The Block judge Shaynna Blaze leaves contestant Sharon in tears

The Block judge Shaynna Blaze didn’t mince words when it came time to judge the first bathroom of the season, delivering some tough feedback to this year’s least-experienced team.

In short: Stop ruining this grand old country house, or you’ll have her to contend with.

Blaze and fellow judges Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker went for their second walk-through of the five country properties on The Block: Tree Change during Sunday’s episode, and for the most part, their critics were positive.

Then it came time to visit accountant Ankur and lawyer-turned-actress Sharon’s bathroom. After some tough critiques in the first challenge, Sharon was confident she’d done a lot better this time around.

“I think I nailed the brief of luxe, sexy, but heritage,” she said.

“There are absolute nods to heritage all the way through… I hope they take away the energy, that feeling of luxury and country warmth that I think the buyer will want.”

They did not.

“Last week, Ankur and Sharon took us to the winery – this week, I’m not sure where they’ve taken us,” said Whitaker as the trio entered the bathroom.

“Well it ain’t this beautiful Victorian house, that’s for sure,” said Blaze, pointing out the details that most disappointed her: “Just because you’ve put that type of tap, and that type of bath, does not make it heritage at all. If any house could get me angry, it’s doing Este to that beautiful house we’ve walked through,” she said.

Blaze even asked the other two judges to start their critiques and come back to her, as the sight of the bathroom had put her “on the back foot”.

Whitaker was similarly disappointed, complaining the bathroom felt like a “pastiche” and didn’t feel “authentic”.

There was some positive feedback from Palmer though, who said he liked the room but still pointed out a few issues – tiling and an unnecessary internal wall – two things that would be very hard to change.

Blaze then continued her critique, announcing: “Honestly, it’s not a bathroom I’m feeling good in.”

She said it was especially tough to swallow, given Sharon and Ankur had chosen her favorite of the Victorian houses on offer this season.

“This is the grand dame, the jewel in the crown. Are you going to treat her like this? Because if you’re going to treat her like this, you’re going to have to deal with me,” she said.
As expected after that tough critique, Sharon and Ankur came dead last for bathroom week with a score of 20.5. (Friends Omar and Oz were the surprise winners with a score of 26, a big improvement on their negative feedback from the first challenge.)

Sharon was deflated after the judges’ scores rolled in, crying on camera as her husband comforted her.

“It just feels like I got it completely wrong, again. The choices that got caned today – they were mine,” she said.

“I’m over it and it’s week one, basically. I’m over it, and I’m so tired, and… maybe I don’t have a clue.”

BOM warns wet spring and summer could see more Queensland floods

Queenslanders are being warned to expect spring and summer conditions similar to the La Niña event that brought widespread flooding to parts of the state in February.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) today briefed cabinet on the seasonal conditions ahead.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was likely the state would see a mild bushfire season but above average rainfall was set to continue.

“The good news is we’re not expecting a big bushfire season, but we are expecting a wetter than normal spring,” she said.

“These conditions could be similar to the conditions over the summer of this year.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the government would ensure councils across the state were prepared for more wet weather and were implementing recommendations from the last flooding event.

‘Remove a bit of flooding’ expected

BOM meteorologist Laura Boekel said the outlook applied to the whole state, and could not be pinpointed more specifically.

“All of Queensland should be aware that we are expecting an increased chance of above average rainfall this season,” she said.

“If we couple what we have seen in the winter, which is a lot more moisture and grounds remaining wet and not drying up, with the forecast of an above average season, that means we could see quite a bit of flooding across Queensland.

“All of Queensland should be across the fact that we are expecting to see quite a bit of rainfall.”

‘Significant grass fire activity’

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Greg Leach said while the bushfire season is expected to be normal, those in regional parts of the state need to be prepared for grassfire.

“Our modeling still shows that we’re likely to experience a normal bushfire season,” he said.

“While we’re unlikely to see the extensive bushfires such as we saw in 2018/19, we are going to see significant grassfire activity in some parts of the state.

