Signs of liver failure: Selfless stranger saves Melbourne schoolgirl Evie Wagner life after she was given 48 hours to live

Watching her daughter’s chest rise and fall – with the help of machines – Natasha Wagner sat anxiously waiting for news of a liver that six-year-old Evie so desperately needed.

But when doctors came into the room announcing they had found a “match”, the mum was struck with fear.

“The one they found was from a man in his 40s who had died of an aggressive brain tumor,” Natasha tells 7Life.

“So Evie would have a one-in-1000 chance of getting the same tumor.”

However, without the organ transplant, specialists gave Evie just 24 to 48 hours to live.

Natasha was left with two, terrible choices.

Pray that another liver would be found for her little girl within a day – or go ahead with the transplant and hope a brain tumor never emerged.

The Melbourne mum chose the latter.

Growing up in the dark

Evie was born healthy, with “absolutely no indication she had anything remotely wrong”, the mum of seven explains.

And as she entered her first year of school, she was just a “normal” kid.

So when Natasha was invited to speak at a 10-day forum in India, she jumped at the chance, leaving her husband Erich to care for the kids.

But the moment she stepped foot off the plane after her 13-hour flight, her phone lit up.

“My eldest daughter said Evie looked a little yellow,” Natasha says.

“I told her to take Evie to hospital.”

While Natasha worked to get a flight home, Evie was admitted to hospital and doctors began running tests.

They discovered the little girl had an enlarged liver and began treating her with medication while trying to uncover the cause.

Finally, after a circuitous five-day trek home, Natasha went straight to the hospital and ran to her daughter’s side.

Evie was fitted with a nasogastric tube, which pumped nutrients and medication directly into her stomach.

With her oxygen levels too low, she was ventilated and transferred into the ICU.

“No one wants to see their loved ones with tubes and wires coming out of everywhere,” Natasha says.

‘Oompa Loompa’

From a liver biopsy and genetic testing, doctors worked around the clock to find a reason for Evie’s continuing deterioration.

With a collapsed lung, her skin turned bright yellow overnight.

“Her tummy just grew and grew, the bottoms of her feet and her eyes they were so yellow – she looked like an Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the mum describes.

“She looked like she was pregnant.”

Desperate to try to soothe her daughter’s suffering, Natasha turned to alternate methods.

“Honestly .. I don’t know how I functioned on a daily basis,” she says.

“I hired a healer who put crystals on her stomach.”

It’s been two years since Evie’s transplant and she is a happy and healthy school girl. Credit:

Unable to eat or move, Evie’s arms were stretched above her head to allow her lungs to inflate.

As Natasha watched on helplessly, doctors revealed that her little girl now needed a liver transplant.

Just as the mum started to process the news, the transplant team revealed they had found a donor.

The man was in his 40s and had died from an aggressive brain tumor.

death’s doorstep

Sitting the mum down, the transplant team explained that, if she were to accept the liver, Evie would have a one-in-1000 chance of contracting the same disease that took the donor’s life.

“I didn’t know what to do. I called my husband and he didn’t know either,” Natasha says.

“I just had all of these questions, could we even reject it, could she wait for another one?”

The parents turned to their children, a doctor, for advice.

“She said, ‘Take it, she (Evie) needs it’,” Natasha says.

After her parents agreed to the transplant, Evie was quickly taken into surgery – and for 12 agonizing hours, Natasha waited for news.

“I was just sitting there watching people walk past, thinking how lucky we are,” she says.

“How lucky we are that, if the surgery is a success, Evie will go on to live a normal full life.”

positive mindset

Natasha’s positivity was met with great news, as the transplant was declared successful.

Evie received a split liver, meaning half the donor’s liver went to her and the other half to another individual in need.

The six-year-old spent three days in an induced coma to allow her body to recover.

Meanwhile, doctors revealed they finally found the cause of her liver failure – Wilson’s disease.

The rare genetic disorder is a result of a build up of excess copper.

The mum of seven will be forever grateful to the stranger who saved her Evie’s life. Credit:

Evie was slowly woken up and just two days later she bravely took her first post-op steps.

