Salt Bae’s London restaurant has made £7m in just four months despite getting hammered by everyone

Salt Bae’s restaurant in London has reported an impressive £7 million ($8.55m) in sales in its first four months of trading despite receiving poor reviews and criticism over its prices.

All it took was one customer purchasing one of the restaurant’s gold leaf-covered steaks and a bottle of wine.

Okay, admittedly it took a little bit more than that, but the infamously high prices at the restaurant will no doubt have gone a long way in helping the Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Knightsbridge earn into the millions within its first few months.

The restaurant, owned by viral sensation Salt Bae (Nusret Gökçe), opened its doors in September 2021 before revealing its takings in a financial report filed to the UK’s Companies House.

The report revealed that the company brought in £7m in its first four months of trading, with an overall profit of £2.3m ($2.79m) in the year to December.

Nusret UK Limited, which owns the restaurant and is controlled by the Turkish conglomerate Doğuş Group, said the Knightsbridge location had ‘performed higher than the expected results’ in spite of the impacts of coronavirus on the hospitality industry.

The high earnings also come in spite of the mixed reviews the restaurant has received, with its rating on Google coming in at just 2.9 stars and a TripAdvisor rating placing it among the worst places to eat in London.

Reviews from customers have been varied, with some praising the food, atmosphere and overall experience while others just can’t get over the prices, which according to receipts shared by customers include £18 asparagus, £11 Red Bulls and a staggering £850 steak .

One review from a not-so-impressed customer reads: “Bang average for what it’s supposed to be….I went with the intention of hoping I’d have at least a half decent experience. But slow service, average food, with the ridiculous price they charge for what they’re giving… in short, if you can avoid going, definitely do so.”

Another says: “Not even mentioning the money I knew where I was going but service and food are not worth it. Getting food before drinks, stake [sic] was very good but had better in GAUCHO for half the price and with better wine selection. Don’t get the fuss around this… maybe superficial reasons for the rich to feel rich. my macdonald’s [sic] after was great tho.”

Though the restaurant obviously isn’t for everyone, it’s at least received enough praise to edge it towards a three-star rating on Google, and there are a number of five-star ratings from customers who were blown away by their experiences. Plus, the report of his earnings indicates it’s not doing too badly either way, so for once Salt Bae will probably have no issue ignoring the saltiness.

Tesla’s big battery started with an Elon Musk Twitter exchange – but behind the scenes, it wasn’t that simple

It began with a bet between billionaires.

In March 2017, Atlassian chief Mike Cannon-Brookes challenged Tesla boss Elon Musk to make good on a thought bubble about using batteries to solve South Australia’s energy problems.

“Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free,” Mr Musk replied.

loading

Not to be outdone, Mr Cannon-Brookes upped the ante.

“Legend! You’re on mate,” he responded, before promising to pull strings to secure “mates rates.”

The Twitter exchange has been much mythologised — in the eyes of some, it is an almost Damascene moment in which Australia relinquished its fear of renewables and embraced battery storage.

It is certainly true that it catalyzed the creation of Neoen’s 150-megawatt Hornsdale Power Reserve (aka the big battery), which was first switched on almost five years ago.

But then-SA premier Jay Weatherill recalls the billionaires’ Twitter banter as a double-edged sword.

“It was certainly not choreographed — it was a shock to see this,” he said.

“We were about to launch our [energy] plan … and it included a renewable technology fund of about $150 million, and one of the first cabs off the rank was likely to be a grid-level battery.

“thisexchange [then] occurred which created a massive problem for me, because everyone was telling me to accept what appeared to be the offer of the century.”

Context is important here — three major blackouts in SA in less than six months, including the statewide outage of September 2016, had poured petrol on an already heated energy debate.

The Twitter exchange occurred a week before the equally notorious, but much more acrimonious, confrontation involving Mr Weatherill and then-federal energy minister Josh Frydenberg over renewables.

While Mr Musk later joked that all he’d been doing was “talking smack”, Mr Cannon-Brookes has said his own initial tweet had equally humble origins.

