Woolworths worker pays for a mother’s groceries leaving her ‘grateful and mortified’

Woolies worker’s selfless act leaves a young mother ‘grateful and also mortified’ – but was the staff member just being nice or were they up to something ‘DODGY’?

  • A Woolworths shopper claims she had a staff member pay for her groceries
  • The mother said that her baby ‘kicking off’ prompted the worker to offer to pay
  • She broke down the details of the strange transaction in a post to Reddit

The mother, who was carrying her newborn while she was shopping at a Melbourne Woolworths, and had to go to a service desk because of a technical issue she was having with the self-checkout.

Struggling with moving her crying baby and the trolley, a Woolies staff member offered to pay for her groceries in light of the inconvenience.

She explained the details of the strange transaction in a post to Reddit last Thursday and asked other shoppers if they felt it was a ‘dodgy’ thing to do?

‘I just got back from Woolworths where I tried to pay with my phone on self checkout,’ the mother wrote.

‘It wasn’t working so they printed me a barcode and took me to the service desk to pay, but my phone payment still didn’t work.

‘After trying a few times and my newborn kicking off, the staff member said, don’t worry it’s on me.’

The mother said she was ‘really taken back’ by the generous offer and asked the worker if she could transfer her the money.

She claimed the employee declined the offer and responded and insisted it was no problem.

‘I was so grateful and also mortified,’ the mother said.

She questioned whether Woolworths staff members can pay for customers groceries legally or if it was ‘dodgy’.

‘I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but don’t want to get her in trouble if she’s done something she’s not supposed to have done,’ she added.

Respondents in the Reddit post largely agreed that the woman should be thankful for the kind gesture and not bring attention to it at the store in case the staff member gets into trouble.

‘Maybe accept the kindness shown and pay it forward to someone else in need. In that way, you don’t risk getting the staff member in trouble,’ one commenter said.

Another person wrote: ‘Yeah, don’t go back and thank her manager and unwittingly have her fired. It’s a good intention that may backfire. Instead, next time you see her, thank her yourself.’

A third added: ‘What’s more likely? They risk being sacked or even arrested for a total stranger, or pays a few bucks to help out someone obviously trying their best but struggling.’

‘My partner works at a supermarket and has paid for people before. It feels good. Pay it forward.’

Others disagreed with the act and claimed the employee likely voided the transaction.

‘She wouldn’t have paid. Technically, it’s not the right thing to do but also Woolies wouldn’t risk the bad PR of firing an employee over helping someone with a screaming baby,’ said one.

‘Yeah that transaction 100% got voided. More than likely she just wanted that screaming baby out of the store ASAP because parents never try and quieten them, ‘she wrote her a second.

A handful of commenters revealed they had personally paid for other shopper’s groceries before usually because of a technical issue or the customer struggled to afford it.

How Dr. Martens boots may have saved White House lightning strike survivor

The lone survivor of the lightning strike that killed three people outside the White House was saved by quick-thinking Secret Service agents — and her Dr. Martens boots, according to her mom.

Californian student Amber Escudero-Kontostathis was struck last Thursday while raising money in Washington, DC, for refugees — even though it was her 28th birthday.

While three others were killed in the strike — including a fellow young Californian — Escudero-Kontostathis was revived by agents who raced to the scene with a defibrillator, her mom, Julie Escudero, told the Ventura County Star.

“The Secret Service men saved her,” Escudero said. “I’ve been trying to find out their names so I can personally thank them. They revived her.”

In a series of emotional Facebook updates, Escudero detailed how doctors believe the lightning that struck her daughter “went through her toes and out her left arm.”

That likely meant her daughter was saved by the thick rubber “Airwair” soles on Dr. Martens’ boots absorbing some of the impact, her mom speculated.

Escudero-Kontostathis — who was with her husband, Achilles, in DC — has already left intensive care and taken her first steps unaided, said her mom, who flew from California to be by her daughter’s side.

“The trauma doctor came up [Friday] and said she’s an ‘absolute miracle,’” her mom told the local outlet.

In her Facebook posts, Escudero also detailed how her daughter “is literally blowing all the doctors away with the progress her body is making.”

Still, she is suffering “unbearable” pain from a large burn on her stomach that makes it feel like it’s “on fire” — and is suffering crushing “survivor’s guilt” after learning the three others hit all died, her mom said.

Escudero-Kontostathis had a Monday meeting scheduled with a trauma counselor.

