Hundreds of Victorian renewable energy projects in limbo after program funding ceases

A decision to cease funding for a successful statewide community renewable energy program is leaving hundreds of projects important to Victoria’s de-carbonisation targets in limbo.

The Victorian government has not re-funded the Community Power Hub program, which ran in six areas across the state for the past 12 months.

Program leaders say the abrupt end to the program will create an uncertain future for the community renewable energy projects it was designed to help progress.

Not-for-profit organization Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions (BREAZE) led the Community Power Hub for the Grampians region, which supported 40 projects through the feasibility stage.

President Mary Debrett said many active community members would continue driving their projects to completion, but others would struggle to get off the ground without external support.

She said she was disappointed the program was not re-funded.

“It will be those communities that have proactive people that will be the ones advantaged and those that don’t will be disadvantaged,” Ms Debrett said.

“For those organizations and communities where we have done feasibility studies, they are going to be needing some extra support.

“They are slow-burn projects that take a lot of work.”

They facilitated energy audits at Grampians Health and J Ward in Ararat and the installation of solar panels at golf clubs, disability services, schools, community halls, and sporting clubs.

Slow, complex projects

Natimuk Community Energy president Edwin Irvine said their community solar farm project had been progressing for 14 years, but the Grampians Community Power Hub assisted them through crucial steps.

He said Grampians Community Power Hub staff and volunteers helped them through a complex design and approvals process as well as governance and finance decisions, which they could not have done on their own.

“Before doing this, I didn’t know anything at all about energy regulation or the physics of a solar farm and how it connects with the grid. I needed that help,” Mr Irvine said.

“I can imagine there are a lot of other community groups that are going to need that help.

“If that help is not there, those other community groups are going to find it really, really hard.”

energy revolution

Experts say community renewable energy projects will play an important role in Victoria’s renewable energy transition.

Melbourne Energy Institute’s Professor Pierluigi Mancarella said sharing energy on a community level made sense because of cost and efficiency.

He said smaller renewable-based power plants with batteries and storage should replace “gigantic” fossil fuel-based plants and community-level batteries would be more efficient than household ones.

Professor Mancarella said supporting community renewable energy projects would be fundamental to Victoria’s decarbonisation process.

“There is so much learning… it is a competing revolution,” he said.

“It completely destroys the business models, commercial models and regulatory environment, which we have operated in so far.”

New funding scheme

Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the successful Community Power Hub program had been funded for 12 months and progressed 200 proposed projects in that time.

“We hope these local success stories inspire more renewable energy projects in the community, taking advantage of our rebates and programs for households, community groups, and businesses,” she said.

The Victorian government has created a repayable grants program, where at least $50,000 is available for community group renewable energy projects, but loans must be repaid in five years.

The money is a low-interest-rate loan to help groups secure third-party funding.

The Victorian government has legislated a target of 50 per cent renewable energy for the state by 2030.

Texas Gov. Abbott Has Sent Over 6,100 Immigrants to DC, Expanding to NYC

  • Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas has sent over 6,100 immigrants from the border to Washington, DC, per NPR.
  • In April, Abbott announced he would send buses of migrants to DC to address immigration.
  • Abbott announced on Friday that the first charter bus of immigrants arrived in New York City.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent over 6,100 immigrants from the border to Washington, DC, his office said on Friday

After the 36-hour journey to DC’s Union Station, migrants who exit the charter buses are met with volunteers from mutual aid organizations to help them get settled but not officials from the local or federal government, NPR reported.

“It was really crazy because they were just leaving them on the street,” Abel Nuñez, executive director of DC’s Central American Resource Center, told NPR while describing the first bus arrival on April 16.

“We knew it was on its way so we were there since 5 am just waiting for them along with mutual aid organizations,” Nuñez added to NPR. “It was incredible how shell-shocked these people were coming out of the buses.”

In April, Abbott announced he would send charter buses of migrants to DC to help Texas “cope with this latest escalation of the Biden border disaster.” It came after the Biden administration announced the end of Title 42, a pandemic-era public health order that blocked many migrants from entering the US.

“Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe,” Abbott said in a statement.

On Friday, Abbott announced the first arrival of a charter bus of immigrants in New York City, which will “now be a drop-off location for the busing strategy as part of the Governor’s response to the Biden Administration’s open border policies,” the statement said.

“In addition to Washington, DC, New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said in the statement. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”

While criticizing Abbott, New York officials said the immigrants, over 40 of which arrived Friday, will be welcomed to the city.