“The surgeon came in after we had been on the ward for about eight days,” Natasha says.

“He basically said Evie had been on death’s door and how lucky she was because she had 24-48 hours left to live.”

Evie continued to excel and was discharged from hospital shortly after.

Two years on

It’s now two years since the transplant and the young girl is happy and healthy.

She takes just one daily dose of anti-rejection medication and still has checkups with her GP.

And thankfully, there are no signs of any brain tumor.

Her mum will always be grateful for the stranger who gave her daughter life.

“It is just the most selfless gift,” Natasha says.

“I will never be able to say thank you to Evie’s donor but every day I think about him.

“If there wasn’t a donor at that exact time I wouldn’t have my little girl right now.”

organ donation

Looking back at Evie’s time fighting for life in hospital, Natasha thinks of the friendships she made with other parents of children who received organ transplants.

But she confesses, her mind is with those kids who died waiting.

“Two weeks after Evie left hospital, a little boy died,” she solemnly reveals.

“Every day people die waiting for an organ – there is a lot of fear around organ donation and there really doesn’t need to be.”

Information on organ donation can be found via the Australian Government Organ and Tissue Authority.

The authority says it takes just one minute to register as an organ donor – and that up to seven lives can be saved from a single person.

Furious Jetstar passenger kicked off flight over wild suitcase ‘mistake’

A traveler has detailed the shocking moment she was “kicked off” a Jetstar flight after being mistakenly told she had a “dangerous” item in her checked suitcase.

Clare Vertannes was in her seat ready for takeoff from Sydney to Perth shortly after 12pm on April 10 when a flight attendant told her she could no longer fly with the budget airline.

WATCH VIDEO ABOVE: Clare shares her Jetstar debacle story

The 26-year-old event coordinator claims she started to “panic” when she was ordered off the flight without any explanation.

“I kept asking the flight attendant what was going on and I essentially started to freak out. Many thoughts started to rush through my head at this point,” Clare tells 7Life.

“I felt beyond confused and in disbelief because I had no idea what was going on.”

Eventually, she was told there was a “dangerous” battery pack in her checked luggage – but Clare insisted hers was in her carry-on handbag.

“I knew my battery pack was not in my suitcase because it was in my handbag, which I proceeded to take out and show her,” Clare claims.

“After I showed her my battery pack and tried to tell her that there had been a mistake, she proceeded not to acknowledge what I was saying and kept repeating that I needed to collect my suitcase from baggage claim.”

Realizing she would miss her existing flight, Clare – who was visiting Sydney on a work trip – asked whether she was going to be put on the next plane to Perth.

‘angry and annoyed’

“The flight attendant said to me… that Jetstar will not be paying for another seat for me,” she claims.

“She said it was my fault that I had held up all these people on the plane and that I, in fact, had to compensate them because I had held up the scheduled flight.

“Again, I was in disbelief and this is when I started to feel angry and annoyed because she was blaming me and not giving me the benefit of the doubt.”

Clare says she was left in tears by the time she arrived at baggage claim.

As she made her way to the counter, she was allegedly told her checked suitcase did not contain any “dangerous” item.

“The staff member said, ‘I’m so sorry, there’s been a miscommunication… there is nothing wrong with your bags – I left the desk to go to the bathroom and came back to this mess, I’m so, so sorry’,” Clare recalls.

“Honestly, I was hoping there was something in my suitcase so this drama wasn’t for nothing.”

‘Absolute s*** show’

Furious, Clare says she started to “raise her voice” because she was “upset and emotional” over the debacle.

“I got very angry and started to vent to her about how ridiculous this is and how it was an absolute s*** show,” she says.

“But then I started apologizing to the staff member because I knew it wasn’t her fault.

“After all that, I took a moment to breathe and said, ‘Ok, well, it is what it is, what’s the plan now? Can I get on the next flight?’ She said, ‘There’s no more flights to Perth until tomorrow’.

“I then told her that I needed to be on a flight back to Perth today and that I’d sit and wait for a flight – and that’s what I did.”

