$9 for milk and $84 for instant coffee: The Aussies hit hardest by soaring grocery costs

Milk costing more than $9 and a tin of instant coffee for an astounding $84. These are real prices – and they show just how dire things are for some Aussie shoppers.

Consumers all across the country are being hit by the cost-of-living crisis, which has sent the price of everyday goods such as lettuce and milk soaring.

But shocking photos shared to social media show how grocery bills cost more in some places – and expose just how dire the situation has become.

Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >>

One photo of an April receipt from a store in the town of Kaltukatjara, southwest of Alice Springs, showed a two liter carton of milk costing $9.20.

At a Sydney Woolworths, the same product was being sold for just $3.10 this week.

Donna Donzow, an operations manager for the non-profit EON Foundation which helps grow and supply fresh produce to communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, said she noticed the unusually high grocery prices in June when she was in Minyerri, a town 240km southeast of Katherine.

“The cost of a mixed salad pack was $17,” Donzow told 7NEWS.com.au.

By comparison, a mixed bag of salad at a Sydney Woolworths this week cost just $3.

The high grocery prices in remote areas are due to a range of issues including long supply chains, poor quality roads and freight costs – and experts say more needs to be done to sort out the problem.

A long-time problem

Food has cost more in the regions than in our biggest cities for years – as photos on social media show.

One photo shared in 2020 showed a tin of instant coffee selling at a Hope Vale grocery store, in remote Queensland, for $84, according to the poster.

According to a 2021 report by healthcare policy organization Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (Amsant), food in supermarkets is 56 per cent more expensive in remote communities than in regional supermarkets.

A 2020 inquiry by federal MP Julian Leeser echoed these findings, stating that “the cost of purchasing food is considerably higher for remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities than for people living in larger population centers in urban and regional Australia”.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the cost of groceries has increased by 5.9 per cent across all of Australia’s capital cities since June last year – and there’s reason to believe costs are also going up in rural Australia, where prices were already astronomically high.

In Minyerri, for instance, Donzow said she saw signs around the shop advising community members of that fruit and vegetable costs had gone up due to flooding in Australia’s southern states.

EON Foundation executive chair Caroline de Mori said she’d had a similar experience.

“I heard people complaining the other day about a lettuce for sale in Sydney for $8, but can you imagine what it’s like when you go a few thousand kilometers inland?” de Mori said.

“You end up paying $12 for one brown-headed broccoli.”

‘It’s only getting worse’

The enormous costs aren’t just an issue for getting food on the table now – they have flow-on effects for the future.

De Mori told 7NEWS.com.au that the lack of cheap fruit and vegetables meant some shoppers were turning to processed food.

“By the time it all gets (to remote communities) it’s moldy and not fresh, so it’s not necessarily an option,” she said.

“This means we see astronomically higher disease rates and health issues in these communities, and it’s only getting worse.”

De Mori added some communities only have one store selling essentials for the whole town.

“Because they’ve got the monopoly, they can charge whatever they like and it just seems to be a terrible downwards spiral,” she said.

University of Queensland public health policy professor Amanda Lee told 7NEWS.com.au while experts recommended numerous solutions over the years, little has been done overall.

Lee recommends subsidizing freight costs and preventing supermarkets from marking up fruit and vegetables.

“Unfortunately, while there’s a long list of recommendations from all the inquiries over the past 40 years … there’s been very little collective action to address it.”

Woolworths supermarket checkout worker surprises Melbourne mum with newborn with kind act

A Woolworths shopper has been left scratching her head after having an unexpected experience with an employee at her local store.

Sharing on Reddit, the Melbourne mum revealed that the incident happened while she was attempting to pay for groceries at the self-serve checkout.

After her payment failed to process, the customer was referred to the Woolworths Service Desk so she could finalize the transaction.

With her newborn baby “kicking off”, the Woolies worker told the mum to go home with her groceries – saying that she would pay for the items herself.

In her post, the shopper said she was left “grateful” but also “mortified” over the experience.

“I just got back from Woolworths where I tried to pay with my phone on self checkout,” she said.

“It wasn’t working so they printed me a barcode and took me to the service desk to pay, but my phone payment still didn’t work.

“After trying a few times and my newborn kicking off, the staff member said, don’t worry it’s on me.

“I was really taken back and asked if I could transfer her the money. She said no and then said, seriously it’s on me.

“My baby was screaming the place down by this point. I was so grateful and also mortified.”

The Reddit user then went on to ask for advice about the incident, worried that the worker could get in trouble for her kind act.

“What I want to know is can Woolworths staff do this? Or is it a dodgy?” she said.

“I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but don’t want to get her in trouble if she’s done something she’s not supposed to have done.”

