Melbourne Demons need to fix their second halves ahead of AFL finals series

With AFL finals looming large, the focus is intensifying on the legitimate challengers for the flag.

Geelong and Collingwood are top of the form line, with impressive winning streaks ahead of September.

Hovering in third place, by virtue of a sliver of percentage that separates them from fourth and fifth, are the Demons.

Even after a dramatic loss to the unstoppable Magpies at a rocking MCG last Friday night, pundits are largely keeping faith with a Melbourne side that has now lost six of its past 10 games.

West Coast star Tim Kelly learns western derby fate at AFL Tribunal

West Coast star Tim Kelly has failed in his bid to have a one-game suspension downgraded at the AFL Tribunal and will miss Saturday’s western derby against Fremantle.

Kelly was cited for engaging in rough conduct against Adelaide’s Sam Berry during Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium.

His dangerous tackle was assessed as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, resulting in the offer of a one-game suspension.

West Coast lawyer David Grace QC said the club agreed Kelly’s tackle was careless but the Eagle did everything possible to protect his opponent.

Fresh twist in Port Adelaide’s prison bar jumper debate as Collingwood makes bizarre teal strip offer

It is the great debate that has been labeled “ridiculous” by Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield, and it’s just taken another bizarre twist.

The lingering feud over Port Adelaide’s prison bar jumper has possibly – and certainly tentatively – moved forward with Collingwood prepared to offer the Power a minor concession, according to a News Corp report.

The Magpies are reportedly prepared to let Port wear its prison bar jumper if the white stripes are replaced by teal stripes.

The historical Guernsey is worn by the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL and used to be seen in the AFL during the national comp’s heritage round. However, the AFL has scrapped that round.

Port Adelaide has since wanted to bring the jumper back into the AFL for the Showdown games against crosstown rival Adelaide but those requests have been met with staunch opposition from Collingwood who believe only their club should wear black and white stripes.

Dangerfield recently weighed into the debate, saying: “If we profess to be a national competition then… [that means] you have to acknowledge and understand the history.

“Being a national competition means we should acknowledge what those teams have done, even though it was in the SANFL (in Port Adelaide’s case), I think it’s still really important to acknowledge that history.”

According to reports, the clubs are due to discuss the issue but it is said that Collingwood will not budge from this latest teal bar offer.

Wayne Carey breaks his silence over ‘heated clash’ with Anthony Stevens 20 years after sex scandal

Kangaroos premiership star Wayne Carey has broken his silence over reports he had a heated altercation with Anthony Stevens outside a Melbourne pub on Saturday, 20 years after the pair fell out over Carey’s infamous affair with his teammate’s wife.

Carey’s fling with Stevens’ ex Kelli became the biggest sex scandal in Australian sports history when they were caught together in a toilet at a house party, leading to the two-time premiership captain leaving the club in disgrace.

The pair were at Yarraville’s Railway Hotel on Saturday night for a 1996 premiership reunion when Carey ‘went at’ Stevens, according to SEN’s Sam Edmunds.

They allegedly needed to be separated after Carey ‘went at’ Stevens after accusing him of ‘talking behind his back and telling people he couldn’t be contacted and to not bother trying to catch up with him, but then being fine in-person’ , the report said.

While Carey joined his teammates as they were paraded around the ground during the Kangaroos’ clash with the Swans at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, Stevens was nowhere to be seen.

It was reported he didn’t attend because he was too ‘shattered by the heated exchange’, but other ex-North Melbourne stars later said he was ill and didn’t boycott the event.

Now Carey has told his colleague at Channel Seven, Tom Browne, that there wasn’t an intense altercation and they didn’t have to be kept apart.

Carey added that Stevens stayed with the group of North Melbourne ex-players as they went to St Kilda, and the Herald Sun reported that the pair ‘shared a beer afterwards’.

Stevens is now a Kangaroos board member and president of the club’s past player association, and was a key driver behind organizing the event.

It included an informal catch-up at the pub on Saturday night, before the premiership players took part in a motorcade and photo opportunity before the Kangaroos game on Sunday.

Carey’s affair with Kelli emerged in 2002, after an encounter at a party hosted by club champion Glenn Archer attended by Kangaroos players.

Kelli followed Carey into a bathroom to discuss their sordid relationship, which started weeks earlier.

Kelli Stevens (pictured) found herself at the center of the biggest sex scandal in Australian sport when her affair with Carey was exposed

Stevens and Carey played together for North Melbourne from 1989 to 2001 before the betrayal was uncovered.

