Perth Airport power outage: Flight chaos as passengers thrown into disarray

Perth Airport is in chaos after desperately trying to recover from a total blackout because of the severe storms crossing the State.

Flights were up and running but there was a huge backlog with passengers attempting to get through security.

Hundreds of people in high-vis were at Terminal 2 as regional flights were taking off. The line to get through to security was almost out the door as people raced to make their flight on time.

Terminal 1 was less chaotic, almost a ghost town in comparison, as several flights were still cancelled.

An airport spokeswoman said the terminals were “fully operational” as of 10pm last night but the flow-on effects of the impact could still be felt.

Perth Airport has announced a thorough review of its backup power systems in light of the power disruption.

SK hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion Modules Launched with 96GB of DDR5

SK Hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion EDSFF Expanded
SK Hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion EDSFF Expanded

SK hynix is joining Samsung and Micron by announcing CXL memory expansion. The SK hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion modules bring RAM to EDSFF for next-generation servers. This will be a big deal as DDR5 moves to PCIe Gen5 channels.

SK hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion Modules Launched

SK hynix showed the “current composition of local DDR5”. What is fun about this is that the company is showing 96GB DDR5 DIMMs. Current DDR4 capacities are 64GB and 128GB, so that is one change being shown in this image. The other is that we get 260-320GB/s of memory bandwidth on 30-40GB/s per channel. The capacity and bandwidth align with 8-channel memory, so this seems to assume an Intel Sapphire Rapids Xeon, not a full 12-channel Genoa system.

SK Hynix DDR5 Without CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion
SK Hynix DDR5 Without CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion

SK hynix is showing EDSFF modules and saying that each can increase both the total amount of bandwidth and the total capacity with 96GB CXL 2.0 memory modules.

SK Hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion With DDR5
SK Hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion With DDR5

CXL 2.0 is also where we see single level CXL switching come into play, so these are important products. You can learn more about CXL in Compute Express Link or CXL What it is and Examples plus the taco primer:

If you want to learn more about the EDSFF E3.S form factor that SK hynix is using, we have a primer on EDSFF as well:

The new CXL memory modules are clearly being designed for the next generation (or two) of servers.

End Words

While the company is showing 96GB modules at this point, given that Samsung Launched a 512GB CXL Memory Module we expect the line to have different capacity points.

SK Hynix CXL 2.0 Memory Expansion Closed

Still, adding memory into the same EDSFF slots that will hold SSDs in the future is going to be one of the biggest changes coming to servers. Vendors will still offer legacy 2.5″ servers, but many are going to want to EDSFF systems just to have the flexibility to add this type of memory expansion solution rather than just SSDs into slots. CXL will change servers forever, especially as we move to the CXL 3.0 generation.

Housing experts warn renters will be left in the cold after rate rises

Two property academics have warned that Australian renters could be forced out of their homes if more is not done to help improve housing affordability.
Rising interest rates and the climbing cost-of-living has the housing experts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology concerned that without government intervention, more renters will end up homeless.

“The plight of renters looks set to worsen as the knock-on effects of rising interest rates filter through to renters and combine with cost-of-living pressures,” Senior Research Fellow Dr Megan Nethercote said.

The academics are worried renters will have to move out of their home. (Supplied / Domain)

“With almost half of renters on rental assistance already in rental stress, the risk of some renters falling into homelessness is real and high.”

She said rising costs would likely mean some renters would lose their homes as landlords sold the properties.

Research Fellow Dr. Louise Dorignon added that rent prices being increased could force others, particularly those in private rentals, out of their homes.

The experts have pushed for stronger national leadership on how rental properties are built and operated.

“Renters deserve homes that are affordable, provide adequate security of tenure, are well-maintained and have appropriate provisions for tenant representation,” Dr Nethercote said.

She said meeting the needs of renters warranted “serious deliberation within a new national housing agenda.”

Rent prices are set to increase as landlords pass on their rising costs. (9News)

Dr Nethercote said purpose-built rental accommodation could help the situation by increasing the number of rentals, while Dr Dorignon has suggested that rental properties need to be constructed better to help renters keep their costs down.