It was late at night and Mr Cannon-Brookes was looking after his young child when he spontaneously responded to an Australian Financial Review article about Tesla’s battery plans.

“I just tweeted to Elon, was he serious?” I have told the 100 Climate Conversations podcast.

“I went to bed and then he came back and… we went back and forth negotiating and then sort of all hell broke loose.

“Suddenly [then prime minister] Malcolm Turnbull was on the phone and it went a bit nuts for a couple of weeks.”

‘It was a turning point’

During 2017, when Mr Musk enjoyed near-rockstar status among renewables supporters, there were obvious political upsides to Tesla’s proposal.

But Tesla wasn’t the only interested party — indeed, it was a Zen Energy push that had put batteries on SA’s agenda.

Despite the momentum behind the Tesla pitch, the SA government had committed to a procurement process to assess individual submissions on their merits.

“The way I chose to do it was to ring Elon Musk directly and say, ‘Great idea, we’re about to open up a tender process, we’d love you to bid’,” Mr Weatherill recalled.

“He then helpfully tweeted out, ‘Had a great conversation with the premier of South Australia’. That took the immediate pressure off me.

“Fortunately they won the tend on a proper basis, but obviously I was hoping they would win because the reputational benefit and the pulling power and the publicity that Elon Musk was able to generate were obviously powerful.”

On the other hand, “it would have been embarrassing for me — or not so much embarrassing but a lost opportunity — if he didn’t win”, Mr Weatherill said.

For energy expert Marija Petkovic, part of the battery’s power was the way it provided proof of concept.

“Those of us in the energy industry have known for a very long time that battery storage would be one of the key pieces of technology that’s going to take us to a highly renewable grid,” she said.

“But it’s always hard to be the first off the mark.

“Having that first project be built and operational was a huge deal — it really allowed all the others to follow suit afterwards.”

The battery itself hasn’t been entirely free of controversy. In June, the Hornsdale Power Reserve was fined $900,000 for failing to provide grid stabilization services as required in 2019.

But it also recently secured approval from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to deliver grid-scale inertia services to the National Electricity Market.

“Batteries provide quite negligible energy in the [wholesale] market, but where they provide value is those ancillary services,” Ms Petkovic said.

“There’s about 100 more in the pipeline — not all of those projects will proceed to construction, some are very early stages … but it is quite promising.”

While Mr Weatherill lost the subsequent election, he remembers those months in 2017 with fondness.

“There are lots of downsides but this is one of the upsides of making big decisions that set new trajectories,” he said.

“It was a turning point, and quite an exciting one.”

Elon Musk sells Tesla shares worth $9.8 billion, cites chance of forced Twitter deal

Tesla boss Elon Musk has sold US$6.9 billion ($9.8 billion) worth of shares in the electric vehicle maker, saying the funds could be used to finance a potential Twitter deal if he loses a legal battle with the social media platform.

“In the (hopefully unlikely) event that Twitter forces this deal to close *and* some equity partners don’t come through, it is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock,” he said in a tweet late on Tuesday.

Shares of the microblogging site rose 3.5 per cent to $44.35 in pre-market trading, but were still trading significantly below Mr Musk’s offer price of $54.20 per share.

Tesla shares were up 1.6 per cent at $863.1.

Mr Musk in early July tore up his April 25 agreement to buy Twitter for $44 billion.

Twitter has sued Mr Musk to force him to complete the transaction, dismissing his claim that he was misled about the number of spam accounts on the social media platform as buyer’s remorse, in the wake of a plunge in technology stocks.

The two sides head to trial on October 17.

loading

Following the announcement of the share sale on Tuesday, Mr Musk took to Twitter and said “yes” when asked if he was done selling Tesla stock, adding he would buy it again if the Twitter deal does not close.

“The removal of the ‘fire sale’ risk, the fact Musk has already raised cash in case of a Twitter decision going against him and the comment that he’ll buy back stock if Twitter deal gets dropped all builds into a positive bias for Tesla ,” said Mark Taylor, sales trader at Mirabaud Securities.