Clare was offered a free Qantas flight on the same day – but had to wait seven hours. Credit: Clare Vertannes

After waiting for an hour, Clare was offered a free Qantas flight to Perth on the same day – but she needed to wait seven hours.

“Qantas had a spare seat and they had secured it for me. No upgrades or compensation – just the seat,” she says.

During the wait, she tried to leave her suitcase at the airport so she could return to the city – but was told she needed to pay an extra $50 for storage.

“When they were asking me to pay to put my luggage somewhere after the whole order, I was over it,” she says.

“I decided to lug my suitcase back to the city. I ended up catching a cab because the trains weren’t working.”

‘I was shook’

In a shock turn of events, Clare received an email from Jetstar saying she was charged $10 for a pie under her seat number – despite her having been kicked off the flight.

“I remember sitting in my (Qantas) seat, thinking what else could possibly happen? And then I get an email from Jetstar. It goes: ‘Thank you so much for your pie purchase on your recent Jetstar flight’,” she says.

“I was shook… Someone on my flight had charged a foot to my seat and I got that invoice.

“Honestly, I was just in disbelief. I was thinking, ‘Is this real? Are they having me for a laugh?’ I was done at this point.”

Jetstar offered a refund and voucher, left, but charged $10 for a pie to her seat – despite having been kicked off the flight. Credit: Clare Vertannes

After the mishap, Jetstar offered her a $116.22 cash refund and a $350.78 voucher.

However, Clare is demanding a full cash refund of $467 and a $50 reimbursement for the taxi fare into the city.

“They didn’t give me the compensation I asked for, but they sent me a voucher to ‘compensate’ for the flight I was kicked off,” she says.

“I don’t know why they bothered giving me a voucher – it’s not like I will be flying with them again.”

Jetstar responds

In a letter to Clare, a Jetstar employee explained why the airline was unable to offer her a “monetary refund”.

“I hope you’d appreciate that we can only return something to you in its original form,” the letter read.

“Since you have paid for this booking using a voucher and a credit card payment, we can only process a voucher equivalent to the amount paid via voucher and a cash refund equivalent to the amount paid via credit card.

“We are unable to process a cash refund for a booking which wasn’t paid in cash in the first place.”

Clare demanded a full cash refund – but Jetstar has since declined. Credit: Clare Vertannes

The letter added: “We have assessed your claim in line with all relevant laws and conventions and I appreciate how unhappy you are with this outcome.

“However, we’re comfortable that we’ve met our obligations under applicable law by providing this outcome to you.

“We will respect your opinion and decision on this matter however our position remains the same.”

A Jetstar spokesman told 7NEWS.com.au: “We sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding and are looking into what took place.”

Four months on from the flight drama, Clare is speaking out about the ordeal on TikTok.

“Now that I’ve overcome my PTSD, I can finally share to you all the trauma that Jetstar gave me,” she said in a now-viral video with more than 700,000 views.

She adds: “I’m glad I shared my experience though because everyone is starting to share their horror stories too and hopefully something will change on how budget airlines treat their customers.”

Good Samaritans thanked by Melbourne mother after stepping in during roadside toddler seizure

The mother who pulled her unconscious son from a car and cradled him on a busy north-west Melbourne roadside has been reunited with the good Samaritan couple who rushed to help her.

Madeleine Crawford, and 20-month-old Stirling, met Thi and Cindy Le of North Sunshine at an emotional weekend reunion.

It was the first time they had come together since Ms Crawford put out a call to find them so she could finally say thank you.

Suffering a fever, chesty cough and struggling to breathe, Stirling was being driven by Ms Crawford to the Royal Children’s Hospital emergency department on August 3 when he started having a seizure in the back seat.

Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

PlayAudio. Duration: 8 minutes 48 seconds

Melbourne mum searches for ‘good Samaritans’ who came to her aid when her son had a seizure

A clean bill of health

Desperate for help, Ms Crawford pulled over on the corner of Churchill Avenue and Ballarat Road in Maidstone, grabbed Stirling from the back seat, and stepped onto the median strip.

