‘The rules are the rules’: Cameron Smith’s bid for No 1 golf ranking ruined by penalty | Golf

Cameron Smith is being hailed for his sportsmanship after the Australian was handed a two-stroke penalty that scuppered his hopes of winning the FedEx St Jude Championship and claiming golf’s world No 1 ranking.

In a major setback before even teeing off for Sunday’s final round in Memphis, Smith was slugged with the penalty for playing from the wrong place on the fourth hole on Saturday.

The world No 2 took a drop after hooking his ball into the water off the tee on the par-3 and incorrectly played his third shot with his ball touching the red hazard line. Instead of starting two shots off the lead, Smith’s three-under-par 67 was adjusted to a 69 and left him four behind JJ Spaun in a tie for 14th at nine under.

The wind out of his sails, Smith closed with a laboring even-par 70, never really looking like being a factor down the stretch as American Will Zalatoris edged out Austrian Sepp Straka on the third hole of a dramatic sudden-death playoff to claim his maiden PGA Tour win.

Although officials had seen Smith’s incident on Saturday, they felt comfortable that he would have known he was not allowed to play a ball that was touching a hazard line and assumed it wasn’t. Chief referee Gary Young, calling it a “crazy, unfortunate situation”, said it wasn’t until another committee member saw a TV replay on Sunday that officials decided to investigate further and to speak with Smith.

Young said “because of the geometry of the situation he [Smith] was dealing with a really small area where he’s dropping it”. “It’s basically hole high and he’s basically got a slither outside of the line and he obviously dropped the ball in that area but it came back to rest against the line.

“It was at that point he obviously thought it was OK to play it from the position and it turns out the rules do not [allow it]. You have to take complete relief from that penalty area. He wasn’t aware that no portion of the ball could be touching the penalty area line. He thought that if a portion of the ball was in the general area of the course he was safe to play it.”

Smith, who won the Players Championship in March and his first major title at last month’s 150th Open at St Andrews, would have supplanted Scottie Scheffler as world No 1 if he won the St Jude after the American missed the halfway cut at the opening event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup playoffs. Despite the high stakes, Young said Smith accepted his penalty with grace and class.

“Cam is a complete gentleman and he took it that way,” the referee said. “He was completely calm through the whole process and once he found out it was a two-stroke penalty, he said to me, ‘the rules are the rules’. In typical, casual Cam fashion, I just accepted it and left the office that way.”

Matthew Guy becomes ‘Matt’ as a quasi Victorian election campaign against Daniel Andrews begins

Guy, 48, has been one of the most prominent Coalition figures in Victorian politics for a decade. But, all of a sudden, media releases now use “Matt” instead of the more familiar “Matthew”.

The name tweak was decided after the appointment of Guy’s close friend, Nick McGowan, as chief of staff. It is not clear whether his name will be changed on social media platforms.

Guy brushed off questions about “Matt”, saying former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull called him Matt. “I don’t mind – you can call me whatever you like,” he said.

Andrews said of Guy’s refresh: “I don’t think about him. I think about patients and I think about nurses.”

Eight years and two days ago, three months out from the 2014 election, then-opposition leader Daniel Andrews rebadged himself as “Dan.”

Most of the premier’s associates call him Daniel and most of Guy’s call him Matthew (although some close family and friends use Matt).

As the premier noted on Sunday about his own rebadging, “I’ve been called Dan for a very long time.” Andrews made the switch when he was barely known by the public.

Guy is more well known, Matt or otherwise.

But he is hoping a batch of policies, weariness with Andrews, a buckling health system and gloominess caused by dropping real wages combine to give him a fighting chance.

Huawei Watch D smart watch

The Huawei Watch D is the latest flagship smart watch from the Chinese tech giant, and it’s further proof that the company is more than capable of competing with the likes of Samsung and Apple in the highly competitive wearable market.

The cutting-edge blood pressure monitoring feature uses a built-in airbag to make it as accurate as possible, and other standout features like 70+ workout modes and ECG and skin temperature monitoring make the Watch D a true contender if you’re in the market for a new premium smart watch.

First impressions and setup

Compared to other smart watches in Huawei’s current portfolio, you can tell straight away that this is its best model. The packaging and the overall unboxing experience feels premium and (dare I say it) almost ‘Apple-like’.

The device is surprisingly weighty at 41 grams and feels nice and solid on your wrist. It’s also pretty and features just two non-intrusive buttons on the face’s right-hand side.

The Watch D puts a lot of focus on the device’s setup. This is partly to optimize comfort, but it also ensures that the blood pressure monitor performs as accurately as possible.

Two butterfly clasp straps are included in the box to tailor the watch to your wrist, as well as an innovative foldable ‘ruler’ to measure your wrist with. The straps are made from a rubber-like material, while the rectangular watch face is made from glass within a durable aluminum case. It feels premium and very well put together.

