Scientists challenge Google’s quantum supremacy claims using 512 GPUs

Why it matters: In 2019, a leaked paper claimed physicists at Google used their quantum computer, Sycamore, to run a calculation that would overwhelm the world’s most powerful supercomputer. Chinese scientists recently challenged that they claim by successfully running the identical computation in a matter of hours using the computing power of today’s GPUs. Their results prove a supercomputer using today’s technology could likely beat Sycamore’s previous record.

Google’s quantum computing researchers originally ran the complex calculation in 200 seconds (just over three minutes), a feat they claimed would have taken the fastest supercomputer upwards of 10,000 years. Based on this result, the team claimed they had reached a significant milestone known as quantum supremacy. Quantum supremacy is the point at which a quantum device can solve problems that otherwise cannot be solved by classical technology in any reasonable amount of time.

Not everyone was a believer in Google’s self-proclaimed supremacy in 2019. Another major player in the quantum computing space, IBM, challenged Google’s claims from the start. Researchers there claimed the same task could be performed in a matter of days with the right amount of available resources, invalidating Google’s claim of quantum supremacy.

Chinese scientists successfully proved IBM’s point by attacking the original problem using advanced algorithms and compute power from today’s GPUs to complete the calculation. According to a report by science.org, the effort used 512 GPUs, a number that is far from unfathomable when considering how many units have been used in cryptocurrency mining operations over the last several years.

Chinese scientists successfully proved IBM’s point by attacking the original problem using advanced algorithms and compute power from today’s GPUs to complete the calculation. A report in Science notes that the effort used 512 GPUs — a number that is far from unfathomable when considering how many units cryptocurrency mining operations sometimes use.

The GPU compute power combined with advanced algorithms completed the same calculation within several hours. The results, which were unthinkable according to the leaked 2019 research findings, provide evidence to back claims that a large enough supercomputer could, in fact, rival Sycamore’s earlier achievement.

Conventional computing relies on bits, the most basic information units in computing. These bits can exist as only one of two values, either a 0 or 1.

Quantum computing relies on quantum bits, or qubits, comprised of a superposition of 0 and 1. Like a bit, a qubit can equal 0 or 1. However, it has the added property of equaling 0 and 1 simultaneously, resulting in vastly increased computing potential.

The achievement does not invalidate Google’s previous quantum achievements, nor does it mean that standard processing hardware can “catch up” to quantum’s capabilities. Google Quantum AI’s principal scientist, Sergio Boixo, said the original 2019 paper acknowledged the likely future improvement to classical algorithms but doesn’t believe today’s classical computing approach can keep pace with quantum technologies.

Boixo’s statement is accurate given the rate of quantum growth since 2019. Google’s original Sycamore was a 53-qubits processor. In 2021 IBM unveiled their 127-qubit Eagle, and their quantum roadmap looks to break the 1,000-qubit barrier sometime in 2023.

Kate warned as Princess Charlotte looks to switch sports ‘She’s got to play Netball, stop’ | Royal | News

Princess Charlotte’s sporty ambitions have been revealed right before the Commonwealth Games makes history with the first “Super Sunday” event for women. This Sunday will feature three finals with women’s hockey, cricket and netball competitions.

Princess Charlotte stole the show at the Commonwealth Games this week in Birmingham where the young royal attended with Kate Middleton and Prince William.

This is the first public royal engagement the Princess undertook without her brothers.

A Commonwealth Games board member disclosed that Charlotte enjoyed watching the women’s hockey team and now wishes to play the sport.

The women’s hockey team beat India 3-1 on Tuesday and made it into the final after beating New Zealand on Friday night.

The young royal would be following in the footsteps of her Mum, as Kate Middleton has been a hockey player since high school and even practiced with the British women’s hockey team during the 2012 Olympics.

Ama Agbeze, a Commonwealth netball gold medalist, said: “Kate and William went with Princess Charlotte to the England hockey match.

“Charlotte was saying she wants to play hockey. When I’d met Kate before she’d said that she played netball so I said ‘ella she has to play netball, stop’.

“But it doesn’t matter as long as she plays sport, she can play every sport under the sun.

“It will be good if people take her lead.

“If Princess Charlotte is sitting there and thinking ‘I want to do this’, how many other children are watching and thinking that?”

Ama Agbeze won the netball gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is now a board member of the 2022 Games.

She attended a press conference today to promote the historic Super Sunday event, in which three women’s finalist competitions will be held.

