Anne Heche car accident update: ‘Not expected to survive’ as family release statement

Anne Heche’s family have released a statement following her horror car crash last week, saying she’s “not expected to survive.”

The 53-year-old US actress has been in a coma since the accident in Los Angeles last Friday.

“Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma in critical condition,” a representative said in a statement on behalf of Heche’s family, obtained by People. “She is not expected to survive.”

Heche’s rep added that the actress was being kept on life support to “determine if her organs are viable”.

“It has long been her choice to donate her organs,” Heche’s rep said.

Heche’s family went on to thank wellwishers for their support over the last few days, before talking about the star’s legacy.

“We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital,” the statement said.

“Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit. More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love.

“She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”

It comes after police confirmed earlier today that Heche tested positive for cocaine and possibly fentanyl at the time of her crash.

Los Angeles Police Department sources told TMZ that the actress’ blood test results came up positive for both substances.

However, the law enforcement insiders cautioned that fentanyl may have been administered to Heche at the hospital to help manage her pain after the accident, so they will do more testing to determine whether the fentanyl was in her system at the time of the crash, Page Six reports.

the Six Days Seven Nights actress, who dated Ellen DeGeneres in the ’90s, has been in an “extreme critical condition” at the medical center following the collision in Mar Vista, which also destroyed a house and displaced a woman and her dogs.

“She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention,” Heche’s rep said earlier this week.

“She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”

Meanwhile, DeGeneres gave a surprisingly curt response yesterday when asked by a photographer about her former girlfriend.

When asked on Thursday if she’d checked in on Heche since the crash, DeGeneres said simply: “No, have not. We’re not in touch with each other, so I wouldn’t know.”

When asked if she wanted to send Heche any well-wishes, DeGeneres again kept it brief. “Sure… I don’t want anyone to be hurt,” she said.

DeGeneres and Heche were arguably Hollywood’s most visible same-sex couple for the three years they were together, from 1997 to 2000.

Capel Court scammers steal $250k from NSW widow, $2.56m stolen altogether

A group of sophisticated scammers have stolen a quarter of a million dollars from a widow in NSW.

Lily*, a retiree from the NSW Mid North Coast near Port Macquarie, has been left reeling after learning she poured her $250,000 fortune into a fake investment scam.

The woman’s term deposit account was maturing and she was searching for a better return on her money.

In February this year, she was paying for her groceries at her local Woolworths when she picked up a magazine that had an advertisement inside it for an investment company called Capel Court.

“I contacted Capel Court as a result of the advert in the publication I’d seen, I’d noted the phone number and I rang them,” Lily recalled.

The so-called investment company had an online login portal and multiple employees with mobile and office phone numbers listed.

After going back and forth with company representatives for several weeks, including having a solicitor look things over, Lily eventually transferred her money in March believing she was investing in a European Investment Bank government bond.

Just a few months later news.com.au exposed that the Capel Court investment scheme was a sham. Including Lily’s losses, scammers have stolen at least $2.5 million that news.com.au knows of from six Australian victims. The highest individual loss totaled $750,000 and even an accountant in his 40s fell for the scheme.

After coming across the article and realizing she had been duped, Lily said, “I was stone cold, absolutely shocked. Probably for two weeks I cried on and off.”

Lily doesn’t have children and her husband has passed away so she was planning to leave whatever was left of her life savings to medical research to help cancer and Alzheimer’s patients.

She spoke to two different scammers who called themselves David Jones and Stephen Jones who answered all her questions and guided her through the process.

They promised her a 6.45 per cent return on her investment, with documents to back that up, which would mean she would be receiving $16,000 per year from dividends.

They tried to pressure her into depositing the money by saying there were limited spots available in the bonds fund as it was oversubscribed.

Lily almost wasn’t able to deposit her money because of the flooding along the east coast earlier this year.

“The flooding came between where I lived and where the bank was,” she said.

During the floods, the scammers called her up several times trying to get her to send the $250,000 onto them.

Finally, on March 10, Lily went into her local Westpac branch and by teletransfer, she moved $250,000 into a bank account for an instant payment system called Cuscal.

She claims bank staff didn’t ask questions and partly blames them for this unfortunate situation.