Ms Le and her husband had been driving only a few vehicles behind and did not hesitate after spotting Ms Crawford gesturing wildly at passing traffic.

“I immediately knew something was wrong,” she said.

“I didn’t know what else to do so I told Madeleine I’d hold baby Stirling while she drives to the closest hospital.

“Thankfully my husband was a quick thinker and drove in front with hazard lights on to escort us to the hospital safely.”

They made it to Footscray Hospital where Ms Crawford ran inside and Stirling was immediately triaged by the nurses.

Reunited via radio

There was no time to exchange details.

Ms Le said when the pair arrived home, she could not stop thinking about what had happened.

“As a mother myself, I knew how distressing it would’ve been to have experienced that,” she said.

“But I would never have thought Madeleine would try to find us. I just did what I could at the time to help.”

Both families were reunited on Sunday after Ms Crawford put out the call to find them via ABC Radio Melbourne.

“It was incredible to be able to express our gratitude in person,” Ms Crawford said.

“It was a very special afternoon — lots of hugs and smiles.”

A clean bill of health

Stirling was diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus but has since been issued a clean bill of health.

Ms Crawford said it was his seizure that had caught her off guard and urged other parents to learn how to respond to a similar situation.

In a twist, the Le family revealed their own granddaughter, Aria, had been through a similar experience only months ago.

Their daughter, Anita, had phoned them for help after her sick toddler started having a seizure.

According to the Victorian government, about one in every 20 children between six months and six years old will experience a febrile seizure while suffering a high fever. While alarming, it is not epilepsy and it does not cause brain damage.

“It is absolutely terrifying if it happens to your child,” Ms Crawford said.

“I would recommend parents read the guidance so they can be as prepared as they can if or when it happens.”

After 14 years of marriage and a baby Anthony came out as gay. It led to a life-changing idea

Melbourne university student Grace has two gay dads and one mum.

Growing up in this “modern Australian family”, she spends one week with her dads, Anthony and Chris, and the next with her mum, Jane.

“Grace is the real benefit here,” Anthony tells 7Life.

For more Parenting related news and videos check out Parenting >>

“She gets each of us with 100 per cent of our batteries charged.”

While on paper it may seem like the parenting trio have nothing but differences, they are in fact the very best of friends.

“Every birthday, every Christmas, every crisis – we are all here for Grace,” Chris smiles.

It takes a village

After 14 years of marriage, Anthony and Jane divorced amicably.

With their beloved Grace to consider, the pair vowed to put their marriage breakdown aside and make their daughter their top priority.

“Jane and I made the decision that, no matter what our feelings were, Grace would always come first,” Anthony says.

So, their daughter spent half her time with her mum and the other half with her dad – and all the while, Jane and Anthony remained close friends.

Grace counts both of her parents as “biological.” Credit: Supplied

But two years later, Anthony met Chris at the gym – the romantic spark catching both men off guard.

Neither Chris nor Anthony was openly gay.

“I was confused for 30 years,” Chris shares about his sexuality.

Anthony was also coming to terms with his new-found attraction to Chris.

The couple entered a romantic relationship and both slowly came out to their nearest and dearest.

Anthony recalls the moment he nervously introduced his new boyfriend to his ex-wife.

“Jane welcomed Chris with open arms. She instantly brought him into the fold,” he says.

Chris also remembers the angst of introducing his male partner to his large Greek family.

“I remember my first Christmas, my family were just coming to terms with me coming out just a few months before,” he explains.

“I was like, ‘This is my boyfriend Anthony, his daughter Grace, oh and his ex-wife, Jane’.”

Despite their apprehension, Chris and Anthony were warmly embraced – and Chris was instantly welcomed as a co-parent to Grace.

For her part, the youngster beamed with delight over her “two dads.”

“Grace and I would strut down the aisles of the supermarket like supermodels,” Chris smiles.

Anthony adds: “There was so much change for Grace. First mum and dad split up and now dad has a new boyfriend. It was a lot.”