Ms Agbeze said: “There are so many children here. What memories will they have going back to school? That is inspiring the next generation”.

The Commonwealth Games this year has held more medal events for women than men, and ticket sales have hit a record high, making them the most attended Commonwealth Games ever.

Ms Agbeze joked about Birmingham’s popularity. She said: “My nephew wanted a ticket. I said ‘I’m on the board, but I can’t work miracles.”

Princess Charlotte has shown this week to be inspired by many female athletes, as Prince William also recently revealed that she is also a talented football goalie.

Prince William told the Lionesses on a recent trip to their training camp that the seven-year-old Princess is a “budding star for the future.”

The Duke of Cambridge said: “Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she’s really good in goal.

“She said ‘please tell them that!’”

Last week, William and Charlotte also wished the Lionesses good luck before their historic win in the Women’s Euro final.

The pair finished 16.68 points ahead of Malaysian pair NG Yan Yee and Nur Dhabitah Sabri at Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Mia Vallee, 21, delivered an incredible display to win the individual 1m springboard final on Friday and added a bronze to her Games haul alongside Margo Erlam.

Smith was delighted to successfully defend the Commonwealth title for Australia and bounce back from a tough showing at Gold Coast 2018.

She said: “Back-to-back Australia. Keeping it in the family.

“Maddi and I had an upsetting Gold Coast campaign in synchro, so it felt good to get that one back today.”

On winning their first Commonwealth title, Smith added: “I feel really proud.

I really feel proud. To actually be there today was really special

Annabelle Smith

“Maddi and I have been together for a really long time but never won a Commonwealth gold medal.

“We knew that we had put in the hard work to get it and we knew that we were good enough to stand at the top of the podium – but to actually be there today was really special.

“We got here pretty early, so it was nice when the diving finally started and now I’m glad it’s over.”

Keeney was pleased that their hard work and perseverance finally paid off.

She said: “It’s every day. We’ve been together for eight years. It’s so much hard work and all of the athletes understand that.

“There have been so many tough teams over the years, and even now, all the divers are amazing.

“It’s both of our first gold medals and I never thought I would be able to get it.”

New York Times column urges Biden to give up re-election dreams: ‘Hey, Joe, don’t give it a go’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

On Saturday, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd spoke for three quarters of the Democratic Party, urging President Joe Biden to announce that he will not be running for re-election for the good of the country.

In her opinion piece, titled, “Hey, Joe, Don’t Give It a Go,” Dowd urged the president to not make the mistake that the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg did, and leave office before overstaying his welcome and making things worse for the Democratic Party.

Dowd began, stating, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a cautionary tale. She missed the moment to leave the stage, ignoring friendly nudges from Democrats and entreaties from Obama allies.”

As such, “Her death opened the door to the most conservative court in nearly a century. Her successor, a religious zealot straight out of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ is erasing Justice Ginsburg’s achievements on women’s rights,” Dowd noted, referencing Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

Addressing Biden directly, she insisted, “The timing of your exit can determine your place in the history books.”

Though she acknowledged the recent string of successes for Biden, such as Democrats finding enough support to pass legislation such as the “Inflation Reduction Act,” the columnist argued that this “winning streak” should not inspire him to run again.

“The opposite is true. It should give him the confidence to leave, secure in the knowledge that he has made his mark,” Dowd said.

She continued to give the president credit, stating, “President Biden has had a cascade of legislative accomplishments on tech manufacturing, guns, infrastructure — and hopefully soon, climate and prescription drugs — that validate his promises when he ran.” She called them “genuine achievements that Democrats have been chasing for decades, and they will affect generations to come.”

Though again, she mentioned that he could “leave on a high, knowing that he has delivered on his promises for progress and restored decency to the White House.”

Dowd characterized Biden’s presidency “as a balm to the bombastic Donald Trump,” and “an escape from Trump and Trumpism, a way to help us get our bearings after the thuggish and hallucinatory reign of a con man.”

Implying that’s all it should have ever been, she subsequently wrote, “Then he and his team got carried away and began unrealistically casting him as an FDR with a grand vision to remake the social contract.”

“Biden’s mission was not to be a visionary but to be a calming force for a country desperately in need of calming, and a bridge to the next generation,” Dowd wrote, adding that “he’s a logical one-termer.”

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd claimed Biden should now announce his plans to not run in 2024 so that Democrats can look for 'new blood' to put up as presidential candidates.