Many said that it wasn’t uncommon for supermarket workers to carry out kind of acts like this.

“She will have paid for it, she would want you to accept it as the gift it was meant to be,” said one.

Added another: “My partner works at a supermarket and has paid for people before. It feels good. Pay it forward.”

Write a third: “I’ve done it a couple of times. I don’t see how it’s dodgy? The customer was struggling and I just tapped my own card to pay.

“I’m 99% sure they will pay it for you. Not all of us retail employees are lazy c-word even though we are treated like lowlies on daily basis.”

One more said: “Accept the kindness, and remember it next time you see someone else in need.”

Blind Date: Marketing executive Connor III wooed administrator Lily with his wit and charisma

LILY, 32, SAYS:

I arrived first, my date was running a couple of minutes late so as I was chatting to the staff and being walked to our table, I noticed a dude with a backpack sitting in the corner and thought, oh god, please not him. Thankfully it wasn’t and my date arrived soon after.

Lily's verdict: 9.5/10
Camera IconLily’s verdict: 9.5/10 Credit: John Koh/The West Australian

My first impressions of Connor III were that you picked a good one. He was tall and very easy to talk to. It didn’t feel forced at all.

We started off with some stock standard questions about work, how many siblings do you have etc., then once we both had a drink and relaxed a little, conversation just flowed. There were no awkward silences or any awkward moments actually. You can tell talking to people comes very easily to him. I mentioned he had recently been to a really crazy wedding. He told loads of good stories and made me laugh a lot.

I’d describe Connor III as funny, charismatic and likeable.

For dinner, we shared some plates. I’ve been to Lotus before so I knew even if my date wasn’t great, the food/cocktails would be. To be honest, I had set my expectations low for this date but funnily enough, we ended up staying until about 10pm. We shared a bottle of red and just took our time. I didn’t feel rushed or anything like that – it was just easy conversation. It was really bad weather, so we just decided to stay put instead of checking anywhere else out.

SUV barrels through Native American parade; 15 injured

A New Mexico man who was driving drunk without a valid license barreled through a parade that celebrates Native American culture in the western part of the state, injuring at least 15 people, officials said Friday.

Jeff Irving, 33, was arrested late Thursday and faces charges that include aggravated driving while intoxicated, fleeing from officers and injuring parade-goers and two Gallup police officers who tried to stop the vehicle, court documents said.

In a statement, New Mexico State Police said that investigators have no reason to suspect the crime was motivated by hate. No one was killed. The people who were hurt, including the police officers, suffered mostly minor injuries, said New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and his family were among those almost hit as the Chevrolet Tahoe drove through the parade route. The vehicle sped through downtown Gallup about 15 minutes after the nighttime parade started that served as the kick-off event for the 10-day Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Centennial Celebration.

Irving’s blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit for driving, according to court records. His license had been revoked or suspended for another drunken driving charge and the SUV had no registration or insurance, police said.

Court records did not list an attorney for Irving who could speak on his behalf. His two passengers were detained and taken to a detox center in Gallup, a city of about 22,000 people, state police said in the statement.

Many among the crowd of thousands lining the parade route in front of businesses that sell Native American jewelry, arts and crafts captured the chaotic scene on video.

As the SUV sped near the parade, videos on social media showed people yelling for others to get out of the way and some pushing parade-goers to safety. One video showed parade-goers yelling obscenities at the SUV’s driver and passengers while they were handcuffed on the ground.

Children performing traditional dances appear to have been among the first to have seen the SUV heading toward them, the videos showed. They ran to the side amid screams and others scrambling to get out of the way.

The images also showed blankets, shoes, banners and umbrellas left strewn along the street and on the sidewalks as people fled.

Lujan Grisham said Friday that the state will send additional police officers and a behavioral heath crisis team to Gallup for the rest of the ceremonial event.

Nez said the vehicle was coming at him and a group of tribal officials marching in the parade. He thanked people for taking quick action to get spectators and participants out of harm’s way.

“We just ask for your prayers for all of the participants,” Nez said in a video posted on social media. “We’re all shook up. You would see this on television, you would think it would never happen here. I’m sorry to say it happened here in Gallup, New Mexico.”

Tonya Jim said she went to the parade with her parents, grandchildren and children. Her 5-year-old granddaughter of hers, KaRiah, was picked from the crowd to join a group of dancers. Shortly after, the vehicle barreled down the parade route, turned and hit a man across from them who was sitting on a folding chair, she said. KaRiah was helped off the road by someone and was not hurt.

“I’m glad whoever was holding her hand just kept holding her hand and ran with her to get her off the road,” Jim said. “I’m not sure who she was from her, but I’m thankful for her.”