“Governor Greg Abbott is continuing to play with the lives of human beings. We think this is cruel, it’s disgusting and it’s pure cowardice,” said Manuel Castro, commissioner of the Office of Immigrant Affairs, per CBS News.

Activision Blizzard’s mobile games were top earners last quarter

Activision Blizzard has published a financial report that shows that more than half of the total revenue came from mobile games in the last quarter, more than PC and console games combined.

The report covers the three months up to and including June 30, during which time Activision Blizzard earned £273.4million ($332million) from PC games, and £309.6million ($376million) from console sales. Staggeringly, from “mobile and ancillary” sales the company brought in £684.3million ($831million) therefore accounting for more than 50 per cent of total income.

If Activision Blizzard were to include income from their “Other” category, which includes income from the Overwatch and Call of Duty leagues as well as its distribution business, which is at an impressive £86.5million ($105million), it still would be less than 50 per cent of its total revenue.

At the same point last year console and mobile revenues were much more competitive with one another. Consoles accounted for approximately 32 per cent of the total income, whilst mobile saw around 35 per cent. PC brought in 27 per cent.

This shows an unmistakable growth year on year for mobile. PC and consoles declined sharply, whilst mobile grew 5 per cent. The majority of Activision Blizzard’s income came from King, the mobile game publisher Activision acquired in 2016, which was responsible for more than 82 per cent of the total mobile revenue. King are the company behind candy crushthe US’ most successful mobile game for five consecutive years.

Devil Immortal is another mobile game that comes from Activision Blizzard, and has faced extreme criticism regarding its monetisation, yet has achieved a massive 30 million players just two months since launching. On the other hand, it is the company’s worst rated game.

In other news, after a string of rumors and leaks, Tactics Ogre: Reborn has finally been announced and has received backlash over the price and graphics.

Eli Templeton, St Kilda Saints, Balwyn Football Club, Eastern Football Club, Port Melbourne, VFL, concrete, concussion, fence, bump, Zac Clarke

A former Saint has been rushed to hospital, reportedly with a fractured skull, after a shocking incident that saw a local footy game called off on Saturday.

Eli Templeton was sent crashing over a fence while representing Balwyn Football Club and landed head-first onto the surrounding concrete.

He suffered concussion in the shocking incident that’s been described in a News Corp report as “not malicious”.

It was former Docker Zac Clarke who made the contact that sent Templeton over the fence in the clash between Balwyn and Doncaster East.

Templeton was reportedly unconscious for at least two minutes after the accident.

There’s reports the 26-year-old suffered a fractured skull in the sickening collision which left teammates and those at the ground visibly shaken.

But in good news for Templeton, he is set to make a full recovery.

Balwyn president Richard Wilson told local media the youngster was “cognitive and speaking and passing all the tests” on Saturday night.

It’s believed if Templeton had gone over the fence a few meters away from where he landed, it would have been onto grass.

Templeton had been granted permission to play for Balwyn after his VFL side Port Melbourne had the bye this weekend.

In a statement, Port Melbourne confirmed Templeton was injured in the collision.

“The club is aware that one of our VFL players Eli Templeton was injured in a local game today playing for Balwyn,” the statement read.

“We ask that everyone respects his privacy and we will update in due course.”

The 26-year-old played 14 games for the Saints across three seasons before being delisted at the end of 2016.

The Burnie product was the number three pick in the 2013 Rookie Draft but his AFL career was over by the age of just 21.

The Balwyn clash was called off early in the third term after Templeton’s sickening injury with the club leading by 23 points at the time.

Taiwan says China military drills appear to simulate attack, Chinese embassy warns Australia against involvement

China’s embassy in Canberra has taken aim at Australia, the United States and Japan, accusing them of “finger pointing” and victim blaming after they condemned Beijing’s military exercises around Taiwan.

However the Australian government has fired back, saying the military drills were an overreaction following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei.

Taiwan’s government claimed China’s military drills appear to simulate an attack on the self-ruled island, after multiple Chinese warships and aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait following Ms Pelosi’s controversial trip.

In response, Taiwan’s armed forces dispatched air and naval patrols around the island and activated land-based missile systems, the Ministry of National Defense said.

As of Saturday at 5pm, 20 Chinese aircraft and 14 ships continued to carry out sea and air exercises around the Taiwan Strait, he said.

The ministry said that zones declared by China as no-go areas during the exercises for other ships and aircraft had “seriously damaged the peace.”