TWO NEW YORK REPS JOIN GROWING LIST OF DEMOCRATS WHO REFUSE TO COMMIT TO SUPPORTING BIDEN IN 2024

Dowd gave credence to the “growing sense in the Democratic Party and in America” that dodging a “comeback by Trump or the rise of the odious Ron DeSantis,” requires “new blood.”

She argued that if Biden admitted his plans for next term now, “it would give Democrats a chance to sort through their meh field and leave time for a fresh, inspiring candidate to emerge.”

Dowd then called Biden a “lame duck,” but spun that to work in his favor, writing, “Usually, being a lame duck weakens you. But in Biden’s case, it could strengthen him. We live in a Washington where people too often put power over principle.”

“So the act of leaving could elevate Biden, freeing him from typical re-election pressures, so he and his team could do what they thought was right rather than what was politically expedient,” she claimed.

Dowd also mentioned that the question of Biden’s age won’t go away, as it’s “already a hot topic in focus groups and an undercurrent in Democratic circles.”

She then concluded her column, stating that for Biden to deal with these “dangerous times” involving inflation, climate change, China, and “women’s rights on the line,” “It might be best to have a president unshackled from the usual political restraints .”

Dowd also claimed Biden accepting the fact that he's a one-term president means he'll be "unshackled from the usual political restraints," and lead even better.

Elon Musk’s dad Errol Musk denies he is ‘not proud’ of his son after Kyle and Jackie O Show comments

Elon Musk’s father created a whirlwind of controversy this week after telling Australian radio hosts he is not proud of his billionaire son.

Errol Musk, 76, told Daily Mail Australia his three daughters were so upset with the comments on Kyle and Jackie O they refused to speak to him for days.

But the retired electrical engineer said the comments were misunderstood and that he didn’t properly hear the question.

‘Elon knows it’s not true, so he would never get upset about it. He just laughs this kind of stuff off,’ Mr Musk said.

‘But the last message Elon sent to me was ”Dad, the press play you like a fiddle so please keep quiet”.’

While the two have shared a somewhat rocky relationship over the years, Mr Musk said he had been proud of Elon since ‘the day he was born’.

Errol Musk (right) said his billionaire son Elon (left) knows his comments to Kyle and Jackie O are ‘not true’ – ‘he would never get upset about it. He just laughs this kind of stuff off’

The media storm follows bombshell revelations last month that Mr Musk has fathered two children with his stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout, 34.

It also comes on the heels of Elon’s ongoing tensions with US President Joe Biden – as well as his bitter legal fight to pull out of the $44 billion ($63billion AUD) Twitter buyout, something his father says he may partly be responsible for.

The Australian radio interview

During Monday’s radio interview on KIIS FM, Jackie O said: ‘Your offspring is a genius. He’s worth so much money and has created so many things, you can’t take that away from him. Are you proud?’

But Mr Musk shocked listeners by replying ‘no’.

‘You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something,’ Errol replied.

I have clarified the awkward mix-up by saying: ‘I didn’t actually notice her question about being proud? I thought she asked “were you expecting this coming?”

‘It was only when I listened to the recording afterwards that I realized.’

Mr Musk, who was calling from South Africa, said he simply got lost in the conversation of the energetic hosts.

‘It was a bit more confusing because the other chap (Kyle), who was a nice fellow, was laughing a lot so I never quite picked up what she (Jackie O) was saying while I was talking,’ he said.

‘If you ask any parent if they are proud of their son, you are proud of them from the day they are born.’

But while he knows Elon is far too busy to be concerned about how his comments were reported, he revealed his daughters were extremely upset.

‘I still fly airplanes but my kids think I should go to a retirement home after that,’ he joked.

‘All three of them got a hold of me and said “what’s wrong with you, how could you possibly say something like that?”

‘Alexandra wouldn’t even speak to me. I kept sending her messages from her but she refused to talk.’

Mr Musk has since explained his mistake and he and his daughters are once again on good terms.

Backlash after having children with his stepdaughter

Kyle and Jackie O also asked Mr Musk about his relationship with 34-year-old stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout – who he was married to and shares two young children with.

He was married to her mother Heide Bezuidenhout in the early 1990s for two years before they divorced and Jana was placed in foster care.

‘I never really saw her much at all after that but Then in about 2014, she wrote to me and said she was in a desperate situation living in a store room with some chap and they had no food and her eight-year-old daughter had been put into care,’ Mr Musk said.