And she has also “made the connection to the other 3 wonderful people who passed,” her mom said, referring to bank VP Brooks Lambertson, 29, as well as James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, childhood sweethearts from Wisconsin celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary.

“She wants to reach out to their families,” her mom said Monday. “She cares so much for others, it will be hard for her.”

Escudero-Kontostathis is also anxious about missing the start of her masters-degree course at John Hopkins at the end of this month.

Escudero said she was “beyond grateful and humbled” that friends had started a GoFundMe that as of Monday afternoon had raised more than $40,000 to help with medical costs.

“I literally fell to my knees when I saw the GoFundMe page. I truly have no words!” she said.

Biden says ‘inflation’ bill funds healthcare, ‘God knows what else’ in bizarre speech

President Biden seemed unfamiliar Monday with the specifics of the massive spending bill dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act that Senate Democrats passed Sunday, saying only that it funds healthcare “and God knows what else.”

Moments earlier, the president misstated the size of last year’s $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure spending law while touring flood damage in Kentucky.

“We’ve never done this before, but because of a number of things we got done on a bipartisan basis — like a billion, two hundred million-dollar infrastructure project — like what we’re doing today, we passed yesterday, helping take care of everything from health care to God knows what else,” said Biden, standing in front of a flood-damaged home on his first official trip since recovering from a “rebound” case of COVID-19.

“What we’re going to do is — we’re going to see, for example, they got to put a new water line in the community,” the president stumbled. “There’s no reason why they can’t at the same time be digging a line that puts in a whole new modern line for Internet connections. why? Why can’t we do that? So it’s going to be different. We’re going to come back better than before.”

Biden spoke for only about four minutes, much of the time with his back to cameras as he looked around at buildings and people impacted by the recent flooding.

At one point in his remarks, the president — who turns 80 in November — suggested it may become possible to control the weather, before jokingly telling his destitute storm-ravaged audience, which included the commonwealth’s Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), that it was time to “run laps.”

“We’re all Americans. Everybody has an obligation to help. We have the capacity to do this. It’s not like it’s beyond our control. The weather may be out beyond our control for now. But it’s not beyond our control,” Biden said.

The Senate-passed legislation, which is expected to pass the House of Representatives as early as Friday, provides nearly $400 billion for environmental programs, including tax credits of up to $7,000 to buy electric vehicles, and roughly $64 billion to extend more generous COVID- 19-era Obamacare subsidies.

The spending is offset by new taxes on corporations, including a new 15% corporate minimum tax, increased IRS enforcement and allowing Medicare to directly negotiate drug prices.

Body of judge Jeremiah Bueker recovered from lake: deputies

An Arkansas judge drowned in a lake during a weekend getaway with family and friends, authorities said.

The body of Arkansas County Northern District Judge Jeremiah T. Bueker was recovered early Sunday from the bottom of Mud Lake in Jefferson County, sheriff officials said in a statement. He was 48.

The judge was spending time with several relatives and friends during a “recreational” outing over the weekend when he ventured off alone, authorities said.

“After time had passed and no one had seen or heard from Bueker, worry to set in,” sheriff officials said Sunday.

Bueker was last seen near Mud Lake, which dumps into the Arkansas River just north of Reydell. The judge’s family then called 911 after they couldn’t find him on Saturday.

Jefferson County deputies launched extensive ground and water searches for Bueker that were later suspended due to low visibility. Mud Lake was then scoured just after sunrise Sunday and a sonar detected the judge’s body at the bottom, authorities said.

Bueker’s death is being probed as an accidental drowning, but his body is being sent to a state medical examiner for an autopsy, authorities said.

“Deputies utilized subsurface body recovery drag/rescue hooks to recover Bueker’s body,” authorities said. “Upon recovery of the body, deputies and investigators with the assistance of family positively identified the body as that of Bueker.”

Bueker’s death is being probed as an accidental drowning, but his body is being sent to a state medical examiner for an autopsy, authorities said.

Sheriff Lafayette Woods said he hoped the recovery of Bueker’s body provides “some sense of closure” to his family and loved ones.

“The scour of emotions they must feel right now is devastating,” Woods said.

Stuttgart Mayor Norma Strabala, meanwhile, said she was “shocked and heartbroken” by Bueker’s sudden death.

“Jeremy was an important and special person in this community, serving as a good friend, fierce attorney, and as Arkansas County Northern District Court Judge for nearly a decade,” Strabala wrote on Facebook. “I am praying for Sunny, her family and this community as we mourn this tragic loss.”

