It reaches the $US763.7 million free cashflow figure by taking net cash provided by operating activities of $US883.5 million and subtracting capital expenditure on property and equipment of $US70.6 million, alongside payments of lease obligations of $US49.1 million.
As an unofficial accounting method, Atlassian’s free cashflow also excludes other relatively minor expenses booked through its cashflow statement such as investment purchases, purchases of intangible assets, interest paid, and payment of deferred consideration.
Still, it’s correct to say that Atlassian is positive cashflow and not really losing money.
Non-cash expenses
However, the lion’s share of the discrepancy between the accounting loss and free cashflow generation is explained by about $US1.1 billion in non-cash expenses.
Free cashflow excludes $US707.1 million in share-based payment expenses accrued over the year and $US434.3 million in writedowns to the fair value of debt for equity notes.
How investors should treat share-based compensation is a divisive topic.
For Atlassian, paying your staff $US707.1 million in shares to save on cash makes a hell of a lot of sense. It also works perfectly when the market ignores the dilution, as well-paid, aligned staff grow the business and investors bid the stock higher in response.
As the shares rise the company can issue them with less dilution and save more cash on salaries amid a battle to recruit the best tech talent.
However, this trick only works effectively on the assumption your shares maintain an upward trajectory over the long term.
In theory, if Atlassian faced competition and the share price tanked its staff may demand cash instead of shares meaning its free cashflow could turn negative.
It also has goodwill on its balance sheet of $US732.6 million making up about 22 per cent of total assets of $US3.4 billion. Excess goodwill is often a sign a company needs to write down the value of its acquisitions. It has taken advantage of its richly valued scrip to make at least 18 acquisitions including Trello for $US425 million, with amortization expense on acquired intangible assets also backed out of its free cashflow figure at $US32.4 million.
Over the financial year, it also repaid $US1.55 billion in debt in exchangeable senior notes and took on another $US1 billion of bank debt.
The operating cashflow of $US883.5 million and $US1 billion of new bank debt helping available cash to actually finish up $459.4 million for the year to $US1.4 billion.
So for tech investors, Atlassian ticks the boxes.
It’s founder-led, growing quickly, generates plenty of recurring sales on high software margins, and boasts a decent balance sheet. But the jury is out on valuation.
At $US268.59 it trades on 22.5 times annualized sales and 89 times Atlassian’s definition of free cashflow in financial 2022. This means today’s buyers must rely on very strong compound growth rates over the next decade to earn a return, with the market darling likely to remain volatile given its remuneration model.

Zellweger may have shocked some readers when she admitted that she couldn’t wait to turn 50, which she saw as an improvement over her 20s.
‘Turning 50 felt like a whole new beginning without the nonsense, the point where you can stop listening to all those voices in your head and all those expectations and projections people have of you and become more authentically yourself,’ she admitted.
‘Like, good luck all you suckers out there because you’ve got to survive a lot to get to my age, and I’ve earned my power and voice.’
But the conversation turned to the actress’ appearance, particularly circa the mid-2010s, when she was rumored to have had cosmetic surgery that changed the appearance of her famously squinty eyes.

