In New Zealand wages are growing. Will Australian workers’ pay packets get a bump?

The cost of living is soaring. Rocketing food prices and rising interest rates mean that without a substantial rise in wages, workers find themselves going backwards.

So are wage rises coming?

Ahead of official data out next week there are conflicting signals about what’s going on with wages.

going up

The good news, if you’re a worker, is that it’s a great time to be you.

Job vacancies are at a record high and there’s a massive shortage of labor (partly because so many migrants have gone home since the pandemic began and haven’t returned).

For advanced manufacturing company ANCA, that means paying people more.

Johanna Boland 1
Advanced manufacturing firm ANCA has been lifting wages to reward staff and lure new talent as they expand, says Johanna Boland the company’s strategy and communications manager.(ABC News: Simon Tucci)

“If we don’t have the right people, then we’re not going to be able to succeed in the marketplace. So we’ve got to pay what the market’s asking,” says the company’s strategy and community manager Johanna Boland.

“I think it’s not just inflation, it’s also been a really hot market for talent.”

ANCA is competing with tech companies, banks and start-ups for software engineers and designers with in-demand skills. It employs 1,300 people globally, most in Bayswater in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

The staff work in a variety of divisions, making things like complex robotic tools and components. Its machines are used by other companies in high-precision work, for example in cutting components used in mobile phones and medical equipment.

Early this year some staff started asking for more money to deal with rising living costs. The company did a “wide-scale analysis” looking at its entire staff and lifted wages for all.

The budget for wages has already changed since May and at the review in October it will be more again.

ANCA staff will get more money. Will you?

Kiwi wages lift

Australia’s unemployment rate is at its lowest level since 1974, at just 3.5 per cent. In New Zealand it’s down to 3.3 per cent – and it was even lower in the previous quarter.

(Even though it’s a blunt measure, with someone working an hour a fortnight considered “employed”, it is the measure generally used globally.)

That should mean higher demand for workers, leading to a boost in wages. In Australia that hasn’t happened yet, but New Zealand figures out this week show big lifts in how many workers are taking home in pay.

We have similar economies – and in New Zealand average hourly earnings are up to 7 per cent, year on year, for workers in the private sector, those not employed by governments. That’s almost catching up to the consumer price index (inflation) growing at 7.4 per cent.

Also, 26 per cent of jobs surveyed received a pay rise of more than 5 per cent, the highest proportion since 2008. And about two-thirds of jobs received an increase in ordinary-time wage rates in the past year –the highest level on record.

breaking history

Australians aren’t getting that kind of a boost. They’re going backwards.

The Reserve Bank of Australia see wages rising about 3.5 per cent next year, but that’s a significant pay cut in real terms. That’s because inflation is expected to peak at 7.75 per cent by the end of this year, be about 6.2 per cent by the middle of 2023 and 4.3 per cent by the end of next year.

So prices will keep rising faster than pay packets, meaning a cut in ‘real wages’ for millions of people.

There’s a simple answer on wages, according to Joseph Stiglitz, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Economics:

“They need to be higher.”

“The only thing Australians might feel good about is that they’re better than what’s happening in the United States, where things are devastating,” he said during a visit to talk to parliamentarians, trade unionists and business leaders.

Asset prices like houses and stocks have soared during the pandemic. A decade of low wage growth means people who get their income from wages are falling behind.

“The price of inequality is that low-paid workers are less productive. If we as a society reduce inequality, we’ll have a better performing economy. Better paid workers are less anxious… more satisfied, less likely to quit.”

Cost pressure

For many businesses, it’s not easy to raise wages.

Peter Burn, director of public policy at the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group), notes salaries are a big cost. But they’re just one, and many of the other major elements that go into running a business have already asked for more.

“Cost pressures are widespread,” he said.

