MOA.”

“People with no respect for others, and anyone who helps them, will be held accountable,” Busse wrote.

Meanwhile, business was returning to normal at the Mall of America.

Logan Rieger, 28, an assistant manager at the Under Armor store, who was near the shooting, said that there were onlookers Monday checking out the scene, but there were also quite a few who didn’t know anything had gone on.

About 75 people ended up crowding in his store when the shots rang out last week, he said. Some huddled behind anything they could hide. Rieger took the next day off work to “reset.” When he returned over the weekend, he said that there was a “noticeable increase” in security.

Kmart’s bestseller $20 knit mules return to stores after selling out

After selling out across the country last year, Kmart has brought back a very popular item.

The budget retailer caused a frenzy over its $20 “Casual Knit Square Toe Mules” when shoppers began raving about how “comfy” the affordable heels were.

One influencer even shared a TikTok video telling people they “need to go buy a pair right now” – predicting the shoes would “quickly sell out”.

Her warning was right and the heels became a fast favourite, with stock disappearing from Kmart shelves in October.

But now shoppers have spotted the item is once again available, with Kmart Australia revealing “more stock has just dropped into stores”.

“Customers have been loving our casual knit square toe mule that is incredible value, priced at $20,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“It’s the perfect addition to any outfit. The mule comes in a variety of colors including black, charcoal and natural, and the super-comfy slip on style can be styled up or down an outfit.”

TikTok user Olivia Burrows alerted shoppers to the fact the slide-on-shoes had returned in a recent video titled “premium Kmart haul”.

Putting together a black knit skirt and red blouse with the chunky heels, one social media user was quick to point out: “OMG the mules are back.”

Last year, fashion blogger @curvysam told followers they “need to go buy a pair right now” in a TikTok video that has been viewed almost 40,000 times.

Another affordable fashion influencer @kmartfever said she “can’t get enough of these mules” as they “seriously make every single outfit look better”.

The styling blogger purchased them in both black and the natural colour, which she said “go with everything”.

Shoppers quickly gave the mules the tick of approval, with many saying they had already purchased multiple colors and were “obsessed”.

“Just had to buy all colors,” one customer joked.

“Who is the buyer for Kmart? They deserve an award for saving us all,” another agreed.

“Already have two pairs! They are so good,” one person wrote.

“I’ve got them and they’re amazing,” another commented. “They don’t make that cheap sound when you walk… they’re silent.”

For winter 2022, the mules now also come in khaki green colour.

Microsoft’s Azure named official cloud partner of the Unity game engine

Unity X Microsoft

Microsoft and Unity

Microsoft and Unity announced that Microsoft’s Azure had been named the official cloud partner of the Unity game engine.

Game engines like Unity allow for the game and digital experience creators to design and realize 3D environments and assets for games, training tools, and other digital experiences. The Unity engine itself has powered a slew of popular games since its launch in 2005, with some notable recent releases including Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and shining Pearl, Fall Guys, Genshin Impactand many others.

Also: How Microsoft and Samsung may finally take cloud gaming mainstream

Now, Unity is hoping to leverage this new, official partnership with Microsoft’s Azure to expand into non-gaming spaces as well. The company hinted at new plans to turn the Unity engine into a “platform-agnostic, cloud-native solution that meets the wide-ranging needs of all developers from enterprise through citizen creators.” It plans to do this by leveraging Azure’s cloud-based systems to provide the real-time 3D (RT3D) simulation tools needed to develop digital twins of real-world places and objects for a variety of training and simulation applications.

The duo believes real-time 3D simulation will become “central to every industry ranging from e-commerce to energy, manufacturing to medical and more.”

Also: Microsoft to allow Xbox Cloud Gaming users to bring their own games later this year

Developers creating games and non-gaming experiences within the Unity engine will now also be able to deploy their creations more quickly and easily to Windows and Xbox devices. Unity and Microsoft plan to make this possible by “leveraging the latest platform innovation from silicon to cloud, and simplifying the publishing experience.”

No timeframe was mentioned for when the first collaborative publishing tools or services might be available.

‘Trade me or fire them’: Kevin Durant’s bombshell Brooklyn Nets demand, Kyrie Irving

NBA megastar Kevin Durant has reportedly given Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai a bombshell ultimatum, demanding coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks are fired — or he is traded.

Durant requested a trade in June but any move will require a massive package in return, none of which have eventuated, The New York Post reported.

Stream Over 50 Sports Live & On-Demand with Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The Athletic reported Durant had a face-to-face meeting with Nets owner Joe Tsai in London over the weekend in which he issued an ultimatum: Trade me or fire them.

According to the report, the Nets have “direct knowledge” concerning why the 12-time All-Star has asked to be moved on a year after he signed a four-year, $198 million extension. Also according to the report, Durant “does not have faith” in the direction of the team.

A source close to the Nets organization indicated Durant is not the only Nets star unhappy with the team’s leadership.

“Kyrie Irving hates these guys,” the source said. “He feels that Nash is terrible and Marks is bad.”

“KD came to the same conclusion,” the source added.

