AFL 2022: Melbourne defeat Carlton, Kysaiah Pickett goal, video, finals race, ladder

Melbourne have broken the hearts of Carlton fans by snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in the final 15 seconds.

The Blues had their hands on a finals berth for the first time since 2013, holding onto a one point lead in the dying seconds when Melbourne surged forward.

A long bomb inside 50 from Jayden Hunt went to ground and Kysaiah Pickett got on the end of a Jake Melksham loose ball get and sent a mongrel punt floating goalward.

As it sailed through you could pinpoint the moment Carlton’s fans hearts break.

The win launches Melbourne back to second spot on the ladder and leaves Carlton in a perilous position entering the final round of the home and away season.

“I’m speechless really I don’t know what to say, it’s good to be back on the winning list. We went down last week and to bounce back this week is unreal,” Pickett said after the win.

Dees skipper Max Gawn didn’t even kick his post-game interview off properly before asking just how long was left on the clock.

“That’s pretty clutch. Kozzie is a good player and he’s been playing some good footy this year and that was his moment, ”Gawn said.

“We were on the wrong end of the moments last weekend and we studied it a lot. The last 10 minutes of the Collingwood game we watched it a lot and you saw some good stuff in those last minutes, we were able to hold our nerve.”

Jake Melksham was a standout in front of goal for Melbourne, ending the night with four goals and kicking the second last goal of the contest to bring the Demons back to within a point.

The Blues held the ball with around 60 seconds left to play and looked assured of victory, but one simple miss kick opened the door and the Demons pounced.

Carlton need to secure a win against Collingwood in round 23 or pray Hawthorn can topple the Western Bulldogs next Sunday.

A loss next weekend and a Bulldogs win and the Blues will once again miss out on September action.

“It leaves already gutted, it leaves already disappointed. But I’m also really proud at the same time and I thought our players were really brave right through our whole night,” Blues coach Michael Voss said.

“It hurts. Important game for us but we didn’t quite get it right at the end but as far as the whole game goes I just thought the boys played really brave and played a great style of footy and it’s something we want to keep replicating.”

Fans watching on Saturday night simply couldn’t believe the ending they had just witnessed.

7 News reporter Emma O’Sullivan wrote: “I don’t even barrack for the Demons or the Blues but my heart is still in my mouth, that was wild.”

The Advocate editor Alex Fair wrote: “That was epic. Simply epic. What a reply.”

Broadcaster Darren Parkin wrote: “Nothing can kick you in the pills quite like footy can it? That’s brutal for the Blues.”

Former Brisbane and Port Adelaide player Tom Rockliff believes the final moments played into Melbourne’s hands.

“I think it was a clear tactic from Melbourne to load the corridor. Lever kicks to a 3 vs 1 in middle of ground. Doesn’t happen by chance, something they have trained – Carlton set up well down the line,” he wrote.

Geelong have extended their winning streak to 12-straight on Saturday as they topped the Gold Coast Suns on the road.

The win puts the Cats eight points clear on top of the ladder and secures the minor premiership for the dominant outfit.

The Cats put the foot down from the opening bounce with forward Tyson Stengle in scorching form, slotting three goals to get the game going.

“It’s one of the great quarters we’ve seen from a small forward this year,” legendary Hawk Jason Dunstall told Fox Footy.

Anthony Hudson added: “He is putting on quite a show.”

It remained one-way traffic in the second quarter as the Cats went into the halftime break holding a 51-point advantage.

“The Suns are getting a masterclass,” Dunstall said.

In what could be their last match outside of Victoria for the year, Geelong cruised to a 17-4 record on the back of an inside 50 entry landslide of 72-43.

It’s the 15th time the Cats have secured the minor premiership, however the feat hasn’t meant much in recent history.

Melbourne last season was the only club to go from minor premiers to premiers, breaking a drought of seven straight minor premiers to fall short.

Collingwood can pull off the biggest heist in AFL history and pinch the minor premiership, to do so they’d need to win their final two games by around 50 combined goals while Geelong would have to lose next weekend by around 25 goals.

