Viewers slam Channel Seven for airing unauthorized Olivia Newton-John miniseries starring Delta Goodrem: ‘You insensitive idiots’

Channel Seven has been slammed for airing the 2018 miniseries Hopelessly Devoted to You, following the death of Olivia Newton-John at age 73.

The 2018 unauthorized biopic starring Delta Goodrem as a young Olivia didn’t go down well with grieving viewers on Tuesday night, and they were quick to vent on social media.

‘We should be honoring Olivia, not have this horrible wood duck imitation on,’ one disgruntled fan tweeted.

‘In the haste to put something on tonight Olivia Newton John related, Channel Seven miss the mark with the Olivia biopic starring Delta Goodrem,’ wrote another.

‘I’d rather watch something ACTUALLY starring Olivia, not someone pretending to be her!’ they added.

Olivia Newton-John’s heartbreak when husband Matt Lattanzi ran off with babysitter Cindy Jessup

Olivia Newton-John’s first marriage ended in heartbreak when her husband ran off with the couple’s young babysitter while the singer was fighting breast cancer.

Dancer Matt Lattanzi split with Newton-John after he was confronted over his ‘very close’ relationship with Cindy Jessup, then 23, during a cancer charity cycle ride.

The Aussie legend divorced him in 1995 and Lattanzi, then 40, married his young lover two years later – but Newton-John refused to be bitter over the split.

“She’s delighted,” a friend insisted to reporters at the time of the wedding.

‘It looks bad, because Cindy would often babysit his daughter and she was a friend of his and Olivia’s – but in those days there was no romance.’

Newton-John married American Lattanzi – 11 years younger than her – after the pair met on the set of Xanadu in 1980 when she was 32 and he was 21.

Despite the age gap, they immediately had chemistry, Newton-John revealed, and dated for four years before getting married in 1984 and had daughter Chloe in 1986.

But the marriage hit the rocks after the singer’s cancer diagnosis in 1992 and she put her career on ice to focus on her recovery.

The couple left their home in Malibu, California to move to the tranquility of their farm near idyllic Byron Bay in northern NSW, but the move ultimately killed their marriage.

‘When I had breast cancer I thought then that would be it,’ she admitted to the Daily Mail in 2005.

‘I went to my farm near Byron Bay and seriously thought about retiring.’

Lattanzi was starring in Aussie soap Paradise Beach in 1993 when the busy couple hired Jessup to help look after Chloe and she quickly became part of the family.

Jessup cycled from Sydney to Perth in 1994 in aid of Newton-John’s charity, supported on the three-month journey by the singer and her husband.

But Newton-John began to have suspicions about the relationship between Jessup and Lattanzi – and reportedly confronted him in an agonizing showdown.

The row led to Lattanzi moving in with Jessup and divorcing the singer in 1995 before he married his former babysitter in 1997, when he was 40 and she was 28.

‘I am so fortunate,’ he said at the time. ‘I couldn’t ask for a better outcome.’

Newton-John continued to blame her fight with cancer for what she said was the inevitable end of her marriage, and not her husband’s love for the babysitter.

‘I think our marriage would have eventually come to an end, but it happened sooner because of the cancer, which was a good thing,’ she told the Daily Mail.

‘It was very painful, but we were never at odds with each other.

‘We have tried to remain friendly because we have a child and we made a pact that she was the most important thing in our lives and that we would never fight over her.

‘What happened between us was between us, and we wouldn’t allow it to affect her.’

She added: ‘Divorce is never all right. Everybody wants the happy ending and the white picket fence, particularly me.

‘My own parents divorced when I was 10 and, maybe because of that, I kept putting marriage off.

‘When I did get married, I wanted it to last for ever, but that wasn’t to be.’

It was not to last for Jessup and Lattanzi either, with the couple splitting after 10 years of marriage in 2007.

Jessup’s acting career was brief and uneventful too, appearing in a little-known one-hour videos Prescription for Peril in 1999 and Tied Up All Night in 2000.

Lattanzi’s career – which saw him appear in Grease 2, starring Michelle Pfeiffer in 1982, the flop follow up to Newton-John and John Travolta’s original global smash – also ground to a halt in the wake of his split with Newton-John.

He never worked again on screen following his Paradise Beach stint in 1993 and is now 63, remarried, and living in Oregon in the US.

His third wife Michelle was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2014 but is in remission and the couple now run the 115-acre Laughing Dog medicinal cannabis farm.

Michelle Lattanzi paid tribute to her husband’s ex-wife on social media on Tuesday, saying the world had lost an icon.

‘Today we lost one of the world’s greats Olivia Newton-John,’ she posted on behalf of the couple.

‘Matt and I are so overwhelmed with the love and gratitude shared with us by friends, family and a deeply loving community of fans who will all miss Olivia’s presence in this world.