I reviewed the Huawei Watch GT back in March 2019 and commented then on how simple it was to set up. It’s a good thing that, other than some minor upgrades to the app over the last three years, Huawei’s user experience remains pretty much the same. Pairing to the watch takes just a couple of minutes via the HUAWEI Health app, and once complete, your device will appear on your phone and allow you to update things like the watch face with ease.

All your data can also be viewed through the app, and it goes without saying that the more you wear it, the more you can find out about your fitness and lifestyle. After approximately three weeks of wearing the Watch D, I was fascinated to see how closely my fitness was being tracked – from the dozens of times I tested my blood pressure to the amount of REM sleep I was getting.

Performance

The Huawei Watch D runs smoothly, and the 1.64-inch, 456×280-pixel AMOLED screen is one of the most responsive I’ve tested.

I’ve already touched on a handful of things the watch can do, but things like the HUAWEI TruSeen 5.0+ heart rate monitoring technology make this one of the most accurate smart watches on the market.

The ECG app packs a high-performance ECG sensor module, which provides single-lead ECG measurements, real-time analysis, and sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, and premature atrial and ventricular beat reminders to stay informed and proactive about major heart health-related risks.

The handful of the 70+ workout modes I tried worked great and were familiar, too, given my time with the Watch GT (which I still use to this day). One thing to consider is that the fabric airbag built into the strap can get sweaty after a particularly heavy workout. This could prove to be a smelly problem over time. Built-in GPS allows you to track your runs without needing your smartphone nearby.

The HUAWEI TruSleep 2.0 app works excellently. It identifies key sleep states, including deep sleep, light sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, naps, and wake-up times, with sleep quality scores and personalized advice on how to get the best possible night’s rest. I found myself checking this every day, so I could try and improve my rest time the next night.

Other key features like stress and SpO2 monitoring also worked well. Importantly, all the key information was displayed well in the HUAWEI Health app.

There are also handy features like the ability to do a daily health check-in and share your results with family members via the app. This could be particularly useful for older users who might want to share their health information.

The battery can run for an outstanding seven days between charges, which is a great selling point ahead of the likes of the Apple Watch.

One flu I did have during my time with the Watch D was that it seemed to disconnect randomly from my iPhone 11, although I suspect it might not have this issue with an Android device, particularly a Huawei one.

Sadly, you can’t do things like respond to messages via the device (which is a feature that I know a lot of Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch users don’t even use due to the small screen size). It also lacks features like web browsing, which, again, isn’t for everyone.

verdict

The Huawei Watch D is well-equipped and has some of the best (and most) features I’ve ever seen in a smart watch. Devices like this one have now reached the point where they’re genuinely able to change lifestyles and even save lives.

The elephant in the room here is the price, which I’ve purposely not mentioned until now. The Watch D currently has an RRP of $749. Pricewise, this puts the watch right next to the flagships from Samsung and Apple.

The question is – will Huawei be able to do enough to sway potential buyers towards the Watch D? If it were me, I’d be seriously tempted…

AFL 2022 Ben Rutten sacked as Bombers coach; Essendon board meeting, Alastair Clarkson, Paul Brasher, video

Essendon coach Ben Rutten could be sacked as early as today as the club holds a second meeting in the space of 24 hours.

3AW’s Neil Mitchell reports there is a strong belief that Rutten will not coach the final round of the season with assistant Daniel Giansiracusa to take charge of the team.

It comes as Essendon president Paul Brasher is understood to have stood down in the wake of their humiliating loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday.

The 84-point loss at Marvel Stadium looks likely to also spell the end for Rutten as well who was under intense pressure to hold onto his job just a season after leading them back into the finals.

The Bomber board will then decide whether to make a play for Alastair Clarkson.

The Hawks coaching great is the most talked about coach in the competition — and he doesn’t yet have a home, after leaving the Hawks in 2021.

Essendon Press Conference | 03:59

The Bombers have a 7-14 win-loss record in 2022 ahead of the final match of the regular season, where they will play Richmond on Saturday night.

Brasher indicated he would step down at year’s end earlier in the season, but their sorry defeat on Sunday has seemingly sped up at that process.

“I think you’re going to see real improvement in the second half of the year,” he said at the time.“

“We don’t want honorable losses. We’re happy about effort, but that is the baseline and we’re looking to improve upon that and not going to take to light about losing to good sides by narrow margins.”

Dud Bombers pumped by Port | 01:39

An earlier internal review is said to have fallen short of what some believe is required, with AFL.com.au reporting that there is a push for an external review wanted by some.

Rutten slammed his side’s “embarrassing effort” after fans booed players from Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

“Were bitterly disappointed,” he said.