After leaving the club in disgrace, Carey joined the Adelaide Crows in 2003, and took the field against his former teammates in a fiery clash that saw him come face-to-face with Stevens.

In a twist, Stevens was named captain of the club following Carey’s departure.

In an interview with veteran journalist Mike Sheahan on Fox Footy in 2015, Stevens said he told his ex-teammate to ‘stick it’ at the time, but was also disappointed in Carey’s behavior following the betrayal.

‘It’s the one thing he has never done,’ Stevens said, when asked by Sheahan if Carey has apologized.

‘He has never actually gone out of his way to say sorry – for whatever reason.’

Carey did eventually apologize the following year – a full 14 years on from the sordid event.

Carey rehashed the while appearing on SAS Australia earlier this year, telling Chief Instructor Ant Middleton that the affair was a huge moment in his life.

‘It’s haunted me for over 20 years. I was in self-destruction mode. You know, I guess my life started to unravel,’ he said under interrogation.

At the time Carey was also married, to his first wife Sally McMahon. Stevens was even the groomsman at the wedding.

From Oliver Hoare’s 1,500m win to the boisterous Birmingham crowds, here are our picks for the best moments from the 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games closing ceremony gave us a bright, bold, and banging Brummie farewell, and an uplifting handover to Victoria 2026.

So with the Games now officially over, we’ve picked out some of our favorite moments from the 11 absorbing days of competition.

Oliver Hoare stuns hot field to win 1,500m

From an Australian perspective, when it comes to a pure sporting spectacle against a world-class field, Oliver Hoare’s win in the men’s 1,500 meters is at the top.

An Australian male 1,500 meter athlete crosses the line in first place as a Kenyan opponent stumbles.
Oliver Hoare won in breathtaking fashion.(Getty Images: David Ramos)

Hoare was racing against the current world champion as well as the reigning Olympic bronze and silver medalists.

It was perhaps the strongest field of any athletics event at the Games.

And not only did Hoare win it, he did it in the most breathtaking fashion.

Coming fourth around the bend, he started gaining ground in that final stretch, with those watching thinking, ‘He’s going to get bronze, he’s going to get silver … OH MY GOSH, HE’S WON IT!’

He lunged to the line as Kenya’s Abel Kipsang stumbled, and cemented his place in Australia’s middle-distance running folklore.

Packed crowds create brilliant atmosphere, especially for local athletes

When the members of the ABC Sport team turned up to Birmingham a few days before the Games began, we were a little worried.

The people we spoke to seemed almost oblivious that the Games were about to start, and there was an air of indifference around the town.

But once the opening ceremony rolled around, it was like a flick was switched, and Brummies turned out in force and in full voice.

Australian cycling tactics blasted by England’s Anna Henderson after Georgia Baker’s Commonwealth Games gold medal

An English cyclist beaten to gold by an Australian in the Commonwealth Games time trial has taken aim after losing out again in a “rubbish” road race won by “boring” Aussie tactics.

Three days after finishing runner-up to Grace Brown, Anna Henderson finished 24th as Georgia Baker took gold in Sunday’s 112km contest.

Baker and fellow Australian Sarah Roy, who won bronze, immediately posed for celebratory photos with teammates Brown, Alexandra Manly, Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Brodie Chapman.

But while several riders from other nations congratulated Baker and Roy, others were far from impressed.

Henderson vowed to be active and launched a series of attacks in the race – only to be continually threatened by Brown and Brodie Chapman, and her frustration showed afterwards.

“It was a rubbish race. The Australians had a really boring race plan,” the 23-year-old said.

“The Australians just played it really boring, didn’t really make a show of it.

“As a rider like me sometimes you’re going to get marked out. We made a break but unfortunately it came back. I was a bit disappointed today.”

Chapman was unaware of Henderson’s criticism when she took the high road and credited the Englishwoman for her challenges.

“Anna was insanely strong,” the 31-year-old Aussie said.

“She definitely put the sting in everyone’s legs today.”

Australia’s tactics may have been ruthless but they were also faultless, providing Baker with the opportunity to win her third gold medal at Birmingham 2022 following two victories inside the velodrome.

“I’m pretty happy – it was a whole team effort and I’m just so proud I could pull it off for the team,” Baker said.

“The girls led me out beautifully.”

Australia had several winning options and fellow sprinter Alex Manly was originally their protected rider.

But a change to the finish straight meant they committed to Baker, which was confirmed on the road with 20km left.

“The way Australian cycling is developing and moving forward, we should be able to do this more in the future,” said Baker, who rides on the road for the Australian BikeExchange-Jayco team.

