Piastri's stance has knock-on effects for other teams

LONDON, Aug 10 (Reuters) – Oscar Piastri’s rift with Alpine has also forced a change of plan at Williams and could have a knock-on effect around the Formula One paddock.

While the main focus has been on Renault-owned Alpine and McLaren, who both want the 21-year-old Australian to drive for them next season, tail-enders Williams have had to reassess their next step.

Alpine’s original plan was to loan their reserve, and last year’s Formula Two champion, to Williams for at least a year and possibly more until he returned as Fernando Alonso’s replacement.

The principle was the same as when Mercedes placed George Russell for three seasons at Williams to learn the ropes before bringing him back as team mate to seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Talks were so far advanced that the Australian had a seat fitting at Williams and a contract for 2023 was drawn up between the two teams, with Alpine having already agreed on Piastri’s salary.

Then Alonso decided to race for Aston Martin next year and Piastri, offered the Alpine seat, said no — with a McLaren deal apparently more tempting. read more

Piastri would have replaced Canadian Nicholas Latifi at Williams, the only driver on the starting grid who has yet to score a point in 13 races this season, alongside British-born Thai Alexander Albon.

Latifi brings sponsorship and could potentially retain the seat, with many of the potential replacements lacking such financial clout.

With Alpine currently fourth in the championship and Williams last, the seat spurned by Piastri is the most attractive.

If Alpine do not take McLaren’s soon-to-be-discarded Australian Daniel Ricciardo, then they may be in the same market as Williams.

One possibility who stands out is current Formula E champion and 2019 Formula Two title-holder Nyck de Vries, a Mercedes F1 reserve who has already taken part in Friday first practice with Williams.

De Vries, 27, is also looking for a seat for 2023, with Mercedes pulling out of Formula E after selling their championship-leading team to McLaren.

Williams have 21-year-old American Logan Sargeant on their books, with team boss Jost Capito saying last month that he saw the F2 driver as a prospect for the future, but it may be too early for him. read more

The future of Mick Schumacher, currently with Ferrari-powered Haas, has yet to be determined while China’s former Alpine academy driver Guanyu Zhou is having a solid first season at Alfa Romeo.

Alfa, run by Swiss-based Sauber with former Renault team boss Fred Vasseur at the helm, have 18-year-old French F2 prospect Theo Pourchaire on their books as a talent for the future.

Beyond that there are racers looking for a way back into Formula One and others, such as India’s Jehan Daruvala, hoping for a door to open from the junior series.

“I’ve had all sorts of people (calling),” Alpine principal Otmar Szafnauer told Reuters this week. “Some of the guys in the junior formulas, some of the Formula E guys. Maybe eight or 10.”

A new photo shows Kiely Rodni at a Truckee business hours before the 16-year-old went missing. She was last seen August 6, 2022 at a party at a campground in Truckee. Dive crews have begun searching a nearby lake for her.

The missing teen was last seen at a party at a campground, but the security camera image shows her earlier in the night at a Truckee business.

The picture shows Kiely in a black bodysuit, green pants and black Vans shoes as she stood among racks of apparel and other merchandise. That photo was taken hours before she attended a party with hundreds of other young people at the Prosser Family Campground, according to the Placer County sheriff’s office.

The search for Kiely has widened in recent days with 265 officers from local, state, and federal agencies combing the campground and other nearby areas. Dive teams have started searching the Prosser Reservoir for signs of her de ella or her Honda CRV de ella, which has also not been found.

Kiely texted her mother to say she was going home from the party. Her cellphone pinged shortly after that, but she has been inactive for days, the sheriff’s office said.

Search continues for missing teen Kiely Rodni

Search and rescue crews in Truckee plan to keep looking for Kiely Rodni, a 16-year-old who has not been seen since attending a party at a campground in Truckee.

The sheriff’s office has reportedly said they were looking to see if Kiely had been abducted, although officials said Tuesday that this was still a missing person case.

Her mother had made a heartfelt plea for her return in a video released earlier this week.

“We just want her home. We’re so scared. We miss her so much and we love her,” her mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman said as she choked back tears in a video shared by the sheriff’s office. “Kiely, we love you, and if you see this, please just come home. I want nothing more than to hug you.”

DA announces arrest, charges against two suspects who killed Monterey Park police officer

Two suspects have been arrested for fatally shooting a Monterey Park police officer in Downey. According to the DA’s office, Gardiel Solorio was killed during an attempted robbery.