Peter Burn
Dr Peter Burn of the Ai Group doesn’t see broad, large wage rises coming.(ABC News—Dan Irvine)

“There’s cost pressures coming from energy costs — electricity and gas, petrol — freight has been a major cost increase for a lot of businesses. The prices of building materials have risen very sharply, digital equipment [too]. They’re the big ones we’ve been hearing about.”

Dr Burn says these costs are particularly strong, but they also flip what’s become normal.

“We’ve become used to low or even falling prices in recent years. So this is a sudden reversal of what we’ve become used to,” he said.

He sees “big gaps” in the wages picture. There are aggregates (for everyone) of around 2.5 per cent growth, but certain industries and roles are seeing sharp wage rises.

“But what we’re hearing from particular businesses is they’re increasing the wages, they’ve got to pay (bigger) salaries attract particular staff,” he says, pointing to tech and project management as key fields enjoying substantial leaps in salary .

That’s putting wage pressure on businesses those business, he adds.

“But as a general rule across the economy, wage pressures are not high.”

Job seeking

Australia’s largest job site is a gold mine of information about what’s happening with wages. Or it could be.

“So most employers don’t put the salary on the job ad,” advises Kendra Banks, managing director of Seek. “This is something we do advise employers to think about more carefully. If the salary is good, if they think it’s above average, it will certainly attract more applicants.”

Why don’t they – especially in a tight labor market where people are looking to make more money to meet the cost of living? Because they cause chaos in their workplaces.

“It’s quite often in some organizations that newcomers will have different salary levels than the existing employees. So advertising that through the ad could create challenges internally for some companies or organisations,” she says.

Kendra Banks

This is like the so-called ‘loyalty premium’ paid by consumers. Long-term bank customers with a home loan, for example, are sometimes shocked to learn that people walking into the branch and taking out a mortgage are offered a better rate.

In jobs, too, there’s a benefit to switching.

“We see that through some of the ABS data that looks at wage changes for people who’ve moved employers and those who haven’t,” Ms Banks says.

“And the wage change for those who’ve moved employers is significantly higher than those who haven’t.”

With other costs rocketing, employers may be offering inducements that aren’t money.

“Participation in the labor market in Australia is already very, very high, so it may be that wage growth is not exactly what it takes (to lure workers),” she adds.

Perks like flexible working, the ability to work from home, to set your own hours and leave stronger entitlements may be areas “employers are leaning on more in order to attract the best candidates.”

Cost pressure

Switching employers might bring more money, but for many workers it’s not possible or desirable. They have to either push their boss for a bigger pay packet, or wait for external pressure to do it.

And that might not eat.

“For 10 years, we’ve been told that some Magic Wage Growth Fairy will come along and one day boost wages,” says an exasperated Richard Denniss, chief economist of the Australian Institute.

“The reason we have low wage growth is because employers are not offering decent wage rises.

“The only way that wages can grow in Australia is if employers pay their workers higher wages. And every employer, including the public sector is saying, ‘Oh, we can’t afford to offer high wage growth’.

“So unless lots of employers are offering wages that start with a 5 (per cent), then we’re not going to see average wage growth start with a 3.”

Data out on August 17 from the Australian Bureau of Statistics will let us know what’s happened to wages in the recent past. What happens in the future is up to workers, unions, bosses, governments and companies.

“The way a market is supposed to work is when something is scarce, the price goes up,” Dr Denniss says.

“That’s what’s happened with gas. But when it happens with labour, apparently there’s a problem.”

Q&A

Want to be in Blind date?

Show

Blind date is Saturday’s dating column: every week, two strangers are paired up for dinner and drinks, and then spill the beans to us, answering a set of questions. This runs, with a photograph we take of each dater before the date, in Saturday magazine (in the UK) and online at theguardian.com every Saturday. It’s been running since 2009 – you can read all about how we put it together here.

What questions will I be asked?
We ask about age, location, occupation, hobbies, interests and the type of person you are looking to meet. If you do not think these questions cover everything you would like to know, tell us what’s on your mind.