“It is also often the same households who lack the funds to thermally improve their homes to reduce their electricity and gas bills,” she said.

“Better designing and building homes so they are affordable, durable, and energy-efficient could help alleviating the risk of rental affordability stress in the future.”

“The apartment stock does not provide sufficient quality to meet the needs of current and future households.

“We need to transition to alternative and innovative modes of housing production, such as using less carbon-intensive materials, which would create more liveable apartment homes and in the long term, more affordable ones for households.”

Parents of a 6-year-old Sandy Hook victim say Alex Jones has made life a ‘living hell’

Often speaking directly to InfoWars host Alex Jones, the mother of a 6-year-old killed in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School testified Tuesday that the right-wing conspiracy theorist’s lies that the attack was a hoax have left her in fear for her life and compounded her grief.

“Having a 6-year-old son shot in front of his classroom is unbearable and you don’t think you’re going to survive and then to have someone on top of that perpetuate a lie that it was a hoax, that it was a false flag,” Scarlett Lewis said during her testimony. “I don’t think you understand the fear you perpetuate, not just to the victim’s family but to our family, our friends and any survivor from that school.”

Jesse Lewis, along with 19 of his first-grade classmates and six educators, was killed after a gunman entered their Newtown, Connecticut, school on December 14, 2012.

Lewis and Jesse’s father, Neil Heslin, are among several Sandy Hook families who have filed lawsuits against Jones arguing that his statements that the attack was a hoax have led to years of abuse from his followers. The parents, both of whom testified Tuesday, have asked that Jones pay $150 million for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“The ripple effect is enormous because of the platform that you have. And the fear that comes from that stops the healing and the mourning process, ”Lewis said to Jones during her testimony from her.

Lewis testified that she received death threats and that her family and friends have also been harassed by Jones’ followers.

Lewis described an incident where an individual drove into her driveway in Connecticut began one Christmas morning and taking pictures of her and her home. She said she has not felt safe and has had to keep a gun at her home de ella for the sake of her surviving son de ella.

“I’m a single mother and responsible for the safety of both of my boys and I was not able to keep one safe so I’m going to keep my surviving son safe,” Lewis said in an emotional testimony.

Jones, who has portrayed the lawsuit as an attack on his First Amendment rights, also took the stand Tuesday and told Lewis and Heslin that he “never intentionally tried to hurt you.”

Later in his testimony, however, he said that his views about Sandy Hook came from signs he saw that it was a “synthetic” event, manipulated by outside forces.

Image: Alex Jones
Alex Jones testifies in court at the Travis County Courthouse in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 2, 2022.KXAN

He also blamed the “corporate media” several times during his testimony, saying that they lie and misrepresent truths, leading him to question everything reported.

Heslin, Jesse’s father, told jurors that the pain of losing his son was compounded by Jones’ assertion that he never existed.

“It’s very important for me to have this trial and the testimony today to hold Alex Jones accountable,” he said.” Statements by both Infowars and Alex Jones have repeatedly tarnished Jesse.”

The crux of the trial is a 2017 episode of “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly,” on which Heslin appeared and challenged Jones’s denial of the shooting. Heslin says in the episode: “I held my son with a bullet hole through his head.”

Jones and another Infowars host, Owen Shroyer, later implied that Heslin had lied.

“I can’t even describe the last nine and half years of living hell that I and others have had to endure because of the negligence and recklessness of Alex Jones.”

Judges in Texas and Connecticut have already issued default judgments against Jones, which found him liable for defamation for pushing the Sandy Hook hoax claim. Jones’ trial did not proceed because he failed to respond to court orders and turn over documents.

This trial began last week and is being held in Austin, where Jones’ Infowars website and its parent company are based.

“My goal is to hold Alex Jones accountable and to be able to walk out of this courthouse very soon with this all behind me and move on with my life.”