‘I have heard truly lovely stories and memories from people near and far, and honor in each of you where those feelings and memories come from.

‘Nothing will replace the icon we lost, yet her legacy is alive and well in our hearts and memories, as well as her contributions to our global culture, her beloved daughter Chloe Lattanzi, and her cancer research and wellness center in Melbourne.

‘Please honor your sadness, and then celebrate the joy that Olivia’s heart and lifetime achievements endowed in our world.

‘Sending all kinds of love.’

The family of Australian icon Olivia Newton-John is still in talks with the Victorian government about how the state will honor the late singer.

“An absolutely supreme talent, a person of grace, a person of such energy and vitality.

“She took her cancer journey and used that to save lives and change lives.”

On Wednesday a spokesperson for the Premier said they were still talking to the family and no formal offer of a service had been made yet.

‘Gosh, life is a gift and I’ve had an amazing life and I intend to keep going with it and I want to help other people with cancer of course,’ she told DailyMail.com in the January 2020 interview.

‘I have my wellness center in Melbourne and I want to see an end to cancer in my lifetime so other people don’t have to suffer.’

Newton-John was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992 but announced she had overcome the cancer in 2013, the year after her Wellness Center first opened.

But in May 2017, she was told cancer had metastasized and spread to her bones.

Reflecting on her fight to beat the condition, she admitted: ‘I don’t see it as a battle. I don’t think about it a lot, to be honest.

Newton-John also reflected on her delight at still being remembered for Grease over four decades after its release.

She confessed: ‘We did something very special together. That movie is still loved.’

She recalled how caring Travolta was during the filming of the musical romantic film.

Asked about her favorite memory on set, she relied: ‘His kindness to me. When there was one scene in the movie – it was my close up, when Rizzo pulls me forward in the bonfire scene – and in the middle of my take, he stopped it and came over to me and whispered in my ear: “I think you can do better.”

Newton-John famously resisted the part of Sandy in the 1978 movie Grease. She was 28 at the time and thought she was too old to play a fresh-faced high school student

‘So that’s really generous. For an actor to do that for another actor. I wasn’t as experienced as him. He was very nurturing and sweet.’

During that same event, lifelong friend and Grease co-star Travolta praised her positive outlook on life, despite her health worries.

He said: ‘Olivia is a survivor and she’s smart and she’s got a lot of life in her and I think she looks at it from the glass half full always and that’s her beautiful, natural approach towards life and I think we all need to do that.’

He was among the first to pay tribute to her on Monday.

Carlo Bonomi, Italian vocal actor for claymation Pingu dies aged 85

Tributes are flowing for Carlo Bonomi, the actor behind the voice of children’s claymation character Pingu, after he died on the weekend at the age of 85.

Remembered for his “noot noot” phrase, the Italian vocal actor passed away in Milan on August 6 with the cause of his death unknown, publication AF News reports.

Australians knew Bonomi for his “Penguinese”, the language spoken in stop-motion series Pingu which aired six seasons between 1986 to 2006.

Bonomi was the unscripted voice behind all the show’s characters for four seasons, before he was replaced by vocal actors David Sant and Marcello Magni when the show was renewed for seasons five and six.

Pingu is about a young penguin who sometimes gets up to mischief on his family’s polar ice cap in Antarctica.

Fans have praised the late actor for his service as a children’s entertainer by sharing pictures and videos of Bonomi online.

“RIP Carlo Bonomi, thank you for your service in children’s entertainment and for giving my childhood some light to shine in the dark,” one fan posted to Twitter.

“May the Noot Noots never fade from our memories.”

Meanwhile American cartoonist Travis Bickerstaff said Bonomi’s legacy will live on through others.

“If you’re wondering if this will be the end of Pinguit’s not,” Bickerstaff wrote.

“Other voice actors in the Pingu franchise had carried on Bonomi’s legacy, since he established the ‘Penguinese’ language for the series.”

Bonomi was also well-known in Italy as the voice behind the announcements played at Central Station and Florence Santa Maria Novella Station, which were used up until 2008.

He also played a part in a number of Italian shorts, including line animation The Line, The Line.

And in 2005 Newton-John’s then-boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, disappeared at sea while on a fishing trip off the coast of California. He was never found — an unsolved mystery that haunted the singer for years.

“It’s very hard to live with that,” she told CNN’s Larry King in 2006. “It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve been through a lot of things.” Although her career profile dimmed in her later years, Newton-John never stopped recording and performing. Among her highlights were her guest appearances on “Glee,” a long-running “Summer Nights” residence at the Flamingo Las Vegas and a dance-club hit, “You Have to Believe,” recorded with her daughter Ella Chloe.