“I didn’t have any more contact [with the scammers] after everything was signed and sealed,” she said.

In May, Lily learned she had been scammed after reading news.com.au’s previous articles.

Sure enough, when she went on the website had disappeared and she wasn’t able to get in touch with David or Stephen Jones.

“I’ve had a shocking two and a half months. I have to be [upbeat] otherwise I’d be so depressed I’d probably top myself,” she said.

Westpac wouldn’t comment on Lily’s individual case citing privacy reasons. They did not respond to questions about how they allowed an elderly woman to transfer $250,000 in one payment without raising the alarm.

“There has been a rise in investment scam activity, and we encourage all Australians to be vigilant,” a bank spokesperson said.

“Westpac invests heavily in scam prevention and has robust processes in place to alert and protect customers. We work hard to recover money for customers where possible.

“Investment scams often promise low risk for high returns. We encourage people to do their research and seek independent financial advice before making an investment.”

Sadly, this is not the first time this scamming syndicate has duped Australians out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

News.com.au has previously reported on this same group of scammers, who posed as Barclays and Macquarie Bank and EQR Securities.

They scammed one Melbourne man out of $700,000, another schoolteacher out of $500,000, a retired couple lost $200,000 and an accountant fell for it too, losing $160,000. Another widow lost $750,000.

In October last year, retired Queensland couple Antje and Bardhold Blecken had $200,000 stolen from them when they mistakenly believed they were investing in a Barclays Bank term deposit.

Then in March, Melbourne man Andy* thought he was investing $700,000 into bonds with Capel Court. It was fake and he lost his life savings.

Robert*, an accountant, also sank $160,000 into the fraudulent Capel Court group while NSW couple Jody and Corey Bridges lost $500,000 to the same scam.

Michelle Lowry transferred $750,000 to EQR Securities in December last year, which also turned out to be fake.

News.com.au can definitively link these separate scam websites because the same aliases and mobile numbers were used by the fraudsters.

The scammers used multiple aliases including William Hughes, Ben Davis, Jacob Price, Oliver James and of course David Jones.

These particular scammers are fans of rapid payment platforms like Cuscal, Money Tech/Monoova and also cryptocurrency platforms including Binance, TechMarket AU/ED Australia and ElBaite. They have also used bank accounts through the Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Citibank and NAB to channel money. It’s understood many of these accounts are under investigation.

In May, news.com.au reported on Melbourne widow Jacomi Du Preez, who lost $760,000 from the life insurance payout of her husband in an elaborate Macquarie Bank term deposit website that turned out to be fake.

Luckily, Ms Du Preez realized it was a scam within a day and was able to recover all her money.

A cyber security expert, Nick Savvides, told news.com.au these particular scams are “sophisticated” and “well-resourced”.

He believes it is likely they had a group of at least 20 people working together to steal large sums of money.

The money has probably ended up overseas and could be part of an organized crime gang.

Fourteen passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and four passengers were not hurt.

The victims were identified as 59-year-old Cheryl Johnson, from the Bronx, and Cecilia Kiyanitza, 66, of Woodbury, New Jersey.

Former South African cricket umpire Rudi Koertzen, labeled the ‘slow finger of death’, has died in a car accident aged 73.

“Rudi suffered fatal injuries after an accident near Stilbaai between Cape Town and Gqeberha,” said a family spokesman.

“My father went to a golf tournament with some friends and they were expected to come back on Monday, but it seems they decided to play another round of golf,” his son Rudi told a Gqeberha radio station.

The South African team will wear black armbands on Wednesday in honor of Koertzen when they face England at Lord’s in London in a Test match.

Koertzen first umpired in 1981, handled his maiden international assignment 11 years later, and retired in 2010 after a Test between Australia and Pakistan in Leeds, England.

He became known as the ‘slow finger of death’ because he very slowly raising his finger whenever indicating a batsman was out.

His death rocked the cricket world.

Umpire and long-time colleague Aleem Dar paid tribute to Koertzen: “It is a very big loss forever for his family and then for South Africa and cricket. I stood in so many games with him. He was not only very good as an umpire but also an excellent colleague, always very cooperative on the field and also always willing to help off the field. Because of the way he was, he was also well respected by the players.”