Jim said the family burned cedar and prayed when they got home and did a tobacco smoke prayer Friday morning to calm down.

“I blessed my kids and thank the creator they are still with me and (to) pray for the families who are hurt,” said Jim, who is Navajo and lives in Fort Defiance.

During the mayhem, the SUV swerved onto a side street and pulled into a parking spot before trying to pull out again. It hit a parked car and backed into a police car, state police said. Officers converged on the vehicle and detained the driver and two passengers who Irving identified as his brothers, according to court documents.

Irving initially told police he was not drinking before admitting to having at least a couple of beers, according to court documents. He is from the small community of Pinedale and faces 21 charges, the documents and police said.

City, state and tribal officials met Friday, with some urging more resources to address alcohol abuse. The state has long had a driving while impaired rate above the US national average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I think there’s always room for improvement,” said Gallup police Capt. Erin Toadlena-Pablo. “I don’t think anyone should ever look at it and say we’re doing all we can. There’s always other means.”

The nighttime parade is a highlight of the ceremonial celebration, which was founded in 1922 as a way for traders to showcase the culture and art of Native American tribes in the region, said Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Association board President Kyle Tom.

A daytime parade will go on as planned on Aug. 13, the day before closing events, Tom said. Other events include dances, rodeos and a juried art show.

People travel to Gallup from the vast Navajo Nation that extends into Arizona, New Mexico and Utah and from other tribal reservations to attend the parades and events. Nez, tribal lawmakers and others expressed anger and disbelief over what happened.

“It’s supposed to be a celebration, but today it was a difficult time for us,” Nez said.

Aussie home owner’s five-second hack will halve the drying time of your clothes in winter

An Aussie home owner has shared a very simple hack that promises to significantly reduce the drying time of your laundry this winter.

Sharing on a popular Facebook group, the woman revealed how one easy act – which takes just five seconds to do – can leave your damp clothes dry and ready to be folded in no time.

She said the hack was perfect for anyone who dries their laundry inside the home in front of a heater or fan.

For more Lifestyle related news and videos check out Lifestyle >>

The Facebook user starts by hanging the wet clothes on a drying rack as usual and placing it a safe distance from the heat source.

She then suggests hanging a larger piece of clothing on the far end of the airer – the side that’s opposite the heater of fan.

The action effectively blocks the hot air in and keeps it circulating around the laundry, drying the clothes quicker.

In her post, the home owner said it was a great way to dry your laundry without wasting electricity a clothes dryer.

“To help if you dry clothes near heater, turn sideways and block other end with larger piece, adjusting as needed,” she told the Cleaning & Organizing Inspiration Australia Facebook page.

“The heat doesn’t blow through as quickly, so the clothes dry faster and you stay warm without guilt!”

Many Facebook users were blown away by the easy hack.

“This is mega inspiring!” said one.

Added another: “Simple but effective. Have just bought a clothes horse to save on the dryer.”

‘Instant dryer’

Write a third: “Drying clothes, staying warm, and saving money and resources. Just like our grannies did!”

Others had a few twists on the simple tip to speed up drying time even more.

“Wrap a sheet around three sides and the top. Instant dryer,” said one.

Another added: “Yes I second this! I find putting something on top works well too.”

Added one more: “I used to put a sheet over the lot to keep the heat in and dry them quicker, especially if you can put them over a heating duct.”

Safety warning: Clothes should always be placed more than a meter from any heater or fan.

HEY BESTIE: My boyfriend doesn’t know my name – is that a deal breaker?

HEY BESTIE: My partner of seven years did not know my name, should I be concerned? When filling out an online form I have inserted an extra middle name that I do not have. How can he be so oblivious after so many years, am I overreacting?

There are some things that can be considered deal breakers in relationships and some things that aren’t. What I am hearing you ask is whether this is a dealbreaker for you and whether this should be a concern for the relationship.

There are often things within a relationship that are more important to one partner than they are to the other. For example, you might be the type of person who genuinely loves to know things about others, including about your partner.

Middle name, place of birth, time of birth, parents and grandparent details and even potentially the name of the street your partner grew up on.

Your partner on the other hand, might place less importance on some of the things listed above, and might place more importance on other aspects of the relationship such as providing regular compliments to you, cuddling on the couch while watching TV, being engaging around family and friends, and making amazing meals for you to share.

When he doesn’t remember your middle name for a form, does this mean that he loves you any less? Probably not.

It could simply be a matter of lesser importance for him. Some people are forgetful, and some people don’t pay attention to the minor details of things.

ALDI announces major backflip after eagle-eye shoppers spot huge Special Buys website change

ALDI supermarket has made a bombshell announcement regarding changes to its website.

