Tokyo heatwave inspires creation of wearable fans to help dogs and cats stay cool

A Tokyo clothing manufacturer has joined forces with veterinarians to create a wearable fan to help pets beat the heat.

Maternity clothing brand Sweet Mommy has created an 85-gram battery-operated fan for dogs and cats to wear.

The fan attaches to a mesh outfit and blows air around their bodies.

Clothing brand president Rei Uzawa said the fans were designed for dogs and cats that could not shed their fur coats in Japan’s blistering summer weather.

Tokyo recorded its longest heatwave on record in June, with temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius for nine days.

Ms Uzawa said seeing her pet Chihuahua exhausted by the summer heat had motivated the invention.

“There was almost no rainy season this year, so the hot days came early, and in that sense, I think we developed a product that is right for the market,” she said.

Ms Uzawa said since the fans were released in July she had received about 100 orders.

She said the fans were available in five different sizes and sold for 9,900 yen ($107).

Mami Kumamoto, who has a miniature poodle named Pudding and a terrier named Maco, said she usually used dry ice packs to keep her dogs cool.

She said she believed the fans would make it easier to walk her dogs in the summer heat.

Bungie disables Destiny 2 text chat due to massive exploit

It appears Destiny 2 players will have limited options as far as comms go for the time being, as developer Bungie has briefly pulled the plug on text chat due to the presence of a game-breaking bug. Player reports indicate that the bug is the result of a specific copypasta (a long string of copied and pasted text) that is being sent through the whisper channel. Players who receive this message are being kicked out of the game, at which point they will receive and error message that reads: “Could not connect to Destiny 2 servers. Check your network configuration and try again.”

This bug appeared as long ago as yesterday, and at the time many players were taking their protection into their own hands. Many players recommended manually shutting off whisper channels and avoiding any areas with local or team chats in order to protect themselves from the malicious messages. Some players were even leaving their clans if they suspected that other clan members might be knowingly using the exploit.

Related: Destiny 2 will get skill-based match making in season 18, new raid launches in August

Shortly after reports began to spread, Bungie made the call to shut down text channels in order to work out a long-term fix, announcing via Twitter that they are taking this action across all platforms in order to investigate further. At this point, it’s unclear how long it will take to get the necessary patch in order, though Bungie is asking players to stay tuned for updates, and is sure to get one out as soon as possible.

This exploit comes on the heels of another problem with Destiny 2’s security, as it was recently discovered that Bungie is suing streamer MiffysWorld after repeated instances of cheating, harassment, and threats caused the streamer to go through at least 13 alternate accounts.

Randle set to revert to Best Supercar chassis for Sandown

Thomas Randle’s Ford Mustang. Picture: Ross Gibb

Thomas Randle is set to revert to Zak Best’s Ford Mustang at this month’s Sandown Supercars event after his big startline shunt at The Bend.

The Tickford Racing driver stalled on the outside of Row 1 at the start of Race 22 at the OTR SuperSprint and was plowed into by Andre Heimgartner, who started five rows behind the #55 Mustang.

Both drivers have been released from hospital after undergoing precautionary checks following what Heimgartner reported was a 38 g impact, although Randle is understood to be in for an MRI scan on his heel today.

As for the Tickford rookie’s chassis, that will be out of action for the time being, although a full prognosis will be known after it is stripped at the squad’s Campbellfield base tomorrow.

“We’ll strip it on Tuesday, we’ll put it back on the jig, do what we always do, just keep cutting metal back until it’s not bent metal and then we’ll just replenish that with new metal,” said team main Tim Edwards, post-Race 23.

“There’s no way he’ll be driving that car at Sandown.

“He’ll jump in the wildcard car, which is actually our spare car, and then at some point later in the year, we’ll make a call whether we put him back into the repaired car or just keep him in that car. ”

The crash led to conjecture about just how well the incar warning system worked, with Shane van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki claiming the stall light came on too late, but Nick Percat, who started a row behind Heimgartner, suggesting that he saw it in time.

As for Best, he contested the Winton and Tailem Bend events as a wildcard, his first starts as a solo driver in the Repco Supercars Championship, which took Tickford to five cars on the grid.

It will once again field five Fords at Sandown, although Best will be back in his usual FGX Falcon ride in the Dunlop Super2 Series rather than in the top tier.