“I love to sing, it’s all I know how to do,” she told CNN in 2017. “That’s all I’ve ever done since I was 15, so it’s my life. I feel very grateful that I can still do it and people still come to see me.”

Olivia Newton-John death: Mystery of Patrick McDermott, one-time lover who vanished at sea

The mysterious fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover haunted the singer in her later years after he disappeared without trace – amid lurid claims he faked his own death.

Patrick McDermott, 48, went on an overnight fishing trip with 22 other people on June 30, 2005, but vanished before he returned to dry land without anyone noticing.

For almost two decades afterwards, he was rumored to be in hiding in Mexico, on the run from crushing debts.

But repeated manhunts by police, media and private detectives have never been able to find any conclusive proof, despite constant reports of him being spotted.

‘I don’t think I will ever really be at peace with it,’ Newton-John admitted.

‘I think there will always be a question mark.’

The mysterious fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover Patrick McDermott haunted the singer in her later years after he disappeared without trace amid claims he faked his own death

She hooked up with McDermott after her 1995 divorce from first husband Matt Lattanzi and began a nine-year on-off romance with the cameraman.

Newton-John was on a promotional tour in Australia when McDermott disappeared and it was another week after the fishing trip until it was noticed he had gone.

Crew on his fishing boat had found the American’s car keys, passport and wallet on board the boat and his car was found parked at the San Pedro marina in Los Angeles.

But still no-one realized he was missing until he failed to appear at a family event on July 6, with police finally called in on July 11.

By then though the trail had gone cold – and investigators turned up nothing.

McDermott had previously been briefly married and fathered a son, and a court had recently ordered him to pay $8,000 in backdated child support.

He had filed for bankruptcy with debts of more than $30,000, prompting speculation he’d faked his death to escape and start anew.

A Coast Guard inquiry admitted they ‘did not find any evidence of criminal action, suicide, accident or hoax in the disappearance of McDermott.’

A three-year probe into the ‘Freedom’ fishing boat found it didn’t carry out any head counts on the day of the trip, causing McDermott’s disappearance to go unnoticed.

Both probes concluded McDermott was likely lost at sea during the night.

But eye witnesses continued to report seeing him around Mexico, where he was said to be living on a yacht off the coast of Sayulita and Acapulco.

TV companies repeatedly sent teams of undercover film crews and private detectives to hunt for him and set up sophisticated online website traps to trace him.

For almost two decades afterwards, he was rumored to be in hiding in Mexico, on the run from crushing debts and said to be living on a yacht off the Mexican coast at Sayulita

One investigator John Nazarian insisted in 2016: ‘It’s rumored he was with a German national. I spoke to people there.

‘The girl he was traveling with was described as having a German accent.

‘To come up with the conclusion that he fell off the boat, and allegedly no-one saw him fall off the boat, is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.’

All the manhunts proved fruitless though and McDermott remained elusive.

Photographs of a man and a woman said to be McDermott and his new lover in Mexico were published in 2017 by New Idea magazine.

But the claims were undone weeks later when a Canadian couple came forward to say they were the people in the photograph.

But the mystery continued to stalk her in the years that followed, although she had resigned herself to the fact McDermott was most probably dead.

‘He was lost at sea, and nobody really knows what happened,’ Newton-John told 60 Minutes in 2016.

‘It’s human to wonder. Because whenever you go through difficult times, there’s always those concerns.

‘Those are the things in life you have to accept and let go. Of course questions always come up and that’s human.

‘But you know, I live on.’

WHAT HAPPENED TO OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN’S LOST LOVER?

Theories have raged for almost two decades about the fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover, movie cameraman Patrick McDermott, 48.

He vanished on an overnight 22-hour fishing trip on the boat ‘Freedom’ out of San Pedro marina in Los Angeles on June 30, 2005.

The boat’s crew found his car keys, wallet and passport on board after all the other passengers disembarked the following day, and his car was found parked nearby.

The crew hadn’t done a headcount so no-one noticed he was missing for another week when he failed to turn up for a family event, with police alerted almost a week later..

Since then speculation has raged about what happened to him, with investigators unable to find any evidence of a crime, suicide, hoax or an accident on the fishing trip.

Officials believe he simply fell overboard and drowned, but conspiracy theorists insist he may have had another boat lined up to meet him offshore.

Others believe he may have planted his belongings on the boat before slipping off, possibly before it even left port, without any noticing.

Private detectives set up a website FindPatrickMcDermott.com to try to trap the missing American into giving himself away, identifying the location of everyone who accessed the site.

A flurry of web traffic from the Sayulita area of Mexico’s West Coast sparked a hunt for him there without any success.

Others say they spotted him living on a yacht off the coast of Acapulco, 1000km further south.

One investigator claimed to have found him and spoken with him in 2009, claiming he just wanted to be left alone but the claim was unsubstantiated.