It emphasized that Taiwan’s military did not seek war, but would prepare for it, and respond to it accordingly.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa issued a joint statement condemning China’s exercises, and demanding they “immediately cease.”

Beijing’s shipments in Australia fired back.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for the finger-pointing on China’s justified actions to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity,” a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said on Saturday.

“We firmly oppose and sternly condemn this.”

China’s military drills ‘disproportionate’: Foreign Minister Penny Wong

The embassy went on to claim it was China that was the victim of “political provocation” from the US.

“The actions taken by the Chinese government to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity and curb the separatist activities are legitimate and justified,” the spokesperson said.

“Instead of expressing sympathy and support to the victim, the Australian side has condemned the victim along with the perpetrators.

“This is completely putting the cart before the horse and reversing the right from the wrong.”

China’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement that it had carried out military exercises as planned in the sea and airspaces to the north, south-west, and east of Taiwan, with a focus on “testing the capabilities” of its land strike and sea assault systems.

Australia likely to be called on for Taiwan support

The Australian Government said the military drills were an overreaction to Ms Pelosi’s visit.

“We feel that the response by the Chinese Government was disproportionate and destabilizing,” government frontbencher Anika Wells told Sky News on Sunday morning.

“And that now remains a watching brief for Minister [Penny] Wong, obviously, to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to stabilize security in the region.”

Joe Biden has previously said the US was committed to military intervention, in the event China attacks Taiwan.

Shadow Defense Minister Andrew Hastie said it was a principled position to protect a neighbour, and suggested Australia would likely be called on for some form of support in the event of war breaking out.

“If there was a conflict around Taiwan, whether we’re involved directly or indirectly on the periphery, we would certainly be in the gun,” he told the ABC’s Insiders.

“That’s why we need to build our deterrence strength, that’s why we need to exercise exceptional political leadership, diplomatic leadership.”

China says Pelosi visit violated ‘one China’ policy

China launched live-fire military drills following Ms Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan earlier this week, saying it violated the “one China” policy.

China sees the island as a breakaway province to be annexed by force if necessary and considers visits to Taiwan by foreign officials as recognizing its sovereignty.

Taiwan’s army also said it detected four unmanned aerial vehicles flying in the vicinity of the offshore county of Kinmen on Friday night and fired warning flares in response.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen reassured that the Taiwanese government posted “closely monitoring” the exercises and are “ready to respond as necessary”, in a tweet on Friday.

The Chinese military exercises began Thursday and are expected to last until Sunday.

Taiwan has put its military on alert and staged civil defense drills, while the US has deployed numerous naval assets in the area.

The Biden administration and Ms Pelosi have said the US remains committed to a “one-China” policy, which recognizes Beijing as the government of China but allows informal relations and defense ties with Taipei.

The administration discouraged but did not prevent Ms Pelosi from visiting.

113 Haitian migrants in custody after boat runs aground off Florida coast

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Border patrol took 113 Haitian migrants into custody after their sailing-vessel ran aground off the coast of Florida Saturday afternoon.

The boat was spotted off the coast of Key Largo, near the gated community of Ocean Reef, officials said.

Rescue crews transferred the people from the grounded vessel to Coast Guard ships, with some entering the water without life jackets and needed to be rescued by crew members.

Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar, who heads the agency’s Miami sector, said in a Twitter post that agents are working to keep the migrants “safe, clean, fed and healthy and identify exactly who they are and what they may or may not have wrong with them.”

Nintendo recap: Switch sales are down but Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s new additions have us fired up

Hello Nintendo fans, and welcome to the latest recap. This was a rather busy week for Nintendo. First, we had a Pokémon Presents that explained upcoming events for multiple Pokémon games and also gave us greater insight into Scarlet and Violet. In other news, Nintendo’s latest financial report revealed some surprising information. We also finally learned when the highly-anticipated Minecraft amiibo will be releasing. There’s more to discuss, so let’s dive in.

Pokémon Presents shows off new Pokémon, rideable Legendaries, and more

The latest Pokémon Presents took place Wednesday morning and announced several updates for various Pokémon titles across different platforms. After talking about the Pokémon Unite’s one-year anniversary and the return of Mewtwo in Pokémon Cafe Remix, the presentation ended with a focus on what everyone really wanted to hear about — Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

We finally saw that the Legendary Pokémon — Koraidon (Scarlet) and Moraidon (Violet) — operate as vehicles that can wheel you across the land, climb up cliffs, swim in the water, or fly through the air. The presentation even showed that players can ride next to each other in multiplayer and explore the world as they defeat gyms in whatever order they want.