“The recent rain we’ve had has brought on a significant amount of grass load growth through western, central and southern parts of Queensland, and the frosts that we’ve seen in recent weeks has dried off much of that vegetation.”

He said rural brigades had mobilized to complete 133 hazard reduction burns totaling nearly 60,000 hectares.

Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan urged those in regional Queensland to be prepared for grassfires.

“For people in the north, and central and west, there is still a significant chance for you to experience grassfire… you need to be prepared for that season.”

Flood cameras and sirens to be installed across Ipswich

Ipswich City Council Mayor Teresa Harding said her council was conducting its own flood review which will begin at the end of this month.

“It’s obviously quite emotional to hear of this [outlook],” she said.

McDonalds fan shares hack to get ‘Big Macs for half price’

Everyone loves a money-saving hack, and even more so if it involves popular McDonald’s fast-food joint.

One Macca’s fan in the US has shared a trick he uses to save a few dollars when ordering a Big Mac – and it’s one you could even replicate in Australia.

“What McDonald’s workers don’t want you to know,” Tiktoker Mark, who shares money saving tips on his account @financeunfoldedwrote in the clip, which you can watch above.

He went on to share his hack for “always getting Big Macs for half off”, revealing he instead orders a McDouble – it costs about $US2.79.

When you order, Mark said to remove the ketchup and mustard, and add lettuce for $0.30. He then orders a serving of Big Mac sauce on the side, but he said to ask for this after you’ve ordered in the hopes they do n’t charge you for the extra sauce.

Though even if they do, his final burger cost just $US3.09 (or US$3.59 with extra sauce), which is cheaper than the usual $US5.93 on average for a Big Mac in the US.

“This is almost half the price of a normal Big Mac and you get literally the same ingredients,” Mark added.

In Australia, a Big Mac currently costs around $7.10, according to the MyMacca’s app, though prices can vary.

You might also be thinking, ‘but we don’t have McDoubles in Australia’. But you can try the same method using a double cheeseburger instead. The only difference is an extra slice of cheese. You should still save around $0.60.

The video has received over 7,000 likes with plenty of people loving the burger trick.

One person even added an extra tip, commenting: “If you use the word ‘substitute’ you don’t have to pay for the [extra] willow.”

Though others weren’t convinced saying the substitute was still missing some key Big Mac elements.

“You’re also missing the middle bun and the sesame seeds,” one person pointed out.

“Except the type of burger they use is different,” another said.

REVIEW: He might be their sister Grace’s (Anne-Marie Duff) husband, but none of the other four Garvey sisters are grieving the death of John Paul Williams (Netflix’s Dracula Claes Bang).

As Apple TV+’s new black comedy Bad Sisters (which begins streaming on August 19) opens, the quartet all dutifully turn up at his open casket wake and funeral, but only to support their sibling.

“He’s Satan’s problem now,” one remarks, while another notes that she’s dressed him in her pajamas, no doubt to “make eternal damnation more comfortable for him”.

In flashbacks, we learn how he’d undermine and appal each of them with his inappropriate comments, obnoxious observations and failure to flush the loo, as well as increasingly control Grace’s every move. “She getting quieter and smaller in the hands of that prick – he’s sucking the life out of her,” self-appointed Garvey matriarch Eva (Sharon Horgan) opines.

Orphaned for some time, the quintet had made a vow to look after each other, but prior to John Paul’s death, Grace just wanted them to back off.

“I know he isn’t easy and I know you don’t think he’s a good man, but he’s a good husband and a good father, and he makes me happy. Can you not just let me be happy?

APPLE-TV

Bad Sisters begins streaming on Apple TV+ on August 19.

Six months on though and her only concern now is whether she’s made enough sandwiches to appropriately cater for the wake. (“No one RSVPs for a funeral, so how do you know?”)

However, as if the sniping comments from Eva, eye-patched Bibi (Sarah Greene), disapproving Ursula (Eva Birthistle) and massage therapist Becka (Eve Hewson) weren’t enough, an interlocutor has started asking awkward questions. Despite his insistence that he’s making “a courtesy visit to a valued client at a difficult time”, Thomas Claffin (Brian Gleeson) is determined to uncover an insurance fraud.