The 20-year-old pulled off a shock pole position ahead of Race 21 of the Supercars Championship season at The Bend.

The performance aroused controversy considering the disparity in tire batches which were issued to the weekend’s two wildcard entries, prompting Supercars to redistribute rubber in order to ensure a level playing field for Sunday’s action.

Then, Best would qualify only 16th for Race 22, but earned seventh in the grid in the session immediately after, putting him third of the Tickford drivers.

His race results for the weekend read fifth, 19th, and DNF, the latter due to a wiper motor failure in a wet conclusion to The Bend event.

According to Edwards, said seventh in qualifying “kind of put all the haters to ease” following the tire controversy.

The Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint takes place on August 19-21, while Randle’s primary chassis will return to competition no earlier than the ITM Auckland SuperSprint on September 9-11.

Indigenous prisoner dies at Casuarina Prison in latest death in custody case

An Indigenous prisoner has taken his own life in his cell at Casuarina Prison.

Prison officers found the 32-year-old man, who is a father of two young children, unconscious in his cell at about 1.30pm on Sunday.

“Officers and prison medical staff provided first aid before paramedics arrived by ambulance,” the Department of Justice said in a statement.

“The prisoner was declared deceased at the prison.

“There were no suspicious circumstances.

“As with all deaths in custody, WA Police will provide a report to the coroner.”

It is understood the man had been in and out of Banksia Hill Detention Center from a young age.

The West Australian has also been told he had been held in the SHU — the special handling unit, which has been described as a “prison within a prison” — in the lead-up to his death.

National Suicide Prevention and Trauma Recovery Project director Megan Krakouer said the McGowan Government “has to ask itself why this State has the nation’s highest prison suicide rate of First Nations people”.

Restorative justice advocate Gerry Georgatos said: “They key message that I always tell everybody – is that if you believe in people long enough they will believe in themselves.”

“That is a major way forward in preventing this from happening,” he said.

“For any person to take their life in a custodial setting, everything must’ve seemed to bleak. And that needs to be avoided, we’ve got to shine a light to hope and avoid the compounding bleakness of their prison setting.”

Just last week, a coronial inquest was held into the death of young Aboriginal man Jomen Blanket, who took his own life inside his cell at Acacia Prison in 2019.

Police are investigating reports of a shooting at the Oakland Technical High School campus Sunday afternoon.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Police are investigating reports of a shooting at the Oakland Technical High School campus Sunday afternoon.

Police have not released any official statement as to what happened, but officers were seen canvassing the neighborhood near the school.

Witnesses say that the 10-year-old Pop Warner Football Team from the Fresno area was playing the Oakland team when gunshots rang out in the stands. Witnesses say an adult male was shot, a 5-year-old girl was shot, and another female was grazed by a bullet.

“It’s just sad that I heard these kids running and screaming, and you know when you see these kids’ faces and how they react to things like that makes it even worse,” said Quintrell Dotson, Oakland Dynamites Pop Warner coach. “Kids don’t deserve to be seeing and witnessing things like this, kids don’t need to be around like this once you come to these events, whatever on the outside nature shouldn’t even be going on here so it just hurts that this happened today.”

Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Police have also not said who they are looking for.

Elon Musk’s dad says he isn’t proud of Tesla founder and explains kids with stepdaughter

Elon Musk’s father has admitted he isn’t proud of his billionaire son and explained why he married and had a baby with his stepdaughter in a candid radio interview.

Errol Musk, 76, called in to the Kyle and Jackie O show on Monday morning for a bizarre 20-minute interview in which he joked he could be Kyle’s biological father.

The father of the Tesla CEO said Elon had ‘surpassed the mark’ of what he deemed success but said the Musk family had ‘been doing a lot of things for a long time’.

‘Your offspring is a genius. He’s worth so much money and has created so many things, you can’t take that away from him. Are you proud?’ Jackie O asked.

‘Nope. You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something,’ Errol replied.

Errol said his billionaire son isn’t as happy as he could be when it came to his success and said he feels as if he is running five years behind schedule.

‘He is frustrated with progress and it’s understandable,’ the 76-year-old said.

‘I know it sounds crazy, but we tend to think like that as a family. He’s 50 now and I still think of him as a little boy. But he’s 50, I mean he’s an old man.’