Two new Pokémon, as well as a new regional variant, were also revealed, with one of them stealing the hearts of the online community. There’s Paldean Wooper, a Poison/Ground-Type variant; Cetitan, an Ice-type land whale; and Fidough, the best wittle donut dog anyone could ask for. It only took minutes for Twitter to erupt in a shower of Fidough fan art.

While it was nice to see new faces, we got no official number for how many Pokémon would be in the Gen 9 Pokédex. However, many familiar Pokémon were shown off in the video, which doubled the number of all confirmed Pokémon we know will show up in the game.

The main gimmick for Gen 9 was also revealed. The Terastal phenomenon allows Pokémon to shine like gems with ridiculously large glittering crowns on their heads. As @Olivart_ on Twitter illustrated in their meme, imagine a Ring Pop on a Pokémon’s dome and you’ve basically got the idea.

John Legend reveals trauma of losing child in Desert Island Discs | Desert Island Discs

The musician John Legend said he was “hesitant” to publicly share images of his late baby son, Jack, who was stillborn two years ago.

The black and white photographs, which were posted on Instagram shortly after Legend and his wife, the model Chrissy Teigen, had suffered the stillbirth of their third child, were a way to reach other bereaved parents affected by this kind of sudden loss.

“I was hesitant to share it,” he explains in a BBC Radio 4 interview, “but I think Chrissy was really right. Way more people than anybody realizes go through this and they think they are alone.

“It was a really powerful, wise decision by Chrissy to share it.”

Legend says that some of the songs he has written since are about coping with loss and grief, “when you feel broken”, adding: “There’s no real comfort and you’re always going to feel that loss. It kind of spreads over time, so it doesn’t feel as heavy, but you’ll never forget it.”

Legend, who is presenter Lauren Laverne’s guest on Desert Island Discs on Sunday morning, might otherwise appear to have led a charmed life. At the age of 43, he is a rare recipient of not only two Emmy and 12 Grammy awards, but also an Oscar, as well as a Tony for his work on Broadway, an achievement that gives him the right to the prestigious acronym EGOT.

Musically talented from the age of four, when he began piano lessons in his hometown of Springfield, Ohio, Legend was also a gifted scholar who turned down a place at Harvard at 16 to become a student at the University of Pennsylvania, before then briefly becoming a high-flying management consultant, immediately earning more than his father’s salary.

His switch back to music soon resulted in a stellar solo career, following early work with Kanye West. In 2021, he was invited to play at the inauguration of Joe Biden.

But Legend, who was born John Stephens to working-class parents, tells Laverne his life has not been without troubles. Not only did he and Teigen lose a baby, he was also estranged from his mother, Phyllis, in his teens. The leader of the local church choir, she had become deeply depressed after the death of her own mother and descended into mental ill health and drug abuse.

“She fell out of our lives for about a decade. It was my entire adolescence into my early adulthood,” says Legend. A seamstress as well as a singer, his mother had home-schooled the young Legend and prioritized his religious education.

“It’s still emotional when I talk to my mother about it, because she feels such regret for being gone all that time,” the singer admits, remembering how hard it was for his siblings and his factory worker father, Ronald, while she was absent .

“During that decade she was gone from our lives. We had to figure things out.”

Legend also explains his “quite presumptuous” invented stage name. When friends started to call him “legend” because they felt his voice was channeling the great soul singers, I decided to run with it.

“You know what? Who knows what’s going to happen with my career but I’m going into it with the faith in myself and the belief in myself that it is going to work out,” he said. “And I’m going to try to live up to this name.”

Unbreakable Nick Kyrgios thunders into Citi Open final after defeating Mikael Ymer | Sport

Nick Kyrgios is “super excited” after continuing his career-best season by powering into the final of the Citi Open in Washington.

Backing up from his gruelling tournament workload so far – the Australian maverick finished off Reilly Opelka in their round of 16 clash on Friday then saved five match points in an epic quarter-final win over Frances Tiafoe yesterday – Kyrgios calmly dealt with Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in straight sets to swagger into another decider.

Kyrgios produced another imperious serving display to beat the 23-year-old Ymer 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in what was the Wimbledon runner-up’s fifth semi-final appearance from his past six events. Only an abdominal strain in Mallorca tarnished the impressive streak.