Australian great Jason Gillespie wrote: “RIP Rudy- very good umpire, nice man. Thoughts are with his family and friends of him. ”

Indian star Virender Sehwag wrote: “Ok Rudi Koertzen! Om Shanti. Condolences to his family from him. Had a great relationship with him. Whenever I used to play a rash shot, he used to scold me saying, “Play sensibly, I want to watch your batting.”

“Every umpire has their trademark and that was mine. The media labeled it the ‘slow finger of death’ and I found that pretty interesting. There is a story behind it,” Koertzen said in an interview.

“When my umpiring career first began, I used to hold my hands in front of me and every time there was an appeal, I would fold them against my ribs.

“The someone told me ‘Rudi, you cannot do that. Every time you raise your hands to fold them, the bowler thinks you are going to give him a wicket’.

“So I started clasping my wrists at the back. The finger comes out slowly because it takes time for me to release my grasp at the back.”

Officers believe Heche, 53, may have been intoxicated when she ploughed her blue Mini Cooper into an LA home, igniting a massive fire that torched her and her car.

“The info we received this morning was a warrant that was obtained the same day as the traffic collision, which was August 5. The warrant was to draw blood, and an investigation is ongoing pending the blood test results,” a rep for the LAPD said.

“If found intoxicated, [Heche] could be charged with misdemeanor DUI hit and run. No arrests have been made so far.”

A red-capped bottle could be seen in Heche’s car’s cupholder in a photo TMZ reports was taken before the accident.

According to eyewitnesses, the actress first crashed into the garage of a nearby apartment complex but backed up and sped off before residents could help her.

Officials with the LAPD West Traffic Division have confirmed she hit another vehicle before slamming into the house that went up in flames.

Photos from the scene captured Heche being put on a stretcher and showed serious injuries to her back, while aerial shots documented smoke billowing out of the house into which she drove as well as numerous fire trucks surrounding the area.

Heche, also known for a high-profile romance with Ellen DeGeneres in the 1990s, has been open about her struggles with substance abuse.

“I drink. I smoked. I did drugs. I had sex with people. I did anything I could to get the shame out of my life, ”she told ABC News in 2020, explaining that she spent much of her childhood getting sexually abused by her father.

“I’m not crazy,” the Six Days Seven Nights star said at the time.

“But it’s a crazy life. I was raised in a crazy family. And it took 31 years to get the crazy out of me.”

Queensland Cup cult hero and Ipswich Jets winger — who tried out with Melbourne Storm — dies, aged 28, after car carsh

An Ipswich Jets and Queensland Cup cult hero — and Melbourne Storm triallist — has died suddenly in Queensland, aged 28 years.

WARNING: Readers are advised that this story contains the name and images of an Indigenous sportsman who has died.

Michael Purcell — who was also known as “The Kangaroo Catcher” during his time at the Jets — died on Sunday after a car crash in Brisbane.

Tributes have flowed for the popular winger, who scored 68 tries in 82 games for the Jets and Easts Tigers.

“We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former Suzuki Brisbane Tigers Hostplus Cup player Michael Purcell, also known as ‘the Kangaroo Catcher’,” the Tigers said in a statement.

“Purcey, 28-years young, was Tigers player no. 1,344 and played nine games for the Tigers across the 2020 and 2021 Hostplus Cup seasons before being a part of Bulimba Bulldogs BRL Premier Grade squad in 2022.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Purcey’s family, friends, those he played with at the Tigers, Bulimba Bulldogs, Brothers, Ipswich Jets and the wider rugby league community.”

Purcell’s exploits led to him spending a pre-season with the Storm in 2021 before he returned to Queensland.

“Sending our deepest condolences to the family of Michael Purcell after his sudden passing,” the Storm said in a statement.

“Michael spent time with us during the pre-season of 2021 and also featured in our Albury trial.

“Our thoughts are with Purcey’s family and friends during this time.”

A serious knee problem had limited Purcell to one appearance this season — he made his return from injury with Brisbane A-grade club Bulimba.

At his best, Purcell was counted as one of the fastest players in Queensland, with his nickname coming from a story where he supposedly raced down a kangaroo in a cross-country race.