The retail giant has abandoned a trial of its online shopping page, which allowed customers to purchase weekly Special Buys via the ALDI site.

ALDI says it was “not the right time” to expand the trial.

For more Lifestyle related news and videos check out Lifestyle >>

“We have recently concluded the trial of our online Special Buys program,” a spokesperson confirmed to 7Life.

“While we have gained valuable insights and appreciate that some customers enjoyed the ability to buy selected Special Buys online, it is not the right time to expand this trial.

“Supply chain pressures and inflation means that our top focus to deliver the best priced groceries to Australians. We believe that this focus, while it might come at the cost of other projects, delivers the best value to our customers,” the spokesperson added.

ALDI announces major backflip after eagle-eye shoppers spot huge change Credit: AAP

“We have been clear that delivering quality groceries at the best prices is our ongoing goal, especially when we are seeing Australians feel the pressure of inflation.

“Our unique business model is built on efficiency, and while we don’t want to see customers disappointed we believe this is the best decision to continue maintaining our price gap of over 15 per cent compared to our competitors.

“While we will not rule out bringing online Special Buys back, there are no immediate plans for online Special Buys or groceries. Customers can still enjoy our Special Buys offering in store on Wednesdays and Saturdays.”

ALDI had first announced the trial in May 2021, allowing customers in Greater Metro Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to purchase an exclusive range of Special Buys products online.

Social media reacts to ALDI website change

Confirmation of the trial’s halt came after shoppers took to social media after noticing that ALDI had “quietly” removed the section from its website.

“So did ALDI just quietly remove their online range instead of the promised expansion of eventually offering all their products online?” one shopper asked on the ALDI Fans Australia page.

“I can’t see any mention of online products anymore anywhere on their app or website ever since they had their online clearance last week.”

She added: “I can’t see any mention of online anywhere on the app. They’ve completely removed the link to it as far as I can tell.

“And they used to offer all the larger items like the table saw for delivery, but not any longer. I really feel like they’re removing the option altogether.”

ALDI is offering a Special Buys Online Clearance via the website while stocks last.

Gay son tells of shock as he discovers his ‘homophobic’ dad on Grindr

Young Australian man Jacob says his father disowned him when he came out as gay – so imagine his shock when he came across his married, “homophobic” father on the hookup app Grindr.

Jacob revealed the bizarre tale on Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O’s radio show, explaining that he’d been scrolling through profiles when he came across a photo of a man’s torso – with no head shown in the picture – and thought he noticed something a little familiar .

“They have one of those ensuites that are through the walk-in closet,” he told the surprised radio duo.

“I thought, that looks sort of like my parents’ house.

“I clicked through the profile to see if it could be my dad.”

Jacob explained that his mum and dad had been happily married for 27 years and he had never seen any sign of a “rift” in their relationship.

Thinking what he’d discovered may be a fake profile, he decided to engage with the user to see if it really was his dad.

“I wasn’t flirting with him, I just engaged in normal conversation, told him I liked his picture and asked where he is from,” Jacob explained.

“Then I asked for a picture of his face – when he felt it through it was my dad.”

Jacob said he was now faced with a difficult dilemma.

Should he tell his mum? Should he confront his dad about him?

“I am very open and forward-thinking, I don’t care if he is gay, I just don’t want him lying to mum,” he said.

Despite his father disowning him when he told his parents about his sexual orientation, they eventually reconciled.

Now, he said he wanted to talk to his father and “get his story.”

“I want to know why he has been hiding it from me for so long,” he said.

“He was super against it when I was coming out.

“He hated me.

“He was super angry and didn’t want anything to do with me in his life.”

Jacob asked those listening in to the radio segment for advice.

What should I do?

The overwhelming response was that Jacob should sit down with his parents and discuss what he had found out – as difficult as that might be.

“You have to discuss this with both your parents, they have to be aware,” one caller advised.

Another listener said the same thing had happened to his partner.

“My partner had a similar thing happen, his dad had six kids, was a construction manager and appeared happily married,” the caller said.

“Your dad will be happier if he can be true to his real identity, and your mum deserves the chance to be happy too.”

A third caller suggested Jacob speak to his father first, then his mum, rather than addressing the issue with them both at the same time.

One man revealed that he had found gay magazines in his dad’s car and followed him after work one day.

“I found out what he was doing in the evening,” the man explained.

“I spoke to my siblings about it and we realized he had been doing it our whole lives.”

The caller added that his parents were still together after the family had a “sit-down chat” about his father’s sexual orientation.

At the end of the radio segment Jacob told Kyle and Jackie O that he was still feeling undecided about what to do and would have to give it more thought.