The two-time NBA champion and 2014 MVP’s discontent reportedly stems from the fact the Nets were swept by Boston in the playoffs, after struggling to a 44-38 record last year, despite having the likes of Durant and Irving, while James Harden also played on the side for most of the year.

But the demands have fallen on deaf ears as Tsai tweeted on Tuesday: “Our front office and coaching staff have my support. We will make decisions in the best interest of the Brooklyn Nets.”

Nash, a 48-year-old Canadian and two-time NBA MVP as a guard, got his first coaching job with the Nets in 2020 and has gone 92-62 in two seasons guiding Brooklyn.

Marks, 46, was the first player from New Zealand in the NBA and won two league titles, one as a forward with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005 and the other as an assistant coach with the Spurs in 2014.

He spent most of the next two seasons as the Spurs’ assistant general manager before being hired to oversee the rebuilding Nets.

The Nets have yet to find a trade offer that would prompt them to deal Durant, and according to the report, Tsai and the Nets have made it known they would take “every last asset from a team that trades for Durant.”

In stating the lofty hope for the trade return, perhaps the Nets believe Durant would be less motivated to leave and more likely to report to September’s training camp.

But as the ultimatum becomes publicly known, it is difficult to imagine an avenue toward Durant playing again with the Nets or showing up to pre-season action with a team put together by Marks and coached by Nash — unless Tsai chooses the player over the organization’s leaders.

The Nets are seeking a young All-Star and a collection of draft picks for Durant, but finding equal value for a 33-year-old prodigious talent signed through 2025-26 is challenging.

COVID in WA: Hospitals wind back COVID-19 screening to free up staff as State passes peak

West Australian hospitals will scale back their COVID-19 screening protocols in a bid to free up staff and allow more visitors.

Public hospitals will shift from “red alert” to a new blue alert level from August 15, bringing an end to several months of heightened precautions.

Patients presenting at emergency departments will only be required to undergo rapid antigen tests upon arrival if they are symptomatic.

The testing requirement will also be removed for asymptomatic visitors unless they are visiting a high-risk area or vulnerable patients.

Visitors must still show proof of vaccination but staff will conduct spot checks rather than mass inspections.

The medical system is on its knees at the moment … our system does not have enough beds to allow this to go up much more,

Healthcare workers who had been required to wear N95-style masks across all clinical areas will now only need to do so when caring for vulnerable patients or working in high-risk areas. Surgical masks must be worn elsewhere.

The changes come as hospitals continue to struggle with getting patients through emergency departments and into beds.

Ambulances spent a record 6982 hours ramped outside hospitals in July.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson says the changes will help ensure effective patient flow and free up frontline health staff.

“This is a measured approach to scaling back the COVID response in hospitals, which has been endorsed by the chief health officer, and expert infection control teams from the WA health system,” Ms Sanderson said on Tuesday.

“In a time when WA has passed its most recent peak of COVID-19, it makes sense to take practical, reasonable measures to free up some burdens, and support healthcare workers and families supporting their loved ones in hospital.”

WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson (file image)
Camera IconAmber-Jade Sanderson says the COVID screening changes will free up frontline health staff. Credit: AAP

A limit of two visitors per patient will remain but may be extended by staff under certain circumstances.

Visiting hours will be extended at every hospital and essential visitors will be allowed to visit outside the standard hours.

WA Health on Tuesday reported 2,965 new COVID-19 cases. There were 358 people in hospital including 11 in intensive care.

Australian Medical Association WA president Mark Duncan-Smith last month warned changing the screening protocols would make it easier for the virus to spread in hospitals.

“The medical system is on its knees at the moment … our system does not have enough beds to allow this to go up much more,” he said.

ABS: Monthly household spending indicator reveals 10 per cent more spending

Household spending in June was up more than 10 per cent compared with the same time last year, as Australia struggles through skyrocketing cost of living.

The latest monthly spending figures, released on Tuesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, show household spending increased 10.2 per cent through the year, with a 15.9 per cent increase on services and a 5.0 per cent increase on goods.

Both discretionary and non-discretionary spending increased – not surprising given the rate of inflation is 6.1 per cent.

Discretionary spending rose by 10.8 per cent, driven by spending in recreation and cultural activities, while non-discretionary spending on essentials rose 9.8 per cent, due to the rising cost of transport.

The most significant area of spending was on transport, up 22.7 per cent, driven by higher oil prices due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the demand for air travel.

Spending at hospitality businesses like hotels, cafes and restaurants was up 17.1 per cent in what is viewed as a positive return to pre-pandemic levels.

There was also strong growth in spending on clothing and footwear – up 16.3 per cent; as well as a 15.5 per cent increase in recreation and culture.

Jacqui Vitas, from the Australia Bureau of Statistics, said June marked the 16th consecutive month of through-the-year increases in total household spending.

“This was off the back of consistent decreases in total household spending from March 2020 to February 2021, as responses to Covid-19 were experienced across the country,” she said.

“Spending categories most impacted from Covid-19 responses – transport, hotels, cafes and restaurants, and clothing and footwear – have now returned to pre-pandemic levels.”

Queensland and Victoria recorded the highest state-based increases in spending through the year, spending 12.4 per cent and 11.8 per cent respectively more.