Can I choose who I match with?
No, it’s a blind date! But we do ask you a bit about your interests, preferences, etc – the more you tell us, the better the match is likely to be.

Can I pick the photograph?
No, but don’t worry: we’ll choose the nicest ones.

What personal details will appear?
Your first name, job and age.

How should I answer?
Honestly but respectfully. Be mindful of how it will read to your date, and that Blind date reaches a large audience, in print and online.

Will I see the other person’s answers?
No. We may edit yours and theirs for a range of reasons, including length, and we may ask you for more details.

Will you find me The One?
We’ll try! Marriage! Babies!

Can I do it in my hometown?
Only if it’s in the UK. Many of our applicants live in London, but we would love to hear from people living elsewhere.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Hockeyroos vs England final, Heartbreak for Australia

The Hockeyroos picked a bad time to start granting goals.

The Aussies have been denied gold at the Commonwealth Games after England came out firing in the final on Monday morning (AEST).

The tough loss extends the Hockeyroos’ eight-year drought in major championships.

The Hockeyroos have not won a Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games or World Cup since the Glasgow Games in 2014.

It is back-to-back silver medals for the Aussies after New Zealand also stunned them in the final four years ago.

It was a heartbreaking result for the Hockeyroos, who fought so bravely against a wild home crowd in Birmingham.

In the end, they were left to rue a second quarter where England scored two crucial goals. That was enough for England to win 2-1, relegating the Aussies to the silver medal.

It was the first time England has ever won hockey gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Former Hockeyroos star Georgie Parker said Australia just didn’t have the firepower up front to get back into the contest after they fell behind.

“Australia were just a little bit off it today,” she said in commentary on Channel 7.

“Besides our first opening matches it has been hard for us to score. We’ve had just four goals in the last three matches. And that was the thing that’s happened here. Australia not able to get the win today, but it was not without effort.”

The Hockeyroos were on the back foot in the first quarter and had to defend three consecutive corners to keep the scores locked at 0-0 at quarter-time.

However, the Aussies finally conceded — for the first time in the entire tournament — when Holly Hunt popped up unmarked in the circle and tapped in a goal.

England had a second just a few minutes later when Tess Howard deflected a shot at close range. The goal came after Penny Squibb failed to track an England runner, allowing the opposition to get inside the circle.

It was very nearly game over in the third quarter when England hit the post from a penalty corner, but Australia still had a heartbeat heading into the fourth quarter trailing 2-0.

The Hockeyroos’ moment arrived with five minutes to go when they earned a penalty corner, but there was simply no getting past England keeper Madeleine Hinch.

They were doing everything they could and started improvising attacking moves to try and unsettle the English defence. Nothing worked.

“It’s chaos. Absolute chaos,” Parker said.

“I like that they are doing a variation there. Straight penalties haven’t gone to plan. They just have not been able to score them. They’re working around and it looks like a bunch of tired girls there.”

Australia scored a late consolation goal through Rosie Malone with 19 seconds remaining, but it was not enough to make England nervous before the final whistle was blown.

The Aussies had moved through to the final after a blockbuster semi-final win over India that exploded in controversy.

Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series – 4 Essential Beginners Tips

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series - 4 essential beginners tipsKlonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series bundles the original and sequel into one remastered package. Whether you’re new to the 2.5D platformer, returning after many years, or a bit rusty on the basics, we have four beginner tips for you. Equip yourself with these tips, and you’ll be on your way to defeating Ghadeus, the king of Sorrow and any bouncing bad guy who gets in your way.

Know Your Enemy

The ancient Chinese general Sun Zhu once wrote, “know thy enemy, and know yourself”. While Klonoa doesn’t require such leaps of military genius, having a firm grasp of the various enemy types will stand you in good stead, especially if you’re attempting to speed run visions (levels). Each buoyant enemy holds valuable properties to help you scale heights and dangerous drops. In contrast, others can open paths yet unexplored with a bang! Knowing how to use these creatures to your advantage will also help unlock many collectables that require extra effort.

