Charlie Teo: Controversial neurosurgeon performing surgery on Australian patients in Spain

Controversial neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has been performing thousands of dollars worth of surgery in Spain while under strict conditions on him operating in Australia.

One Australian family has paid $90,000 to fly their 20-year-old son to a Spanish hospital to have Dr Teo remove a tumor from his back.

Dr Teo was one of Australia’s most high-profile brain surgeons, and had been often referred to by patients as a “miracle worker” before he was placed under strict conditions by the NSW medical regulator last year because of concerns his practice was a risk to the public.

The conditions require Dr Teo to gain written approval from an approved neurosurgeon before he performs certain operations in Australia.

Those conditions do not extend beyond Australia, however, and it has emerged that Dr Teo has assisted in at least three surgeries in the last year in hospitals in Madrid and Alicante in Spain.

He has also been present at operations in South Africa.

Dr Teo, alongside other neurosurgeons operated on Billy Baldwin at the Hospital Universitario Fundacion Jimenez Diax in July this year, at the cost of $70,000.

Dr Teo had removed a brain tumor from Mr Baldwin when he was five-years-old.

His father Alasdair Baldwin said he had always had “complete faith” in Dr Teo.

Aussie tourist arrested after illegally riding a moped through Pompeii heritage site

An Australian tourist has made international headlines and was labeled a “barbarian” after he was arrested for riding through a UNESCO world heritage site in Italy.

The male tourist, aged 33, was charged with “unauthorized access” by police after he drove a moped for almost two kilometers through the ancient ruins of Pompeii in the country’s south.

Italian police allege the Aussie man rode through the world-famous archaeological park via a service gate following the entry of cars from construction companies.

Security and guards apprehended the man before any damage was done to the 2000 year old site following a series of CCTV footage.

“The route taken is a dirt road outside the ancient city walls, used by site vehicles for excavation works,” the park said in a statement.

“It is safe, restored, and not accessible to the public. So there was no danger for either visitors or for the archaeological heritage at any point.”

The man claimed he was unaware he drove through the ancient site – which was destroyed in 79AD following a volcanic eruption.

The UNESCO world heritage site does not allow tourist vehicles to drive through.

No parts of the ancient city were accessed or damaged by the tourist, however Italian media has slammed the man, labeling him as a “barbarian”.

The lucky winner made the sage decision to switch up her usual numbers, which delivered her the $20m.

“I’ve never expected to win anything big. I usually land three numbers, but never anything more.

The winning numbers in the draw were 30, 23, 9, 22, 5, 28 and 18, while the Powerball number was 3.

The woman also defied her husband’s doubts, who thought she had no chance of winning.

“When I purchased the ticket, my husband and daughter were with me, and I told them that I’d put a ticket on for Powerball, and my husband said to me, ‘don’t bother, we’re never going to win ‘” she grandmother said.

“I guess I’ve proved him wrong.”

The grandmother got the thrill of her life when she realized she had the winning numbers.

“I was sitting in the lounge room, and I checked the winning numbers before going to bed, and I didn’t believe it,” she said

“I couldn’t get out of the chair. I couldn’t go to the toilet. I couldn’t move. It was so surreal.

“I only got about 40 minutes sleep last night. I’m so tired, but it’s worth it.”

“It’s truly a special day for us, and we’re absolutely over the moon,” he said.

Qantas union Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association could hold one-minute strike over pay dispute

Qantas has responded to an announcement that more than 700 aircraft engineers from Qantas and Jetstar are planning to stop work for “one-minute” in August.

The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association(ALAEA) federal secretary Steve Purvinas told members in a meeting on Wednesday the majority had voted in favor of industrial action.

Airline engineers are asking their employer for a 12 per cent pay rise to make up for stagnant wages the last four years.

The union’s first action will be a one-minute stoppage across all airlines sometime in late August.

Qantas engineering executive manager Scott McConnell has said the airline is “disappointed” in the union’s decision to strike and is putting contingency plans in place to deal with disruptions.

“It’s extremely disappointing the union has taken this step towards industrial action,” Mr McConnell said.

“The union has repeatedly said that any industrial action won’t impact customers’ travel plans and, while we hope they stick to their word, we’re also putting in place contingency plans in case they don’t.

The children’s father Linny Bellamy told of his family’s actions to ensure they’d survive while stuck alone in the outback for two straight days.

He said they relied on roadside puddles for sustenance and used a mirror to attract the attention of a police search aircraft.

“I can’t believe they managed to stay as strong as they did,” Mr Bellamy said.

‘Calm down’: WA Premier Mark McGowan issues stern warning to China

China’s aggression after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan was “a bit over the top”, according to West Australian Premier Mark McGowan, who urged Beijing to “calm down”.

Ms Pelosi recently became the most senior US official to visit Taipei in decades and met with President Tsai Ing-wen, but it sparked outrage from China that does not recognize Taiwan as a nation.

Mr McGowan repeatedly clashed with the Morrison government – and especially former Defense Minister Peter Dutton – over their rhetoric towards China, which is WA’s biggest trading partner.

While he refused to say whether Ms Pelosi’s visit was appropriate, Mr McGowan said he was “obviously” concerned about tensions in the region.

“The reaction has been a bit over the top and I think there needs to be a calm down on the part of China,” Mr McGowan told reporters on Monday.

“I don’t know the circumstances as to why she went there… but I don’t think the reaction should have been as strong as it was.”

Since Ms Pelosi’s visit last week, the Chinese military has conducted sea and air exercises to show its ability to launch an attack on Taiwan.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has condemned China’s actions.

Meanwhile, Mr McGowan has backed WA Defense Industries Minister Paul Papalia in pushing for a greater military presence in the state.

It comes after retired Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston and former defense minister Stephen Smith were chosen to review the Australian Defense Force’s capabilities.

Mr McGowan said having more army and air force teams in WA was appropriate “just in case in the long-term future something happened”.

“There is no were (sic) in the laws of the gun laws that I have broken to stop me having a gun license,” Young says in his application.

“I need my gun license for my business. I hope the Tribunal over turns (sic) the decision so I can have my license.”

Perth real estate: Suburbs where it now costs more than $1m to buy a house

Eleven suburbs have joined the $1m median house price club as values continue to climb in Perth.

While other states are seeing house prices fall, Perth has lagged behind most of the other capitals.

It means despite rising interest rates and cost of living pressures, the housing market in WA has soared in the past year.

Six of the 11 suburbs recorded more than 20 per cent price growth during the 2021-22 financial year, according to the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia.

Marmion, Mount Hawthorn, North Perth, Fremantle and Kensington had their median house prices tip above $1.1m at the end of June.

Gwelup, Booragoon, Karrinyup, Leederville, Iluka and Como reached $1m or more.

The top suburb is Marmion, which now has a median price of $1.27m — an increase of 32 per cent in the past year.

REIWA president Damian Collins said people had started to gain confidence in WA’s strong economy and property market, which had translated into more sales at the top end.

“All of these suburbs have had medians hovering below $1m for quite some time,” he said.

“It is impressive to see the demand for houses in these suburbs hold strong throughout the 2021-22 financial year, now placing them in Perth’s luxury market.”

Mr Collins said Perth’s premium market was attracting a lot of interest from buyers leading to strong price growth.

“If you are considering selling in one of these suburbs, now would be an opportunistic time to capitalize on this demand,” he said.