Like any family, the blended unit had ups and downs – with Grace often trying to sway the parenting situation in her favour.

“There was a lot of, ‘Well, mum said I could do that’ sort of thing,” Anthony says.

“But because we are so close, I would just call up Jane and ask her.”

Before long, Grace understood the parenting dynamic – and was proud to claim Chris as her “other” father.

Two dads, one mum

For her early education, the parents opted to place her in a “progressive school” where other children also engendered diverse family units.

“It was great. She wasn’t the only one at school with two gay dads,” Anthony says.

But as Grace grew older, she began meeting people outside her “bubble” who had conflicting opinions on her home-life situation.

Anthony and Chris have been together for 13 years. Credit: Supplied

“We realized that this sort of support doesn’t exist all over Australia, and even all over the world,” Anthony says.

severe bullying

Seeing Grace come home with questions about the family unit deeply resonated with her two dads.

Having kept their sexuality secret for so long, for fear of ridicule and rejection, both men had experienced bullying growing up.

“Chris was teased because he was fat, I was teased because I was too skinny,” Anthony reveals, adding he endured three years of name calling because he wore a back brace for scoliosis.

But for Chris, the bullying went far deeper.

Every day at lunch, school bullies would consistently throw cruel jibes, including branding him fat and a nerd.

The constant taunting built ever up in Chris’ mind and, as a teenager, he became suicidal.

The unique family unit are hoping their skincare line can raise awareness for differences. Credit: Supplied

The trauma of his adolescence remained with him well into adulthood.

One day, he was triggered at work and the playground trauma resurfaced.

He was recently diagnosed with PTSD as a result.

“Bullying starts because of differences and labels,” Anthony says.

making a difference

Luckily for Grace, she didn’t share the same experience, although some of her friends did.

During COVID-19 lockdowns, feelings of isolation among her cohort grew.

“Grace was telling us how people were going,” Anthony says, adding that the parents were horrified to hear her speak of her peers’ experiences with anxiety and depression.

The men couldn’t bear the thought of any child suffering through feelings similar to their own at that age.

According to research by social analyst company McCrindle, three in five students have reported bullying – a statistic the fathers just can’t fathom.

All proceeds for Unlabelled go towards charity. Credit: Supplied

So they wanted to try to make a significant contribution towards youth suicide awareness and prevention programs.

They decided to launch a non-for-profit skincare company – and give 100 per cent of the profits to the cause.

“We want to celebrate everyone’s differences and embrace them,” Chris says.

“The more you expose people to differences, the less confronting it becomes.

“And we want kids to be proud of who they are, and their own differences.”

As the pair began early work for the project, they turned to Grace for inspiration.

The unique range of body wash, hand wash and soap inspire each user to embrace their true self. Credit: Supplied

“Grace said, ‘Dad if I want to kiss a girl I want to kiss a girl, if I want to kiss a boy I want to kiss a boy, and I don’t people to label me,’” Anthony says.

So the idea of naming the brand Unlabelled was born.

Everything for the products is sourced and made in Melbourne.

All profits from every purchase of Unlabelled go directly to one of Anthony and Chris’ four chosen charities: Headspace, Kids Helpline, the Black Dog Institute or Qlife.

Journey isn’t over

Chris and Anthony hope their not-for-profit work, and their personal story, will help others embrace ways of life that might be different from their own.

After all, they say, Grace, her mum and her two dads aren’t that different from every other Aussie family.

From their family group chats, to dinner once a fortnight, Jane, Anthony and Chris will always share one thing in common – their immense love for their daughter.

YouTuber Builds Gaming PC Out Of Working Toilet

A YouTuber built a PC out of a working toilet, creating what might be the first toilet capable of both handling your waste and playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. What a world we live in!

As spotted by Eurogamer, YouTuber Basically Homeless cut a deal with the electronics store Microcenter to create a gaming PC inside of an actual toilet, complete with all the plumbing and water that entails. It’s a wild thing, but not surprising. You see, for as long as we have had toilets and video games, many have tried to combine them. Even I have heard that siren’s call and attempted to poop and game at the same time. Countless others do so while playing games on their phones.