GREENSBORO, NC – Joohyung “Tom” Kim was playing a practice round with Si Woo Kim on Wednesday at St. Andrews before The 150th Open Championship last month when he realized Trevor Immelman was following them.
The 20-year-old was nervous. He’d watched the Presidents Cup ever since his father, a golf pro from Korea, had first put a club in his hands at age 5. He knew Immelman was this year’s International captain, and he’d love nothing more than to play for him in next month’s matches at Quail Hollow.
“It was actually pretty nerve wracking for me for him to walk a couple holes,” Kim said with a grin. “Obviously you don’t want to shank one in front of your future captain, potentially.”
Not to worry. Kim recalls hitting the ball well during that practice round. And besides, Immelman had the young man who won the Wyndham Championship on Sunday on his radar long before that day.
One of his close friends, renowned teaching pro Claude Harmon III, had texted Immelman to tell him about the affable young man who is known as Tom because he loved the TV show “Thomas the Tank Engine” growing up. Seems Harmon had been out with one of his students who played with Kim, and he came away impressed.
“You’ve got to check this kid out,” Harmon told Immelman. “And so, from that moment on I started paying attention, because Claude is not only a great friend, but he’s somebody who’s been around the game his whole life. So, I trust his eye when it comes to spotting talent.
Kim did not disappoint. He finished third at the Genesis Scottish Open and seventh at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic before completing an improbable run from a quadruple bogey on his first hole at Sedgefield Country Club to his first PGA TOUR victory on Sunday.
“Isn’t it nuts?” Immelman said. “It’s crazy to even think about the fact that John Huh shoots 61 on Thursday morning and Tom starts his round with the quad. So he’s 14 behind after his first hole. … It just goes to show how brilliantly he’s played.”
“Hopefully, this gives me a close chance to make that team,” grinned the effervescent Kim, who moved to No. 34 in the FedExCup and 21st in the world.
Could be. Immelman was in the broadcast booth for GOLF Channel on Sunday, and he liked what he saw before he had to get on the road to Charlotte to catch a flight home to Orlando. Not only was Kim playing well, but Sungjae Im, a mainstay of International Teams past who ranks third in the standings, was in the mix as well, eventually finishing tied for a second.
Im, for his part, was also impressed by Kim’s performance.
“He’s a great kid and to come out here and to win on TOUR as a non-member and secure your card is really not an easy task, and he achieved that,” he said through an interpreter. “I’m really proud of him.”
Immelman said he’s enjoyed getting to know Kim, who has lived in Korea, Australia, China, the Philippines and Thailand, and speaks three languages. The two texts frequently, including on Saturday night, just as Immelman does with about 25 prospective International Team members as he tries to build a cohesive unit to take on the Americans Sept. 22-25 in Charlotte.
“He’s having a blast,” Immelman said. “He really is. He loves being out on the PGA TOUR. He told me it’s everything that he always dreamed of. He always wanted to play on the PGA TOUR, and everything is still new and fresh to him.
“And in a lot of ways, it’s kind of like he’s having to pinch himself. … He’s got this enthusiasm that is palpable.”
Immelman calls Kim, who became fully exempt on TOUR with Sunday’s victory, the “real deal.” And he sees a long future for Kim – who thrived on the support of the fans at Sedgefield yelling “Let’s go, Tom” – in the Presidents Cup.
“I’ll use Adam Scott as a role model, who in all likelihood will make our team as well and play his 10th Presidents Cup,” Immelman said. “He’s just turned 42. So, he can use Adam Scott as a role model and, and say to himself, man, I could be playing in the Presidents Cup for the next two decades.
“And by the end of it, in the next 10 years, he has an opportunity to even be one of the leaders of the team and in all likelihood he will be. So, it’s extremely exciting for me. I go back to the squad mentality of not just for this Presidents Cup, but for Royal Montreal and for Chicago and back to Royal Melbourne.
“The future is bright for us because we have all of this talent coming through from all around the world.”
A woman whose husband took his own life after a decade of serving in the Air Force has described the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as “cruel” and “inhumane”.

Madonna Paul’s husband Michael died in 2004 after struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mental health issues.
Ms Paul told the Hobart sitting of the Royal Commission into Defense and Veteran Suicide that early in their marriage, Mr Paul was a “really easy-going guy” who “just loved life”.
She said his behavior changed after raising concerns with his superiors at the Swartz Barracks in Queensland about the safety of Nomad Aircraft, which had been nicknamed “Widowmaker”.
“Eventually he was called in and was told to shut up … do your job,” she said.
In 1991, one of the Nomad Aircraft crashed, killing all four crew members — an incident his wife said would change his life forever.
Ms Paul told the commission she was not aware of any debriefing or any critical incident discussions being offered in the wake of the crash.
“He would come home from work and sit in the dark,” she said.
“His moods became very erratic, there was some aggression.”
Eventually, the couple was offered a social worker at the Air Force Base in Townsville.
“And I never got to meet her, but Michael did. And he told me that she had said that we just have marriage problems,” Ms Paul said.
“I was just shocked because I knew that before. And I never did. I’d never met her. So she’d made a call without talking to me.
“I commenced marriage counselling, thinking that was the issue, that obviously somebody’s told him that’s the issue, but it wasn’t.”
Light aircraft trip in storm triggered ‘complete breakdown’
The commission heard that after being discharged from the Australian Army in 1994, Mr Paul was “relaxed for a bit” before having a “complete breakdown”.
“He was on his first light aircraft trip … when they hit a storm,” Ms Paul said.
“He called me when they landed and told me what had happened, and he was crying. And he said, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t get on these aircraft and keep doing this’.'”
The commission heard after a period of living rough, Mr Paul was eventually diagnosed with depression and received a white card for PTSD.
Struggling with their son’s attempt on his own life, Mr Paul was then prescribed medication by a psychiatrist.
“And when Michael was on [that] change of medication, that’s when the moods would become very erratic,” Ms Paul said.
“So I was always adamant because I did have a power of attorney, with his physicians that he’d be hospitalized for that changed medication.
“Unfortunately, the week before he died, he was on changed medication. And the physician didn’t contact me to hospitalize him.”
Dealing with department deprived widow of ‘half-decent life’
Following Mr Paul’s death, Ms Paul struggled to access support from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), until she contacted the ABC’s 7:30 program.
“And within 24 hours [of the story airing]I had DVA calling me, people assigned to my case, and they awarded me a war widow’s pension,” she said.
She was given $130,000 in compensation from the DVA but said she has had around $220,000 deducted as part of her war widow payment.
“To find out, you know, I said to them, I think you’ve made an error because I’ve just done simple maths and I’ve already paid this. Why is this still being deducted?” she said.
“and [a woman from the DVA]she sort of scoffed, and said, ‘it’s perpetual, you will be doing this for the rest of your life’.”