In reference to recent shirtless photos of his son on a boat in Greece, he said he had been encouraging his son to eat better and take a supplement.

‘Elon is very strongly built but he’s been eating badly,’ he told the hosts.

In a ruthless aside, Errol said he had recommended garcinia cambogia – a supplement that can supposedly aid weight loss without additional exercise or dieting – to his son.

Errol then revealed he never once received a handout from his billionaire son (pictured in May) and that it was his younger brother Kimbal who was his 'pride and joy'

Jackie O asked the South African engineer if he drove a Tesla to which he replied he instead drove a Bentley, Rolls Royce and Mercedes – similar to Kyle’s car collection.

Errol said he had not once received a handout from his billionaire son and that it was Elon’s younger brother Kimbal who was his ‘pride and joy’.

‘We are a very frugal, stingy family. If I want to spend anything I have to answer 100 questions of why,’ he explained.

‘Elon lives a very frugal life. He’s up at work at six o’clock.’

Errol said he worried Elon, who is currently single, will never find a woman who will give up her career to be part of his life, like Kimbal’s wife had done.

Errol was then asked about the relationship he shares with his 34-year-old stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout – who he is married to and shares two young children with.

He said he was married to the 34-year-old’s mother for two years in the 1990s and that he hadn’t seen or spoken to Ms Bezuidenhout after the divorce until 2014.

He said it was when she reached out to him during a difficult time that their friendship turned into a romance.

When Kyle said he thought Jana was his biological daughter, Errol interjected.

‘No, it’s not completely normal,’ he said, to which Kyle agreed, despite the 42-year age gap.

Kyle then bizarrely asked what Elon’s penis looked like and if it was circumcised, blaming the personal question on the ‘promiscuous’ Australian women who wanted to know.

‘I’ll get him to send a photo,’ Errol joked.

Kyle concluded the interview by asking the father-of-seven if he could be his father.

‘Maybe I am. Has your mother ever been to South Africa?’ Errol replied with Kyle screaming ‘daddy’ to the Musk patriarch.

Last month, the 76-year-old revealed he had had a daughter with Ms Bezuidenhout in 2019, a year after they had their first child, Elliot Rush, now aged five.

He told The Sun he would like to have the children living with him but the last time they visited ‘the kids were starting to get on my nerves.’

He refused to rule out having even more children, however, saying: ‘The only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce.’

Errol told the publication that his CEO shared the opinions of his three sisters, who were creeped out by the relationship he had with their half-sister.

‘They still don’t like it. They still feel a bit creepy about it, because she’s their sister. Their half-sister,’ Errol said.

Meanwhile, it also emerged Elon had welcomed twins last November with a senior executive at one of his companies, 36-year-old Shivon Zilis.

The twins arrived just a few weeks before Musk had a second child via surrogate with his on-off girlfriend Canadian pop star Claire Boucher, who goes by the alias Grimes.

The father-of-ten also has five children with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Musk.

A sixth child, their first, died of sudden infant death syndrome when they were just ten weeks old in 2002, prompting them to use invitro fertilization.

Then Justine gave birth to twins — Vivian and Griffin — in 2004, followed by triplets — Kai, Saxon and Damian — in 2006.

Their eldest child, Vivian, 18, recently filed a legal request to change her first name to reflect that she is transgender and her last name to signal she doesn’t want ‘to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form ‘.

Explorations in UI/UX design: The link between technology & art | The Advertiser – Cessnock

Explorations in UI/UX design: The link between technology & art

As humankind continues to shape digital technologies to behave as an extension of their own almost instinctual thought processes, designing user interfaces has morphed from being perceived as a scientific process filled with linear pathways, to a more creative and perhaps even intuitive, multi-dimensional art form in its own right.

Admittedly, not all UX designers will readily refer to UI or UX design as an ‘art form’, particularly because there is a fair amount of behavioral psychology that goes into producing intuitive user interfaces.

Even so, there’s no denying that this branch of technological design requires just as much imagination and ‘outside-the-box’ thinking as it does require critical thought.

But how does UX differ from UI, and is it right to label either avenue as more technical or artistic as the other? We’ll be taking a closer look at these two interlinking disciplines in order to help Aussie students learn how best to hit the ground running when starting a career in either UX or UI design.