In Klonoa, the enemy aren't there to simply be beating. They are a thing to be used to your advantage

In Klonoa, the enemy aren’t there to simply be beating. They are a thing to be used to your advantage.

The common enemy is the round creatures that’ll walk forward and backwards. These aren’t dangerous unless they have armor plating. You’ll want to use these guys to jump high for gems and collectables or as cannonballs to wipe out other enemies. Often you’ll have to jump to much higher ledges, and this is where the second enemy type comes in. These green birds fly upwards and downwards in formation, so time your jump carefully. Lastly, dog-like bombs can blast blockages, but be careful! Some have shorter fuses than others. You’ll encounter other creatures, but their usage is pretty apparent when you meet them.

Popping The Clock

You’ll come across large red clocks floating in bubbles at each level. These are not to be ignored and will make your experience much smoother. Pop these bubbles with an enemy or wind bullet, and your current progress will be saved. You will die a lot in Klonoa, whether through ill-timed jumps, eagerness to rush through a level or allowing an enemy to get too close, so this checkpoint system is invaluable.

If you see a clock, pop it! Checkpoints will help you avoid redoing difficult platforming sections

If you see a clock, pop it! Checkpoints will help you avoid redoing difficult platforming sections.

Be warned, however. Popping these clocks will have no impact if you exit the level. You’ll be sent back to the start if you rage quit because of a specific section’s difficulty. While neither game’s numerous levels aren’t tricky per-say, extra vision in Klonoa: Road To Phantomile and Chamber o’ Horror/Chamber o’ Fun in Klonoa 2 is very difficult. If you’re a completionist, you’ll have to beat all three, so if you see a clock, pop it and move on with the mission. Just don’t rage quit.

Don’t Ignore Collectibles

Klonoa is a hero, and what do heroes do? Save people! Specifically, in the first game, many citizens of the world have been hidden in bubbles that Klonoa must pop to liberate. These trapped citizens act as collectables, all of which must be found for total completion and the extra vision upon finishing the game. Luckily, there’s no need to get all these collectables in one go. Finish the main narrative, popping those you see and returning to the levels as often as you like once the credits roll.

Tracking down all collectibles will open extra visions that'll put your skill to the test

Tracking down all collectibles will open extra visions that’ll put your skill to the test.

Klonoa 2 takes a different path, but the goal and outcome are the same. A character called Moomet requires you to collect a total of twelve dolls, of which pieces can be found Strawen throughout almost every level. Returning six dolls will unlock a Chamber O’ Fun extra level. Bring all twelve back, and the last and most challenging, Chamber O’ Horror, will open. These two levels will put your platforming skills to the test.

Time Your Jumps

Knowing how and when to jump is critical in all platform games, and Klonoa is no different. Much of your time is spent shooting wind bullets to grab enemies and using them to propel yourself to the next platform. Sometimes you’ll have to chain together jumps, catching and jumping multiple times to reach higher places. These sections can be tricky, especially in later levels. The sequel adds snowboarding levels that demand precision jumps while staying on the path, but, thankfully, you also get checkpoints.

Catching some air!

Catching some air!

These snowboarding sections make for a refreshing change of pace from what is a homogenous experience throughout both games. Boss fights also take advantage of these sections, making things feel fresh, despite using the exact same method of defeating the boss as you would on foot. There are boarding levels late in Klonoa 2 that require near pinpoint accuracy or risk falling into the endless void. Ultimately, all this comes down to repetition and practice. Thank god for those checkpoint clocks mentioned above, huh?

Conclusion

I sincerely hope that these Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series beginners tips give you some idea of how to hit the ground running through the worlds of Phantomile and Lunatea. Both games still hold up well, but the extra lick of paint will surely help welcome new players and those looking for a dose of nostalgia.

Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series is available on PS5/4, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.