Bueker, who was elected as a district judge in 2012, was an “avid outdoorsman” and a “very proud father,” a Stuttgart city official told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

He was last seen alive late Saturday, authorities told the outlet.

“His family had a weekend at a cabin on the family’s property,” said Maj. Gary McClain of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “They were riding [utility vehicles] and returned back to the cabin. It appears he decided to go swimming after maybe being dusty and he went missing. No one was with him; he was alone.”

Relatives said Bueker loved to swim, so taking a spontaneous dip would not have been unusual for him, McClain added.

Family of LA crash victim Asherey Ryan addresses driver

The sister of the pregnant woman who died in a California car crash that killed five other people said the family has forgiven the driver arrested in the fatal collision.

Sha’seana Kerr — whose sister Asherey Ryan was among the victims in the Thursday wreck — expressed sympathy for Nicole Lorraine Linton, 37, who allegedly caused the crash after she blew a red light at a Los Angeles intersection.

“I just want to tell her that we forgive her,” Kerr told news station KTLA.

“She will have to live with this for the rest of her life. That’s why she was spared. We understand it already.”

On Thursday about 1:40 pm, a Mercedes-Benz sped through a red light before it slammed into through traffic, video of the tragic crash obtained by RMG News shows.

Investigators allege that Linton – a nurse with Kaiser Permanente’s West Los Angeles Medical Center – was driving over 100 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, Fox 11 reported.

Six minors and two adults were also injured in the wreck.

In the interview Saturday, Ryan’s sister said she was her “first best friend.”

“The first person I knew. The first person I probably had a conversation with,” she said at a gathering at the site of the crash. She’s my only big sister. Every day we take our sons outside and we walk them around the block. Cada dia. The neighbors know us. Today, I had to take that walk alone with my son.”

Top Pakistan Taliban leader killed in Afghanistan roadside attack | Pakistan Taliban News

Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was allegedly behind some of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan in recent years.

A late night roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan has struck a vehicle carrying members of the Pakistan Taliban, killing a senior leader and three other members of the group, several Pakistani officials and the group said.

Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was a top commander of the Pakistan Taliban and was allegedly behind some of the deadliest attacks in recent years.

Wali’s vehicle was struck on Sunday night by a roadside bomb in the Afghan province of Paktika, along the border with Pakistan, according to Pakistani officials and the TTP members who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press news agency.

The three other men who were killed included his driver and two of his close aides, they said.

Wali’s death delivers a big blow to the armed group, known formally as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and comes a week after a US drone raid in Kabul killed al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the Sunday night killing of Wali, who was on the US State Department’s most-wanted list and carried a reward of up to $3m for information on his whereabouts.

Pakistan Taliban on Monday confirmed the killing and blamed Pakistani intelligence agents for it, without offering evidence or elaborating.

A longer statement from the TTP is expected later on Monday.

Wali is thought to have been close to al-Qaeda founding leader Osama bin Laden and al-Zawahiri but it was not immediately known if there was any link between the August 1 drone attack and Sunday night’s bombing.

In 2014, Wali broke away from TTP and formed his own group, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which carried out some of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan, including a bombing in the eastern city of Lahore in 2016 that killed at least 75 people from the minority Christian community on Easter Sunday.

The group also claimed responsibility for killing two Pakistani employees of the US Consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar in March 2016.

Khorasani later dissolved Jamaat-ul-Ahrar and rejoined the TTP in the group’s drive to reunify several alienated groups.

The US State Department described him as a former journalist and poet who studied at several religious schools in Pakistan.

There has been a fragile truth between Islamabad and the TTP for the past two months as peace talks brokered by the Afghan Taliban’s Haqqani network take place.

The TTP has launched armed attacks in Pakistan during the past 14 years, fighting for stricter enforcement of Islamic laws in the country, the release of their members who are in government custody and a reduction of the Pakistani military presence in the country’s tribal-dominated regions .

The group has killed nearly 80,000 Pakistanis in almost two decades of violence, according to official estimates.

Islamabad has demanded that the new Taliban rulers next door prevent armed groups from using Afghan territory for attacks inside Pakistan.

Before the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, Islamabad and Kabul often traded blame and accused each other of sheltering armed groups.

Pakistan says it has finished the construction of more than 93 percent of a fence along the border with Afghanistan to prevent cross-border attacks.

Dermatologist Yue Yu arrested for allegedly poisoning husband

A Southern California dermatologist was arrested last week for allegedly poisoning her husband, police said.

Yue Yu, who has an office in Mission Viejo, was busted Thursday after Irvine police served a search warrant at the couple’s home.