‘The next day I went to see her and I sorted her out with some funds. She was so thin – I couldn’t believe anybody could be as thin as she was.

‘She is a real princess but she was dressed in rags so I took her [shopping] for clothing and food.’

Mr Musk continued to provide her with money for a number of years and the two grew closer.

‘She left her boyfriend and came to me at one point when she was about 30 years old,’ he said.

‘Obviously there was a big generation gap but we really liked each other and enjoyed each other’s company.

‘We had a little boy, Elliot Rush who is now five, and I can’t imagine a world without him.’

Jana also welcomed a girl, Asha Rose Musk, in 2019.

‘She since has gone back to that boyfriend, and he is more her age, but I provide them with an apartment and medical aid, a car and whatever they need,’ he said.

‘We’ve never had DNA tests done because we love her anyway, no matter what. The main thing is we all love her.

‘They both have their little life and I don’t interfere. I get along with her boyfriend great. And Jana’s mother loves them too.’

Elon’s battle with Biden and the Twitter deal

Mr Musk said he’s never had any doubts about Elon when it comes to his work ethic or scientific mind.

The 51-year-old is the world’s richest person after amassing a fortune of US$242billion, following his incredible success with the payment service platform PayPal, solar car company Tesla and the rocket-building firm Space X.

But his father does ‘worry’ about his recent political statements and the immense pressure he’s under.

‘At the beginning of this year Elon started making a lot of political statements because of this Biden situation in the United States,’ Mr Musk said.

‘You have this really strange thing where you have this guy who can’t put two sentences together who is supposed to be the President.

‘I told Elon, you are getting into the political side now. How is your security? You have to be careful because the political situation is very dangerous.’

The US President earlier this year ruffled Elon’s feathers by ignoring Tesla and calling rival manufacturer GM – the nation’s electric car leader.

Mr Musk said Elon’s growing appetite for politics coincided with his ambition to purchase the social media platform Twitter for $44billion ($63billion AUD).

‘Elon had this idea that both sides have their chance to give their opinions, not just one side,’ his father said.

‘Then he decided he was going to go after Twitter with a plan to make it a neutral platform – that’s all he wanted. But from my experience that was a bit naïve.’

Now the tech billionaire and Twitter are set to go to court after Elon blew up the deal, accusing the company of drastically under-estimating the number of fake accounts.

‘A little while ago I tried to join Twitter and it told me I already had a profile with over 400 posts,’ Mr Musk said.

‘It was a fake account. It had foul language and all sorts of stuff like that. It was not me.

‘I mentioned that to Elon recently and told him to keep it in mind – and Elon has realized that now and he’s said ‘I’m not going to buy this platform if it’s full of a bunch of fake accounts’.’

'I told Elon, you are getting into the political side now. How is your security? You have to be careful because the political situation is very dangerous, 'Errol Musk said he advised his son Elon

Australian music legend, The Seekers’ singer dies aged 79

Along with Guy were Keith Potger and another advertising man, Bruce Woodley, and soon Durham was a regular in their Monday night performances at a popular coffee lounge. Potger in those days was also an ABC radio producer, so in his lunch hour he made a demo tape of the group, which became the first album, Introducing The Seekers – although Potger was not supposed to have a second job, so he didn’t appear on the record’s cover. Durham also recorded two more songs with the Jazz Preachers, Muddy Water and Trombone Frankie (a version of Bessie Smith’s Trombie Cholly).

loading

Ready to see the world, in 1964 the group signed on to perform on the SS Fairsky to get to London. They planned to come home after 10 weeks in Europe but got so many bookings in England they decided to stay on.

In November 1964, the group released I’ll Never Find Another You, and by February it was No. 1 in the UK and Australia, and the Seekers were on their way to stardom. Over the next few years, the group released the hit records A World of Our Own, The Carnival is Over and Morningtown Ride.

The Seekers’ biggest international seller was George Girl (music by Dusty Springfield’s brother, Tom), which had originally been the title song for the movie starring Lynn Redgrave, James Mason, Charlotte Rampling and Alan Bates. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and the single made No.1 in America.

In 1967, 200,000 people (about 10 per cent of Melbourne’s population at the time) saw the Seekers perform at the Myer Music Bowl. It wasn’t until 2020 that a full recording of the set that day was released, and at the launch of the Hidden Treasures record Durham, then 76, looked back in wonder at what is still the biggest concert in the Southern Hemisphere.