“It was the sort of game that our members and supporters who came to the game or were watching on TV… it’s not the sort of thing they should have to watch.

“It was an embarrassing effort from our guys. It’s not something we want to stand for and not something our members and supporters should have to watch at any stage.”

‘Not going to tolerate it’: Bombers coach apologises to fans for ’embarrassing effort’ vs Power

TALKING PTS: Why Clarko ‘coup’ could open floodgates; star wasted by ‘arrogant’ club

Brasher has been unwavering in his support behind Rutten, but with the president gone a push for Clarkson has been made.

Clarkson has received formal offers from Greater Western Sydney as well as North Melbourne, with the Kangaroos tabling a five-year deal for the respected coach.

The former Hawks coach was said to have wanted to make his decision early this week, but a late push from the Bombers could see Clarkson want more time to make his decision.

On Sunday, Kangaroos great David King hit out at the Bombers for failing to make a serious play at Clarkson.

“For six months, if not 12 months, Alastair Clarkson has been sitting idle ready to be grabbed by a football club,” King said on First Crack.

“Why haven’t Essendon taken that step?

“Right now they lack system, they lack motivation and they lack standards as a footy club and I reckon the Essendon faithful are sick of it.

“Why are they gambling on a coach that is still developing when the absolute finished product is there?

“OK you’ve got to jump through a lot of hoops to get over the line, but if (Clarkson) signs at North Melbourne this week and Essendon could have got him with the list they’ve got right now, I think it’s a mistake they will rule for years.”

Dons fans heard slamming players | 00:46

King slammed the Bombers for failing to turn up and said some of the players were not playing to “AFL standard”.

“This is Essendon in a nutshell,” King lamented.

“How lax is this? Have a look at them just standing around, ambling around. This is the forward 50. There’s 10 players within arms reach of this stoppage. That (game style) is going nowhere.

“I can’t understand what they look at when they review games at the moment if that is the output of a weekend.

“We can only judge the actions they put in front of us – that is not AFL standard.”

Man charged with firearm offenses over shooting at Canberra Airport to undergo mental health assessment

A 63-year-old man has been charged with firearm offenses and will undergo a mental health assessment after allegedly firing multiple rounds inside Canberra Airport yesterday.

About 1:30pm on Sunday, shots were fired inside the airport, and a man was arrested.

No one was injured.

Police allege Ali Rachid Ammoun arrived at the airport about 1:20pm and sat on some seats near the check-in desks on the first floor.

About 1:25pm, they said he drew a firearm and fired a number of shots into the windows of the building.

Australian Federal Police officers who were stationed within the airport terminal apprehended Mr Ammoun.

The glass has some small holes in it and is clearly damaged, but the panes remain in place.

The airport was evacuated and plans were grounded for about three hours as ACT Policing and AFP Airport Police worked in partnership to secure the area and confirmed Mr Ammoun was acting alone.

Canberra Airport returned to normal operations about 5:00pm, with flights resuming shortly afterwards.

Alleged shooter to be sent for mental health assessment

Mr Ammoun appeared by video link in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

He is facing three charges, including firing and possessing a Smith and Wesson revolver, and intentionally discharging the gun causing another person to fear for their safety.

In court, his only request was that the ABC be excluded.

Magistrate Robert Cook refused the application, saying it was an open court.

Mr Ammoun did not apply for bail, and has been remanded in custody to undergo a mental health assessment at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

The case will return to court on September 5.

ABC reporter Lily Thomson, who was at the airport at the time, said she heard loud bangs and then saw people running towards her.

“I just assumed people were running for their flight,” she said.

But she said she realized something was wrong when people started screaming “run.”

She said she was left feeling “shaken” afterwards.

“It’s just the feeling of not knowing, that’s quite terrifying,” she said.

“As soon as we got out, people were on their phones to loved ones, hugging each other, that kind of thing.”

Airport CEO praises police response

Canberra Airport chief executive Stephen Byron said despite the “terrifying” nature of the incident, authorities had responded well.

“We had our team both on-site and others coming into play straight away,” he said.

“The AFP has trained for these sorts of situations, where you have an armed intruder in an airport environment, and they have teams that are in place and they respond and indeed engaged immediately.

“In this case the offender was calm and submitted to their arrest.”

He said police had worked “incredibly efficiently and effectively” to sweep the airport and ensure no one else was involved.

“In fact, it was a pretty quick process, taking about three and a quarter hours for the terminal to be fully reopened,” he said.

More security at airports not needed: expert

John Coyne, the head of the Border Security Program at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute said the shooting was extremely rare by Australian standards, and there was not much more airports could do to respond to such an incident.

He said extra security at the front entrance, a measure suggested by some, could actually create even more of a risk.