Investigators said Yu’s husband turned over “video evidence” backing up his belief that she’s the reason he’s been sick for a month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The unidentified husband “sustained significant internal injuries,” but is expected to recover, police said.

Yu, 45, is affiliated with Providence Mission Hospital, which issued a statement noting her arrest while saying staffers were cooperating with authorities.

“The incident is a domestic matter which occurred in Irvine and we want to reassure our community that there has been no impact on our patients,” hospital officials said.

Yu’s biography was apparently removed from the hospital’s website as of Sunday.

Yu, whose bail was set at $30,000, was released from custody late Friday after posting bond, online records show. No additional details of the allegations were available Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Yu’s husband told police he suspected she had been poisoning him and set up surveillance video to confirm his hunch, Irvine police Lt. Bill Bingham told the Orange County Register.

Yu, who attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, is due to appear in court on Monday. It’s unclear if she’s hired an attorney who could comment on her behalf of her.

Yu and her husband have been married for 10 years. It’s unclear how she allegedly poisoned him, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Geraldton hairdresser Kim Tran takes a stand to stop harassment and requests for sexual favors

WARNING: GRAPHIC FOOTAGE

A Geraldton hairdresser is fed up with a regular barrage of vulgar harassment she is forced to deal with from men seeking sexual favours, and has called out those who see her as nothing but an Asian “stereotype”.

Mother of one Kim Tran owns a barber shop in the suburb of Rangeway and last week posted a confronting insight into the overwhelming objectification that comes her way.

She resorted to publicly posting one of many text messages — with a phone number included — she has received from customers, requesting extra services. In this instance, the man asked for a “shave and a trim with a happy ending”.

Ms Tran has even put signs up around her store, reminding certain people she is a “hairdresser only”, but still gets these offensive requests almost on a daily basis, both in person and via text messages.

The 29-year-old works two jobs — running a farm with her partner supplying vegetables to Australian supermarkets, as well as her day job at the barber shop, where many of her clients are children and their parents.

Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

She said she was losing sleep over the frequent abuse and vulgarity, and decided it was time to speak up so people know she’s just a hairdresser, no more.

“I am often looked down on by others because I am Asian,” Ms Tran posted. “Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

“I believe there are many other women who have the same problem as me, but the difference is that they don’t dare to say it, maybe because they are shy or don’t want other people to judge them. I feel that isn’t right.”

She works in her salon alone and often keeps her door locked due to constant fear of abuse and break-ins.

“When I have customers I’m confident and keep the door unlocked, but when I’m in here by myself, or with children, I lock the door,” she said.

The Vietnamese woman said she believed the harassment was because of her culture and unfair stereotypes surrounding Asian women.

She claims men show her pornographic images on their phones to make her understand, and said there were instances when men would grope her, despite her not wearing revealing clothing.

“Lots of people come in here and sometimes try and touch me, grab me,” she said.

Ms Tran shared a shocking incident captured on her shop’s CCTV camera, showing a client trying to grope her as he exited the store.

Ms Tran said the text messages she received were taking a toll on her relationship with her partner, and she decided to speak up on social media to save her job and reputation.

“We had a massive argument last week and I told him I was going public. I was nervous because I was worried that they (customers) would make a problem with me. But I thought if I don’t speak it could affect my relationship or my job,” she said.

“What is my daughter going to think when she grows up? I don’t want her to think I am a sex worker or prostitute.”

Ms Tran said she feared if she reported the incidents to the police that people would take revenge on her or her family.

“Sometimes I feel like if I report them they might come back and do something to me,” she said.

Ms Tran said moving to a different location would be difficult because she had built a clientele over two-and-a-half years, and she had customers who supported her business.

I’m getting a little bit scared, and I don’t want to lose this business because I love what I’m doing.

She said many people misunderstood Asian people and often believed the assumptions or stereotypes associated with the culture.

“People go to Asia for a quick trip and be with a girl for a couple nights and pay cheap money. So people think ‘oh, she’s an Asian girl and maybe she does that’, ”she said.

“It has been very rough times here.

“I have so many local people come and support me. I love to cut hair for children, they are so happy when I cut a spiderweb or a design.”

Ms Tran said when she began at the store she felt comfortable working on her own, but now her emotions ran high and she constantly overthought scenarios.

To cope with the sexual harassment, Ms Tran visits a local counseling service and takes sleeping medication.

“I’m getting a little bit scared, and I don’t want to lose this business because I love what I’m doing. So I just ignore it and do what I’m doing,” she said.