Keith Potger, Judith Durham, Athol Guy and Bruce Woodley during a promotional stunt for The Seekers.

Keith Potger, Judith Durham, Athol Guy and Bruce Woodley during a promotional stunt for The Seekers.

“I had a dry mouth, you do get that sometimes with nerves, plus there was no air conditioning and it was a Melbourne summer, typical March weather,” Durham said. “I’ll Never Find Another You had become No. 1 all over the world and that was a big turning point for us, but we hadn’t had the huge welcome from the Australian people yet. That was what was so mind-blowing when we performed that show at the bowl.”

It was part of a series of big moments for the band in 1967 – The Seekers Down Under rated through the roof on television, and the members were named Australians of the Year (the only time in the award’s history that a group has had the title).

However, the following year, despite all her success with the Seekers, Durham decided that she wanted something else and announced that she was leaving the group. She also decided, in 1968, to become a vegetarian, and after that she lived a life that was non-smoking, environmentally friendly, decaffeinated, teetotal, drug free and cruelty free.

Judith Durham launched a successful solo career after leaving the Seekers in 1968.

The decision to leave the Seekers paid off, offers for her to sing as a solo artist flooded in, and she asked a London-based freelance musician, Ron Edgeworth, to be her musical director, pianist and arranger. Edgeworth had worked with many big names and was in constant demand, but he signed on with Durham.

Her first solo album was For Christmas with Love, and she continued to tour, working in New Zealand and Australia, and was in constant demand for tours and nightclubs in the UK. In 1969, she and Edgeworth were married in Melbourne.

Durham continued to work around the world, singing anything and everything from folk to jazz to blues to gospel to ragtime and classical. In the 1970s, she recorded trad jazz albums with Edgeworth and released a piano and voice recording from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1978.

In the 1980s, Durham and Edgeworth settled on the Sunshine Coast, and she concentrated on writing and performing her own work. She and Ian Austin also wrote a musical, Gotta Be Rainbows.

The bad times came in the 1990s. In 1990, Durham, Edgeworth and their tour manager were in a car accident that killed the driver of the other car and left Durham with a fractured wrist and leg. However, she was never daunted. In January 1993, with the Seekers’ silver jubilee approaching, the group announced a reunion concert. This turned into a successful tour, but then Edgeworth was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and died in late 1994.

A better part of 1994 was the release of Durham’s authorized biography, Colors of My Life: The Judith Durham Story, by Graham Simpson. This was popular enough to be updated and re-released in 1998 and 2003. In 1995, the Seekers were inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association’s (ARIA) Hall of Fame, and Durham was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to music.

After years without an album, in 1996 Durham released Mona Lisas. The following year this was released again as always there with Durham’s solo recording of Bruce Woodley’s i am australian (with Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply and Mandawuy Yunupingu of Yothu Yindi).

For some years around this time, Durham was stalked by an obsessed fan, who bombarded her with telephone calls and faxes and started spurious law cases against her. In 1998, the stalker was eventually convicted of stalking and ordered not to approach Durham.

In 2000, Durham’s album Let Me Find Love was re-released as hold on to your dreams, with the extra recording of her song Australia Land of Today. Durham toured Australian again in 2001 and, in 2003, she toured the UK to mark her 60th birthday. Ella’s A film of her birthday concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall was released in 2004 as a DVD.

In 2006, Durham sang part of her song Seldom Melbourne Leaves My Mind in Melbourne, and was invited by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Fund to record it as a fundraiser. In the end, Durham recorded her de ella entire The Australian Cities Suite, which was released in October 2008 in aid of charity. The suite includes Sydney Girl of My Dreams, Happy Years I Spent in Hobart and Australia Land of Today.

Durham went back on stage in 2012 with her 50th anniversary one-woman touring show, Colors of My Life, and her 1969 album Gift of Song was at last released on CD.

Over the years, Durham performed with the Seekers, usually for charity, and in 2013 they got together for a 50th anniversary tour. Celebrations to mark the anniversary included Australia Post presenting Durham with a 24-carat gold “stamp” as part of the “Legends of Australian Music” series, and the portrait of the group by Helen Edwards hanging in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

Then, after their first tour concert, at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall, Durham complained about not feeling well and collapsed with a brain haemorrhage. The stroke affected her ability to read and write, and she spent months in rehabilitation, but she did not lose her singing voice, as she told The Age in 2019. “The doctor said, ‘Can you sing me a bit of a song?’ and of course I sang Morningtown Ride.”