“That could be a good idea, but then all of a sudden you’ve got large crowds of people lining up in the close vicinity of cars on the sidewalk waiting to go in, so that’s an even bigger target where even more casualties could occur ,” Mr Coyne said.

“I’ve always asked, can you make an airport really secure? And I always say, yes you can — what you can do is you can make sure that no plans fly, no one works at the airport and that there’s no travellers, because everything after that is a compromise.”

Gordon Ramsay’s model daughter shares bikini photo to Instagram

Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Holly is all grown up.

The 22-year-old recently wowed fans after sharing a bikini photo during a getaway to the British coastal town of Cornwall.

In the snap, the model could be seen wearing a cobalt blue string bikini with a white linen shirt worn loosely over the top.

Her blonde locks can be seen falling over her shoulders as she turns her face to lap up the UK’s summer weather.

Holly, the twin of the celebrity chef’s eldest son Jack, captioned the post: “Sun kissed.”

Fans of the “lifestyle influencer” have been quick to flood her post with streams of adoring comments, with many labeling the “stunning” photo.

“Hope you don’t mind me saying this but you look stunning in your photos,” one said.

“Absolutely beautiful,” another wrote.

Others commented on how “lovely” her $423 two-piece swimmers, from supermodel Heidi Klum’s bikini line, are.

“Such a lovely colour,” one wrote.

“That cossie looks great on you,” another said.

It’s not the first time Holly has wowed her 310,000 followers with a bikini photo – last year she caused a stir posing for a snap on a sun-soaked beach in the Maldives.

In the picture, Holly flaunted her abs in an orange patterned bikini as she relaxed on the sand after jetting off for a dreamy post-Christmas getaway at the end of December.

The relaxing break came after she celebrated one year sober following a secret battle with alcohol.

The daughter of the expletive-loving chef shared her milestone achievement with her Instagram followers and admitted it wasn’t easy.

Holly has previously opened up about being sexually assaulted twice at the age of 18, leading to a devastating battle with PTSD that saw her spend three months in a mental health hospital.

She bravely spoke of the ordeal for the first time in last August on her podcast 21 & Over.

The assaults took place when she was an 18-year-old university student and she credited her dad with helping her deal with the aftermath.

Holly is one of five of Gordon and Tana’s children, along with her twin Jack, sisters Megan, 24, and Tilly, 20, and youngest brother Oscar, 2.

Gatt recovering from Behemoth blow

Paul Gatt is resting following his remarkable effort to stay aboard Behemoth and ride out the dual Memsie Stakes winner in Saturday’s $127,250 G3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

The popular South Australian jockey received a nasty blow shortly after the start when Behemoth ($2.70 favorite) began awkwardly.

Behemoth reared and then dipped out of the stalls, throwing his head back to make considerable contact with Gatt.

“He’s got a pretty sore neck and a headache,” Gatt’s manager Damien Wilton said on Sunday morning.

“To come out of it how he has so far, obviously he’ll be monitored today, but it seems lucky.”

Gatt was stood down from riding in the final two races at Morphettville and is understood to have little recollection of Behemoth’s eleventh-placed finish in the Spring Stakes, won by Calypso Reign.

“Basically, the horse went up in the gates and then he’s (Gatt) copped a fairly nasty whack, he was riding on adrenaline afterwards,” Wilton said.

“I think it could have been a hell of a lot worse obviously, after the race he was in a massive amount of discomfort when he was talking to David Jolly and whoever else.

“He obviously didn’t ride after the race; we’ll just see how he is within himself today and go from there.

“He was able to text me through most of the last quarter of the footy last night, which being a Carlton supporter I didn’t appreciate.”

Gatt is one of South Australia’s leading riders, winning 52 races last season.

Police take man into custody in hunt for gunman after shooting at Barra Close home in Leeming

Police have taken a man into custody in their hunt for a gunman after a shooting at Leeming.

The 37-year-old is assisting officers as they investigate the incident that took place at a Barra Close home about 1.20am on Monday.

Police raced to the property after a weapon, believed to be a shotgun, was fired.

A neighbor said they heard two shots in the night.

It is believed a young family lives at the property which was targeted.

No one was hurt and those involved were known to each other. It is not known whether the incident is bikie linked.

Investigators are yet to confirm if it was a drive-by shooting but more information is expected from a police press conference at 11am.

As of 10am, there was still a big police presence at the home, with officers knocking on the doors of nearby homes and forensic officers combing the area for clues.

Forensics officers had started moving their attention from the home to a patch of grass about 150m from where the shooting took place.

Other officers were seen taking photographs and putting items into bags.

The home is across the road from a bus stop in the quiet, apparently family-friendly street. Toys are stretched across several front lawns.