Ms Paul said the experience of dealing with the DVA after her husband’s death nearly 20 years ago had deprived her of having a “half-decent life”.
“Because you’re living on next to nothing anyway, and trying to make everything ends meet, it’s stressful,” she said
“It just brings it all back up, and you have to go through it again, and tell the story again.
“I don’t understand the politics behind it, but it’s a very cruel and inhumane treatment.”
Ms Paul called for Australia to examine how other countries were helping veterans, including having services delivered by people with lived experience.
“I have suffered at the hands of DVA generational and systematic abuse, and it needs to stop,” she said.
“No-one knows what to say after a suicide. They do not know what to say. I mean, like, I can remember people saying time is the greatest healer.
“Honestly, time does not heal it. Having a great trauma specialist heals it.”
More support needed as personnel move out of service
National Mental Health Commissioner Alan Woodward told the hearings this morning that any government policy aimed at preventing suicide must be driven by those with lived experience.
“The quest for suicide prevention will be so much more effective if we listen and respond to the people we’re seeking to serve and support, than if we try to do it without those voices,” Mr Woodward said.
“This has been a problem in suicide prevention, where the input perhaps at times been dominated by those who do not have the lived experience perspective.”
Mr Woodward said a disproportionate number of Australian veterans were dying by suicide.

He told the commission that statistics showed deaths by suicide were more common for those who had left service involuntarily.
“Which further raises for me the importance of not just looking at the transition process where a person is moving from defense to non-defence status, but when they’re doing that not necessarily of their own accord, for whatever reason might be associated with it,” he said.
Mr Woodward said more support was needed during that transition period.
“Big changes are stressful … but where a change is brought about from someone else’s decision, not your own, then that is going to be even more magnified stress,” he said.
“It may raise all sorts of profound issues for that person about their sense of purpose, who they are and identity, where they go from here.”
The commission will finish its Hobart hearings this week and hand an interim report to the Governor-General on Thursday.

In the same video, the Olivia and Jackson confirmed they were going to stay together.

Scott McLaughlin says the Nashville IndyCar race is a top three in his career in terms of enjoyment, despite not winning.
McLaughlin was arguably the class of the field in a crazy 80-lapper on the streets of Music City, where he finished in second place at just a tenth of a second behind Scott Dixon.
The Team Penske driver led early from pole position before an unfortunately timed Caution just as the first pit stop cycle was starting, and a poor second pit stop dropped him all the way back to 15th.
However, when Kyle Kirkwood got aggressive and mixed up the pack, McLaughlin regained five positions in just the lap following the restart from the Caution period during which said second stop took place.
From there, he continued to pick his way through the field, profiting often when the race went green again after full course yellows, which happened eight times.
He had just over a lap to try and pass Dixon for victory when action resumed again after that last Caution, which went red flag for just over 10 minutes, but came up 0.1067s short.
“We popped out 16th, and, yeah, I was just pissed off, so I just dropped the hammer,” he recounted of the restart after the second stop.
“I felt like the seas parted, man, on the restart, and I passed all these cars.
“Jeez, I was quickly in eighth, and then there was another restart, and I passed two more, and another restart, passed a couple of more; ‘Crap, we could have a go here.’
“Passed one guy on the last one, and I’m, like, ‘Come on, Scotty, let’s go.’
“Honestly, like that was probably – even though it didn’t work out in my favor – one of the most fun races of my career with one of the best race cars I’ve ever had.
“Our car was so good, I had so much fun…
“The Cautions and stuff were a bit inconsistent for all the driving; you know, you get into a rhythm and then you stop and then you have to restart again…
“But, to battle one-on-one with Scottie [Dixon] right there…
“Like, Texas last year [when Dixon won and McLaughlin was runner-up], I didn’t really battle with him; I just wanted to bring it home [in] second.
“Today, I had a full go with him and it was awesome.
“That was probably one of the top three best things in my career today, that race.”
McLaughlin remains seventh in the series standings at a reduced, 58-point margin relative to team-mate Will Power, who clung on to top spot despite gearbox problems which saw him struggle to 11th in Nashville.
Power’s nearest rival is now none other than Dixon, at six points in arrears with three events to go.
Highlighting how manic the latest race was, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver qualified 14th and was 20th when he had to pit after being caught up in a concertina incident which triggered the third Caution of the afternoon.
Now, from an unlikely position weeks ago, Dixon is a strong chance to clinch a seventh IndyCar title this year.
The season continues at Gateway Motorsports Park, on August 19-20 (local time).