Shocked at just how much life insurance was recently taken out against John Paul, he just has “a couple of questions” before they can pay out, a situation he tells his half-brother Matthew (Daryl McCormack) he is very keen to avoid, lest it destabilize their business’ own financial position. “Who knows if there is foul play?” he admits, “but if there is, the culprit usually shows up at the funeral.”

Former The Affair star Claes Bang delivers another of his charismatically odious males in the form of Bad Sisters’ John Paul Williams.

Based on the 2012 Belgian series Clan (also known in some countries as The Out-Laws), this 10-parter has made a successful transition to contemporary Ireland. With a tone and style reminiscent of John Michael McDonagh’s magnificent The Guard, Motherland, Shining Vale and Catastrophe writer Horgan’s script makes terrific use of its Emerald Isle backdrop and the truly impressive assembled ensemble.

Perhaps all best known more as dramatic actors – Duff was in Shameless, Greene has featured in Penny Dreadful and Normal People, Birthistle is known for her period drama work and Hewson’s CV includes our own The Luminaries – they all here demonstrate some terrific comedic timing, both separately and as a sometimes hilarious, nonsense, bickering group.

And while Bang delivers another of his charismatically odious males (John Paul is like a British version of The Affair’s self-obsessed Sasha Mann), he’s upstaged by Gleeson’s (brother of Domhnall, son of Brendan) acerbic insurance broker. Whether it’s playfully teasing his pregnant wife about “causing structural damage to the house” if she moves, or ransacking the wake sandwiches on his way out the door, he’s a scene-stealer extraordinaire, in a darkly humorous show that offers just as much intrigue as it does witty one-liners.

POLL: Do you want a Supercars retro round return?

The retro liveries of 2019

In this week’s Pirtek Poll, we want to know whether you would like to see the Supercars retro round revived.

The championship launched its Sandown retro round concept in 2016, encouraging teams to celebrate the category’s history by recreating classic liveries and attire from the period.

However, the fan favorite throwback theme has had a run of absence, last seen in 2019.

Speedcafe.com understands Supercars management is keen to re-introduce the concept in the future.

While its absenteeism during the seasons impacted by COVID-19 is understandable, retro round has again fallen by the wayside this year.

A factor in that is Sandown’s place on the calendar was only secured in June after uncertainty lingered over the event amid talk of reducing the calendar to 12 rounds.

Furthermore, the championship had already committed to a themed event in its inaugural indigenous round at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway.

Held in June, the Merlin Darwin Triple Crown put a greater emphasis on indigenous culture with theme-specific liveries made mandatory.

Retro round has typically been well supported by Supercars teams, giving the event a point of difference that links in with the circuit’s history.

Teams have changed up the color scheme on their cars, with some also producing one-off merchandise to match the livery.

At its most recent incarnation in 2019, almost the entire grid fielded a recognizable ‘retro’ livery; Tickford Racing celebrated Allan Moffat’s 1969 Mustang (with the car appropriately co-driven by James Moffat), and Tekno switched to the white, green, and blue of Bob Morris’ Torana from 1979.

At Team 18 there was a retro NASCAR-themed design, while Brad Jones Racing recreated its OzEmail Racing look from the early 2000s.

According to Speedcafe.com’s readers at the time, the pick of the bunch however was Walkinshaw Andretti United’s recreation of the 1999 Holden Racing Team look, which picked up almost 40 percent of a Pirtek Poll for the best retro design that year.

Supercars, and the Australian Touring Car Championship, have a long and decorated history and it was somehow appropriate that, once a year it was celebrated in a practical and visible sense.

Running retro liveries is not a simple process and requires the support of team sponsors, which can dictate if a project goes ahead.

The cost of a one-off livery is thought to range between $10,000 and $30,000 depending on the circumstance, but have resulted in some iconic looks gracing one of our most historic venues once again.