THE ANGELS – Two people – including a 17-year-old – have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an off-duty Monterey Park police officer who was gunned down outside an LA Fitness in Downey on Monday.

Gardiel Solorio, 26, was shot multiple times while sitting in his car outside the gym in a busy shopping center located in the 12000 block of Lakewood Boulevard Monday around 3:45 pm.

Officials said the suspect, Carlos Delcid, 20, approached Solorio as he was sitting inside his car and tried to rob him. Security footage shows Solorio’s car backing up and slamming into a parked van as he tried to get away. That’s when Delcid allegedly shot Solorio five times at close range, authorities said.

Delcid fled the scene in a car driven by a 17-year-old, LA County DA George Gascón announced Wednesday. He said his office will also be filing charges against the getaway driver.

Monterey Park police killing: 2 including juvenile arrested, charged

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced charges against two people involved in the killing of off-duty Monterey Park Police officer Gardiel Solorio.

Delcid was arrested and charged with one count each of murder, attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon with the special circumstance allegation that the murder was committed during a robbery.

Gascón said they will be seeking life without the possibility of parole for Delcid.

At this time authorities do not believe Solorio was targeted because he is a police officer.

“Senseless gun violence has once again taken someone who pledged to protect and serve others,” Gascón said.

Los Angeles County jail records show Delcid has been booked a half-dozen times in the past year — the most recent coming Tuesday, a day after Downey police arrested him. He is being held on $2 million bail.

Solorio had joined the department as a recruit in January, but only graduated from the sheriff’s training academy on July 22, and began his field training on July 25.

Multiple arrests made in killing of off-duty Monterey Park police officer

Authorities tell FOX 11 they do not believe Gardiel Solorio was targeted because he was a police officer.

“We all knew from the moment we met him that he had the heart of service and was going to be a great officer,” MPPD Chief Kelly Gordon said. “And I could tell that from the moment he walked in and did our first introductions in my office. The family and department are grieving right now, and this is an especially difficult tragedy. It’s a senseless act of violence. He was only 26 years old. I don’t know about all of you, but I have children that age. So to me this is particularly difficult.”

Friends of Solorio said he dreamed of being a policeman since he was a child.

“He was living his dream. Why would someone kill him outside the gym?” a friend said.

We are learning more about the off-duty Monterey Park police officer killed in broad daylight in Downey.

A procession was held Monday night as Solorio’s body was transported from the crime scene to the LA County coroner’s office.

Solorio is survived by his parents, brothers, sisters and fiancée. His family of him has started a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral expenses

Aug 8 (Reuters) – The United States will provide an additional $4.5 billion to Ukraine’s government, bringing its total budgetary support since Russia’s February invasion to $8.5 billion, the US Agency for International Development said on Monday.

The funding, coordinated with the US Treasury Department through the World Bank, will go to the Ukraine government in tranches, beginning with a $3 billion disbursement in August, USAID, the Agency for International Development, said.

It follows previous transfers of $1.7 billion in July and $1.3 billion in June, USAID said. Washington has also provided billions of dollars in military and security support. The Pentagon announced a $1 billion arms aid package on Monday. read more

Overall, the United States has contributed more than $18 billion to Ukraine this year.

The new budgetary funds are to help the Ukrainian government maintain essential functions, including social and financial assistance for the growing poor population, children with disabilities, and millions of internally displaced persons, as the war drags on.

Ukrainian officials estimate the country faces a $5 billion-a-month fiscal shortfall – or 2.5% of pre-war gross domestic product – due to the cost of the war and declining tax revenues. Economists say that Ukraine’s annual deficit will swell to 25% of GDP, compared with 3.5% before the conflict.

The World Bank estimates that 55% of Ukrainians will be living in poverty by the end of 2023 as a result of the war and the large numbers of displaced persons, compared with 2.5% before the start of the war.

USAID said US budget support has enabled the Ukrainian government to keep gas and electricity flowing to hospitals, schools and other critical infrastructure and deliver urgently needed humanitarian supplies to citizens.

The funds have also paid for healthcare workers, teachers and other civil servants.

USAID said robust safeguards had been put in place by the World Bank, along with USAID-funded, third-party watchdogs embedded within the Ukrainian government to make sure the funds are directed where they are meant to go.

“This economic assistance is critical in supporting the Ukrainian people as they defend their democracy against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression,” US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement provided to Reuters.

The injection of fresh cash for Ukraine comes as the war, which Russia calls “a special military operation,” stretches into a sixth month, with millions of displaced Ukrainians and authorities warning of likely gas shortages in winter.