Jones was absent from court during Heslin’s testimony, while he went live on his show and mocked Heslin calling him “slow” and “on the spectrum.” He said the father was “being manipulated by some very bad people.”

Attorneys for Lewis and Heslin had a recording of Jones’s Tuesday morning comments admitted as evidence and played for the jury.

Jones will continue his testimony on Wednesday. Outside the ears of the jury, Jones was admonished by Judge Maya Guerra Gamble for violating orders specifying that he was not allowed to talk about his finances and for offering answers that strayed too far from the questions asked.

“When you come back to testify tomorrow, one more time, no asides,” the judge said. “Answer only the question asked of you.”

YouTube, Facebook and Twitter have all removed InfoWars and Jones from their platforms.

Facebook pages belonging to Jones or InfoWars had a combined total of more than 2.5 million followers, and Jones’ YouTube account had 2.4 million subscribers when the accounts were removed in 2018.

Jones had around 900,000 followers on Twitter and InfoWars had about 430,000 when those were removed, also in 2018.

Deloitte reveals minimum pay rates (and managers start at $125,000)

“That is why we have been providing more information as part of our annual results reporting and why we have been more transparent with our people at year-end about pay bands and where they sit in relation to their peers.”

“In our experience transparency also helps drive more equitable outcomes and is an important factor in addressing challenges like gender pay equity.”

The disclosure of the pay rates at two divisions follows PwC, Accenture and KPMG providing their pay rates to The Australian Financial Review. Accenture provided rates for its consultants, while PwC and KPMG provided rates for the major divisions at the firm.

EY has declined to provide any pay data but has made limited pay disclosures to staff about pay rates confined to their specific geography and business.

These advisory firms are all battling each other, and clients, to hire the same type of staff amid a global skills shortage.

Deloitte had developed its pay and benefits package based on regular market research, Mr Powick said.

“We regularly monitor market pay information through the year and conduct a formal annual review of a number of diverse benchmarking data sets to ensure that our salaries remain competitive with the market,” he said.

“We also benchmark other benefit areas such as leave, flexibility and training with the view of being a market leader in these domains.”

Deloitte’s lead human capital partner, Pip Dexter, said the firm wanted to support staff on their “career journey”.

“For us this includes financial reward, access to funded training and development, opportunities for accelerated career progression, market-leading leave and flexibility options, and support during different life stages,” Ms Dexter said.

“In FY22 we also made a decision to share above-plan profits with our people and that is an additional component of our total reward package that we intend to continue.”

The staff pay rates between the four firms are difficult to directly compare, and vary by typical experience.

In consulting, the minimum pay for a Deloitte senior consultant of $100,000 is on par with an Accenture team lead/consultant. The minimum pay for a Deloitte director of $190,000 is above PwC (from $184,800) and below KPMG (from $200,000).

Experts agree that pay transparency helps close the gender pay gap and have called on advisory firms, along with private sector companies, to reveal details about staff pay.

Deloitte’s overall gender pay gap was 12.6 per cent at the end of last year. The gap differed by division, with a 2.2 per cent gap in assurance and advisory and a 15.9 per cent gap in consulting.

The firm is working to close this gap via a range of policies including providing secondary carer’s leave and ensuring there are “gender-balanced” shortlists at each stage of the recruitment process.

F45 Training: Why I left F45 Training after five years to join Airlocker Training | Opinion

Last week, co-founder of F45 Training Rob Deutsch said there are “enormous issues” plaguing the gym franchise, after the company’s share price dropped over 60 per cent.

At first thought, I could have been forgiven for feeling like I ‘just got out of there in time’.

But in truth, after officially breaking up with F45 after nearly five years as a foundation member of my local studio just last month, I feel more sadness for a brand I still massively love and support.

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this,” Deutsch wrote in a since-deleted post on Instagram in response to the apparent downfall of the fitness empire he started in 2013.

“When I exited, and sold out of F45, I left a healthy, phenomenal, beast of a business. All the way from the company culture to the heart beat of the business… The workouts. F45 was special.”

What made F45 so special

I first joined my local F45 back in 2017 shortly after the studio had opened its doors, and was very quickly hooked.