The role of the UX designer

While user interface design is isolated to creating two-dimensional or purely digital products, UX (or ‘user experience’) can involve developing both physical and digital creations.

Regardless of whether you’re building a physical product or digital interface, UX design projects are naturally concerned with maintaining a user-centric or ‘human-first approach’ to the design process.

This user-oriented process is what enables UX designers to produce structural design solutions that actively cater to user needs and address common user pain points that were observed in past implementations.

Simply put, it is the responsibility of the UX designer to use design theories in accordance with historical data and findings from user testing and prototyping to create the best possible technological solution to fulfill a set of defined user needs.

The preliminary stages of any UX design project will always involve the process of UX mapping. The nature of UX mapping generally requires user experience designers to also be good spatial thinkers, with an ability to map out and follow a wide selection of ‘pathways’.

As UX design also often involves connecting pre-existing pathways up to sections of an interface that’s still being developed, UX designers are also expected to think in the abstract on a regular basis.

If you possess the skills we’ve outlined above and hold a passion for the technical side of the design process, chances are you may just have what it takes to be a talented UX designer.

Dabbling in UI design & development

But what if you’re more passionate about the aesthetics of interactive elements over the formatting and functionality of those elements? Well then you’re likely to be more aligned with UI design over the highly technical process of UX design.

UI (or ‘user interface’) design is the yin to UX’s yang. The two processes work together in order for user interfaces to be highly user-friendly, both with regards to their structure and their presentation.

That being said, UI design does entail so much more than just fine-tuning color palettes. There are also elements of strategy behind good user interface design, with UI designers also tasked with pinpointing where best to include visual elements to enhance or draw user attention to specific functions.

For instance, mobile apps with swiping mechanics are likely to include a small animation to denote to users that they can swipe between pages. But what happens when a user swipes to the ‘end’ of a swipe side menu?

And what about what happens when users interact incorrectly with other navigational styles? UI designers are actually the ones who decide here. All the animations or small responsive actions created by your interactions with an app are likely to have been created by UI designers.

As UI designers are concerned with designing a user interface’s intuitive responses, typography, button design, imagery, and all other visual elements, UI design is generally considered to be a more ‘right-brained’ approach to digital design.

And whilst UI design is arguably less technical than UX, this design discipline still possesses its fair share of theory, including explorations within the realm of behavioral psychology.

The art of problem solving in UX/UI design

Believe it or not, but the way we interact with our digital interfaces says more about the human brain than it does our collective design thinking capabilities.

UX and UI design principles were actually developed to revolve around user behavior over user expectations, which is precisely why some user interfaces can feel like an extension of your mind and thought processes.

The whole mechanism of swiping down to move down a screen and vice versa is in itself, a natural response that the majority of human brains are likely to have.

Alongside this, designing in accordance with behavioral theories can also inspire users to perform certain actions both within and surrounding a user interface. A great example here is an app using emotive language or imagery to elicit a sympathetic response from users, or sending notifications with rhetorical questions or calls to action to inspire user engagement.

This is precisely the reason why many UX and UI designers believe that the process of interface design is far more scientific than it is artistic. And to be fair, they aren’t wrong here either.

Even so, there is a level of undeniable artistry in the way that both UX and UI designers go about solving user problems. Finding the most novel and still intuitive pathways in order to fulfill a user need or inspire a desired user interaction requires creative thinking just as much as it does critical thinking, which is why UX and UI design still fall under the umbrella of digital design rather than ‘development’.

How to get started in UX & UI

If human-first approaches to design sounds like a fascinating area of study for you, then we highly encourage you to enroll in a UX or UI design course. There are an abundance of UI/UX courses available to students who are eager to learn, including both on-campus and online programs.

Alongside enrolling in tertiary courses, students can also take full advantage of all the physical and digital learning resources available to them.

There are a growing number of UX design blogs, digital magazines, and online forums that can be accessed anywhere in the world so that students can engage in self-study alongside seeking academic and professional opportunities.

As user interface and experience design are both fairly young disciplines that are growing rapidly alongside the digital transformation of global industries, there truly has never been a better time than now to start picking up these highly employable and highly ‘future-proof multidisciplinary skills.