FOX 11 spoke with one of the victim’s families as they were devastated after hearing about the deadly Windsor Hills crash.

THE ANGELS – As she sat on the sofa, tears flooded down her face as Cotie Davis thought about what happened to her sister Asherey Ryan. She said her friends and family de ella always called her “Rey Rey.”

She would have been 24 years old next month. Davis says that on Thursday her sister de ella was driving to a baby doctor when the driver of a Mercedes was speeding through a red light and hit her car de ella, killing her de ella, her son Alonzo and her unborn child.

“I used to pray all the time to keep my sister safe,” Davis told FOX 11. “My worst fears came true.”

Shaking and inconsolable, 20-year-old Davis couldn’t console herself. She told us, “I’m in shock. I can’t believe I’m walking and talking and I’ll never see her again. She was so supportive.”

“He was almost one. He was going to be one this month on the 11th,” Davis said.

Asherey was also pregnant. She was the oldest of five sisters and worked as a security guard.

Davis says they didn’t know right away what had happened.

“Nobody knew till way later till we started piecing things together,” Davis explained. “Nobody had heard from her.”

Windsor Hills crash victims remembered in makeshift memorial

Loved ones gathered at the intersection where at least six people were killed in a horrific crash in Windsor Hills.

She saw the video of the crash and recognized her sister’s clothes in the footage, “and, then in the car seat, it looked like my nephew,” Davis said.

It all hit Davis like a ton of bricks, especially as she looked at pictures on her phone. Waterfalls of tears. Just a few feet away from the sofa sits Alonzo’s walker. She showed us the video of him using it. On the image are the words, “Until we meet again my babies. God, I’m ready to come home now.”

“There’s always going to be a hole in my heart,” Davis said. “My sister who I grew up with every day. She was like my best friend.”

LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) – Major developed and emerging market central banks around the globe delivered nearly 1,200 basis points in interest rate hikes in July alone, ramping up their fight against multi-decade high inflation with Canada surprising markets with an outsized move.

Central banks overseeing five of the 10 most heavily traded currencies delivered 325 basis points of rate hikes between them last month. This brings the total volume of rate hikes since the start of the year across G10 central banks to 1,100 basis points.

However, July’s tally was less than the 350 basis points seven central banks delivered in June.

“We’ve reached peak hawkishness of the central banks,” Christian Kopf, head of fixed income portfolio management at Union Investment, told Reuters.

“Central banks have made it clear that they will not overdo it with the rate hikes,” Kopf said, adding that it was also the message conveyed by US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell.

July was dotted with some eye catching moves. Canada emerged as the chief hawk, stunning markets by delivering the first 100-basis-point rate increase among the world’s advanced economies in the current cycle, lifting its key policy rate to 1.5%.

New Zealand delivered its sixth straight interest rate rise and signaled it remained comfortable with its planned aggressive tightening path to restrain runaway inflation. read more

And then of course the big one: The Fed delivered its second straight 75-basis-point rate hike, reinforcing its commitment to contain red-hot inflation running at 40-year highs. read more

There was no let up for policymakers in emerging markets, where inflation had been on a tear for much longer than in developed economies.

Nine out of 18 central banks delivered 850 bps of rate hikes in July. In total, emerging market central banks have raised interest rates by 5,265 bps year-to-date – nearly double the 2,745 bps for the whole of 2021, calculations show.

“Emerging market central banks remain more worried about inflation than growth,” BofA’s David Hauner said in a recent note to clients.

Hungary moved twice in July, jacking up its base rate by 300 basis points to 10.75% with borrowing costs into double-digit territory for the first time since late 2008 – and flagging more hikes ahead. read more

Colombia and Chile piled in with a 150 bps and 75 bps hike respectively, though emerging market uber-hawk Brazil, which has lifted rates to 13.25 bps already in June, took a breather.

However, emerging markets have also seen cuts with Russia reducing interest rates ratcheted up to 20% in the wake of its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, which sparked sweeping sanctions. read more

Inflation pressures would remain a headache for policy makers, said Tobias Adrian, director at the Monetary and Capital Markets Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“The magnitude of the inflation has been a surprise to central banks and markets, and there remains substantial uncertainty about the outlook for inflation,” Adrian wrote in a blog on Monday.

“Inflation risks appear strongly tilted to the upside,” Adrian said, adding there was a substantial risk that price pressures were becoming entrenched and expectations unanchored.
