North Carolina county to place an AR-15 in each school in response to the Uvalde massacre

A North Carolina school system will place AR-15s in each school building this upcoming school year in a dramatic move meant to buff up school safety,

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and school officials have decided to place the weapons in all six schools in the county when classes begin later this month in response to the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 students and two teachers.

Each of the guns would be locked inside a safe, as well as extra ammunition and breaching tools, Sheriff Buddy Harwood told the Asheville Citizen-Times. He noted the delayed response by law enforcement to stop the attack on Robb Elementary School in May was a rationale for the measure.

“Those officers were in that building for so long, and that suspect was able to infiltrate that building and injure and kill so many kids,” Harwood told the newspaper. “I just want to make sure my deputies are prepared in the event that happens.”

There will be school resource officers at each of the six schools, including the three elementary schools, according to the Citizen-Times.

Officers have been training with instructors from Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College, he said.

“The reason we put the breaching tools in the safes is that in the event we have someone barricaded in a door, we won’t have to wait on the fire department to get there,” Harwood told the outlet.

“We’ll have those tools to be able to breach that door if needed. I do not want to have to run back out to the car to grab an AR, because that’s time wasted.

“Hopefully we’ll never need it, but I want my guys to be as prepared as prepared can be.”

Ahead of the Aug. 22 start of the school year, Madison County Superintendent Will Hoffman said school leaders have been meeting with local law enforcement to review various safety measures.

“I hate that we’ve come to a place in our nation where I’ve got to put a safe in our schools, and lock that safe up for my deputies to be able to acquire an AR-15,” Harwood told the Citizen -Times.

“But, we can shut it off and say it won’t happen in Madison County, but we never know. I want the parents of Madison County to know we’re going to take every measure necessary to ensure our kids are safe in this school system.

“If my parents, as a whole, want me to stand at that door with that AR strapped around that officer’s neck, then I’m going to do whatever my parents want as a whole to keep our kids safe.”

Officials say 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt died from a gunshot wound and multiple sharp force injuries. His wife, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt, died from multiple sharp force injuries. Their daughter, 6-year-old Lula Schmidt, died from a gunshot wound and strangulation. All three family members’ deaths have been ruled homicides. The family’s 9-year-old son Arlo Schmidt survived the attack. The family is from Cedar Falls. Many there have paid tribute to them in recent weeks. The McDonald’s worker who was shot in the neck over cold french fries is brain-dead and on life support, prosecutors said Thursday, as a Brooklyn judge ordered his alleged assailant held without bail.

Michael Morgan, 20, is expected to face upgraded homicide charges for Monday’s Bedford-Stuyvesant shooting, in which he allegedly blasted victim Matthew Webb, 23, shortly after an argument about the French fries served to the suspect’s mother, prosecutors said.

“Your Honor, the people anticipate a homicide charge on this case given the victim is currently on life support. The victim has been transported to Brookdale Hospital and has been brain-dead,” Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Luis Paternina told Judge Inga O’Neale during Morgan’s arraignment on attempted murder charges.

“The family now has to make the difficult decision [to take him off life support].”

Morgan, who was cuffed behind his back, looked down during the brief proceeding and didn’t speak.

Webb was serving at the Fulton Street eatery on Monday evening when Morgan’s mom, Lisa Fulmore, complained to workers that her fries were cold and asked to speak to a manager.

When the workers began laughing at her, Fulmore was FaceTiming with Morgan, who came to the restaurant and got into a fight with Webb that spilled out onto the sidewalk.

Morgan punched Webb in the face and when he got back up, he pulled out a gun and blasted him in the neck, prosecutors alleged.

The suspect’s girlfriend, Camellia Dunlap, has also been charged in connection with the case after she allegedly handed Morgan the gun prior to the shooting, prosecutors said.

Morgan was taken into custody at his home Monday night and following hours of questioning, he confessed to the shooting and an unrelated 2020 homicide a few blocks from the McDonald’s that left Kevin Holloman, 28, dead, prosecutors alleged.

Holloman was outside a Herkimer Street building with his cousin that October when Morgan allegedly fatally shot him, prosecutors said.

A few days prior, Morgan and Holloman’s cousin got into an altercation and when the relative took out a knife to cut up some marijuana, the suspect ran out of the apartment and began shooting, prosecutors alleged.

The cousin wasn’t hit but Holloman was struck three times and later died at Interfaith Hospital, prosecutors said.

“He was the sweetest kid. He was not like these little thugs we have running around here. He was so polite. He was always chasing girls. That was it. Chasing girls, making jokes,” Domingo Rivera, a longtime former neighbor of Holloman, told The Post Thursday.

“[He] was a good kid. I have never got into trouble. He was always dancing and joking around.”

Rivera, 57, referred to Holloman by his nickname “Keybo” and said after he was murdered, his mother soon got sick and died.

“I’m glad they got him,” Rivera said of Morgan.

Holloman’s sister also celebrated the news in a Wednesday Facebook post.

“The first person I wanted to call with this news was my mother and I couldn’t I’m still heartbroken but I’m happy me and my family get some kind of peace,” she wrote with a series of green and white heart emoji.

Morgan is charged with murder in the 2020 slay and was held without bail in both cases. He’s due back in court on August 8. Relatives of Morgan and Webb couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

80% of NYC gun suspects get released from custody following arrest: Eric Adams

More than 80% of pistol-packing perps were put back on the streets after getting busted for gun possession in New York City this year, Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday.

“When it comes to guns, this year, 2,386 people were arrested with a gun. Of those, approximately 1,921 are out on the street,” Adams said during a news conference on bail reform and recidivism.

“Arrested with a gun, out on the street.”

Adams added: “Gun arrests in custody: 19.5%. Out of custody: over 80%.”

“How do you take a gun law seriously when the overwhelming numbers are back on the streets after carrying a gun?” I have asked.

Adams also highlighted the number of gun suspects who’ve been re-arrested — and re-released.

“This year, 165 people were arrested with a second gun charge,” he said.

“Of those, 82 — out on the street. Not one arrest but two gun arrests — back out on the street,” he smoked.

Adams didn’t specify how many defendants were released without bail or how many posted bail to get sprung.

All gun-possession charges are eligible for bail under New York law, which requires judges to impose the least restrictive conditions necessary to ensure defendants return to court.

In 2019, the year before the state’s controversial bail reform law took effect, “we arrested 80 people for a gun crime who had an open gun arrest,” Adams said.

In 2021, he said, “the number was 259” — more than three times as many.

Adams also said that in 2019, 20 people arrested in shootings already had pending gun-possession charges but that last year, the number spiked nearly fourfold, to 77.

Also during Wednesday’s news conference at One Police Plaza, NYPD Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael Lipetri said, “We like to talk about credible messengers when we work with our social service providers … to deliver the message to the crew member about stop the violence. ”

But Lipetri said that “the credible messenger today in New York City is the crew member that was arrested with a gun yesterday, that’s out today, that’s telling that crew, ‘Well, look at me, I can carry a gun in New York City .’”

Lipetri said the NYPD was investigating 716 suspected of committing 30% of the roughly 2,400 shootings that have taken place since 2021.

“Of those individuals, 54% — almost 385 — today have an open felony,” he said.