Jeremy Cameron finished alongside Stengle with three goals as the Cats flexed their muscles on the road.

They finish the home and away season on Saturday at home against the West Coast Eagles.

As if there wasn’t enough attention on him with speculation swirling around him about

leaving the Suns for Adelaide, Gold Coast livewire Izak Rankine decided to dye his hair a

shade of peroxide blonde.

Rankine is set to accept an offer of $900.00 a year to be the highest paid Crow and Adelaide supporters would have enjoyed his first quarter goal that included a spin in traffic and cheeky right-foot checkside for a goal. He also won a free kick with a crunching tackle and went within a fingernail of a second goal as his performance lived up to his haircut. He left the field in the fourth term favoring his left shoulder in what could be his last appearance of him as a Sun.

AFL 2022: Max King torched, Brisbane Lions defeat St Kilda, finals, ladder

St Kilda had it all to play for on Friday night against the Brisbane Lions, but they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot.

A thrilling third quarter saw them come back to life and put the Lions to the sword. But when it mattered most, they fell apart.

The Saints had ample opportunities in the final quarter to run away with the contest, but continually threw it away in front of goal.

Young star forward Max King was the prime culprit, finishing the night with five behinds to his name as his set shot routine abandoned him.

The yips seemed to have taken a hold as his routine changed on multiple occasions.

At the other end of the ground the Lions capitalized on their opportunities. The Lions’ last five scoring shots netted them four goals and one behind. The Saints’ last seven scoring shots were all behinds.

St Kilda fans in the stands were routinely spotted by the cameras with their head in their hands after each miss in front of goal.

“The set shots were relatively easy, they weren’t on tight angles. You just have to go back and suck up the pressure and put them through the big sticks,” Jonathan Brown said on Fox Footy.

Former St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt said King had zero confidence in his kicking by the end.

“He’s had four shots from directly in front and in the end he just looked completely devoid of confidence, his routine was broken,” he said.

“To the point that we watched him pretty closely the last five to 10 minutes and I don’t think he wanted the ball.”

Garry Lyon added: “That’s a horrible night. I agree that in the end he was saying I don’t want to go near it.”

Footy fans watching on were quick to lambaste King for his horror night out, when St Kilda were desperate for the win.

CODE Sports’ Daniel Cherny wrote: “There is no more excruciating sight in football than watching Max King kicking for goal.”

St Kilda will now need a minor miracle to qualify for the finals after losing to the Cam Rayner-inspired Brisbane Lions by 15 points.

Brisbane opened up a 26-point buffer late in the second quarter, but for the third game in a row, they either gave up a sizeable lead, or had one eaten into significantly, as the Saints exploded in the third quarter to lead by five points, putting the Lions’ top-four ambitions in peril.

The Saints will likely drop to 10th this weekend, meaning they will have to not only beat the Swans in Sydney in the final round next week, but will also need a raft of other results to go their way to make the finals.

The win launches Brisbane into a second spot on the ladder currently and keeps their hopes alive of securing a final home.

Patrick Cripps’ home and away season is over after the Blues star failed to have his two-game ban overturned at the AFL Tribunal.

Cripps’ legal team argued his bump on Brisbane Lions player Callum Ah Chee was nothing more than a “football act”, but the AFL wasn’t having it.

The Blues used Willie Rioli’s hit on Matt Rowell from earlier in the season as the example as to why the star shouldn’t be sanctioned.

Rioli left the ground and bumped into Rowell.

“My eyes are purely fixed on the ball,” Cripps said.

“I’m trying to turn and protect the drop zone of the ball, I’ve got my arms outstretched. The ball is there to be won.

“No way I can answer that ball without a collision being there

“In the heat of battle when the ball’s there to be won, I’m going to try and take possession of the ball.”

AFL counsel Nicholas Pane however argued that Cripps elected to bump and because of that decision, he was responsible for the outcome.

Cripps’ lawyer pleaded with the jury to let the star Blue off as it was simply just two players contesting the footy.