Watch as England’s ‘glittering’ moment spoilt as major error Forces heart-breaking ruling in 4x400m women’s relay at Commonwealth Games 2022

You couldn’t script it.

One of the most dramatic finishes to a race in Commonwealth Games history has had another post-race twist to shatter English hearts and strip their 4x400m women’s relay team of a gold medal.

Watch all the drama in the video above

Stream Seven’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games 2022 for free on 7plus >>

England thought they had hung on for a heart-stopping gold medal victory by 0.01 seconds over Canada when Jessie Knight just barely held off the fast-finishing Kyra Constantine in the very last athletics race for the Games.

The host nation had a massive lead heading into the last leg, but Constantine surged her way up to Knight, who looked gone.

But Knight had more fight left in her yet, creating one of the all-time great finishes to a race in Games history.

She mustered up everything she had to sprint to the line alongside Constantine in a finish that was far too close to call.

After waiting with bated breath, the stadium erupted when replays showed Knight had held on by the barst of margins to claim gold.

Then came the twist.

Constantine and Knight finished 0.01 seconds apart. Credit: 7Sport

After a protest, officials reviewed England’s changeover at the end of the first leg, when Jodie Williams received the baton from Victoria Ohuruogu.

During an awkward handover, Williams had inadvertently drifted over into the lane on her inside, lane two, as she was about to receive the baton and take off.

So disoriented were the two English runners that even Ohuruogu was standing in lane two as she watched her teammate run off.

The review found that the England team clearly infringed and, in such a close race, could have had a slightly unfair advantage that meant they hung on for gold, so they were stripped of their gold medal.

This was the moment England were disqualified for. Credit: 7Sport

TALLY MEDAL: Every gold, silver and bronze at Birmingham 2022

LATEST RESULTS: Detailed breakdown of every event at the Games

The England team completed a victory lap before having the bad news broken to them.

Athletics commentator Rob Walker said it was a clear-cut decision.

“It’s as clear as day; you cannot step on the inside,” he said.

“Possibly, because the gold, in the end, was determined by such an incredibly slender margin – maybe if they’d won it by 50 meters there wouldn’t have been a protest. But that was clear and away, and England’s glory turns to heartache.

“It was an incredible, incredible end to the race, but it is Canada’s gold in the end – and by a little more than a hundredth of a second.”

Desperate to hang on to their gold, England protested the decision, but were denied.

Athletics commentator Tim Hutchings said they had no grounds on which to protest.

“Jodie took a couple of steps inside the lane which was Canada’s lane, ironically, lane two,” he said.

“And then, once she’d set off and righted herself in the correct lane, Victoria Ohuruogu was standing in the wrong lane – that’s how disoriented they were.

“She was standing in the lane inside England’s lane as she watched Jodie Williams head off on her second leg. That compounded the infringement.”

“It was, at the time, a glittering, glittering end – the perfect end – to a wonderful six-day, 12-session bonanza of athletics,” Walker added.

But it wasn’t to be, and Canada finishes with the medal, while Jamaica was elevated to silver, and Scotland took third.

‘Calm down’: WA Premier Mark McGowan issues stern warning to China

China’s aggression after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan was “a bit over the top”, according to West Australian Premier Mark McGowan, who urged Beijing to “calm down”.

Ms Pelosi recently became the most senior US official to visit Taipei in decades and met with President Tsai Ing-wen, but it sparked outrage from China that does not recognize Taiwan as a nation.

Mr McGowan repeatedly clashed with the Morrison government – and especially former Defense Minister Peter Dutton – over their rhetoric towards China, which is WA’s biggest trading partner.

While he refused to say whether Ms Pelosi’s visit was appropriate, Mr McGowan said he was “obviously” concerned about tensions in the region.

“The reaction has been a bit over the top and I think there needs to be a calm down on the part of China,” Mr McGowan told reporters on Monday.

“I don’t know the circumstances as to why she went there… but I don’t think the reaction should have been as strong as it was.”

Since Ms Pelosi’s visit last week, the Chinese military has conducted sea and air exercises to show its ability to launch an attack on Taiwan.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has condemned China’s actions.

Meanwhile, Mr McGowan has backed WA Defense Industries Minister Paul Papalia in pushing for a greater military presence in the state.

It comes after retired Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston and former defense minister Stephen Smith were chosen to review the Australian Defense Force’s capabilities.

Mr McGowan said having more army and air force teams in WA was appropriate “just in case in the long-term future something happened”.