Judge BANS release of ‘graphic’ Naomi Judd suicide photos as it would cause family ‘pain’

A judge has sealed the release of Naomi Judd’s ‘graphic’ suicide photos after her daughters Ashley, Wynonna, and her widower, Larry Strickland, said making the sheriff’s records available would cause them ‘pain.’

The country superstar died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 2022 at the age of 76 – and now her family has filed for injunctive relief in Williamson County, Tennessee, to keep the investigation records into her death closed.

This follows revelations that Ashley, 54, and Wynonna, 58 – the other half of singing duo The Judds – were not included in their mother’s will after she passed away earlier this year.

The temporary order to ban the ‘graphic’ records, including photos, videos, and written documents, being put on public record, was granted on Tuesday.

According to documents seen by Fox News, the records ‘include photographs, video recordings, audio recordings, and written reports.’

But some of these records collected when investigating her death ‘contain Mrs. Judd depicted in a graphic manner.’

The order stated that if the records surrounding the country singer’s death were made public, her family would ‘suffer irreparable harm in the form of emotional distress, pain and mental anguish.’

It noted that the ‘entire family’ would feel pain for ‘years to come’ if the information was put on public record.

The order will be discussed in an evidentiary hearing on September 12.

Two weeks before her shocking death, Naomi stood on stage with Wynonna in a surprise reunion at the Country Music Awards in April 2022.

They sang a powerful song of reconciliation, written by Naomi – ‘Love Can Build A Bridge’ in what was her last public appearance before her suicide.

The Judds were the most successful country singers of the 80s, winning five Grammys, nine CMAs, and selling 20 million records.

This comes after details of Naomi’s will were recently brought to the surface – as the late country singer named her husband, Larry, as executor of her $25million fortune.

And according to sources, it caused discontent among the family.

Elder daughter Wynonna, 58, plans to contest her mother’s will, which made no provision for her or her half-sister Ashley, 54.

Wynonna’s decision to push back at her mother’s wishes was driven by a deep-seated sense of injustice and simmering discord that has plagued the family for decades.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, the source revealed that Ashley has sided with Strickland over her mother’s decision.

Country singer Naomi Judd left her two daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, out her will and instead appointed Larry Strickland, her husband of 33 years, as executor of her estate

Larry Strickland will have 'full authority and discretion' over Naomi Judd's assets 'without the approval of any court'

Elder daughter Wynonna, 58, is now grappling with her mother’s decision to exclude her from her will and instead leave her $25million fortune to husband Larry Strickland – despite building a successful music career together

‘Ashley Judd has no problem with her late mother Naomi leaving her entire $25million fortune to her second husband Larry Strickland,’ the insider said.

‘With Ashley it’s never really been about the money. She has a net worth of some $14million but she lives a relatively simple life.’

In contrast, the source added, the ‘finances are near and dear,’ to Wynonna, who has long had a troubled relationship with money, spending habits, and with her mother whom she called, ‘my beloved enemy.’

In the immediate aftermath of their mother’s death Ashley and Wynonna supported each other in their loss, attending her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, May 1, the day after their mother’s suicide.

But the sisters’ united front was allegedly short-lived. The source said, ‘[At first] Ashley and Wynonna really leaned on each other in their grief over Naomi’s death, but you knew it was only a matter of time before their ages-old sisterly issues would resurface.’

According to insiders, Wynonna feels entitled to a 'piece of the pie' as the 'lead singer' of The Judds and for taking Naomi from working as a nurse to being a star

The Judds at the Country Music Awards in 1985

According to insiders, Wynonna feels entitled to a ‘piece of the pie’ as the ‘lead singer’ of The Judds and for taking Naomi from working as a nurse in Nashville to being a global star

Naomi had a tumultuous upbringing – and in part she attributed her depression to the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of an uncle when she was just three.

When she was 22, Naomi was raped and beaten by an ex-boyfriend, a trauma that saw her flee Los Angeles to rural Kentucky, where she lived with her children on welfare while training to become a nurse.