“This was a very even contest with milliseconds in it,” Cripps’ lawyer Peter O’Farrell said.

“The consequences of impact do not determine the reasonableness of an action.

“Concussion is a serious issue in sport, but it’s not to be explained away by blaming players all the time.

“On occasion there will be injury. Players can and do get hurt.”

Josh Kennedy doesn’t look like he should be giving the game away.

The towering West Coast Eagles forward announced his retirement during the week and his final game played out like something we’re used to seeing on the big screen.

The Crows spoiled the party as they recorded the 16.6 (102) to 13.8 (86) win, but it was still Kennedy’s day as he slotted a stunning eight goals in his final AFL outing.

Kennedy got it started in the first quarter when he slotted the Eagles’ first three goals before slotting another in the second to head into the break with four to his name.

Fans watching on were calling for the Eagles to keep targeting him and he responded with two more in the third quarter.

The Eagles entered the final quarter down by 17 points and a valiant effort saw them soar back into the contest with Kennedy slotting his seventh and eighth goals.

Kennedy had a chance to kick his ninth and level the scores, but he pulled the shot left and watched it sail through for a behind.

“Missed the easiest one of the day, but look it was a great fight. Adelaide brought the contest but it was a good game to be a part of for me last game,” Kennedy said on Fox Footy after the final siren.

“I’m a bit emotional but it has been good.

“I’ll have a few beers tonight and then I’ll probably reflect on it over the next couple of weeks. It’s been an amazing journey. I’d like to thank the club, the fans… it’s been a crazy journey.

“The boys were looking for me a fair bit, they were feeding me all day so I was lucky enough to get around a few so it was good to finish off like that.”

The Optus Stadium crowd rose as one as Kennedy made his way off the ground as both the Eagles and Crows players got together and formed a guard of honor.

Kennedy’s career began back in 2005 when he was taken with the fourth pick in the National Draft by Carlton. I have played 293 games throughout his career and tallied 723 goals.

After two seasons with the Blues, Kennedy was involved in a blockbuster trade that sent him to the Eagles and brought Chris Judd to Carlton.

His final outing had the footy world in utter disbelief as his eight goal outing was the most in a single game throughout the 2022 season.

Being blown off the park as they found themselves down 38-2, the Blues needed a spark and skipper Patrick Cripps tried to deliver it.

“He’s much more likely to be suspended than not. The AFL’s bottom line is if you choose to bump, you’re responsible for the fallout,” Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy during the halftime show.

“This is a textbook case. He jumps off the ground, it’s not a marking contest, he doesn’t really contest the ball, he braces rather than reaches for the ball.

“Ah Chee is subbed out so it is absolutely medium impact, potentially even high impact.”

Collingwood’s Brayden Maynard was rubbed out earlier in the year for a strikingly similar hit on GWS’ Daniel Lloyd that resulted in him missing two weeks.

“It’s a tough one to watch,” former Carlton star Eddie Betts said on Fox Footy.

Carlton’s place in the finals is on the line, currently sitting seventh on the ladder one game clear of the ninth placed St Kilda.

They finish the season with games against the reigning premiers Melbourne and the running-hot Collingwood.

Failing to win any and they could find themselves standing on the outside looking in and having to secure a win without their inspirational skipper could prove to be mission impossible.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Ollie Hoare wins 1500m gold in record time, video

Ollie Hoare has come from the clouds in the final stages to claim Commonwealth Games gold in the 1500m.

Hoare blitzed the field in the home straight as he stormed past Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot in the last 10 meters to cross the line in a games record time of 3:30.13 – edging the Kenyan by .09 of a second.

The Aussie stalked Cheruiyot, the world champion and defending Commonwealth Games champion, as they came around the final bend and turned on the gas at the perfect moment.

“Hoare lifting here, lifting with a big run,” Bruce McAvaney said.

“He’s coming with a mighty run, the Aussie’s a chance. Cheruiyot goes up … here comes Ollie Hoare with a flashing run I reckon he’s going to get there.”

“And it is!” Tamsyn Lewis-Manou shouted as Hoare crossed the line.