Homeowners trying to get storm-damaged properties repaired face massive waits as tradies are nearly impossible to hire.
The well-documented skills and supply shortages blighting the State have left people hoping to fix their houses wondering where to turn.
One roofing company said it had been inundated with 60 phone calls a day last week, while another said it was already booked out until next year.
The savage storms knocked out power to Perth Airport as well as 35,000 homes and wreaked havoc across Perth and the south-west last week, leaving a trail of damaged properties in their wake.
It’s not just homes that are affected. Canning Mosque in Queens Park was severely damaged during the storm when a large tree was uprooted and smashed into the prayer hall.
One of the walls was knocked down, part of the roof collapsed, structural beams were wrecked and flooding destroyed the interior.
Mosque president Bekir Serin said the damages were still being assessed by the insurance company, however, it was possible the Mosque would need to be demolished.
Amid the traditional shortages, and soaring labor and material costs, Mr Serin said the prospect of rebuilding was a big concern.
“It will be a serious challenge if we need to rebuild the Mosque. It won’t be cheap and it could take a long time,” he said.
The total cost of damages is still unknown, but a Go Fund Me has been set up to raise $1.5 million to aid construction.

There are warnings from within the construction industry about the prospect of cowboys swooping on desperate homeowners.
Chaley Kelly, from roof leak repair business Roofology, said in the past week she had been forced to turn away a lot of prospective clients, many of them elderly, because her company was already booked out until January.
Before closing its appointment book last month, the waiting list had grown to as many as 200 customers.
Mrs Kelly said she had noticed a troubling growth in the numbers of cowboy tradesmen operating.
She urged people to ask how long a company had been in business, and request a written quote outlining the scope of work, with photos taken before and after the repairs.

“We’ve seen some horror stories, so it’s important to ask some basic questions,” she said.
Shannon Hartfield, the general manager of Buss Roof Plumbing, aided the storms had sent his phone running off the hook, with about 60 calls a day.
Mr Hartfield said it had exposed the extent of shoddy workmanship on some newly built homes, with an astonishing 25 per cent of all storm damage-related repair work this week done on homes built in the past 12 to 18 months.
He said some of the basic errors included incorrectly installed gutters.
“Essentially, there are no falls on gutters — the gutters are falling the wrong way,” he said. “We are noticing gutters are being installed going up, rather than going down.”
He blamed increasingly rushed training, claiming some apprentices were being signed off before they were fully competent as the industry struggled to find enough workers.

Jazz Monroe said her Ashby roofing contractor Upon The Roof was booked out for a month even before inquiries jumped by 100 per cent last week.
She said the delays caused by excess demand had been exacerbated by ongoing supply chain issues, including delays of up to eight weeks for gutters.
For the Johns Lyng Group — an emergency response builder contracted by insurance giant RAC — last week’s damage adds to a heavy workload which still includes some repairs from last year’s Cyclone Seroja in the Geraldton region.
General manager Daryl Carmody said the average weekly calls his company dealt with rocketed from around 300 to around 1000 after the storm, and he expected the volume to continue this week as people took stock of the damage.

He said all urgent repair jobs had already been given a temporary Band-Aid fix to stem further leaking or problems. But it would take months to properly repair some of the more serious damage, like collapsed ceilings.
RAC has lodged more than over 4,800 storm claims at a cost of $8.7 million, with the bill set to increase this week.
“We see this type of storm damage two to three times a year,” Mr Carmody said.
RAC home claims manager Glen Walker said the storm damage would also create additional demand for ceiling fixers, plasterers, painters and electricians.