They lived in a home with no electricity, phone, television or indoor plumbing.

Naomi moved to Nashville when she qualified and ultimately became head nurse in an intensive care unit.

It was there that she learned a patient’s father was in the music industry. She made a tape of herself singing with Wynonna, gave it to him and ‘The Judds’ career in music was launched.

On May 29, one month after her mother’s death, Wynonna wrote an emotional Instagram post in which she spoke of her unbearable grief and her fear that she would never be able to ‘surrender to the truth’ of the way her mother left this life.

She wrote about ‘personal healing,’ her sense of being ‘helpless’ and the few things she knew in the face of such despair and drama.

She said she would continue to fight for her faith, herself and her family, to continue to ‘show up & sing.’

And she vowed to ‘break the cycle’ of addiction and dysfunction that has stalked the Judd women and, with Grace’s incarceration, threatens to tumble into yet another generation.

The Batgirl you’ll never see: why some films disappear for ever | batgirl

There was a time when being sent straight to video was about the most ignoble fate a would-be movie blockbuster could suffer: the vision of its makers confined to the dimensions of a television screen, never to be enjoyed by more than a sofa-full of people in one sitting. In the modern age, that fate became less tangible still: demoted to streaming, many good films even now float in a strange digital purgatory, sometimes connecting with sizeable audiences, yet rarely acquiring the tangible cultural currency of a hit in cinemas.

Still, such films-like Preyfor example, a surprisingly good predator prequel that skipped cinemas to premiere last week on Disney Plus – can at least be seen, and widely so, by those inclined. Right about now, the creative team behind Warner Bros’ addled comic-book film batgirl would gladly accept that outcome, after being dealt a far rarer and more egregious humiliation. Last week, it was announced that the near-complete film, having already racked up a budget of $90m, would not be released at all – not even on the Warner-owned streaming service HBO Max.

Also scrapped in the same announcement was the streaming-oriented animated Scooby-Doo prequel Scooby!: Holiday Haunting, though that unsurprisingly generated fewer headlines: in this age of superhero saturation, the industry was immediately abuzz with questions about how Batgirl’s wings could have been so brutally clipped. “Just how bad is it?” people asked, as reports of chilly test-screening reactions were dredged up. trade rag the wrapping reported that Warner’s new management team, led by CEO David Zaslav, felt the film “simply didn’t work”: once conceived for HBO Max, then lined up for theatrical distribution, it was allegedly felt that the Batman spin-off didn’t have the event-movie heft the studio required of its DC Comics properties.

Others suggested the issue wasn’t one of quality but cold hard numbers, which weren’t tracking well enough to justify the expense of marketing and releasing the film at any level: taking a tax write-down on batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunting was, reported Variety, seen as the safest way to recover their costs. “We are incredibly grateful to the film-makers and their respective casts and hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future,” read the studio’s bland statement, though you have to wonder why the talent involved would follow up on that tentative invitation.

Batgirl’s directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah – a flashy Belgian-Moroccan duo who had a 2020 smash with bad boys for Lifeand whose far smaller-scale arthouse provocation Rebel premiered at Cannes in the spring – have been vocal in their blindsided dismay; the film’s Latina star, Leslie Grace, has limited herself to thanking her fans and collaborators. Industry watchdogs, meanwhile, wonder whether the studio’s accounting gambit is worth the ugly optics of junking a superhero film made and headed by people of color. El Arbi, Fallah and Grace can’t even count themselves in especially distinguished or plentiful company: the list of major films produced but never released in any capacity is not a long one.