“It’s an extraordinary moment in Australian sport. It’s one of those that we will etch in the history books forever and how lucky we are to have been here and for you to have watched it,” McAvaney said as Hoare slumped over in disbelief on the ground. “The last 100m is the stuff of legends.”

“Take your hat off, that was just brilliant and a new Games record,” Lewis-Manou said.

“He has just beat a sensational field. I have waited until the exit route, got out and that finish was brilliant.”

“He takes down two world champions in the home stretch, it’s just magical. It’s what you dream about,” McAvaney added.

Hoare, 25, spoke about the gold medal moment after completing a lap of victory around the stadium.

“That last lap I just wanted to stay relaxed and I knew that my time would come. It’s hard to believe when you have guys there that are absolute class. But I was able to get out and I just had the kicker at the end and it was spectacular,” Hoare said.

Hoare got emotional during the interview as he dedicated the run to his late grandfather.

“I’d like to dedicate that race to my pop he was a life member at Southern Districts athletics club and he was a World War 2 veteran, Sargaent Fred Hoare.

“He passed away just after the World Champs and it was a very difficult time for me because of how bad I’d just raced and to hear that news of a guy who would have a stopwatch at every race when I was growing up going through the sport, to not have him there to watch was tough but I’d like to dedicate that race to my pop because he is the reason why my family loves this sport and the reason why I am here today.

“So Pop, I know you’re watching. I’ll have a glass of red for ya mate. That was a good one.”

Australian viewers couldn’t believe what they’d just witnessed with Hoare’s run one we’ll remember for years and years.

The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph wrote: “Here comes Ollie Hoare with a flashing run. Bloody hell. Some kind of guts to run down two world champions. Just wow.”

Former Boomers coach Brendan Joyce wrote: “Wow Australia we have a new champion to be proud of! What a run in the 1500! Ollie Hoare you were incredible!”

F1 2022: Lando Norris steering clear of Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren situation, Oscar Piastri, Alpine

Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren teammate is steering well clear of the ongoing chaos.

Lando Norris took to social media in the wake of the Formula 1’s silly season going into overdrive to let the world know, he isn’t available.

On Friday it was reported Ricciardo’s seat at McLaren for the 2023 season would be taken by rising Australian prodigy Oscar Piastri.

The bombshell news means Ricciardo’s contract could be terminated one year early, which would potentially result in a monster payout for the West Australian.

F1 is on its mid-year break and the silly season went into overdrive this week when Piastri emphatically denied he would be filling the spare Alpine seat vacated by Fernando Alonso, who is joining Aston Martin.

But as the chaos unfolds at McLaren, Norris made it abundantly clear he wouldn’t be addressing any of the drama during the break.

Norris uploaded two images of him in a private jet, with this sneaky caption: “Thanks for your email. I will be away from the office until [next week] for [holiday] with no access to email. If your request is urgent, please contact [@mclaren]. Otherwise, I’ll get back to you as quickly as possible when I return on [@fai_aviation_group].”

The Formula 1 world wasn’t happy with Ricciardo’s reported sacking from McLaren, with many hoping the Aussie remains in the sport.

Ricciardo’s career has been on some what of a downward spiral since his days of outdriving Sebastian Vettel and regularly challenging Max Verstappen at Red Bull. But no one wants to see it end this way.

ESPN’s Nate Saunders reported four teams have sounded Ricciardo out recently to “see where his head is at” and slammed McLaren for its treatment of the Aussie.

“It reflects very poorly on Brown and McLaren how they have treated Ricciardo over the past six months,” Saunders wrote. “Ricciardo, the only McLaren driver to have won an F1 race since 2012, has been the first to admit his performances have not been up to the standards he set at Red Bull and Renault but it feels as though he has been made as a scapegoat to deflect away from deeper problems at the team.”

Despite the rapid turn of events this week Ricciardo’s future could take a long time to settle because McLaren will likely face a challenge from Alpine over its poaching of Piastri.