A representative confirmed on Friday that Khloe and her ex, Tristan, had welcomed a healthy baby boy to the world.

The two had been working on having a second child via surrogacy back in 2021 and the announcement that a baby was conceived came to the forefront in November of last year.

That was before the news of the NBA star’s infidelity and fathering a son with Maralee Nichols became apparent in December 2021. The couple officially split following the cheating scandal in January of this year.

Break Your Social Media Addiction With This iPhone App

Image for article titled This iPhone App Might Actually Help You Break Your Social Media Addiction

screenshot: Joel Cunningham

I am just full of advice about social media, most of which can be boiled down to “put down your phone” and “stop engaging.” Which is funny, because I am incredibly bad at doing both of those things, despite my best efforts (downloading a little app that grows trees while you don’t use your phone, setting a goal to read more books, having the same conversation with my therapist over and over). But I’ve finally found a trick—a clever iPhone app—that seems to be working. For now.

Ironically, I made this discovery while mindlessly scrolling Twitter on my iPhone, which is what I do during any given moment of inactivity, from taking the dog out to pee, to waiting for the elevator, to putting the kettle on the boil. In these moments, I don’t actually want anything Twitter has to offer; it’s simply a mindless habit, and that lack of purpose never stops that quick swipe from turning into 10 useless minutes.

But this Shortcut Automation app—called “one second” by its innovator, Frederik Riedel (@FrederikRiedel)—seeks to inject some mindfulness into that mindless habit. To use it, you set up an automation that will trigger one sec to run when you attempt to open whatever social media, gaming, or other app is eating into your day. It’s a simple, soothing bit of animation that will interrupt the process, encouraging you to take a deep breath before you tap a second time to confirm that you truly do want to open that app—or not.

You can see how it works in this Tweet from Riedel:

Image for article titled This iPhone App Might Actually Help You Break Your Social Media Addiction

I realize that there are many other tools that encourage you to limit social media use, from Apple’s own Focus Modes to screen time alerts, but one sec has worked best for me because it cuts me off at the right moment; it’s easier to force me to think with intention (“6 attempts to open Twitter within 24 hours”) than to scold me into stopping doing something that I’m already doing (any pop-up telling me my app usage for the day has elapsed is instantly ignored). You can block one app for free, and unlock additional features (use with multiple apps, more robust breathing exercises, time tracking, website blocking) with a premiumsubscription ($14.99/year).

Don’t get me wrong, I still have a fairly serious internet addiction. But I’ve also managed to stop myself from staring at my phone while waiting for the dog to poop for five days straight. That’s not nothing.

Elon Musk says $63.7 billion Twitter takeover could move ahead with bot info

Elon Musk says his planned $US44 billion ($63.7 billion) takeover of Twitter should move forward if the company can confirm some details about how it measures whether user accounts are “spam bots” or real people.

The billionaire and Tesla CEO have been trying to back out of his April agreement to buy the social media company, leading Twitter to sue him last month to complete the acquisition.

Mr Musk countersued, accusing Twitter of misleading his team about the true size of its user base and other problems he said amounted to fraud and breach of contract.

Both sides are headed toward an October trial in a Delaware court.

“If Twitter simply provides their method of sampling 100 accounts and how they’re confirmed to be real, the deal should proceed on original terms,” Mr Musk tweeted.

“However, if it turns out that their SEC filings are materially false, then it should not.”

Mr Musk, who has more than 100 million Twitter followers, went on to challenge Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal to a “public debate about the Twitter bot percentage.”

Twitter declined to comment.

The company has repeatedly disclosed to the Securities and Exchange Commission an estimate that fewer than 5 per cent of user accounts are fake or spam, with a disclaimer that it could be higher.

Mr Musk waived his right to further due diligence when he signed the April merger agreement.

Teresa Giudice’s hair is both mocked and celebrated by social media users after she ties the knot

Numerous Twitter users voiced their opinions about how Teresa Giudice’s hair was styled during her wedding ceremony, which took place in East Brunswick, New Jersey on Saturday.