It is not the first superhero property, however, to be barred from release. In 1993, Hollywood B-movie master Roger Corman helped produce a bargain-basement adaptation of another Marvel comic, Fantastic Four – a world apart from the vast, corporate Marvel machines filling multiplexes today. Made on a budget of $1m with a no-name cast, it was scheduled to premiere in 1994 and even had a trailer go out – before the studio abruptly canceled all plans to screen it publicly and confiscated the negatives. The late Marvel chief Stan Lee fed rumors that a release was never planned, and the film was made solely for the purposes of retaining the rights to the property; Corman has insisted otherwise. Albeit at a very different price point from batgirlit seems the film was also ultimately scuppered in the name of bookkeeping, but bootleg leaks readily available on YouTube indicate that no great art was lost in the process.

Sometimes, a perfectly seaworthy film is simply sunk by the individuals involved. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, many have had to change course because of toxic talent; some have given up entirely. gore, a Gore Vidal biopic shot in 2017 with Kevin Spacey in the lead, was in post-production when Netflix pulled the plug on the entire project. (Spacey’s role in the expensive Ridley Scott drama All the Money in the Worldon the other hand, was small enough to make a reshoot with a recast Christopher Plummer viable.)

Very occasionally, a film can be scotched even after it’s out in the world: Louis CK’s I Love You, Daddy, a dark comedy hinging on a teenage girl’s seduction by a sixtysomething film-maker, had premiered, to some warm reviews at the 2017 Toronto film festival, when the indie distributor the Orchard dropped it a week before its scheduled cinema release, as sexual misconduct allegations against its director-star emerged. Louis CK bought back the distribution rights. Rose Byrne, one of its stars, stated, “It’ll be a while before the film can be seen, and I think that’s right” – though such sentiments didn’t stop the film popping up on torrent sites.

Here in the UK, the ill-fated hippie hippie shake has become the ultimate cautionary tale for the vagaries of British film financing and production. Intended as a jaunty trip through the radical magazine publishing scene of the swinging 60s, the film was first announced in 1998 by Working Title Films – then in their post-Four Weddings and a Funeral glory days – before cycling through a procession of directors and additional writers; the cameras finally rolled in 2007 under director Beeban Kidron, with Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller heading the cast. Nearly two years later, Kidron quit during post-production; a scheduled 2010 release date came and went before Working Title announced it would be shelved for ever. Reports vary among the few who have seen it as to how much of a misfire it is. But how the film, which was never going to be a blockbuster, could warrant such veil-drawing treatment remains an industry mystery.

If it’s hard to see on paper how hippie hippie shake could be unreleasable, the same can’t be said for The Day the Clown Cried, for decades regarded with morbid fascination as a kind of white whale of old-guard cinema. The European-produced 1972 Holocaust drama was written and directed by goofball comic Jerry Lewis, who also stars as a German circus clown imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp and charged with leading children into the gas chambers. Aghast testimonies from the few who saw a rough cut at the time suggest it was every bit as misguided as it sounds; Lewis himself later admitted to being “embarrassed at [his] poor work”. In a rare case of a film being suspended by its own maker rather than by studio enforcement, it has been kept under lock and key for half a century, though Lewis donated the negative to the Library of Congress in 2015, two years before his death , requesting that it not be shown for at least a decade.

Will we eventually see the wreckage? Films buffs should be careful what they wish for. More often than not, even the most cursed productions eventually find their way to the light, and it is rarely for the best. Directed but disowned by David O Russell, the political satire nailed had a troubled, disrupted shoot that eventually ran aground in 2008, leading to years of financial disputes. In 2014, an independent distributor bought it from its bankrupted studio, cobbled together a final cut and released it as Accidental Love, directed by one “Stephen Greene”; the result was not a film anyone would want their real name attached to.

The glowing exception, meanwhile, is Kenneth Lonergan’s sprawling, knotty, rather magnificent Manhattan morality drama margaret, which sat in legal limbo for six years – with the director and studio Fox Searchlight locked in tortuous disagreement over a lengthy final cut – before it was finally freed in 2011, to critical acclaim that it has only escalated over the years. At present, it seems unlikely that batgirl – or, less likely still, Scoob!: Holiday Haunting – is in line for quite such a redemption. But such fairytales keep hope in a cutthroat industry alive.

Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden

Washington— The Senate on Sunday passed Democrats’ sweeping economy package designed to combat climate change, address health care costs and raise taxes on large corporations, marking a crucial achievement for President Biden and his party as they look to maintain their hold on Congress in the November midterm elections.

The plan, called the Inflation Reduction Act, cleared the upper chamber by a vote of 51 to 50 along party lines, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided Senate. Democrats used a fast-track legislative process known as reconciliation to pass the measure in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans.

“It’s been a long, tough and winding road but at last, at last, we have arrived,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor as members prepared to vote for final passage. “Today, after more than a year of hard work, the Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation Reduction Act will endure as one of the defining legislative feats of the 21st century.”

The vote came after a marathon session that lasted through the night and into Sunday afternoon, with Democrats breaking into applause as members cast their final votes. In a process known as a “vote-a-rama,” Republicans offered a slew of amendments that Democrats successfully swatted down over nearly 16 hours of debate.

GOP senators did manage to block a provision that would have capped the price of insulin at $35 a month for those covered under private health care plans. Democrats needed 60 votes to waive reconciliation rules and keep that part of the bill, but it failed 57 to 43, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in support of the measure.

House Democratic leaders announced last week the lower chamber will return from its month-long recess on Friday to take up the legislation, which is expected to pass.

Mr. Biden praised Senate Democrats for passing the plan and acknowledged it required “many compromises.” He urged the House to swiftly approve the bill.

“Today, Senate Democrats sided with American families over special interests, voting to lower the cost of prescription drugs, health insurance, and everyday energy costs and reduce the deficit, while making the wealthiest corporations finally pay their fair share,” the president said in to statement. “I ran for president promising to make government work for working families again, and that is what this bill does — period.”

The package is the culmination of months of negotiations over Mr. Biden’s domestic policy agenda, which at times appeared to be on life support but was revived late last month with the surprise announcement of an agreement between Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia.

While the legislation is much more narrow than the sprawling $3.5 trillion proposal put forth by Mr. Biden last year, the tailored package had the backing of Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat from Arizona whose support was crucial.

Still, Democrats praise the plan as their answer to addressing rising consumer prices and for its nearly $400 billion investment in fighting climate change, the largest ever. The package allows Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, a key Democratic priority that is expected to save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next 10 years. It also extends enhanced health insurance subsidies that were set to expire at the end of the year, and imposes a 15% minimum tax on most corporations that make more than $1 billion each year.

The corporate tax provision emerged as a point of contention as senators neared a final vote on Sunday. Seven Democratic senators — Sinema, Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, Catherine Cortez Masto, Maggie Hassan, Mark Kelly and Jacky Rosen — joined Republicans in backing an amendment put forward by GOP Sen. John Thune of South Dakota exempts some firms with private equity backing from the 15% minimum corporate tax rate. That amendment passed 57 to 43.

To boost clean energy, the measure includes tax credits for buying electric vehicles and manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines. It also provides rebates for consumers who buy energy efficient appliances and provides $4 billion for drought relief.

Schumer lauded the bill as the “boldest climate package” in US history, and called it a “game-changer” and “turning point.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.

One piece of Democrats’ drug-pricing plan — imposing penalties on drug manufacturers that raised prices beyond inflation on private insurers — was removed after it was reviewed by Senate parliamentarian Elizbeth MacDonough. Her approval of the rest of the package, however, cleared the way for the upper chamber to move forward with its consideration of the bill.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation will cut the deficit by $102 billion over the next 10 years. Republicans, though, argued the plan will have little impact on inflation and instead raise taxes while leading to job losses.

in an interview with “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, claimed Democrats’ drug pricing plan will harm seniors, while the tax component will increase taxes on Americans.

“Why would you be increasing the cost of government? We’re increasing taxes,” he said.