The concept is super simple. Every F45 study in the world runs the exact same 45-minute class each day and no two workouts are ever the same. By varying the exercise type and the number of exercise stations, as well as the work time and rest time, you get something different every day.

The sessions incorporate functional movements (think squatting, lifting, pulling, pushing, jumping and twisting) that are designed to target fat loss and help to build and maintain lean muscle mass.

The classes alternate between HIIT-style cardio, strength training, or a hybrid mixture of the two.

I was completely hooked going five to six days a week. (Nine/Supplied)

It only took a month of attending five to six classes a week and I was all-in. I signed up to my first ‘8-Week Challenge’ and was able to lose over 8kg, even placing second in my studio.

I met F45’s global ambassador Cory George when he visited studios across Sydney during a trip Down Under, and eventually bought into the studio tech, wearing a LionHeart band that monitors performance (and ranks class participants) during each workout.

When COVID hit I remained a dedicated member, joining daily live workout sessions over Zoom, and was over the moon when the doors finally reopened after each lockdown, as I had missed the comradery and motivation that comes from being at a class in person.

READMORE: Is exercising at home as good as going to the gym?

Why I left F45

Deutsch’s post was flooded with comments from F45 franchisees and other devoted members, which provided some insight into the company’s collapse.

“The decisions they made during detrimental lockdowns was crushing to franchises,” one owner wrote.

While another member said: “What would you expect when it went public. It is what it is.”

For me personally, to be honest, the answer is probably a little underwhelming, as there was absolutely nothing wrong at my studio or with the trainers. They supported me through all the ups and downs of my ongoing fitness and health journey.

It came down to the simple fact that I was getting bored, and I wanted to shift my focus to strength training. I didn’t feel like I was progressing anymore.

“The body loves and responds most effectively to change. Repeating the same workout can actually reduce the effectiveness,” Ali Cavill, owner of Fit Fantastic, previously told 9Honey.

Plus, more and more research is showing resistance training is the way to go for a variety of reasons.

“If you’re wanting to increase your [muscle] shape and definition, then resistance training is by far the best way to do that,” Greg Stark, owner and trainer from Better Being, also told 9Honey.

In January I did a trial at a new gym that had opened in my area, and I officially canceled my membership with F45 last month.

It was bittersweet – and not as easy as I thought it would be, as I haven’t had to do much breaking up with people in the past. And let me tell you that’s exactly what it felt like!

I’m not saying I won’t ever go back, as I definitely still miss it. But for now, it was time for something new. I only hope the brand can turn it around.

Enter Altitude training

This week I officially hit 100 classes at AirLocker Training Penrith (which, full disclosure, is run by a family friend).

AirLocker provides strength and conditioning training at altitude, which it does by reducing oxygen in the room via innovative technology.

Workouts are set to about 13 to 14 per cent oxygen, as opposed to the regular 20 to 22 per cent level.

I’ve just hit 100 classes at AirLocker Training. (Supplied)

“When training at altitude, your oxygen levels in the blood are reduced and this produces an increase in red blood cell production,” Director of Performance Sandor Earl explains.

“Through that adaptation your body becomes more efficient at utilizing oxygen.”

In my time at AirLocker I have surprised myself with how much my strength and cardio fitness has improved in such a short period of time. And I was a relatively fit person going in.

Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to mix things up!

Adelaide Crows director apologizes to Eddie Betts over 2018 pre-season camp

loading

But Betts, a three-time All-Australian player, wrote that he would have to live for the rest of his life with the shame of having participated in some of the more confronting exercises conducted at the camp, run by a group he has chosen not to name.

Betts described the camp as “weird” and “completely disrespectful” and left him feeling “like a piece of me was brainwashed”.

In his book, Betts says that confidential information he had given in a private counseling session on the camp had been misused, and that the camp co-opted sensitive Aboriginal cultural rituals that offended him, jeopardised the wellbeing of other, younger Indigenous players within the Crows’ playing squad, and affected his family life. He said it led to his lack of form in 2018 that ultimately prompted him to leave the Crows.