Roy’s bronze was a satisfying turn after finishing fourth in her only track event last week.

The 36-year-old, like Baker, was more than happy to benefit from the Australian group’s teamwork.

“We didn’t have to worry about anyone in the team, we all could trust each other 100 per cent,” Roy said.

“It’s exactly what you want in a team.”

North Melbourne greats Wayne Carey and Anthony Stevens renew ugly feud at pub during premiership reunion

Two North Melbourne greats have reportedly stunned teammates with a heated bust-up and needed to be separated while at the Yarraville Railway Hotel in Melbourne for a premiership reunion on Saturday.

The feud between Wayne Carey and Anthony Stevens ripped the Kangaroos apart in 2002 after Carey’s infamous affair with Stevens’ wife, Kellie.

But the pair clashed again, despite reports their relationship had improved, at the 1996 premiership meeting after Carey allegedly accused Stevens of talking behind his back and being two-faced.

Sooooo, we have some more industrial workers doing some ‘Look down, look down’ type pushing and pulling of a very big metal structure. Looks like some sort of Mount Midoriyama.

But they’re playing Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, so all I can think of is this scene from Ocean’s 12.

Ohhhhhhhhh, it’s a worker shortage. They couldn’t lift it by themselves, and then a huge influx of immigrant families have arrived to help them lift the big horizontal metal thing into a big vertical metal thing.

It lights up with the word “TOGETHER”, pointing to Birmingham’s famed multicultural diaspora.

Watch as England’s ‘glittering’ moment spoilt as major error Forces heart-breaking ruling in 4x400m women’s relay at Commonwealth Games 2022

You couldn’t script it.

One of the most dramatic finishes to a race in Commonwealth Games history has had another post-race twist to shatter English hearts and strip their 4x400m women’s relay team of a gold medal.

Watch all the drama in the video above

Stream Seven’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games 2022 for free on 7plus >>

England thought they had hung on for a heart-stopping gold medal victory by 0.01 seconds over Canada when Jessie Knight just barely held off the fast-finishing Kyra Constantine in the very last athletics race for the Games.

The host nation had a massive lead heading into the last leg, but Constantine surged her way up to Knight, who looked gone.

But Knight had more fight left in her yet, creating one of the all-time great finishes to a race in Games history.

She mustered up everything she had to sprint to the line alongside Constantine in a finish that was far too close to call.

After waiting with bated breath, the stadium erupted when replays showed Knight had held on by the barst of margins to claim gold.

Then came the twist.

Constantine and Knight finished 0.01 seconds apart. Credit: 7Sport

After a protest, officials reviewed England’s changeover at the end of the first leg, when Jodie Williams received the baton from Victoria Ohuruogu.

During an awkward handover, Williams had inadvertently drifted over into the lane on her inside, lane two, as she was about to receive the baton and take off.

So disoriented were the two English runners that even Ohuruogu was standing in lane two as she watched her teammate run off.

The review found that the England team clearly infringed and, in such a close race, could have had a slightly unfair advantage that meant they hung on for gold, so they were stripped of their gold medal.

This was the moment England were disqualified for. Credit: 7Sport

EVERYEVENT: Check out the full Commonwealth Games schedule

TALLY MEDAL: Every gold, silver and bronze at Birmingham 2022

LATEST RESULTS: Detailed breakdown of every event at the Games

The England team completed a victory lap before having the bad news broken to them.

Athletics commentator Rob Walker said it was a clear-cut decision.

“It’s as clear as day; you cannot step on the inside,” he said.

“Possibly, because the gold, in the end, was determined by such an incredibly slender margin – maybe if they’d won it by 50 meters there wouldn’t have been a protest. But that was clear and away, and England’s glory turns to heartache.

“It was an incredible, incredible end to the race, but it is Canada’s gold in the end – and by a little more than a hundredth of a second.”

Desperate to hang on to their gold, England protested the decision, but were denied.

Athletics commentator Tim Hutchings said they had no grounds on which to protest.

“Jodie took a couple of steps inside the lane which was Canada’s lane, ironically, lane two,” he said.

“And then, once she’d set off and righted herself in the correct lane, Victoria Ohuruogu was standing in the wrong lane – that’s how disoriented they were.

“She was standing in the lane inside England’s lane as she watched Jodie Williams head off on her second leg. That compounded the infringement.”

“It was, at the time, a glittering, glittering end – the perfect end – to a wonderful six-day, 12-session bonanza of athletics,” Walker added.

But it wasn’t to be, and Canada finishes with the medal, while Jamaica was elevated to silver, and Scotland took third.