The West Australian could spend a year with McLaren’s IndyCar team to see out his deal, or could receive a pay out and join another team. That team could even be Alpine if Piastri is able to leave.

Who is Oscar Piastri?

Born in Melbourne, Piastri joined Alpine’s academy after clinching the Formula Renault Eurocup title in 2019, securing seven wins.

He carried the form into the Formula 3 series in 2020, winning the opening race on his debut and holding his nerve to claim the title by three points in one of the most closely fought championships ever.

The following year he was on the Formula 2 grid, where he clocked six wins to unequivocally announce his arrival on the world stage, becoming just the third rookie champion after Charles Leclerc (2017) and George Russell (2018). They are both now in F1.

Despite his rapid rise Piastri was overlooked for a drive in Formula One this season because of a lack of available seats, instead lurking on the sidelines at Alpine ready to replace either Esteban Ocon or Alonso if they were forced to miss a race.

He’s managed by fellow Aussie and nine-time F1 race winner Mark Webber. “Does he deserve to be in F1? Absolutely, we all know that,” Webber says. “It’s not a question of if, but when.”

The Piastri family say they are “petrol heads” with his father Chris telling The Sydney Morning Herald that “Oscar’s bedtime stories were mainly car books”.

He started racing remote-controlled cars aged six and by nine had graduated to piloting go-karts.

AFL great Jason Dunstall has never shied away from sledging a fellow former star of the game and on Saturday he was at his best.

In the first quarter of the game between the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle at Marvel Stadium, Dunstall took aim at Luke Darcy.

Darcy was riding high in the days before the game after his son, Sam, was named to make his AFL debut for the Bulldogs.

Sam recorded his first touch of his career in the early minutes after an intercept mark.

Not long after he had his second disposal of the game and Dunstall saw an opportunity and took it with both hands.

“He’s already had one more possession than his father did on debut,” Dunstall savagely said on Fox Footy..

The remark drew some laughs from within the commentary box before Dunstall remarked: “Maybe too soon.”

Luke Darcy’s debut came in round 21, 1994 when the Bulldogs defeated St Kilda 117-72, Darcy ended the contest with two handballs to his name.

Sam eclipsed his disposal tally in the second quarter when he recorded his third kick of the contest.

The 19-year-old was taken as the second pick in the 2021 AFL Draft as a father-son selection with his debut announced on Thursday afternoon.

Standing at a towering 205cm tall, the teenager produced a stunning display last weekend in the VFL with 20 disposals and pulled down 14 marks.

He becomes the third generation from the Darcy family to pull on the Dogs guernsey, Luke had a stellar 226 game career with David Darcy playing 133 games.

Luke presented Sam with his jumper in a heartwarming video uploaded to social media by the Bulldogs on Friday.

Lobb has been linked with a move out of Fremantle at season’s end with his rumored landing spot said to be the Western Bulldogs.

Going up against the Dogs on Saturday afternoon, Lobb put forth the greatest job interview you’re likely to see as her ran riot under the roof at Marvel Stadium.

Lobb got the party started in the first quarter with a goal from outside 50, but it was two bombs in the second quarter that left AFL legend Jason Dunstall astonished.

Hugged up against the boundary and 50m from home, Lobb launched his second kick of the game straight through the big sticks.

Less than five minutes later he was back in the thick of it in the exact same spot.

As Lobb began his walk into goal, he set sail for his third goal and Dunstall knew straight away it was home. The commentary box couldn’t believe what they were watching.

Dunstall: “Oh don’t tell me.”

Dwayne Russell: “He’s struck it pretty well… awesome, amazing.”

Gary Lyon: “That is as good an exhibition of three kicks at goal since Plugger Lockett.”

Mooney: “Three of the best bombs you’ll see.”

Dunstall: “They’re the three best kicks from a three kick player to have three goals. Extraordinary.”

Lobb’s ludicrous display left not only legends of the game in awe, but had fans watching on in utter disbelief.

Lobb continued the onslaught in the second half when he flushed his fourth goal from his fourth kick of the contest.

He showed he was human midway through the third quarter however when he missed back-to-back set shots.