Ironically, history has also proven that the concept is a huge hit with fans and so with that, Speedcafe.com wants to know if you would like to see the Supercars retro round revived.

NRL player Manase Fainu taken into custody after being found guilty of stabbing

On Monday, Judge Nanette Williams granted a detention application by crown prosecutors, rejecting a bid by Fainu to remain out on bail until a sentence hearing on October 7.

Defense barrister Margaret Cunneen SC argued that the 24-year-old should temporarily retain his freedom for reasons including the mental health impacts of the trial, his desire to financially support his family and the significant media attention of the case.

Manase Fainu has been taken into custody after being found guilty of a stabbing. (APA)

However, the judge found these did not amount to circumstances that were special or exceptional enough to prevent incarceration in a situation where jail time was all but confirmed.

“I’m not satisfied that special or exceptional circumstances exist to refuse or dismiss the detention application,” Judge Williams said.

Last week, the eleven rising NRL star was found guilty of stabbing church youth leader Faamanu Levi in a brawl outside a dance in Wattle Grove, Sydney late at night on October 25, 2019.

He pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in the attack, but the jury took just two hours to deliver its guilty verdict.

In arguing for Fainu’s release, Ms Cunneen told the court her client had experienced severe mental illness including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts because of the trial and verdict.

She said he had been considered a highly promising rugby league player who was on track to earn a massive salary to support his parents and eight siblings.

Manase Fainu has been taken into custody. (APA)

Thanks to the National Rugby League’s no fault stand down policy, this was all stripped away once he was charged and arrested, the court heard.

“This is a man who has suffered a most enormous downfall, an unthinkable downfall in what he may have expected in 2019,” Ms Cunneen said.

“This is a case of a young man whose life changed forever over a spontaneous, foolish, terrible thing that happened without premeditation.”

Fainu’s counselor Jan Earl of Elite Athlete Wellbeing Services spoke of the footballer’s decline in mental health after losing not only his spot on the Manly team but also his role as family breadwinner.

Earl pointed to the no fault stand down policy as being partially responsible for this.

“You are shunned like a black cat. There is no money, there is no assistance and this caused great distress to Manese and his family,” she said.

Cunneen argued that the significant media attention to the case had prevented her client from seeking psychiatric help in public settings where he could be recognized.

“It’s not fun we would submit. It’s horrible. He’s not a showy, flashy man. He’s a humble man… And it’s made it immeasurably harder.”

The court also heard that Fainu had not once breached the onerous bail conditions placed on him, including a curfew and limitations on who he could go outside with.

He felt great shame and remorse over what had occurred and required time to work as a laborer to financially support his family and help pay his legal bills, the judge was told.

In granting the detention application, Judge Williams found Fainu had been reluctant to seek psychiatric help or stick to the prescribed medication. She also found he could still get this assistance while in prison.

The judge also found Fainu had plenty of time to prepare mentally and financially since being charged in 2019.

Notorious Greek restaurant with reputation for ripping off customers cops huge fine

An infamous restaurant notorious for ripping off and intimidating its customers on a popular tourist island in Greece has been found tens of thousands of dollars.

DK Oyster bar in Mykonos has been forced to cough up $44,740 after being found to be in violation of several codes.

The country’s Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias instructed the Cyclades Regional Tourism Agency to conduct a thorough investigation of the restaurant after an incident involving American tourists who were charged a staggering $866 for two drinks and a portion of crab legs.

During the probe, the agency found the eatery had breached several codes, for which it was slapped with the fine.

It came after Brenda Moulton and her daughter Kaylea hit DK Oyster with a lawsuit after being strong-armed into paying the astronomical tab.

The pair were on holiday and enjoying the idyllic Platys Gialos beach when they were given the scare of their lives.

On refusing to pay the bill, they were surrounded by three waiters and the manager and told they would not be allowed to return to the US.

“I told them that two mojitos and two crab legs cannot make 600 euros. I will not pay you,” Brenda said.

The manager then allegedly threatened them: ”I will call the police. They will keep you here and you will not return to your homeland. We can easily find where you live.”