AFL: Melbourne captain Max Gawn doesn’t think Luke Jackson will leave the Demons for Fremantle

Melbourne captain Max Gawn is confident his premiership teammate Luke Jackson will knock back a huge offer to join Fremantle, declaring the young ruckman was the “happiest person out there” after the Demons took down the Dockers last Friday night.

Jackson, who is from Perth, has put off contract talks until the end of the season amid rampant speculation he’s headed back to Western Australia, and the Dockers, on a monster deal.

Local fans taunted the Melbourne players last Friday night by hanging a Fremantle jersey with “Jackson” written on it over the race. The jersey was snatched and then thrown away by Jackson’s teammate Jake Melksham.

On Monday, Gawn conceded his opinion was going against the grain of what most were saying about Jackson, but he thought the 20-year-old would remain at the Demons.

“Luke’s a talent and he’s got every right, as every player does, to look at any offer that’s coming his way,” Gawn told reporters on Monday.

“I’m pretty confident he’s going to be a Melbourne player still and I know that’s very far from what the consensus is out in the media.

“He was the happiest person I’ve ever seen (last Friday night) beating Fremantle, who is the team that he’s supposed to be going to.

“He seemed the happiest person out there.”

Jackson was the center of attention from the moment he touched down in Perth last week, but Gawn joked the youngster was the “best character” to handle it.

“I actually think he doesn’t know he’s out of contract,” Gawn said.

“That little bit helps him. He does n’t read anything, he does n’t look at anything, he just continues on his merry way and I think his performances by him are showing that.

“If you go out there and watch him, he doesn’t look like he’s over-thinking. He’s just out there playing football.”

Last week, Melbourne re-signed midfield star Angus Brayshaw to a six-year deal having also secured best and fairest Clayton Oliver on an on long-term contract.

Jackson, however, remains the No.1 priority and Gawn said he was hopeful of continuing to build on the partnership they had formed, on and off the field, since the youngster arrived at the Demons in the 2019 draft.

“I love playing with him, I love being his leader, I love being his friend, I love coaching him and I love seeing little bits that I’ve told him during the week come out on game day,” Gawn said.

“I’m really excited, especially for the next seven weeks, to play with Luke and then hopefully for the next few years.”

Man freed after killing teenage girl while she walked home from school

A man who was a teenager when he murdered a 15-year-old girl as she was walking home from school almost two decades ago has been released from jail.

The killer was only 16 when he stabbed Tania Burgess 48 times in a frenzied attack on the New South Wales Central Coast in 2005.

He served 17 years at Cessnock jail after the sentence was reduced on appeal.

The law protects the identity of youth offenders even after they turn 18, which means Burgess’ killer can only be referred to as DL and any images of him must be blurred.

The now 32-year-old man will face intensive supervision under 15 bail conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet.

“He gets to take no responsibility for anything that he’s done,” father Chris Burgess said.

Tania’s mother, Mandy Burgess, said she would never forget the face of her daughter’s killer, and says she has not had justice.

A teenage boy who murdered a 15-year-old girl as she was walking home from school almost two decades ago will be released from Cessnock Jail in Sydney tomorrow. Former Putin advisor Anatoly Chubais suddenly sick from rare neurological disorder

A former high-ranking advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin — who fled the country after the invasion of Ukraine — has fallen seriously ill and was in intensive care Sunday, a report said.

Anatoly Chubais was suffering from a neurological disorder at a European hospital, according to Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian television personality and friend of Chubais.

Sobchak, on Telegram, spoke with Chubais’ wife and was told he was suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Guillain-Barre occurs when a person’s immune system harms the body’s nerves, which can lead to muscle weakness and even paralysis.

Chubais, 67, had grown numb in his hands and legs. Specialists in “chemical protection suits” probed the room where he suddenly got sick, according to the New York Times.

Chubais did not explain why he stepped down from his post in March, though the assumption is it was due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. His high-profile resignation was one of many following the start of the war.

He most recently was part of Putin’s envoy to international organizations on sustainable development and is well-known in the country after holding many top-level posts since the early 1990s.

His illness raises suspicion considering other Kremlin opponents have mysteriously and suddenly gotten sick in the past, most famously Alexei Navalny, who was apparently poisoned in 2020.