Another claimed to have categorical proof he was alive and was on the verge of revealing it – but never did.

Over the years there have been at least 20 sightings of him in Mexico and Central America, but many have proven false.

One set of pictures of a couple alleged to be the distinctive looking McDermott – who was half-Korean and adopted at the age of two – turned out to be a Canadian couple.

His ex-wife Yvette Nipar, the mother of their son Chance, begged for the speculation to end for the sake of their child.

She pleaded with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to block the publication of a book by private eye Philip Klein about her ex’s disappearance.

‘My son has been through enough emotional torment over this,’ Nipar wrote, branding Klein a ‘serial liar’.

‘He has yet to be able to move on.due to Mr Klein’s continual effort to keep him in the public eye.

‘Let him rest in peace.’

Vanessa Amorosi stops Sunrise interview after Olivia Newton-John’s death

Australian singer Vanessa Amorosi appeared overcome with emotion and had to bow out of her live interview on Sunrise this morning, having only just learned of the death of Olivia Newton-John.

Amorosi was booked to appear on the program to discuss her new single, having just performed at the closing ceremony of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

But with Newton-John’s death aged 73 after a long cancer battle being the biggest news of the morning, Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch were keen to first ask Amorosi about her memories of the star.

“It is an incredibly sad day – Vanessa, what are your memories?” Barr asked as they crossed to the Aussie singer in Birmingham.

“Uh… I don’t know. I don’t particularly want to think about it, because I’ll get very emotional,” Amorosi began. “I just literally had one of the highest endorphins that just happened out there (at the closing ceremony), to being extremely sad coming offstage and checking my phone. I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet.”

Koch said he’d give Amorosi a chance to “compose” her thoughts about the late music legend, and changed tack to discuss her Commonwealth Games performance and new single.

A few minutes later, and with the interview nearing its end, the hosts moved the topic of conversation back to Olivia Newton-John.

“We know it’s a sad day for you and so many people, but we wanted to show this photo from quite a few years ago of you, Olivia Newton-John and Tina Arena,” Barr said, as a photo of the three Aussie singers at the Sydney 2000 Olympics appeared on screen.

“Can you talk us through those memories, that time, Vanessa?”
Amorosi gave it her best – but soon became overcome with emotion.

“Both of these women I have looked up to since (I was) a kid… I don’t know. I’m actually very sad about Olivia, to be honest. It’s..”

With that, she bowed her head and raised her hand, signaling the interview to stop.

Barr and Koch thanked her for her time – and Barr noted how hard it must’ve been to learn the news between a live performance and a live TV interview.

“I’m horrible. I feel for her, after coming off that.”

It’s been an emotional morning on breakfast television as friends, colleagues and fans of Newton-John have reacted to the news of her death in real time, after it broke at around 5:30am AEST.

Over on Nine, veteran entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins at first held it together as he reported the sad news on Today – but later in the morning, he was overcome with emotion, sobbing as host Karl Stefanovic rushed to comfort him.

And back on Sunriseanother emotional live interview, this time on the streets of Los Angeles with Grease casting director Joel Thurm, who wept openly as he described his fond memories of Newton-John.

The British-born, Melbourne-raised entertainer had waged a decades-long battle against cancer, which returned again in 2013.

In May 2017, she announced her breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her sacrum, and in 2018, it was revealed she was again battling the disease.

In October last year, Newton-John revealed that she was battling Stage 4 breast cancer but was managing the pain with medical marijuana.

Then today came the news fans had been fearing for years: Newton-John had died at her Southern Californian ranch, surrounded by loved ones, including her husband, John Easterling, and daughter, Chloe Lattanzi.

Chloe has today paid tribute to her late mum on social media – who she just days ago referred to as her “best friend.”

When there was one scene in the movie – it was my close up, when Rizzo pulls me forward in the bonfire scene – and in the middle of my take, he stopped it and came over to me and whispered in my ear: “I think you can do better.”

‘And I’d love to take that to a broader audience so people can share their experiences and share the things that they are doing that are helping them.

‘I’m in a very happy place. My baby has been born, the foundation has been born and now we can move forward and raise the funds so that we can find the best scientists and researchers to do the studies.’

She often promoted the use of cannabis and gardening as key to fending off cancer symptoms.

‘My husband’s a plant medicine man so he grew cannabis for me and made tinctures for me to take for pain and inflammation and so many other things that cannabis can do.

‘It’s been a maligned plant all these years and it really is a magical miracle plant.’

Olivia said using marijuana was a ‘no brainer.’ rather than popping pills and taking steroid creams.

‘It helped me a lot with pain, because, you know, I don’t like taking prescription drugs, so it’s kind of a no-brainer.

‘It is kind and it’s compassionate. It’s what should be available for everybody to use.’