He also ran the New York Marathon in 2011 as part of athletics legend Robert de Castella’s Marathon Project.

Anne Heche car crash: ‘Horrific’ new details of actress’ accident

An eyewitness to actress Anne Heche’s life-threatening car accident in Los Angeles shared new details on the crash with Fox News Digital today.

It has also emerged that Heche had joked about drinking vodka with wine chasers in an episode of her podcast that was published online on the day of the crash – and has since been scrubbed from the internet.

Heche complains of ‘very bad day’ on podcast

Heche complained of having a “bad day” and told listeners she was drinking vodka and wine in the latest episode of her podcast, published online just hours before her crash and since removed from the internet.

It’s not clear when the podcast was recorded. She and co-host Heather Duffy both speak of drinking free vodka provided by them by a podcast sponsor and washing it down with white wine, while Heche opens up about having had a “very bad day.”

“I don’t know what happened, sometimes days just suck and I don’t know if you ever have them [but] some days, those no good, very bad days, and some days just end up like this,” Heche told listeners.

“Sometimes days just suck and I don’t know if you ever have them, but you know some days, Mama says just gonna be like this. Some days there’s those no good, very bad days,” she continued.

Witness describes ‘horrific’ scenes

A witness to Heche’s crash, Lynne Bernstein, detailed the crash as “horrific” and said he could “hardly breathe” when trying to assist Heche out of the blue Mini Cooper she was driving.

“The smoke was just getting way too intense, we could hardly breathe,” Bernstein said. “The smoke was making it difficult to see.”

Bernstein said that he and his wife witnessed a car going down their street at a “high rate of speed” before his wife heard Heche’s car crash into their neighbor’s house.

Bernstein noted that his neighbor, Dave Manpearl, asked Heche if she was alright and she responded that she was not. The Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene, asked the neighbors if anyone was in the house and they alerted the first responders that a woman was inside.

The tenant of the house exited her home from a side room and was “shocked” by what had happened. “Get out of my house,” the tenant told the group of people outside her home before she realized a car had struck her home from her.

Dave took the tenant’s two dogs to his home. Bernstein noted that the tenant was “perfectly fine, thank God” following the explosive crash.

Bernstein shared with Fox News Digital that Heche was “conscious” but he did not know how “coherent” she was following the crash.

Manpearl exited the car when flames overtook it.

“I was positive that the driver was dead,” he told the Daily Mail “That she had burned up. It took at least 30 minutes for the fire department to douse the flames, extract the car from her and pull her out of the car.

Heche crashed a vehicle into a Mar Vista, California, home, Friday, igniting a fire, and was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to emergency responders.

A resident was present at the time of the accident at the home and escaped injury. Heche, however, sustained burn injuries and was “conscious and breathing” when she was placed on a stretcher.

A second witness spoke with Fox News Digital outside the homeowner’s home where the damage from the crash is clearly seen.

The crash “scared the entire neighborhood,” Yaroslav Borets told Fox News Digital. “Something we will remember for a long time.” Borets noted that his neighborhood of him is “not the kind neighborhood that knows everyone next door.”

“This is generally a safe place,” he said, explaining that this type of accident doesn’t often occur in the Mar Vista neighborhood.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department, told Fox News Digital the person involved in the accidents was transferred to a hospital in critical condition.

The Los Angeles Fire Department shared a statement saying the vehicle had a single occupant when it rammed into a two-storey home built in 1952.

“Fifty-nine firefighters took 65 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure and rescued one female adult found within the vehicle who has been taken to an area hospital by LAFD Paramedics in critical condition,” the statement said.

No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, according to FOX 11.

Heche, who has admitted to using drugs and alcohol in the past, famously dated Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000, the NY Post reported.

After their relationship ended, a shaken and disoriented Heche drove to Fresno and knocked on the door of a stranger. She was briefly hospitalized after the incident.

Heche has said in past interviews that she was molested by her father, Don Heche, from the time she was a toddler to age 12. Don Heche died of AIDS in 1983 and Anne has said he lived a double life as a closet homosexual.

Heche’s brother Nathan died in a car crash three months after the death of their father, which Anne has suggested was a suicide.