The 50-year-old reality television personality’s locks were notably styled into a large bun that sat on top of her head and was held in place by a crown.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member was widely mocked for her hairstyle, which earned her comparisons to science-fiction characters and fellow figures from television, though several users also shared their admiration for the difficult-to-style look.

Musk suggests deal could go through if Twitter provides info on confirming users

Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggested early Saturday that his acquisition deal with Twitter could still go through if the social media platform provided information about how it confirms that sampled accounts are real.

“If Twitter simply provides their method of sampling 100 accounts and how they’re confirmed to be real, the deal should proceed on original terms,” Musk tweeted. “However, if it turns out that their SEC filings are materially false, then it should not.”

Later he tweeted he was challenging the CEO of Twitter to a debate.

“I hereby challenge@paraga to a public debate about the Twitter bot percentage. Let him prove to the public that Twitter has <5% fake or spam daily users!” Musk tweeted.

Musk also tweeted out a poll asking if less than 5 percent of daily users on Twitter were spam or fake.

The tweets from Musk are the latest in the drama between the SpaceX CEO and the social media platform following legal action over his bid to buy Twitter.

Earlier this year, Musk reached a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, but less than three months later, he terminated the deal. His legal team argued at the time there was inadequate information provided about bots on Twitter’s site. The team also alleged that the social media company had fired several employees in violation of their agreement and that its statements regarding bots were not accurate.

The social media platform sued Musk to force him to complete the acquisition.

“Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, Musk apparently believes that he—unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law—is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value, and walk away,” the lawsuit against Musk said.

But Musk filed a countersuit earlier this month, with his lawyers alleging that he was not consulted on big decisions at the social media company and that the billionaire had entered into the agreement without knowing about the platform’s “misrepresentations or omissions,” which impacted his perception of the site’s value, according to The Associated Press.

Twitter hit back against the countersuit, saying that the argument was “imagined in an effort to escape a merger agreement that Musk no longer found attractive once the stock market—and along with it, his massive personal wealth—declined in value.”

Twitter Spaces might soon get a revamped look

Twitter has confirmed they will be revamping Spaces in the near future, but shared no timeframe concerning the same.

TwitterTwitter Spaces might get a revamp in the near future.

Twitter’s Spaces– the platform’s audio chatroom feature– is getting a revamp. The social media platform confirmed changes are indeed underway and that they are working on a new Twitter Spaces tab in the app itself, but did not reveal any information about the same. But some images revealed the company’s plans to group Spaces based on common interests like Music.

A report by TechCrunch suggests Spaces might also get the ‘Your Daily Digest’ treatment, which as it might you thought, will be a collection of Spaces from people you already follow or might want to listen to. While Twitter did not say the images shared by TechCrunch were fake, they pointed out that they were indeed outdated and inaccurate.

Twitter told TechCrunch that the changes reflected an ‘initial version’ of the new experience and that it might change in the coming days. While the company did say they will be announcing the changes in the near future, there is no timeframe as to if and when they will be implemented.

A couple of months ago, Twitter made it easier for those using Spaces to see information like who’s hosting and Topics being discussed on the Space bar.

Beyonce fans react to Diane Warren seemingly shading the singer for using 24 songwriters

While Beyonce’s legions of fans have been enjoying her new album Renaissance – her first album since 2016’s Lemonade – some have been defending her from some supposed shade thrown her way by Oscar-nominated songwriter Diane Warren.

The 65-year-old Warren took to Twitter on Monday, asking, ‘How can there be 24 writers on a song?’ with a rolling eyes emoji.

The tweet – seemingly in reference to Beyonce’s song Alien Superstar – was not met well by the BeyHive, with fans bashing her for everything from her age to not knowing how samples work.

Warren responded, ‘I didn’t mean that as an attack or as disrespect. I didn’t know this, thank you for making me aware of it. I don’t need to be mean about it.’