Silvers said he had exchanged text messages with Betts on Wednesday, with a more detailed chat to be had later in the week.

“Six years [Betts] lit up the Adelaide Oval. For a long period of time, Eddie, Anna and the family have been an integral part of the club. So, what I read I was actually saddened to read it. People’s welfare and well-being is paramount to our club. So I’m sorry to read the coverage,” Silvers said.

“I don’t want to speak on his behalf. It’s obviously hurt him in a number of ways. But like I said, I’m a new leader at this footy club. I wasn’t there at the time. We’ve got a number of new pillars here we’ve got a new head coach, new head of foot and new chair, new CEO. I like to feel we’re moving in a different direction. And we’d love to see Eddie and his family back at our club. ”

Adelaide Crows director Mark Ricciuto (left) is the last key football figure still at the club in the wake of the fall out of the 2018 pre-season camp, as detailed by Eddie Betts in his new book.

Ricciuto, who said he hopes Betts “is moving on”, is again in the spotlight, with Silvers asked whether the former club skipper should step down from the club board.

“I don’t think it’s my place to speak about a director of our board, that’s probably more than the chair’s. But what I’ll say about Mark is that he’s a passionate person. He’s delivered both on and off the field. He’s been a really strong footy director and a great support for me.”

Ricciuto, a Crows champion and premiership player, said on Triple M Adelaide that the club had already admitted the camp was not executed perfectly despite the good intentions of those planning it. However, he said he was sad to hear of Betts’ experience.

“We all love Eddie and we hope Eddie is getting over that. That was four years ago. Certainly, the club moved on from that and are looking towards the future and have made a lot of ground since then. It has come up in Eddie’s book and that is fair enough. Hopefully, Eddie is moving on as well and the club can move on to bigger and better things,” Ricciuto said.

“It’s sad to hear Eddie write that because he has been one of the greats of the football club.”

Betts, a Wirangu, Kokatha and Guburn man, who is a father of five, said he returned from the camp with feelings of shame and humiliation that left him angry, paranoid, secretive and “feeling drained and lethargic”.

It was on the eve of the 2017 finals that the mind-training instructors instigated the “the power stance”, Betts wrote, which meant all 22 Crows players and coach Don Pyke stood with their arms down, slightly away from their sides, in a commanding posture, designed to try and intimidate the opposition.

The group that ran the camp has previously said it recognized ″⁣that some parts of the camp didn’t resonate with some players″⁣.

A SafeWork SA investigation in 2021 made no findings of any wrongdoing against the mind-training specialists, while a previous AFL investigation cleared the club.

Betts left the Crows after the 2019 campaign and finished his career at Carlton, where he had spent the first nine years of his career.

Police allege Tobias Moran allegedly suffocated Simone Strobel, court hears

The man charged over the death of German backpacker Simone Strobel on the NSW north coast is alleged to have suffocated her, but his lawyer has told a Sydney court the case against him isn’t supported by any evidence.

Tobias Moran, 42, was arrested last week and extradited from Western Australia to Sydney, charged with murder and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The body of kindergarten teacher Ms Strobel, 25, was found concealed under palm fronds in Lismore in February 2005, six days after she was reported missing.

Mr Moran applied for bail in Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court today.

“To describe the case as weak is to give it some credence,” his barrister Tim Game SC told the magistrate.

“The case is actually non-existent.”

In 2007, an inquiry found there was insufficient evidence to refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“Nothing has changed… except for the way in which police are prepared to characterize this case and then do everything they can to keep him in custody,” Mr Game said.

Man, face blurred being led out of the back of a car by a man wearing police uniform.
Tobias Moran was extradited from Perth to NSW where he was charged with the 2005 murder of Simone Strobel in Lismore. (Supplied: NSW Police)

He said police had compiled a statement of alleged facts which included unsourced material and assertions which were not supported by any direct or indirect evidence.

That included that Ms Strobel’s cause of death was suffocation, which the barrister described as “a theory”.