Yet to be broken all week in the American capital, Kyrgios didn’t face a solitary break point against Ymer, who had ousted former world No 1 Andy Murray in the first round. Ever the showman, Kyrgios brought up set point in the opener with his 80th ace of the tournament and sealed the set with a lovely serve-volley play and backhand flick overhead winner.

The second set also provided a serving duel but the Swede was always going to come out second best against Kyrgios in this type of mood as the Australian reeled off the last three games to prevail in one hour, 34 minutes.

Kyrgios hadn’t made a final for three years but now he’s reached two in less than a month, including his breakout run to his maiden grand slam title match at Wimbledon. That four-set defeat to Djokovic at the All England Club remains the 27-year-old’s only loss in his past 11 matches since mid-June.

“Honestly I didn’t play anywhere near my best tennis today,” Kyrgios said after the match. “The past couple of matches I’ve been on paper, rankings-wise the underdog, but today I definitely felt like the favourite. I served pretty solid. Obviously my winning percentage behind my first serve would have been high, but from the back of the court I didn’t play well at all.

“The difference was he stands on the fast and he makes you play that extra ball. He’s an incredible athlete and I really was n’t expecting him to be that fast, ”Kyrgios said of his rival. “Maybe next time I might have a couple different tactics when I play him, maybe not to try and rally him out, maybe come forward a little bit more. But it was a tough-fought semi-final. I’m just happy to be in another ending.

Kyrgios only hit 10 aces against Ymer, compared with the 35 thunderbolts he sat down against Tiafoe in their quarter-final epic, but it was good enough for the victory. “I didn’t get to sleep until 4.50am. I had so much adrenaline,” Kyrgios grinned. “I ate some dinner, got some treatment, my body was so sore after last night.

“It was an epic battle (against Tiafoe). I didn’t really do much today and I felt like my energy was a little flat today early on,” the kid from Canberra shrugged. “It’s understandable – I’m only human – but my adrenaline for the final is going to be right there. I’m super excited for it.”

Had the ATP not stripped Wimbledon of rankings points in objection to the All England Club’s banning of Russian and Belarusian players because of the invasion of Ukraine, Kyrgios would have regained his place in the world’s top 15. Instead he remains at No 63 and continues to make a mockery of the men’s rankings, which ridiculously also have Djokovic at world No 6, the Serbian superstar’s lowest position in 15 years.

Kyrgios’s run in Washington guarantees the 27-year-old’s rise to at least No 42 in the world and he’s projected to climb to 37th if he lands a seventh pro title. And with big events coming up in Montreal and Cincinnati, Kyrgios is on track to secure an all-important seeding for the US Open starting on August 29 in New York.

The most recent of Kyrgios’s ATP titles came here in Washington in 2019 and he’ll be hoping to snare another when he plays either Russian top seed Andrey Rublev or Japanese left-hander Yoshihito Nishioka in what will be his 11th career final.

Suspect in Ohio shootings that left 4 dead captured in Kansas

A man wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of four people in an Ohio neighborhood on Friday has been captured in Kansas, authorities announced Saturday.

Police in Montgomery County’s Butler Township, north of Dayton, said officers were called to the area shortly before noon Friday on a report of shots fired. Butler Township Police Chief John Porter said four victims with gunshot wounds were found at “multiple crime scenes” and all were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they were seeking 39-year-old Stephen Marlow, who was believed to have fled the area in a white 2007 Ford Edge. The FBI placed Marlow on its Most Wanted list early Saturday, stating that he has ties to Indianapolis, Chicago, and Lexington, Kentucky. His last known address for him was in Dayton, the FBI said.

Porter confirmed in a news briefing Saturday night that Marlow was captured in Lawrence, Kansas, which is about 600 miles west of Butler Township. He did not provide any details on how Marlow was apprehended.

“We do want to thank the general public for all their assistance,” Porter said.

The names of the victims haven’t yet been released and Porter said it wasn’t immediately clear what led to the shooting.

“We are working to determine if there is any reason for this horrible tragedy or if mental illness played any role,” Porter said in a news conference Friday. He called the shooting “the first violent crime in this neighborhood in recent memory.”

The Dayton Daily News reports that Marlow had gotten off probation in February on aggravated burglary and aggravated threatening charges stemming from a July 2019 incident in the Dayton suburb of Vandalia, according to Montgomery County court records.

Vandalia closed a number of public areas Saturday as a precaution following the shooting, including the recreation center, Cassel Hills golf course and pool and the city’s senior citizens center, the paper reported.

Court documents do not list an attorney representing Marlow; a message seeking comment was left Saturday at a number listed in his name from him.