But Basically Homeless didn’t want to simply bring a Switch or phone or even a Steam Deck into the bathroom. Instead, he wanted to create a setup that would let him play 120hz FPS shooters with a mouse and keyboard while sitting on a toilet. And in his video documenting the entire processI was shocked both by the end results and the lack of planning.

Basically Homeless

The way this thing works is one half of the tank contains all the toilet bits and bobs along with the water. Then he built a “Water Wall” out of plexiglass and glue. On the other side of the wall are all the computer parts. The idea was to keep them separate, letting you flush the working toilet while playing games. Also, built into the lid is a fan to help keep the PC cool.

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that the first time he connected the toilet to the water supply his hacked-together “Water Wall” failed and he ended up having to use a whole can of Flexseal inside the tank to protect the valuable PC electronics. However, now that he’s gotten everything working (including the RGB lighting), the finished PC/toilet hybrid is oddly impressive. Thanks to a large cutout in the front, you can see both the functioning toilet and the running PC.

According to Basically Homeless, he had to learn basic plumbing and how to cut porcelain to create this bizarre PC. The end result is both a conversation starter and a man who can now fix his own toilet. Truly a win, win situation.

OnlyFans job for nurse who was shocked to learn boyfriend had secret family – who she was paying for

A former nurse says she was forced to start a risky but high-paying job – after discovering her boyfriend had a secret family that she had been paying for.

Dara, 37, from Brooklyn in New York, regularly shares sexy snaps with her 271,000 followers on Instagram.

But the pursuit morphed into her joining OnlyFans, and she now makes more than 16 times what she previously earned as a newborn intensive care unit nurse.

Dara needed the money after finding out her partner had another, secret girlfriend – who was eight months pregnant.

Even more shockingly, she claims her ex had been using her money to cover his budding family’s expenses.

In June 2019, Dara was working as a NICU nurse.

Although living pay to pay, she was also supporting her boyfriend – even agreeing to move across the US to live with him.

A month after moving to the Big Apple, Dara uncovered the truth about her boyfriend.

Not only did he have a heavily pregnant girlfriend, but Dara was financing them both.

“I found out through Facebook,” she told JamPrime.com.

“We were about to go and meet his mum, who lives abroad, and I went to follow her and noticed she was ‘friends’ with a profile of his that I didn’t know about.

“When I clicked on this alternative profile, I saw photos from a baby shower for his other girlfriend.

“I was so shocked, hurt and angry.”

Stuck in a lease in a swanky New York flat, Dara ditched her boyfriend.

But she soon found herself struggling to pay her bills.

Looking for new ways to make ends meet – and wanting to show her ex what he was missing – she decided to try OnlyFans, launching her account in 2018.

Within her first month, she made $US30,000 ($A43,100) – the equivalent of her yearly nursing salary.

Now, she makes more than $A722,500 per year – and it’s all thanks to her cheating ex.

“I have a lot of pride and decided to just figure my financial situation out, rather than let a man take advantage of me,” Dara said.

“When I fell into debt, I ditched him, then got rid of my car, which was a money guzzler, and started an OnlyFans.

“The rest is history.”

In the beginning, she mostly posted behind-the-scenes images from photo shoots, but she couldn’t believe how much money was coming in.

“I remember thinking ‘I’m going to post whatever makes me as much money as possible’ and now I’m debt-free,” she said.

“For the first time, I can actually save money.”

Dara’s new job means she has turned her back on 13 years in health care but she has not looked back.

“I don’t plan to return to nursing as long as I keep making good money,” she said.

“I loved watching my patients grow and go home.

“But the job started to take a toll on my mental health.

“Being a nurse is emotionally taxing when you work in the intensive care unit, and I wasn’t making enough to make ends meet.

“I don’t regret my decision.”

As for her former partner, Dara reveals he still tries to contact her and he knows about her OnlyFans career.

She said: “He still contacts me to this day but I’ve blocked him.

“I want nothing to do with him.”