Mr Game said two autopsies had not come to any conclusion about the cause of death.

He told Magistrate Margaret Quinn that Mr Moran had voluntarily provided DNA more than once in recent times, had known he was a suspect since 2007, and had a family in Perth which is “entirely dependent” on his income.

It was “outrageous” to suggest that relatives may somehow facilitate an escape from the country, Mr Game said.

Last week, NSW Police revealed they were speaking with German authorities about warrants for two other people.

Superintendent Scott Tanner said the two had been persons of interest from the beginning and were in the country at the same time as Ms Strobel.

He said Mr Moran relocated to WA some time ago and had settled into life “quite comfortably”.

Lismore Tourist caravan park
The Lismore caravan park where Simone Strobel had been staying before her disappearance in 2005.

Ms Strobel’s family was “still very distressed”, police said, and had spent years wondering what happened to her.

Prosecutor Kim Gourlie described the matter as “a viable circumstantial case”.

He highlighted the findings of the inquest that Ms Strobel’s death was the result of “the action of one or more persons and it was not due to a natural cause or innocent event”, along with evidence from an autopsy of bruising.

“It’s the Crown’s submission that inferences are available in relation to her death not being from natural causes,” Mr Gourlie said.

Mr Gourlie said the accused had “lied” about “crucial events”, including the nature of their relationship and use of alcohol.

The court also heard that since 2007, additional statements have been obtained by police from people in Germany about the nature of the relationship between the accused and Ms Strobel.

Mr Gourlie said a “powerful incentive” for the accused to flee was the nature and seriousness of the charge, which would likely carry a substantial custodial sentence if he is convicted.

Mr Moran appeared via video link, wearing a face mask and blue plastic gown over his clothing.

The bail hearing continues.

Schmitt Defeats Greitens to Win Missouri’s GOP Senate Primary

If Mr. Greitens had won, Democrats had planned to attack him on those charges as well as allegations from his former wife that he had physically abused her and one of their young sons as his political career was collapsing.

“I’m hoping and praying that it is God’s will that Eric Greitens does not get the nomination, but if Eric Greitens wins the nomination, we will lose a Senate seat to the Democrats,” Rene Artman, the chairwoman of the St. Louis County Republican Central Committee, said days before the election. She had pleaded with Missouri Republican officials to more forcefully oppose Mr. Greitens.

On the Democratic side, Trudy Busch Valentine, a nurse and heiress of the Anheuser Busch fortune, narrowly defeated Lucas Kunce, a military veteran who had run a populist campaign with the backing of national progressive groups. Mr. Kunce was seen as a strong candidate, but many establishment Democrats were happy to see a late surge by Ms. Valentine, who can self-fund her campaign against Mr. Schmitt in the fall.

Mr. Schmitt benefited from a highly fractured field of Republicans, 21 in all. It included Representative Billy Long, who claimed to be the true voice of Mr. Trump, and Mark McCloskey, a personal injury lawyer who made headlines when he and his wife brandished guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in front of the couple’s St. Louis home .

Ms. Hartzler was backed by Missouri’s junior senator, Josh Hawley, who as attorney general had pursued the investigations that helped destroy Mr. Greitens’s governorship. Mr. Hawley sided with Ms. Hartzler at a time when a female candidate appeared to be best positioned to blunt Mr. Greitens’s rise.

Ms. Hartzler, however, was snubbed by Mr. Trump, who told his supporters on his social media site, “I don’t think she has what it takes to take on the Radical Left Democrats.” Mr. Trump called Mr. Greitens “tough” and “smart” in an interview on the pro-Trump network One America News, and his de el son de el Donald Trump Jr. shot automatic rifles with Mr. Greitens at a shooting range and said on camera that they were “striking fear in the hearts of liberals everywhere.”

Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is engaged to the younger Donald Trump, was Mr. Greitens’s national campaign chairwoman. But neither she nor her fiancé could convince the former president that Mr. Greitens could win. The former president called Mr. Schmitt Tuesday night to congratulate him.