  • Schumer wants to dare the GOP into knocking out a popular insulin cap plan, per two people familiar.
  • The $35 insulin cap is a major Democratic priority included in the Inflation Reduction Act.
  • Schumer’s maneuver would set the stage for a tough vote for Republicans.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wants to dare Senate Republicans to knock out a popular $35 monthly cap on insulin prices from the party’s big bill under consideration, per two people familiar with the move.

Those people were granted anonymity to reveal confidential discussions.

The $35 limit on insulin co-pays is one of the most popular elements of the legislation that Democrats want to pass using budget reconciliation. That allows maneuver Senate Democrats to sidestep GOP resistance and approve certain bills with only a simple majority vote if they all stay united.

But the insulin cap has always been at risk of falling out of the bill since it may not comply with its strict procedural rules. The process is overseen by the Senate parliamentarian, who gave the green light to most of the Democratic legislation’s climate, health, and tax provisions overnight.

The fate of the insulin cap remains formally up in the air. But one of the familiar people said that the parliamentarian sustained a GOP objection to it during the “Byrd Bath,” meaning the top official didn’t believe it complied with reconciliation’s rules.

The $35 insulin cap is still in the Inflation Reduction Act for now. If the parliamentarian strikes out the provision, Senate Democrats can still keep it in and force Republicans to raise a “point of order” to take it out. That would set the stage for a recorded vote to overrule the parliamentarian at a 60 vote threshold.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, who has worked with Democrats in the past on drug pricing said she was waiting to see the final language before weighing in on the Democrats’ plan. Her vote for her would be crucial to getting past the 60-vote threshold.

“I still don’t know what language has survived and what language hasn’t,” Collins told Insider. “So, I’m going to wait and see what the parliamentarian’s final decisions are.”

2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class recalled in Australia

The incorrect filling of transmission oil on the production line could cause the vehicle to come to a stop – or ignite a fire.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has recalled 326 examples of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, citing a manufacturing fault that resulted in the vehicle’s transmission either being overfilled or underfilled with oil.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Incorrect levels of transmission oil could result in the vehicle stalling. If the oil level is too high, oil may leak and cause a fire. These hazards increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

The total figure of 326 affected vehicles covers 324 examples of 2019 Mercedes-Benz A200 sedans, and two 2019 Mercedes-Benz A180 sedans – with hatchback variants unaffected by the recall.

Contracts, driver market, Daniel Ricciardo future, Pierre Gasly contract clause, McLaren, Alpine replacement

The F1’s silly season has well and truly arrived, with the retirement of Sebastian Vettel last week sparking mid-season musical chairs as Fernando Alonso signed with Aston Martin.

Now widespread reports suggest McLaren will snap up rising Australian star Oscar Piastri, leaving fellow countryman Daniel Ricciardo without a seat for next year.

It leaves Alpine on the lookout for a driver to replace Alonso and Ricciardo shaped as the most logical option, having previously worked together when the team was called Renault.

Lamonato: Likely to see Piastri in F1 | 06:01

But there could be a twist which opens up another alternative for Alphine, should they opt to go in a different direction.

A report back in June from RacingNews365claimed that AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has a clause in his contract that would allow him to join a rival team in 2023 — with one condition.

That is that the team is placed higher than AlphaTauri on the standings and Alpine, currently sitting in fourth in the constructors’ championship, would fit that bill.

Now that report has been shared around again given it takes on even more relevance with Alonso’s shock exit.

Gasly’s path back to Red Bull is seemingly blocked after Sergio Perez re-signed until at least the end of 2024 and the Frenchman had been linked to McLaren earlier in the year.

But with Piastri seemingly on his way to McLaren, there would be an opportunity at Alpine should that be of interest to both parties.

Speaking back in June, Gasly said he was in “ongoing conversations” with Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko about his future.

“Well, at the moment, it is not a question of looking outside [Red Bull] or looking anywhere,” Gasly told media, per RacingNews365.com.

“I think my contract situation is pretty clear with Red Bull.

“It’s just ongoing conversation with Helmut and the management to know what’s best for all of us. But, as I said, it’s been very logical that they signed Sergio.

“He’s been competitive since the start of the year, so yeah, no surprise on that side. Obviously, it impacts what’s going to happen for my career in the coming years and, based on that, we just need to have normal conversation on what’s best going forward.”
